[Framers] Structured FrameMaker 11, version 11.0/0/380 – Issue with Avenir Fonts

2020-02-27 Thread George, Brenda
This is a follow-up to a previous post. I have additional information
concerning this issue and would like some input.

I am working in Structured FrameMaker 11, version 11.0/0/380 in a Windows 10
environment.

I’m encountering a font issue involving the following Avenir fonts:
AvenirLTStd Medium.otf (Avenir LT Sid 65 Medium)
AvenirLTStd MediumOblique.otf (Avenir LT Sid 65 Medium+Italic)

In the FrameMaker paragraph designer, when I select the Avenir 65 Medium font,
the only available choice that I had under 'Weight' was 'Bold'. The choice of
‘SemiBold’ was not available. I was not able to apply the ‘Bold’ and ‘Bold
Oblique’ versions of the Avenir 65 Medium font.

I downloaded a free version of the following fonts and installed them:
AvenirLTStd Medium.otf
AvenirLTStd MediumOblique.otf

This resolved the font issue. Both the ‘SemiBold’ and the ‘Bold’ weights are
displaying in the paragraph designer, and I now can apply the SemiBold and Bold
version of the fonts.

We did not experience any font issues with other Adobe products when we were
using the original set of Avenir fonts. This font issue appears to have only
occurred with Adobe FrameMaker 11.

The question is whether this issue was caused by the 2 fonts that were included
in the original font set:
AvenirLTStd Medium.otf
AvenirLTStd MediumOblique.otf

or whether this issue is correlated with FrameMaker 11, version 11.0/0/380?

Any thoughts concerning this will be appreciated.

Andy,
The mapping of elements to system variables was incorrect in early
versions of FM 2019, see https://tracker.adobe.com/#/view/FRMAKER-5408.
This bug has been fixed so updating your copy of FrameMaker should solve
the problem.

Subject: [Framers] Table Continuation variable issue in Structured
FrameMaker

Hi Framers,

Hope you can help me out here.

I am using Structured FrameMaker 2019 32-bit version 15.0.0.393 on Windows
10 Enterprise Evaluation edition.

In my EDD, I have a system variable element called TableContinuation defined
as follows:

*Element (System Variable): TableContinuation*

*System variable format rule*

*1. In all contexts.*

*Use system variable: Table Continuation*

To be valid, my structure requires the TableContinuation element to be
inserted in the TableTitle element, as shown here:

*Element (Table Title): TableTitle*

*General rule: ( | ph | Xref)*, TableContinuation*

For several years everything has been working as designed. Now, suddenly,
inserting the TableContinuation element causes the Filename (Long) variable
to be inserted within the TableTitle element instead of the Table
Continuation variable.

I have searched high and low but cannot find what is causing this behavior.
I notice that inserting the DefaultSystemVariable element in my EDD produces
this result:

*Use default system variable: Filename (Long)*

I see no way of changing this setting (although it has always been
configured thus and never been problematic until now).

Does anyone have an idea what is causing this behaviour?

Thanking you for you time,
Andy Lewis

Re: [Framers] extendscript examples for structured FrameMaker

2016-05-03 Thread Scott Prentice
I've got one set of ExtendScript functions that operate on structured
content. It's pretty simplistic may not be anything more than what
you've got already ..

http://blog.leximation.com/2013/03/custom-scripting-in-the-dita-fmx-book-build-process/

Also, I have some samples from a 2011 tcworld conference workshop. I
can't imagine that there's anything in there that isn't covered in more
detail in Russ' samples, but you're free to take a look ..

http://leximation.com/downloads/tcworld-2011/

The best way to learn how this works with structured content is to read
the FDK docs (from any release after 7). The model is basically the
same, and it'll give you an idea as to how best to proceed.

I learned Framescript by looking at examples, reading Rick Quatro's

I don't have any particular projects in mind. Just want to be able to

Structured FrameMaker and Selecting Nested Elements in Context

2015-01-29 Thread quills
In FM 11 there was a keystroke mouse combination that allowed one to
select text or an element, and a drop-down menu would appear with the
context relevant elements for application. This menu would also allow
one to select a series of elements that would nest in the correct context.

This seems to have disappeared in FM 12.

