The same flag was set as +drafts for the same zeromq package in another config file as it was earlier demanded by jupyterlab package. So, the issue is currently fixed. Thank you.
[gentoo-user] portage ignores -drafts flag set in /etc/portage/package.use
After running the following command to update my Gentoo: # emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --backtrack=120 --verbose-conflicts --ask world portage reported the following: The following USE changes are necessary to proceed: (see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details) # required by dev-python/pyzmq-25.0.2::gentoo[-test] # required by dev-python/qtconsole-5.4.0::gentoo # required by dev-python/ipython-8.12.0::gentoo[qt5] # required by dev-python/ipyparallel-8.4.1::gentoo >=net-libs/zeromq-4.3.4-r1 -drafts I have set this in /etc/portage/package.use/ipython file. However, after running the command # emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --backtrack=120 --verbose-conflicts --ask world once again, portage reports the same message again and refuses to proceed. I even allowed it to write to a file in the package.use directory itself, which it did creating a new file there. However, after running the command # emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --backtrack=120 --verbose-conflicts --ask world it again reports the same message: The following USE changes are necessary to proceed: (see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details) # required by dev-python/pyzmq-25.0.2::gentoo[-test] # required by dev-python/qtconsole-5.4.0::gentoo # required by dev-python/ipython-8.12.0::gentoo[qt5] # required by dev-python/ipyparallel-8.4.1::gentoo >=net-libs/zeromq-4.3.4-r1 -drafts Trying to run the command # emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --backtrack=120 --newuse --verbose-conflicts --ask world does not change much as well. I have also tried to recompile the package zeromq with the command # emerge -1 zeromq As the result the package has been recompiled but with the same +drafts use flag.

Moreover, if it happens and the sound is absent, the alsamixer shows that my USB Logitech webcam is considered by the system as a default sound device. So, it tries to send sound there even though it does not have any speaker.

It is exactly how I intended to do this, and sorry for not having done it yet. However, I have found that the problem of the incomplete rendering symbols in text mode appears only after I play youtube videos in google-chrome and persist after exiting it. Playing youtube videos in firefox-bin does not cause this problem to appear, nor does running google-chrome without playing youtube videos in it. Moreover, in Firefox-bin, I even do not have the problem with incomplete rendering symbols in the youtube video player toolbar. So, I already can blame this problem completely on google-chrome. Moreover, I already know how to avoid it. :) P.S. My current version of google-chrome is 101.0.4951.54. However, the problem already appeared in its earlier versions and has survived several updates of the google-chrome.

Today, I emerged xfce4-meta, started XFCE4 and spent a short period of time within it. For this short period of time, the "problem" with rendering symbols in youtube video player toolbar in google-chrome appeared in exactly the same way as it appeared within Awesome WM. I have also noticed the problem with rendering letters in google-chrome. However, it appeared a bit different: parts of letters in an html page were closed by small black boxes, however not everywhere but only on a side panel. At the same time letters of a word written on a button had exactly the same rendering problem as within Awesome WM. So, it seems that the problem is not specific to Awesome WM. It seems to me that the problem is somehow related to redrawing a frame. However, I am still not sure if it is a problem of software or hardware. I have not tried another google-chrome profile so far.

Yes. Thank you for replying to this thread once more. Yesterday evening I finally managed to catch the problem with incomplete rendering of cyrillic letters "in text mode" and make a screenshot of it. This time, it happened in html page that was open in google-chrome. A properly cropped screenshot of it is attached to this email. As it may happen that you and other readers of this thread are not familiar with cyrillic letters to the extent needed to see that they are rendered incomplete, I also add a screenshot of the same text rendered complete. I made it this morning with the same google-chrome. By the way, this means that the problem appears from time to time and does not look to be easily reproducible. I even assume that it may be a hardware problem as my computer is quite old, but unfortunately can not check this assumption so far. > I noticed that those applications you mention are all GTK-based. Yes, I try not to mix GTK and Qt on this old computer as much as possible to reduce the time needed to update the system. So, most of the applications on it use GTK. The only one that I know uses Qt is VLC as it does not work properly with GTK. However, I use it quite rarely. > Do you have any available that are built on Qt (or any other toolkit)? This could tell > us whether it’s an issue with your existing profile. I will try to create a new user and run google-chrome from his profile and report the result here. However, when the disk with my /home directory was for a few months installed on another computer also runned by Gentoo with similar configuration I have not noticed such problems. Moreover, I am starting to suspect that the problem with incomplete rendering letters "in text mode" and the problem with symbols in the youtube video player toolbar may be separate ones as the latter is much more reproducible and appears only in google-chrome (have not noticed it in Firefox, for example, though I quite rarely use Firefox to view youtube videos).

