Last night my mom called me and told me that my oldest step sister died under extremely tragic circomstances. At this point in time the police are ruling it out is a suicide. To say that this comes as a shocking suprise for the family and is very sad is an understatement. Although, my step sister and I were never close I still feel sad and extremely disappointed in how she chose to end her life. I feel extremely sorry for my neace who will be cellibrating this and every other Christmas without her mother. I also feel deeply sorry for my step father who lost a daughter, and my surviving step sisters who lost one of their sisters. For them Christmas will never ever be the same. For those of you who have faith in a religious background please pray for them in this time of morning and grief. Also pray for my step sister that perhaps she can find happiness in death that she never could in this life time. Moreover, never forget to tell your closest ffriends, family, and other loved ones that you love them. Remember that there is nothing more precious than life, and that no matter how bad life gets at times that taking your own life without a good cause is the greatest tragity of all. Finally, I wish to leave you with something that I learned from this experience. Remember to forgive those who have wronged you, and try to make, if possible, peace with everyone that you can. Especially, those who are your family and friends. Nothing is more tragic than what happened in my sisters' case. I'm not going to get into details and specifics, but one thing I can say is that my oldest sister was troubled. In her death she left behind a lot of unsettled arguments with my step father, my younger step sisters, her grandparents, and things were said in the heat of the moment to each other that can never be taken back or settled in this life time. My youngest step sister, for example, vowed never to see my oldest step sister again in this life time, and now, of course, she never will. My youngest step sister has to live with the guilt of allowing her personal feelings get in the way of making peace with her sister when she could have. Moreover, she now realises she wasn't there for her sister when she went over the emotional brink and took her own life when she needed her family, her loved ones, more than ever. So the lesson I want to pass on to each and every single one of you is don't let your anger, your personal differences, etc go so far that you have to live each and every day of your life regretting the things you have said and done. Make your peace while you have time, and tell those you love that you love them. Let them know you care regardless of how angry you might be at them. Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT
ROFL! OK OK it sounds bad but it's supposed to be simpler than it sounds. You create your account on the website. That process consists of submitting your paypal or credit card id to be charged. Then you just type the user name and password into the program after you launch it and go check your email and reply to the confirmation. For subsequent installations, so for installing it on different computers or reinstalling on a formatted computer, the account is already created so all that is done is the program is installed, launched, user name and password given, then open the email to verify within 24 hours so it won't be locked down again. Are you sure I shouldn't tell FS about this? It might be simpler than what they use right now... Rofl. No, actually, isn't the JAWS registration system such a pain in the butt? Especially when you have a computer that keeps on coming unregistered for goodness knows what reason and won't stay registered no matter what you try? The system would require an account creation which would mean a user name and password. A. Creating an account would be required from within a web browser. Account creation would ask for user name, password, email, telephone number, and information used to charge the customer for the product. B. Email verification would be required. Just reply to the email received. C. Account creation would be automatic, the money charge would be completed upon account creation. 2. The program itself would run in restricted mode without user name or password having been given when the program was launched. Similar to GMA Games. 3. If the user typed in the user name, pressed tab, typed the password, pressed enter when the program was first launched, the program would check if the account was valid and if there were any more allowed registrations in the event that there were a limit. If both checks returned positive the program would: A. unlock the full functionality B. If registration limits were imposed, remove one allowed registration. c. Call a function on the central server which would Send both the account holder and the game creator an email notifying that the program had been registered on a new machine. The email sent to the account holder would inform that person that they must reply to the email within 24 hours verifying that the registration had been legitimate. 4. If the notification email sent to the account holder did not receive a reply within 24 hours, the unlock would be reverted back to demo next time the program connected to the server. 5. Given condition number 4, the program would always quietly attempt to contact the server when it was launched. The way to crack this in the most simple way would be to: A. Have the person who gave you the user name and password reply to their email to verify your legality in registering your copy of the program, or, b. have the person give you the user name and password, then never be online while starting the program. 6. In an attempt to vix the problems addressed in number 5, have the program lock itself if it were unable to contact the server in two subsequent launches maybe? 7. Additionally, the game creator would be able to access the user profile, seeing their user name, email address and telephone number. The developer could revoke one or all registrations. The revoke would only work when the person happened to be online as they started the program. Ok. It's an overly dramatic, complicated sounding deviation from option 3 in your orriginal list of suggestions. Additionally, I soundly doubt that as a programmer I would have the patience to handle the coding and server side developing required to facilitate such a setup. Aside from that, it sounds like an almost simple, easy way to go about this. Just enter your user name, your password, then go check your email and reply to the confirmation email. You could even enter your user name and password every time you launched the program after the 24 hour unlock. Right, so I gave my oppinion, but I don't believe I like my own oppinion now. It'd just cause headaches like options 2 and 3 would, and even if all of the conditions were checked, you could still just reenter the user name and password you had for another full day. And a lot of games won't keep on lasting much longer than a day for some people. Re: [Audyssey] Some Extremely Sad News
