??? about a negative kitty
Okay, I have a Siamese ever since he was a baby (6 weeks old rescue) he has a fetish for plastic. Especially the plastic bags from the grocery stores it doesn't matter which store it's from. He will lick it or love it. He has been tested and there is nothing medically wrong with him. He is almost 5 years old. Anyone have a kitty that does this? Yep, I have another Siamese that does that too! Well it's a never ending saga in my house when it comes to the Siamese. In a message dated 5/12/2007 11:01:39 A.M. Re: Plastic bags
Wow didn't think this subject would last this long. Anyway, I recycle my plastic bags. I dump dirty cat litter in them then put that into the bags that the clean litter comes in. So there isn't a smell. I remember years ago one of my Mom's cats got hung up in the handle parts and scared him so bad that I thought he was going to have a heart attack. He went flying through the house with it stuck on his body. To top it off he was a high strung Siamese. I felt so bad for him. In general the only time there is any plastic out is when I'm changing the litter boxes or garbage cans. Tazzy just sits there and licks it. Of course it's before it has the dirty litter in it. In a message dated 5/26/2007 8:22:40 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: At 08:13 PM 5/26/2007, you wrote: Why can we lobby to have them made of a thin cardboard so they will biodegrade..I hate them!! While on this subject, don't forget to cut through the handles of all plastic actually ANY bags before trashing them. Stray cats can get their heads caught in the handles strangle. So please please cut those loops! For the same reason, cut through the loops of the plastic things holding 6 paks together. Those things have been found around the necks of seals, cutting off their ability to swallow, thus starving them. Closer to inland home, small aniimals can get their heads caught in those too, or stray kittens which as they grow these things will tighten around their necks. I suspect that MeMe was at one time in her young life on her own because she can climb trees better than squirrels and seems to know her way around the terrain. Re: Charity (Crossed The Bridge)
Patti, I'm so sorry to hear about Charity. Just remember you did what you could do for her with what you had. This was more than anyone else did for her. She knew that...as cats know more than us humans give them credit for. When the time comes there is a sacred and blessed place for you as well. For all that you do and what you've had to overcome in the past few years. Then you will be joined by your fur-angels. You are truly angel yourself. I too know what it's like to have one cry of pain. I was limited because my location and funds at the time. Of course this happened years ago when I was much younger but still remembered as if it happened recently. So I think some of us at point in our life had this happen. So be good to yourself and take care of those around you that need you now. Charity will visit you and she will always be in your heart. OT: Regarding a freak accident to my hubby..it is long...sorry!
(I want apologized if you have already seen this from other groups I'm on) Hello all, I wanted to make everyone aware or least be alert of what can happen when you get behind brush mowers whether it's up close or at a distance. It is very dangerous. Yesterday, my husband was about 20 feet behind a tractor that had a brush mower on it which was operated by his friend. My husband was looking for items that may have been sticking out of the ground that the mower didn't get. Anyway, a huge rock flew out from the mower and my husband said he seen it at the corner of his eye. By then it was too late. The rock hit him on his right arm below the elbow and broke his arm in two places. I had to call 911 for help he was bleeding and going into shock. He was taken to the hospital and had x-rays done on him. The time was around noontime that this happened. My Dr. was on call who is a orthopedic surgeon had to do emergency surgery on him. I have a lot of faith in him as he done my knee replacements and other bone surgeries. One of the bones is shattered in my husband's arm and he said it look like a gunshot wound. He was taken into surgery about 5 pm was returned back to his room about 9:15 pm last night. The Dr. told me he was bad that he could lose his arm especially below the elbow. He has muscle and tissue damage. Many fragments of the bone was floating in his arm. Did what he could do for him at this point. Only time will tell. Since, my husband is a Diabetic and has HEP C from tainted blood in the 60's from a blood transfusion he is considered high risk. He has a tube in him that they call a Vacu this is to suck all the infection and excess blood from the area. He is also on two different IV lines for the loss of blood and for antibiotics. He is being monitored closely. I did noticed his blood pressure was high. So he will be in the hospital for at least some time. He will be taken back into surgery tomorrow to check out more of the damage and try to repair more of his arm. By the way my husband is right handed this is the arm that got injured. Some of you already know he just had two recent right shoulder surgeries on the same arm. He was supposed to return back to work for light duty on the 19th of this month. Believe it or not he was looking forward going back to work after being off for almost a year. Now that this has happened I don't know what we are going to do. Please pray and hope he doesn't lose part of his arm. That he makes full recovery. Update:Re: OT: Regarding a freak accident to my hubby..it is long...sorry!
