Re: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up

2012-12-15 Thread Mike(W5UC) Kathy (K5MWH)

All of us on this reflector are painfully aware that LoTW has a
problem, Additionally we all have seen this discussion go on ad
nausium. All of us are concerned about the problem. None of this is new
NEWS. So far I have told you nothing new. The complaining goes on
on, and accomplishes nothing.

SO, please let me ask; what do the complainers expect to accomplish by
continuing to kick this horse? If you just like to hear yourself
complain, please, just send the e-mails to yourself, and spare the rest
of us from having to deal with all of the superfluous BS.

Go to the LOTW site and read carefully. There is a discussion that

in 6-8 weeks. THEY ARE WORKING ON IT!!! RELAX!!! Constantly getting

With a very large database, decreases in throughput can just as
easily be due to reaching a tipping point in the database structure
(the point at which the indexing fails). Since there has been no

Like you... I am #1 honor roll and have to work the new ones... but more
important...

It was the journey... and I must be honest... it was meeting people like
yourself... classy... dedicated... willing to help others get to the top...
that made the journey worth while...

It took me 45 years to work them all... and a lot of anxious moments when
the signals were fading... and when the DX was 599 to other parts of the
country and when it was my turn (while the DX was working by the numbers)...
the propagation was down to just above the noise level..

But... it was worth it...

DXing has become a point and shoot activity, and has become more
drudgery than anything else. The Cluster and RBN have taken the fun out
of it, which for me was the hunt. Nowadays the QSO is pretty much a
given, if you just spend the time fighting it out in the pileups. If I
didn't care about losing my spot at the TOTHR, I wouldn't bother working
the new ones any more, as they are created and put on the air.

[DX-CHAT] Availabity of 7O1YGF QSL cards?

2009-08-13 Thread Mike D'Alto

OK, so I had 5 QSOs with 7O1YGF which I never requested confirmation
for. After the 7O1A debacle and my cards being rejected by the DXCC
Desk, I decided to take a lets see what happens attitude. I pretty
much had given up hope that the 7O1YGF operation would ever be approved
after a year or two of not hearing anything, and subsequently put it out
of my mind. Naturally, I am now very eager to get these contacts
confirmed. This would put me within one click of having worked and
confirmed them all. So does anyone know if the original ops have the
logs and will answer direct QSL requests? The sources I checked
indicate DJ3XD as the route for CW contacts, and DK9KX for SSB RTTY.
I've never used LOTW, from what I have read elsewhere, that may become a
viable way to receive a confirmation. I'd rather have the actual card.
Kicking myself for not having acted when the operation was still
recent. What would you do if you were me?

IMHO, the DX-Pedition operators will ultimately be the ones who must
solve the problem. They will have to get tired enough to start
imposing sanctions on unruly stations. Calling these Bozos out by
callsign publicly isn't a viable solution, but privately taking note
of who they are, and never answering their calls may get their attention.

While I don't like the fact that there are General class ops
operating out of their assigned frequency range, I am forced accept
the fact that the whole licensing structure has gone to hxxx in a
hand-basket, and for all practical purposes is meaningless.

Ron, unfortunately, out thought pattern is near the same. If I were

meters, 160 is my other favorite, and that apparently isn't an
option. CW would definitely be a favorite option for me. I'm
somewhere up around 190 confirmed on CW. I should be higher, but I
continue to wait on LOTW confirmations. I guess I will have to get
busy on CW that are not LOTW. SSB would be my last choice if I ever
submitted it; not likely as my contact rate for SSB is somewhere in
the 1 or 2 per year rate(sometimes not that high).

Go for CW.

2007-12-17 Thread mike giddings
A paragraph in the January issue of Radio Communication mentions that the
RSGB have recently received an email from the Director,Bhutan Infocomm and
Media Authority, to the effect that the callsign A52AM was cancelled on the 27
September 2007 and any subsequent operation under that callsign is illegal. The
stated reason is that the station was operating with 1kW despite the 100 watt
power limit in force in Bhutan.

Anyone know if the ARRL will still honour QSO's with A52AM for DXCC purposes
prior to 27 September 2007?

Barry, I'll vote with you. Creating entities for the sake of

Unfortunately, however, we must consider that the legal status of
some of these islands is changing, and that complicates the matter
with the DXCC rules. IMHO, a more reasonable solution would be to
change the DXCC rules to allow these entities to remain as they are

--
John - W2AGN

John, that is exactly correct, and that is the reason I phrased my
question as I did. If ARRL is not a friend of Amateur Radio, then:

1) Why do they provide a Volunteer Counsel program? I can tell you
from personal experience that this program saved my fanny back around
1990 or 1991, and it didn't cost me one red cent. I had access to
Chris Emlay, the League attorney any time I needed it, as well as a
competent local attorney. We won the case.

