RE: : Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the

2015-05-14 Thread Craig Ede
I was remiss in saying that the FM 7.2 upgrade to FM12 was $800. I had
forgotten that in comparing the prices back when TCS5 was first released that I
had a FM 10 license that I could upgrade as well as a FM 7.0 license.

So the only upgrade path was for FM 7.x was to get TCS 5 for $1200. Worth it, I
think.

Here's my list of bugs from FM10 (I had most of these problems with
FM9 but didn't have to use it enough to bother making a list), have
they all been fixed?

1. Document window size and position are not saved.

2. Docked panels often appear behind the document window, and I have
to resize, minimize, or close the document window to use them. Since
window size and position are not saved, I have to resize them dozens
of times a day.

3. Sometimes I have the opposite problem: the side of a window is
completely blocked by the character or paragraph tag catalog, so I
have to minimize, close, or move the panel before I can resize the
window.

4. When I open a panel, sometimes it appears behind another panel
that's already open, and I have to move one or the other before I can
use it.

5. The first time I press Ctrl-f, I can just type the search string,
but after that the focus within the Find/Change seems to be random, so
I can't.

6. After a book has been open for a while, it no longer responds to
menu commands. I can double-click files to open them or use the
right-click menu, but if I try to select a menu command such as Edit >
Update Book or File > Save As PDF the book window minimizes and is no
longer active. The only workaround I've found is to close and reopen
the book window, which I end up doing dozens of times a day.

7. A separate FrameMaker button appears on the taskbar for each file
that's open.

8. The FrameMaker console window appears behind the application
window. Bringing it to the front is sometimes difficult.

9. When I first start FrameMaker, Ctrl-F6 switches between open
windows. After a while, it stops working. (I can use alt-key menu
navigation.)

10. Alt-key menu letters are not displayed for all menu commands (e.g.
Documents on the Window menu).

11. If I Alt-Tab to FrameMaker from another application, pressing
Alt-Tab again takes me to another FrameMaker document window (if more
than one document is open) instead of back to the other application.

FM9 broke some keyboard shortcuts but in FM11 they work again. (I
skipped over 10, so I don't know about 10.) The only thing is that the
first time after opening FM, when you use certain keyboard shortcuts
like F9, there is a few second delay. After that it's fine and all of
them work, F8, F9, etc.

They also have added some nice keyboard shortcuts for repeating the last
command (previously there was one for repeating character command and
one for repeating paragraph commands), and adding/removing conditional text.

I've heard 12 is even better than 11 in terms of stability, aside from
the additions.

To what extent will FrameMaker let me change the design?

RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread Craig Ede
upgrade to from FM7.x to FM12 $800upgrade from FM 7.x to Technical
Communications Suite $1200
For the extra $400 you get full Acrobat XI and not just the headless distiller
FrameMaker uses when you buy it alone. That's worth $400 to me.Besides that you
get RoboHelp 11, Captivate 8, and Presenter 10 as well and can play around with
the Help options offered by RoboHelp.
Opening older FM files does not require MIF save. Just open them and resave. I
do it all the time with FM5.0 files and up. Copy your older files to new
directories so that you still have them in case you think something went amiss.
The UNICODE stuff is only a problem when backsaving to versions before 8 or 7.2
which I don't recommend.
As someone else said, the retooling of ZapfDingbats (in bullets, etc.) and
Symbol font usage is perhaps the biggest issue. Usually you can pick a glyph
from you normal font(s) to replace these special use fonts since the modern
versions of the fonts have many more glyphs. If you have the Symbol font, you
don't have to replace Symbols with the "simpler" same font glyph unless you
want to.
Good luck,
Craig ___

Fundamentally, unstructured FrameMaker has changed very little. I've opened FM6
in recent versions and had zero problems. New features have been added but old
things all work pretty much the same.

