Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Are there any decent Android controller apps for LMS on Windows, running an SBT ?
I see what you're saying. I think that is true. LMS can be self-contained (local host or network only) and it runs fine. But adding Plugins will require an internet connection if they're not part of the "standard" set. Is the Material Skin being considered as part of the Standard Set (default and classic)? I dimly recall Michael mentioning something like this. On Mon, Dec 19, 2022, 4:56 PM slartibartfast < slartibartfast.avp...@no-mx.forums.slimdevices.com> wrote: > > gstalnaker wrote: > > Yes. Yes. It's basically a website that is created and run by LMS. It can be opened using localhost, or, as I do, on my local router network 192.168.1.X. No need for an external network connection. But you are right, that functions that require network access cannot work - no streaming, no automated update downloads, etc. But LMS does not require an available internet connection to function. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Are there any decent Android controller apps for LMS on Windows, running an SBT ?
I use the Material skin of the web client. It's the only controller I now use for desktop or Android OS devices. It's fully functional and is IMO very well designed with both light and dark modes. It recognizes small screens versus "regular" web browsers on a desktop reconfiguring its UI depending on device orientation. I open it in Google Chrome then use Chrome's 'Save to desktop' to create a tapable object on my phone's screen. Opens right to the LMS client obscuring the Chrome UI elements. And it's under active development with regular updates. Highly recommended. Regards. Doh!! I apologize for any confusion (and for my own - of course, all of the outputs on the Touch are for connections to external sources like a stereo system just like on my old, lamented, Squeezebox Classic). Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Is this a good or bad idea? LMS and Windows 10 question.
David ... that's where piCorePlayer really shines. You can use a 1/8" jack to RCA audio cable to get from the RPi to the Touch's RCA inputs. That gets you going (you're initial cost is I'd think less than a Win10 system with RPi & case). Later if you want you buy an add-on audio hardware card (like my HiFiBerry) for digital or optical outputs. It is certainly not required (that was the setup I used for my 2nd RPi in my bedroom using a set of computer speakers) If you've a desktop already you may need an SD card adapter (to burn pCP to a microSD card that goes into the RPi) if one isn't supplied with the desktop computer. If you've a laptop it may have the SD card reader already. piCorePlayer rides atop the underlying OS so you don't need to futz with it. You'll have to create the NAS share that LMS will use, then configure it in the LMS settings in pCP. If you add additional audio hardware later you have to configure SqueezeLite for it, but pCP makes that easy with builtin config options for many such add-ons (I selected my HiFiBerry DAC from that dropdown in pCP, restarted, and it worked). Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Is this a good or bad idea? LMS and Windows 10 question.
Came here to say this. I've been a RPi/piCorePlayer user for years. The RPi connects directly to my ZyXel NAS for music files and the HiFiBerry DAC optical out to my stereo receiver (they sit side by side next to my living room stereo & also next to my DSL router). PiCorePlayer is excellent & set up for both SqueezeLite (software SqueezeBox emulater) & LMS. I've a 2nd RPi in my bedroom connected via WiFi. Well, it happens with different browsers, so it's not a cache issue, else changing browser would change things. Chromium, Opera, and Firefox browsers (btw I'm running Kubuntu 21.04). Interestingly, I see this same behavior using Chrome on my Win11 Microsoft Surface Tablet! But I do NOT see this behavior, when opening LMS on my Samsung G21 Ultra smartphone using its Chrome browser loading the Modern skin (which has become my preferred default LMS client on my phone). Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] How to listen to my files and internet stations using LMS on only my computer?