2) Why does ARRL pay an attorney to represent us ar FCC, and to
fight such issues as BPL? If they were simply a publishing company
as you suggest, I doubt that they would waste time, money, and effort
to work the BPL issue as intently as they do.

3) Why does ARRL work as diligently as they do to represent us at
World Radio Conferences? They could just chug along with no effort
in that direction, allowing those expenditures to go to the bottom
line, and we would likely retain the frequency assignments that we
currently have, and they could go on forever as a publishing company.

This list could go on on, but I think you SHOULD get the
picture. If you don't, then there is no hope for you. May I please
suggest that you just sit back, relax, and appreciate the positive
things that the League does for us, and cease wasting your time
emotion trying to tear them(us) down. I'm not always happy with how
they do things, but all in all, they do a great job compared to the
organization that you support.

AMEN John:

Last year when I complained that the annual DXCC listings were
missing, a part of the explanation I got verbally from a particular
League official, was that the DX Challenge is now the premier DX
Award in the league DX program. Pardon my French, but BS. That's a
matter of opinion. Challenge may possibly be attracting more
attention, but Challenge is the newest big thing. I would expect
that there would naturally be a flurry of new activity there. DXCC,
however, is still the original, and IMHO, the most prestigious of the
DX awards. (don't challenge me with the merits of all of your
favorite awards; I don't want to hear it)

I also, don't know who, when, decided that the Yearbook needed to look
like Parade Magazine in my Sunday paper, with a lengthy review of all
of the news I saw on Fox News this past week. Please, just take it
back to it's original form and leave it alone.

It really would be nice if people would quit trying to discover a way
to destroy the few remaining traditions we have left. I'm so sick I
want to puke from operators ending correspondence on air
communications with 73's. The term is 73; please learn what it
means, and use it correctly, and please leave the Yearbook tradition alone

RE: [DX-CHAT] BS7H thoughts

2007-05-10 Thread Mike(W5UC) Kathy(K5MWH)

Good Morning Bernie All:

After seeing the video from 1997 I too questioned whether BS7 should
be on the list. My conclusion is that it should never have been a new
entity(don't ask me why, I don't have a good answer). However, now
that it is on the list I do not believe it should be removed. In
retrospect, a land mass clause probably should have been an original
part of the rules, but it wasn't/isn't. You can't un-ring the bell.

Move on.

Mike, W5UC

HS0ZCW, who sometimes operates as K4VUD said Maybe it is time to re-think

This would set a terrible precedence! We must follow the DXCC rules
otherwise we will destroy the very fabric of the integrity of the DXCC
program. If we do as Charles suggests for BS7H what will be next? This is
a slippery slope. Anyone could then make the same case for many other
counters on the DXCC list. I won't give examples but one could easily list
many more countries for their own personal reasons. We have gone down
this road many times over the years. So there is no need to repeat this
thread. There is one and only one way for a DXCC Entity (country) to be
removed from the DXCC list.

Notice I said removed! I don't think many people realize the next country
that does not meet the DXCC criteria will be removed, not deleted, as there
will be no more deletes because of the results of DXCC 2000. That's right a
removal, which will be as if you never worked it! More on that discussion
later.

Back to the one and only way to remove a current counter from the DXCC list.
The only way is if the said entity no longer meets the criteria in which put
it on the list to begin with. Rules that are made up afterwards do not
affect its status. Remember BS7H was added to the list back in the mid 90s.
Then afterwards in an effort to not have any others added to the list like
Scarborough Reef the 100 meter high tide rule was added. Believe me you
don't want to remove anything off the DXCC list, unless it does not meet the
criteria.

I wonder how many have actually read the DXCC rules?
http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/rules.html
Notice I said read them, not understood them all! Some are hard to
understand, but then again so are some of the counters on the list!

See you in the next pileup?

Fellow DXers Prior to the latest BS7H op, I had not given the Rocks any
attention and had only a vague notion of what is there. But today I read
the web sites, saw the photos, and listened to James' super interview while

on site. I come away of two minds... one with great appreciation and awe at

the accomplishment and second with a deeper understanding of how truly
dangerous this op was.

Of course, I congratulate all who make this happen and especially to men who

were willing genuinely to risk their lives to do the op. Let nothing take
away from that.