First of all, thank you for replying to my question. By "text mode" I mean that "it happened in Gvim, in a web-browser and in a dialog-window for saving files" but not in videos or pictures. > Which terminal are you using, and—most importantly—which font? I am using xfce-terminal, and it is using Monospace Regular font on 11 pt. In Gvim, I use the same Monospace Regular font on 10 pt. So, I will try to explain: When I press Ctrl+s to save an html page from the google-chrome a dialog window is opened with the suggested name of the file that ends in "html." There is a dot before that "html" but sometimes it was not shown to me. This problem with dots and top parts of letters *faded* after I updated the freetype package this Sunday. However, I cannot say that it stopped immediately after this update. It indeed *faded* during a few rebooting after that. > > Some letters can be shown without their top parts. I was able to reproduce it just now and made a few screenshots. I will add "a nicely cropped" ones as attachments to this email. It as also interesting that the symbol in the youtube player toolbar that was shown only partially changes to the full one when I move a mouse pointer over it. > > However, I do not see any distortion in playing videos. > > Did you set up a strange or very unusual DPI value for your font rendering? No, I have not played with this. And moreover, with the same settings, it was completely ok for years.
[gentoo-user] Some symbols render incomplete in text mode
After a recent update of my Gentoo system, I have noticed that some symbols may be rendered incomplete in a text mode. It happens in Gvim, in a web-browser and in a dialog-window for saving files. Maybe, also in xterm but I am not quite sure about it. So, it is not specific to any application. For example, while saving a web-page from a google-chrome, I sometimes cannot see a dot before html. However, it is present there. Some letters can be shown without their top parts. In youtube videos, I may see only the lower part of a gear that denotes some customization features and so on. However, I do not see any distortion in playing videos. Does anybody have any idea on what may cause such effects?

Last time I have ended the discussion on my "no sound" problem acknowledging that I was so stupid that "forgot that I should use M to unmute a channel in alsamixer." However, it turned out that it was not the case: currently I have all channels in alsamixer unmuted and have sound only in about 1 from 10 bootings of my Gentoo system, while I do always have sound on the same computer while I boot it with Ubuntu 20.04. I have also compared the output of lsmod command on both systems and found out that my Gentoo system had all sound kernel modules that my Ubuntu system has and even more. (In Gentoo, I still have quite an old 5.4.97 kernel, but I do not think that it is the cause of my "no sound" problem.) Of course, it is completely my responsibility that I have built my Gentoo system in such a way that I never know if I will have sound after its next boot. However I am lost guessing what I did wrong. (Comparing with Ubuntu 20.04, my Gentoo system has no systemd and no pulseaudio, no consolekit, and no policykit.) I leave this just for history, as I am currently in a war zone and so investigating this problem further is not in my priority list. :(

My hardware cannot run tensorflow precompiled by Ubuntu. However, some versions of tensorflow successfully compile and run in Gentoo: - all versions of tensorflow-2.5 fail to compile in Gentoo; - tensorflow-2.7.0 successfully compiled on 21-11-2021; - on 30-12-2021 recompilation of the same tensorflow-2.7.0 failed because of some changed dependencies; - I have not yet tried to compile tensorflow-2.8.0. Actually, I gave up trying to compile it and deleted it from my system. Moreover, I am not going to compile it in the near future as I am now in the war zone. > WRT to your video card, tensorflow does not require the use > of a GPU. In addition to the old CPU, I have quite an old video card, namely, ATI R4770. However, I still believe that it is possible to compile tensorflow so that it could run on my hardware. At least, I did it for tensorflow-2.7.0 on 21-11-2021.

Thank you for your reply, Mark. Unfortunately, you missed my previous message in this thread where I wrote that I do have Ubuntu 20.04 on the same computer. However, tensorflow fails to run on it because it is not compiled to be inconsistent with my videocard. So, Gentoo is my only option for this hardware.

Give you time to sort out the failure. Thank you for your reply, Dale. Yes, masking some new package can work in this case. However, it is not so easy as it may seem because it is not the new version of tensorflow that I should mask in my case as on the day when the tensorflow recompilation failed its version remained the same and only some of its dependencies were supposed to be upgraded. Of course, I may try this approach. However, tensorflow is not considered stable in gentoo tree and it has a lot of dependencies that are also not considered stable and should be unmasked. All this leads to a large number of possible choices on which packages to mask/unmask. So, playing with this is like playing in a casino with about 4 hours of compilation for each bet.

[gentoo-user] How to degrade Gentoo system with webrsync method?
I constantly have problems with updating/recompiling tensorflow. Sometimes, it compiles ok but most of the time it is not. The last time when it failed to recompile was on 30-12-2021. I reported this in the thread "tensorflow-2.5.0-r1 compilation failed" So, I decided to degrade my Gentoo system to the state in which it was on 12-12-2021, when my tensorflow was still ok, and froze it forever. The problem is that I do not know how to sync my Gentoo repository to the state it was on 12-12-2021. I use webrsync sync method via "maint -A sync" and would prefer to use the same sync method for degrading my Gentoo system. Can anybody, please, tell me how to do it using this sync method?

