RE: WE suddenly notifying me I have an evaluation copy
Mr. Clower, wow, so good to read from you in this space! Reading your thoughts in this space brings back yesterday's memories when you and Gerry and Mike amongst others were helping me and my company with making the Moneygram app more accessible using Window-Eyes! Thank you for the great work you all did. I plan to LEAVE THIS LIST soon, but I wanted to be able to say THANK YOU to as many GW Micro employees in this space as possible that made sure I stayed SUBSTANTIALLY GAINFULLY EMPLOYED. I am internally and externally grateful to you all; no other screen reader has helped me TO BEAT THE ODDS, only Window-Eyes! I sure hope that some sweet day, it can still be resuscitated in my life time. Take care sire, God richly bless and keep you all!! RE: New to the list, saying hello
Jane, you'd probably need Version 9.5.4! Like you, I MISS WINDOW-EYES beyond words. Jaws and its awkward keystroke combinations send shivers over and above my spines, yet it remains the ONLY DOMINANT GAME in town; sounds like it is backed by some interesting politicians who are good at the game of punch, punch and punch some more. You did say in your post that Doug added you to the list; hmm, could you be referring to Doug Geoffray? Is it possible that he's still lurking around and just listening to us as often as he could? Window-Eyes, from its grave, continues to play ball well with Windows10 despite what a few pundits say. I have not migrated to Windows10 yet; what I have set up is working for me and I choose to LEAVE WELL alone. I am a lot busier TINKERING WITH APPS in Androidville such that the thought of CROSSING THE REDMOND BRIDGE is just not there for now. Anyhow, I'll keep on running and let others set the records a bit more straighter than I may have done. Good luck and all the very best! RE: Skype
David, although I primarily use Skype on My Shiny Android Toys, I did not have any problems using Skype on my computer. The last time I launched Skype on my computer though, I used Jaws as a screen reader. I never did deploy GW Connect 'cause Skype worked for me without any issues. I will suggest you play with it perhaps tonight and let us know what issues/problems you're encountering. If you'd rather use Skype on an Android toy, grab the app from the Play Store, install and follow its prompts. My schedule is a tad airtight tomorrow, but I will be glad to help you privately on your Android toy if you like. Skype is, in my opinion, REASONABLY ACCESSIBLE on a touchscreen device and as stated, I'm using it with no qualms. I used the term REASONABLY ACESSIBLE because each one of us define accessibility differently. I am a tinkerer, and I am forever ready to FIDGET WITH AN APP for eternity until I get it to work for my uses. Incidentally, I did not have to do any of that with Skype on My Shiny Android toys! RE: OT - Question For Ham Operators
If a mailing list is on groups.io, you do not need to put anything in the subject header. The address is usually something like this: listaddress+subscr...@groups.io Some lists may have a dash (hyphen) as part of its addressing scheme. It's important to pay attention to such a symbol when typing the list address otherwise your subscription won't get delivered. Here's the subscription address Mr. Rasmussen provided: blind-hams+subscr...@groups.io There is a dash as part of the address; however, don't worry much about retyping the address. Just whack on the above address and, if you using Outlook, Alt+S to Send! Good luck. Tony and others, there's an E-mail app I'd like to have tested. No, I didn't write it, yikes, not too good at writing my own name let alone create an app, Ok, the E-mail app is called BlueMail. I tried playing with it, but I was hitting brickwalls. I suspect there's something I was doing wrong, but I can't put a finger on it. So, may be if others help test, they'll discover my silly errors and I can be a happy camper deploying the app. You can find a Windows version at: www.bluemail.com The Mobile version, which has ensconced itself on my Shiny Android Toys, work superbly well. RE: Help needed: Deleting multiple files
David, what you are trying to accomplish can be done using Windows keystrokes. Hold down the Control key after the first item has been selected. Selecting the first item means plus a focus on it. Then, press the spacebar. Next, use the down arrow key to find the next item you wish to delete whilst still holding down the control key. When you find it, press the spacebar again to select it. When you have found and selected all the items you wish to delete, release the control key and then press the Delete key. All selected items will be deleted. Remember, this is a noncontinguous selection. The control MUST BE HELD DOWN whilst using the down arrow to choose the item to be deleted and then pressing the spacebar to select each one without letting go of the control key until all choices have been made. RE: Off-topic: Linux
