Re: [Audyssey] using the deck gun with LW

2009-03-26 Thread Charles Rivard
The info on whether you are long, which means that your barrel is too high,
or short, which means that your barrel is too low, is constantly changing if
you or the enemy is moving. The same goes for if the target is to your
left, p, or to your right, s. P is for port, and S is for starboard. Use
the left or right arrows to move your gun left or right, and the up or down
arrows to raise or lower the gun as needed. These will be in small
movements. For larger movements for quick aiming, use the control key along
with those arrow keys. Just like when using torpedoes, fire at the highest
beep. With the deck gun, keep adjusting your aim and keep firing, as you do
have unlimited ammunition.

Hi all, I am looking for a bit of help with the deck gun of my sub.
Don't quite get the hang of lining it up right in order to hit a target.
How do you get it precisely lined up and not to give the info on long or

As I said Tom, this probably will just end up being a "suck it and see"
type of question.

currently my opinion is that the mouse is a more specialized form of
control and useable for specific sorts of in game challenges,
precise targiting or use as a throtle. If people would prefer to use a
mouse in a space invaders game, fair enough if the option is there.

Currently though, I'm less keen on the mouse being simply a substitute
control method. Just as the mouse requires different sorts of physical
action, it should be suted to those sorts of actions.

if the mouse is used in a game, i'd prefer it to be used with a distinct
and definite use in mind specific to the control method of a mouse,
such as that seen in the gestures game, or planned in Che's fighting
game. It just strikes me using the mouse to move in streight lines in a
game with basic controls and targiting is something of overkill.

Just my opinion though, and if a game is developed with mouse support I'm
always ready to give it a try, I'd just prefer it personally if
mouse support was used to it's fullest extent in games, not merely
becoming a substitute for keyboards.

Re: [Audyssey] The fun little mouse, was:: MOTA Mouse Support

2009-03-26 Thread Che
Yah, I agree with Dark here, the mouse shouldn't be used just as a
replacement for keys only. The unique abilities of the mouse should be
utilized as much as possible to take advantage of its possibilities,
something that is going to take thinking outside the box.
I think Thomas mentioned using the mous buttons to jump, but why not have
the left button fire the weapon, scroll wheel change inventory, and right
button holster and unholster weapon? Then a modifier key could be used for
jumping in conjunction with the mouse.
Just a suggestion, but there are all kinds of possibilities that would
attract the gamer to use the mouse if it were more than a simple replacement
for pressing keys.

Hi.
It will be an option. As of right now you have to go in the menu and enable
mouse support to use it, and then the keyboard still works. I haven't proven
myself do to the lack of support for mice at the moment because of the problems
Thomas mentioned but it's definitely going to be an option. With my gamepad I
can still, and have to still push a few buttons on the keyboard to do things in
addition to the functionality my gamepad provides.

Sorry for the double post. One thing that's cool about console classix
is
that you can send in your cartridges if they don't have a game, and
they'll
actually do a full rom rip and post it up there. You probably won't get
your

Two topics here.
First, I haven't had time, but if someone could try it and give us a

if the site or any games on it are accessible, remember the Sega

Well, Sega has just launched a free site where you can play the old

I found my old Sega Megadrive. I'd love to get some more games for

did
anyone of you guys have them and what games were accessible and did

you

how

Boxing,
and WWF Arcade Game. Anyone remember the commentators and bringing

Re: [Audyssey] The fun little mouse, was:: MOTA Mouse Support

2009-03-26 Thread dark
As I said Tom, this probably will just end up being a "suck it and see" type
of question.

currently my opinion is that the mouse is a more specialized form of control
and useable for specific sorts of in game challenges, precise targiting
or use as a throtle. If people would prefer to use a mouse in a space
invaders game, fair enough if the option is there.

