Hi,

You have introduced a new client bug.

The error msg reads;

SteamStartup() failed: SteamStartup(0xf,0x0012E5BC) failed with error 1:
failed to take master pipe connection lock

When attempting to shutdown steam.exe it complaints first all games need
to be shutdown. There is *no* game process running (no hl2.exe present
in processes list)

The steam.exe process needs a manual kill before it can be used again.

Cheers,

Re: [hlds] Deleted the L4D Survival Pack cvar email

2009-04-21 Thread Aj Collins
I'm a developer at Valve who is working on the Left 4 Dead Survival pack
update. We've made several changes to server operation that we'd like to
give our server operators a heads up on.

Since Left 4 Dead will now support three different game modes, we removed
the console variable director_no_human_zombies and added a new variable
called mp_gamemode which can be set to coop, versus and survival.
This variable is set by lobby reservation, so a normal server running in
lobby mode will require no changes by the server operator. If you are
running in LAN mode without lobbies, you will need to set mp_gamemode before
you load a map. For example, use mp_gamemode survival; map
l4d_sv_lighthouse to load the new Lighthouse map in Survival mode.

We have extended sv_gamestypes to also include survival. The default
value is now coop, versus, survival. This may cause issues for some servers
that have a lot of tags in addition to the defaults. We realize this is
problem and adjusted sv_showtags to show the truncated tags to help server
operators see if they have reached the 63 character limit.

The tags issue will be fixed in the forthcoming third party campaign
matchmaking update. We have extended the master servers so heartbeats will
be sent as two distinct packets, one containing the existing server
heartbeat, and another containing additional game data. This game data
will contain all the matchmaking server tags such as sv_gametypes, and the
list of third party campaign missions installed. This third party campaign
list will be used by people searching for servers with third party campaigns
installed. Server operators will install the VPK file of the campaign that
includes the maps (and associated models, etc) as well as a mission
description file that describes the campaign and its name used for
matchmaking. We hope that as various third party campaigns become popular,
more server operators will install them giving a larger base for players to
find servers for those campaigns.

I think it's more of a personal preference. Some people say that linux gives a
very slight boost, and linux does have the -autoupdate feature, but other than
that they are pretty identical. I prefer windows, since I can get around in a
windows box much quicker than I can in a linux box.

Thank you,

Re: [hlds] Better Windows Server for HLDS?

2009-04-21 Thread Zach Tate
I would first try to just get each server to run on one physical box,
that will cut down on power, and space in a data center. (That is if I
understood how you have your current setup as, one box per game server).
You can run more than one game server on a physical server. It just
depends on how powerful your system is to determine just how many game
servers can run.

As far as Linux vs. Windows, it just depends on how good you are in
Linux or Windows. I would personally go with which ever you are able to
get around in like Alec said. I find windows to be easier, but Linux to
be more fun and interesting. Just make sure you know how to fix Linux
is something does go wrong.

Good luck,

well, this is my use case:

currently, i run HLDS in Linux (1 machine for server one / 1 machine for

but i've a plans for virtualize one DC for run all servers (four that i

Hi.. thanks.. i think windows is better to use.

i've currenty one machine, with one physical OS running HLDS/cstrike/32

and other machine, with one physical OS running other 3 HLDS with: 16/14/12

what is better:
1: i run all HLDS in one phsyical OS?
2: virtualize two (or more) virtual OS and run the HLDS separately?

wich a problem that i run all HLDS in one physical OS?

last question (hehe):
consider that i've get one DC for running this servers (list down), wich
configuration that i would need for run all servers, with no problems?

Re: [hlds] Better Windows Server for HLDS?

2009-04-21 Thread Kveri
Hi,

your first question what is better I would say 1., because
virtualisation adds overhead.

your second question: I would say Intel Q6600 or Q9450 with 4 gigs of
ram should be enough (with linux and right kernel config :).

[hlds] TF2 Non-Unlockable Mode.

2009-04-21 Thread Greg Williams
Many people in our community are so frustrated with the TF2 unlockables that
they talked me into asking.

Anyone know if there is a way to have TF2 they way it was released. No
unlockables. The game was damn near perfect, but with the balance issues of the
unlockable releases, TF2 has not been the same.

The only unlockable that has imbalance problems would be the Scout's Bonk,

I have tried the VM solution and it didn't really work all that great.
I was using VMWare ESX server as well, and you just have to much
overhead to justify it. I would think you could easily get away with a
3Ghz dual core processor (xeon) or a cheaper quad core (xeon). I would
say use Intel over AMD. If you run 4 Gig of RAM you should be fine, and
make sure you run your OS and game servers on different hard drives. As
far as bandwidth I was say if you were to fill those servers up most of
the time you should think about 6-7Megbit at least. That way you don't
have bandwidth issues.

There's quite a few of us here who host game servers in a virtual
environment with nary a problem. If I'm not mistaken, trashedgamers is a
completely virtual environment, with about 5 32 slot tf2 servers. You're
up Karl :)

I run my game servers under both ESX and ESXi (my stateside VM's are in
ESX, my local VM's are ESXi). It performs so well that my extra small
community has no idea they're virtualized. :P

Re: [hlds] TF2 Non-Unlockable Mode.

2009-04-21 Thread CLAN RCR
Well.. To my knowledge there is currently no way to restrict most of the
special weapons due to their names being the same as the default weapon
(case in point, the bone/uber saw. statistically, they're named the same so
if you restrict one using a weapon restrict plugin, you loose both. The same
goes for the Scout bat/sandman.

