My reply:

Yeah, you have a point. Some of these super stars have really messed
up lives, and Hawk was really lucky just to die in his sleep while he
was getting his life straightened out. Others weren't so lucky.

For example, in the 1980's there was a female super star named Sherri
Martel. She worked her way steadily through the female devisions of
the AWA and NWA becoming three time women's heavy wait champion for
those companies before landing a job with the WWF. Once she stepped
into the ring with the WWF she won her fourth women's heavy wait
championship, and redubbed her ring name Sinsational Sherri. She'd
hold the WWF women's belt for 15 months before losing it to, then
female rooky, Rockin' Robin. Thing is Sherri Martel was pretty
sinsational in the ring. She had the body of a super model, was
extremely athletic, and that woman could really move when she wanted
to. Her arial moves such as the flying crossbody pin, flying splash,
flying drop kicks, etc were truly something to see. Unquestionably a
talented athlete in her own right. However, like so many super stars
her personal life wasn't so sensational that's for sure. I gather she
was something of a party girl into wild sex, drugs, the usual party
scene. Eventually, it must have caught up to her in the end because
around 2007 there was an announcement on the news and on WWE that
Sharri Martel had been found dead in her home from a major drug over
dose. I can't help but see that as a stupid waist. Granted her
wrestling days were over, as the woman was in her fourties, but she
had worked in the 90's as various ring side managers under the names
Scary Sharri, Queen Sherri, Sister Sherri, and various other heel
rolls the WWF and WCW wanted her to play. She still had many more
years of life left in her, and in fact was going to be hired back to
the WWE to resume her roll as a ring side manager just before her
death. Dumb. Just dumb to kill herself like that accidently or
otherwise.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

I see. Well, I know back when I was using Jaws for Windows. This was
perhaps some 10 years ago I could set Jaws to "say all" and it would
read everything in the command prompt window. I was using something
like frotz and could load up a game like Arthor and it did a decent
job of reading text automatically as long as "say all" was enabled.
Still I take your point. SAPI and prerecorded speech has given
everyone a truly screen reader independant design that doesn't require
a screen reader at all let alone weather it has good command
prompt/terminal support.

For instance, I myself use a screen reader called Orca on Linux. Most
of the time it does ok with gnome-terminal, something similar to the
Windows command prompt window, and I can run text-based programs in
it. Unfortunately, Orca is sort of hit or miss with these games etc.
You might be using Scare and it will fail to read all of the text on
the screen, and the mouse cursor might not be able to read the text
either. For that reason alone when I play Adrift, Tads, or Inform
based text adventures under Linux I often exit the graphical user
environment all together, log into the shell itself, and use a screen
reader called Speakup that was specifically designed for text-based
programs. While it doesn't necessarily read the text automatically I
can review the screen and see what is going on. So I do understand and
know where you are coming from. From that point of view it would be
nice just to use speech-dispatcher and shoot the speech out to one of
the Cepstral voices, ESpeak, Festival, AT&T Mike, etc rather than
fooling with reviewing the screen.

On the other hand what I really wanted to do is write a game like
Piledriver. I.E. just a simple text -based wrestling game. Nothing too
special or complicated which is what we get if we have to include
SAPI, unicode support, and all that other crap that goes with Windows
API programming. Unfortunately, for a C++ programmer you cant just
send an ascii text string like
"hello world!"
to SAPI 5. Instead the Microsoft Windows API forces you to convert
that text string to unicode, and then you can pass it to the Speak()
function. That's something of a pain which is one reason I haven't
used SAPI in a while. I pretty much have to write my own convert
functions to convert a single word or line of text to and from unicode
complecating the source code. Plus making it totally operating system
specific.

I guess the best thing to do here would be to use something like
Scansoft Tom and just record everything from scratch. Then, I could
use LibSDL, which is totally cross-platform, for sounds, music,
sspeech, and input. I'm already doing this for STFC so there is
nothing barring me from doing this with a wrestling game as well.

Cheers!

