Hi,
Well, as many of you know I was sighted for many years. the very first
video game I can remember playing was Packman on my Atari 2600 around
1982 or so. I later got several more games from that era such as Demon
Attack, Space Invaders, Missile Command, etc. All the classics in
other words.
Around 1985 or so I got a Colleco for Christmas and started playing
games like Donkey Kong, Mouse Trap, Smirfs, Zaxon, and several other
games I probably don't recall any more.
1987 I had switched game consoles yet again moving to the Nintendo
Entertainment System. It pretty much goes without saying I had all
the major games such as Megaman, Mario, Double Dragon, Ninja Turtles,
Castlevania, and several more. In fact, I still have the NES and most
of the games in my living room closet.
By this time in my life I was beginning to have a harder time playing
the games because I couldn't see the tv screen very well. Things were
often blurry, but it didn't stop me from continuing to play.
By the 1990's my next major game console, if you wish to call it that,
was an IBM 486 with 4 MB of ram. I played various games such as Duke
Nukem, Overkill, and plenty of games I just don't remember now. I had
several.
In 1996, when I was a senior in high school, I got a new IBM with
Windows 95 on it. About that time there were a number of popular PC
games such as Heroes of Might and Magic, Tomb Raider, Top Gun, Doom,
Jedi Knight, etc which I played. These were really the last games I
could really play as I really couldn't see them well, and I was using
Jaws 2.0 to access the PC because I couldn't see the words, icons,
etc. It basically was just a mindless mess of blurry colors.
Around 1998 I started looking for accessible games. A friend of mine
in college gave me some of Jim Kitchens self-voicing games. Those
proved to be fun little time waisters, but I wanted something more. So
I kept looking. Eventually, I found GMA's web site with Lonewolf and
Trek 2000 which I purchased right away. About this time Shades of Doom
was in testing, and I recall buying it not long after it came out.
As it happens the GMA Games site had a link to the Audyssey Magazine
list and I joined to find out more about it. After that the rest is
history. I have been floating around in the audio games community
ever since.

Re: [Audyssey] Winfrotz 1.16 - with a speech option

2010-04-06 Thread dark
Well, I thought glulks waz too much of a different format anyway for any
frotz interpreter to handle. I do remember once reading an artical saying
that it's the versions of the inform language itself which get updated not
the zcode format, so there's litle need to worry about an updated
interpreter, but I'm not certain, --- -especially as all the recommended If
starter packs I've seen come with older versions.

Are their any release notes?

Only thing have really noticed while trying to get this working up to now,
is that most of the different versions you find are all oldish, whereas,
this installation package in fact seems to have been put together/uploaded
to that site dated as [26-Nov-2009].

Don't think it can handle things like glulx scripts, but most of the games
have here are *.z5 or *.z8 and it's fine with them.

Hi Jacub.

If I remember rightly, windows frotz and win frotz are actually two
different programs, --- though they are similar (I'm not sure if windows
frotz is an earlier version).

I do know win frotz tts is built on an older version of win frotz than
the current one, because I actually foundthat win frotz tts won't play
some of the infocom games like king arthur, where as standard win frotz
will. Tts is convenient, but I played using Hal's virtual focus for
a long while (actually a couple of years before I started playing audio
games), so I don't find this too much of a pest.

in fact, i originally used windows frotz on my old laptop with windows
98, but found the speech not to work (I had no idea sapi even existed
back then or that I had to install it), but found Hal quite sufficient.

It's a shame tts wasn't updated to the latest win frotz, but I'm
generally not sure how the tts developement is going, or even if
developement is continuing at all.

Btw, this really! takes me back.

2010-04-06 Thread dark

Hi.

If you go to http://if.illuminion.de/infocom.html you can find a lot of the
old infocom games which you can then just download.

To play them without compatibility problems you can just open the zcode
inform files themselves in a frotz interpreter.

Hi,
You actually have that one as an inform zcode file? The onlycopy I have
right now has them as DOS applications in .com format, and some of them,
like King Arthur, trinity, and A Mind Forever Voyaging, or either in. exe
format (JAWS does not seem to particularly like the format on those) or
they're in .com format and don't read correctly or at all.

on that note is there any way to play agt files in windows like you play

a

cool addition for the stuff that uses it.
unfortunately there are several dos games I know which I can't play but

the majority is playable now.

To be honest haiden, I never got on well with zork, but then again I
personally prefer if games which have more background than just go into
the

dungeon and grab treasures and more than random puzles.