Hi there. I am so sorry for your loss. In august a really good friend of 7 years was murdered in his own home in a very well-to-do area of Melbourne Australia, we first met on a chat room, he had a barber's shop, and I'd go and get my hair cut there. Let me share a story with you. While not directly game related, I was in a chat room and I was talking 1 on 1 with some guy about something I don't remember what. When I told him about how I am totally blind he asked if I was serious and I said Yes. The next thing I knew he starts calling me every nasty name under the sun he can think of. Go away you blind retard, you pathetic freak, Hey guys, this blind (expletive) wants to talk to me. Well, I think you get the idea. Then his friend joined in the attack. Peter saw what was happening and quickly put an end to it. The only reason those 2 people stopped attacking me was because they were one of the many people who visited Peter's shop, a lot of people looked up to him, and he had a very strong sence of right and wrong and if he saw someone getting ganged up on, he'd speak out about it and They did not want to end up in Peter's bad books. It always seems that the bad things happen to good people as it did with Peter, we shared many good times together and I will always remember what a decent person he was. So the lesson I want to pass on to each and every single one of you is don't let your anger, your personal differences, etc go so far that you have to live each and every day of your life regretting the things you have said and done. Hello Thomas, My sympathies are with you and your family. I will keep you all in my prayers. This is turning out to be a tragic christmas season. My best friend is losing her grandmother. Her grandmother had a heart attack and a stroke, and her organs are now all shutting down. I wish you and all yours a good christmas, or at least as good a one as you can possibly have with your loss. [Audyssey] problems running Papa Sangre
Hi I have just gotten Papa Sangre and am trying to run it on my Ipod Touch, but once I've walked around for a bit the game closes with no warning and I iether go back to my home screen or something else opens. I've tried turning voice-over on to find out where I am but by then the game is closed. Has anyone else had this, not sure if it's a bug or not. I know I'm not hitting the home key by a mistake. Thanks I'll contact the develepor, but i just thought I'd ask around here too in case I'm doing something wrong. Hi Thomas, Ok, I'm a bit confused. You are going to create a different generator for each name? I highly doubt that's what you mean but that's the only way I can see that not using an automated system is a good thing. Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 2:29 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT Hi Damien, That's true, but what I'm doing makes it harder to create a custom key generator. At least if someone passes their name and key around, and I find out about the key I have a name to tie it to and can either block said name and key in my future products, and can refuse to sell products to the person who shared their key. It is a lot harder to filter out invalid keys if someone has a custom key generator and can make custom keys at will. That said nothing is full proof and I know it. I just gave my reasons for not doing automated key generation, and I'm firm on that point. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT
Hi Damien, That's true, but what I'm doing makes it harder to create a custom key generator. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Some Extremely Sad News
Hi Tom. I'm really sorry to here this, and will be thinking about you and the rest of your family. All the best, dark. - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 6:12 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Some Extremely Sad News Dear list, I regret to inform you that there has been a very very tragic death in my family this weekend. You will never know when tomorrow is simply too late to say, "I'm sorry. I love you." --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Some Extremely Sad News
Hi Tom, I'm really sorry to hear about your news, it's always heart-breaking when someone you love dies, but especially if it happens around Christmas time, it has happened to me although in my case the lady we lost was friends with us all so there wern't any bad feelings. I wish I could do something to help you, but I hope you can accept my condolences and that of my family and friends, we are all praying for you and your family. I will also send some healing tonight when I do my meditation, I just wish I could do more. My heart goes out to you and your family. Re: [Audyssey] Some Extremely Sad News
