It also won't kill fleas. It may repel them for a while but unless you vacuum your floors every day, treat with diatomaceous earth and flea comb every one of them, they are going to be hopping in no time. In addition, a sad tail I can tell about "natural" flea treatments is my cat Teddy, now only a memory but when he was with me, I used a lemon oil and herbal based flea remedy that was "guaranteed" to rid my cat of flea problems. What it did rid him of was a nice swatch of fur on the back of his neck with a matching skin burn from the horrid stuff. The flea stuff cost much more than regular flea remedies and cost me several vet visits until Teddy's neck healed. I wrote the company a scathing letter demanding my money back and telling them to take the crap off the market but they refused to do either. I'm not a great proponent of herbal flea treatments after that experience. > > From: "dlg...@windstream.net" >To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org >Sent: Wednesday, August 28, 2013 10:35 PM >Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] ringworm > > >I don't like the commercial flea drops at all. I avoid any and all essential oils for cats. Dogs and humans can metabolize them, cats can't. They lack a liver enzyme needed to process the oils. I get very annoyed seeing substances containing essential oils touted as "safe" for cats because they're "natural". Cinnamon oil is particularly high in phenols, which are considered harmful to cats. http://essentialoilworld.com/essentialoilreviews/pet-health/essential-oil-safety-with-cats This is from a site that SELLS essential oils, but states some are not safe for cats. This is my favorite site addressing the use of essential oils around cats, and again, they sell them... http://www.thelavendercat.com/ I use Advantage on my non-FeLV cats and their dogfriends, and it seems to keep the flea population under control on everyone. It's up to each catslave what they choose to control those annoying little bloodsuckers, but just thought I'd give another point of view. Natural does not mean safe. I don't like the commercial flea drops at all. My cats have all had a reaction to them. I found an herbal one on Dr. Becker's site (Mercola site). It has cinnamon and other "natural" ingredients. The cats were not too happy with it at first, I think mostly because the cinnamon smell is pretty strong when it first goes on, but at least they have not had any adverse reactions to it. This includes my remaining FELV, Annie. trustinhi...@charter.net wrote: > I just wanted to share that I put Advantage-multi drops on my felv+ cat, Pookie, in june and a week later there appear 1 then 2 puffy lumps on his back between his spine. I still vote for the cream for athletes foot. I used it years ago on a cat named Munchkin for spots of fur loss. Didn't know it was ringworm, just whisked my fingers through it and hadn't a clue. Took him to the vet and the vet said ringworm. Eeek! But I never contracted it. Vet said I was probably exposed to it as a child and was immune. Whatever . I did use Program prophylactically on some of my own cats who were exposed to a rescued kitten I was fostering who was diagnosed with ringworm. No one caught it from him. Actually, ringworm is self limiting. The cats lose fur, their immune system kicks in if they are relatively healthy and the hair loss stops, the little whorls heal up and cat is good to go again. But if you like a messy, greasy cat, ask your vet about the athletes foot cream. Worked in a medical office for a good part of my early years. They used gentian violet for female herpes. Yow! My vet says to use 2 tblsp bleach to 1 gallon of water. And the vet from Revival Animal Health said he used 3 TBLSP to a gallon. I use lime sulfur dips or veterycin. I had it all over me last year. I had it from June until December. Did a lot of laundry and cleaning(-; By the way, oregano oil works very well on humans. Wish I would have tried it last year! Re: [Felvtalk] ringworm
The oral meds can be very hard on the liver, I believe Itraconazole (sporanox) is considered the "safest", griseofulvin and ketoconzole can be dangerous, Griseofulvin should not be used in FIV+ cats (one of the main people on the former Ringworm group lost his FIV+ kitty that way), and my understanding is that Ketoconazole shouldn't be used in cats. Personally I would not use either, but if oral meds seem necessary would stick to Itraconazole. Just a two cents, I'm not a vet but know many here are already dealing with challenged kitties so wanted to mention :-) On Thu, Aug 22, 2013 at 8:49 PM, wrote: > As long as it works, that is what is important. Orally I've used Grisiofulvin once or twice. I have one FIV kitty with skin issues right now and am using Sebazole (sp) and seems to work well for him. I get a wet rag and apply it topially, with warm water. Not sure what his skin problem is, though, probably not ringworm. Re: Ringworm