Hi Thomas,

A similar thing happened to me. Many years ago I quit smoking. Apparently my blood
pressure went through the roof. My aorta tried to explode. It came darn close to
doing so. I did get a life flight helicopter ride to Cleveland. And I now take
eleven blood pressure pills every day. Two other times in my life I made healthy

No more healthy changes for me. I don't think that my health can take it.

Hi Jim,

Yeah, tell me about it. I think for me personally I'll never forget
the day Owen Hart died. I was watching it live when he fell 78 feet
from the roof to the ring below because the harness and buckles
weren't tight enough on his flying entrance for the intercontinental
match. He came down pretty hard, and I was sitting in my dad's living
room watching it when it happened. Well, listening more like as my
vision was pretty much gone then, but still it was pretty shocking
sitting there listening to this event on pay per view as it unfolded.
Then, before the program was over they announced that Owen Hart was
pronounced dead on arival at the hospital. He was only 34 years old
when he died. That's pretty young yet.

Another tragic death in my opinion was the death of Hawk. Throughout
the 80's and 90's I guess he had a serious drug habbit, messed around
with a lot of women, etc and was really heading for an early death
when he finally cleaned his life up. He went through rehab, got
married, started going to church, and the next thing you know he just
passed away in his sleep. I think it is really sad that the guy lived
such a messed up life, only to clean up his act, and then died just
when he was really getting his act together. Doesn't seem quite fair
does it?

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-10 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

Other than web based, I do not know of a single blind accessible game that puts
text on the screen that gets read automatically by all windows screen readers.
It has never worked that way. That is why we have always used recorded speech
and or sapi5.

BFN

- Original Message -
Hi Jim,

Yeah, the basic idea I had for this wrestling game is to create a
text-based game similar to Piledriver or Wrestling League Manager
accept I could add sounds, music, and/or create a better A.I. etc for
the wrestlers. Make the matches more realistic by tailoring the moves
to a wrestlers specific style of wrestling rather than a generic A.I.
for all wrestlers.

Of course, I could make it self-voicing too, add SAPI support, etc,
but I kind of find that unnecessary. The main reason is, and this
could be screen reader specific, but with Window-Eyes assoon as the
text changes on screen it reads everything automatically. That's why I
don't have really a problem with Frotz, Scare, etc for playing text
adventures. It reads everything as soon as the screen changes and I
don't really have to review the screen unless I missed something or
want to check a spelling etc.

Naturally, if this is an issue with screen readers like Jaws not
properly reading the text prompts I could use SAPI etc, but I hate the
idea of having to depend on any Windows specific technology like that.
The more dependencies I add the more code I have to remove and rewrite
for a non-Windows port. That doubles the time and effort involved.
Which brings me to another point you brought up in your message.

The main reason I currently don't have a Linux/Mac OS port of
Mysteries of the Ancients has to do with the API I was using during
beta 14/15. It appears that SFML has a bug in how it handles Windows
display drivers causing the API to blue screen and crash on certain
Windows PCS. So far the problem doesn't apply to Linux or Mac OS based
PCS. Obviously, for a stable comercial project SFML wouldn't work for
a game like MOTA.

There is an alternative API, which I eventually will be using, called
LibSDL. SDL doesn't have any problems with display drivers on Mac,
Linux, or Windows, and has decent keyboard and mouse input. The
joystick input is not quite up to DirectX quality so that's a
disadvantage for software developers. Although, SDL comes with an
audio API SDL Mixer I think I'd rather pair SDL with something like
FMOD or OpenAL which has superior 3d audio support, more DSP effects,
and things like that. Since all of this would take time I decided to
roll back to an older version of the engine, one using DirectX, and
release MOTA as is and wait for the rewrite of the cross-platform
engine. So that's why I have had problems with cross-platform
development.