Hi Nick, That was beautifully said. That has even encouraged me. Thank you. Thomas, very sad news indeed. It's one thing having a family member die through illness, but it's another story when it comes to suicide. I feel sorry for your whole family, especially your sister. I will be praying for you all. All my best, Damien. - Original Message - From: "Nick Helms" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 6:34 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Some Extremely Sad News Thomas, I'm really sorry to hear of the death in your family. You and your family are in my prayers, and, to all who read this who are in a dark place in your life right now, Find a friend or family member who cares. It feels great to talk about it, and even better to have someone to help you to resolve whatever issues you're trying to deal with. My point is that you can come out of your shell, and make peace with those you care about, and live a great life. Don't think that there's no way out, or that you are worth nothing, or that taking your own life would help you or the people you know. That's complete crap. You can work through it, no matter how hopeless you think your situation is. So take those first stepps. Taking your own life is not the way to go, and I'm terebly sorry that Thomas's sister felt that taking her own life was the only way out. In the words of Aaron Lewis "Falling is easy, it's getting back up that becomes the problem. And if you believe you can find a way out, then you've solved your problem." Never give up. Find someone to talk to and work with, and pull yourself back up. It's worth it, I promise. And Thomas, I'm so sorry about your stepsister. Again, you and your family are in my prayers. Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT
Hi Thomas, As far as name registrations go it doesn't have to be a matter of physically cracking the game. It could simply be that there is a customer who gives a key to a friend and thereby leaves room for that friend to pass around the key until it eventually gets to a website maintainer who puts it up for download. Is it really worth making it different for each game just in case all of your customers are honest enough to keep their key to themselves? It's like Philip's article says, if they're going to crack it, they're going to crack it anyway regardless. Regards, Damien. - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 6:29 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT Hi Muhammed, It really comes down to basic security. As Philip explained in his article the more generic you make your registration system the easier it is to crack not just one of your games, but all of them with one simple crack. With an automated security system the registration process, I.E. the formula for creating registration keys, has to be fairly generic in principle. If someone should ever figure out the right formula/process they can create a quick and dirty random generator that not only cracks game x, but will consistantly work for all of your games. Since I create a new random key generator on a per game basis I can at least be assured the same key won't be used for two different products, and a cracker will have to figure out the means of how I generated that key on a per game basis. It is far from a full proof system, but I'll make them work harder to discover how I did it. In short, it adds a little more security to a weak security system. On 12/19/10, Shiny protector wrote: Hi Thomas, I changed my mind. Yes name and key is better. But in stead of you just sitting down and generating keys, why don't you have an automatic system like Munawar does? Thomas, when you mean the police, do you mean forensic scientists? - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 6:12 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Some Extremely Sad News Dear list, I regret to inform you that there has been a very very tragic death in my family this weekend. Hi Thomas, I agree with Peter here. I understand how your feeling now. Don't let your sadness continue for the rest of your life. This is not a rude intention, but the trooth I believe is that life is life. You'd have hard parts, parts your sad in, parts your happy in. So please calm down a little bit. Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT
Hi Muhammed, It really comes down to basic security. In fact, I've been writing an article I'm going to eventually post on my developer's site that pretty much says the same thing in more depth. Bottom line, no matter what you do there are security risks, and a determined cracker will break your security eventually. So the key here is to create a system that will keep your honest customers honest, and as for the dishonest ones don't worry about them. A dishonest customer will do whatever is necessary to pirate your software anyway. It is just one of the many costs of doing business. As both a computer user and software developer I am most comfortable with a name and key system myself. Yes, it is less secure, but the advantages out way the disadvantages. Everytime I buy a new computer, or replace hardware in my PC I don't have to obtain new authorizations for all of my software, nor do I have to be online while I register it all. As a developer the name and key system works easier because all I have to do is put their name into a key generator and it prints out a key. I can then mail that key to the customer and they can use it on one or a hundred machines that they own without that key failing. That means since they have the freedom of choice how to use their key, with in legal means of course, that I don't have to constantly generate new keys because someone purchased a new PC, changed some hardware that caused the registration program to change the hardware ID, or have to write licensing scripts for my website which aren't really as secure as they could be. While online licensing is preferable to a hardware ID system I've never really liked it much as a personal user. It is, well, an inconvenience to have to get online just to license your software. One or two programs is alright, but if everything worked that way it would really suck. Smile. Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT
Hi Philip, Well, I for one, whole heartedly agree with your assessement. Smile. Re: [Audyssey] some problems related to games in java
Hi Hayden, I know. I've seen this problem with some of the PB Games as well, and unfortunately I don't know of any fix. I think it is just one of the many flaws of Philip using a scripting language like Javascript for games rather than something like C++. Javascript was never intended for this type of program, and is mainly used as web scripts and sometimes used as application scripts. Definitely wasn't entended to write full fledged programs. Smile. Re: [Audyssey] Programming Games was Re: Response From Bavisoft To MyInquiry