So, I am currently going to degrade my Gentoo system to the state it was in on 12-12-2021, when its last update was successful and froze it forever. The problem is that I do not know how to do it but I am going to post this question as a separate thread. (I am using webrsync method.)

[gentoo-user] tor-browser does not start any more
I have just noticed that the tor-browser I downloaded from its official site does not start any more. :( However, it started just a few weeks ago, before a few previous updates. Downloading its latest version has not changed anything in this respect.
[gentoo-user] Re: tensorflow-2.5.0-r1 compilation failed
Just for the history: all my attempts to compile any version of tensorflow-2.5 failed. However, yesterday I successfully compiled tensorflow-2.7.0. So, now I am afraid to update it any more in the future. :(

I have an AMD Phenom II X4 processor on that computer. The main problem, however, is that I get an error when compiling tensorflow in Gentoo. [gentoo-user] Re: tensorflow-2.5.0-r1 compilation failed
To make things worse, I've got an "Illegal instruction (core dumped)" error after installing and trying to run tensorflow from Ubuntu 20.04 which is installed on the same computer.

(And, if that will not help, > I will look for the hammer. :) So, I have removed both my SATA disks and tried to reboot: the system stalled without any error message at all. After that I installed gentookernel and re-created initramfs image (the previous one was created by the gentoo-kernel package before the removal of the SATA disks). After that, my Gentoo system successfully rebooted from the only (ATA) disk that remained. So, the problem is partially solved. However, I still do not understand the exact reason for it to appear. Most probably, both my SATA disks have connection problems as Oli Schmidt suggested from the very beginning, and because they both have it, it points to the motherboard that already had quite a bad track record. Unfortunately, I cannot diagnose it further, but later will try to experiment with attaching my SATA drives again. Also, I am going to test voltage outputs of my Enermax power supply unit when I will have such a possibility. It is quite old but was not used intensively. The other one, Thermaltake, is even older, was intensively used everyday, and still had no problems. (Both were bought with a big margin with respect to my computer's power demand). Thanks to all who replied to this thread.

Correction: Of course, in this case, I have not reinstalled gentoo-kernel. So, it may be that the links to my SATA drives are still in the initramfs that was created before. (The swap was one of my SATA drives.) However, I used another SATA drive to try the system from there (with swap on it) with the same failure to boot. > And the legacy operating system has absolutely no problem starting > from the ATA drive now. P.S. Currently, I am going to remove my SATA disks from the system and try to reboot it once again. If it will not help, I am going to recompile gentoo-kernel on the only remaining ATA disk. (The Gentoo system partition was on /dev/sda5.) > > What motherboard model is this? It is a good question. My motherboard is Gigabyte Ultra Durable GA-MA790FXT-UD5P and I had problems with it from the very beginning in the sense that it is quite often doesn't see my SATA disks on the first boot (though, on the second reboot it usually finds them). It is also quite often that it stops booting the legacy operating system and automatically reboots before showing a login screen. I bought it somewhere in 2006 together with a Gigabyte S-series GA-MA69GM-S2H motherboard, which I have been intensively using every day since then and never had any problem. In contrast, the Ultra Durable one has been used very rarely and for quite short periods of time. So, I do not expect it to wear off by now. > Probably BIOS disk controller setting needs to be set to either SATA AHCI or > something else? Well, I will look into but the problem is that it worked previously with the same BIOS settings. Below is an account of what I have done so far. First of all, I copied the system partition from my ATA to the SATA drive, updated the system, recompiled @system, openrc and gentoo-kernel, which unfortunately had no effect on the booting problem. At this stage, I started to seriously consider the suggestions above that it may be a hardware problem. So, I returned to the initial ATA system partition, updated the system there, switched off swap (in fstab), reinstalled grub on this disk and tried to boot from it. To my great surprise it failed to boot again complaining about links to two my SATA drives that it was not supposed to use at all! Of course, in this case, I have not reinstalled gentoo-kernel. So, may be, the links to my SATA drives are in the initramfs that still contains links to one of the other SATA drive. (Its swap was there.) However, I used another SATA drive to try the system from there. And the legacy operating system has absolutely no problem starting from the ATA drive now.