FM8 switched to Unicode. Anything using the old Zapf Dingbats that was bundled

FM9 introduced a new UI layered on the old one (when you drill down, you may

FM12 added the core features from RoboHelp (look for "multi-channel publishing"

Re: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread Robert Lauriston
Fundamentally, unstructured FrameMaker has changed very little. I've
opened FM6 in recent versions and had zero problems. New features have
been added but old things all work pretty much the same.

FM8 switched to Unicode. Anything using the old Zapf Dingbats that was
bundled with FM will need to be redone. Any other symbol or dingbat
font may need cleanup.

FM9 introduced a new UI layered on the old one (when you drill down,
you may still see dialogs unchanged from FM5), which broke a lot of
keyboard shortcuts, many of which they never fixed. If you're used to
driving everything from the keyboard and never touching the mouse,
you'll probably hate it and have a bad month or two getting used to
constantly using the mouse.

FM12 added the core features from RoboHelp (look for "multi-channel
publishing" in the docs), so you probably won't need to upgrade
ePublisher or buy RoboHelp.

That's exactly how I did it (full jump from FM7 to 12). I also took the FM
essentials course in Lynda.com, which covered all of the new stuff with
the UI.

You can now create all those from FM12 directly; however, the learning
curve will be a bit of a shock - the UI changed completely starting in
FM9. I think at 7.2 you're over the Unicode barrier already so fonts may
or may not be an issue. Some finer control over the publishing
(generating) of help outputs can be done using the Tech Comm Suite (which
includes RH, FM, Acrobat Pro & Captivate), but may not be necessary in
your case. Personally, I'd download a trial copy of TCS5 and try it out on
a non-production machine with copies of your FM7.2 content & play around
with it for the 30 days of the trial.

Re: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread tom . beiswenger
Hi Caroline,

I recently did this same upgrade (going from FM 7 to FM12). The learning
curve was not bad. Mostly, it's getting used to a totally new (and way
better, in my opinion) user interface. I recommend taking the FrameMaker
10 essentials course that is in Lynda.com. Adobe changed the UI at ver.
10, so virtually everything that is in that class applies to FM12.

File conversion, so far, has been pretty clean. I've had only minor
problems, I have a set of templates that I use for various parts of our
manuals (Title pages, TOC, Preface, Chapter files, and Appendices. Each of
these templates has a number of paragraph and character formats that are
unique to them. Once I was up to speed on FM12 (about a week, I think), I
converted the FM7 templates to FM12 (start by opening the files in FM12
and allowing FM12 to make them FM12 docs). Then, I went through my
paragraph and character format catalogs and modified the tags, as
necessary.

>From this point on, when I open a manual that was created in FM7, I first
open the book file, then open each doc in the book file, save it (as
FM12), then close it. Then I open my templates and import the formats
(usually just paragraph and character) as appropriate. I then save the
book (as FM12) and I'm ready to work! I have some manuals that are 600+
pages and the whole process for them took maybe an hour or less.

Good luck!

RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread Keith Soltys
It's been so long since I have been using Frame 7.2 that it's hard to comment
about a learning curve. Certainly, some of the basic stuff hasn't changed much
(sigh) but there have been a lot of interface changes and some usability
improvements.

I think you will have to convert to MIF. You may want to get a copy of MIF2GO,
which is now open source and free. That will speed up the process.

I'd stick with WebWorks. It's fast and stable and you're familiar with the
workflow. You have some template rebuilding to do, but it would be easier than
trying to learn RoboHelp. (The publishing features in Frame 12 are fairly basic
and you will need RoboHelp to do any serious customization).

Regards
Keith

Let me clarify: you are still going to apply formatting in the EDD, but
instead of specifying each property individually, just specify paragraph
formats.

Hi Theresa,

There should be information in either the Structured Application Developers

you are first starting out, I would shy away from applying formatting via
the EDD. Instead, just specify the paragraph format you want for each of
your elements. Since you probably already have an unstructured template,

Thanks to all for the pointers to building my own EDD using the manual
"Developing Structured Applications" (Structure_Dev_Guide.pdf) from Adobe.