Of course, correct me if I'm wrong.. But I've recently been looking into
restricting certain buildables, and ran into a similar situation.

Your best bet is probably a plugin, but I'm unsure about the

Re: [hlds] Better Windows Server for HLDS?

2009-04-21 Thread CLAN RCR
Within the Windows platform I've heard that Server 2003 is better then 2008,
but I'm running 2008 and am really not having any issues.

Just make sure that the hardware (motherboard) you're using supports High
Precision Event Timer (HPET) and you'll be far better off with that enabled
no matter what Windows OS you use then the differences that exist between
2003 and 2008 server versions.

I would first try to just get each server to run on one physical box,
that will cut down on power, and space in a data center. (That is if
 I
understood how you have your current setup as, one box per game
 server).
You can run more than one game server on a physical server. It just
depends on how powerful your system is to determine just how many game
  servers can run.

As far as Linux vs. Windows, it just depends on how good you are in
Linux or Windows. I would personally go with which ever you are able
 to
get around in like Alec said. I find windows to be easier, but Linux
 to

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Update Released

2009-04-21 Thread David Kellaway
It's not a config or plugin issue, the Windows release is just broken.
I've done a reinstall and verify_all update to confirm this. Not only
that, but it's been broken for hours without any sort of indication of
why this has happened or when we can expect it fixed.

This is far from the first time this exact same problem has happened,
too. Does anyone at Valve even bother to run these updates on a spare
PC and check they start properly before releasing?

Actually, I can still do this. If I click reload, then keep on
meeleing, it finishes the reload action. I would think this is a
mistake.

Re: [hlds] Better Windows Server for HLDS?

2009-04-21 Thread Zach Tate
You shouldn't have any issues having 6 servers on one physical box/OS.
When talking about installing the OS on one HD and then running all of
the game servers on another I mean actual HDs. So you need to have 2
hard drives in the system for the best performance. Not 1 HD with 2
partitions.

I personally like OpenSuse, Ubuntu, and CentOS. Everyone will have
different kinds of input on this, but those are my favorite for servers.

BTW about virtual servers, I have noticed when I would do something on
another VM it would cause weird things to happen on the game servers.
But having it as a virtual OS had its upsides, like managing it.

*I would say use Intel over AMD. If you run 4 Gig of RAM you should be
fine, and
make sure you run your OS and game servers on different hard drives.*

about HD, i will install OS in one HD and all servers in other HD?
and when you say HD, you say partition or really other HD?

about linux, wich dist. you recommend?

There's quite a few of us here who host game servers in a virtual
environment with nary a problem. If I'm not mistaken, trashedgamers is
a
completely virtual environment, with about 5 32 slot tf2 servers.
You're
 up Karl :)

I run my game servers under both ESX and ESXi (my stateside VM's are
in
ESX, my local VM's are ESXi). It performs so well that my extra small
community has no idea they're virtualized. :P

I have tried the VM solution and it didn't really work all that great.
I was using VMWare ESX server as well, and you just have to much
overhead to justify it. I would think you could easily get away with
a
3Ghz dual core processor (xeon) or a cheaper quad core (xeon). I
would
say use Intel over AMD. If you run 4 Gig of RAM you should be fine,
and
make sure you run your OS and game servers on different hard drives.
As

far as bandwidth I was say if you were to fill those servers up most
of
the time you should think about 6-7Megbit at least. That way you
don't
 have bandwidth issues.

i've currenty one machine, with one physical OS running

and other machine, with one physical OS running other 3 HLDS with:
 16/14/12

 what is better:
1: i run all HLDS in one phsyical OS?
2: virtualize two (or more) virtual OS and run the HLDS separately?

wich a problem that i run all HLDS in one physical OS?

 last question (hehe):
consider that i've get one DC for running this servers (list down),
wich
configuration that i would need for run all servers, with no problems?
 (processor/memory/bandwidth)
 - sv1: cstrike/30 slots;
 - sv2: cstrike/16 slots;

I would first try to just get each server to run on one physical
box,
that will cut down on power, and space in a data center. (That is
if
 I
understood how you have your current setup as, one box per game
 server).
You can run more than one game server on a physical server. It
just
depends on how powerful your system is to determine just how many
game
  servers can run.

As far as Linux vs. Windows, it just depends on how good you are in
Linux or Windows. I would personally go with which ever you are
able
 to
get around in like Alec said. I find windows to be easier, but
Linux
 to
be more fun and interesting. Just make sure you know how to fix
Linux
  is something does go wrong.

  Good luck,

Re: [hlds] TF2 Non-Unlockable Mode.

2009-04-21 Thread Matthew Gottlieb
They use it for openings in PL maps as defense. A few scouts can stun
enough of the enemy team to push in and wipe them out before they pull
off a starting push. This give the offense more time to prepare and
push in.

Limiting scouts to 2 can fix this (for the most part).

  Windows 2003 servers
Have run flawlessly since L4D original release
  Updated with DLC fully tonight
Can see them in HLSW but can not add them to favourites in
  Openserverbrowser
  menu

  Server.cfg
sv_search_key (with no quotes around the key)
  sv_gametypes coop,versus,survival

  Launch
  -console -game left4dead +map l4d_hospital01_apartment +ip 69.28.221.148
  -port
  27065 +sv_lan 0

  Sv_search_key isnt working
Get message that there are no dedicated servers available, do I want to
  start
  server locally

  :(

Is there something I need to add to the server.cfg?
