well I don't have anyone to play this but full playthroughs and other things

on that note it looks like at some point soon I'm gona be cutting back on

hopefully thats not much.
At 06:12 p.m. 3/04/2010, you wrote:
Man, I really am starting to love this series. Everyone up here in North
America would know it as Yakuza, as would the people over in Europe. This
game's a spinoff, and is based around the legendary Musashi Miyamoto. So, this
game takes out fists, and switches the focuss to swords. I've always loved
this series, for the main story and for the cinematics as well as the actin
and sounds. Kensan is only available in Japan, but I would say it's worth
importing if you have someone around to play with you. There's a great guide
on gamefaqs that can get you through it. Here are two videos I converted and
uploaded.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/vqesee
http://www.sendspace.com/file/egaouo

The first video involves Musashi and a friend, Majima, waiting at a temple for
an army. However, their commander, called Marume-san in the video, shws up and
tells them that they killed an heir of the Tokugawa family. Since you didn't
know, you're stunned. However, you ge told that the army serves that family,
and since you killed the heir, Marume wants revenge and sees it as his duty to
kil you both and Majima. So the fight in the video is between Musashi, Majima
and the rest of the troops plus Marume. Keep in mind that this isn't
technically a beat em up. This is an action rpg, and there's a lot of
exploration aside from just killing and killing. But the action is a big part.

Anyhow, after that fight, Musashi tries to flee but is blocked by a rival,
Koujirou sasaki. Marume calls him kojiro-sama. Kojiro is an old rival of
Musashi's, and recognizes him when Musashi puls two swords at once.
Historically, Musashi is the founder of the two-sword style. The second fight
is a battle tutorial on how to use the style in the game. That's where the
second video starts.

The second vide picks up where you left off. Musashi stabs a trooper in the
chest, and him and Kojiro banter brefly. I don't know that much Japanese, I
was lucky to pick up as much as I did in the first video. Anyhow, Kojirou ad
Musashi duel and separate. Then they clash again. The second brake, Majima
tries to protect Musashi but gets stabbed in the eye. Then they clash one more
time. Musashi breaks away and tells Marue that the two of them will take his
advice and survive. Then he grabs the injured Majima and leaps ff the cliff
edge and rns off.

That's pretty muc hthe two videos. I love the cinematics in this game... and
the duel between Musashi and Kojiro sounds epic. Opinions are always welcome.
Hope that was enough of a commentary to describe what's going on. And sorry
about the typing... my laptop keyboard sucks.

Hi Everyone,
A patch has been released for TDV that corrects an issue where the game would
try to change settings in Control Panel concerning speaker configuration. You
can download it at http://www.bpcprograms.com/programs/patches/. Please keep
the full version of TDV installed when installing this patch. If you find that
sounds are coming out of multiple sound cards (if you have more than one
installed) or if TDV is trying to change your settings to 7.1, please download
this patch.

Hi Thomas,

Yes, thanks, I am aware of what is involved in AI for games. As I said though,
I am not into it as much as other types of game coding. But so there you go,
create and sell a basketball game. Heck once you or someone does the AI for
basketball I bet that it could fairly easily be converted for use for a hockey,
soccer and goalball game.