However, with our wrestling game none of this has to be an issue. I
wasn't really planning on using SDL, DirectX, SFML, etc and simply
rely on simple input/output methods that every operating system uses.
Creating a simple input system such as pressing b for body slam or v
for virticle suplex is easy enough to do without resorting to low
level event driven input such as DirectInput or LibSDL provides. Of
course, if we are thinking something more than a text based game,

2011-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward

Of
course, if we are thinking something more than a text based game,
something a little more modern with speech, sounds, music, etc then it
would probably be better just to use SDL from the start.

As far as it being mainstream I wasn't saying i wanted to be
mainstream. I was merely pointing out that if I created it as a
text-based game some mainstream gamers might play it. True it isn't as
fantastic as WWE Raw VS Smackdown for the XBox etc but you never know
who might stumble across it and play it. My point simply was that text
games still have followers in some mainstream markets, and by writing
it as text it might apeal to that market.

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Well, I have nothing but absolute respect for BGT as a comercial game
development tool, but there are a few reasons why I personally
wouldn't choose it for an open source project like this. Some reasons
are personal, but the main reason has to do with the spirit of the
open source movement in the first place.

First of all, when an open source developer decides to create
something as open source usually he or she decides to use a language
and development tools that are an open standard among software
developers. If he/she is a C++ developer they might use C++ with the
gcc/g++ compilers. If he/she is a Java developer they might use the
free tools from Sun or the new Open Java JDK. If he/she is a .Net
developer they'll pick something like Monodevelop over Visual C# just
because it is free and cross-platform. What all of these languages and
tools have in common is they are 100% free, open source, and
cross-platform as well. That's what the spirit of open source is all
about.

With BGT it is a closed source, comertial product, designed for free
or comertial games. Its primary drawback is in demo mode you can write
code, run it from source, but you can't compile and redistribute
anything until you pay $29.00 for the BGT Light version. That's not
bad, financially speaking, but it defeats the purpose of a totally
free and open standard everyone can use without extra expense. That's
why it isn't really for open source developers.

Second of all, is this issue over single-platform verses
multi-platform development. Someone who is a die-hard Windows user
probably won't care if the software is a single-platform or
multi-platform application as long as his/her platform, Windows, is
supported. However, for those of us who choose not to use Windows and
have chosen to use Mac OS, Linux, and so on we feel this general
snubbing of non-Windows platforms is both unfair and unnecessary given
the fact that more and more cross-platform tools and languages are
being developed to handle this problem. So for us it is a big issue.
As a result most open source developers do there best to use a fully
open standard that allows the software to be recompiled or ported to
other operating systems with relative ease.

For example, take Mozilla Firefox. Over the last few years it has shot
up in popularity, and is now rated by many reputable computer experts
to be the leading web browser on the market today. There are two very
important reasons why. One, it is open source so that anyone who has
an idea how to improve the product can submit source code, patches,
upgrades, etc giving it a huge developer base that Microsoft simply
doesn't have. Two, it is supported on several operating systems and
platforms such as Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, etc. As a
result instead of just targeting one single platform and group of
users it pretty much covers them all with a single uniform product
that works exactly the same for each and every target platform and
group. As someone who uses Firefox both on Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux
10 I rather like having the ability to use the same exact application
in both environments.

With a game like this wrestling game we were talking about a text
application kind of like Piledriver or Wrestling League Manager.
Something like that is easy to port from Windows to Linux or Windows
to Mac because all we are dealing with is straight text input/output
rather than platform specific graphical user interfaces like Win32,
GTK+, or coaco. If we want sounds there are cross-platform libraries
like OpenAL which would do the job nicely. I just don't see any need
to tie the game to any specific platform by using a tool like BGT just
because it might be easier to use.

As I said earlier BGT is nice, but it goes against the spirit of open
source. With open source the general idea is you write the source
code, make it available to the public, and then they can do what they
want with it. They can build a version for their Apple IPhone,
recompile it for Mac OS, I can compile a copy for Linux, Windows users
can compile a version for Windows, and everybody is happy. There is no
complaint of this or that platform or group of users being ignored or
snubbed.