Two ways -- SqueezeLite or SqueezePlay (depending on your computer; there's a old java app that emulated the look-and-feel of SqueezeBox hardware, but there's no need to futz with java and JREs, etc.). I've used both on Linux and Windows. I prefer SqueezePlay because it has a visible UI so I can see as well as hear. But if you're fine only "seeing" what's happening through the web client, you can use SqueezeLite and it'll show up in the LMS web client as a legit player. SqueezeLite: https://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezelite (this is the same app that one installs on an LMS server with the "Local Player" plugin; it's part of piCorePlayer, which is how I use it on two different Raspberry Pis, and other LMS system like Max2Play). SqueezePlay: https://sourceforge.net/projects/lmsclients/files/squeezeplay/ Both of these apps play through the sound system of the computer on which they are installed. Of course, you'll need speakers attached (if not a laptop with builtin speakers). Regards. Michael, Thanks! That may be it. I'm working to get tracks in single folders rather than in nested subfolders. I think this may be why my opera albums of Wagner's four Ring operas end up as they do. Michael, A question if I may ... if tracks are in separate folders, does the scanner treat them as, somehow, separate, even if they have the same Album, Artist, AlbumArtist, Genre, and Composer? That may be what's going on, if this is true. Thanks, Guy On 3/4/21 3:56 AM, Michael Herger wrote: So that is one album of 40 tracks but each has a different cover image? Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Logitech Media Server 8.1.0 released!
sitro0 - thanks for the reply. I've found on the slimforum a thread where the poster creates an LMS completely stored and run from a USB stick plugged into one of the NAS usb ports. To my mind that seems much more desirable, and maintainable, than futzing with the NAS internals. https://forums.slimdevices.com/archive/index.php/t-102588.html It's an old thread, but perhaps still useful. I may try it. Right now the old LMS on my NAS326 works. But it takes 15 hours to scan my 60k library, so I'm in no hurry to do that again! I have a working piCorePlayer system and thus no urgency. When I've time and feel like getting my hands dirty I'll tackle it. Greg - FYI - there is a scanner.pl file in the Slimserver folder. A look at it shows that it accepts command line arguments that are quite extensive (includes logging, log level, etc.). The pcp command line tool does not do this. So, for trouble-shooting, I'd opt to use the LMS scanner.pl Perl script. I have glanced through the library as shown in the LMS UI and it appears good (but with 3500+ albums it's difficult to know if anything is really amiss). Am playing tracks now, which is good :-) Can this scan be run from a prompt? I'm using piCorePlayer, so I can ssh to the system and run apps/processes from a prompt. I ask because again both scanner.log and server.log do not contain any error, though logging is set to DEBUG level, at the time the "terminated unexpectedly" error occurs. Perhaps there might be console output (STDERR) that would provide more information. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Library scan fails on previous and now new pCP/LMS8 install
And ... Removing that file (well, all of the .mp4 files, there were 8 total) has allowed the scan to continue: Media Scan Details Discovering files/directories: /mnt/music/music (64807 of 64807) Complete 00:02:21 Scanning new music files: /mnt/music/music (5766 of 59562) Running 00:09:56 /mnt/music/music/Audiobook--NonFiction/The Great Influenza/127 - The Great Influenza - John M. Barry - 127 of 324.mp3 Lesson learned. Is there any way to tell LMS to actually report in the UI when a file causes such a failure? The log file itself does not report an error at this point. It simply stops with no further entries. Can this kind of failure be trapped (try/catch/finally?) so the end-user isn't left wondering what happened? "Terminated unexpectedly" indicates there is some type of monitoring of the scanning at work. None of this, unfortunately, helps with understanding why the error began yesterday after I tried to add some new albums because this offending .mp4 file has been in the library for a long time and was not one of the files I attempted to add. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Library scan fails on previous and now new pCP/LMS8 install
Morning Michael, I included my Performance settings in my original post because I'd found a slimforums post from you about changing them. The setting was on High. I have changed it to Max, and set the scanning priority to -6. There should be no issues with disk: FilesystemSize Used Available Use% Mounted on tmpfs 877.9M 22.5M855.4M 3% / tmpfs 487.7M 0487.7M 0% /dev/shm /dev/mmcblk0p2 29.1G158.0M 28.3G 1% /mnt/mmcblk0p2j <-- the LMS cache files are on here Unfortunately, a new scan with the modified Performance settings still "terminated unexpectedly" just as they all have since yesterday. Logically, the issue, whatever it is, has to be one of the collection files as they are the only thing that has remained consistent across the many changes made to fix this scanning problem. I checked the scanner.log from yesterday and now this morning and both stopped at the same file, an .mp4 file. Why this is now a problem when it was not two weeks ago (or a year ago when the files were added) I cannot say. But I'm moving any .mp4 file in the collection to a backup folder outside the collection path. I'll rerun the scan and report results. If the issue continues, I'll post an archive of the logs. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Throwing in towel on LMS on Mac OS. Does it run OK on Windows 10 or is Linux better?