i think i read someplace, or perhaps it's just folk wisdom, that the only thing that'll actually kill ringworm spores is a nuclear blast--and those tend to really ruin one's day. (there IS one form of ringworm that is, essentially, an ingrown kind that causes horrible, terrible, untreatable eruptions and abcesses, but it's only been documented in persians and himmies, and one dog, if i recall correctly there is ONE researcher in the country working on it i lost my darling gypsy to it last april 13th, but she had an early form of it for years before it was finally diagnosed, and despite it having erupted and being really really disgusting, and her living in a houseful of persians, NO ONE ELSE EVER GOT ANY VERSION of it. not only that, but there have been more than 40 cats, at least, in and out of the apartment i used to live in at the sanctuary, and none of THEM have ever gotten it either. so i guess i am more concerned about a nuclear accident than i am about a little ringyworm.) Many thanks to everyone who has offered suggestions. I'm much less panicking about this. and definitely do NOT plan on throwing out the rugs, curtains, etc. First off, I gave up wall to wall carpet a long time ago and only area rugs that can be sent to cleaning make it through the door-LOL. Re: Ringworm
Hi Chris, Well, woods lamps are blacklights:) Things glowing everywhere could be a lot of things. Blacklights will detect phosphors used in ordinary clothes detergent, for example: http://science.howstuffworks.com/black-light.htm They also pick up urine and semen. I'm not sure about blood. So just because things are glowing doesn't mean it is ringworm - it could be the detergent you are using. Also, blacklights are effective about 50% of the time in detecting ringworm - about as good as guessing:) It is unfortunate you can't keep the cats confined. When I have a ringworm outbreak, I confine the affected cats to the bathroom, and then bleach every day. Re: Kerry - -Something for Bandy's ringworm maybe???
Thanks Belinda, I will check that out..I think I saw that in one of my natural books..I am putting goldenseal on it at times, too..I have ordered the gel from the site that you sent last week so that should be here in a day or so...I also called his internal med specialist and asked about giving him the fulvicin orally which I didn't want to do cause it is so toxic...It may be the only way at this point...She said to watch his stool, appetite and if he vomits...then the dose would need to be lowered or stopped...I really hate to make him sick like that as that is one thing that hasn't bothered him..I think he has an iron stomach with all the stuff he has had in the last year..It is supposed to be given for 40 days...I won't do that..I think I am going to start the IR next Monday.. He is suppose to go to the eye doctor in Dallas on Thurs, but I may not go since he isn't feeling well and it is an all day ordeal..at least 7 hrs on the road by the time we get there and back..Way too much stress on him... My old vet had a friend of mine dab diluted clorox on the places with a cotton ball. Since it's on Bandy's face you would have to be extra careful though. Re: Bandy and the ringworm
I am going to order the IR on Sunday myself to get it here by Tues..I want to get this started asap..Will it help his inflammation with his legs, too? Bandy's eye spec. said that the prednisolone eye drops would irritate the ringworm..It would make it linger longer..in other words it is making it more difficult to get rid of and why it has spread more on his face..It started as a small spot on his nose now it is has gone under and over both eyes...too close for me so I am really careful when I use the eye drops...I use a wet cotton ball to catch excess then I put his ringworm meds on and some other eye ointment around his eyes...I used neosporin on Inky, but can't on Bandy since it is too close to his eyes...It does seem to be doing better, but that really isn't my top concern right now...as you all know.. He did drink some water on his own today and ate a couple of spoon fulls. I am putting him back on the transdermal appetite stimulant as well...He went to the litter box twice while I was away and made it back to his bed so that made me feel better cause yesterday, he would just fall over and I would have to put him back.. Anyway, wish us luck...I am going to feed him now...and give him his meds... I will try to post what is going on as soon as I can... Thanks for all your help, Kerry and Bandy Talk is cheap. Kerry, maybe you should have her get it overnighted by Revival so it will get there on Tuesday. Michelle

Re: Bandy and the ringworm