Hi all, I wanted to update you all of what's been going on with my husband. My husband is on a lot of pain meds and is cantankerous. He isn't a happy camper. I have been at the hospital a lot and it is showing. I'm so tired when I do get home I'm only sleeping a few hours. I keep waking up then decide to get up and go back to the hospital. Of course feed the animals and such before leaving. On Friday the Drs. did the second surgery to look at the area and decide on what they are going to do. They cleanse the area and to check for new tissue growth. There is a lot of muscle and skin tissue damage plus the one bone is not connected due to it being shattered. They put a fresh VAC tube in him and closed him up. Came out to talk to me and said he needs to have a bone and skin grafts done. ASAP The Dr. said they would use a bone donor or take bone from his hip and take skin from his thigh area. This would the next surgery. The third surgery is today. My husband is still not out of danger yet. The Drs. are working hard to help and save his arm. So please keep your prayers coming...thanks! God bless you all. Another Update:Re: OT: Regarding a freak accident
Hi all, Wanted to update let you know my husband is home now. He has already went to the Dr. had his dressing change. He is wearing a temporary cast until Thursday the 28th then the Dr will put on the regular cast. He has been cantankerous ole fart but is getting better. The Dr. is proud of how the surgeries have went. As long as my husband listens he should recover but he won't be 100% considering the damage the arm has suffered. I can tell you from experience when I was in nursing years ago his arm is doing well. The swelling has gone down quite a bit. Coloring of the arm is good even though it is bruised. The pain he has is from the surgery sight which is normal. It is also telling me he is starting to heal. He is using his fingers some which is the most important thing. His appetite is back and eating junk foods again...guess there are some things I can't change...lmao! I want to thank you all for your good thoughts and prayers! As we need them! I was recently told that I have lost some weight and aging somegeez can't imagine why...lmao That isn't too encouraging on the aging part! My luck has been horrible in the last year or so. It has just got to get better! This hasn't been easy. I always thought when you start growing older that things get better and easier...lmao! My daughter's kitty Big Red went to the bridge on Thursday/Cassandra
Cassandra, My heart feels for you Sweetie! I wish I could say something to help you ease the pain some. As we all know on this list it isn't easy when one passes to the bridge. Remember we are here for you whether you want to vent or just chat. On Thursday the 21st of June I had to tell my daughter to take her kitty (Big Red) to the Vet. He had been staying with us since she moved. Since he was the last of her animals and was comfortable living here told her he can live here of whatever time he may have left. He was one of those cats that had the million mile marks on him since he flew all over the world with her since he was a stray kitten. He has been vomiting and had diarrhea something fierce. Also, he hadn't been making it to the litter-box. She came and got him took him to my Vets they told her he didn't have any kidneys left. That he wasn't strong like he used to be. He had a huge frame like a Maine Coon I've seen him weigh 25 pounds easily. He was down to 8 pounds...nothing but skin and bones. He also had that hollow look to him as well. It was her choice on the decision. Very thin and had arthritis on hips big time. When he walked you could see the pain he was in. I worried about him breaking his hips when he jumped off the bed. He was my husband's sleeping partner for the last year. I told my husband I will not let him suffer anymore. He was about 15 years old. He was a long hair flaming red big kitty. My daughter told me that it only took less than 20 seconds for him to pass. That tells me he was ready to leave as he was very sick and fragile. He wasn't Felv. I buried him beside Sam, Dukee, Gutt, and Jake. I have buried 5 cats so far in the last year. As it looks like a Pet Cemetery now. God, this is tough. Dede, Bless you for giving him a home at a time of need before Smokey left to go to the Rainbow Bridge. I always make a point of reading your postings regarding Angel Ki. I had hopes that maybe he would shake it off again. His fragile body couldn't continue anymore but his spirit will always remain in your heart. He will also be looking over your shoulder. I wouldn't put it pass him to send another homeless kitty your way. This would be his sign. The day will come when we will be with our angel furkids again. This is what I like to believe. Your right on the WHAT IFS we can go crazy on this. As I know from my experience on losing my precious furkids. Re: Some of us are so new to this all.
Hello and welcome newbies! Please don't worry about had been said. Sometimes we have bad days and ventgod only knows I have been there myself a lot recently. There are some folks on this list that do forget when newbies join they don't know yet. Have no clue about the Archives. Many of us here are open to answering questions from new folks that have joined this great list. This is a great loving and caring group of people from all over the world. Like one huge family. We were newbies once ourselves. Please don't let it bother you. Sometimes things are taken out of context. I do feel we need to have the OT things whether it's humor or vital information regarding other Feline illnesses. Sometimes there are many cats/kittens that hit all at once getting sick or passing to the Rainbow Bridge. We need to express our emotions. It can be overwhelming but that is what this group is all about...too share and love. I have been on this list since 2001...I no longer have a Felv kitty. I can tell you many have different ideas and views. Sometimes we have other health questions pertaining to our kitties and will ask this group first. I know I have ask them. Like some of us that mixed or not. I did mix my Felv kitties with my non Felv kitties. The negative kitties were vaccinated and tested every year. I have never had one show up positive. I had senior and young kittens exposed to this. Now these are my personal kitties. However, I Do Not Mix rescue cats/kittens for safety reasons. This is group has over whelming information that can help our kitties. FELV is not a death sentence! So you have questions feel free to ask. I can't stress this enough! Geez, better stop starting to repeat myself...lmao! In a message dated 6/30/2007 11:11:54 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: There are some here that are new to this virus. I have never had a sick cat—I have been very blessed. But I feel doubly blessed to have people who are willing to share information with me even if it is the hundredth time they have posted it. Re: OT: Regarding a freak accident
Thanks Gloria! I also want to thank everyone else as well for your nice thoughts and prayers. He is doing well and the Dr. is confident that his arm will heal as long as he listens. The most important thing is to use his fingers and move his arm up around. The skin graft took and his surgical area looks great. He will be getting a cast on Thursday. Will return back to work in 2 weeks from today. Thanks again everyone! In a message dated 7/2/2007 7:24:37 A.M. OT:UPDATE ...FELV+ Kitty still at the vets ...