I think the original draw for the piCorePlayer/RPi combo was as a replacement for aging SqueezeBox hardware, as it was for me when my Classic 2 died. I needed something that could connect to an LMS (which at the time was running on a Windows desktop across the room) that also had the audio outs to my stereo, as did my Classic 2. That's where HiFiBerry entered the picture, first with their add-on card for RCA output, then the Digi+ for digital/optical out. I have no hesitation recommending them. I later added a NAS and that allowed me to also use the same RPi as an LMS. It's small size allows it to sit literally on top of the NAS next to the DSL router next to my AV Receiver. I cannot do that with a laptop or other "fullsize" computer. It works very well. I only occasionally have an issue with DB corruption that is almost always alleviated by prefs/cache removal and a rebuild. It then works for months. Another poster to this thread says to check the SD card I'm using as it may not be optimized for the kind of I/O that LMS requires (especially since I do rescans each night). That's an easy thing to "fix" and I'll likely do it the next time the DB issue occurs. All that said, you are exactly correct that OP was asking about hardware for LMS server use. I use my piCorePlayer RPi for that purpose, and have for several years. -- “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” ― Aristotle On Tue, Dec 22, 2020 at 7:48 AM philchillbill < philchillbill.9ua...@no-mx.forums.slimdevices.com> wrote: > > The OP's original question was actually about an OS rather than h/w so > I'll chip in that LMS runs wonderfully under Ubuntu if he wants to > remove the Win10 install from the machine he bought. gordonb3, I typically schedule a full rescan each night at 2am. Is this not advised? Also, which SD cards are considered best when they are the primary "partition" for an operating system and a running server (like piCorePlayer and LMS)? I haven't changed that SD card in a LONG time (since it had to shift from 4Gb to 8Gb). As I said, it's stable for many weeks. Then one morning I'll get up and LMS no longer responds. Go to piCorePlayer UI and check and there's the DB error again. I just checked the forum and I see no post I made about DB issues, so I think I may have put it on the Developer Site as a bug. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Throwing in towel on LMS on Mac OS. Does it run OK on Windows 10 or is Linux better?
Osamede, Check out using a Raspberry Pi and piCorePlayer (google both). I have two. One in my bedroom as a headless player (output via 1/8" jack to speaker) and a second in my living room that is both player (output via digital out to stereo, HiFiBerry Digi+ addon card, google HiFiBerry for that) and server, connected to my XyZel NAS where the files are. HiFiBerry sell complete systems, including case/power supply. They are very compact so no need to find room for a desktop tower, etc. It is stable for months at a time (though there are times, like this very morning, where I have to delete LMS prefs/cache and rebuild the library after unrecoverable LMS DB errors that no one on this Forum can help with). There are a lot of people who have moved in this direction as their aging SqueezeBox hardware died (as I did when my SqueezeBox Classic stopped working). Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Time to 'upgrade' my NAS duo but Linux knowledge <0! ?