My question is does this still exist? Or was this time-saving bon mot
discarded?

Help tips for structured Framemaker?

2014-08-15 Thread Theresa de Valence
Thanks to all for the pointers to building my own EDD using the manual
Developing Structured Applications (Structure_Dev_Guide.pdf) from Adobe.

Where can I go and find out more about what the structured
elements/attributes mean?

I've had no success with Adobe.com or the Framemaker 12 help pdf.

Specifically at the moment, I'm trying to find out how Frame decides
when and how to apply FirstIndentRelative i.e. relative to what? In
following the instructions, it seems to me all I did was input a value
for a Paragraph Indent, but I have not told Frame any rules about WHEN
to apply this command.

For those who don't have this exercise fresh in their memory ;-) there
has been an Indent (0.3) added in all contexts to the Section element.
The Title element has a (-0.3) FirstIndentRelative.

Is there some place where exists a list of elements attributes which
discusses what each means?

Thanks,
Theresa

RE: Help tips for structured Framemaker?

Hi Theresa,

There should be information in either the Structured Application Developers
Guide or the Structured Application Developers Reference. HOWEVER, because
you are first starting out, I would shy away from applying formatting via
the EDD. Instead, just specify the paragraph format you want for each of
your elements. Since you probably already have an unstructured template,
this makes it easier to have the new structured template use the formats you
are familiar with.

Hi Rebecca

You could save the edited structapps.fm file in a temporary folder, for
example C:\temp or on your desktop. Then, you can copy that file to the
FrameMaker installation folder, for example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker11\Structure

Re: Structured Framemaker

2014-07-15 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Rebecca,

you have to tell FrameMaker to work with a structapps.fm in a location
different than the program folder.
The necessary command is in the maker.ini -- which itself is also in
the FM folder, unfortunately.

But you can overwrite this general maker.ini with commands in your own
maker.ini-file. FrameMaker uses a second file with your personal
settings which is placed here:

C:Users*Your User-Name*AppDataRoamingAdobeFrameMaker11

Put in your user name (or login name) and find the folder on your
harddrive. Probably the user section is on drive c: (it could be on any
other accessible drive).

Now, in this maker.ini there should already be a section [Directories].
If not, copy this section header with the square brackets into the file,
just before another section starts.

Add the following command:
StructureDir=*Your Directory*

*Your Directory* can be anywhere on your harddrive where you have the
right to change files.

First, you also have to put a copy of a structapps.fm file into this
directory, otherwise FM still refers to the default path.

Best regards - Tino H. Haida, Berlin

2014-06-22 Thread Alan Houser

Hi Pankaj,

I un-installed and re-installed .NET Framework, and now FrameMaker 11
and 12 start successfully in structured mode. Thank you for correctly
diagnosing the problem!

I had not made any (known) changes to my system before the failure. I
suspect a Microsoft auto-update corrupted my .NET Framework.

Thanks again!

Hi All,

Windows 7 running on MacOS/Parallels; FM 11 and 12 fully patched.

I'm getting immediate failure of structured Framemaker 11 and 12 on
startup. (Internal Error ... FrameMaker has detected a serious
problem and must quit).

The apps start fine in unstructured mode.

I've tried:
- Removing the user-specific ini files
($HOME/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/FrameMaker)

- Disable all third-party plugins
- Disable LoadStartupScripts setting in maker.ini

This happened suddenly; I don't know what might have triggered it.

Any ideas?

Wow .. Alan .. that's a good one. If this was April 1, I'd think you
were joking.

I can't imagine what would affect both FM11 and FM12 simultaneously.
FM10 is OK? Are these part of a Tech Com Suite or standalone programs?
To me that indicates that the problem lies in some shared resource of
some kind. I know there is some sharing of resources .. but have no idea
what they are. I assume you've rebooted the VM?

Maybe Creative Cloud has gone haywire (naw), and attacked some FM resources?

I have a feeling that you'll need to push this to Adobe .. someone on
the FM dev team might have some ideas.

I hate to say it but you may need to reinstall.

Structured FrameMaker 11 Console Font Error Message Displays when postscripting and creating PDFs

2014-03-26 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
In my office we are using Structured FrameMaker 11 in a Windows 7 environment.