Anyone here on the list open to another kitty? Permission to Cross-post... Hi everyone, just want to send another update regarding CurlyQ, the FELV+ kitty in Miami, Florida. She just got spayed , got her shots and is doing very well,We are trying to buy her some time in hopes that a forever home is found so she is going to remain a the vets office until next week, before she goes to Dog's Inn. Although I'm thrilled that Tammy is willing to take her in, I'm hoping that a forever home is found before then. I know what u are thinking, that a miracle will have to happen, in order to find her a home by Monday/Tuesday! Well I do believe in miracles and I hope that God is watching over this girl. If a forever home is found for this girl the new family will never have to be worry about Maggie's medical bills. Whenever the need arises for her to get any treatment whatsoever HPR will cover the cost, we will also sponsor good quality food for her monthly. However she is incredibly healthy right now and may remain healthy for years to come! We are not rich but we are willing to do this if it helps this little girl get a home! We do not have a picture of her yet , she is a DSH gray with a little black dot on her nose, she is incredibly sweet and it was because of her sweetness that doc refused to put her down. She will need a home with another felv leuk+ kitties or with no other cats. FELV is NOT contagious to people NOR is contagious to dogs, it is only transmitted from cat to cat, through sharing litter, food bowls, toys, etc. Please feel free to crosspost this message.Thank you and God Bless. Anyone know of a FELV+ cat rescue? WA state
Can someone tell me the rescue here in WA that only takes Felv kitties. Purrfect Pals has a 2 month wait. So that is out of the question. Thanks~ I am sending this last hopeful email out to try and help Calvin, a Ellensburg shelter cat. He has tested positive for FELV. This is him when he came in scared back in April. He acted feral, then turned into a love bug. He got an eye infection, and while waiting for that to clear we got the diagnosis of FELV. I contacted 2nd Chance Cat Rescue (Emily Decker) but she says she is getting out of rescue. I contacted Purrfect Pals, but they have a minimum 2 month wait list to get into their place, and our shelter cant hold him that long. He has already been there 3 months and does not enjoy living in a cage. Anyone out there know of a rescue who accepts FELV cats? Or a family looking for another FELV cat? He gets along with cats. Hi James! Nice to hear from you it's been awhile. Glad your doing okay with your health. I hope you continue to thrive well. Always look forward hearing from you anyway! I have been on this group since 2001 I believe. I have seen a lot come and go but will stay on this group for how ever long because you never know. There are some good and loving people on this group. I know there are some of us that lurk and read the postings. But we are still here. Information to this group is vital whether it is Felv or not. Majority has something to do with cat illnesses anyway. I can honestly say this is a great support group as well. I'm not bother by the off the subject questions or comments. At times we need to ask or even vent some. Those of you that remember I said in the past when the day comes for the cure for Felv I will celebrate by eating cheesecake when we meet. (I can't stand cheesecake) Will eat it for joy and for my Taz. In a message dated 7/12/2007 8:44:09 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi Wendy and all, Sorry to take so long to respond to this concern. As has been posted, my health isn't that good. It's not bad, but it's not good either. When there are problems between list members, I tend to wait and let folks work it out for themselves (unless it turns into a flame war, of course). And, over the nearly ten years of running this list, I've only had to ban five people for continuing to cause trouble. This is a good list with good folk who are trying to care for their FeLV+ cats. There maybe differences of opinion on certain topics, but as long as everyone is respectful of others' opinions, all is well. Wendy, as to the problem with your Yahoo account, I'm not sure what to say other than Yahoo has had a lot of problems lately. They are testing various methods of SPAM control, so we are an occasional casualty. Also, I didn't receive your previous emails asking for assistance because the felvtalk-owner account is deluged with SPAM (several hundred per day now). To Caroline: Re: Monkee is gone
Caroline, I apologize for being late on my reply back to you. I just recently broke my footif it weren't for bad luck I wouldn't have any. I'm so sorry to hear about your precious angel Monkee. I too know what it's like to be there as well when they leave us. I remember not sleeping for at least a week or so kept having vivid dreams. It was sheer exhaustion that made me finally break. I questioned myself Why this kitty he endured so much in such a short time with me. Monkee doesn't want you to feel bad at this time so be gentle to your self. He is now at a place where there is no pain or illnesses playing with all the other angel kids. It does get easier over the course of time but you never forget the final moments. Take the time to remember all the good things about him. As stated by one of the other members the good things will overcome the bad things. Monkee will always be with you watching from above. Monkee will send another furbaby needing help at the time you don't expect it. This will be his way of saying Hey Mom help this guy out I believe when we leave we go to the Rainbow Bridge that we will be rejoined with our loved ones that means our angel furkids as well. Please don't be hard on yourself and take care. You are in my thoughts and prayers We are always here for you if you need to vent or just to talk. OT: Considering Donating to HSUS Keep in mind!