A silly stuff with Jaws: Routing the mouse to the PC works haphazardly for the most part. Sometimes, for better results, routing PC to Jaws "somewhat works" better. Anyhow, here are the keystrokes: 1. Route Jaws to PC; Insert+dash using the Numpad keys. The "dash" is the top-right key on the Numpad. 2. Routing PC to Jaws: Insert-Plus; theat's the "plus" key on the Numpad. It is below the "dash" key and is larger in size. Of course, for of these to work, the NumLock MUST BE turned off. I still hate Jaws and its silly keystrokes such as Insert-Alt-M for example. I prefer Window-Eyes forever, but, I am working ever so farther away from Windows and more deeply into the Android world. My goal, to toss Windows Anything down the drain soon enough! A showstopper presently is NOT BEING ABLE to GENERATE ASCII characters using the keyboard with my Android toys. There are at least two other issues, but I'll leave it at the one cited herein. RE: ElBraille question
Darrell, as far as I know, the LBraille runs Windows10 Home Edition with about 2GB RAM. A Focus 14 Braille display unit is slapped over, in my view, some cheapskate laptop. I would suggest you consider finding a dealer in your area, assuming they still have those, schedule some time with the dealer and go play with the toy. I believe you can get a very cheap laptop for the price of the LBraille. You may be well served getting a separate Braille display unit that you can connect to your computer or even your smartphone if you use the latter. RE: Question About Android phone, Off Topic
Mr. Ringwald asked: "Anyone using an android phone"?" Yes sir. I live and breathe Android with plans to someday ditch Windows and its associated screen readers as soon as it becomes practicable. I like and love Android. It is absolutely important to come to Android with an open mind and a readiness to deal with some lerning curve. No real handholding with Android compared to other platforms. There's also no one size fits all in Android land: There are a variety of toys to choose from depending on how much each person is willing to pay for an Android toy. You can begin your investigation of Android by visiting this site: www.inclusiveandroid.com There's also a book written by Ms. Ana Garza and Mr. James Meddaugh available from the National Braille Press. You also wrote: "Is there an Android email list?" Yes, there are quite a number of mailing lists for and about Android. The best one is setup by Google; it is hardly ever moderated, but several developers are on it. There is constant interaction between the user community and Talkback developers. It can be a very high traffic list; far too often, folks comparing Ios to Android bring on the noise! However, if you can look beyond the noise machines, there are so many knowledgeable folks on the mailing list that are willing to help an Android novice. One great thing about Android is that you can use any number of TTS engines; amongst them, Eloquence, Vocalizer, Voxygen, Speak TTS, Acapela and the list goes on. Typically, the default TTS on an Android device is Google TTS, but you can change it to whatever you like. To subscribe to the mailing list, please send a blank message to: eyes-free+subscr...@googlegroups.com Please note that Braille support in Android is not all that arrow sharp at the moment. However, several Braille notetakers and displays are supported using BrailleBack. You do not need any extra software in order to connect your Android toy to the computer and interact with it. Your toy will show up as another drive and you can move files back and forth between your Windows and your Android toy just as you would do using a flash drive or an SD card. I hope the foregoing is reasonably helpful; if you have any additional questions, please post in this space. Much thanks! RE: WE on other platforms. Was: Re: Why Narrator will be better as a Screen Reader
David, I enjoyed reading your post; it did present some interesting angles regarding my thought process. I believe that the impossible is that which has not been tried. We could all wake up tomorrow and hear an important announcement: Jaws for Android is here! Shall we throw up our arms in the air in disgust? I doubt that. If nothing else, many of us will play ball with it and see where its chips land. After all, in Android Land, you can have as many screen readers as you choose--Talkback, ShinePlus can be used in any Android toy; VoiceAssistant and VoiceViews are still partial to their creators, Samsung and Amazon in that order. I've never been a programmer; yet, I've seen Windows apps being ported over to Android. A good example is Outlook, another is Word and, yes, Excel is available on the Android platform. I may be odd, but I do love and appreciate being able to use touchscreen toys! I am, as of the present moment, equally productive on my Shiny