Currently though, I'm less keen on the mouse being simply a substitute
control method. Just as the mouse requires different sorts of physical
action, it should be suted to those sorts of actions.

if the mouse is used in a game, i'd prefer it to be used with a distinct and
definite use in mind specific to the control method of a mouse, such as
that seen in the gestures game, or planned in Che's fighting game. It just
strikes me using the mouse to move in streight lines in a game with basic
controls and targiting is something of overkill.

Just my opinion though, and if a game is developed with mouse support I'm
always ready to give it a try, I'd just prefer it personally if mouse
support was used to it's fullest extent in games, not merely becoming a
substitute for keyboards.

Hi Dark,
I think that is lack of experience talking more than anything else. As I
stated earlier I do have partial mouse support going and what I have so
far is promising. I certainly understand if people would rather use a
keyboard, joystick, etc as the game supports those already.
As far as the point that the mouse doesn't add anything to the game that's
where I personally disagree. When testing using the mouse I have found my
control over Angela much smoother, much more responsive, and more relaxing
than with say a keyboard. If an enemy attacks me a quick pull to the left
or right will often cause me to step out of the way of an attack much
faster than if I were doing the same action on a keyboard. There are
advantages here even if you don't immediately see the need for them.
While I am on the subject w seam to be comparing mouse support to
mainstream games. While it is true most sighted mainstream games have
keyboard and joystick support it never hurts to add something new to the
mix. A new or different experience for the end gamer.

Mota's challenge is much more about where you go, and how you time

Of course, sinse I grew up, and indeed stil do, play graphical side

hi tohmas
if built into the game as additional option, I am all for it. I just would
not be happy with a game that did not support keyboard as an option.

here on my pc I don't even have a mouse hooked up but I do own one. grin
i once tried a game on the net with mouse support and somehow always managed
to lose track of where it (cursor) was and ran out of space on the desk here
lol.
but i understand what you are saying. since mota is not a three dimensional
game controlling with a mouse would not be so hard I assume. so make it an
option in the final game and I promise to try this :)

Hi Chrissy,
It may be that many sighted games use it for aiming and shooting, but I
can definitely say here that the mouse is a good input device for
navigating around. In fact, it is not navigation that is the problem here
with the mouse. I have basic navigation support in the game, that is
disabled in the public beta, which works quite well. When it works you get
a lot more precise and responsive results from the mouse. That's why I am
interested in supporting it as well as a triditional keyboard.
As far as being confused by the mouse I'm not really certain what you mean
by that. In a game like Mysteries of the Ancients the mouse motion is very
simple/straight forward. When you want to walk left drag the mouse left,
drag the mouse right to walk right, push foward to climb, and pull back to
decend. Use a left/right button to jump or run at the same time of moving
in that direction and it should do it. However, it is the buttons that are
giving me grief. If I can fix that issue I think most people would agree,
once they tried it, that it would be a very good input alternative to the
keyboard.

Re: [Audyssey] The fun little mouse, was:: MOTA Mouse Support

2009-03-26 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Well, the issue isn't about weather a certain game or type of game
requires a mouse but the option or availability to use the mouse as a
secondary input device.
Take a game like Troopenum. It certainly does not need a mouse to play.
Most would agree joystick and keyboard input is fine. Still if the mouse
was available as an input device it would add something extra to the
experience. A player could simply drag the mouse left/right to target
the enemy ships and press the left button to fire. The right button
could toggle through your weapons. A handy, simple, and responsive
interface wrapped up in one.
My point is that games do not have to be difficult to get something out
of having a mouse as an input device. Plus these days just about
everyone has a mouse where joysticks is an added expense. So it may save
a few bucks if the user is ok with the mouse and doesn't want to pay for
a joystick up front.

dark wrote:
There are some pretty nifty games I've heard of which use the mouse or
other relative in put devices to control the character.

take for example the old spindizy games on the amigar, which used either
a mouse or a trackball to tilt the level around and make a pinball fall
into holes.

