via canoe as much as i like 24/7. doesn't this kind of indicate that the

which (IMO) generally creates more problems/cost for the good

[MBZ] OT: Jetta oil change

2013-09-21 Thread Curt Raymond
Heres another reason to love your MB.

Last night I decided it was high time to change the oil in the Jetta. So I
jacked it up high and got a jack stand under it, then got under there and
removed the underbody belly pan thing. Got my drain pan in place and then had
to crawl back out to get a 19mm wrench. Who uses a 19mm bolt on an oil pan?
Got the oil draining and went after the filter, its a can filter (not a
canister filter like an MB uses, what are the self-contained ones called?) at
the front of the car pointing down and slightly rearward (its a weird
position). I can barely get my hands on it from above, from below its better
but still bad. Managed to get it unscrewed from below which I was worried about
and navigated down and out without pouring any on me. Its quite a large filter
and the one coming off was Mann. My replacement is Car Quest but I intend to
run a fairly short change as a cleanout before going to a longer duration.

I filled the new filter with oil (Car Quest 5w40 synthetic, again its a short
change, I'll pull a sample at 5,000 miles) and as I navigated it up into place
realized I shouldn't have filled it more than 3/4 full. Had to take it down and
wipe it off because I couldn't turn it with all the oil on it... There is a
special place in hell for the idiot that designed this system. The mk4 Jetta
has a canister filter which is a much better system.

While I was down there I figured I'd check the level in the transmission, it
was louder than I'd like. Thats also mildly annoying because of an AC line
right in the way, fortunately I had the HUGE (bigger than MB differential)
allen key needed. I stuck my finger in the hole and... nothing. Stuck my finger
farther in the hole, nothing. Wiggled it around some, OH! theres some oil.
Oooh, better do something about that.

Today is cut and weld day, I want to deal with the rust holes under the
driver's side. Before I do that I'll go find some GL4 fluid and get the trans
taken care of...

Kalib, I'm in the lower Hudson Valley, about 70 miles north of NYC.

I drove the car to the restoration shop that did my rust repair and repaint
about 5 years ago. Including new front fenders, a crapload of new trim and a
new trunk lid, as the old one was I rough shape. Probably dumped $6K+ into the
car that year.

Insco's from both parties did estimates, probably within 10% of each other,
around $3.5K. Shop left me a msg last night they already has a tail light
assembly, and looking for a rear deck but still need my okay to do the work.
Wilton, thanks for the offer; if I look at this one next week and it's a POS,
I'll contact you. Shop said insco would cover repair up to the vehicle's value.

My concern was they were going to value the car around $2K and total it. They
value is about $7K, so right now, the numbers look good. Don't know if I can
just take the $3.5K check and keep/part out the vehicle, or if that's even an
option, which was a thought, if I wanted to get rid of it, knowing the model's
stellar reliability reputation. g

If TSA and DHS were sports teams... they would both have set records for
losing streaks.

Billions spent.. Millions of hours of delays caused to good citizens...
Billions of increased costs to airlines and airports with extra time lost

ZERO TERRORIST CAUGHT IN 12 YEARS losing streak??? By my measure.

Anyone ever fly El Al Israel airlines? Or go through Israel 's check

are looking for TERRORISTS, not 84 yr. old cancer patients wearing depends.

Our security check points are run by poorly trained monkeys, lead by
politically appointed fools who couldn't manage their way out of a wet
paper bag, with a national security planning agency that never saw combat,
with congressional oversight by elected professional fools whose only
coherent daily thought is what can I do to get re-elected.

At this point, my only satisfaction in dealing with them when I fly is to
take Exlax before I go to the airport so when they do the anal probe, I
have something for them to find.

I feel safe now... don't you... Wonder how the Boston bombers were missed?
Wonder how the 911 guys were overlooked.. or the original Trade Towers were
able to do their attack? I mean.. we spend billions on... wait.. Ohh..

This is significant, particularly when you recall that the crash of
2008/2009 was purely a banking crisis. Sure, lots of folks bought houses
they couldn't afford (only after banks made foolish loans with Freddie/Fanny
cheerleading all the way). But the taxpayer didn't bail out those
homeowners, taxpayers bailed out the banks and a few businesses (like GM)
that were more bank than automaker. Domestically, it may not make much
difference immediately because dollars (no matter how many are printed)are
still legal tender. But when dollars become worth less internationally, the
cost of imported things (like petro and all consumer goods) will skyrocket.
That, in turn, will ignite domestic inflation. Even if the US develops gobs
of domestic energy, it will be exported.

I'm curious to see how the 75w90 is but spent all day today cutting and

won't rain too bad and I can get the rest (well the driver's side anyway) done

I haven't seen a transaxle that took GL anything since my 1977 Saab (and
the SAE 70 originally specified for that car was superceded by 5W30).

Re: [MBZ] OT: Jetta oil change

2013-09-21 Thread Scott Ritchey

My Mercedes Diesel (617.) is the easily easiest and cleanest oil change of
any vehicle I have ever owned, including yard equipment. I use a topsider
which seems to remove more oil than the drain plug.