The Humane Society of the United States has mounted a huge campaign to raise money to care for the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's dogfighting ring. The plea comes complete with a heartbreaking picture of one of the injured dogs. (Not surprisingly, studies have shown that people donate more when shown a picture of or told a story about a single animal needing help. HSUS is very clever at fundraising.needing help. HSUS contribute, please note: 1) There is a disclaimer in fine print at the bottom of the form which says your donation may be used for other HSUS programs and may not be used to help the dog fight victims. 2) There has been no accounting for the nearly $20 million HSUS raised for the Katrina dogs and cats. The organization is under investigation by the Louisiana Attorney General for their handling of that situation. _http://tinyurl.http://tin_ (http://tinyurl.com/25avhp) 3) HSUS has NO shelter. It is a corporate office building in Washington, DC. It is supposedly overseeing the care of the dogs that were seized from Vick's house, but we don't know where the animals are, Will the shelter actually providing their care receive all the donations this campaign generates? 4) There is no reason to believe that your contributions will go to help the dogs seized from Michael Vick or any other dogs or cats. HSUS spends most of its money on legislative efforts to make dog breeding impossible and pet ownership more difficult, more expensive, and more dangerous. 5) HSUS claims its servers crashed from the response to their first appeal for money for these dogs, yet they are still out there beating the drum for more money, still claiming more is needed for the Vick dogs. And if you are still considering writing that check, read the following quotes from Wayne Pacelle, president of HSUS I don't have a hands-on fondness for animals. To this day I don't feel bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I'm kind to them, but there's no special bond between me and other animals. quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 251. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding. quoted in Animal People, May, 1993 When asked if he envisioned a future without pets: If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don't want to see another dog or cat born. Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 266. == Where are the millions in contributions they already receive every year? If you have money to contribute, please send it to your **local** rescue or shelter. Donations received by local rescues and shelters do help animals. The money sent to HSUS does not. Re: OT: Pet Burial Ceremony- for Monkee
That was very well said...Glenda! Caroline, If you go to the bottom of this email you will find the direct link to Pet Loss. I have been there many times on my losses. As I was so compelled to Taz before and when I lost him I really didn't think I would find others to love. But it sure help to talk to others about it. It makes it easier sitting behind the computer because nobody can see you cry. Even though it's human nature. God forbid I was walking in a shelter myself. Had no intentions of taking home cats/kittens. I saw some kittens that needed help and a new home. Guess what? I brought home 2 of them. Told my husband watch and don't step on the babies when he got home from work that evening. You see I didn't tell him:) He seen them too and fell in love with them. They have been with us now for 5 years. Don't get me wrong I still have a huge place in my heart for Taz. It's just easier now then it was. I shed tears and talk to him every year on the day of his passing. When I'm not feeling so perky I will talk to him as I still have his ashes they are with me next to the computer. My husband believes it was the work of Taz that made me become an official rescue. To help so many cats/kittens in the last few years. Whether they are Siamese or not. In a message dated 7/24/2007 6:24:46 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Caroline, I do not know who you have left at home to love, BUT, If you have room for another kitty, in your life, in your home... IF I WERE YOU, this is what I would do: I would go down to my local shelter, ASAP and look at all the kitties. I would try to imagine who Monkee would pick, if he were with me...Maybe this process could take a week or a month of going down and looking, but when my eyes fell on that particular kitty, that somehow touched my soul, I would bail the little guy out, pronto and run with him...Then I would go home and get to know the kitty that I had bailed out and I would try to imagine what this kitty would say to Monkee if he could...You know, the kitty would be grateful...I'd write it down, different things that might come to me... Then I'd set aside a special day, I would get my mom, the kitty I had saved from possible death or a not so good future, a bottle of wine, two glasses, something of Monkee's that was important to him, pour my mom a glass , me a glass, hold the kitty, hold the something of Monkee's. I'd tell Monkee how much I loved him and how much I miss him. I'd thank him for helping me find the kitty I was holding and I would think of all the good bright things ahead for me, my mom and the kitty...It would be sad, but it would be happy too. I'd try to make it a celebration. I'd drink my glass of wine and be sure to remember this day until the day I died ,because it will have been one of those very special days in my life...and maybe, in Monkee's memory, I'd set it aside every year to honor him by doing something extra nice for someone or some little critter or myself...THIS IS WHAT I WOULD DO, IF I WERE YOU... I would never just go find a complete stanger, even a religious type, to read my words or someone else's words...I think this needs to be a completely personal and sacred ceremony/celebration. Only those that deserve to be there should be there... (I really do hope there is a place, we can all go, to meet those we have loved and lost, after we leave this world. If there is such a place, I know Monkee will be there waiting for you. Caroline, you are so lucky ...you have so much to give...I have really enjoyed seeing the wonderful sides to you these past few days...You have the ability to do a lot of good for this world... to extra lengths now to make sure they are happy and most of all, safe from the dryer. Takarra is gone because I didn't look, but maybe my little fur angel can protect your cats from the same fate. Each time you do your laundry, please take 2 seconds to make sure your cats aren't inside before you hit start. no cat deserves to die a death like my Takarra did. Here is a poem I wrote for Takarra. Cat Nip Mice in Heaven I thought the months would make it easier, That time would heal my wounds- I miss you, my baby girl, with everything in my heart. I wish we were together instead of apart. I thought I could forgive myself for your death- I thought I could let go- I no longer cry each night- It still hurts so badly though. Can I ever forgive myself? Today you would have been one. I feel so bad, so guilty, Your life had just begun. Are there cat nip mice in heaven? I look up at night to see if you're playing among the stars. In my mind, I wonder if you found your way to the rainbow bridge, And in my heart I wonder if my wounds will ever become merely scars. I know it was just a mistake that God took you from me. Maybe he needed you more than I? Do you sit in his lap and purr? Or do you look down at me and cry? I know I look up often and hope you're watching over me- Some days it's harder than others to deal with the pain. I look for answers to why you were taken away. And when it storms, I wonder are there kitten tears in the rain? You wrapped your paws around my soul And you left love spots in my heart. You're my angel kitten now. It seems like forever that we've been apart. Enjoy the fields of butterflies. Until we are together again, Enjoy the Cat tree in the sky, And play with the cat nip mice in heaven. Happy birthday my sweet baby. © Chanda Healton Happy birthday my sweet Angel kitten! May you find all the happiness in the world on the Cat Tree in the Sky! I love you and you'll never be forgotten. I use this for my dogs. Haven't tried it on the cats or kittens. It comes in the tablet form for them as well as the powder. I've been using it for years. Re: Exactly what are my rights here?