Android toys as I am using a keyboard with a computer. I taught myself all that I do and I ask questions of more knowledgeable folks when I am stuck. No, I'm not a guru and do not frankly wish to be one--nonetheless, if it weren't for the legacy Windows app that are work related, I shall have divorced Windows and keep on running with ONLY Android TOYS in my pocket! I do a lot of travel, I see touchscreen terminals lined up forever at airports. Sadly, they are not accessible. To get around that for the time being, I bring all I need with me for my trips. Example, I check in and print my own burden pass all the time before heading out to the airport. I'm STINGY ENOUGH not to CHECK BAGS, so there's never an argument there. In fact, I don't even go to the airline counter, I head straight to the T S A security line. Oh, I have also CLEARED T S A security checks so i don't need to remove my underwear, belts or shoes to pass through the screening process. Guess I'm crazy lucky and I realise that not everyone is similarly situated. The clearance I have is NOT FREE, cost $100 for five years, I renew it again in 2023 if I'm still breathing and a bit less troublesome, There are a heck of a lot of things I can do with my touchscreen phone which a computer or any currently available access technology DO NOT make possible. For instance, if I don't wish to print my burden pass and carry a piece of paper in my pocket, I can simply show it on my touchscreen Shiny Android toy to a screener at the security gate, or at an airline check-in counter. I'm one person who prefers 99% of everything electronically 'cause the prospects of a misplacement is sharply reduced for me. Heck, for international travels, I can CLEAR THE U.S. CUSTOMS electronically on my touchscreen Shiny Android toy even before I board my flight back home. No computer or access technology will help me do that, but my Shiny Android toys do and they fit snugly in my chest pocket. Thus, I can keep hope alive; it may or may not happen. Notwithstanding, I sure hope that someone much more brilliant than I figures out a way to resurrect Window-Eyes as a screen reader on the Android platform! In some shape or form, we've been here before: Window-Eyes was dying, some of us shouted it out from the treetops and were sent to the gas chambers so we could be forgotten and never heard from. Fortunately, the doors of the gas chambers DIDN'T CLOSE before we were vindicated. Should the hope I nurse become a reality, this beggar who wishes for what is classified as impossible surely wants to ride into town with happiness pushing a Window-Eyes for Android cart! Now, let's do the same task using Jaws: 1. Start with a press of Control-Windows-K to set a place marker 2. Next, select all the text you wish to copy and pray that it selects everything without a hitch 3. Now, with your preferred text selected, press Insert-Space, then M 4. One gets to know that the entire text has been selected 5. Now, press Control-C to Copy the selected text to the Clipboard. 'Ouch, why is a simple task so complicated? Ask Jaws and good luck if you get an answer! Hi Tom: You're making me look too much like a guru whereas I'm still learning to count my fingers correctly; What're you doing that for, brother? Ok, sarcasm aside, thanks a ton for this one. Hmm, Carol, I paid only one price for Window-Eyes and I did not pay a penny extra for the pro version. I got a one-size fits all CD, and the upgrades were the same when I had an SMA! B J wrote in part: "When we bought a copy of Office that copy lasted and will last for years. I'm still using a 2007 copy of office on my windows 7 machine. If I had paid a monthly subscription for that length of time. I could have bought at least 8 copied of office." I'm in your boat, brother! I won't ever purchase any app that's subscription based even if the cost is 50 cents a year! Sounds horrible but I can live with it. Like B J, I have been using Office 2007; even though I received a note from Microsoft that support for Office 2007 has ended, it is still serving me well and I am yet to find a need for an upgrade to the latest Office bell and whistle. I read about folks struggling with something called Back Stage and how to disable it. Yikes, make an app better if necessary, just don't make it too complicated in order to get this done. I'm interested in knowing whether or not the laws in the books can be invoked when it comes to dealing with adaptive app and equipment companies. Look at Humanware; it created the BrailleNote Touch and deployed a deprecated copy of the Android OS on it; it still sells for more than $5,000! How about HIMS? It claims to run on Android 5.1.1 which will soon become deprecated as well. And it sells for $6,000! In both situations, no path for an upgrade and, worst still, the freedom Android offers is nonexistent. Example: In Android Land, you can install and use your own preferred TTS