Hi Jim,
Oh, I guess I didn't really mean easy, but possible might have been a
better word for it. From a design aspect it would be easy. It is
programming it that is complicated/hard as you have to give all of the
player semi-intelligent AI to know when to block, defend, steell the
ball, whatever. To make realistic decisions based on certain
situations in the game.
As far as AI goes it can be a pretty advanced field of study in and of
itself. I've read a few books on the subject, and there is still
stuff I don't understand clearly. However, building a simple AI really
just requires thinking about what possible situations the game
character will face during your game, and creating a list of
conditions with specific responses attached.
For example, in STFC I had to build a realistic combat intelligent
fleet of enemy ships. As a result it would constantly check the status
of the ship, the enemy, and take a certain type of action based on
statistical data. If the Federation ship was weak, and nearly beaten
the enemy ship might not retreat in the hope of making a solid kill.
However, if that ship was heavily damaged and the Federation ship was
still in combat ready status run away and live to fight another day.
Of course, it was a bit more complicated than that, but this is a
simple example of taking one particular combat situation, and then
performing some intelligent action based on the current situation. Of
course, if you want to give certain ships or a commander a more unique
AI then things get much trickier.
However, all and all the basic principle applies to a game like
basketball. You can give each computer driven player an AI with a list
of rules how to play the game in what situation it should pass the
ball, dribble it, try and make a shot, etc. I don't think anyone is
very good at programming AI driven game players like this at first,
but it is something you can learn with practice. Sometimes it just
takes a little experimentation.

Cheers!

Hi Phil,

Yes, the Cavs are Cleveland's best sports team. Ironic then since I am not a
fan and never listen to basketball, soccer or hockey. Give me NASCAR, football
or baseball. And of course those are the games I have created, because I am
into them. Not much fun to create games that one is not into. At least that
is the way that it is for me. I play every game that I have ever created.
That is also why I do not create games where there are puzzles to solve to play
and finish the game. I mean what fun would that be for me to play? Guess that
is pretty selfish of me to only create games that I am into and want to play.
But that's the way that I am.

Hi Charles,

Yes! Definitely! Some of the best brains in the world have worked years and
years on chess engines. That is because a computer is so totally and
completely mindless. All intelligence must be coded into the artificial
intelligence of a game, chess engine or what ever. So that would be like
coding in every thought that you have ever had for playing a game of chess.
And it is the same thing for all coding of artificial intelligence. Of course
allot of games are far less complicated than chess, but still...

2010-04-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
Well, the type of simple AI I described to Jim Kitchen wouldn't really
be appropriate for a chess game. there are far too many factors
involved to make it feasable to write the AI that way. There are
however more complex types of AI out there which could and should be
used in that situation. The only reason I didn't mention them before
is because most of the people out there probably don't have the
background to discuss fuzzy logic and other complex AI systems like
that.
However, even so Chess is a very complex game to play. it is even
harder to program as it requires a lot of strategy and thinking ahead
a few moves. That's why computers are almost written using a straight
forward brute force attack because it is the least complex strategy to
program. A human player can be a lot more cunning, daring, risky, etc
where no computer Chess program ever quite matches human skill and
cunning. It usually has the same motive of operation. If you can
figure out its mode of operation, game plan, you can counter it pretty
easily. Problem is most people don't know enough how computers think
to actually beat the computer at its own game.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] AI - Re: multiple player game

2010-04-04 Thread David Greenwood
In the mid-1990's, IBM developed a chess program call Deep Blue. It beat
the world champion chess player Garry Kasparov in a six game match with two
winds for Deep Blue, one for Garry, and three draws.

There was a bit of a cloud over the incident since Garry accused IBM of
cheating and challenged Deep Blue to a rematch. IBM quickly refused and
dismantled Deep Blue.

Some people feel that this was an admittal of IBM of their cheating, but my
personal feelings are that computers are not nearly as creative and flexible
as humans, and the chess master would probably have beaten Deep Blue handily
if they had met again. IBM had met its goals of creating a chess program
which beat the best human chess player in the world, and it could only
tarnish its victory by having a rematch.

when it is the program's turn to move? On the first move of the game,
there
are a possible 20 moves that can be made, but it very quickly becomes
much,

much more. The code to be written to get a program to play really well

ball, dribble it, try and make a shot, etc. I don't think anyone is
very good at programming AI driven game players like this at first,
but it is something you can learn with practice. Sometimes it just
takes a little experimentation.