As to the new SATA drive, I formatted it anew and created ext4 file system with mkfs.ext4 --cc /dev/sdb2 which 4 times tested the partition writing and reading from it. Moreover, after chrooting into the partition, I do all update and emerge tasks, and it works fine. > On 2021-02-15 21:13, gevisz wrote: > > пн, 15 февр. 2021 г. в 20:59, Jude DaShiell : > >> > >> Check the date and time when you boot and if it isn't correct, you > >> probably have a dead battery on your motherboard. Legacy system shows incorrect time but I think that it is because of the dual-boot with Linux and not because of the battery issue. The date is still correct: Monday, February 15, 2021. [gentoo-user] Gentoo system suddenly failed to boot.
Yesterday, my relatively new install of Gentoo failed to boot with the following repeated messages: ata5.04: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 0) ata5.04: hard resetting link ata5.04: failed to resume link (SStatus 0 Scontrol 0) My first thought was that something is wrong with my old IDE (ATA) drive. (The Gentoo system partition was on /dev/sda5.) Nevertheless, I was able to boot from a flash drive with a live Gentoo CD and chroot into the Gentoo system partition of my IDE drive. So, I formatted a new SATA drive according to instructions given in Gentoo AMD64 Handbook, rsynced the corresponding IDE system partition into it by the following command: rsync -qaHAXS source_dir target_dir made the necessary changes to the corresponding fstab file, chrooted into the new system SATA partition, recompiled grub and installed it on the new disk. After all that I was able to boot the Gentoo system from the new partition. However, the booting process went as slow as hell, and at the end Xorg server failed to start. My next guess was that something went wrong with the last kernel I used to boot. So, I tried to boot using the previous kernel. However, this time the booting failed with almost the same messages as above: ata5.03: failed to resume link (SStatus 0 SControl 0) ata5.03: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 0) ata5.03: hard resetting link ata6.04: failed to resume link (SStatus 0 SControl 0) (Now, my new Gentoo system partition is on /dev/sdb2.) Shall I try to do something to fix it before reinstalling Gentoo anew? For example, I thought of booting with a live Gentoo flash drive, chrooting into the new system partition and recompiling @system. However, if it is not some package that is corrupted, it may be a waste of time. Or, maybe, @system may be narrowed to just a few packages needed at boot time? Shall I try to recreate initramfs, what in my case means re-emerging gentoo-kernel package? What do you think? P.S. Nevertheless, I still can successfully boot my very old legacy system from another partition of my IDE drive.

I have just compiled pycharm-community without bundled-jdk use flag and found out that now it can start (after setting export PYCHARM_JDK=`java-config -O` Moreover, I have found out that, in https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/PyCharm_Community_Edition, it is stated that "There are currently no USE flags available for dev-util/pycharm-community" which is definitely not true. So, I have filed the following bug about all this: https://bugs.gentoo.org/764926

[gentoo-user] pycharm-community crashed on the first start
I have just installed pycharm-community 2020.1.3 (marked stable) with its default settings (that is with +bundled-jdk use flag) on my newly installed Gentoo system and tried to start it using the following command: /opt/pycharm-community/bin/pycharm.sh Unfortunately, pycharm crashed on the start reporting the following error: # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: # # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x, pid=26676, tid=26725 # # JRE version: OpenJDK Runtime Environment (11.0.7+10) (build 11.0.7+10-b765.64) # Java VM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (11.0.7+10-b765.64, mixed mode, tiered, compressed oops, concurrent mark sweep gc, linux-amd64) # Problematic frame: # C 0x # # Core dump will be written. A longer error report from /home/gevis/java_error_in_PYCHARM_26676.log tells me nothing meaningful. :( I have no other Java JDK installed on my system. Is it a known problem? Shall I try to install pycharm with -bundled-jdk use flag?

Yes, I mount the same home partition (actually the separate disk) on both. And it still has some configuration files from a pre-Gentoo era :) as it has been used for Ubuntu 10 years ago. A separate partition with rarely used virtual machines is also mounted into a user directory. Also a common swap. ESP partition also exists but I never mounted it on old Gentoo and recently disabled it from mounting into a new one as well (after realized that it is not needed at all :).

[gentoo-user] Mystically disabled Ethernet connection
I am currently installing a new Gentoo system on a computer that is run by a Gentoo system that has not been updated since January 2019. Initially, I did so by chrooting to a newly formatted disk partition. My intention was to build everything in the chrooted environment and only then start to work in the new Gentoo system. However, when after installing Grub I rebooted into the new Gentoo system to find out if it works and rebooted again into the old Gentoo system to continue compilation in the chroot environment, I found out that my computer does not have a working ethernet connection to my home router. The "ip addr" command showed that my ethernet interface is down. I tried "ip link set up" and "ifconfig up" commands, where substitutes the correct, "predictable," name of my ethernet interface but it had not helped. Initially, I thought that something was wrong with my hardware, but when I rebooted into my new Gentoo system, the ethernet interface started to work again. Then, I rebooted back to the old system, and the ethernet interface stopped working again. It is very strange because I am sure that I have not changed anything on my old Gentoo system except for installing a new Grub onto the system disk. So, I have tried to reinstall (the old) Grub from my old system, but it has not helped either. Finally, I decided that it would be easier to complete installation of the new Gentoo system than to find out what is wrong with the old Gentoo system ethernet connection. So, I compiled xorg-x11, awesome, gvim, xfce4-terminal and are currently compiling firefox. Hopefully, tomorrow I will already have my new Gentoo system working. However, I am still wondering why the ethernet interface stopped working on my old Gentoo system. As, I have already said, I am pretty sure that I have not changed anything in its settings. Moreover, I have looked through the entire /etc directory of my old Gentoo system for config files that were modified during the installation of the new Gentoo system (suspecting that instead of the chrooted environment I put an installation command into the su terminal of my old Gentoo system or mistakenly edited a configuration file of my old Gentoo system) but found no config file that was modified during this period of time. So, I am not in a desperate need for help, but just interested to find out the reason for such a strange behaviour of the ethernet interface. P.S. I have read in the Gentoo Network management wiki that the connman, netifrc, dhcpcd, networkmanager, and openrc should not be run at the same time because it could lead to "unpredictable results" and checked if it is not the case on my old Gentoo system. No, on my old Gentoo system installed is only the openrc with the netifrc use flag and netifrc (which, as I guess, leads to only netifrc being used). But, anyway, it has been worked so for years and only now suddenly stopped.
[gentoo-user] XWindow appearing in a non-graphical tty. A bug or feature?
During the last 22 years, I got used to the setting when the XWindow system appeared on one of the "graphical" virtual terminals, mostly on tty6 or tty7. However, after installing a new Gentoo system with gentoo-kernel, I found out that the XWindow system started to appear in the same tty, where I started it using the startx command, shadowing all that was typed there including the messages from the xorg-server. So, I just wonder: "Is it a bug or a feature?" And where exactly can one configure it?