A co-worker is encountering an error message when creating postscript files
from Structured FrameMaker 11 files to send to the printer. The FrameMaker
console displays the following message:
The Times Font is not available.
It will be replaced by Times New Roman.

This error message does not display when the FrameMaker template is opened, or
when the xml file that is imported into the FrameMaker template is imported.

I created a MIF file of the FM11 template and neither Times or Times New Roman
is included in the template. The problem seems to occur when postscripts or
PDFs are created. I noticed the error message displaying on my computer when I
created a PDF with registration marks. When I viewed the pdf there is file
information that appears at the top of the PDf near the registration marks that
includes the file name, date, and time. This information appears as Times New
Roman. When the co-worker created a PDf without using registration marks, the
font error message still displayed.

I added the following line of code to my maker.ini file:
Times, *, *, *=Times New Roman, *, *, *
and this appears to have eliminated the font error message from displaying.

I'd like to determine where this Times font or the reference to times exists so
that I can eliminate it altogether. Times does not appear to be in the
FrameMaker templates, the EDD, or the read/write Rules.

Is there a systems file that FM11 launches when creating postscripts and PDFs
that might contain code that references Times instead of Times New Roman?
Any help with resolving this will be appreciated.

Structured FrameMaker 11 Windows 7 Font Issues

2013-10-31 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
In my office we are upgrading from Structured FrameMaker 8 in a Windows XP
environment to Structured FrameMaker 11 in a Windows 7 environment. I am
currently performance testing the tasks that I need to perform. Part of the
tasks involve importing XML feeds into Structured FrameMaker 11 using an
automated process. After the XML has been imported, it is fully formatted in
FrameMaker. I am noticing that most of the xml imports are throwing a font
issue message. Refer to the attachment image named "font_issue_message" for an
example of this message. Please note that I during this testing period, we
upgraded two font families that are used:
Imago Book
Bembo

These were upgraded to:
Imago BQ
Bembo STD

This upgrade involved reinstalling the fonts on the test computer. This is when
I started to notice these font related error messages.

I updated the FrameMaker templates and the EDD with the new fonts. The attached
image named "font_issue_message" displays an font issue message that I am
receiving. The font Bembo is the old font that has been replaced by Bembo STD.
I'm also noticing Times is displaying in the error message. When the new fonts
were installed this appears to have been replaced with Times New Roman.

I'm also encountering a FrameMaker console message with one set of xml feeds
that are imported into a specific template. Please refer to the attached text
file named "FrameMaker_Console_xml_importing_error_message". This is occurring
because there are some xml tags that need to be unwrapped via the Read/Write
Rules before being imported into the FrameMaker template. I think that this is
why this error message is occurring. I was able to fix this in other FrameMaker
templates by removing the unwrapping command in the Read/Write Rules. In order
to maintain the structure for this template I need to maintain this unwrapping
feature in this template. When I validate the imported FrameMaker file using
the FrameMaker validation tool, these FrameMaker files are valid and are
formatted correctly. The problem is when I create pdfs, the font Imago BQ Bold
is not embedding in the pdf. It is being substituted with Imago BQ BoldItalic.
I have attached a screen capture named "Imago BQ Bold not embedding" of the
Adobe Acrobat Pro Document Properties/Fonts box that displays the embedded
fonts for the problem pdfs. This font embedding issue is not occurring with the
other FrameMaker files that use other templates.

I ran a test in which I eliminated the xml code that was causing the FrameMaker
console error message. When I imported the xml feed into the FrameMaker 11
template, the imported xml feed did not throw an error message. I generated a
pdf for this FrameMaker file and the pdf is still substituting Imago BQ Bold
with Imago BQ BoldItalic and is not embedding Imago BQ Bold font into the pdf,
so I do not think that there is a correlation between the FrameMaker console
error message that I am getting and the issue concerning the PDF font
substitution issue.

The version of Adobe Acrobat that I am using is Adobe Acrobat X Pro.