Where can I go and find out more about what the structured
elements/attributes mean?

I've had no success with Adobe.com or the Framemaker 12 help pdf.

Specifically at the moment, I'm trying to find out how Frame decides when
and how to apply "FirstIndentRelative" i.e. relative to what? In following
the instructions, it seems to me all I did was input a value for a Paragraph
Indent, but I have not told Frame any rules about WHEN to apply this
command.

For those who don't have this exercise fresh in their memory ;-) there has
been an Indent (0.3") added in all contexts to the Section element.
The Title element has a (-0.3") FirstIndentRelative.

Is there some place where exists a list of elements & attributes which
discusses what each means?

Thanks,
Theresa

BTW, Adobe patches are usually intended to be applied in order. You might need

FrameMaker 10 failed globally on January 1, 2013, apparently due to a time bomb

To their credit, Adobe quickly released a patch. Unfortunately, the early point

RE: Help? Disappearing Conditional Tag in FrameMaker 9 book & file

2013-01-26 Thread Judy Chen
I selected all the files within the book before trying to turn on the
specific conditional tag, but also tried with individual files. In both
instances, the specific conditional tag remained unavailable to turn on
(either in the book or for most of the files within that book).

However, the matter is resolved per my other email... I imported the
conditional tag settings from one of the "correctly behaving" files
within the book to all the other files in the book, and that seems to
have solved that problem!

Thanks.

Some other CSS setting is higher priority.

Personally I think it's a bad idea to mess with the defaults for link
colors, so I'd fix it by deleting those from the stylesheet.

Hello,

If someone could please help me, I'm having trouble turning on one specific
conditional tag within my Frame 9 book and files. The properly conditionalized
text does exist in the file (exists in all the files within this book), but for
some reason, the tag is not showing up in my "Show/Hide Conditional Text" work

conditionalized text in several books and files and this is the first time this

Thanks for clarifying, Dov. During my searches for an answer to the

missing glyph that Windows was lying to me about, I came across sites

such as Fontzone.net and cufonfonts.com that offer free versions of the

font, and such as linotype that offer Myriad Pro but hide the fact that

it's Adobe's in a nearly invisible line of grey type at the bottom of

the page.

I paid Adobe for my version, so I know for sure that's the one I'm using!

RE: Help with unicode and question marks

2012-09-18 Thread Christine Snow
Myriad Pro font does not contain the checkmark glyph. Viewing the entire glyph
set can be done here:

http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/singles/linotype/myriad_pro_regular/?&fg=00&bg=ff&sample_size=36&sample_text=&ft=liga&acs_pt=32

Instead of Window's character map utility, might consider BabelPad for
viewing/searching glyphs and fonts as it offers more features/friendlier too.
When viewing Myriad Pro, it does not show support for the checkmark glyph that
Windows does. Another method is viewing the Glyphs palette in InDesign.

It would be interesting to know why Window's character map indicates
otherwise...

"Myriad (being a proper unicode font) simply doesn't have that checkmark glyph."

The Unicode character is 2610. Whether Myriad Pro really contains that
character or not is an open question.

"Windows 7 character map is misleading as it seems to display replacement
glyphs from other fonts"

Windows 7's Character Map doesn't always fill in missing characters from other
fonts, there are lots of OpenType fonts where it shows
U+2610 as missing, e.g. Verdana.

Thanks Wei Jiang,

But Christoph Korsmeier has the right answer. In Windows 7, I can
"verify" in Character Map that Myriad Pro definitely has the glyph; it
appears in a group of glyphs that is also peppered with boxed-X's
indicating missing glyphs, leading one with "certainty" to the
conclusion that Myriad Pro includes the checkmark. It's a lie.