In fact I must admit, some if puzles just irritate me for their total
lack

of logic.

ah, so I was supposed to open the catch on the rusty door by blowing the

whistle at the bird to scare it off, getting the egg from the nest, then
droping the newspaper and twigs on the floor and using the magnifying

frying it and using it to greace the rusty latch! how silly of me not to
realize that perfectly rational change of logic!

I must confess this is why I don't really play much If anymore, sinse
it's

too much trouble to try and filter the to me, interesting exploration and
story based stuff from all the games based on absurd puzles which i then
need to look at a walkthrough to guess.

Of course, this might just be because I'm probably more inclined toward
rpgs and that style of play myself in general, and didn't grown up with
the

classic if or get into the method of playing it.

In regards to an earlier post of yours, I know what you mean. I was

the zcode version of zork, and I had no idea how to enter the mirror to

get

This

visited ag.net, which introduced me to the large database. and so it
continued, I first signed up to the ag forum, watched for a while then
started using my account for other purpuses than checking for new posts.
then I also signed up for audyssey, and the rest is history.

Hi,
I believe Philip said not long ago if you wanted an html or text
version of the manual you could take the Windows help file that comes
with BGT and extract it with Winrar or Winzip to get at the actual
files inside. Then, convert them to any format that suits you. I
haven't tried this myself, but I think it is a good idea to be able to
have the manual in both audio and some sort of text format.

Hi.

all this talk about if Is getting me a litle nostalgic, so i thought a topic
about how people got into audio games and such might be fun.

For me, I'd always played what graffical games my eyesite could cope with,
first on an atari 2600 (at age 3 and 4), then an amstrad cpc computer
(similar to a comador 64), a comador amigar and finally a Snes (which i stil
own).

But in the mid 90's with the 32 bit 3D era, the number of games I could play
dropped from about thirty percent, to almost none.

Though I used a laptop for school work, and university, it never occurred to
me I could do anything with it bar write. Yes, I had the DD manuals and used
it to do some tabletop gaming in about 99-2000 before I went to uni, but I
never actually thought of games.

It wasn't until 2003, that I saw an artical in a braille publication
mentioning tom lorimers' whitestick.co.uk site and accessible computer games.

Despite a lot of net access shinanigans (hal version 5 and internet access
was fairly new at that stage), I found toms' site, and played a number of
online games like ashes of angels and legend of the green dragon.

I do remember checking the offline games page, but A, the idea of a game with
sound I found rather bizarre, and B, I was stil using a five year old laptop
with windows 98. I did however play a lot of if.

Things went on. I started on Sryth in late 2004, bought an xp desktop in mid
2005, then ran into Bryan peterson. When finding we both had defficient
eyeballs and an interest in exploration games he directed me towards shades
of doom (I stil remember sitting up all night playing it), and by degrees
audiogames.net.

Sinse this corresponded with me finishing my masters and for various
confusing academic reasons having a lot of free time, i signed up to the
audiogames.net forum in 2006, and spent the next few months trying almost the
entire audiogames.net database, signing up to the audeasy list somewhere
along the line.

And the rest is history.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Hi Shaun,
I don't know if you have anything like it in New Zeland but here in
the U.S. there is a place called Batteries Plus. What they basically
do is take devices and replace the rechargible batteries in them for
you. I once took a Braille N' Speak into them and they swapped out the
original batteries in it for new ones and it ran like a charm until it
eventually died around 2003 or so. In fact, the batteries they put in
were better than the original Blazie ones, because when I got the BNS

Only thing have really noticed while trying to get this working up to now, is
that most of the different versions you find are all oldish, whereas, this
installation package in fact seems to have been put together/uploaded to that
site dated as [26-Nov-2009].

I do know win frotz tts is built on an older version of win frotz than the
current one, because I actually foundthat win frotz tts won't play some of
the infocom games like king arthur, where as standard win frotz will. Tts is
convenient, but I played using Hal's virtual focus for a long while
(actually a couple of years before I started playing audio games), so I
don't find this too much of a pest.

in fact, i originally used windows frotz on my old laptop with windows 98,
but found the speech not to work (I had no idea sapi even existed back then
or that I had to install it), but found Hal quite sufficient.

It's a shame tts wasn't updated to the latest win frotz, but I'm generally
not sure how the tts developement is going, or even if developement is
continuing at all.