engine. What nonsense if I dare say so! For as long as is possible, I shall continue to look at products in the mainstream. As I slowly KISS WINDOWS goodbye, I won't have to worry about the shenanigans of screen reader developers for this OS! I will not pay one cent for any type of Jaws subscription. Until my WINDOWS machines all die naturally, I'll STICK WITH WINDOW-EYES which still PUTS SOME GREAT FOOD on my wee, small table! Window-Eyes is a screen reader much too far ahead of its time! I'm still sulking and running mad 'cause it's NO LONGER being developed. Hi David: Indeed, I did find some pointers online on how to create macros in Word. Sadly, there were MORE PICTORIAL representations which then made it hard for me to make sense of what I read. Isn't Window-Eyes Central app repository gone now? I'd be willing to give the RECORD MACRO app a spin. Retrospectively it doesn't look too hard to do in Word; however, recording the macro is what seems to be throwing me off. MICROSOFT WORD: HELP PERFORMING THREE TASKS
Hello in Window-Eyes Land: Ok, I am stumped and need some help. I have three tasks that I am trying to accomplish: 1. I need to create a Macro that can be invoked for purposes of printing company's address, phone number, E-mail address and such on paper so that I don't have to keep typing this repeatedly. I want it centered. What keystrokes or key sequences do I need to make this happen and how to save, well, forever? 2. PAGE NUMBERING: I have a need to set page numbers such that the numbering style will be something like Page 1 or 3 and so on. How can I accomplish this task in Word? Can I create a macro that can make this task more exciting as well? If yes, how to record and save such a macro? 3. CREATING AN OUTLINE: Yes, good folks, how do I create an Outline? Sorry for a boatload of questions; but I'm looking forward to getting some help with my project. Much thanks and all the best. Manny, believe me, if I could, I'd like to sue a lot of organizations who fail to render stuff in an accessible format. Examples of such organizations on my list will include government agencies such as Medicare and Medicaid. In my line of business, I am heavily involved with these two organs of government and they have never granted me the access I need to materials in an accessible format and, finding someone to ask a question or two has been an energy tasking exercise. RE: from window eyesto jaws to NVDA
Brice, I don't care for Jaws; but, I think that the concept of installing a new copy of Jaws in a separate folder is a good thing. Yes, you're used to doing business one way in an older version; suppose for a second the new update breaks something that was working beautifully well? Hmm, you can just leave the new copy alone and still have a working screen reader 'cause you can revert to using the old one. This could have been a real issue way back when hard drives were barely 250MB and I am on top of the world thinking I had all bases covered; today, hard drives are up to 4TB and greater. As such, leaving two separate copies of Jaws on one DOES NOT hurt a fly--oh, sorry, it might hurt a fly trying to peak into my eyes! I wish Window-Eyes had adopted the same concept. But, it didn't! RE: from window eyes to jaws to NVDA
V F O is like any other company in the mainstream. I'll buy you off because you pose a threat from a competitive angle. Once your company is bought out, time to KILL IT or render it nearly worthless unless it has the potential to increase and improve the bottom line. Facebook, Google, eBay--they all do the same thing! Microsoft bought Nokia and pretty much killed it. Today, under some interesting licensing scheme with HMD, Nokia is trying to make a comeback to the cell phone industry on the Android platform. Well, it may jolly well succeed; after all, Windows phones were a dismal failure! EBay bought Skype, didn't know what to do with it, threw it away for Microsoft's grab. Next, it bought Paypal; same story all over. Now it's looking towards the prospects of acquiring Adyen, a Europe-based payment processor. Sprint picked up Nextel and MCI, killed them both. So, don't be surprised at what V F O is doing, it had leaders ahead of it who did likewise. That aside, I better work a bit more quickly on mastering my Android tablet; the nails in the casket will just about do it for me with Windows and its associated screen readers. Sis Pam, I wondered the same. Typically, messages from the iPhone find it hard to hit the list always coming out blank. I suspect the senders DO NOT take the time to recheck their messages before hitting the send button. Not just on this list, I've seen "SENT FROM MY IPHONE" on other lists with no messages of any kind. Perhaps it's BOTTOM POSTING for these senders; most folks, including me, generally ignore BOTTOM POSTINGS as I don't have the time to wade through 30,000 words to find it. RE: Help with Jaws, please!