In Windows XP, the Character Map shows the truth: the entire part of the
unicode range that Win7 claims to include that glyph (and a whole bunch
of other dingbat-style glyphs) is nothing but boxed-X's. Evidently Win7
and Microsoft products like Word do a behind-the-scenes font
substitution, which FM does not recognize. (According to forums,
neither does Photoshop, so perhaps it's Adobe-wide.)

I know how to work around this issue, but I've wasted a lot of time
uncovering Microsoft's malfeasance; I'm extremely annoyed!

Thanks to all,

The Unicode character is 2610. Whether Myriad Pro really contains that

Windows 7's Character Map doesn't always fill in missing characters
from other fonts, there are lots of OpenType fonts where it shows
U+2610 as missing, e.g. Verdana.

Hello Alison and Stuart,

Myriad Pro IS a Unicode font. The thing is, that specific character, and
many other characters in the same group, are not included in this font.
You can verify this in Character Map.

So, Unicode is a way to encode the characters in a font, but that font may
not include all characters. Even if in the so-called "catch-all" font Arial
Unicode MS, some characters are missing!

Re: Help with unicode and question marks

2012-09-18 Thread Christoph Korsmeier
Hi Stuart,

the Windows 7 character map is misleading as it seems to display replacement
glyphs from other fonts, where the font you have selected has them missing.
We just switched from Windows XP a week ago, and now I'm annoyed I can't view
what's actually inside a font anymore.

Myriad (being a proper unicode font) simply doesn't have that checkmark glyph.
You might want to try other fonts from your system, since if your charmap
displays it, it should definitely be somewhere.

Thanks for looking, Alison, but Myriad Pro is definitely Unicode -- it's
an OpenType font (purchased from Adobe). Adobe says:

"The OpenType format offers outstanding benefits to users:
cross-platform font file format, Unicode encoding, rich linguistic
support with the capacity to support over 65,000 glyphs..."

And the checkmark glyph certainly exists in the font; it appears in the
FM character and hex utilities, it works fine in Word, it appears in the
Windows Charater Map in the Unicode subrange "Symbols & Dingbats".

Seems the problem lies with FM; alas, I may have to take Robert's advice
and call Adobe Support .

I'd guess that you're being asked to apply a condition named HTMLOnly.
Presumably, if your FM documents serve as single source for both print/PDF
deliverables and online help, there are some things that should appear in one
deliverable, but not another (e.g., you wouldn't want references to "this
chapter" in the help; you might want "this topic" instead).

So presumably, your FM template contains condition formats for this purpose
(mine are simply named Print and Help). In the WebWorks project, you can
specify which conditions to show and which to hide.

If you're not familiar with FM's conditional text functionality, you might want
to read up on that.

False, at least as of a few months ago. You can also buy an annual
subscription for one person for $800 or $900.

Bill,

Pricing for ePublisher settled down more than a year ago. Changes were
made to the EULA to allow folks to purchase just what they need, no
more, no less. Express seats are a cheaper alternative for folks who
just have to run conversion without designing targets. Those go for
$295 per year. And finally, with our change over to a contract
licensing model, you have full control over who uses the seats you do
purchase. They are yours to use and abuse as you like.

Again, all of this related to WebWorks ePublisher. If you are thinking
about have things were done for WebWorks Publisher a few years back,
you'd see things are quite different now.

No phones in your office? Does not compute.

They have an interesting approach to pricing, and one that I'm not too
keen on. They size up your need and price you according to how many
seats and what types of technologies you need. They're taking a
CMS-like approach to product sales.

Adobe's Technical Communication Suite. It has FrameMaker and RoboHelp
(with integration between the two, which you don't get if you buy the
products stand-alone) plus Acrobat, Captivate and Photoshop.

http://www.adobe.com/products/technicalcommunicationsuite/

It'll take some getting used to, but I've found it to be a decent
alternative to WebWorks (and I've been a WebWorks user/expert since
1998).