Thanks everyone for all the advice...Now I just need to figure out what to try...Belinda, I checked out those links. I may order from the petsbestrx...It sounded good, but I wish I knew someone that had tried it.. Right now Bandy is very sick..I took him to the vet on Thurs since he can't even stand up...She took an xray of both front and rear since they are both giving him a problem..He also had almost 105 temp..I think he has an infection somewhere..He won't eat or drink...I did get him to eat some baby food beef, maybe couple of teaspoons..and he will drink alittle water, but not much..they gave him some sub-q fluids. I think I am going to take him in again today. She gave him an adequan shot, dex shot and polyflex..I upped his baytril to the full dose, but I think he needs something else.. Michelle, I told her about the immuno-regulin and she is going to order it next week...I need to know all I can about it...and she asked me to find out from you guys, what dosages you used and anything else we might need to know.. I have read what it says here at the home page... .5cc IV twice weekly and then .5cc IV weekly until symptoms subside...Is that a good start or what did you use? Please let me know and I will let her know on Monday...I hope we haven't waited too long..I am really scared for him right now.. Thank you all again, Kerry and Bandy Do you Yahoo!? Get on board. For cats, it's a VERY tiny amount, like 1/8 teaspoon once a day. I didn't have Bones on it for very long, she did great, and really, never needed it, I think. I was thinking it might help, but she really bounced back fast on her own! She's doing awesome... she would LOVE a HOME with someone.. she's up for adoption. There's pictures on my adopt page, down in my sig. You couldn't find a better little cat, all the cattitude of a Siamese, but snugglier. And she has the cute raspy type of meow. Phaewryn, Thanks for the idea about the MSM I have some in the house because I give it to Zevon, (our GSD with degenerative spinal mylopathy). What dosage did you use for Bones? How is our girl these days? Starman has been having a terrible time with itching lately. I've tried a number of things, one of the effective things that surprised me was using corn starch baby powder on his irritated skin. Re: Bandy and the ringworm
Actually, I am almost positive that someone said a long time ago that the Immuno-regulin helped her cat kick ringworm. I think ringworm gets more of a hold when cats have suppressed immune symptoms, like with FeLV, and the I-R gives the immune system a quick boost to help fight it. Maybe it would help the fever at the same time. Michelle

Kerry, It's good to hear from you. I was just thinking about you and Bandy and all your babies. I'm so sorry to hear Bandy hasn't kicked the darn ringworm yet, poor baby, (and poor you!). I'm glad he's eating, but sorry to hear you guys haven't kicked those fevers yet. Hooray that his blood count was better! It's such a roller coaster ride, isn't it? You're such a good mom. Hi Kerry, Sorry Bandy is having such a problem with the ringworm still, I was looking up natural and other remedies for ringworm and I came across these: http://www.newzealandnz.co.nz/discussions/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/8264/an/0/page/0 http://www.petsbestrx.com/ringworm/index.html?wcw=google there are a couple of testamonials on this site. I don't have any experience with either of these and I'm not sure if Manuka Oil (used in the first link) is dangerous to cats or not. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... When I use the golden seal, I put it on every day. The kind without alcohol, can go on the face too. The nutritional support sounds good - the colostrum and interferon etc. I was just looking at some other alternative stuff for one of my kitties, and found this, which mentions ringworm - I didn't know this kind of stuff was anti-fungal too - http://www.nzymes.com/ product_blackleaf_black_walnut_olive_leaf_tincture.htm I've also been told to use 1/4 of a Program tablet with cats, for ringworm. Re: Bandy has ringworm on his nose
Yeah, dabbing the topical meds on the individual spots is the best way to medicate for it. It probably wasn't you spreading it, it floats in the air, so just having the central heat on would be enough to contaminate the entire house. Don't worry so much, it's just a little fungus, the same one that causes athlete's foot, annoying but generally not serious. It can on rare occasions develop into a skin infection, and require antibiotics, which you found out. The best advice I can give you for the scratching is to put soft paws claw covers on his back feet until he heals, this will keep him from ripping his skin open. Re: Bandy has ringworm on his nose