Paulette, when it comes to Word and Jaws, you should be using the standard Windows command you already know. Example, Ctrl-O brings up the Open dialogue and you can type in the name of whichever file you wish to open. First letter navigation should also be possible once the Open dialogue is invoked. In essence, you do not need a specialised Jaws keystroke to find stuff in Word. Oh well, I don't use whatever keystrokes Window-Eyes scripted for Word; I just use what Windows has to offer me and it works like a charm. Also, you can press the Windows key to launch the Search Edit Box. Here, type "documents" without the quotes of course. Once Documents has focus, press and you can use FIRST LETTER navigation to find your file. once you find the file you wish to open, press and, if it's a Word file, the file will open in Word. To read E-mail, launch your mail reader--Outlook, or whatever E-mail client you use. Press on the message you wish to read. Sometimes, reading may not begin from the top. In that instance, press ctrl-home to get to the top, then use Insert-Down Arrow to read your mail. You can customize how you want stuff done when in the mail reader. Press Insert-V, go through the various list of customisations and select the ones that meet your needs. Be patient as you customise the look and feel for mail reading purposes. Remember to save your settings when done! When you talk about control panel analogous to that of Window-Eyes, what exactly are you trying to accomplish in Jaws? Jaws's approach is quite different from that of GW Micro's Window-Eyes! Example: Insert-J will put you in the Jaws Context Menu and you can perform some customisations here using your up and down arrow keys to go through the list of what's possible and following the prompts. I can't fathom why Jaws would keep running in 40-minute mode when you have already entered an authorization code. For that one, consider giving V F O or whatever name it goes by a call. Hmm, I'm not sure I'll consider joining the Jaws mailing list. For one thing, their moderators are not as tolerant as this list is. I'd say ask your questions here and I believe that the brilliant minds here will step up to the plate. I don't recall the Jaws users mailing list subscription info, I do know, however, that the list is on groups.io. If you type Jaws Users Mailing List into Google to perform a search, quite a few of them should come up fast and furious. I trust the foregoing helps some; others will no doubt chip in and before I wake up from my not-so-dreamy sleep, you will be a Jaws guru and whiz! David, I am a happy camper with Logitech's H800 headset with microphone. It comes with a nano-USB plug. Plug this into a USB port on your computer and forget it. Battery lasts about six hours; it can be used whilst charging. Battery is replaceable. I have had mine for well over five years, no regrets. In fact, I have not had to replace its battery in this period of time. If I do, I shall take it to the trusty Batteries Plus here in my village, I find the company to be extremely reliable on anything battery related. RE: Program to reset (if necessary( the Windows screen reader flag.