Re: [Audyssey] AI - Re: multiple player game

2010-04-04 Thread Charles Rivard
Also, the programmers modified the programming of Deep Blue as the series
progressed. Deep Blue, in my opinion, would not have done as well if it had
been entered into a tournament with several grand masters of the game,
because it was specifically programmed to beat one player. Another grand
master, although he may not have been as good at chess, would played
unexpectedly according to the programming of Deep Blue, and probably would
have won against the program.

In the mid-1990's, IBM developed a chess program call Deep Blue. It beat
the world champion chess player Garry Kasparov in a six game match with
two winds for Deep Blue, one for Garry, and three draws.

There was a bit of a cloud over the incident since Garry accused IBM of
cheating and challenged Deep Blue to a rematch. IBM quickly refused and
dismantled Deep Blue.

Some people feel that this was an admittal of IBM of their cheating, but
my personal feelings are that computers are not nearly as creative and
flexible as humans, and the chess master would probably have beaten Deep
Blue handily if they had met again. IBM had met its goals of creating a
chess program which beat the best human chess player in the world, and it
could only tarnish its victory by having a rematch.

If I follow what you're saying, a chess program would be a real bear to
write from scratch, wouldn't it, given all of the possibilities that come
up
when it is the program's turn to move? On the first move of the game,
there
are a possible 20 moves that can be made, but it very quickly becomes
much,

much more. The code to be written to get a program to play really well
would be enormous, wouldn't it?

Hi Jim,
Oh, I guess I didn't really mean easy, but possible might have been a
better word for it.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] AI - Re: multiple player game

2010-04-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Well, every game is different because the person who wrote it may have
used different logic in designing the AI, but by and large it is as
simple as doing the most logical move for the situation. If it is a
game like Chess and it is worth losing a pon to capture a powerful
piece like a queen you are going to take it. That would be the logical
thing to do. So that is basically how computers work. It factors risks
simply by what seams to be the best choice for the moment. If You can
figure out what the computers best move would be at that current point
in time you can try and factor it into your game plan.
As I said before computer AI generally takes the bruit force method.
they use swarm tactics, go straight for the most powerful pieces on
the board, and tend to go for your throat early on. I remember one
time playing Elite Chess and losing the game in a total of five moves.
It wasn't that the computer was technically smarter than me, but I
didn't see that particular brute force attack coming until I was
basically screwed strategy wise. It had diverted my attention
elsewhere on the board so it could go for my king quick and fast. Now,
however, I have learned that little stunt I take better care to make
sure my king either has legal maneuvering room or is well protected
from a quick kill. You play against a computer AI long enough you
begin to learn several of its dirty tricks.

Cheers!

Hi Charles,
Well, the type of simple AI I described to Jim Kitchen wouldn't really
be appropriate for a chess game. there are far too many factors
involved to make it feasable to write the AI that way. There are
however more complex types of AI out there which could and should be
used in that situation.

Cheers!

Hi David,
I whole heartedly agree. Deep Blue was a computer Chess game designed
specifically for that one player. Given enough time and matches Garry
would have been able to determine the computers main mode of
operation, its unique style of playing, and have defeated it soundly.
Computers are limited to only what they have been programmed to do and
after a while an experienced player will discover what style of
playing it will try and can counter it.

 Cheers!

Hi Jim,
Well, I do pretty much the same thing. All of the games I'm working on
are of some particular interest to me personally. If that wasn't the
case I wouldn't have continued working on them for this long. A
developer has to like what he's creating or there is no motivation to
make a decent game in the first place.

because I am into them. Not much fun to create games that one is not into.
At least that is the way that it is for me. I play every game that I have
ever created. That is also why I do not create games where there are
puzzles to solve to play and finish the game. I mean what fun would that be
for me to play? Guess that is pretty selfish of me to only create games

Hi Jim,
I'm pretty sure it could be. However, like you basketball isn't my
favorite sport. I use to go to my high school basketball games to
cheer my team on, but it never really was that big an interest of
mine. I have always liked wrestling, football, and baseball more. If
I had a choice I'd much rather see a wrestling type game than a
basketball game for the blind. The WWE games for the Playstation are
good, but do require quite a bit of memerising to play effectively. So
I'd like to see a game like it only fully accessible.