I agree with what has been said in prior postings. When anyone surrenders a pet to a City/County shelter your rights end there. Some will work with you because the less they have to do the better. This is pretty wide spread through out the U.S. In some cases like different Humane Societies will have you fill out a form asking if you would like the pet back if owner can't be found. Then they would call you back. Most of the time you would pay the adoption fee which would include altering the pet if it hasn't been done so plus getting the vaccinations as needed. Otherwise the pet gets put up for adoption through their organization. If it is a Feral cat or just scared they have resources for this. This may include other rescues or interested foster homes. I hope and pray your able to help this kitty but it doesn't look good. :( Terrie Mohr-Forker TAZZY'S ANIMAL TRANSPORTS SIAMESE COLLIE RESCUE Donations accepted at: _https://www.paypal.com/_ (https://www.paypal.com/) _http://www.tazzys-siameses-collies.petfinder.org/_ (http://www.tazzys-siameses-collies.petfinder.org/) _http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wasiameserescue_ (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wasiameserescue) _http://hometown.aol.com/tatorbunz/myhomepage/petmemorial.html_ (http://hometown.aol.com/tatorbunz/myhomepage/petmemorial.html) _http://www.felineleukemia.org/_ (http://www.felineleukemia.org/) _http://www.hometown.aol.com/tatorbunz/index.html_ (http://www.hometown.aol.com/tatorbunz/index.html) _http://www.petloss.com/_ (http://www.petloss.com/) ** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

Re: OT Deer Hunters/Subject needs to change!
This subject needs to change! As we all have our opinions. I remain neutral as I understand both sides of this matter. This list is suppose to be geared towards our cats and kittens. I have been on this a long time I have to say I've never seen so much OT Subjects lately. We don't need to lose anymore of the old members here. Some have already left due too much OT matter. Some have left to go to the other Felv group. I think James would agree with me. Since he is the Moderator/Owner of this list. I know he has been ill lately. This list was started in memory of his precious kitty to help Felv kitties. There are some here that have great success with different protocols. Then with others it doesn't work. Once again everyone has their own opinions. So remember this is for hopes of finding a vaccine/cure to help Felv kitties. In a message dated 8/19/2007 12:57:57 P.M. Re: James are you out there?
Very well said! In a message dated 8/19/2007 4:11:02 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: James, I know you have had medical issues and are not able to frequent the felvtalk list as much as you'd like. I have gone digest and am not checking the list regularly either, but someone forwarded the post below to the felv-off topic group from felvtalk and I thought you should be aware of the downward spiral our beloved list has taken. As we've discussed in the past, ot discussions never upset me as long as they were not mean spirited or inappropriate topics for any 'pg' sort of gathering. Some of the happy stories shared in the past were very refreshing when intermingled with the inherent sadness that comes with having loved ones suffer from felv. It greatly saddens me to report to you that many of the long time members of this group have dropped off and it is no longer the comforting source of information and support it once was. It would be bad enough if mean-spirited ot discussion was the worst of what was happening, but that is not the only thing plaguing the list. With the absence of some of the lists more experienced caregivers, some of the information now being presented in a matter-of-fact sort of way is not only incorrect, but down right dangerous for the health of those we so wish to help. If something isn't done to get things under control soon, I fear the list that has meant so much to so many will never be the same again. It is sad on so many levels, but especially so for all the loving guardians of felv pos cats that will no longer have it as the valuable resource it once was for me and so many others. Re: Please talk to me/Angela
Angela, I'm so sorry to hear about your boy. Had he been re-tested recently for Felv? Normally, it is the secodary illnesses that take our Felv kids. Such as different cancers. Due to their weak immune systems. Did he have a biopsy done prior indicate what kind of cancer he had? How old was your boy? What are the ages of the kitties living in your house? I'm sorry for asking these questions but it does have bearing. If everyone has been together for 3 years you would have seen signs long before now if they were infected. Yes, Felv can lay dormant in the bone marrow even when they are tested young. As I know this for a fact. It has happened to one of my cats. It takes a cold or respiratory illness (URI) to bring it on even though they may have tested negative prior when healthy. That is why when you get kittens from unknown sources they should be retested every 3 months up to they are adults for accuracy. Adults should be tested yearly. I've had numerous Vets say most tests done as kittens are not accurate. When there are more than one kitty living in the house when one dies for unknown reasons a necropsy should be done by your Vet. Once again I'm sorry for your loss. Please take care of yourself. Your fur-babies are in my thoughts and prayers. In a message dated 8/21/2007 7:42:57 A.M. Re: Sylvester changed to Boots