Btw, this really! takes me back.
Beware the Grue!

hmmm agt is adventure gaming toolkit.
in cosmoserve you are a programmer trying to make your living and you are also
a plumber.
Anyway you need to get this program to a client by 8 in the morning the next
day.
Firstly though you need to find your password.
On finding said thing you log on only to find the system is hacked, a virus has
taken over the net and will slowly eat your system into the ground.
on top of that you need to find how to fix your program, you are hungry and if
you don't get something done you will be quite broke by morning.
hmmm did I mention you could go to jail to, probably die in some places, etc.
in short you are rather a mess.
not that you actually have much time to think about this, as you need to
contend with a hacker and a sysop gone insanely nuts pluss well the virus you
actually do face it.
and well if you don't speak to a sertain someone before you get that sorted
you die.
I think you get the picture.

played.
on that note is there any way to play agt files in windows like you play
other files I have tads and frotz working hugo and glulx which I am happy
using right now but agt and maybe a windows advint interpreter would make a
cool addition for the stuff that uses it.
unfortunately there are several dos games I know which I can't play but stil
the majority is playable now.

To be honest haiden, I never got on well with zork, but then again I
personally prefer if games which have more background than just go into the
dungeon and grab treasures and more than random puzles.

In fact I must admit, some if puzles just irritate me for their total lack
of logic.

ah, so I was supposed to open the catch on the rusty door by blowing the
whistle at the bird to scare it off, getting the egg from the nest, then
droping the newspaper and twigs on the floor and using the magnifying glass
to focus sunlight, then putting the dustbin lid ontop, dropping in the egg,
frying it and using it to greace the rusty latch! how silly of me not to
realize that perfectly rational change of logic!

I must confess this is why I don't really play much If anymore, sinse it's
too much trouble to try and filter the to me, interesting exploration and
story based stuff from all the games based on absurd puzles which i then
need to look at a walkthrough to guess.

Of course, this might just be because I'm probably more inclined toward
rpgs and that style of play myself in general, and didn't grown up with the
classic if or get into the method of playing it.

Hi Dark,
In regards to an earlier post of yours, I know what you mean. I was
playing
the zcode version of zork, and I had no idea how to enter the mirror to
get
to the door in the endgame. The walkthrough I had said enter the box.
This
did work at all. I found out that I had to simply type enter. That was a
relief to finally figure out, though exasperating none the saime--I do
like
the way that one was combined from the three infocom zorks, and it doesn't
hurt they added a bit here and there.

there are several reasons I have not bothered.
one being I don't have a working synth that works.
2. I have no external drive at least one that will run 720kb disks.
3. I don't have a working external synth and or serial ports.
I know hal can handle command mode in windows some but I honestly havn't
bothered with running my games that way.
I use command mode in windows to get system functions that I need to run
outside windows like agx creating and such.
I'm not really that desperate I have most stuff running and I seriously don't
want to run something that will try to directly access hardware meaning
crashing and probably reformatting the system so windows boots.

Hi Shaun,
Have you tried a dos emulator like Dosbox, and if so what was the
result? I mean the Windows command prompt is suppose to be backwards
compatible, to a point, with older Dos applications, but the 16 byt
apps do seam to have problems. There suppose to be work arounds
though.

Hi

if you want to use keynote again, I got a 15 minute demo that runs in a
windows98 virtual machine. so far my efforts to convince humanware to:
1. allow us to use the old keynote demo from 1995 or so, as a full version,
have failed.
2. create a synth voice for ESpeak that sounds like keynote gold, call it the
keynote ESpeak variant or something like that. this so far has also failed. I
will continue to try and get them to either:
1. patch the old unsupported keynote gold multimedia demo to run as full copy
and also patch keysoft gold for win95.
or 2. make a keynote voice variant for ESpeak.
the old unsupported software also runs in a win95 virtual machine very well!
please contact me offlist for more info.

Hi Josh,
Actually, we were talking about the hardware version, the SA, but it

Hi

if you want to use keynote again, I got a 15 minute demo that runs in a
windows98 virtual machine. so far my efforts to convince humanware to:
1. allow us to use the old keynote demo from 1995 or so, as a full
version, have failed.
2. create a synth voice for ESpeak that sounds like keynote gold, call it
the keynote ESpeak variant or something like that. this so far has also
failed. I will continue to try and get them to either:
1. patch the old unsupported keynote gold multimedia demo to run as full
copy and also patch keysoft gold for win95.

or 2. make a keynote voice variant for ESpeak.
the old unsupported software also runs in a win95 virtual machine very
well! please contact me offlist for more info.