Finally, there is the target group itself. You know, up until now I've
focussed mainly on accessible audio games. This is a little different.
By being text-based it could become a mainstream product. I.E. someone
sighted might choose to play it the way many sighted players play
text-based games like the PK Girl, Zork, etc. Although, killer
graphics etc seems to be the norm as far as mainstream public goes I
know many sighted people who still like text games too. So we might
find out this game has a bigger player base than something like
Mysteries of the Ancients that was only designed specifically for a
blind target group. So I don't know if tying it to a blind specific
product like BGT is a good idea with that in mind.

Smile.

Hi Jim,

Oh, yeah. I know. Mis Elizabeth's death was rather tragic and very
very unnecessary. I think she was only in her early 40's when she
died. It was a drug over dose as I recall. If I remember correctly
there was some debate at the time if it was accidental, suicide, or
murder.

As for Sylvester Ritter, AKA the Junkyard Dog, yeah, I believe he died
in a car wreck about 98 or 99. I was at college at the time, and
that's why I think it must have been during the late 90's. Too bad as
he was a great football player and wrestler. All I can say is he must
have had one hard head as in most of his matches he headbutted the
aponents multiple times. Plus the funny barks, growls, and doglike
antics that made him famous. It was his unique style of brawling. Lol!

Cheers!

Hi Jim,

Yeah, I've heard of the hall of fame game. Actually, there have been a
number of wrestling games released the last few years with some
allowing you to unlock classic super stars and wrestle them against
todays top performers. Sadly some of the performers I grew up watching
have started passing away the last few years. Andre the Giant passed
away in 93, Hawk from the Road Warriors passed away i think in 2003,
and somebody else passed away not too long ago as I recall. So I'm
really starting to feel my age when we talk about some of these
classic super stars. There is nothing quite like a trip down memory
lain.

Anyway, it would be a lot of work to write around a certain super
star's personality and fighting style, but I think it is necessary.
Every performer has his or her own unique style in the ring which
makes it so interesting. You have your high fliers, the guys who do a
lot of flying moves, and then you have your brawlers who try to beat
you into the mat. Other wrestlers specialize in technical moves like
headlocks, leg locks, arm locks, etc and try and wear the guy down
before going for a pin or submission hold. All of these things are
unique, and in my opinion would make for a much more interesting game.
No two matches would be alike if each wrestler had his or her own
individual A.I.

Cheers!

Hi,

Smile. Oh, I am definitely planning on doing it. There seams to be
enough interest so I have plans to work on this here and there as I
have time. In fact, what I've decided to do is split the game into two
projects. One, will be a WWE Legends type game where you get to play
classic super stars like Hulk Hogan, Jake "the snake" Roberts,
Junkyard Dog, Greg "the hammer" Valintine, Ricky "the dragon"
Steamboat, and Roudy Piper. The other will feature super stars from
the last 10 years or so like Big Show, Edge, Cane, CM Punk, etc. So I
think that will about cover it.

Hi,

True enough. Although, the fact it is open source does beg the
question of what language to write it in. I'm obviously in favor of
C/C++, but I get the feeling others might want it written in something
a little easier. If it was written in C-Sharp, for example, it might
be more easier for someone else other than myself to upgrade. Plus if
written using Mono it would be fully cross-platform too. The downside
of using .Net is of course you have to have .Net version x installed
to play it. That might be alright for some, but I know there are some
people who are against .Net inprinciple. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Hi Jim,

Honestly, I don't know much about TNA Impact and have only watched it
a couple of times. All I know about it is that it has inherited a few
super stars like Jeff Hardy from the WWE, and has a bunch of other
wrestlers I've never even heard of. So for that reason I wouldn't be a
good authority on creating a TNA Wrestling game. Besides that I'm
thinking of explicitly creating a game based on the WWE roster, either
past or present, rather than one of the little known outfits like TNA
which has only ben around five or six years or something like that.
Although, I am given to understand TNA has slowly been growing in
popularity over the last couple of years.

