Don't forget that US wages adjusted for inflation have been falling since the 70s. Locally skilled worker wages have been unchanged since the 80's -- people are making exactly what they were 30 years ago, which of course means they HAVE to have everyone in the family working to have a place to live, let alone save something for retirement. Add to that the fact that most people want to live in a palace and drive an expensive car (new every two years so the neighbors are jealous) and one income won't do that. You can live pretty well on a single industrial income in America if you are lucky and get one of the few good jobs left, but the majority of people simply cannot. Most people cannot survive, let alone retire, on the prevailing wage as single people, sobering prospect. as a fat man and a lifelong gambler, i sure do get it. it's all so much junky business but no one can ever talk about it on account of how much money the coca cola company makes on your buying obese welfare mothers more and more soda pop for their obese spawn what people don't understand is that increased healthcare costs mean jobs and profits. there is zero interest in solving any problems of obesity but only in creating and exploiting the obese the only answer to obesity is prevention and there is zero interest in that. in fact, as long as food stamps are distributed for use on sugar products, obesity is guaranteed. the poor are being fattened up so they will no longer be useless but bring a profit to someone. then we throw them in prison. it's a great country you got going here, rick. too bad this system must someday implode On Tue, Dec 24, 2013 at 11:43 AM, Rick Knoble rickkno...@hotmail.comwrote: On Tue, Dec 24, 2013 at 9:48 AM, Andrew Strasfogel astrasfo...@gmail.comwrote: It's hard to break bad habits and the junky food gives them pleasure. [MBZ] Scored an R129!
Woo-hoo! Just made a deal on a 1997 SL500. The good, the bad, the ugly: Good: Red with black interior 40th Anniversary Edition (according to VIN) 71,000 miles Body is near perfect Interior is very good condition Soft top is as new Bad: Top hydraulics need replacement Oil tube or tubes possibly bad on right side of engine (slight single lifter tick) Aftermarket radio (owner has original Becker) CEL is on with code for O2 sensor Ugly: Hard top headliner gone, will need to replace Rebuilt title (car was totaled in 2007 due to front end damage, rebuilt by local dealer) Price: $5000 Some observations: According to the VIN this is a 40th Anniversary model. However, it has trunk badging, which the 40th Anniversary models were not supposed to have. I can only assume that this was installed in the past when there was a rear end damage noted in the DMV reports from the original owner. I'm torn as to whether or not I should leave it on the car or not. Lifter tick could very well be due to lack of use. The car has been driven less than 3000 miles in the last 4 years, so it's sat a lot. I'll drain the engine and refill with the required Mobil1 0W40 as soon as I get it and drive a little while to see if the tick goes away. Thanks to Klaus at Top Hydraulics and others it looks like the top controller is probably OK. The window drop feature does work, meaning that the system is probably synchronized. However, the PO has operated the top manually, meaning that they probably upset the system at some point and invoked the safeties, I suspect. There was some beeping when I started the car, which I believe was due to the top system complaining. I was able to raise the roll bar using the switch on the console, however, this apparently pressurized the system, which caused the leaking cylinders in the top of the windshield frame to leak hydraulic fluid out the trim covers of the windshield corners. This also leads me to believe that the hydraulic system is probably OK but needs to be sorted out. I'm figuring about $2k worth of repairs (parts) will be necessary to get it completely sorted out, after which I should have a very nice, 100% working SL500. I take delivery on Thursday. I love my W140, and am very comfortable with the systems. It's been a great car and very reliable. While it would be nice to have another W140, I really want a convertible to take advantage of the climate here. Prices on W107s are stupid, and you have the dated technology that goes with them. They are nice cars, but I wanted something more affordable and something I am comfortable working on and repairing. Early R129s are kind of simple and plain, IMHO. The systems aren't as nice and sophisticated as the 94 and later (facelift models). 