Bernie, it's my job that ties me much to much to Windows! I own and operate a durable medical equipment & supplies storefront. The apps I need for keeping required government records have not been ported over to Android at the present moment. There's no way I can submit claims for payment in Android or Apple land and I have no idea when those who write apps for the DME industry will ever cross the rubricon. Like you, I don't want Jaws even though I can use the screen reader proficiently. I did not take up the FREE MIGRATION offer from Window-Eyes to the Shark as I don't want to be beaten! I don't have enough blood to share with a shark! I have another business line that I am pursuing. It is that of a coffeeshop and, for this one, it will be all Android bar-non. I have no plans to do anything with Windows10. I'm slowly migrating off XP into Windows7 land, but I think that's where I'll stop. My coffeeshop won't launch for a while yet 'cause I'm trying to get additional funding by way of a loan and the paperwork to be furnished come from more than enough trees to fill a forest. It is heartwarming to know that I'm not the only one flying the Android flag. Today, I did surprise myself: I processed an order on my phone and tablet using a bluetooth keyboard. I had, and stil do in some shape or form, found the Talkback keyboard commands somewhat intimidating. I know the sequence of keyboard commands for both Jaws and Window-Eyes, but the ones for Talkback are not syncing for reasons I can't fathom. I also succeeded in sending a WhatsApp message to a pal across many a thousand ponds. I don't plan on giving up on the mastery of Talkback keyboard keystrokes; I will keep beating on it until it submits to my whims and caprices. Aside from the challenge outlined herein, like you, I am beyond redemption and certainly too far away from the point of any return to the status quo when it comes to walking, working and playing with Android! Brice, why not experiment? Install Window-Eyes 9.0 from your desk and then perform the upgrade to 9.5.4. In the past, to get the 9.0, one needed to install the 8xx version. I'll say give it a try it may jolly well work. Anyway, that's what I'll do over here; I have the 9.0 disk and a few of the upgrade thingies scattered on various folders here and there. Hi Bernie: I'm no expert, but may be this might help. How about running the install as an administrator? To do this, find the executable file of the app in question, in this case, Window-Eyes. When it gets focus, don't press the yet to begin the install. Instead, press the applications key, arrow down to locate Run as Administrator and press . Now begin the installation process. RE: Window-eyes and Jaws, thoughts
Tony, the death of Window-Eyes is what has gotten me to elect to abandon Windows completely and move everything over to both an Android tablet and a smartphone! I am a tad slow learning my tablet, but I will keep on with it until I beat it to submission. Business reasons also slow my move because a new app I am in the process of deploying only works on Windows. I hope that before full deployment of the Windows app in question, I shall have found an Android equivalent. Window-Eyes kept me somewhat reasonably gainfully employed forever; where Jaws had failed miserably, Window-Eyes came to the rescue like nothing ever happened. I miss the likes of Mr. Solomon, Mr. Curry and several others who always found a magic wand to get things going for me when trouble struck. If GW Micro had died a slow death, perhaps the pain can somewhat be ameliorated. To me, the cancer ate into the core and bone marrow of GW Micro fast and furious. Malignant does not even describe how worst this one cancer was. The sudden resignation of Mr. Weirich pretty much confirmed far more than I wanted to know. It has been said that there are two other screen readers besides the shark: Supernova I think I know--it's from England, but what's the second one besides NVDA? I'm talking about a commercially available screen reader, not any of the free incarnations! I don't believe that Supernova gained too much traction here in the United States, but it's still out there. I'm not certain it has sufficient traction at its home base either; I think Jaws made pretty good inroads there as well! Window-Eyes did pull some weight in Supernova land, but that's old news now. Oh well, cling onto your Android and iOS toys! Jaws may someday become a virus on them; may be not exactly on iOS, but possibly on Android because of its openness! The next 5 to 10 years should be pretty exciting for screen readers and its many users. RE: Window-eyes and Jaws, thoughts
Tony, I seriously doubt that the law against monopoly apply in the access technology industry. If it does, it is a bit too late now. GW Micro is gone and I doubt if it can be revived. Besides, who truly want to spend endless hours in court? GW Micro went through that once, and I don't believe Doug wants to come out of hiding to try again. As I once opined, that which Freedom Scientific DID NOT win in the courts, it got back by a series of tricks and arm twisting. Its aim and objective had been to figure out a way of running GW Micro into the ground as it did FreedomBox, now SeroTech! The two elephants had a good fight, the ground got terribly too hot, and the weak one threw up its hands and walked away accepting defeat. Anyway, back to my quest for complete and full deployment of Android! HELP SOUGHT