[Audyssey] agt status

2010-04-06 Thread Travis Siegel
Agt is freeware (not under the gpl)
and it's source is in pascal (not c)
the latest version is 1.7, and was released in 1994.
If someone has a copy of delphi (unfortunately I do not)
they could easily compile agt for windows.
I've tried compiling it for windows
using fpc, but even in tp7 compatibility mode,
fpc has issues with some of the constructs agt uses.
I'm working on getting these fixed, but until that's done,
I can't do anything such as make an OSX version of the code.
Anyway, just thought I'd clear up the confusion about the toolkit.
Hope this helps.

It'd be great if these games could be playable to those of us who weren't
around playing text games at that period, but I do wonder if, like

Has anyone tried asking on the rec.artsint fiction group or similar If

fix, maybe there would be interested parties on there too.

Just a suggestion.

[Audyssey] BGT platform jumping game

2010-04-06 Thread Jacob Kruger
Very simple so far, but something have been meaning to get around to for a
little while, and only other thing it includes is sound clips, and a method
to say numbers up to 100 as well - started putting it together myself before
noticed that there's an include that comes with toolkit - and was, again,
sort of using it as a way of practicing scripting etc.

Anyway, 935kb zip file, and I also made use of some panning, and pitch sound
effects to render a bit of the character location/direction facing:

http://www.blindza.co.za/uploads/platformJumping.zip

Along the lines of that one, it would be nice if apart from horizontal
panning, there was a form of vertical panning, but I know that would have
more to do with directX, as opposed to simpler channel output/usage, so I
actually just upped the pitch/speeded up playback of the walking/step sound
a little bit when on a platform, and, yes, this is very simple so far, but I
prefer to play around with all sorts of things in a form of step by step
learning process, so let's see...

Basically, you start off on the left hand side at position 1, and you need
to move across to position 50 on the right hand side, and as you walk left
or right with the cursor keys, you'll hear the character walking, with the
sound either panning to the left or the right so you can hear which way
you're facing, but at two random places in the middle somewhere you'll run
into platforms with a width of 3 paces, which will trigger a sort of bump
sound playback, and you then need to hit the space bar without walking, but
while facing the edge, to jump up onto it, then walk across and you'll hear
different sounds for jumping and automatically dropping down on the other
side, and when you reach the other end, it will tell you how many seconds
you took.

At any place you can also hit the P key and it will tell you where you are,
and whether you're up on a platform or down on the ground.

Stay well

Hi Travis,
Thanks for the info. If it were me doing the project I would convert
AGT from Pascal to C++, and release it under some GPL type license so
it would remain open source and could be maintained by the open source
community. However, i don't know that AGT stuff is really that much in
demand any more. I can't even remember anything I've played that
needed AGT off the top of my head. Most of my interactive fiction
games are xcode, tads, and Adrift.

Re: [Audyssey] How did you start?

2010-04-06 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi,

I like many started playing video games in the late seventies and early
eighties on an Atari 2600. I also had a Texas Instruments 99 4A and an Atari
800 XL home computer which I started programming video games on in Basic. Then
in 1990 I got my first talking computer. It was a NEC 286 running Jaws for dos
version 1.0 with an Accent SA hardware synthesizer. So I was now writing blind
accessible text games. In 1990 or 1991 Phil Vlasak found the source code for a
golf game and found a sound file player like Plany and SBPlay and added sounds
to the golf game. You know before that we only used the little PC speaker for
sounds. But now we could add wav files to our games. So I also found a
different golf game and added sounds to it. So in the nineties I programmed
games in dos Quick Basic (PDS7) with text and sound files played via the
external sound file player. In 2000 David Greenwood helped me to get started
switching from dos Quick Basic to Visual Basic for windows. So now in windows
we could play the sounds right in the code of our games and make the games
totally sound based. So that is what I have been doing for the last ten years.
Allot of the time was spent converting and improving my dos games to windows
versions, but I have also written several totally new windows only games.

Just for the heck of it, again here is a list of my games for windows.

