Thank you ALL for your kind words. Lynne you are right, these beautiful babies give me such love that all the sorrow that comes along with each loss is bandaged with the love of yet another poor baby that comes along that is willing to let us love them when no one else would.I dont know if that made much sense. :) Once again Thank you ALL. On a good note my beautiful Melina is still going strong!!(cross our fingers) she is always fighting with a snotty nose but she is a pistol. She is my heart. It will be a tough loss like my Marley was when she ..Ok no negative thoughts on my girl!!! Sending lots of healing vibes for Sebastian. I pray the acupuncture--or the tests if you go that route--helps him. I think the fact he's enjoying eating is a great sign---so often I've been desperate (in what turned out to be their last days) for mine just to show some--any--interest in food, but they never did regain their appetite. Re: Sebastian
I know it is horrible and I would be freaked out too, but I truly believe that if he purrs when you are near, eats, and even plays with string, he is not as bad of as many. That is a lot of quality of life. Humans who lose the ability to walk also get depressed, but their life continues and they can get joy and satisfaction in the other things they are still able to do. It sounds like the same is true for Sebastian. Is it just his hind legs? Have you looked into getting him a cart? Just thank god that Sebastian is a cat and not a horse, because he can still live, play, eat, and interact without getting up and walking around. Jennifer, only you can decide what is best for Sebastian. If there is any way you can at least get blood work done, I would encourage you to do that. You can learn a lot from that. Sebastian will tell you what he wants. Just sit with him, and let him tell you. Sometimes they want us to help them cross over and sometimes they don't. I had one who never told me he wanted help, and he crossed over on his own. The rest asked for help. It was never easy to realize that they were ready to leave, but if it's what they want, then I will help them. I do not envy you having to go through this right now. How do Sebastian's gums look? Are they pale? How's his breathing? He could be fighting anemia...but I'm guessing the vets would have tested for that when they saw him last...are they leaning towards something neurological? It may help your piece of mind knowing what is going on with him...it sounds like Sebastian has enough strength for both of you...let that guide you so that you can get to the bottom of his illness. Re: My ANGEL Sebastian
I think that it is reasonable to feel like you should let him be, and let him live, especially since he still has a good appetite. Does he like attention? I don't know if you were on the list in January, when my Simon, who ultimately died a month later, was so bad he was unable to walk, etc. Everybody on the list, including me and the vets, thought he was dying. Many people thought I should euthanize him. But even though he was not eating or anything, he purred when I pet him, so I just stayed with him. Three days later, when I thought he would be dead within hours, steroids given days earlier kicked in and he improved to the point that he was running around the next day. He had only one more month, but it was a good month. I am glad that I did not euthanize him then. You do not know what will happen. However, I also think that you are right to rethink doing the tests now that he is in such bad shape. I think it might be worth the risk. But that is a tough call too. I am so sorry that you are going through this. I have been there. There is nothing worse. Is there any point to give Interferon And Immuno Regulin?
Re: Sweet Sebastian
I'm sorry to hear about Sebastian's continuing leg problems, Jennifer. Earlier this evening I filed the email below for my own future reference, from fellow listmember Laurie, sent on July 18, and I thought you might be interested in it with a view to the next step with Sebastian. I'm sending lots of healing vibes for Sebastian--from everything you've described he's such a brave little cat and sure deserves a break. Wishing you and Sebastian all the best Kerry Hello, I have written numerous messages to the board about my cat, BJ. Well, we adopted another cat, a female orange tabby named Mitzi. Both are feline leukemia positive and both are doing great. For those who might not know our story, here it is. My brother and I adopted a black and white domestic shorthair we call BJ. At the time, he was perfectly healthy. Then, three weeks later he had polyps in his left ear and had surgery to remove them. His middle ear was removed and his left ear closed. He has had no residual effect and his hearing is fine. Then, about two months later, he began having strange, unexplained fevers and was lethargic and not eating well. The diagnosis was feline leukemia. The prognosis given by our vet at the time, a traditional vet, was grim to say the least. She said the best thing to do was to have BJ euthanized. We immediately started looking for a vet who could help. Our last appointment with that vet was on a Friday. We took BJ home that night and had a consultation with an alternative vet the next Monday morning. She practices holistic and homeopathic as well as tradition veterinary medicine. Some of her methods are not recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Some traditional veterinarians would bristle at her ideas about good dog and cat nutrition. However, today, under our new vet's care, BJ is, for all intense and purposes, healthy. He shows no outward sign of illness, even though he still tests positive for feline leukemia. For anyone looking for good veterinary care for an FeLV+ cat or kitten, the best suggestion I can give is to contact the AHVMA, the Holistic Veterinary Medical Association using this link http://www.ahvma.org/referral/. It may help you find a vet in your area who can treat your cat's or kitten's condition. I wish I could tell you