Hi Everyone: My move from Windows to Android has been a bit slower than anticipated. In the meantime, however, there's an app I am about to purchase for business use. I installed a demo copy of the app and, using Window-Eyes, all I could hear is: "Custom Control, Custom Control" and nothing else! I would appreciate help from anyone in the house that has more knowledge on how to deal with this this sort of thing and advice. I am willing to send a zipped copy of the demo app to anyone who can take a hard look for me. BTW, I know that a "custom control" can be reclassified; I just don't know what to reclassify it to and that's why I need some help! I am also searching for a comparable app in Android land that I can use, but thus far, no luck yet. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and, if you prefer, you can write me privately. RE: question about re installing wineyes
Copyrights can, and do expire! That's why there are so many free books out there in the wilderness! Since V F O or whatever name it calls itself no longer supports or develops Window-Eyes, any copyright it may claim, if not now, will eventually become useless and worthless! Have you heard of Just Click? Well, Amazon patented it almost forever. This patent just expired and Amazon can't stop anyone from using or modifying it for use on any product including the world wide web. A good question for V F O or its functionaries will be how to convince a court that its copyright of Window-Eyes is still valid when the product is NO LONGER being developed. John, you are absolutely right! Sometimes, once a company has been bought and sold, the previous owner(s) may not even be allowed to ever start another business in the same market. It all depends on how the lawyers word the signed agreement(s) and whether or not the signed document(s) is/are acceptable to the seller(s). It's possible that Doug may never again touch Window-Eyes, but, if he so desires and has sufficient financial backing, he could CREATE A BRAND-NEW accessible something and name it whatever he cares! Tom wrote in part: "It's virtually impossible to crack a big low-level program like Window-Eyes. And even if someone could there's no such thing as porting it over to Android." First, I'll give up on Windows before doing the same with Android. With Android being an open source project, I choose to be somewhat optimistic that anything is possible if not now, perhaps before too long. Second, I can SURF the web on my Shiny, Ancient & Modern Android toy! In fact, I'm beginning to do it so much better with great results in Android land than in Windows. Once I grasp a better use of this Android tablet I have here on my desk, all my Windows computers will have their graves dug. I'll stick them in their respective graves as soon as the hard drive on which they reside die naturally. May be that's another five years from today, but it won't make a difference for me. I don't want them to be resuscitable. Third, I wish I were intelligent enough to get into programming! Sadly, I'm not. Else, I shall have attempted to take on the project myself if nothing more, but for experimental purposes. Fourth, Excel, Word and Powerpoint have crept into Android land! These were once exclusively Windows preserves. My haunch is that if these are portable, anything is possible with a screen reader as well. Who knows? V F O could read this and elect to CORNER my thought process by introducing, you guessed it, Shark for Windows--did I say Shark? Sorry, that should have been Jaws, but you get my drift! When it comes to CRACKING THE CODE, that doesn't have to come from V F O or whatever name it calls itself! Jaws code is CRACKED all the time and many folks, whether you believe it or not, are using the silly screen reader at NO EXTRA cost! Window-Eyes, because of its licensing scheme, was FAR TOO DIFFICULT to crack. Now that it's dead, I remain hopeful that, at some point in time, someone will CRACK IT, play with it, and ROLL it out for all. I just hope that whoever succeeds in doing that will do the rolling out on the Android platform using AOSP and thus avoid V F O's belly ache. Mind you, I'm not saying it will happen; I am merely trying to be somewhat hopeful! I may win or lose; whichever way it goes, by the time my hypothesis comes to play, I probably won't know much about Windows computers/screen readers anymore; hence the SELFISH reason, if you wish to call it that, why I want to see Window-Eyes as a viable screen reader on the Android platform. Debby, it's the death of Window-Eyes that's KICKING ME off the Windows OS completely. Though I am still using Windows machines, I'm doing so until each one dies and I plunk it down the drain of a landfill near me. As a wee, small business owner, I can't tell you how much time GW Micro, Inc. spent with me in helping to ensure that all the apps I deploy for work serve me well. Let me approach V F O with scripting issues and I better be ready to SHELL OUT no less than $200-$250 per hour for scripting. I know too well that vocational rehabilitation in my corner won't pay for that! It will cost well over $15,000! And my company will have to keep shortchanging me on my paycheck as its life will be mortgaged to V F O till FOLD UP do us part! My migration is slow, but it will happen; for work-related purposes and personal stuff as well, it shall be Android every step of the way! In this new world, I shan't be at the MERCY of V F O and its cohorts. Though I'll never get an answer one way or another, I wonder what could have been different if GW Micro, Inc. issued an IPO and anyone who wanted to could become a part owner by buying GW Micro, Inc. stocks! I've never heard of any adaptive technology equipment manufacturer doing that; yet, in the mainstream, small companies, like WhatsApp and Skype built themselves into viable operations before their owners sold them for more money than they could ever spend! Would it have been much too much to manage? I am sure that an equity firm could have helped to coordinate things such that everything would run smoothly. RE: contacting Doug.