Thank you for sharing this great story! In a message dated 8/25/2007 4:03:24 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: This probably is a bit off topic, but since we are discussing when cats pass away, I thought it would be of interest. I have a client that is a Buddhist, and he is also a Hospice caregiver. He tends to the dying,of course, and is there to hold their hand in their final hour. Anyway, he was called out of town alot, I believe he took on cases where people had no family, friends very little money. Sometimes prisons. So I took care of his 18+ year old cat that was also in renal failure. MIss Boots Big Tail, hated everyone but my client, Steve. His girlfriend was from China, and although she loved Boots, Boots always made a point to let her know she was second fiddle. And his girlfriend wasn't used to the concept of pets, for some reason (that was how he explained it to me) due to the part of China that she was originally from. Boots would insist on always being in between them when they would be on the couch, etc. Anyway, Boots would be visited by me 3 times perday when he was out of town and 2 of those times it would be for her meals (whipped Pet Guard or Wellness w/ her meds purified water added, and it had to be warmed up in a double sausepan.) She also recieved fluids. Boy, did he love this cat, only client I ever had that insisited on me removing my shoes when I entered his home, he did not want any germs to be brought into her from my other clients or my own cats. (Now I have a policy where I always remove my shoes or wear the nurse booties. I liketo respect people's homes) When Boots finally was in her last leg of her journey on earth, she could not walk and had to be carried everywhere. I of course, would need to clean her up,because she could not make it to the box. She was still so alert tho, and she was eating great. On the night that she died, he knew her time had come. He stayed up w/her all night, and about 4am he passed out from exhaustion for just a few moments, when he woke up, she was gone. We believe that she needed to go, but could not as long as he was awake. And the interesting part was, this cat was the last of 3 cats that he inherited from his ex wife when she died. I don't know any details, I never ask clients, I just let them talk and tell me what they feel they need to. When his wife died, she was buried in a pet cemetary w/ her other cats out of state. Her reasoning was that she always liked respected animals more than people,so she choose to be buried amoung them. He packed up Boots and took her out of state to be buried along side his ex wife Terrie Mohr-Forker TAZZY'S ANIMAL TRANSPORTS SIAMESE COLLIE RESCUE Donations accepted at: _https://www.paypal.com/_ (https://www.paypal.com/) _http://www.tazzys-siameses-collies.petfinder.org/_ (http://www.tazzys-siameses-collies.petfinder.org/) _http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wasiameserescue_ (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wasiameserescue) _http://hometown.aol.com/tatorbunz/myhomepage/petmemorial.html_ (http://hometown.aol.com/tatorbunz/myhomepage/petmemorial.html) _http://www.felineleukemia.org/_ (http://www.felineleukemia.org/) _http://www.hometown.aol.com/tatorbunz/index.html_ (http://www.hometown.aol.com/tatorbunz/index.html) _http://www.petloss.com/_ (http://www.petloss.com/) _http://tazzys.photos.homepagenow.com/homepage.shtml_ (http://tazzys.photos.homepagenow.com/homepage.shtml) ** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

Re: Pics of Genevieve
Sherry, My god I'm so sorry about this precious Beautiful girl. She had Jen there to help her. God only knows what her life would have been like if she didn't come into yours. At least you were able to spend time with her before she left. She will be waiting for you when the time comes. (Many of you heard me say this numerous times over the course of years) I do believe that we will be joined with our furangels at the Bridge. I have to tell you I have one just like her. Her name is Bugs real name is Missy but she never took to it. It's almost like looking at identical kitties. My Bugs is 6 yrs old now. She is dainty and don't take no crap from the males in the home. Got fire in her butt. She was a rescue at the age 5 weeks when a local shelter closing down was going euthanized animals. I end up stealing her and her brother. He is a big long hair black boy when I say big he is big. (18 pounds) But afraid of a lot of things. Husband calls him Chickenshit but he is still his Beau(his name...second to Vinnie/Vincent the Balinese) Yes, I may be a Siamese Rescue but I have other kitties in my home besides Siamese. I send you lots of hugs and headbutts from my gang. Please take care of yourself as I know what your going through it is never easy losing one we love so much. That is too funny! I have to tell ya that I think it is funny when he comes around the corner and I purposely move my foot. It just cracks me up something fierce! ROTFLMAO!!! Re: Question about eye ulcers
My suggestion is get the kitty in to be checked out by your Vet. Because you never know...second guessing doesn't matter. I've never heard of a Vet removing dead tissue around the eyes unless there was prior surgery in the area. I recently rescued a male Siamese/Birman from a smaller rescue that had a eye problem. I noticed it was purple and his right side of his face was whitish looking. Also, with Purebred Siamese even Siamese mix cats/kittens when they are ill or have something wrong with them they tend to get lighter colors around their face especially around their eyes. Normally the first signs with my experience. Being around Siamese all my life I've learned a lot about them and still learning. (almost 50 yrs) I questioned the smaller rescue as to why they didn't get the eye treated right away instead of worrying whether he was neutered or not. Anyway, the following morning of his Vet visit to be checked out his eye burst. Then came the oozing and pus. My husband about passed out when he saw this. So needless to say there was nothing we could do for this kitty's eye. His eye was removed and was on antibiotics for 7 days. You look at him now and see the his natural colors coming back around the face. By the way he is a huge Siamese/Birman (18 pounds still blooming) and a total love-bug! Also, want to include he was accused of getting all the female cats in his old neighborhood pregnant. (He was already neutered so the joke is on the neighborhood they got the wrong cat) He isn't going back!!! When he is totally better will be adopted out to a family that will love him. Re: Question about eye ulcers -Update