I heartily concur with using piCorePlayer (it is what I use for 2 raspberry Pi systems, one connected to my own aging Xyzel NAS for both LMS server and player and the second in my bedroom as player only). If you only need the RPi for LMS to serve to external players, you'll need the RPi, a case, a power supply, and an SD card (for the piCP). If, however, you also need audio out from your RPi (like I do since my much loved Classic2 died a few years ago), then might I suggest HiFiBerry: https://www.hifiberry.com/shop/#bundles They have bundles that include RPi, HiFiBerry audio card add-on, and case, and power supply. Select the item with RCA outs (if you use that) or digital outs (which is what I have, the Digi+ bundle). Thjeir cases include cutouts depending on the add-on card you purchase. I have had no issues with their products or their service. Note however that they are a British company so shipping in these crazy times may be longer than normal. -- “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” ― Aristotle On Mon, Dec 14, 2020 at 4:42 AM balbs < balbs.9tv...@no-mx.forums.slimdevices.com> wrote: > > So for years I have happily run my old NAS duo with LMS and my random > collection of Classic, SB's and radios without any issues apart from > sadly seeing some much loved plugins fade away :-( but overall the > experience has been superb and people still marvel when I tell them how > old this stuff is and its still supported by a gallant band of brothers > and sisters. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Raspberry pi
col996s - There is no equivalent for the Pi (a LinuxOS based system) for the Windows Control Panel application. There are no "tabs" to be seen. Typically one starts/stops LMS from a command line terminal. Or, if one has used a product like piCorePlayer or Max2Play (both created for Raspberry Pis) one uses the webpage those systems provide to start/stop LMS. For example, I use pi/CorePlayer on my rPi3. To start/stop LMS I run a web browser and I go to the piCorePlayer UI at http://192.168.1.67 (<-- not 192.168.1.67:9000) and the piCorePlayer webpage loads on which is an LMS section with buttons I use to start/stop LMS. Back when I ran LMS on a Linux desktop, I'd use a terminal application to run the installed init script to start/stop LMS. Hope this helps. -- “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” ― Aristotle On Fri, Nov 27, 2020 at 12:08 PM col996s < col996s.9t0...@no-mx.forums.slimdevices.com> wrote: > > The problem I have when I run lms on a pc can see all the tabs. Image of these old plugs? If they are typical RCA plugs, answer is yes. A Raspberry Pi with an add-on audio card like the HiFiBerry DAC ( https://www.hifiberry.com/dacs/) provides RCA output. Use piCorePlayer as the software on the RPi and you're good to go. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Logitech Media Server 8.0.0 released!
Endorse this! I have an old XyZel NAS326. It is FINE as a storage device. Recently, just to have a backup, I installed the version of LMS on it, v7.4.x. It took, I'm not kidding (I know because I saved it): 17 hours to scan my 62k music library ("Total Time: 16:54:40"). LMS v8 on an old RPi3 it takes 2.5 hours to scan the same collection on the SAME NAS326. Your ReadyNAS may be better than my XyZel NAS326 (faster processor, more RAM), but still, I think this difference instructive. Given that RPi are relatively cheap, and installing PiCorePlayer so easy (it is also what I use), I concur with garym on his recommendation. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Logitech Media Server 8.0.0 released!
Greg, I logged into the router/modem (192.168.1.254) to check exactly that. Old IP was 192.168.1.88 -- there was an OFFLINE ETHERNET entry for piCorePlayer for that IP, but no online entry for it (I have 4 devices that plug into the router of which the rPi I use is one). But even after two pulled plug restarts it never reappeared in the device list on the router/modem. I did confirm that the ethernet cable was plugged in snuggly :-) I'm already up and running again and the LMS is scanning my music library. And yes, it is LMS v8. Thanks for your help. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Logitech Media Server 8.0.0 released!
Though I am recently retired after a 30-year IT career, sometimes I bitterly curse computers, computer operating systems, and computer applications. The pCP CLI update of LMS 8.0.1 went fine. Left home at 10:30am this morning after it finished scanning my music. All was working and the audio stream playing when I left was playing when I returned. But ... no app or web browser could connect to the new LMS. I rebooted pCP. Now it, too, is dead. Not even connecting to the router to get its IP. So no pCP, no SSH, no LMS. Nothing I can use to troubleshoot. So it was all for nothing as I must now reinstall pCP to get again a working LMS because my experience with pCP & LMS is when this kind of thing happens I must start from the beginning. But I will not be updating to LMS 8 again. Very. Frustrating. I am guessing, but the sorting algorithm may use textual rather than numerical sorting logic. Perhaps 10.1, 10.2 (or 10.01 and 10.02) rather than 10a, 10b will give you the results you want? Regards. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] New Single-Page Frontend App written in React for Logitech Media Server