Nevertheless, the explanation why /var/db/repos/gentoo is better than /usr/portage is still welcomed. :)
[gentoo-user] Recommended location of the Gentoo ebuild repository
How would you comment the following quote from Gentoo Handbook "In most situations, /usr/ is to be kept big: not only will it contain the majority of applications, it typically also hosts the Gentoo ebuild repository (by default located at /var/db/repos/gentoo) which already takes around 650 MiB." that can be found here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Disks ? Have I correctly understood that the Gentoo ebuild repository default location is /var/db/repos/gentoo but virtually everybody relocate it to /usr/ during the installation process? Why not change its default location to /usr/ in this case? Where the Gentoo ebuild repository should be allocated? Why?

Thank you for your help. I turned on the computer, changed options snd cards_limit to 2 and ran aplay /usr/share/sound/alsa/*.wav (I have a different named wav files). There was a sound. Then I started Firefox and opened some youtube videos. The sound was present as well. Then I opened alsamixer. Some of the channels were muted and some had no full sound. Nevertheless, the sound had been present. I unmuted all the channels and set the full sound level on all of them. Then I again checked that the sound is present. It was. So, I rebooted the computer, ran alsamixer and made sure that all channels are unmuted and have full sound level. But this time the sound was absent exactly as I expected. Neither aplay nor Firefox produced any sound. I have already seen this behavior when I experimented with the kernel configuration about 8 months ago: the same kernel options, the same configuration files, all alsamixer channels are unmuted but after one reboot I have a sound and on another I have no sound. Any thoughts?

The SND_PCI option is switched on in my current generic kernel (gentoo-kernel-5.4.64) as well in the last tried configuration of gentoo-sources-4.19.86. Moreover, almost every possible option inside the section to which it points is compiled as a module. I do not know why snd_pci does not show itself after entering the lsmod command. Probably, because it is not a module but a section of the kernel config.

Hm, there is actually a bug with a similar error reported under the number 747547 on bugs.gentoo.org exactly on the same date when my first update of tensorflow failed. Probably, I just should confirm it and make a reference to this thread.

Here is the comparative table for your kernel parameters vs those of gentoo-kernel 5.4.64 and my last tried configuration in gentoo-sources-4.19.86: - CONFIG | 4.14 | 5.4.64 | 4.19.86 SND | y | m| y SND_TIMER | y | m| y SND_PCM | y | m| y SND_HWDEP | m | m| y SND_DRIVERS | y | y | y SND_PCI| y | y | y SND_HDA | m | m| y SND_HDA_INTEL| m| m| y SND_HDA_HWDEP | y | y | n SND_HDA_RECONFIG | y| y | y SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK | m | m | y SND_HDA_GENERIC | m | m | y SND_HDA_CORE| m | m | y SND_SPI | y | n | absent The last option is absent from my config file of gentoo-source-4.19.86. However, it seems that in gentoo-kernel-5.4-64 it also means nothing because it leads to an empty section even if it is chosen. So, it seems that at least the configuration for kernel 5.4.64 should work. However, it does not.