Oh ChrisI'm so sorry to hear this! Kaylee will be in my thoughts and prayers totally. This isn't something to stomach very well as I know. But there are cats/kittens that do make it through the surgery without any complications. Miracles do happen! My experience with this is you become a nervous wreck over this. Sorry for being straight forward about this. It's not easy dealing with something of this nature. Please read my pet memorial below my Angel Taz he had the same thing. In a message dated 9/8/2007 5:35:20 P.M. What she does have is a tumor. She will be going into surgery on Tuesday to have the tumor and, unfortunately, the eye removed. I am very worried about this since I have heard so many horror stories about FeLV+ cats not making it through surgery. Please say a prayer for a successful surgery, removal of the tumor and a good recovery. I know that smell and the color was yellow...yuck! One isn't looking so hot but drinking and eating. Others are doing well and playing. They came from a kill shelter from unknown sources. Re: Litterboxes
Hi all, I use Wood Pellets for my rescues and Fresh Step for my personal cats. When it is time to dispose of the dirty litter that consist of the pellets I take it outside and dump it all over in the back. I live on 3 acres it is absorbed into the ground and it also fertilizes the area for the wild life passing through. Wood Pellets are cheap and smell good too. (#40 sacks) I will hit the feed store and buy their damaged bags at 75% off the regular price $4.50 this is a great deal because the bags are barely tore then they seal it with tape. The Fresh Step is thrown into the garbage can. Re: for Lynne - good stories
Kerry, Thanks for adding the stories as I remember them when I joined many moons ago. It is refreshing to see this again. Still say that when the cure or vaccine to help the kitties I will eat a piece of Cheesecake as part of celebrating. (I can't stand the stuff...yuck) But will do it for the ones we have lost and for the current ones battling this horrible disease. BooBoo...responding this may be a little long :(
Lynne Bob, As I have been trapping cats and kittens in my area that are feral. Sorry for the delay of my condolences. This is a horrible disease especially if they have possible FIP on top of it. I have to tell you I did lose a fur-baby over a year ago to FIP. So I know the feeling all to well. I wanted to respond to this as I have been reading all the postings on your precious baby BooBoo. You gave him a home and very much needed love as he wouldn't have gotten if he had been in a shelter or roaming somewhere. BooBoo also knew how much the both of you loved him and wanted what was best for him. As he loved you too. I'm so sorry to hear about him as I felt like he was right here in my home. This breaks my heart when I hear about news like this. Your information about him was so clear and to the heart. Great Vets too that were willing to go the extra mile for you. You both were blessed with him even though it was a short time. God must have needed him as I know another fur-angel will be sent to you soon. I know this is quite fresh to you. It is normal to shed the tears for Boo-Boo. I have to say I did as well because I have grown to know him. I continue to shed tears on my loss but because of him being gone I'm stronger even though it's never easy losing one. This will make you stronger and more knowledgeable about FELV and other terrible Feline diseases. I know it doesn't feel like it right now but time is what eases the pain. Always remember the good and positive times. I hope you will continue to stay on the list as like many of us old timers even if you don't have a FELV kitty. At this time I don't have FELV kitty I have been on this list since 2001. You learn a lot from this group of caring people whether it's FELV or not. Your BooBoo has been greeted all the others that have pass and went to the Rainbow Bridge. I believe we will be with our furbabies when it is time for us to move on. So they await for us until further notice meanwhile they chase, play, run after butterflies or whatever catches their eyes. They are no longer sick and don't have to worry about ever being sick again. Free of all illnesses. So the both of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Please take care of yourselves and we are here for you. If you need to blow off steam that is okay too we will read, or listen and respond if needed. We are here for you regardless. If you go to my Pet Memorial below you can read about my Taz he too was FELV. P.S. As I've always said since day one I don't like Cheesecake but will celebrate and eat it when there is a cure or 100% vaccine that will stop FELV. In a message dated 3/2/2008 7:05:17 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: We lost our precious baby tonight. He developed difficulty breathing and we rushed him to the emergency clinic. He was dehydrated and had just had his lungs aspirated Friday. The vet recently experienced the same situation with his Himilayan, co-incidentally, though I sometimes think they make stuff up to identify with your pain. I held his little face in my hand and petted him as did Bob and he slipped away almost immediately. I don't think I've cried this much in my life, Bob too. At this moment I can't imagine ever being happy again. Sounds stupid but BooBoo conveyed to me this evening it was time to go and he thanked us. He was so very weak he could hardly walk but he was still purring as we pet him even with the damn catheter in. We know this was best for him but the worst for us. Thank you for sending this! Yes, I will eat a whole Cheesecake if this does happen as promised! Remember I can't stand the stuffLOL