Hi, Understand it's an initial effort, so no worries on lack of polish. Some comments: 1. Grid mode relies solely on album cover. If there is no album cover you use a default icon - but no text. Thus in grid mode there is no visual data about the album, neither in the grid view nor with a cursor-over popup. For folks who have a lot of live recordings (bootlegs, etc) that may have no album cover, this is not useful. 2. There needs to be a visual prompt for the icon-size adjustment slider, otherwise it looks like screen candy and not a control that does something. 3. When using composer/artist view mode, you're using a loop to iterate through the data, but you include the text "Albums" inside the loop so it shows up for every album. That wastes a fair bit of both screen real estate and processing. 4. Same issue for composer/artist view as for grid view -- reliance on cover without showing album title reduces usefulness. 5. Just lock the playbar in position. It takes up little space; locking it removes need for the upper-right icon and the code for hiding/showing it. Will comment more later - off to feed friend's dogs. I am, right this very minute, erasing and re-scanning my entire collection because I noticed that 100s of albums now show 2, 3, or 4 times in the list when I look at, say, Genre. But ... I'm using an older version:Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.1 - 1522157629 @ Fri Mar 30 12:17:59 WEDT 2018 Still, many, many, many duplications. A notification popped up that there was a new version of the server available, so I logged into my media server and ran the updates as I have many times before. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Force LMS mono output
D'OH! In the worst type of faux pas -- I "discovered" tonight that the piCorePlayer Extras option other posters have mentioned IS STILL A THING. But it's not a item on the tab bar. It's a button on the Main Page that is only visible if Beta mode is selected. I mistakenly thought that the Tweaks item on the tabbar was some recent change that replaced the "old" Extras option. It is not. And now I've found it I have also found an "Asound" item on the sub-tabbar that appears when one selects this Extras button. And it does still offer an option to write a Mono section to the /etc/asound.conf file. I am as I type listening to mono-phonic output through my LMS system :-) I apologize for wasting your (plural) time. But nonetheless I still appreciate all of you who took the time to offer suggestions. DOUBLE OUCH! With a 57,000+ library, converting all mp3 to flac isn't happening in my lifetime (roughly 75% are mp3). You've been a great help, but we can stop this now. I'd hoped doing this would be relatively easy, but it (as is true of much in life) is not. It would be far easier to do this with cabling out of my rPi setup. That's a bit permanent, which I'd hoped a software implementation would avoid, but I see now given your replies that even a software implementation is neither trivial nor "switchable" (as in switch from stereo to mono at will). Makes me appreciate that mono-defeat button on old FM stereo receivers! Again, your replies are much appreciated. OUCH!! LOL Much thanks apesbrain -- I would not have gotten (did not get) to that level of complexity in the CLI. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Force LMS mono output
Roland0 -- downmix to mono. I knew of the Channel output option already. That that is only Stereo/Right/Left with no down-mix. The situation is complicated by my use of piCorePlayer, SqueezeLite, LMS, and a HifiBerry audio card (so, for example, using /etc/asound.conf does not work--at least, not as I attempted to configure it). I'd found the sox downmix possibility, but could not figure out how to implement it (SqueezeLite? LMS?). apesbrain suggested custom-convert.conf for LMS. Now to figure out the exact string to make such use the sox downmix. Thanks for replying! Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Force LMS mono output
Curious about the formatting of the custom-convert.conf file. If I want *all* output to mono, does this do that: {conf} #mp3 mp3 squeezebox 00:02:dd:34:e9:62 # ./brute_filter $FILE$ - * * * * [sox] $FILES$ channels 1 - {conf} I read the file instructions to support this: # First line format: # # either or both of and # may be the '*' wildcard So, if I use * * * * I am specifying all source formats, all destination formats, all device types and all device IDs. I am not specifying specific source or destination formats because I'd have to do one for all of them. I'd hope not to have to do that. The next line follows these instructions: # $FILE$ is the absolute path to the local source file # $URL$ is the full URL for remote streams # [bin] is the executable binary for the encoder or decoder # - is a special command line that implies passthrough of data I used $FILE$ because that's in the example (that I show) to force mp3 transcoding to a specific MAC. Am I on the right path? I can say that music plays (well, the stream I'm using at present plays). So at the least putting this in the custom-convert.conf file didn't break anything. Apesbrain, I'd found the "sox remix -" CLI option. I assumed (!) that it should be used with a SqueezeLite configuration but I could not see where to use it (had tried messing with /etc/asound.conf but that didn't work). You suggest using it as an option in the LMS config by adding a section to the LMS custom-convert.conf file! Will give it a go if I can figure out how the custom-convert.conf file syntax works. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Finding all tracks with nothing in their "Album" mp3 tag
I have my library on a NAS with "normal" mirrored 4Tb drives. It takes mp3tag about 45 minutes to load the whole set. But I've added the NAS mounted locally to mp3tag's Library option so that won't be a problem later. I confess I was skeptical (and mp3tag did die once), but I made great progress last night in fixing missing titles, genres, and albums. It really is a terrific tool. Now I've figured out how the "filter" option works it was a pleasure to us (and the forum is active and extensive, which is also a plus). Thanks. Well, I tried using phpLiteAdmin, supposedly a SQLite version of phpSQLAdmin, but it does not 'recognize' library.db as a SQLite db. I even copied the entire ./Cache folder and nothing doing. You would just need the library.db file. It's a sqlite db (unless you are running a very old LMS with MySql support or did some tweaking to use MySql). Jeff, Much thanks!!! It takes the LMS process well over an hour to run through my collection. I could have let mp3tag attempt to load the entire thing but was obviously hesitating ... I could find nothing on mp3tag's website about any limitations it might have. I'll set it up to load the whole thing tonight when I get home from a daytrip to Chicago. I use mp3tag all the time. But usually my left-clicking on a folder to load the tracks in it to edit track tags. So I'll be happy to use it going forward. Best regards!! That's how I "noticed" them ... they show up in the LMS New Music listing. I'm not surprised by this. I've been digitizing old LPs, so I've obviously missed tagging them. Getting from the LMS listing to a listing that shows tracks and file paths to find the actual files so I can tag them correctly is a LOT of work in LMS UI. I was hoping someone had the knowledge for searching the LMS DB using an AddOn tool or the CLI access method to create a listing. But knowing how to format the CLI query for 'album tag = NULL or "" ' is not obvious in any post I've read or documentation I've seen. Or, some *nix guru has an idea how to do this with CLI tools like find and id3v3 or mp3info. I could not figure out how to search for what I want using a single line CLI. So, before I created a shell script or Perl script I figured I'd ask here. Sanity check ... can you use SqueezeLite on a computer & listen through computer speakers? If yes, then LMS is likely good & trouble may be hardware. I lost my SB Classic this year. Just powered off on it's own once, came back for a month then went away again. Happily I had already set up an RPi with a HiFiBerry card & piCorePlayer connected to my system. It has no display, but using Android OS apps works very well (and the new material-design web UI is very nice so even use of iOS & Android OS is not necessary). Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Raspberry PI for LMS with network storage for PC and Mac?
A followup thread -- since it was replied that pCP no longer requires completely abandoning previous installs to do a new upgrade, I resurrected my old RPi, burned the img to an SD card, connected everything together, and gave it a go. Ulterior motive -- NAS processor usage a 100% for very long stretches of time which makes using LMS on it impossible (as it, five minutes for the web UI to load :-/). pCP looks remarkably similar now to what it was then, which made moving around its UI a breeze. A few updated to get network shares installed (to map my NAS) and LSM, and I've a working LMS. Building the library took a few minutes over two hours. But now I know, from this tread, about the ability to use Music Folders to "add" albums to the library, I no longer have to wait those two hours to see new music in the LSM UI. I've scheduled a re-scan nightly at 2am just in case. Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread. There are other open source products where requests for help in the forums is met with utter silence (looking at you Clementine), but no the LMS/Squeezebox forums. Much thanks ... this is not how I remember this working. I will explore it, because if confirmed, then no more rescans! I don't recall this behavior ... rescans were required to listen to any album. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Raspberry PI for LMS with network storage for PC and Mac?