However, I do it manually using emerge -vp tensorflow As the result, so far I've got the following list: >=sci-libs/tensorflow-2.2.0-r2::gentoo ~amd64 >=net-libs/grpc-1.28::gentoo ~amd64 >=sys-apps/hwloc-2::gentoo ~amd64 >=dev-python/astunparse-1.6.3::gentoo ~amd64 >=dev-python/gast-0.3.3::gentoo ~amd64 >=dev-python/google-pasta-0.1.8::gentoo ~amd64 >=net-libs/google-cloud-cpp-0.10.0::gentoo ~amd64 >=sci-visualization/tensorboard-2.3.0::gentoo ~amd64 >=sci-libs/tensorflow-estimator-2.3.0::gentoo ~amd64 =dev-util/bazel-3*::gentoo ~amd64 >=dev-python/grpcio-tools-1.28::gentoo ~amd64 ~dev-python/grpcio-1.32.0::gentoo ~amd64 >=dev-python/google-auth-oauthlib-0.4.1::gentoo ~amd64 =dev-cpp/abseil-cpp-20200225*:=::gentoo ~amd64 >=dev-libs/protobuf-3.13.0:=::gentoo ~amd64 However, now I have got the following WARNING: One or more updates/rebuilds have been skipped due to a dependency conflict: dev-libs/protobuf:0 (dev-libs/protobuf-3.13.0:0/24::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) USE="zlib -emacs -examples -static-libs -test" ABI_X86="(64) -32 (-x32)" conflicts with ~dev-libs/protobuf-3.12.4 required by (dev-python/protobuf-python-3.12.4-r1:0/23::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) USE="" ABI_X86="(64)" PYTHON_TARGETS="python3_7 -python3_6 -python3_8 (-python3_9)" I am going to solve it by adding the line >=dev-python/protobuf-python-3.13.0-r1::gentoo ~amd64 (and it indeed solves the dependency conflict) However, in this case I am quite close to my previous configuration when compilation of tensorflow failed. Now, I am going to compile. On my computer, it will also take a lot of time. So, I will report the result till the end of the next week. :)
[gentoo-user] No sound. Please, help!
At different times during the last one and a half years, I tried to make sound work on my new Gentoo install on a computer with Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P motherboard and MSI ATI Radeon R4770 graphic card. Previously, I successfully solved the sound problems in Gentoo either with alsamixer or by compiling the right driver into the kernel but on this computer these two approaches failed so far. In my penultimate attempt to solve this problem, I spent no less than one week trying to compile the right driver into the then 4th Linux kernel with no result. At the beginning, I managed to get a sound from this computer after some kernel configurations but they turned out to be unstable in the sense that later the same kernel configurations resulted in no sound. (I have used git to control all my experiments with the kernel configurations, so I am quite sure that configurations of the kernel for which I sometimes got the sound and later did not was indeed the same.) My first explanation to this phenomena was that after recompiling a kernel I also have to recompile xorg-server and some sound related packages. So I have tried this with no result again. And, of course, I have always used alsamixer to make sure that no sound channels are muted. Finally, I decided that I just cannot find the right combination of sound drivers and gave up because at that time I could not spend on this more than one week. But last month I found out about the gentoo-kernel package and decided to try once more. I was almost sure that, after installing this package, I will finally get the sound. So, I have installed the latest, 5.4.64, version of this package. As a result, the computer rebooted in the new Linux kernel and everything worked and still works like a charm except for the sound as it is still absent. :( So I definitely (and desperately) need your help and promise to follow all your suggestions. (But, please, take into account that I can compile on this computer only during weekends.) As the following command shows lspci | grep "Audio" 00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) 01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV710/730 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4000 series] This computer has two sound devices. The first of them, SBx00 Azalia, is probably built into the motherboard, and it is where I am trying to get a sound from. The second one is probably built into the Radeon graphic card and I am not going to use it at all unless it can output the sound through the motherboard audio jacks. My current kernel configuration is exactly the same as in the gentoo-kernel-5.4.64 package as I have not changed anything there. And finally: installed on the same computer legacy operating system never had any sound problems.
[gentoo-user] tensorflow-2.3.1 failed to compile"
A week ago, on October 10, 2020, tensorflow-2.3.1 gracefully failed to compile with the following ERROR: sci-libs/tensorflow-2.3.1::gentoo failed (compile phase) and a few weeks before tensorflow-2.2.0-r2 caused a dependency conflict during a regular system update, so I updated my system excluding tensorflow and on October 10 tried, after another update excluding tensorflow, tried to update it to the last available version. Before doing it, I also unmasked some of its most recent dependencies (I think it was protobuf-3.13.0) to avoid dependency conflict. Any thoughts on how to proceed with this obstacle other than to depclean tensorflow and try to reinstall it again? The problem is that all versions of tensorflow and almost all of its dependencies are masked by default. So it is almost impossible to guess which versions of them should be unmasked for the successful compilation. Is there any hope that in the future at least some version of tensorflow will be considered "stable" in Gentoo?

Anyway, thank you once more for your help!

