If the rear struts don't leak fluid (ie don't leave significant
puddles) they are fine. The internal dampers cannot wear out, the only
wear items are the seals (resulting in leaks) and the balljoints at
the bottom (resulting in creaks). Balljoints are available separately
IIRC.

You should be able to just press the locking pin out and remove the cap, then

No. the issues were mostly minor and cosmetic, and have likely already been
fixed by now. I had a 2001, that I sold the Kaleb when I dumped all the old
cars last year. It was fine.

I had an old 1973 series III. Was a cool vehicle. Aluminum body doesn't
rust but frames did on older ones. I also had a GMC Jimmy but LR was
better esp off road in snow. YMMV