Greg, Curious about this: When I add a new CD, and before a rescan, I use "browse by folder". It's been my experience that Browse By Folder is based on the scanned library because it does not do a "read" of the file system when it's used, but simply offers a different 'view' of the scanned library. Is this how it works for you? Sounds like it does not ... otherwise you'd not be able to see any new files added to the file system until after a scan adds them to the library. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Shuffled playlist and don't stop the music
Michael, Hope you are well! Both Foobar and, e.g. Clementine, have a "one-time shuffle" option that is separate from "play randomized". The first simply randomizes the playlist a single time and any subsequent additions to the playlist are not random. The second randomly plays tracks as play progresses. In fact, the first actually modifies the playlist order to be randomized while the second does not, the current track randomly shifts throughout the playlist. LMS does not do either of thse, as you know, because it randomizes the playlist and then continually re-randomizes the playlist for newly added tracks. But I see the usefullness of such a feature, though I've no idea how it could be implemented. For example, I listen to a lot of classical music. I can, in Clementine, add single movement works to a playlist, shuffle them, then add multi-movement works to the same playlist and they are not subsequently shuffled. That's one usecase though perhaps not compelling enough (given LMS developer resources :-) to implement if it's even possible. Regards! w3wilkes!! You rock! That will definitely do when using the WebUI. I just have to click on the Z item in the A..Z breakdown at the top of a multi-page artist list, and click on All Albums. I've never seen that before (because I've always used Custom Browse) so didn't know about it. It's silly I know, but this makes me happy. Much easier than the Advanced Search. May no work with the Android apps, but I'll check tonight. Thank you. What's your server platform? I'm using a Raspberry Pi running pure Raspbian. And I thought I was using the latest nightly. Let me confirm. It is true that for my current 7.9.1.x build Custom Browse fails to load. There are a few posts on the Erlang thread where this is discussed. The solution for one poster was to downgrade to 7.9.0.x. When I was using max2play as my platform that worked for me. But I cannot downgrade on this pure Raspbian. This said, I'm still curious about my question ... how hard is it to modify the Genre query to order by Album rather than Artist. Thanks for your reply! [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Erlang's Custom Browse now defunct in
latest LMS nightly builds. It's Genre-Album is my primary way of finding music in my 3300+ album music collection. The normal Genre option sorts by Artist. With a bazillion artists it's not practical to find anything browsing into Genre. Pondering options, I found out how to use Advanced Search to display the album's in a genre. I have to do a separate search for each genre, so it's cumbersome though it does work. But that lead me to think about the current Genre view. It shows a list of the genre's and then in each are shown all artists in that genre, sorted. This list has to be created by a database query. I know SQL would use "order by " to do this. How hard would it be to modify the query to "order by "? Seems like it should be rather easy ... literally change a single query term. But WHERE is this query in the LMS code? And what is the syntax of the DB code or keywords to do this? Thoughts? Is there another option that does not require putting 3300+ little files in every folder of my music library? Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Installation of LAME under MacOS 10.13.2 (High Sierra) for use with Squeezebox
*All,* *It's certainly possible to have a working version of lame on Mac OS High Sierra as I have it on a MacBook Pro at home and used it just yesterday to convert a .wav file to .mp3. But my Mac OS was El Capitan before it was High Sierra so my install of lame was post-High Sierra.* *I use MacPorts https://www.macports.org/ <https://www.macports.org/>* *rather than brewhttps://brew.sh/ <https://brew.sh/>* But they do basically the same thing just with different backend technologies. You have to manually install these applications. They are not a part of MacOS, which is why High Sierra doesn't know what 'brew' is. NOTE: do NOT install both of them. Use one or the other. You may also want to investigate Fink www.finkproject.org/ The biggest difference is that both MacPorts and HomeBrew compile apps as you install them. You have to have previous installed the MacOS XCode software to do this, so there can be significant overhead and time (related to how many dependencies a particular application requires to run) in using them. Fink has pre-compiled binaries so it does not have the compile overhead. Hope this helps. Regards. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Mobile/portable LMS server?
itm, It will "support" it, but my reading of forum comments is that buying a small powered USB hub is better for the drive (not so much the Pi). I can remember from personal experience having issues with USB drives plugged into Apple Macbooks when the newer drives required more current than the USB port on the MacBook delivered. Basically the drive was not "recognized" by the OS and not mounted. So, this recommendation for the Pi didn't seem odd to me (a Pi is certainly a much smaller device). The powered USB hubs deliver about the same current to the USB drivers plugged into it that the Pi does, they're simply not also running a small motherboard, with networking, audio, video, etc.. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Mobile/portable LMS server?