Baseball, BattleShip, Black Jack, Bop It, Concentration, Craps, Draw Poker,
Football, Golf, Hangman, Homer on a Harley, Life, Mach 1, Mach 1 tts, Master
Mind, Monopoly, Pong, Puppy1, Roulette, Simon, Skunk, Slot Machine, Snakes and
Ladders, Spanker, Star Mule, Triple J Shooter, Trivia game engine, Trucker,
Yahtzee

Braille reference guide, Brain, Reader, Waver, Batting practice, Golf course
maker

Hi Thomas,

Raceway with real race car physics sounds great! I do not possess math and
math physics knowledge of anywhere near that level. As a matter of fact, I
just make up math for all of my games. No fancy formulas, just addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division and my favorite, the random number
picker. I know that my games are not as advanced as allot of games out there,
but I actually amaze myself with some of the games that I create with my
limited education and not being able to learn from book reading.

effects to render a bit of the character location/direction facing:
http://www.blindza.co.za/uploads/platformJumping.zip

Stay well

Has anyone tried asking on the rec.artsint fiction group or similar If

Just a suggestion.

Dungeon is worth taking a look at, there are some differences that make it
something to look at. For example, the endgame is slightly different in
terms of how it works. Also there's some different locations, and you don't

on that note is there any way to play agt files in windows like you play

unfortunately there are several dos games I know which I can't play but

To be honest haiden, I never got on well with zork, but then again I
personally prefer if games which have more background than just go into
the
dungeon and grab treasures and more than random puzles.

In fact I must admit, some if puzles just irritate me for their total
lack
of logic.

ah, so I was supposed to open the catch on the rusty door by blowing the
whistle at the bird to scare it off, getting the egg from the nest, then
droping the newspaper and twigs on the floor and using the magnifying

egg,
frying it and using it to greace the rusty latch! how silly of me not to
realize that perfectly rational change of logic!

Hi Dark,
Dungeon is worth taking a look at, there are some differences that make it
something to look at. For example, the endgame is slightly different in
terms of how it works. Also there's some different locations, and you
don't

have a silver skull nor a scepter as a treasure. I wouldn't say it's very
different, just nice to check out a compilation of some of my favorite IF
titles and definitely infocom classics.

Hi.

If you go to http://if.illuminion.de/infocom.html you can find a lot of the
old infocom games which you can then just download.

To play them without compatibility problems you can just open the zcode
inform files themselves in a frotz interpreter.

[Audyssey] a question on artificial inteligence

2010-04-06 Thread Yohandy

   Hey all,
For some odd reason, I'm fascinated with AI even though I'm not a
programmer. my question is basically, how on earth could artificial
intelligence outsmart so many people? I think I have an idea of how it might
work for things like adventure game and driving games for instance, but how
does it work for fighting games where so many different options are
involved? I just find it fascinating that computer programs are getting
smarter than human beings in many ways. let's say I'm playing a game like
mortal kombat and I throw a punch. if I have the game on the hardest
difficulty, it's as if the CPU had some mind reading power. it'll
immediately block, or jump over or dodge what I'm trying to do in a split
second. not only that, but it can take advantage of mistakes I make for
example if I do a special move at the wrong time, it'll take advantage of
the opening and I'll immediately be severely punished lol. now I've played
against many players online including friends, and total strangers, and even
so, I sometimes find a computer opponent way tougher than an actual human
being. I just find that incredible. does the CPU load every single move for
a particular character and its opponents weakness into memory before the
fight starts and somehow analyzes everything instantly? It's the only way I
can come up with to explain how it can react so quickly and with such
accuracy. I just find it so hilarious how people on message boards seem to
complain more about AI difficulty than anything else about a game. they can
beat online players just fine, but when it comes to AI they start
complaining oh man how could this computer be so tough etc. anyone wish to
educate me a bit on how AI works? thanks

Hi,

I like many started playing video games in the late seventies and early
eighties on an Atari 2600. I also had a Texas Instruments 99 4A and an
Atari 800 XL home computer which I started programming video games on in
Basic. Then in 1990 I got my first talking computer. It was a NEC 286
running Jaws for dos version 1.0 with an Accent SA hardware synthesizer.
So I was now writing blind accessible text games. In 1990 or 1991 Phil
Vlasak found the source code for a golf game and found a sound file player
like Plany and SBPlay and added sounds to the golf game. You know before
that we only used the little PC speaker for sounds. But now we could add
wav files to our games. So I also found a different golf game and added
sounds to it. So in the nineties I programmed games in dos Quick Basic
(PDS7) with text and sound files played via the external sound file
player. In 2000 David Greenwood helped me to get started switching from
dos Quick Basic to Visual Basic for windows. So now in windows we could
play the sounds right in the code of our games and make the games totally
sound based. So that is what I have been doing for the last ten years.
Allot of the time was spent converting and improving my dos games to
windows versions, but I have also written several totally new windows only
games.