Any help that you can provide to me will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Brenda George

FW: Structured FrameMaker 11 Windows 7 Font Issues

2013-10-31 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
I have additional information concerning the pdf issue with Imago BQ Bold not
embedding in the PDF and being substituted with Imago BQ BoldItalic. After I
generate the pdf, there is a Frame console message displaying that indicates:
Two or more font files with the same name 'UniversLTStd Regular Light Condensed
(C:\windows\Fonts\UniversLTStd-LightCn.otf) are installed. Only the first font
file will be used"

I have attached a screen capture of the message.

I have an update concerning the font issue message that I am receiving when I
am importing xml feeds into FM11. I opened the Read/Write file and received a
message that the fonts need updated. The fonts that were being applied to the
text in the Read/Write files were old fonts that needed to be updated. I
updated these fonts, saved and then exited frameMaker, then reopened it. I then
began reimporting the xml feeds. I am not noticing any font issue messages
anymore, so I appear to have resolved the issue.

I am still having issues with the Imago BQ Bold font not embedding in the PDF
and being substituted with Imago BQ BoldItalic font.

Structured FrameMaker Developer's Guide for FM 11?

2013-10-17 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Does anyone know if there's an updated version of the Structured FrameMaker
Developer's Guide or reference guide available somewhere that goes beyond FM9?
The FrameMaker 11 help mentions: For more information, see the online manual,
Developing Structured Applications with Adobe FrameMaker on the Adobe
website,www.adobe.com/go/lr_FrameMaker_support_en. But that only shows the home

There may be not that many changes, but it doesn't feel very professional to

Any other resources available?

Structured FrameMaker Developer's Guide for FM 11?

2013-10-17 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Does anyone know if there's an updated version of the Structured FrameMaker
Developer's Guide or reference guide available somewhere that goes beyond FM9?
The FrameMaker 11 help mentions: For more information, see the online manual,
Developing Structured Applications with Adobe FrameMaker on the Adobe
website,www.adobe.com/go/lr_FrameMaker_support_en. But that only shows the home
page for help.

There may be not that many changes, but it doesn't feel very professional to
point my client to the FM9 manuals.

Any other resources available?

Thanks,

Vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,

Wim Hooghwinkel

According to the FM 11 Help, "For more information, see the /Structured
FrameMaker Developer's Guide/, located in the Documents folder."

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WSD7FBA378-86FB-49ad-82EA-CCCFF5CC9524.html

Mind you, the FM 10 Help says the same thing, and there ain't no such
Guide in /my/ Documents folder or anywhere else on my hard drives...

As far as I know .. that's the latest.

It would be great if Adobe had all of the documentation in the same
place so you could really know, but it's spread out over a number of
locations on their website. :o

Structured FrameMaker Developer's Guide for FM 11?

2013-10-17 Thread Robert Lauriston
What Structured FrameMaker documentation Adobe has created is
scattered in various places, but there are also gaping holes.

The FM11 help says "see the online manual, Developing Structured
Applications with Adobe FrameMaker 9," so I think that's an indication
that they have not updated it.

RE: Structured FrameMaker 11 Error Console

2013-10-14 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
I have attached a screen capture of the top one of the XML files that I import.
When you mention the content model specified at the top of the file are you
referring to the DocType? There is a large set of Doctypes that I need to add
to the FrameMaker 11 structured applications file. I tried adding one of these
and then importing the xml file that corresponds to it. I am still getting the
error messages in the console and if I format, save, and then reopen the
FrameMaker 11 file that I imported, I am losing the formatting, so the problem
still exists.

If you open the XML file in a text editor, what's the content model specified
at the top of the XML file? Alternately, you can open the XML in Fm8 and use
the Set Structured Application File command to see what structapp needs to be
added to the Fm11 structapps file.

That application needs to be set up in Fm11, and you need to ensure that it is
valid. There may be minor tweaks to the structapp needed for use in Fm11.

Hi Brenda,

Either your XML doesn't conform to your internally automated process, or you
don't have a working Structured Application for your XML model.

As Rick said, the line numbers referring to the XML file will give an
indication of what's gone awry. At that point, you need to either modify the
XML to fit the StructApp, or modify the StructApp to fit the XML.

Structured FrameMaker 11 Error Console

2013-10-11 Thread Matt Sullivan
If you open the XML file in a text editor, what's the content model specified
at the top of the XML file? Alternately, you can open the XML in Fm8 and use
the Set Structured Application File command to see what structapp needs to be
added to the Fm11 structapps file.