This is totally awesome news to read about. I'm excited I have requested to be on their mailing list as well. In a message dated 3/18/2008 7:35:24 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Just received this from _www.10thlife.org_ (http://www.10thlife.org/) newsletter, dare we hope??? Pilot Study Will Help Determine If New Cobra-Venom Drug Cures Feline Leukemia For more than a year we’ve been waiting for the federal government to approve a license application to use a new cobra-venom based drug in a large placebo controlled double blind research study that will scientifically determine if the new drug cures feline leukemia (FeLV). The manufacturer has already received approval from the State of Florida to proceed, but – if the drug cures the disease – sales would be limited to Florida veterinarians and Florida cat owners. Federal approval would allow sales anywhere. Because of the federal delay, Dr. Julie Levy of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine suggested we conduct a smaller 18-30 cat, four month, placebo controlled double blind “pilot study” using the Florida license. The pilot study will follow the same procedures and be conducted in the same manner as a larger follow-up study using 100+ FeLV positive cats. The larger study will be conducted if the pilot study shows good results. Good results from the pilot study could expedite federal approval for a larger study – which Dr. Levy would supervise. The larger 100+ cat study will prove conclusively that the drug cures, or does not cure, FeLV. The drug’s manufacturer will supply the drug to us for both studies (at no charge) and will supervise the pilot study (with the results forwarded to Dr. Levy). No harm will come to the cats. The drug is safe and there are no known side effects. For the last two weeks I’ve been looking for a location to conduct the pilot study (we can’t do it at the sanctuary). Once we find a place, I can put a final budget together. We will need to raise money for the pilot study and if we proceed to the bigger study, we’ll have to raise money for that, too. Donors to either study will receive a tax deduction. If the drug does cure FeLV, 10th Life will receive a royalty on each sale of the drug because (1) we are raising the necessary research funds (the manufacturer’s research budget is for human - not animal – trials), and (2) we will be supplying the FeLV+ cats. We will probably need more FeLV+ cats. In a few days I’ll know if we need more FeLV+ cats and will ask you, then, if you have, or know someone who has, FeLV+ cats that could participate in the pilot study. Most FeLV+ cats are routinely put down by their owners... this research is necessary because, if the drug cures FeLV, many lives will be saved. In the meantime, please continue to support us with a donation... I spend most of my time raising operating funds and now that I’m spending a lot of time trying to get this study underway, I am not out there raising operating funds. Please, we need every donation to continue providing for our 1,200+ sanctuary cats and for these potentially life saving studies. I totally agree with Gloria. Everyone has been exposed too late on separating them. There is no such thing as a light positive. It is either positive or negative. I can honestly say that I had positives and negatives live together for years. I vaccinated the negatives every year. Not one of the negatives died from FELV they died of other Feline illnesses. Well, her overall health is good, but she came back FELV positive. The vet said she can live a nice, long life with another FELV kitty, but we have not found anyone willing to try and adopt her out (we had some offers with her being blind, but not blind AND FELV--this kitty has just plain bad luck). Re: my poor snowy
Hi all, A few years ago some of you older members may remember Ling. As he is no longer with me as he had passed on to the bridge. For you newer members. I took in a male Siamese that was 19 yrs old that had the same thing. All of his claws on his front paws were in the flesh. So he the had surgery done ASAP immediately right there. When I got him I had noticed he was walking funny. Then I look at his paws thought to myself Oh My God there was no way I could do anything. I can't imagine the pain he was in. Poor old fella. I have to tell you though when it was done he was like a kitten again shortly after surgery. I end up losing him after a year to kidney failure but at least he had some happiness and medical care from me that he wouldn't have gotten elsewhere. Well I won't be taking Snowy in for spaying this coming week. I went to clip her nails tonight and noticed that there was a big lump on her right paw. When I touched it she meowed so I got her into the emergency vet. They told me I did nothing wrong that this had happened to her over a very long period of time. Her nail had grown into her skin, along with hair and they had to put her under and remove it. It had grown far into her pad and couldn't be removed easily. I don't get this. She had seen 2 vets prior to our getting her and no one noticed this. Now the poor little thing has to be on antibiotics (Clindamycin) and wear one of those horrible hood things so she won't lick her paw. She had a piece taken out of it and cauterized. I am so sorry for what this poor little dear has been through in her short life. I just hope all this trauma doesn't cause her herpes virus to resurface. The first thing the vet did when we got her there was to squirt eye wash into her eyes and she got all upset. I kind of yelled at him for doing that and asked why. Re: Hobbs, May 4, 2008
I'm so sorry to hear about Hobbs as I have been following this from the start. I send many hugs and headbutts to the family that cared and loved this kitty. At least he had some happiness with the family in which was better than he had before. Thanks for giving him a fighting chance and most importantly showing him love. Your in my thoughts and prayers!