Just for the heck of it, again here is a list of my games for windows.

Baseball, BattleShip, Black Jack, Bop It, Concentration, Craps, Draw
Poker, Football, Golf, Hangman, Homer on a Harley, Life, Mach 1, Mach 1
tts, Master Mind, Monopoly, Pong, Puppy1, Roulette, Simon, Skunk, Slot
Machine, Snakes and Ladders, Spanker, Star Mule, Triple J Shooter, Trivia
game engine, Trucker, Yahtzee

Braille reference guide, Brain, Reader, Waver, Batting practice, Golf
course maker

Hi.

If you go to http://if.illuminion.de/infocom.html you can find a lot of
the

old infocom games which you can then just download.

To play them without compatibility problems you can just open the zcode
inform files themselves in a frotz interpreter.

You actually have that one as an inform zcode file? The onlycopy I have

like King Arthur, trinity, and A Mind Forever Voyaging, or either in. exe
format (JAWS does not seem to particularly like the format on those) or
they're in .com format and don't read correctly or at all.

Hi Jacub.

If I remember rightly, windows frotz and win frotz are actually two
different programs, --- though they are similar (I'm not sure if windows
frotz is an earlier version).

I do know win frotz tts is built on an older version of win frotz than
the

current one, because I actually foundthat win frotz tts won't play some
of

the infocom games like king arthur, where as standard win frotz will.
Tts

is convenient, but I played using Hal's virtual focus for a long
while (actually a couple of years before I started playing audio games),
so I don't find this too much of a pest.

in fact, i originally used windows frotz on my old laptop with windows
98,

but found the speech not to work (I had no idea sapi even existed back
then or that I had to install it), but found Hal quite sufficient.

It's a shame tts wasn't updated to the latest win frotz, but I'm
generally

not sure how the tts developement is going, or even if developement is
continuing at all.

Btw, this really! takes me back.

A lot of the Ai in beat em ups works in much the same way as a chess game,
ie, a set of objectives and expected reactions to certain situations.

So, you if you throw a punch, the computer has a set of routines which
predict the most likely courses of action to follow, eg, whether
you'll continue into a combo, go for a low attack etc.

then of course, there's the chess business, the computer can for instance
know how far away you'll be after a given set of moves, and thus see ahead
to what set of moves would be better for a given situation, --- perhaps
several moves ahead of you, Eg, forcing you to block then hitting with
an unblockable.

Finally, there's the basic question of calculation. The Ai can caluclate all
move distances and ranges precisely. It wouldn't for instance use a special
move when the opponent is out of range, though possibly on easier difficulty
levels, it may be set to react in a less appropriate way, --- eg, not
blocking to give a human a chance.

These days as well, with advances is Ai, even nastier stuff can be done,
such as the Ai literally holding in memory your most frequent actions in
given situations and using them to predict you, this wans't possible
earlier, but with the resources, computing power and amount of cash which
companies spend on games these days, it's entirely possible, indeed
some games such as streetfighter 4 give it as a feature.

   Hey all,
For some odd reason, I'm fascinated with AI even though I'm not a

intelligence outsmart so many people? I think I have an idea of how it
might work for things like adventure game and driving games for instance,
but how does it work for fighting games where so many different options
are involved? I just find it fascinating that computer programs are
getting smarter than human beings in many ways. let's say I'm playing a
game like mortal kombat and I throw a punch. if I have the game on the
hardest difficulty, it's as if the CPU had some mind reading power. it'll
immediately block, or jump over or dodge what I'm trying to do in a split
second. not only that, but it can take advantage of mistakes I make for
example if I do a special move at the wrong time, it'll take advantage of
the opening and I'll immediately be severely punished lol. now I've played
against many players online including friends, and total strangers, and
even so, I sometimes find a computer opponent way tougher than an actual
human being. I just find that incredible. does the CPU load every single
move for a particular character and its opponents weakness into memory
before the fight starts and somehow analyzes everything instantly? It's
the only way I can come up with to explain how it can react so quickly and
with such accuracy. I just find it so hilarious how people on message
boards seem to complain more about AI difficulty than anything else about

Re: [Audyssey] How did you start?