That application needs to be set up in Fm11, and you need to ensure that it is
valid. There may be minor tweaks to the structapp needed for use in Fm11.

Structured FrameMaker 11 Error Console

2013-10-10 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
I am performing testing in a Windows 7 environment with Structured FrameMaker
11.

I am using an internally automated process that imports an xml feed into a
FrameMaker template and produces a formatted FrameMaker document. The
FrameMaker 11 error console window that is displaying contains a long list of
errors. This is my first time working with FrameMaker 11 and this error
console window. I have attached a screen capture of the error console with the
line numbering feature activated in the FrameMaker document.

I'm noticing that the error console window indicates the line number where an
error is occurring. I'm assuming that these line numbers correspond with the
line numbers that can be made visible in the FrameMaker document by choosing
the line numbering feature from the FrameMaker menu bar. Is this correct?

The error messages regard a file named PPM_MM_GOVT_SHEET.fm.CD7. Is

Structured FrameMaker consultant

2013-08-25 Thread Kevin Farwell

Hello,

I'm looking for someone to provide occasional help with structured
FrameMaker projects. The work is spotty, but when a project comes in,
it must be executed quickly. This is localization work, which
explains the spottiness of the work and the attention it demands.

The broad details:

Living in the the Denver, CO area would be nice, but not necessary.

Language skills would be helpful, but not necessary.

The ability to stay cool in the face of unusual task requirements is necessary.

This is mostly a consulting role, but every once in a while
formatting is required.

Training staff members or clients might be required.

That's about it. Please respond off list to get further details.

Kevin

Job Opening in Boston - Part Time or Contract - structured Framemaker

2012-03-29 Thread Michelle DiPoala
Hello everyone!

My name is Michelle DiPoala, I'm a Director at EditShare (www.editshare.com)
and we are seeking a Boston-area based contractor or part-time Technical Writer

EditShare is a small company with a worldwide customer base. We are a

are installed in TV stations, networks and post-production houses in every
industry from sports to universities. If you know any video editors working in

video suite by now. EditShare was the first (and only!) non-Avid solution to
offer Avid Project sharing, and the first storage solution to support 10
Gigabit Ethernet, the first to offer true Project Sharing for Apple Final Cut

can install in a newsvan and take on the road.

It's a very exciting time to join up with us, we have nearly doubled our staff
in the last year and are poised for some very big things. Please check out our

Structured FrameMaker 8: Table Design Issues

2012-02-22 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
I am working in Structured FrameMaker 8 with FrameMaker templates that embeds
into a table a 2 pt vertical line that separates 2 columns of data when an xml
file is imported into the template. These templates were created by another
person, and I am trying to embed this vertical line in another template and
can't figure out how to do it.

I noticed that the following xml markup - rule=yes - needs to be included in
order for the vertical line to appear in the table. The markup looks like this:
columnhead rule=yes colspan=2

If I remove the rule=yes from the markup, the line does not appear in the
FrameMaker file that is built from the imported xml file.

What do I need to do so that this vertical line appears in the table flowed
into the template that I have created?

MstrPg-Use question using RefPg-Table in Structured FrameMaker - 7.2

Dual 80G hard Drives w/one 1T Western Digital (for backup)
DSL for data communications (sure beats USPS, FedEx 'n UPS)
Win OpSys
XP Pro - Serv Pk 3 Fully patched
FrameMaker
7.2 - Fully Patched

My tables have a Table "columns" attribute that (with a Reference-Page
table) will control a table-specified MasterPage based on column quantity.

My tables have column-quantities from 3-6 and a 2nd group from 10-14.
The 3-6 col. group needs to be on 2-col pages and the 10-14 group on a 1-col
(full) page
I do have 4-different Masters . . . named . . . 2cRT, 2cLft, 1cRt and 1cLft
which do quite well when applied manually, a one or a few pages at a time.
The Section pg count varies from 30pp - 250pp with 0-2 images on full-width
pages and 1-6 images on 2-col pages.
The Section usually begins in full width (mode) and will alternate 1-col to
2-col three to twelve times per Section.