Hi Ben, Well, there is a certain amount of logic involved in where to start. For example, if I was going to start writing a game today I would declare or create all the base classes containing all the variables and functions required by the people, places, and things used in my project. Next, I would create all the global objects that references those classes. After that I'd have to have some initialization function that initializes those objects, and so on. Since every C++ application starts with the main function I would have to define the main function, and place in it all of my initialization code to load and start the program and launch the main loop, etc. As you might have guessed everything is built upon everything else. Before you can build the house, in this case the program, you have to build the foundation first. Here is a C++ example using my G3D engine to demonstrate what I mean. // Declare audio and window class objects G3D::Audio g_audio; G3D::Window g_window; // Name: main (void). // Description: Entry point for the application. int main () { // Draw the application window g_window.InitializeWindow (800, 600, 32); // Set the window title g_window.SetTitle ("Tomb Hunter I","tomb.ico"); // Initialize keyboard support g_window.InitializeKeyboard (); // Initialize joystick support g_window.InitializeJoystick (); // Initialize mouse support g_window.InitializeMouse (); // Initialize the audio support g_audio.InitializeAudio (g_window.GetHandle ()); // Enter the master game loop while (running) { // Process game events } // Exit the program return EXIT_SUCCESS; } What we have here is a typical main function that initializes various subsystems like the application window, input, audio, etc. However, obviously if those classes such as the Window and Audio class did not exist I could not initialize them with the main function. Therefore the logical place to start would be to go ahead and write the Window and Audio classes so I could actually initialize them with main(). It really isn't difficult to figure out where to start if you think about programming the same way you would build a house, car, or anything else. You have to make the smaller parts, the little pieces, before you can tie it all together and make something out of it. Does that make sense? Hi there, At the moment BGT does not offer surround sound/3d capabilities. Regards, Damien. - Original Message - From: "Kai" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Saturday, December 18, 2010 11:15 PM Subject: [Audyssey] BGT with Surround Sound Greetings Philip et al. Just wondering if BGT supports the surround sound capabilities afforded by DirectX? I was thinking of making a fighting game akin to Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, but my concept of it requires surround sound, so that you can hear when an opponent is behind you, to the side, and in front and every other position in between. Very hard to represent that with stereo (or at least it's a lot less exciting when it's represented in stereo with audio queues). Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT
Hi Phillip, Those are very good points you outline in your article. There is no point, I agree, in making a hardware ID, because in the end it will be cracked anyway. I most definitely agree that the best registration system is name/key. I definitely agree with you about product ID deal. I have 3 computers and I just don't bother anymore to mail the devs for new keys. I end up going to the cracks I have for the games even though I bought the games myself, and the only reason I use the craccks is because of product IDs. Hi anouk. yes, smugglers 4 and tv manager 2 are accessible (though you'll need to know how to drag and drop to play tv manager 2). Empires and dungeons 2 will be more like a mixtrue of single player dungeon crawling and adventures, and building up your castle to fight against the enemy lords, so actually not too much like anacrion (not being set in space for a start), If your interested in rpg or stratogy games though, i can very much recommend Entombed, which is fully self voicing and audio accessible, and a very large and complex dungeon exploration rpg game. Hi Kai, This is not currently in the engine, but we are working on an upgrade from DirectSound to XAudio2 which will provide for a lot more advanced audio functionality including 3d sound and real-time dynamic effects. Re: [Audyssey] Programming Games was Re: Response From Bavisoft
Hi Jim, Well, if we are talking Visual Basic 6 that's true, but you need to understand that Visual Basic 6 is not 100% a procedural language nor was object oriented programming fully implemented either. The public and private declarations for subs, functions, and variables in Visual Basic 6 are borrowed from object oriented programming. No, what I was actually refering to is the difference between standard C and object oriented C++. Where the origeons of object oriented programming and design started. Although, object oriented C++ is based on standard C there were a lot of new concepts introduced in to C++ that C simply didn't have such as classes, public and private data types, objects, inheritance, pollimorphism, etc. C, as in the original C language, was strictly a procedural programming language. The closest C ever got to anything like object oriented programming is structs and unions, and neither of them were able to do the things you could do in a C++ class. For example, everything in a struct is public, structs can not be inherited, and you can not declare two functions of the same name inside a struct like you can in classes. That's why in the late 90's when languages like Java were introduced to programmers it started out using a object oriented design platform rather than the older C-style procedural design. When Microsoft released their .NET Framework in 2002 allof their languaes such as C# .NET, Visual Basic .NET, J# .NET, etc all moved to a full object oriented design. The days for procedural programming is pretty much ancient history in the professional programming world. Even the new Cobol standards introduced in 2010 implements a new object oriented design. So procedural programming is definitely on its way out of the professional and private sector in a hurry. Smile. On 12/19/10, Jim Kitchen wrote: > Hi Thomas, > > Just one little correction I think. Nick, make sure you're entering the correct internal IP. on my router you enter the config panel with theIP ending at 01, so I thought it was the internal. as it turned out though it was not 01, it was 1. may seem like a small thing but it may make a hell of a difference. also check out portforward.com. - Original Message - From: "Nick Helms" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 5:40 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] teamtalk server not able to happen Thanks for the feadback. Re: [Audyssey] Programming Games was Re: Response From Bavisoft