how much it means to my brother and me to have a vet who has made the choice to treat feline leukemia, not just kill the host. She has the knowledge expertise to do what a traditional vet could not do. When we were given BJ's diagnosis a year ago, it was like getting hit by a truck. When we were told there was nothing to do but put him to sleep, it was like getting hit by a truck again. We knew very little about the illness then. However, we knew that if there was any chance that our precious BJ could live a good life with this disease, then that's what he would do. We have never looked back and are thankful every single day that we made the choice to get BJ treated. Our vet also successfully treats our little one, Mitzi. She is now almost nine months old and is a curious, rambunctious, lively cat. Our non-traditional vet has made a world of difference for our entire family.Laurie B. Re: Sweet Sebastian
Jennifer, I'm sorry Sebastian's visit to the vet wasn't more optimistic. It does sound like you made the right decision about not doing further tests. My German Shepherd suffers from Degenerative Myelopathy, (degenerative spinal disease). I too was told that there wasn't anything I could do to help him. Does what they think Sebastian is suffering from have a name? I did a search for DM for my Zevon on the web and came up with a couple of sites that talk about diet, medication, massage and exercise, (to keep the muscles in his back legs from atrophying). The things I'm doing, (Flax seed oil, Lyprinol, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, MSM in his food, massage and exercise), have definitely helped Zevon. When I brought him to the ER, he could barely stand, they treated him overnight with, (I'm sorry, I never did get it completely straight), some sort of mega steroid treatment and his function was a bit improved in about a week. Since then he has improved somewhat in mobility and has not had any further loss of function. Might Sebastian be helped with anti inflammatory therapy? Interferon A lasts for at least 6 months in the fridge after it's reconstituted. I'm praying you find the answers you need to help Sebastian, Nina JENNIFER RATLIFF wrote: I was finally able to get Sebastian in to see an internist and a nuerologist. I haven't had that problem with a cat but I have had 2 dogs who have had problems helped by an alternative vet who practices acupuncture. Hi, I am wondering if it’s related to nerve, if acupuncture will work for him – I know what you mean about steroid – my holistic vet is the only one who seriously warned me about the side effect of steroid – and I usually have said “no” – unless it’ was absolutely necessary (which I did with my dogs when they had a disc problem) - and two years on the steroid seems awfully long time to be on - I think that vet prescribe steroid and antibiotics for that matter way too much without considering serious side effects - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of JENNIFER RATLIFF Sent: Wednesday, July 27, 2005 9:42 AM To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Sebastian Anemia has been ruled out for Sebastian. Re: Sebastian
Hi. I remembered today that you should look into Cushings Syndrome. I do not know if cats get it, but dogs, horses, and humans do. It comes from too much cortisone (which depo is a form of). Sometimes people develop it from their bodies producing too much, and sometimes from having a reaction to getting it supplemented long-term with steroid shots and pills. Common symptoms include weakness in the hind end and weight loss. In horses they tend to grown strange long hair, but I think in humans it can result in hair thinning and in cats it might also. I believe the only cure is stopping the cortisone (and no real cure if it comes on without steroids being supplemented). Michelle

No, V-B-12 methylcobalamin is not only for diabetic cat – if you go to a health store, they will tell you that this form of the vitamin B is much more better absorbed than other form of V-B – regular V-B is not absorbed well in their body (my holistic vet told me the same thing) – I have been using a pill of V-B-12 methylcobalamin every day to her (she is feLV positive) – it’s helps the nerves in hind legs – please try – it will not hurt, it can only help! Do you give him CoQ10? It helps with gum problems. I give it to my positives every morning mixed in baby food with other supplements. Has the depo helped with it a lot? I would really take Sebastian to a board-certified internist about his problems. I really would think all these symptoms could in fact come from being on depo for so long, but from what you say it sounds like he does better on it. So maybe something else is going on. Get yourself a decent vet that will work on your behalf in finding a way to help your boy. (Even your crummy vet should be able to tell you how much Vit B to give). I don't know if that will help Sebastian, or not. Vit B helps perk them up, I do know that, and it's given to kitties that are having a problem with absorbing nutrients from their food. Did you ever find out about Sebastian's potassium levels? It sounds like his legs are getting worse, if this is the first time you've seen him having trouble holding himself up to defecate. Please get on this asap! Nina JENNIFER RATLIFF wrote: Thanks so much Nina and Hideyo for all of your help!!! The vet was pleased with the results of Sebastian's blood work. I have checked on the b 12 methylycobalamin. He is not diabetic. Should I give it to him anyway to see if it will help? Is there a maximum dose because I know that you can overdose on some vitamins? Everyone just seems to think that the weakness is just becasue of the leukemia, but I refuse to believe that. His blood work was good and I want to try every option to try and help his legs. Has anyone seen similar problems in their positive kitties? Sebastian was on a high dose of depo medrol for about a year and a half. This may be the cause of the weakness. I just need help. I feel overwhelmed.