Yes, after adding dbus to default runlevel, the xorg-server started. Thank you. Still do not understand how it worked without it before. Thank you for your reply and the tips. /run/dbus directory does not exist on the computer where xorg-server does not start, which probably means that it does not run. (At the same time, /run/dbus/system_bus_socket does exit on another my Gentoo box that I last updated 1.5 years ago and that has no problem starting xorg-server. It still has default/linux/amd64/17.0/desktop (stable) profile.) Also, I cannot find a link to dbus from any of my /etc/runlevels on my problem computer though such a link exists from /etc/runlevels/default/dbus to /etc/init.d/dbus on my old Gentoo installation. On both my Gentoo installations exist /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/80-dbus file that promises to launch a session dbus instance. When installing my new Gentoo installation, I tried to make it as close to the old one as it was possible, and it is strange to me that the new one does not have a dbus startup in its runlevels. (As far as I remember, in both cases I needed dbus to switch keyboard layout in Awesome, and it did on both systems before the last update.) Probably, my first try should be to add dbus to the default runlevel on my new Gentoo installation. > 2) Please post the full logs of the X server, usually at > `/var/log/Xorg.0.log`. > 3) The output of `emerge --info x11-base/xorg-server` would be nice. Thank you for the tip and the links. On both my systems (the old and the new one) I do have elogind installed as it is needed for Skype. On the old system, xorg-server still does not have an elogind use flag, while the new one has it and it is set on. > From the relevant ebuild [2]: > > if use systemd || use elogind; then > XORG_CONFIGURE_OPTIONS+=( > "--enable-systemd-logind" > "--disable-install-setuid" > "$(use_enable suid suid-wrapper)" > ) > else > XORG_CONFIGURE_OPTIONS+=( > "--disable-systemd-logind" > "--disable-suid-wrapper" > "$(use_enable suid install-setuid)" > ) > fi > > [1] https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/issues/554 > [2] > https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/tree/x11-base/xorg-server/xorg-server-1.20.9.ebuild#n179 > > -- > > Ashley Dixon > suugaku.co.uk > > 2A9A 4117 > DA96 D18A > 8A7B B0D2 > A30E BF25 > F290 A8AA >

[gentoo-user] Xorg does not start after a recent system update.
After a system update on 18.09.2020 of my Gentoo system, the xorg-server failed to start with the following (last) error message: dbus-core: error connecting to system bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound (Failed to connect to socket /run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory) Last time I updated my system on 8.08.2020 and everything worked fine. I use startx to start xorg-server and I do not use systemd. I still use the 4.19.86 kernel which is already out of Gentoo tree without masking the newer ones. May it be the reason?

[gentoo-user] Unable to plot in Julia REPL.
After installing julia-1.3.0, I have tried to plot(rand(100)) in Julia REPL as described in a tutorial but got an error message which basicly says that julia cannot find libQtGui.so.4 shared library. I googled the error message and found it on Julia discourse forum: https://discourse.julialang.org/t/unable-to-plot-in-repl/13535 The author of the original question got exactly the same error message while trying to run the same command in Julia REPL installed on OpenSuse. The solution for him was to libqt4 package. Can anybody say me which package I should emerge in Gentoo to get the same result?

Anyway, it did not helped to emerge julia because of the following: # emerge julia These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! [ebuild UD ] sci-libs/cholmod-2.1.2 [3.0.13] USE="-lapack* -metis% -minimal%" [ebuild N ] sci-libs/umfpack-5.6.2 USE="cholmod -doc -static-libs" [ebuild N~] dev-lang/julia-1.4.0-r1 !!! However, it is also possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if that will solve this conflict automatically. For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

[gentoo-user] No keyserver available
I have a long standing "gpg can't check signature: No public key" error while running # emerge-webrsync It appears because the webrsync-gpg feature has been set in my make.conf however I do not want to switch it off. The app-crypt/gentoo-keys is installed, so it is not the reason for above error. I have just tried to download gentoo pgp keys manually with the command gpg --keyserver hkps://keys.gentoo.org --recv-keys 13EBBDBEDE7A12775DFDB1BABB572E0E2D182910 and got the following error message: gpg: keyserver receive failed: No keyserver available Can anybody explain me how to fix this?

Thank you for sharing your kernal configuration. Comparing it to mine, I have found only two differences. Namely, my kernel configuration had: CONFIG_DRM_VGEM=n (you had "y" here) CONFIG_DRM_UDL=n (you had "m" here) I consired the second one irrelevant. So, I have changed the first one and recompiled everything you mentioned. (VIDEO_CARDS variable in my make.conf alsowas the same.) However, after reboot, I have got the same startx error message. Looking onto dmesg, I found the following messages related to Radeon video card: [1.096815] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled. [1.097070] [drm] initializing kernel modesetting (RV740 0x1002:0x94B3 0x1002:0x0D00 0x00). ... [1.098286] [drm] radeon: 512M of VRAM memory ready [1.098341] [drm] radeon: 1024M of GTT memory ready. [gentoo-user] startx does not work for AMD/ATI Radion HD 4770
I have installed Gentoo on my second desktop computer with Gigabyte MA790FXT-UD5P motherboard, AMD Phenome II X4 945 processor, and AMD/ATI Radion HD 4770 video card. However, currently I have only the command line: startx fails to start X11 reporting the following error: ... (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported. (EE) Fatal server error: (EE) no screens found (EE) ... (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file. ... xinit: unable to connect to X server: Bad file descriptor. and this is despite of the fact that I configured 4.19.86 gentoo kernel following instructions from https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide and https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon#Feature_support Namely, I set EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR = /lib/firmware EXTRA_FIRMWARE = radeon/R700_rlc.bin, RV740_smc.bin, and RV710_uvd.bin DRM = y and DRM_RADEON = y as described in the second link above. I have just tried to start skypeforlinux in user mode now: no error messages and ~/.config/skypeforlinux/logs contains only the follows line: Server response:
[gentoo-user] Skype does not start again (in user mode)
Just yesterday I have installed skypeforlinux on my Gentoo box and found out that it does not start from user command line but does start from super user and moreover works quite well with that power. Does anybody have some idea how to make skypeforlinux to start from usual user command line beyond the general "something-wrong-with-permissions" wisdom? P.S. The user is in the video group.