2010-04-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
Very interesting story. The first game I ever wrote was a Blackjack
game in C for my Linux system I was using for my college programming
courses since it came with the free gcc compiler and it was more
accessible than using the Windows Visual C++ compiler.
Like your early games I couldn't really find a good sound library to
play sounds, SDL wasn't out yet, so I ended up writing a handy little
wrapper around sox, a Linux commandline wav file player, and used that
to play sounds like shuffling the deck and dealing cards. It was a
very cool little program. I also wrote a few other card and board
games which would really need to be upgraded to be ported to Windows.
A project someday I'd like to do.

On 4/6/10, Jim Kitchen j...@kitchensinc.net wrote:

So
I was now writing blind accessible text games. In 1990 or 1991 Phil Vlasak
found the source code for a golf game and found a sound file player like
Plany and SBPlay and added sounds to the golf game. You know before that we
only used the little PC speaker for sounds. But now we could add wav files
to our games. So I also found a different golf game and added sounds to it.
So in the nineties I programmed games in dos Quick Basic (PDS7) with text
and sound files played via the external sound file player. In 2000 David
Greenwood helped me to get started switching from dos Quick Basic to Visual
Basic for windows. So now in windows we could play the sounds right in the
code of our games and make the games totally sound based. So that is what I
have been doing for the last ten years. Allot of the time was spent
converting and improving my dos games to windows versions, but I have also
written several totally new windows only games.

Mind, Monopoly, Pong, Puppy1, Roulette, Simon, Skunk, Slot Machine, Snakes
and Ladders, Spanker, Star Mule, Triple J Shooter, Trivia game engine,
 Trucker, Yahtzee

Braille reference guide, Brain, Reader, Waver, Batting practice, Golf course

wow definitely educational! AI holding your moves in memory to predict you?
wow dude, totally evil! that could explain why sometimes the same move
didn't work twice on AI opponents. I actually never considered the bit about
AI determining specific distances for certain moves. that would definitely
explain why I kept getting away with abusing certain moves to my advantage
while standing a bit back, and cpu kept focus attacking like an idiot haha.
I always found that in high difficulty levels computers are extremely
aggressive and the only way to beat them is by outsmarting them which isn't
easy, or an easier method, spamming moves that prove weak against it. It's
kinda funny that if you block on SFIV, sometimes the CPU gets all confused
and just walks around trying to figure you out lol. seth from SFIV is
definitely a character people love complaining about, but even on hardest,
he's weak against sweeps and various moves. I read somewhere that for super
street fighter IV they were gonna make him even harder, so I'm definitely
not gonna have fun with that lol.

like Tom, the very first games I played were mainstream video games. in
fact I only found out about audio games a few years ago. unlike tom though,
I've always been blind. It never stopped me from gaming though. I still have
my super nintendo with lots of old games like super mario all stars, mk2 and
ultimate mk 3, donkey kong country etc. even to this day, I sometimes find
myself hooking up my snes and playing some super mario. so much better than
emulators! nothing like blowing into that cartrage a dozen times to get the
game to work lol. I can still beat many levels. first few levels of super
mario world I can beat with no problems, including the castle. yes sometimes
I use tricks like flying through the most difficult parts, but hey flying's
part of the game and it sure gets the job done lol. this definitely brings
back many great memories.

Hi Shaun,
I don't know if you have anything like it in New Zeland but here in
the U.S. there is a place called Batteries Plus. What they basically
do is take devices and replace the rechargible batteries in them for
you. I once took a Braille N' Speak into them and they swapped out the
original batteries in it for new ones and it ran like a charm until it
eventually died around 2003 or so. In fact, the batteries they put in
were better than the original Blazie ones, because when I got the BNS
originally in 96 it constantly liked saying battery low like the
battery Blazie gave me was junk to begin with.
Anyway, there are places around that can probably fix your Keynote SA
for you. That was a pretty good foreign language synth, and I haven't
seen one of those for ages. Last time I used one was when I was taking
French in school. Now, I remember the Keynote better than i do the
French. Lol!

[Audyssey] wagt

2010-04-06 Thread shaun everiss
Hi all.
well wagt is useless.
most games did not run, the program tried its best but said that it found an
general protection error and died.
correction all I tried did not run.
cosmoserve tried to run but at first wrunb.exe could not be found and so I made
a copy of wrun and named it wrunb and then it ran.
I got aaiiieee
then the title of the game with loads of blank space.
I pushed enter
hal said then
aaaii
then the program crashed.
So again something weird there again.
Though I really can't be bothered looking at it all much now I have one headake.