Jennifer, Who are you taking Sebastian to? They are ignorant about FeLV. This is not a "symptom" of the disease. Re: Sebastian
There is NO way that his weakness is the direct result of his leukemia virus, because all the leukemia virus does is weaken the immune system to other diseases. So if it is the result of a disease, it is some other disease-- which he may have gotten due to having a compromised immune system from the FeLV. Or an injury. There are long-term effects of depo, including muscle wasting. When did the depo end? If it is from the depo I would have expected it to start while he was still on the depo, as that is when his muscles would have been wasting. Our dog who was on steroids long-term developed weakness in her hind end also, but she developed it while on the steroids. Michelle

Jennifer, I must have missed the message about what's going on with Sebastian. I think it's great you've got a vet willing to do some of Dr. Plechner's tests though. Did you already run a regular total body function blood test, which can tell most of the organ functions, blood count and so forth..if not, I would recommend that you do it also – but I am glad that his mood is good. Jennifer, I just thought of something – he is not diabetic at all? What was his glucose level? And how are his paws/ankles when he stands on hind legs – is his ankle touching the floor or can he lift it? There is a disease called neuropathy, which their hind legs get really weak - It happened to Leo, and the below fixed Leo in a couple of days: please read below: Please try V-B 12 called methylcobalamin (it’s different from regular V-B 12 ) – it works really well on neurological problem - And it’s safe, it’s very effective for some degree of neuropathy. So do start your cat on methylcobalamin (3 MG give BETWEEN meals is a good starting dose. You can order it on the phone at 888-433-5266. I recommend Lifelink’s Xobaline (zo-bah-leen) brand, and it comes in 60 tablet bottles of 3 MG tablets. They’ll ship it Priority, and you’ll have it within 2 or 3 days if you’re in the US. But you can also get it at a regular vitamin store - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of JENNIFER RATLIFF Sent: Friday, June 24, 2005 11:25 AM To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Sebastian I took Sebastian to the vet to get some blood work done. Re: Sebastian
Jennifer, I feel for you. I know how hard it is dealing with a loved one's illness. I can understand why you are crying yourself to sleep at night. That helpless feeling can be overwhelming at times. Please try to control the worry and anxiety. I know it's easier said than done, but Sebastian is still with you, his mood is good, try and take your cue from him. Do your best to enjoy the time you have together. He hasn't left you yet, don't act as though he has. Talk to him and tell him how much he means to you, that you're happy he's part of your life and grateful for the lessons that you've learned together. He wants you to smile. He loves you, it can't help him to know that he is causing you to be unhappy. Focus on the quality of the moment when you are together, not the fears for the future. Keep searching for ways to help him, cultivate a positive attitude and don't waste this time together. Nina JENNIFER RATLIFF wrote: I took Sebastian to the vet to get some blood work done. Re: Sebastian Update
I'm glad to hear Sebastian is doing better! There aren't any vets on the website for W. Virginia, or even Virginia, so what you'll probably need to do is just call around to all of them in the phone book. A good opening question is "I have a cat with Feline Leukemia, what should I do?" the really bad ones will tell you that there's not much you can do, and that you may just consider euthanizing him, so you'll know right off to cross those off the list. If they reply, "Well, it depends on the cat, and if he's acting sick or not." then you might want to ask that vet more questions, like "I've heard that there are treatments for FELV, such as Interferon and Immunoregulin, do you have any experience with using those treatments for FELV+ cats?" If they say yes, then they may be a good vet to use, if they say no, then they may just need to be educated, OR they may not be willing to be educated. If they say no, ask them "I have a lot of info about the new treatments for FELV, and I'd like to try them on my FELV+ cat. I know you don't have any experience with this sort of thing, but if I bring you all the info, will you help me develop a good treatment plan for my cat?" If they say they are willing to learn, then that may be the best you can find in your area (it was the best I could do around here). Those are just suggestions to give you an idea of things you can ask. Just start at the top, and work your way down the listings in the phone book. You can use a marker in the phone book, cross out the ovbiously bad vets, and maybe highlight the ones that sound the best as you go down. Then when you narrow it down to a few possibilities, you can call them back, and ask if them what their payment policys are, where they are located, and their prices in general. Do a drive by of them all, check out the condition of the facilities, make sure they are in neighborhoods you feel safe going to. Use your own judgement, and choose one. Try him/her out, if you get bad vibes (or no vibes), next time try another one, until one just "clicks" for you. I really believe you will just know when you find the right one. Another thing I like to make sure of, is if the vet is up to date on current vaccination protocols. Are they even aware of the AVMA's current vaccination site locations? http://www.avma.org/vafstf/sitercmnd.asp ANY vet that goes to give ANY injection in the scruff of your cat's neck is a BAD VET! If you see him/her approaching your cat's neck with a shot, STOP him, her, and ASK, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!" and take your cat elsewhere ASAP! You can even ask them before you make your appointment, "Is Dr. Whoever aware of the current vaccination site recommendations for felines as stated by the AVMA and AAFP?" if the receptionist does not know, then you can ask her "Does the he/she give cats their vaccinations in their scruff, or in the lower legs?" Here's a good place to start, all of these WV vets are members of the AAFP (the American Association of Feline Practioners): http://www.aafponline.org/find_results.php?name=&city=Any&state=WV&zipcode=&Submit=Submit All AAFP vets should at least know about how to properly vaccinate and the correct vaccination schedule (every 3 years in most cases): http://www.aafponline.org/resources/guidelines/vaccine.pdf Jennhttp://ucat.ushttp://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html ~~~I collect KMR kitten formula labels for Bazil, a 3 yr old special needs cat who must live on a liquid diet for the rest of his life.Bazil's caretaker collects labels and sends them to KMR, where they add up until she earns a free can of formula!PLEASE save your KMR kitten formula labels for Bazil! Jen I used immuregulin on fiv cat with anemia, Where do you live? My vet didn't know much and used a protcol book, found a vet who was very experienced with this and he helped me a lot. You may look up on felv archieve someone used it on a felv/anemia cat way back. Carla

Re: Sebastian needs help!!!!
Hello, Jennifer, When my BJ was diagnosed with feline leukemia in July, 2004, I began to research the disease and its treatments. Acemannen and ImmunoRegulin (correct spelling) are treatments for the disease, according to what I read. However, I would go to someone who knows how to administer the drugs correctly. At the time of BJ's diagnosis, we were going to a traditional veterinarian who "recommended" that we euthanize him right away. The vet said that feline leukemia a fatal disease and the BJ would just keep getting sicker. I was not about to give up on him. I knew that if feline leukemia was a treatable illness and that BJ could have a good quality of life, that's what he would have. I immediately got on the Internet and tried to find out everything I could about the illness. As a result, I found that it could be successfully treated by vets who practice alternative veterinary techniques. I looked for such a vet in my area and found one in the Yellow Pages of my local phone book. She has been a God-send. Later, when the virus flared up in BJ, our new vet treated him with prednisone. I am not a veterinarian and cannot dispense medical advice. I am not saying that prednisone is what should be given to Sebastian. I am saying that if Sebastian were mine, I would find an alternative vet in my area who knows how to treat the disease. Everyone else might just be guessing and that can possibly be worse than doing nothing. During my search, I talked to anyone who would listen and told my story. I specifically asked each vet if he or she was successful in treating feline leukemia. I asked about treatments they use, their success rate, the potential life span with the illness, etc. When I found a vet who seemed to fit BJ's needs, I made the first available appointment with her. I have NEVER regretted my decision. I hope this bit of advice has been helpful. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. Laurie B. Also, he could have lymophoma, a cancer which positives have a tendency toward. It is often responsive to chemotherapy, but it would need to be diagnosed first. So I would try to get to an internist. Re: Sebastian needs help!!!!
1. Where are you located? You should definitely try a different vet. I suggest that you try a board-certified internist. They are usually located at large veterinary hospitals and vet school clinics. Do you have any of those near you? If so, call and ask if they have an internal medicine department with an internist on staff. They tend to be better and more knowledgeable, though, like with anything, they vary too. 2. I have used Immuno-regulin for bad upper respiratory infections and pneumonia and it seems to work. The dosage is .25 to .5 ml once or twice a week, by IV injection. You can order it yourself and bring it to the vet to give to him. You can order it from Revival Animal Health, online. It sometimes produces fever, chills, and diarrhea for a few hours afterwards, but sometimes has no side effects at all. I have seen both, with my two cats I have tried it on. 3. You can also try feline interferon, which your vet has to get permission from the FDA to order. The info is in our archives. It is different from interferon alpha, available in the states. Three of us have tried it and have not been as impressed with it as we had hoped, but it is hard to say exactly what effect it has had because there are so many variables and we do not know what would have happened without it.