My team has been using MadCap Flare with FrameMaker for years to create
CHM and html help files. Once you have everything set up and know how to
use it, creating online help in either (or both) formats is very easy.

I have been using WebWorks epublisher Pro version 9.2 to convert our
FrameMaker documents into online help for our applications. Recently my
laptop started having problems and they are moving me to a new laptop.
The

company
and we can't find the CD with a serial number. I noticed a version of
WebWorks comes on the FrameMaker 7.2 CD but it is called WebWorks
Standard.
I thought maybe this is where the WebWorks came from. Is WebWorks
Standard
the same as ePublisher pro? Even if it is, no serial number I find on
any
of our CDs seems to work with it and Adobe can't seem to help me. When
I go
to the WebWorks page I can't get help there either because I don't have
a
maintenance contract. I don't think WebWorks actually *wants*
customers.
When I try to find out how much it costs to buy a new copy, no prices
are
listed unless you have a sales person call you. We don't have phones
in
our office.

I am pretty fed up with it all and am thinking of moving the help to a
new
platform. Can you suggest another help platform that works well with
FrameMaker files and looks similar to ePublisher? I need to produce
online
help in both .chm files and html files.

Re: Help Tools

I had a similar issue with a recent WebWorks upgrade which I solved by
calling them: 877-693-2967. It bothered me that that was required but
it got me to where I needed to be. WebWorks changed licensing models
between 9.2 and ePublisher and that might be an issue but it could be
easily solved with a call.

All,

Thanks everyone for your suggestions with my Help tools question. I will
definitely look into Mif2Go and I've used RoboHelp in the past, although
it has been quite a few years so I'll need a trial download. I will also
give WebWorks another try...maybe I can get some help from them.

Again, thanks for your input. I do appreciate it!

Re: Help Tools

2010-10-13 Thread Art Campbell
Webworks standard is an early version of ePublisher. The Standard and
Pro essentially mean that one cannot modify templates; the
professional version can.

In any case, whatever tool you use is likely to achieve the look and
feel of your help file by manipulating CSS style sheets, not by
proprietary coding, so I think you have severral choices for help
tools.

If you've done massive amounts of tweaking to the ePublisher
templates, that may be your easiest way to go. Along with that, I
can't believe that their customer support department can't give you a
new code There must be documentation on the purchase somewhere --
a PO or credit card info.

However, if you're staring from scratch, I'd go with either MIF2Go
from omsys.com or RoboHelp, as in the Technical Communication Suite.
Both are strong and well-integrated. I prefer MIF2Go for most projects
because it's simpler for me to use (I'm a config file kind of guy) and
bulltproof once it's set up. And their customer support is exemplary.
But RoboHelp comes with fancier, spiffier templates and it's designed
to integrate well with Frame at the menu level.

I know MIF2Ggo and Robohelp have free eval versions available. I think
it's waning in popularity recently, but a number of people are big
fans of Flare, so that's a possible third avenue to go down, although
that's more of an authoring package rather than a conversion tool to
pull content from Frame.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Art

Re: Help Tools

2010-10-13 Thread David Spreadbury
Pam,
Mif2Go (www.omsys.com). They have a free demo that you can try before you buy.
It works as a Frame plugin and works with just about any version of Frame.
Features and all that info on what it can convert too is available on their
website. Costs less than $300, plus a yearly maintenance/upgrade fee. It will
do everything that WebWorks can do, and probably more. If you are doing DITA,
they have a Dita2Go also.

ePublisher Pro and WebWorks Standard are two different products. ePublisher Pro
is the current WebWorks variant. The Standard version was shipped with Frame
7.2, more as a teaser I think.

If I was a betting person, I would bet that you will be hearing from Jeremy
this morning with similar words on Mif2Go.