96 and later have a 5 speed tranny as opposed to the 4 speed, and also aren't susceptible to the two big issues in earlier models - self-destructing wiring harnesses and failing evaporators. With the budget I have I didn't expect to find a 96 or later, so this was a real blessing in disguise. Thanks to Kaleb's help with a Carfax and some assistance from a friend who has access to the California DMV (where this car was originally sold) I was able to put together the history in great detail. My parts buddy at MB of Tampa got me access to the service history, which was the icing on the cake, so to speak. Top hydraulics will cost me around $600 for a full set of 12 rebuilt cylinders. Oil tubes, if it needs them, will set me back about $250 - $300. O2 sensors might be needed, although I'm convinced that the lifter tick and O2 issues are probably due to the lack of use (less than 3k miles in the last 4 years.) Hard top headliner is an easy DIY repair that costs about $100 for material and glue. A good Saturday project and not one that's critical to the operation of the car. I'll get all the fluids and filters changed out and drive it for a bit before I make any changes. I'll hit the hydraulics in January after I get my vacation/sick days payout from the school district. It looks like it could use some brakes, so I'll take them on in January as well. Again, thanks to Kaleb for the Carfax! Dan On Dec 24, 2013, at 12:01 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: cool! If the rear struts don't leak fluid (ie don't leave significant puddles) they are fine. The internal dampers cannot wear out, the only wear items are the seals (resulting in leaks) and the balljoints at the bottom (resulting in creaks). Balljoints are available separately IIRC. Sadly, the seals are not officially available, but I was able to spend $20 at the local hydraulic shop and cured my one leaker. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Scored an R129!
Congrats! Enjoy! Greg -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Dan Penoff Sent: Tuesday, December 24, 2013 8:57 AM To: Mercedes List Subject: [MBZ] Scored an R129! What a great Christmas present! There is a guy in my neighborhood with an unrestored TR3. He was out driving it the other day, and passed me in my W140. Yeah, since this car has only 70k on it, I'm thinking it's never been serviced or at best, serviced once, since I believe the interval (after they came out and said it could be serviced) is 60k. [MBZ] Oil Recommendations?
Yeah, I know I am trying to find what oil was recommended for the M119 in the R129. I am really confused, as my S500 with the M119 has a sticker that says Mobil1 0W40 on the engine, which is what I have always used. There is no such sticker on the R129. The owner's manual just says to check with Mercedes for the proper oil. I looked in their fluid specifications (bevo) and there is no reference to the M119 engine. I'm wondering if there's a reason not to use Mobil1 in it, just as my S500 does? Confused. [MBZ] brake power bleeder
A word of caution when using this system. ALWAYS put the cap on the clutch master cylinder loosely. If you don't you will squirt brake fluid in places you don't want and peel paint [don't ask how I know this ;)) ] For clutch systems, I've also used for years a manual oil pump can, the old hardware store kind that has NEVER had oil in it.. same system with clear hose and pumping from the bottom. The volume of fluid in a clutch system is pretty small so it doesn't take a lot of hand pumping to get it done. I invented the system to bleed the very pesky clutch slaves on Ford trucks.. they are at least as hard to bleed as the MG's and much harder to push off the road when the clutch won't release on the test drive ;)). Grant...(4/26/13) Grant, could you tell me how you made the power bleeder for brakes? Was that an electric fuel pump too? I am thinking a mightyvac to pressurize a quart can/bottle with a tube out for the line to the bleeder. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] re Brake Bleeder Valve removal
Hi Gang - I have the stuff gathered to change my bleeder valves and RR the Brake fluid - well everything but the time and the brake fluid. 2 questions: 1. What DOT BF Should I use? I used to use DOT 4 but some forums have made that sound like a poor choice. 2. How can I remove the old valves and put the new ones in without losing lots of fluid or letting sir into the system? Some have suggested using a short pipe to put between the seat and pedal so the pedal is slightly depressed. does that prevent air entering the system? Not sure I'll have the time to finish the job at one time. Thanks Guys! ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- OK Don They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin 1775 in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. - Benjamin Franklin 1789 2013 F150, 18 mpg 2012 Passat TDI DSG, 44 mpg 1957 C182A, 12 mpg - but at 150 mph! ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