On a semi-related note, I have an Outback where you have to unscrew the oil
filter from under the car. The filter is surrounded by exhaust pipes and
oil gets all over these pipes. And then it really smells when they heat up.
I found that if I cut the bottom out of a plastic soda bottle which is
slightly bigger (in diameter) than the filter, It made a great way to catch
this stray oil. I pass the socket extension through the mouth of the
inverted, bottomless bottle, snap an end-type filter wrench on the extension
and hold the bottle up against the block as I loosen the filter. The bottle
acts as a funnel to guide spilled oil into the drip pan.

[MBZ] OT but interesting

2013-09-21 Thread Rich Thomas
So back when an a-bomb was accidentally dropped right near where Milton
lives. Yesterday's WSJ had a book review of a new book about bomb
accidents, mostly missile explosions that expelled the warheads, and
caused various other problems. It also mentioned this incident and
suggested the package was still where it fell and buried itself, though
I find that hard to believe. Anyway, now a report saying NC almost got
nuked then. I guess Milt would be living outside the exclusion zone, or
maybe in full Mad Max mode by now.

Re: [MBZ] question that appears political

2013-09-21 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Well, for one thing, trains don't fall out of the sky and kill everyone when
disabled by a small explosion. But you are correct that the kind of
security thinking that fuels the TSA is a kind of security theater. The
problem is that the focus is on stopping things rather than people of ill
intent. It is easier to train people (and have machines) that can spot
knives, guns and explosives than it is to train people to spot people with
nefarious intent.

Don't forget that under the current administration the TSA employs lots of
the otherwise marginally employable.

homeowners, taxpayers bailed out the banks and a few businesses (like GM)
that were more bank than automaker. Domestically, it may not make much
difference immediately because dollars (no matter how many are printed)are
still legal tender. But when dollars become worth less internationally, the
cost of imported things (like petro and all consumer goods) will skyrocket.
That, in turn, will ignite domestic inflation. Even if the US develops
 gobs

[MBZ] 240D Mystery Bolt: Update

2013-09-21 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Sincere thanks to all of you who shared your experiences and offered advice
on this issue; especially Mike Canfield who sent me a replacement bolt.
After some delays and struggles we got the new bolt in. This was
accomplished with the aid of a 7X16 lathe, a beer can, some crazy glue and
some shorter than standard M42 drill bits.

I plan to do a write-up with some photos in order to help any unfortunate
future victims of the broken crankshaft bolt.

Subject: 240D Mystery Bolt

Hi All:

My son was driving his 3-pedal 1980 240D ( with about 300K mi.) yesterday
when the car began to run warm. Suddenly he heard a loud PLINK, and
something falling out of the engine compartment. Then the engine overheated
and he began to lose coolant. The following very large (18mm thread) broken
10.9 bolt with 3 thick washers was recovered:

http://my.opera.com/gfior/albums/show.dml?id=14664462

Aside from running very hot the engine seems to run normally.

Does any of you have an idea what happened and where this bolt came from?

He will be driving SWMBO's TDI Jetta until we sort this out.

TIA,

Greg

Re: [MBZ] OT but interesting

2013-09-21 Thread WILTON
It is amazing the number of supposedly well-educated people who keep writing
books about the 1961 incident 12 mile from here but evidently don't know how
to count (each one comes up with a different number of switches - usually
sprinkled between 4 and 9) and can't seem to understand that all of the
bombs' internal switches, devices and timers, including the ARM/SAFE
switches worked mechanically and electrically exactly as they were designed
and built to work. They were all designed and built to allow/produce a nuke
det only if the bombs were released under very specific conditions of
altitude and airspeed. The breakup of the airplane caused the bombs to
separate from it as if they had been deliberately released - the altitude
and airspeed conditions were met. On one bomb, all of the switches,
including ARM/SAFE switch worked. Firing signal was produced, but it could
not get past the ARM/SAFE switch, which, of course, the crew
radar-navigator/bombardier had not armed and never would have without a
properly authenticated go-code/order. So one bomb did not produce nuke det
because ARM/SAFE switch was SAFE.

In the second bomb, all of the switches, timers, etc., except those that
were precluded by other physical factors (severed parachute static line and
premature impact with ground) also worked as designed and built. When first
found in the impact crater, the ARM/SAFE switch for this bomb appeared to be
ARMED, but detailed analysis by Sandia Corp. found that only the case was
damaged making it to merely appear to be armed but was, in fact, SAFE. This
bomb did not produce nuke det 'cause it was destroyed upon impact with
ground before fusing/firing sequence was complete; ARM/SAFE switch was also
SAFE.

In addition to the internal switches, timers and devices being designed and
built to allow/produce a nuclear detonation ONLY under certain specific
conditions of airspeed and altitude, they were also designed and built to
prevent an accidental nuclear detonation while undergoing ground
maintenance, and handling, routine transport and any other time not
deliberately intended. Airspeed and altitude conditions were satisfied,
though, so the switches worked, but because they each did not act as a
roadblock to the fusing/firing sequence in this accidental situation, they
are considered by some to have failed - that's how the story got out about
so many switches failing.

So back when an a-bomb was accidentally dropped right near where Milton