I have been using WebWorks epublisher Pro version 9.2 to convert our
FrameMaker documents into online help for our applications.  Recently my
laptop started having problems and they are moving me to a new laptop.  The
writer who installed epublisher on my laptop is no longer with the company
and we can’t find the CD with a serial number.  I noticed a version of
WebWorks comes on the FrameMaker 7.2 CD but it is called WebWorks Standard.
I thought maybe this is where the WebWorks came from.  Is WebWorks Standard
the same as  ePublisher pro?  Even if it is, no serial number I find on any
of our CDs seems to work with it and Adobe can’t seem to help me.  When I go
to the WebWorks page I can’t get help there either because I don’t have a
maintenance contract.  I don’t think WebWorks actually *wants* customers.
When I try to find out how much it costs to buy a new copy, no prices are
listed unless you have a sales person call you.   We don’t have phones in
our office.

I am pretty fed up with it all and am thinking of moving the help to a new
platform.  Can you suggest another help platform that works well with
FrameMaker files and looks similar to ePublisher?  I need to produce online
help in both .chm files and html files.

Hi Pam

No, WebWorks Standard is not the same as ePublisher Pro.

There is a Yahoo wwp-user group, so you can post your question there:

Quadralay (Ben Allums) is actively participating in that group, so I'm sure
you will get help there.

Or you may find some answers in their wiki:

No, you can place those variables (or others, or static text like "More") in
heading and footing rows, which repeat automatically on each page/column. So I
suspect the solution lies in using heading and/or footing rows instead of (or
in addition to) a title.

But I can't think of any way to have "More" appear in all the footing rows
except the last, unless you script a fix to be applied just before
printing/publishing. For a FrameScript solution, contact Rick Quatro
(frameexpert.com).

One way:

In your table, create 3 pgf tags, OpenBrkt, Ref, CloseBrkt.

OpenBrkt is defined with "[" as its autonumber, pagination set to
Run-in, and Next pgf = Ref.

Ref is defined with no autonumber, pagination set to Run-in, and
Next Pgf = CloseBrkt

CloseBrkt is defined with "]" as its autonumber.

To create a biblio entry, tag an empty cell with OpenBrkt, press Enter,
type the reference code, press Enter. Then in your body, x-ref to the
Ref paragraph tags. You can mess with x-ref format definitions to
include opening or closing brackets for various scenarios, but it's
probably easier just to type them each time before/after the x-ref(s).

If you have a lot of entries already defined in your table, you can
change them quickly. Put the OpenBrkt tag on the clipboard with Copy
Special, select the first column of your table, and Find/Change each "["
by Pasting (Look In Selection). Then Find/Change To Text with nothing
in the replacement box, to get rid of the original typed "[". Repeat
for "]".

2009-11-19 Thread Art Campbell
I did something similar for my thesis, and it worked fine for me but
that's still a small sample.

I started with a table similar to what you have set up, but also found it
kind of limiting. So I migrated to using a separate FM file for each work
(and something about the work in the file name, for easy ID).

On the first page of the file, I used uniquely named paragraph tags for each
part of the citation: Title, Author, Publisher, and so on. Each one became a
simple cross ref that was unique and was easier format for different
purposes, for either footnotes or the bibliography, depending on how you
order the series of cross-refs.

Everything under that was text, which I used for my own notes, some of which
I used in the thesis and most of which just stayed hidden.

It would be pretty easy to convert your tabular format to a file based, but

First, you're always going to get a "font warning" when you change
printers. That's because even if the printer you changed to has all the
fonts you need, they may have different font metrics, causing line
breaks in your document to change, which may change page breaks, which
potentially may wreak havoc on your pagination (especially if you have
hard page breaks in your document) and make entries in your index, TOC,
etc., incorrect.

Second, this is not a bug -- it's FM trying to protect you from
yourself.

Third, and most important, DO NOT create PDFs using a physical printer
driver -- ANY physical printer driver. ALWAYS use the Adobe PDF printer
instance -- ALWAYS!

Having a font available on your printer is not the same as having it
installed on your PC. Acrobat Distiller _cannot_ access fonts on your
printers, only fonts installed on your PC.