I've also heard of several scrolling shooters flying spaceships which
use the mouse as a smoother and more streamline control method for the
main ship.

that being said though, imho a platform game where the concentration is
on moving and climing in streight lines doesn't require a mouse
particularly.

As I said though, as a lover of joysticks, and reluctantly a keyboard,
I'm probably heavily biased on this point.

pull to the left or right will often cause me to step out of the way of
an attack much faster than if I were doing the same action on a
keyboard. There are advantages here even if you don't immediately see
the need for them.
While I am on the subject w seam to be comparing mouse support to
mainstream games. While it is true most sighted mainstream games have
keyboard and joystick support it never hurts to add something new to the
mix. A new or different experience for the end gamer.

Hi Anthony,
DirectX is a very important set of multimedia components developed by
Microsoft for Windows games. It handles various
aspects of both accessible and mainstream games such as handling
joysticks, keyboard input, mouse input, audio, 3d graphics, you name it.
It is a necessity if you are going to be playing games on the Windows

Re: [Audyssey] directx march

2009-03-26 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Shaun,
If you are talking about the new x3d math library that ships with
DirectX (March 2009) it is a very handy library for C++ game developers.
It handles all kinds of 3d calculations with a special emphasis on 3d
graphics of course. The x3d audio component, X3DAudio, has been around
for the last two or three releases, but that has very good 3d audio
supportwhich again a C++ game developer can use. Obviously, sooner or
later these components will be integrated into the XNA Framework for
.NET game developers.
One other update to the March 2009 release is Microsoft has finally
replaced DirectDraw with a new component called Direct2D. It works
similar to Direct3D, but is designed for games' that use 2d graphics.

To trap the mouse, simply reset its coordinates to wherever you want it
locked every cycle. If your form pops up at mid screen with a
resolution of 500, 500 for example, lock it to 500 -500 and you should
be golden, just get the relative change each cycle from that point. I'm
recalling the coordinate system off the top of my head here, but you get
the idea I'm sure.
You will have to play around with capturing its coordinates and
determining how much movement to translate, depending on how often you
ping it but there isn't much to that really , jus throw a multiplier
variable in there that you can adjust while playing until you get it set
to what you want. Like wise, this variable can be adjusted in options to
allow the player to set their own mouse sensitivity in game.
If you aren't using a hard cycle, then just give the mous its own
thread and timer and away you go.

There really isn't much to it once you get it locked down every cycle.
 Later,
che

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Mouse Support

2009-03-26 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Chrissy,
It may be that many sighted games use it for aiming and shooting, but I
can definitely say here that the mouse is a good input device for
navigating around. In fact, it is not navigation that is the problem
here with the mouse. I have basic navigation support in the game, that
is disabled in the public beta, which works quite well. When it works
you get a lot more precise and responsive results from the mouse. That's
why I am interested in supporting it as well as a triditional keyboard.
As far as being confused by the mouse I'm not really certain what you
mean by that. In a game like Mysteries of the Ancients the mouse motion
is very simple/straight forward. When you want to walk left drag the
mouse left, drag the mouse right to walk right, push foward to climb,
and pull back to decend. Use a left/right button to jump or run at the
same time of moving in that direction and it should do it. However, it
is the buttons that are giving me grief. If I can fix that issue I think
most people would agree, once they tried it, that it would be a very
good input alternative to the keyboard.

Smile.

Chrissy wrote:
in regular games for sseing gamers the mouse is never used for moving
your character but more for aimimg and shooting and such. so to me it
would not make a lot of sense to try and navigate with a mouse at all.
most times that mouse stuff confused the heck out of me. but that is
just personal opinion. i like movement with arrow keys, works fine for me.

Re: [Audyssey] The fun little mouse, was:: MOTA Mouse Support

2009-03-26 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi James,
I'm not sure how much general mouse experience you have had, but most
mouse gamers, users, etc don't need a very large area to move the mouse
in. They keep there wrist stationed on there desk and move the mouse to
the left or right. If they reach the end of there mouse matt they pick
it up, move it left/right, set it down, and then continue in the
direction they were moving before. This takes maybe a second to perform.
Having tested this with MOTA it takes a second to get the hang of, but
works fair enough.