You can see . . . they can get quite busy and . . . what I want is . . .
for the Table-Columns attribute to control pagination MasterPgs upon the
input of the SGML-data file.

Two questions . . .
1. Is this RefPg "Element-Attribute" Table>MasterPg a real, working,
solution?
2. Where can I find written instruct's that offers a "great"
instructional view of How it works and How to make it work?
3. In the "columns" attribute value is the column-count(TEXTnumber) . .
. In the RefPg Table - in the attribute value column . . . Can I enter <8
and cause the 2-col. Master to be used and . . . enter >8 to cause the
full/p-1-col Master to be used???
4. or do I need to spec each col. quantity separately???

Thanks for reading this and double Thanks for answering!

Scaling images in Structured FrameMaker

2011-08-16 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
I need to modify a Structured FrameMaker template that displays the photos and
professional information for a list of managers. The image for the first
manager who appears under the subhead for each department is automatically
scaling up 150% when the xml file is imported into the FrameMaker template. The
remaining manager's images are importing at 100%.

I need to scale this first manager's image down on import to 100% so that this
first manager's photo is the same size as the other managers that appear in
that department.

The template is pulling the manager's photo (a .tif file) from a shared server.
I checked the dimensions for the image on the server, and it is the same size
as the other manager images.

I have checked the xsl file, the EDD, and the FrameMaker Rules file, and can't
locate the code that I need to modify in order to fix this.

Is there a setting in the FrameMaker template that I need to modify? How do I
adjust the scaling for these images so that they import to the correct size?

RE: Scaling images in Structured FrameMaker

2011-08-16 Thread Steve Pawlowskis
Not sure if this is useful but since you haven't gotten any other replies...

Do both images have the same resolution (dpi)?

I import images by reference into Frame in a document that is created from a
.mif file generated by a database. I still haven't figured out all aspects of
how Frame handles scaling but if I specify a fixed image size and import an
image with the same dimension but a different resolution (dpi) then the scaling
in Frame will be two different values.

locate the code that I need to modify in order to fix this.

Is there a setting in the FrameMaker template that I need to modify? How do I
adjust the scaling for these images so that they import to the correct size?

Scaling images in Structured FrameMaker

2011-08-16 Thread Steve Pawlowskis
Not sure if this is useful but since you haven't gotten any other replies...

Do both images have the same resolution (dpi)?

I import images by reference into Frame in a document that is created from a
.mif file generated by a database. I still haven't figured out all aspects of
how Frame handles scaling but if I specify a fixed image size and import an
image with the same dimension but a different resolution (dpi) then the scaling
in Frame will be two different values.

Subject: Scaling images in Structured FrameMaker

 Hi,

We have a publication as structured FrameMaker 9 files that I thought
I could quite easily publish with TCS 2.0's FrameMaker/Robohelp/Air
integration. However, in the meantime I've been told  that Robohelp is
only able to take into account any formatting styles defined in
FrameMaker but not the actual element contexts. Is that true? Could
 this possibly change with 2.5?

CGM images from structured FrameMaker

2010-11-18 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello Framers,

When I save content from Structured FrameMaker, I get CGM files from the
images because there are FrameMaker objects in some of the anchored frames.
I have a couple of questions regarding this:

1) Can I tell FrameMaker to use a different file type instead of CGM? If so,
how?

2) When FrameMaker has to create CGM files, it seems to do it for all of the
imported graphics, even those with no callouts, etc. Is this how it is
supposed to work? Is there a way to have imported graphics with no
additional items in the anchored frames pass through without converting them
to CGM?

Thanks in advance.

Re: CGM images from structured FrameMaker

2010-11-18 Thread Fred Wersan

Hi Rick,

I don't think I have exact answers for your questions, but I'll share my
experience with CGM exports. I looked into this in the context of experimenting
with round tripping of files from frame to XML and back. Firstly, the CGM
images are lousy - far inferior to the original graphics or jpg or png. So
there was no good way to round trip frame graphics without losing quality.
However, I found that imported graphics - png or jpg, were referenced in the
XML, so that if I round tripped and the original source graphics were still in
their original location, I ended up with decent graphics. My solution for the
frame graphics that I wanted was to take a screen capture of them and use that
instead. Not as good as real frame graphics, but way better than the CGM.

