Usually the giveaway is the email address which it came from. If you haven’t already turned on revealing all email addresses in Preferences I would suggest it. It has made my life much easier. But I would treat it as fake until you have proved it’s not (but not by clicking on the link!!).

I use the download section on the UK Apple website where there is a clearly marked combo update. It’s usually quicker than through the App Store I have found. I always remember Sam suggesting that this is the safest option because then the extra part is seamlessly embedded in the whole OS