Even if there is no font problem, a PDF created using a specific
physical printer driver will have all the limitations of that specific
printer. If it's a monochrome laser printer, your PDFs won't have color.
The physical printer's non-printable page margins will apply. And who
knows what other device-specific limitations and special PostScript code
will be applied to your PDFs.

ALWAYS use Adobe PDF for creating PDFs.

Thanks, Richard. Sorry I didn't provide background information. I have a
feeling the font causing the problem is in a graphic (which came from
the Marketing department, who uses different fonts than the

I'll also use your suggestion about replacing the fonts permanently,

FM is punishing you for ignoring that missing font message for so long.
;-)

Seriously, if the font's not being used (for instance, it exists only in
a catalog definition or on a reference page), it shouldn't prevent
Distiller from creating the PDF. Does the file contain an imported
graphic that might contain the font?

Further diagnosis would require further information. In general, it
helps if you provide specifics like the OS, the FM version, the process
you were using to PDF, the point in the process when it failed and the
exact error message, the name of the missing font, etc.

Here's the easiest way to get rid of missing font messages -- if they're
not coming from imported graphics or text insets, and you're really,
really sure the font shouldn't be there: Close the file with the missing
font. Go to File > Preferences > General. Clear the Remember Missing
Font Names check box and click Set. Reopen the file with the missing
font. You'll get a slightly different missing font message because this
time you're being asked if it's OK to replace the font permanently.
Accept, save the file, and the font is gone. If you care about what it's
replaced with, you'll need to learn about font mappings in the maker.ini
file.

Lea,
When you are printing to a file it doesn't really matter if the physical
printer is out there. You are only using the driver and creating a
postscript file, even if you use the SaveAs PDF, a postscript file is
created.

On your Marketing graphics, they should be able to embed their unique fonts
in their graphics, which should get rid of that problem.

Re: Help: File gone berserk

2009-09-14 Thread Philip Sharman
Wow, this is very strange.

I've been running into this same issue lately, so I did a quick test and
that hidden table format is well and truly hidden, even from MIF which
really surprised me. If I export the file to MIF and open it with a text
editor, there is no mention of the missing font anywhere in the MIF file.
And yet FrameMaker insists it is there, every time I open the FM file. But
the good news is that exporting to MIF and then opening the MIF from inside
FrameMaker finally kills off the zombie table definition. (So does
unchecking "Remember Missing Font Names" in the preferences, but that might
change more than you want.)

This is using FrameMaker 7.2. I don't know if the behavior is any different
in later versions.

To make simpler, I think we should all stick to Courier New :-)

your document, and it's not identical to an existing table format in your
document, Maker creates a new table format under the covers, and stores font
information with it. If you copied from a document that uses font X, then your
document will now expect to have font X whenever it opens.

The new table format can be created such that you have no direct access to the
format definition. That means that you can't change the font definition.
These table formats aren't even exposed to the API, which means you can't get a
plugin or FrameScript tool to fix the problem -- believe me, if it was exposed
to the API there would be fixes available.

The only fix I know of is to open the file in MIF and search/replace the font
name. I think you need to replace all variants of the font name, but I'm not
sure... I'm kind of font-stupid, and I'm not sure what MIF does with
incomplete font declarations. I have always removed all variants of the name...

I suppose another thing to try would be to copy/paste all the content from your
document into a new file built with a clean template. This would assume that
the offending font is never included in any of the visible content, and you
have no format overrides. I haven't tried this -- it just occurs to me now.
Who knows... I could work.

I really wish Adobe would expose this information in the API.

Try opening the offending chapter file(s) before running the PDF
process and run it again. The PDF should complete and in the error
log, show a list of what fonts are missing.

As already stated, it is likely that there are fonts used in otherwise
non-visible pages or even specified in paragraph or character formats,
used ad-hoc in even one space,...