Hi all,

Ok, I downloaded these wrestling games, and as advertised they are
pretty good. In fact, I just got done playing an awesome match between
the Ultimate Warrior, one of my favorite wrestlers of all time, verses
the Undertaker in Pile Driver. As said, it is a good game, but I
personally think I could have done a slightly better job on either
game development wise. So that leads me to a question.

If people are actually interested in these sorts of games I think I'd
like to rewrite Pile Driver and add some actual sound effects such as
crowd ambience, bells for start and end of matches, some general
sounds of a body hitting the matt, etc while retaining the text
interface. What do you guys think? Would you be interested in
something like that?

Also from what I can tell they are all over the place in terms of
professional wrestlers. We have classic WWF/WWE wrestlers such as Hulk
Hogan, Rickie Steamboat, Randy Savage, and the Ultimate Warrior and
then there are some more current WWE wrestlers like Chris Jarico as
well. We've got wrestlers from the NWA and AWA thrown into the mix
too. My thought is if I did decide to rewrite one of these wrestling
games is we could sort of focus on a specific Federation and/or era.
For instance, I'm a huge fan of the 1980's WWE classic super stars so
we might have a wrestling game or special mode only to play that era
of super stars. Of course, like all true wrestling fans I still watch
WWE Smackdown, Raw, and now Tough Enough so would be just as willing
to play a game featuring more contemperary super stars like Edge, Ray
Mysterio, Big Show, etc. Any thoughts?

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-06 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

Yes besides the original T N A wrestlers a bunch from WWE, ECW and WCW are
there now. Hulk Hogan, Rick Flair, Nick Foley, Sting, Curt Angle, Kevin Nash,
RVD, Ken (Mister!) Anderson, Tommy Dreamer and Micky James etc.

You know they just came out with a new video game that has Hall of fame super
stars such as Andre the Giant verses current super stars such as The Big Show.

It would be cool to include all wrestlers of all times, but it would be allot of work
to be sure that they specialized in their move and did not do moves that they never
did. Like you would never ever see Andre the Giant doing a four fifty splash off the
top rope.

Cheers!

Cheers!

Hi Hayden,

Yeah, if you mean the online wrestling game I agree. It was not very
good. At least a gamelike Pile Driver is easy to learn. It is all menu
based so you pretty much push 1, 2, or 3 and then select the move you
want to try and perform. That much is cool about Pile Driver.
Although, the menus should be a little more wrestler specific as I
can't see someone likeKingkong Bundy performing a high flying drop
kick. That's more something like Koko B. Ware's style.

Hi,

Sure it would be free. Since in order to make it authentic, true to
life, I'd probably have to use actual super stars and trademark events
like Wrestlemania. According to copyright law that is generally ok
provided the work is free, not sold, but there are huge restrictions
if you make it a commercial product. So for the moment I'm thinking
of a strictly free and open source product here.

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ken,

The elimination chamber is really a cool match. Basically it is a type
of steel cage match were there are six wrestlers, who are put in
holding chambers, and every couple minutes one of them is released to
enter the ring to face one or more aponents who has not been
eliminated. There are no count outs, no disqualifications, and
anything goes. You are only eliminated by pinfall or submission. The
last Elimination Chamber match, in last February, was simply awesome.
The current heavy weight champion, Edge, won it by the skin of his
teeth. He and Ray Mysterio started the match, and managed to eliminate
everyone and were the last two men standing in the ring before Edge
took Mysterio down to retain his title. Coding a match like that would
be a nightmare. Lol!

As far as classic wrestlers and an elimination chamber match goes that
would be something to see. A lot would depend on who was in the match.
If Andre the Giant was in it he would certainly be the most likely guy
to win it. He one more battle royals than anyone else in WWF history
as I recall. I know in Wrestlemania II he sure eliminated people left
and right. It was really funny when the Hart Foundation tried to
double team him, and he tossed them around like a couple of light
weights before simply tossing them out of the ring on their heads.
Lol!

Cheers!

Hi,

Hmmm...That's a thought. We will see. The thing is if we are talking a
season mode including main events those are kind of era specific. Some
of the newer main events like Elimination Chamber are relatively new
editions to WWE wrestling so wouldn't apply to 80's and early 90's era
wrestling, but would apply to current wrestling matches.