[Audyssey] tv manager 2 advice

2010-04-04 Thread dark
Hi.

to everyone who's planning on giving this a try I'll offer some advice.

first, you need a screen reading curser that can emulate mouse actions, so the
dolphin curser for hal, jaws curser or I believe window eyes curser is needed.

To anyone who's played smugglers 4, things should then be familiar interface
wise (and to anyone who hasn't played smugglers 4, try it, it's fun!).

First off, activate blind compatibility mode. The game begins with tutorial
text on the screen, and you'll need to minimize that to get to the blind
compatibility mode button (you need to minimize the tutorial text each time
actually).

Then, on the first screen to choose scenario and such, you have a number of
written choices with next/previous below them and a continue button at the
bottom.

Then, you'll be in the office menue, and can click stuff to open other in game
menues.

You'll need to dragtv programs into the various fields for adds and such, I'm
not sure how this is done in other screen readers, but for hal in virtual
focus, it's right ctrl home to pick up something to drag, right ctrl end to
drop.

As to the game in general, it's a litle like a card game, where you need to buy
movies, and series and select news items to get certain quantities of audience
watching your tv channel, then select adds for that sort of audience, which
then make you more cash.

The compatibility mode isn't finished as yet, but it almost is, so people
should probably give this, along with the two smugglers space adventure
and trade games, a try.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

No problem with traffic about if on this list, --- ask away.

If you are a newby though, you could do much worse than checking out

I'd also recommend you try the game dreamhold by andrew plotkin found at

you can run this with windows frotz, winfrotz (including the winfrotz tts

It's a really great story and adventure, but whats' more is it's probably
the best introduction to If I've seen. there are various ones knocking

Hi Jim,
I'm pretty sure it could be.

On 4/4/10, Jim Kitchen j...@kitchensinc.net wrote:

Hi Thomas,

Yes, thanks, I am aware of what is involved in AI for games. As I said
though, I am not into it as much as other types of game coding. But so
there you go, create and sell a basketball game. Heck once you or
someone

does the AI for basketball I bet that it could fairly easily be converted
for use for a hockey, soccer and goalball game.

Re: [Audyssey] need help

2010-04-04 Thread dark

first, which version of the game are you running?

Before it was fixed so that items and corpses disappeared from previous
floors, there was a great deal of slowdown indeed, i very much recommend
grabbing both the latest copy of the eentombed installer and update patch.
The latest version is 1.01, (the installer installs 1.0, and the patch
upgrades to 01).

Check the news items of www.audiogames.net for the links to download both.

Re: [Audyssey] Any interactive fiction fans out there?

2010-04-04 Thread dark
Hmmm, I can't recall azteca specifically, but remember how well you c an
interact with game elements depends very much on how much of a brain the
creator had.

I spent ages trying to get through the fireplace in the pentory prequal, ---
north, (sinse it was in the north wall), enter fire place you can't enter
that when it turned out I had to type in, for the love of pete!

I don't remember any such issue with azteca, but I will confess this
business with the prequal, and the fact that I can make no headway
whatsoever with the demo of the first game rather put me off malinch's
stuff.

As with regular fiction though, this just depends upon who wrote the game,
and there is a lot more interactive fiction available than just malinches'
stuff, check those links I sent in the previous message for starters,
then have a look at http://www.wurb.com/if/ and search for something with
good reviews that looks interesting.

personally, I'd recommend stuff by emily short, paul obrian and aAndrew
plotkin, but again this depends upon my personal preference for weerd
exploritory fantasy stuff.

Re: [Audyssey] Any interactive fiction fans out there?

2010-04-04 Thread dark

I've run win frotz with Hal, win frotz tts, and win tads.

personally, I've always gone on what games I liked, rather than the
interpreter.