Thanks for all your replies.. Jenn, I am worried as my 19 yr old Inky now has it...He has a bad skin infection cause he scratches it all the time..I took him in the other day and they cleaned it all up good..she wanted me to put him on the oral fulvicin, too..I told her it made Bandy sick so I haven't given him anymore..I have given Inky 2 doses and not the full cc about 1/2. He is very hard to medicate...She also put him on clavamox which I know he needs..He eats his pills in his food..He seems to feel good as he eats alot...I am worried that Inky will get it all over...is that possible cause of him scratching all the time??? I don't know what to do for him..I don't want to make him sick or something...When he bends over to eat, I use a qtip with the topical ringworm med on it...spread it on there as best I can...Will that do the trick or what else can I do??? I think Bandy's is healing ok..but with all the eye meds he is getting right now...he is just very irritated and hates to see me coming...It is 4 or 5 times a day for something... I must have spread it to Inky from Bandy before I knew what it was...they live in opposite ends of the house and have no contact.. This has made me a nervous wreck cause I have never dealt with it...I have washed all beds and their towels and bleached what I could. Anymore help would be appreciated.. Re: Bandy has ringworm on his nose
Kerry, ringworm will go through a cycle and go away ON IT'S OWN if left alone. NO need to medicate unless you have a multi-cat household were it can cycle along through all the cats and pass back and forth (where, it theory, it could cycle endlessly and never go away). Vets commonly over medicate for ringworm, which, in itself, is a relatively harmless fungus. Itchy, but NOT deadly. I would never orally medicate for it, period, it's just NOT that big of a deal, to give toxic meds to a cat to cure something so harmless. Oh and yes, YOU can get it too, ALSO not a big deal. On yourself, put a dab of bleach directly on the fungus daily, and it will kill it. (don't bleach a cat, they will lick it off and it will make them sick) Just MY opinion, of course. Re: Bandy has ringworm on his nose
Thank you all for your replies..I went to the vet yesterday and asked her to please make Bandy an appt. with an eye specialist in Dallas...We aren't getting any where with what we are doing so I believe he needs the specialist to figure out what is really going on here...I asked her to give him something else, and she called in a prescription of prednisolone drops...It was almost like immediate relief for him..I have given him 2 treatments so far and he seems to be able to get around some now..I even got him to play with his string...I think he could sort of see it..He was very cautious walking around, but at least he did it...I got him to scratch on his post, too..I was scratching on it and he went to it... They also told me the other day that if I didn't give him the oral meds for the ringworm, that he would get it all over his body..I haven't ever heard of that..and I think that stuff was making him feel sick too..so I didn't give him any on thursday..What do you all know about that?? fulvicin is what it is...It is strong stuff...I am using the topical conofite that she prescribed..It seems to be helping..I have some goldenseal in the fridge, but I don't know if it is too old to use and if I should use it with the prescription med..I can get some more if I should use both.. Bottom line, I think, about his eyes...is that we need a specialist to try to save his eyes and quit messing around with it..I just hope and pray that I haven't waited too long..They would clear up then it would start all over again...I know he probably has the chronic form of anterior uveitis, and we can deal with that..I just need to know for sure what to do..as it can result in glaucoma...she did that test on Wed and his ocular pressure wasn't elevated yet..I also found out if there is a fungal infection going on with the eye that the steroid drops aren't good for him...so I guess that test would have to be done by a specialist..as really the steroid drops are the only ones that will work for his condition... I hope I haven't confused everyone going back and worth with all this..It is alot for my little guy to handle all at once... We are thinking of all of you and your furbabies..I hope they are all doing well today..and our prayers go out to you that have lost one.. thanks once again, Kerry, Bandy, Inky and Angels Buster, Lil Rascal and Snoopy Love cheap thrills? Re: Bandy has ringworm on his nose
Kerry, I am so sorry to hear about Bandy. My Angel Stinky lost her sight the last year of her life. She managed very well. I didn't move anything I left her food and water dish just where it had always been. So she knew where to go out of habit. Also she could smell her food. Her sense of smell seemed like it got a whole lot better after she lost her sight. It broke my heart to see her like that but she always managed to find where I was and get into my lap. I think she might have been able to see shadows. I hope they can reverse Bandy's blindness. I will be praying for the two of you. I am located in Chicago as well. Precious Pets __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