I had an impression that you are a member of the Gentoo council. Now I have checked this and found out that you are not. So, I should agree with you that this my e-mail probably will not do much to fix the issue (especially the one with the bug). So, I should probably sent a similar e-mail to all Gentoo council members. > I don't use webrsync which is probably why I didn't personally notice > this issue - I'm guessing it uses a different key than git but I > haven't checked. Yes, they uses different ways of verifying the snapshots.

Ok, not app-crypt/gentoo-keys package but app-crypt/openpgp-keys-gentoo-release package. Does it matter? The fact is that today emerge-webrsync said me that the protage snapshot signing key expired and because of it it cannot download and verify the daily portage snapshot. I had no choice than to install app-crypt/gkeys package and use it to get new portage snapshot signing keys. Only after that emerge-webrsync finally was able to download and verify the daily portage snapshot. After that I have found out that a new app-crypt/openpgp-keys-gentoo-release package was released on 2 January 2019 when the previous portage signing keys already expired. The similar situation was just a half year ago. To add to it, the following bug with Gentoo documentation I have posted yet on 24 November 2018 is still unfixed: https://bugs.gentoo.org/671816 Just to remind, the said bug is about the fact that it is impossible to install Gentoo the way as it is described in the Gentoo Handbook just because the same emerge-webrsync cannot download and verify the daily portage snapshot just after stage3 is untarred. What else shall I "investigate" before stating that Gentoo neglects security issues? No wonder that Gentoo GitHub account was also hacked last year!
[gentoo-user] Portage snapshot signing key expired again
Just tonight I tried to update my portage snapshot by emerge-webrsync command and found out that the portage snapshot signing key expired again without being properly updated by app-crypt/gentoo-keys update before its expiration as described here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Working/Features#Validated_Portage_tree_snapshots On the other side, app-crypt/gkeys is marked by ~ in my architecture (amd64). So, it is impossible to update the portage snapshot signing key without using non-recommended package. The same situation happened just half a year ago. Is it only me who thinks that Gentoo must care more about security?

Would you like to explain why? I had once a 40GB HDD failure and I have managed to restore all the data on it by repeatedly putting it in a fridge what enabled me to dd its partions for about 10 minutes or so. But in that case the partitions were relatively small and the disk mounted quick and easy. Now imagine that have failed a 4TB HDD disk that is part of much bigger LVM volume. Moreover, suppose that it is impossible to restore that part of the failed HDD disk that indexes all that LVM volume...

Odds are, we both > have the same dependencies installed so not sure how to figure out if it > is one of those. I should clarify: I experience the said download problem only in Firefox, never with Chromium or Google-chrome. I have mentioned Chromium and Google-chrome only to indicate that my habit of opening download manager became so unconscious that I try to open download manager even in Chromium and Google-chrome, when it is not needed. Luckily, the hot keys for opening download manager in Firefox and Chromium/Google-chrome do not coincide, so I just end up opening something else and then realize that download manager is not needed. I never used LVM as I believe that it increases the chance of loosing all the information on hard disks. And yes, I do use ext4 as it is the default file system for Linux. P.S. Most often, I download html pages and have noticed that the said download problem does not arise when I download html pages in the so called "read" view, that is after pressing that little book icon in the Firefox URL address line, whereas downloading the same pages from a usual default view, with a lot of additional files, almost sure leads to the said download problem.

What does one call this problem??? > I experience similar problems with downloading files in Firefox for quite a long time. I cannot say for how long time exactly, but estimating it from memory: for about a few years. Yes, t is quite annoying but currently I have already got the habit to open download manager every time I download a file, stop downloading it and then restart again. (I even try to do the same automatically while using other web browsers like chromium or google-chrome. :) However, I believe that it has nothing to do with "the newer Firefox versions" as I still use Firefox version 52.9.0 (compiled without clang) and all these troubles with downloading files started even on much more earlier versions.