Thus my favourite games have been worlds apart and bable which were tads,
dreamhold, the djini chronicles, pythos mask, lash and wearing the claw
which were zcode, and then the earth and sky series which started in zcode,
then moved into glulks.

You can find them all by searching baffs' guide.

As I said, I completed azteca, but thought it was okay, then started the
pentori series on the basis that malinches' very aggressive promotional
style (which actually i find to be rather irritating), and the fact that
their a commercial company must have some basis in fact, but after getting
stuck in the fireplace in the first pentori prequal (I had to actually
E-mail malinch about that one), then getting practically nowhwere with the
next pentori game, well lets just say i sort of lost interest.

Not sure.

Try heading back to town and selling stuff off regularly, maybe it's that
your inventory is too large (I know jason said he was going to implement
inventory limits, maybe he hasn't yet).

personally, I head back to town and sell stuff every floor, maybe this
is why I haven't had this issue sinse Jason fixed the corpse trouble.

Can you tell me again what that book was?
or can anyone else on this list recommend a good beginner AI book to start

 Hi everyone:

I am playing a game called azteca from the interactive fiction book which
was one of the free one's and I am stuck.

Hope someone can help me with it. I am in the jaguar room and see on the
floor scuff marks. When I examine the scuff marks I see it say wax marks
 go
to the westward wall and there are stones which are not aligned or
 something
like that. I know that I need to do something to open or get that wall
 open
but cannot figure what to do.

If anyone could help me figure out what to try I would sure be
 appreciative.

Hi mike.

No problem with traffic about if on this list, --- ask away.

If you are a newby though, you could do much worse than checking out
http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/step2.html which have a great
beginners'
guide.

I'd also recommend you try the game dreamhold by andrew plotkin found at
http://ifarchive.heanet.ie/if-archive/games/zcode/dreamhold.z8

you can run this with windows frotz, winfrotz (including the winfrotz tts
version which outputs directly to sapi), or anything which plays z code
game

files.

It's a really great story and adventure, but whats' more is it's probably
the best introduction to If I've seen. there are various ones knocking
about, but for a hands on in game intro going through how to give
commands,
and what puzles are, dreamhold is deffinately my favourite (not the least
because it's an incredibly interesting game and story in it's own right).

Hi Dark,
In regards to an earlier post of yours, I know what you mean. I was playing
the zcode version of zork, and I had no idea how to enter the mirror to get
to the door in the endgame. The walkthrough I had said enter the box. This
did work at all. I found out that I had to simply type enter. That was a
relief to finally figure out, though exasperating none the saime--I do like
the way that one was combined from the three infocom zorks, and it doesn't
hurt they added a bit here and there.
Best Regards,
Hayden

Hmmm, I can't recall azteca specifically, but remember how well you c an
interact with game elements depends very much on how much of a brain the
creator had.

I spent ages trying to get through the fireplace in the pentory prequal, ---

north, (sinse it was in the north wall), enter fire place you can't enter
that when it turned out I had to type in, for the love of pete!

I don't remember any such issue with azteca, but I will confess this

As with regular fiction though, this just depends upon who wrote the game,

Hi Mike,
Most games, such as those found on the interactive fiction archive, are free
to play. However, some of (or all of) the companies I've ever heard of that
make these games end up charing a fee to play them, or in the Infocom/Level9
days, buying them on floppy disc.

Hi Muhammed,
A BrailleNote? What? All you need is a zcode interpreter. What humanware did
was to creat an interpreter based on the JZip interpreter. That said, you
can use filfre, or either of the frotz interpreters to play those games.

I've run win frotz with Hal, win frotz tts, and win tads.

personally, I've always gone on what games I liked, rather than the
interpreter.

Thus my favourite games have been worlds apart and bable which were tads,
dreamhold, the djini chronicles, pythos mask, lash and wearing the claw
which were zcode, and then the earth and sky series which started in
zcode,

then moved into glulks.

No problem with traffic about if on this list, --- ask away.