RE: CGM images from structured FrameMaker

2010-11-18 Thread Herbert Leusink
Hi Rick,

You can try to add the following to the read/write rules file of your
structured application:

element graphic
{   is fm graphic element;
writer anchored frame export to file $(entity).mif as MIF;
}

It will export the graphics that have callouts as MIF. Linked graphics remain
unchanged, embedded graphics will also be exported as MIF.

Hope this helps...

CGM images from structured FrameMaker

CGM images from structured FrameMaker

2010-11-18 Thread Herbert Leusink
Hi Rick,

You can try to add the following to the read/write rules file of your
structured application:

element "graphic"
{   is fm graphic element;
writer anchored frame export to file "$(entity).mif" as "MIF";
}

It will export the graphics that have callouts as MIF. Linked graphics remain
unchanged, embedded graphics will also be exported as MIF.

Hope this helps...

RE: Converting HTML to structured FrameMaker

2010-06-18 Thread LW White

Hi Roger,

The Dita Open Toolkit includes a plugin, h2d, that converts HTML to DITA. As
you suspect, the cleaner and more pristine the HTML is, the smoother the
conversion. I have converted HTML authored in both RoboHelp and Flare to DITA
and it's not a painless process as both products introduce a lot of proprietary
namespaces and...uh, creative tagging to their HTML. In those cases, I have had
better luck writing a batch find/replace file tailored to the flavor of HTML I
am working with. It takes some time up front and the results still need
cleaning up, but I believe the net is a time savings and it is a process not
limited to Frame.

Best,
Leigh

Hello All

We have a legacy Help system, authored in Robohelp, so all the original content
is HTML. We would like to import the HTML into FrameMaker, preferably
structured, preferably DITA. There are about 300 pages involved.

I'm wondering if one route would be HTML XHTML, and then some kind of a
transform to DITA XML. However, I'm not optimistic about consistency of tagging
in the HTML.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Setting PDF Custom Properties from Structured FrameMaker

2010-06-03 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Fellow Framers,

My setup is TCS1 on Windows XP (Frame 8.0, structured, with Adobe 9.0 Pro
Extended). I need to set up custom properties in the PDF (Document Properties
Custom Tab). I want to create these properties as attributes in the Frame book
file so that I can automatically write them to the PDF.

I know how to set up Frame's File Info dialog, which writes to the PDF Document
Properties Description tab, but I must also have additional metadata on the
Document Properties Custom Tab.

Anyone out there doing something like this today? Ideas on how I can get this
to work? All ideas and input are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes, and with FrameScript, you can automate the process of getting the
correct values from the document's structure and creating the PostScript
text frame. You can have the script run automatically whenever you save the

2010-04-27 Thread Fred Wersan
If your only reason for considering structured FrameMaker is because you
want some kind of XML solution, then read up about XML. However, there
are benefits to using a structured authoring environment that have
nothing to do with converting to XML. They involve controlling the
quality and consistency of the documents you product, how you re-use
content within the FrameMaker environment, and other good stuff. I'm a
lone writer too and I think it's worth it.

I'm just beginning the process of looking at what a (more) structured

budget is a big issue and I have Frame 9, Structured Frame seemed a good place
to start.

I read Sarah O'Keefe's piece XML and Lone Writers this morning and my
immediate response to it was that XML wouldn't suit the constraints under which
I work and the current output I am required to produce.

However, I can see us evolving in that direction as Management is starting to
understand the whole reuse concept through my application of Conditional Text.
Because Conditional Text is only going to take us so far in constructing the
documents they are beginning to envision, I may be able to make a good case for
XML/Structured Frame in order to create all the different things they have
suddenly decided would be a good idea.

However, as my plate is extremely full for the next 5 months (2 software
updates planned for 4 hardware platforms, introduction of a 5th hardware
platform, 2 Service Manuals to update and a 3rd Service Manual to create from
scratch), nothing will get done in a hurry.

What about taking this one step back? I'm the lone writer in my organization
and any innovations have to be led by me with a damn good case for ROI, e.g.,
moving from Word to FrameMaker was a 2 year process (budget is the main
reason I have to over-prove my case).