However, I have to ask if this set of rocks is worth the risks? I know
mountain climbers die in their efforts and there are many other very
dangerous sport activities, but should we as a hobby sanction placing our
fellow hams into a place where the slightest bad weather, lightning strike,
or just a nasty fall would have been an easy-to-happen disaster. How would
we feel as hams if the worst had happened there? How much should we depend
on LUCK? I think anyone can go where ever they please, but not with the
sanction and official stamp of our great avocation.

Maybe it is time to re-think the DXCC status of this place?

[DX-CHAT] Another Example

2007-05-10 Thread Mike(W5UC) Kathy(K5MWH)
Here is another example of an entity that could reasonably be
questioned. Because the environmental extremist zealots have the
attention of the government of New Zealand, chances of working ZL9
are slim none.(before you get your shorts all in a wad, there is a
difference between environmentalists,and environmental extremist
zealots) Below is a note that I got from a fellow who, at least for
now, is the only likely person to operate from ZL9:

Hello Mike,

I don't go to ZL9 for work, but I occasionally end up there as an unintended
side-effect of our fish surveys in the area. Next Campbell Platform survey:
Sept. 2008.

More info at:

http://homepages.woosh.co.nz/wk/zl9/zl9bsj.html

Wilbert, ZL2BSJ ZL9BSJ/P

This fellow goes there rarely, and for only very short (hours)
periods. Since ZL9 stands between me and DXCC#1(I need ZL9 E3), I
could possibly argue for it's removal from the list. At age 68, I
have almost no chance at it since it usually takes years for the
wheels of change to turn in a federal government. BUT, that's the
way life is. I missed my chance in 2000; So be it. Please stop
trying to intercourse with the list!

Absolutely not. I have just been in enough pile-ups(and so have a
lot of you) to know how to read the operators, and the pile-up. My
favorite response when someone asks what you have to do to be on the
Honor Roll is; Get Old. IMHO what is between the ears counts at
least as much as that 1.5 KW amp and a giant antenna at 100 feet, and
when the chips are down, that big killer signal isn't worth much if
you don't know what to do with it.

are pissed. They have a point. At the same time, i realize that the

I'll echo that! John, K5MO(and all you other league haters), please
take a reasonable amount of time to sit and think of anything you can
that is positive about ARRL. If you can't find anything you are
likely among those who just like to bitch about ARRL, and don't know why.

I can tell you for sure that back around 1991, they literally saved
my butt through the volunteer counsel program. I had an excellent
attorney, Jim Hayne himself attended the legal proceedings, and the
folks who sued me over my antenna walked away with their tail between
their legs. It didn't cost me one red cent.

BRAVO !!

73 Rag LA5HE , ARRL life member

My point is that ARRL CHANGED, because the consensus of its members
changed. The ARRL is not them, it's us! If you don't like the
positions taken by your board member, tell him or her, and be
prepared to stand for election next time to see if your views get
accepted.

But despite its imperfections, ARRL represents amateur
radio worldwide (not just in the USA) better than any other
organization, including IARU.

I disagree here !

A particular point of criticism seems to be the DXCC branch, and the
way it deals with DXpeditions and potential new DXCC Entities. As a
member of the DX Advisory Committee, I'd agree that some of the
executive decisions appear on occasion to be arbitrary (7O1YGF, BS7H,
etc).

Remember, this is only a game !!!

But for better or worse there are some key threads which
explain most of them: Take the long-term view; Support governments
and national amateur radio organizations; And above all try not to
risk the integrity of the #1 award in ham radio (memories of Romeo
still hurt!).

So, when you bash ARRL and especially DXCC, expect me to tune out folks.

73, John, NT5C.

[DX-CHAT] Exams

2006-12-25 Thread Mike(W5UC) Kathy(K5MWH)
You all have brought back some fond memories. The examiner in Houston
was Lyle Bebee. Actually a pretty nice fellow unless you got a pink
slip from him. I never shook so hard in my life as when I went for my
Extra exam (Jan 3, 1963). In those days the FCC issued a special blue
certificate for Extra Class Licensees. Fortunately from where I
lived it was only about an hour drive. Also, the exam wasn't a wussy
exam like it is today.

ie: Draw a schematic diagram of a push-pull power amplifier using
triode tubes. Show the
neutralization and biasing networks and the plate modulation
system. (These were the days of

   AM and before SSB)

Draw a schematic of a full wave power supply using a center
tapped power transformer and
mercury vapor tubes. Include the appropriate bleeder
resistor and pi filtering network.