If you are a newby though, you could do much worse than checking out

you can run this with windows frotz, winfrotz (including the winfrotz tts

It's a really great story and adventure, but whats' more is it's probably
the best introduction to If I've seen. there are various ones knocking

Hi. You will want to right click on the link for the audio tutorial. The
right click can also be performed with the applications key or shift+F10.
Then, select save target as if you are in internet explorer, or save link as

What am I doing wrong or is the audio tutorial only for the paid full

Hi Dark,
In regards to an earlier post of yours, I know what you mean. I was
playing
the zcode version of zork, and I had no idea how to enter the mirror to
get
to the door in the endgame. The walkthrough I had said enter the box.
This

did work at all. I found out that I had to simply type enter. That was a
relief to finally figure out, though exasperating none the saime--I do
like

the way that one was combined from the three infocom zorks, and it doesn't
hurt they added a bit here and there.

Actually mike, it's malinch who are the exception, being as apart from them

Hmmm, I can't recall azteca specifically, but remember how well you c an
interact with game elements depends very much on how much of a brain the
creator had.

I spent ages trying to get through the fireplace in the pentory

I don't remember any such issue with azteca, but I will confess this
business with the prequal, and the fact that I can make no headway

In regards to an earlier post of yours, I know what you mean. I was
 playing
the zcode version of zork, and I had no idea how to enter the mirror to
 get
to the door in the endgame. The walkthrough I had said enter the box.
 This
did work at all. I found out that I had to simply type enter. That was a
relief to finally figure out, though exasperating none the saime--I do
 like
the way that one was combined from the three infocom zorks, and it doesn't
hurt they added a bit here and there.
 Best Regards,
 Hayden

Hi Damien,

Considering that easter is based off of the lunar calendar rather than the
more traditional gregorion calendar, how do you have AceFire say happy
easter every year?

Hi mike.

The archive itslef it a big fat file dump with indexes. to find games with a
propper search feature, and reviews and such, go to http://www.wurb.com/if/
then look up worlds apart, dreamhold, bable dragon or whatever.

Hi Mike,
Most games, such as those found on the interactive fiction archive, are
free
to play. However, some of (or all of) the companies I've ever heard of
that
make these games end up charing a fee to play them, or in the
Infocom/Level9

days, buying them on floppy disc.

Hmmm, I can't recall azteca specifically, but remember how well you c an
interact with game elements depends very much on how much of a brain the
creator had.

I spent ages trying to get through the fireplace in the pentory
prequal, ---

north, (sinse it was in the north wall), enter fire place you can't enter
that when it turned out I had to type in, for the love of pete!

Hi mike.

No problem with traffic about if on this list, --- ask away.

If you are a newby though, you could do much worse than checking out
http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/step2.html which have a great
beginners'
guide.

I'd also recommend you try the game dreamhold by andrew plotkin found at
http://ifarchive.heanet.ie/if-archive/games/zcode/dreamhold.z8

you can run this with windows frotz, winfrotz (including the winfrotz tts
version which outputs directly to sapi), or anything which plays z code
game

files.

It's a really great story and adventure, but whats' more is it's probably
the best introduction to If I've seen. there are various ones knocking
about, but for a hands on in game intro going through how to give
commands,
and what puzles are, dreamhold is deffinately my favourite (not the least
because it's an incredibly interesting game and story in it's own right).

have any of you ever wanted to use a controller for some of these games
that was only made to play with the keyboard? well here is something
that might interest you all. if you go to google and search for
joy2key you can get a free program that will let you use your
controller for keyboard games. here is exsample i got entombed and as
you all know it is a keyboard game only but with joy2key it let you use
your controller to play the game. here what it does it basically let
you assign keys to the controller you want to use. this don't just
work with games it also work with other programs. check it out i enjoy
useing joy2key to play some of my games that was only meant for the
keyboard. especially entombed because it gives me the feel of a great
rpg that it is.