Lea,

The only font *visible* is Arial, but FM may have other font names saved
in the file on reference pages or in table tag definitions. The fact
that the message is intermittent suggests that between sessions your
default printer has changed (perhaps from a physical printer to AdobePDF
or vice versa). When a physical printer is the default, it reports its
resident fonts to the OS, which then falsely informs applications that
those fonts are actually installed on the PC. When the default printer
changes, poof -- those fonts are gone.

The SetPrint plug-in from
http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm
eliminates that problem.

More info, and instructions for cleaning up files:

If you care about what it's
replaced with, you'll need to learn about font mappings in the maker.ini
file.

HTH!

You could save the file in question as a .mif file and open it a text

I'm afraid you have to try and and approach the original author for an
explanation of the recommendation present in the dialog box...

The more named destinations you have in a PDF, the larger the file size is.
This setting was introduced in FM6 to help reduce the PDF file size.

When "Create Named Destinations for All Pgfs" is turned off , some
cross-references and hypertext links may be non-functional in the PDF.

I much prefer a PDF where all links work as expected, even if its file size
is larger by 20-25%.

If the file size is critical, I would recommend other ways to reduce the
file size (including that portion related to named destinations, but not
through FrameMaker).

Unfortunately, there is no lack of PDFs authored in FM demonstrating the
outcome of having this option turned off, including PDFs from Adobe -- see
http://www.microtype.com/Hmmms.html#0605 (109 bad links in Adobe FrameMaker
7.2 "Structure Application Developer's Guide").

Two additional points:

-- There are cases where the hypertext markers are all valid, yet the
resulting link is very small due to the character format affecting the
marker only (eg when copying a gotolink marker from one paragraph to
another, with the two paragraphs having different character properties).
You can fix this by first applying "default paragraph font" to the entire
area, then apply the required character format to the link text.
The link location/size can be inspected in Acrobat (when the Link tool is
active).

-- If the link works in FrameMaker (view only document, or regular document
with Ctrl-Alt-click), but not in Acrobat: in FrameMaker's PDF Setup dialog
box, turn on "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs" (Links tab).
A sample FM7 files which demonstrates a valid hypertext marker resulting in
a non-functional link is available at:
http://www.microtype.com/resources/bugs/dests_hypertext.zip ; the PDF link
is fine when turning on "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs".

The Validate will also do things like checking for the existence of the
gotolink marker specified.

You'll get a nastygram from Frame if you put in the gotolink prior to

Sue,

If you create a new link and give it the identifier "checklist" (as in your
"what I am doing" procedure) then you should use that same ID as the
destination when you insert the "Jump to Named Destination"
hypertext marker.  Perhaps it was inadvertent, but your example has
different 'names' and I would not expect it to work, either in FM or PDF.
Also note that the names are case-sensitive, so "checklist" and "CheckList"
are different destination names.  You will still see the hand pointer (as
you hover over the hypertext marker), but because the names don't match, the
jump can't find the target to move the insertion point.

The "validate" function only really verifies that you have the syntax
correct for the marker you're adding, not that the command will work as
expected.  After all, you could enter the "goto" commands first, then define
the destinations as the second step...

You can test a link by temporarily locking the document via Save as View
Only or the escape sequence Esc F l k (four separate key
presses: escape, Capital-F, lowercase-L lowercase-K ; this toggles the
locked or "view-only" state of the document) or just hold the control and
alt keys together as you hover over the hypertext marker.

I hope this helps.

4. In the Syntax box it says "gotolink" and then next to that I type
in the word that was used at the destination point "server" all lowercase
5. The checkbox for "Validate Command upon Insertion is checked
6. Click on "New Hypertext Marker"

So, now from here is apparently where I get lost.

If I save as "view only", I will get the hand pointer and it looks like
it will work.

However, if I click on it, nothing happens.

If I make a PDF, nothing happens.

Please, what am I missing?

Thanks,