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Sounds like a good idea to me. Being open source we pretty much could
have an an original version and branch off from there.

For example, one aspect of wrestling totally ignored in games is the
Women's wrestling. I remember back in the 1980's and 90's some of the
women wrestlers for the WWF and Glow were extremely hot looking. Wendy
Ricter, Sally the Farmer's Daughter, Rockin' Robin, Holliwood and
Vine, etc are as memorable to me as their mail counterparts like Hulk
Hogan and Randy Savage. I don't know what any of the newer WWE women
wrestlers like Eve look like, but my wife says some of them are nice
looking. Unfortunately, I miss the eye candy. Anyway, my point is that
women's wrestling is often ignored in favor of male wrestlers.

For instance, I know I still remember watching Wrestlemania I live,
yes 27 years ago, when Wendy Ricter, accompanied by Cindy Lopper, won
the WWF Ladies Championship. It was really a great match up, was one
of the best matches in Wrestlemania I, and I certainly wouldn't mind
playing a game from a female perspective once and a while. However,
most if not all wrestling games I've encountered are strictly male
only. Kind of too gender specific in my book.

For one thing on WWE there is sometimes mixed gender tag team matches.
If you tag your partner and she enters the ring the other female
partner for the aposing team must enter the ring which by the very
rules usually means you get two completely fresh people in the ring.
This completely goes against normal tag team tactics where you can tag
in and out and soften up one member of the team at will. It totally
changes the strategy and tactics of the match because only male
partners can wrestle mmale aponents and female partners can only
wrestle female aponents.

Cheers!

Hi Mike,

A couple days back Matheus uploaded a copy of two MS Dos wrestling
games, Piledriver and Wrestling League Manager, and the links should
be in the list archives. Basically, what we are discussing is
rewriting these games to add story mode, more moves, more main events,
etc. One thing I'm not sure on is weather people want me to use
legendary/classic super stars from the 80's and 90's or more modern
super stars like Edge, Ray Mysterio, etc. I myself am in favor of a
more classic wrestling game since that's what I grew up on, but I
still keep up with the current super stars too.

How about classic stars but with all the match types? The elimination

hi thomas.
in the pile driver game you can already create new wrestlers. i for
example like to watch ufc games. i know that there are the ufc
undisputed games for the ps3 and x360. but i don't have these consoles.
if you're planning to create something like this, there should be more
objects to use against your opponents, more attacks, variation in
matches, etc.
but i'd prefer a good text rpg with lots of exploration, an editor so
peoples could create new dungeons or new areas, weapons, monsters, etc.
cause i haven't seen a good one besides entombed.

Cheers!

Hi Dark,

Lol! Yeah, sometimes soap opera isn't the word for it. Just this year
we had Edge's ex, Vikie, who was temperarily put in charge of Raw, and
she tried to ban Edge from using his trademark move the spear on
anyone. This was an underhanded attempt to get Edge to lose his heavy
wait title etc. Never-the-less at the Royal Rumble she gets knocked
out and Edge uses the spear anyway and wins the match. Some of the
crap they come up with is funny to watch. Edge defacing Del Rio's new
Rolls Royce at Wrestlemania 27 was helarious. It is this sort of
sidebar action that is absolutely missing in games like Piledriver.

Hi Dark,

As it happens that's kind of my point of rewriting something like
Piledriver. I find some of the descriptions fairly simplistic, not
very random from announcement to announcement, and you have no career
mode for wrestlers per say.

For example, let's assume in our fantasy WWE game the Undertaker has
the world heavy wait title. Now, you shouldn't be able to just
chalenge him to a match until you have won at least x number of
matches, and have litterally become the top contender for the title as
far as stats goes. Of course, there are certain main events you might
be able to win that will advance your career such as the money in the
bank match, winning the royal rumble, or coming out on top in the
elimination chamber, etc. If we are talking 1980's WWE wrestling some
of these types of matches like the elimination chamber wouldn't exist
yet. However, having main events like Wrestlemania etc would make it
possible to wrestle an entire season and work your way towards a title
match with one of the champions.