Re: [Audyssey] BGT platform jumping game

2010-04-06 Thread Jacob Kruger
Well, was just thinking that so far, the next step will be to take it off a
sort of step by step keyboard handling and make it more real time - as in
hold in key to carry on walking/running, and then maybe combine it with jump
key to launch a moving jump.

I tried out moosik, but couldn't really get into playing it too much, but
like said, this is still currently nothing more than experimentation, and it
does help that basics of syntax are basically very similar to my current
programming language, C#...LOL!

From the little I've heard of your game, it definitely reminds me of Super

Subject: [Audyssey] BGT platform jumping game

Very simple so far, but something have been meaning to get around to for a
little while, and only other thing it includes is sound clips, and a
method
to say numbers up to 100 as well - started putting it together myself
before

noticed that there's an include that comes with toolkit - and was, again,
sort of using it as a way of practicing scripting etc.

Anyway, 935kb zip file, and I also made use of some panning, and pitch
sound

effects to render a bit of the character location/direction facing:
http://www.blindza.co.za/uploads/platformJumping.zip

Along the lines of that one, it would be nice if apart from horizontal
panning, there was a form of vertical panning, but I know that would have
more to do with directX, as opposed to simpler channel output/usage, so I
actually just upped the pitch/speeded up playback of the walking/step
sound
a little bit when on a platform, and, yes, this is very simple so far, but
I

prefer to play around with all sorts of things in a form of step by step
learning process, so let's see...

Basically, you start off on the left hand side at position 1, and you need
to move across to position 50 on the right hand side, and as you walk left
or right with the cursor keys, you'll hear the character walking, with the
sound either panning to the left or the right so you can hear which way
you're facing, but at two random places in the middle somewhere you'll run
into platforms with a width of 3 paces, which will trigger a sort of bump
sound playback, and you then need to hit the space bar without walking,
but
while facing the edge, to jump up onto it, then walk across and you'll
hear

different sounds for jumping and automatically dropping down on the other
side, and when you reach the other end, it will tell you how many seconds
you took.

At any place you can also hit the P key and it will tell you where you
are,

and whether you're up on a platform or down on the ground.

Stay well

Re: [Audyssey] a question on artificial inteligence

2010-04-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Yohandy,
Well, AI really is a specialized field of computer programming, and is
rather complex to break down to a newby level. However, I think I can
give you the jist of how it works without getting too technical.
First off there is what we call boolean logic. Generally, computers
operate on the assumption something is either true or false. Usually,
this works ok in normal applications, but in games there are so many
factors that simple boolean logic can't account for all of the
probabilities involved. So in a complex game eventually the boolean
logic will break down and not be very effective.
Fortunately, there is a methodology for handling some degree of
uncertainty by basing an action on probabilities and not solid
true/false logic. This method of AI programming is called fuzzy logic
because it doesn't act on a strict true/false condition. Instead we
use Bayesian updating to calculate a pprobability based on a number of
factors and take an action according to the current probability.
Let's give an example here.
You are playing Mortal Kombat wailing away on some bad guy when he
moves a certain way. Now, there is a certain probability your next
blow will be a strike from your left hand. That isn't necessarily
something that is true/false but can be guessed by your relationship
to him, and your left hand is closer etc. So there is a high
probability generated that you will strike with that hand so the game
will prepare a blocking move antisapating that attack. However, if you
throw a punch with that hand you will leave yourself open for a split
second and there is a high probability he can get a good blow in as
well. So after all this is figured in to a Baysian probability it has
an action in mind, you follow through with that attack, and he nails
you hard and fast.
However, were you to throw a punch with the right hand instead of the
left the AI opponent might have been caught off guard and got wailed
really good. That's what I meant a couple of days ago about being able
to defeat a computer opponent if you can guess its strategy.
Unfortunately, human beings are predictable, because we try to do the
obvious move/attack. If you do something that is counter intuitive it
plays havic with the AI's fuzzy logic and scrambles its probabilities.
In other words try and suprise the AI by doing something unexpected.

HTH

Re: [Audyssey] a question on artificial inteligence

2010-04-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Yohandy,
Oh, yes. As I said earlier it is all based on probabilities. If you
are at a certain angle and distance there are only so many moves you
might be able to do and it picks the most likely attack from the list
of moves.
Plus as Dark was saying the really Pro game developers have created
memories for the AI bots so that the same move doesn't work twice in a
row. If you try the same move twice and a row it would remember that
attack and counter it.

On 4/6/10, Yohandy yohand...@gmail.com wrote:
wow definitely educational!