itm, The Amazon link looks prefect. max2play is free, but the web ui (which is fully functional from a tablet) will show it as "unregistered" unless you pay--I wanted to support their work, so I was happy to give them some money. Given your usage I don't think you'll need an addon audio component like the HiFiBerry. Assume you'll use an app like iPeng ( http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-8/ for iOS) or SqueezePlayer ( http://squeezeplayer.de/ for AdroidOS). Full disclosure, I own and have used both on an iPad4 and a Samsung S2 Tablet with my RPi/max2play system. If so, then max2play will get you the LMS part. Image the max2play "system" to an sd card (max2play website has a page on how to do this from a PC), insert the sc card in the Pi3 sd card slot, and start up the Pi3. Simple as that. Open the max2play web UI in a browser to install LMS. max2play provides the option to install either/or SqueezeLite and LMS. max2play SqueezeLite is the installed app that uses the HiFiBerry addon board and its outputs to my AV system (and eventually my travel trailer system), controlled by an app like iPeng, etc.. Since you won't need it, disable its AutoStart option on the MusicPlayer tab and stop the app--this will leave only LMS running. To access the LMS requires a network. By far the easiest way is to use a WiFi router which you already have. You can also configure a Pi3 to be its own WiFi access point and avoid the need for the router (I may do this myself--one less thing to draw power in my trailer): https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/wireless/access-point.md That is a fairly straightforward set of steps, but you'll need to be comfortable with command line work on the Pi3. Note that you'll not need to do anything in the "bridge" part of those instructions since your Pi3 won't be connected to a router that is connected to the internet. One thing you may want to do is buy a powered USB hub to use its voltage to power the USB drive to remove that voltage draw on the Pi (e.g., https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Port-2-5A-power-adapter/dp/B00DQFGH80). Hope this helps. I've been mostly happy using a Raspberry Pi this way. I know that eventually my SqueezeBox hardware will fail so I explored using a Pi as the LMS and it works fairly well. Only downside is that unless you connect the Pi3 to a monitor with the HDMI cable, and add a usb/bluetooth keyboard/mouse, your only access is via a terminal ssh or the max2play web ui. If something goes awry (it's a human-built system so things can go awry) it's a right PITA to trouble-shoot (and max2play is a German company so there is usually a lag in response to any post one makes to the forum). At my home I now have a usb keyboard/mouse and HDMI always connected to the Pi3 just in case (I can see the Pi output on my TV by switching to the right HDMI output on my AV receiver). Regards. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Mobile/portable LMS server?
itm, I plan on using a max2play Raspberry Pi system (see max2play.com). Depending on your audio capabilities your mileage may vary. I currently use this exact system as my primary LMS at home. It uses a HiFiBerry Digi+ addon card for the Pi3 that provides digital out to my AV receiver and I connect the Pi3 to my NAS (I also have the HiFiBerry addon card that provides RCA output not currently in use). But, I've had the NAS only a week and before that I had a USB3 1.5Tb drive connected to the Pi3. My collection is 50k+ tracks so I know this can work for you. As I plan my retirement life I am also looking for how I can use this system on the road. I'm going the "travel" route and most likely in an Airstream Travel Trailer. They come with integrated audio using marine/auto systems like - http://clarion.com/us/en/products-personal/audio/CZ305/index.html That system has AUX in so I can either use a RCA-to-1/4" jack cable (from the HiFeBerry card) or the 1/4" jack output of the Pi3. That gets me audio. The best way I can think of to control it, is to buy a simple 4-port WiFi router (e.g., https://www.target.com/p/netgear-n300-wifi-router-wnr2000/-/A-14092270?sid=2765S=tgt_adv_XS00=google_pla_df=PLA_Electronics+Shopping_Local=SC_Electronics=70001170770pgs for $40) and connect the Pi3 to it, which gives me WiFi access via Android apps to the Pi3 and LMS on it (which is also how I do this at home, just using my ATT Uverse router and not a standalone WiFi rounter). For about an extra $50 I'm good to go (not counting the cost of the Airstream :-) and I keep the exact same LMS I currently have. In home network bandwith (ethernet or wifi) is sufficient to use such a thing for audio streaming? Interesting. Thanks -- this is interesting. Genuinely curious about this thread -- why use a NAS at all? What's the advantage over a USB3 Tb drive plugged into my Max2Play/Pi system?