Hi Hayden, I guess the reason that I do not assign a variable type to my variables is because I have never found a need to and am not sure which type would always be the best for what I am using the variable for. In some games though I do have a couple of them assigned such as Public stm as long And that is only because someone shared a bit of code with me and that was how it was. You have to remember that I have never taken any classes in programming. Just started out with some sample source code in 1980 on a Texas Instruments 99 4A home computer. And have just been experimenting every since. So allot of the way that I program is from way back in Basic like GW Basic, Quick Basic, and the extended basic cartridges for the TI 99 4A and Atari 800 XL. Lots of the code in my games today came from my old GW Basic versions. And heck it still works, so why not use it and continue to program like that. Hi Jim, Something elseIdon't understand is why you don't assign your variables a type either; I looked at your number guess code, and all of your global variables were like that. Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Jim Kitchen Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 4:56 AM To: Thomas Ward Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Programming Games was Re: Response From Bavisoft Hi Thomas, Just one little correction I think. In procedural programming you can have public and private variables. That is you can do things at the beginning such as public SpeechRate or dim PlayersNames(10) And those variables are then global throughout your entire program. But you can also do the same in a sub and those variables are then only accessible in that sub. I E you can use the same variable in other subs and the values etc are not carried over from one sub to another. And then there is a bad programming practice that I do all of the time and that is that I do not even declare variables. Just use them on the fly as it were. But that is only if you do not need to declare them such as dimensioned arrays or if you need them to be global. I first noticed this when I got ScienceInvasion; the sound of the Cyclist just sounded weird; it wasn't looping, there was a most definitely noticeable break from one loop to the next. Then I heard Muhammed playing it, and it sounded right as rain. ThenI tried Showdown. What do you know? Same problem. Just a few minutes ago I tried Dark Destroyer; same problem. It would appear that only games written in java are giving me this problem. Anyone have a possible solution to this? Re: [Audyssey] Bananagrams anagram tile game
Hi Charles, Yeah, I also put dymo tape on my Up Words tiles. I think that Up Words is easier than Scrabble. And for me that is because there are words on the board that you can look at and see if you can change them with the letters that you have. And I do like it better when playing with a person who likes to build up words rather than putting words all over the board as if we were playing Scrabble. Just love to change 2 or 3 words at a time and get major points. BFN Jim I wouldn't even write Email without a spell checker. j...@kitchensinc.net http://www.kitchensinc.net (440) 286-6920 Chardon Ohio USA --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Programming Games was Re: Response From Bavisoft
Hi Thomas, Just one little correction I think. BFN Jim Constants aren't; variables don't. j...@kitchensinc.net http://www.kitchensinc.net (440) 286-6920 Chardon Ohio USA --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Registration features of BGT
Sounds good. I definitely agree with you about product ID deal. I have 3 computers and I just don't bother anymore to mail the devs for new keys. I end up going to the cracks I have for the games even though I bought the games myself, and the only reason I use the craccks is because of product IDs. For example, when I was taking C++ in college we didn't start out with something like a calculator or similar app we started with a simple "Hello World" program and went from there. We wrote hundreds of small practice programs that demonstrated some aspect of the language before pulling all that together to write something like a simple ATM machine, calculator, sample Cash Register program, whatever. So instead of thinking of some big complex game like a real time Star Wars game or another Shades of Doom think about writing small practice programs like Guess the Number or an Eight Ball program that demonstrates some aspect of the language before working your way upt to that end project. That's the only way you will ever learn to know when or where to start. I'll say this. I've been oon the internet for several years and have shared my insightes with a lot of people. The most common problem I find with people interested in programming is a distinct lack of patients. They want to pick up a book like Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days, and expectt to start writing something as complex as Shades of Doom the next day. That's just unrealistic. There are so many aspects of the language they need to master before they get from point A to point B that it may mean months of practical general purpose programming, and writing simple programs before they have enough skill to even attempt at writing anything remotely like Shades of Doom. Even though BGT shaves lots of time off programming games etc you still have to spend some time writing simple programs before moving on to bbigger more complex ones. Cheers!