James Dietz wrote:

I'm actually curious to find out how Thomas implemented the mouse to
control the character's running. Would I continuously have to move the
mouse to the right? If so I don't think I'd have a large enough desk
to avoid the need to pick it up occasionally. That'd obviously work
better with a trackball, but I'd rather use a keyboard or joystick for
something like character movement if I'd have to continuously move the
mouse in the direction I want to move.

Smile.

Chrissy wrote:
in regular games for sseing gamers the mouse is never used for moving
your character but more for aimimg and shooting and such. so to me it
would not make a lot of sense to try and navigate with a mouse at all.
most times that mouse stuff confused the heck out of me. but that is
just personal opinion. i like movement with arrow keys, works fine for me.

chrissy

Hi,
A game pad is a type of joystick device. They typically have two little
anolog sticks, 10 to 12 buttons, and a positional pov hat. As for
finding them you can buy them just about anywhere. Wal-Mart has one,
Phillips SGC-2909, for around $15.00.

One thing you needd to remember is that for audio games you should turn off
your screen reader before you start them, or chances are you won't hear
anything unless you happen to have a multichannel sound card. And anyway
your screen reader needs to be off or it'll interfere with the game's
keyboard commands. I'd also make sure you have the latest version of DirectX

Although most sighted games use the mouse for aiming, that shouldn't

have used the mouse to play games, given the very few available, but I
can
tell you, we're missing out on a very good input device for the blind,
and

I
really don't understand why the resistance.
Is it just because it is something different that folks haven't done
before? Are folks afraid they can't learn to use it?
What is the thinking out there? I for one hate playing exclusively with
the keyboard, there is just no subtlety of control there, but with the
mouse
you have an entirely new dimension of control if it is programmed right.
For instance, I am still kicking around the idea of doing a mouse driven
golf game. Imagine how cool it would be to have control of your golf
club

speed depending on how fast you moved the mouse. It would feel a lot more
like actually playing golf instead of trying to hit a moving target with
a

dart, as is the case with a keyboard setup. No slam meant to Jim's golf
game here, obviously what he has created has been accepted and played by
throngs of accessible gamers and my hats off to him for providing it for
free, and coming up with an interface that works very well.
But my point is, we're limiting ourselves for no good reason here, and I
wish someone would explain to me why it is taking so long to get
accessible
gamers to accept the mouse as a primary input device.
I'm not trying to come down on anyones opinions here, but when I see
folks
not taking advantage of something that is capable of improving things on
any
level, I just have to scratch my head and wonder why.
 Thoughts?
Thanks for reading my diatribe here, ehahah,
 Che

actually do a full rom rip and post it up there. You probably won't get
your
cart back but I thought it was a neat feature. Leaves room for full
expansion. Oh, and here's the link:

[Audyssey] experimental games

2009-03-26 Thread Ron Schamerhorn
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone else has recently seemed to have trouble with the
experimental game Leap. I tried to get it going. The intro plays with no
problem and yes I've unloaded Jaws. It tells me to hit the space bar, but
unless I'm supposed to wait awhile it just seems to stop at that point. I
quite liked playing it any suggestions welcome.

Thanks
Ron

[Audyssey] entombed things

2009-03-26 Thread shaun everiss
Hi.
here is my score
If you at all can get grannet or other rock, actually grannet clubs, or large
clubs then you can really do some punnishing.
Still I got fairly mamed by the boss.
Prior to entering the dungeon, spider Threw a Javelin so erratically at the
Smartest Fighter competition that it Disfigured the Duke who was watching from
the stands. spider set out on the 7th of WhisperSpirit in 27 and escaped to the
lower levels 2 months , 8 days later. Score: 502