Yeah, they really have it tough these days.

Pete, you are speaking in terms of a true democracy. That may be practical
for small organizations, but as in the case of the US Government that is
impractical. That's why we have a Republic(a representative form of

also not renew their membership for 1 year they would maybe finally
realize

that the membership is the ARRL and they need the MEMBERSHIP for them to
function as a whole. ALL the members should have say in a vote to make
rules
after they are proposed.. not just a select few to make rules they feel
they

need, rules should be made by votes from the membership...I do not like a
lot of things they do. ALL you ARRL members its your program and Newington
is there to work for its members not for themselves. Seems ARRL is run
more

like a dictatorship than a democratic one.

Re: [DX-CHAT] KH6ND/KH5 Palmyra Atol

2005-12-12 Thread mike giddings
Hi Guys,Did anyone hear or have a QSO with Mike KH6ND/5 on 19 November 2005 at or around 1233z on 1425863 MHz there was quite a sizeable pile up of European stations? The reason I ask is that I had a QSO with Mike (or at least I thought it was Mike!) at this time. I have just had my QSL returned from his manager saying that he wasn't on 20M at that time. I can only assume it was a pirate but am intrigued because his signals were definately coming over the pole, arctic flutter and sounded very genuine. Also many other stations were working him around this time so there is going to be some feedback I'm sure. Is there any way of getting the DX sumit print out for 19 November 14 MHZ for 1200z.I would be interested in hearing any feedback on this matter. Thanks and Best 73Mike Giddings G3XLB

[DX-CHAT] Inverted L

2005-11-20 Thread Mike(W5UC) Kathy(K5MWH)
Who is using, or has used an inverted L on 160 meters? For sometime I have
been using a shunt fed tower with a significant top hat(a full size 2
element 30 mtr yagi). However, it is still a vertical, and at this
location ground conductivity is average, and there is little room for an
effective radial system. EZ-Nec indicates that I can get a fair amount of
ground gain at a reasonable radiation angle. It does appear that the
radiation resistance is down around 5 ohms, but I can probably overcome
that with a matching network at the feed. I would appreciate your inputs on
the inverted L.

[DX-CHAT] Hi Can anyone help

2005-09-12 Thread mike giddings
Would like to write to any Hams who have owned and used the Yaesu FL2000 B Linear amplifier. I recently purchased one of these secondhand and despite the age is in good working order. My only problem is that when the amplifier is switched on, but in standbymode (not transmitting) I get bad picture wobble (side to side)on my PC monitor (CRT type not LCD). Am not sure if this is caused by the high electomagnetic fieldfrom the big power transformer or interference from the two blower motors. Has anyone experienced this and any ideas on effective suppression.

Thanks and 73 from G'Land

[DX-CHAT] QSL Costs

2005-07-18 Thread Mike Mattes
One of the most irritating things in QSLing is the DX op who complains about
theft in his country's postal system yet never gets a manager in another
country with a more secure postal system. One has to wonder if such stations
aren't DXing for dollars. If they're not, then they should either tell
stations to 1)not send cards or 2)get a manager as mentioned above.

Good Morning Ron all:

Please let me raise an issue that I haven't seen addressed here. Very
simply, are Dayton HamCom too close together on the calendar? This
year, it will be two weeks between. Yeah, Yeah, I know, HamCom doesn't
draw the crowd that Dayton does, but if they were farther apart, would
both benefit. In my simple life, it's a no-brainer. HamCom is a 4 hour
drive, and the costs are much lower. Thoughts?

This appears to be 'dead on. There are those rare items that I look for
at a Hamfest, But like many I am sure, when a need comes to mind, it's off
to e-bay. I will go to Hamcom in Dallas because it is only a 4 hour drive.
I hope to sell a couple of items that were taken to Dayton by a good friend
but did not sell, and I will be looking for a killer bargain on a
FT-920(yes, I have already been watching e-bay), BUT the thing I am
primarily looking for is the opportunity to visit with old as well as new
friends. I believe the small, close Hamfests will survive, but the large
ones may be doomed for the reasons Charles has outlined. Too much cost
(gasoline)for too little benefit.

Has anyone else had this problem for qsos around Dec 23?

I received quite a few responses to my inquiry about successful QSL routes
to Hiroo, XW0X. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to respond. I hope
I answered all of you individually.
The general consensus is that Hiroo is reachable via his QRZ.com email
address and that by following his instructions explicitly (plain envelope,
security SASE, IRCs only) people have gotten his QSL. One respondent
reported receipt of a QSL as recently as this past April.