Plus there is another aspect to wrestling besides the matches
themselves. I'm talking about some sort of story mode. Usually, there
is always some back story that goes along with the matches. I.E.
during a match your apponents friends came out and beat you up causing
you to lose that match. Now, you are on a mission to beat each and
every one of them and prove you are better than they are. Another
story idea is your tag team partner turned on you during your last
match and now you challenged him to a one on one match to settle the
score. Things like that, although not necessary, adds a bit of drama
to the game. I imagine that's why if you watch WWE Smackdown or Raw
every week it often seams more like a soap than a sporting event.

So, yeah, I basically want to revamp Piledriver and make it more
realistic. I also think since it is mainly text anyway I could produce
Mac and Linux versions as well. It would go a long way to my goal of

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-05 Thread dark

Hi tom.

This is just what I would like to see in the game and why I do not
personally considder pile driver a correct game at the moment. i do know
people who I know watch wrestling not for anything to do with the matches,
but entirely to watch the interviews and crazy soap opera style plots that
go on, in fact I know people who tape it and just watch the out of match
stuff for the story ;D.

this is what imho a wrestling game should be like, random events, multiple
choice interviews, and matches that work up to something not just throwing a
bunch of stats together.

2011-04-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Matheus,

Good point. Although, the one thing that strikes me as problematic
with Piledriver in particular is the WWE wrestlers don't often use
their trademark moves, or that they perform a move they couldn't
perform. Here is an example.

I was having a match with King Kong Bundy. Now, anyone knows this guy
topped out at something like 468 pounds at the height of his career,
and was no great high flier. Never-the-less He jumps up and drop
kicks me in the face. I know for a fact the real King Kong Bundy
couldn't perform that maneuver. So there are cases were the game
doesn't take a wrestlers abilities into account. So I think something
like that needs to be corrected to make the game playout more
realistically for mine.

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-05 Thread Thomas Ward

It would go a long way to my goal of
creating games that aren't Windows specific, but are great to while

Cheers!

hi dark.
not true.
you can fight in many different matches: tournaments, single, etc.
these games are not only "simulators" on my point of view, why? each
player have his stats(e.g: number of fights won, lost, etc) so you can
have a txt file keeping track of how well you're doing. and since you
can create new wrestlers, you can do everything you want, even for
example create a text file with a elimination tournament and write how
well you're doing. considering that this game was produced in 1990's
it's a very impressive work.
i didn't said that thomas idea of recreating the game with changes
wouldn't be cool, yes, it would.but since we already have 2 of these
games, why not create something else like a expandable text rpg with
more and more content being added to it, creations of users, dlc
content, everything like that.
just my opinion.

Hi Tom. n

The principle reason the games haven't got database space, is that they
struck me far more as simulators than actual playable games.

What I mean is, you create your own wrestler or use a stock one, create your
own league and matches etc. There is no ability to fight in pre made game
matches, compete for a title, train your wrestler from first to last etc.

therefore, if you were thinking of revamping Piledriver, I think this is
something which might be a lot more fun to add.

Btw, those interested in wrestling generally might enjoy the wrestling game,
an online wrestling game where you get to create your wrestler, train, fight
matches and even invent your own moves.

the fighting, skills and training system in the game I found particularly
impressive, as were the fight descriptions.

Cheers!

in the pile driver game you can already create new wrestlers. i for
example like to watch ufc games. i know that there are the ufc

if you're planning to create something like this, there should be more
objects to use against your opponents, more attacks, variation in

but i'd prefer a good text rpg with lots of exploration, an editor so
peoples could create new dungeons or new areas, weapons, monsters, etc.

crowd ambience, bells for start and end of matches, some general
sounds of a body hitting the matt, etc while retaining the text

Cheers!

Although I am not a fan of these professional stunt men, your game ideas
would be my preference over what you have just experienced.