Chief Dennis, technology will overtake NFB and force it to THINK OUT OF THE BOX! Remember, it was against tactile markings on the dollar bill to make it easy for you and I to identify. It actually filed what in law is known as AMICUS BRIEF, in layman's and laywoman's language, FRIEND OF THE COURT brief in support of the appeal by the Bush Administration. Guess what? Common sense prevailed, the appeal was lost and the Supreme Court refused to take on the case. But why didn't NFB want tactile markings on the dollar bill? Simple. It would have made it possible for it to continue MILKING me by selling me a note teller at $50 or more. Now, I get the so-called note teller for free until the Department of Treasury begins rolling out accessible dollar bills! Well, not a big loss because it made it up by selling its KNFB Reader for $99.99! I didn't however buy it at that price: Thanks to what Android does well, I paid $19.99! Even now, I barely use it. I am constantly looking for something in the mainstream that's even cheaper and much better and with regular updates to boot. As for state agencies, they are constantly STRAPPED FOR CASH! It's a reason why one MUST SPEND ENDLESS HOURS trying to JUSTIFY the need for this and that. Eventually, they'll be forced to seek out cheaper alternatives. Jaws best screen reader? Even though Window-Eyes is dead, there's so much that it does far better than Jaws! Try routing your cursor to the mouse pointer; Window-Eyes does a much, much better job of landing you on the element you need. If Jaws is the Thane and Cawdor, how come it doesn't give or grant unfettered access to the entire innards of Windows? I wish GW Micro, Inc. had elected to develop for the Android platform. I bet you, if it had, it shall have knocked ShinePlus out of the ballpark and give even Talkback a scary run! And, ah, if the price is NOT TOO HIGH, it will GAIN MANY MORE customers worldwide via the Google PlayStore. Denis, when Window-Eyes was a sick, comatose child with no drugs left in the arsenal to propel it back to life, we said so and were rebuffed by many. Look what happened! Those of us who knew and were not afraid or ashamed to say so came out swinging like champions that won all four championships--World Series, Super Bowl, The NBA, Hockey and more! If there's still enough breathable air left in these bones of mine, the I TOLD YOU SO moment may jolly well get the Big Ben ringing again even though it has been shut down until 2021 for renovation. Well, Michael, I once opined that the war Freedom Scientific could not win in the courts, was well fought and won outside; with its cohorts and coterie of friends, it succeeded in drowning the boat! The merger with AI Square came to me as a surprise; I didn't want to see it happen, but what voice do I have? I long for the day when all these adaptive equipment developers/manufacturers can TRADE THEIR STOCKS publicly; may be, just may be, they'll have better stability! RE: nfl game pass
Sis Pam, I haven't gone to Cors Field, our baseball stadium yet! Since most games are played at night, it has been tough picking a day in which to go. If possible, I'd like to go to a day game, but I'll bring my headset AM/FM radio to the ballpark else I'll be left in the dust. I did go to the Denver Broncos stadium a few times without a radio of course. That, I wouldn't do again! When I walked around a few ponds in Europe, I detested listening to Tv calls for English Football, sorry, soccer! I always preferred listening to the games on the radio. Upon return to the U.S. though, I thought that Tv game calls here would be more exciting. I was wrong and it didn't take too long to find out. Radio will always be my personal preference when it comes to listening to any game calls and descriptions. I have enjoyed the guys who do it here in my clan and on ESPN radio stations around here. RE: nfl game pass
Tom, what happened to me wasn't an Android thing! As I said, I should have extracted the .APK file for keeps, but I didn't! All my apps, except for the Football Radio one installed with no problems. What I later discovered was that the author chose to convert the apps into two separate ones. Previously, everything was contained in one app and all I had to do was choose College or Pro football in the drop-down list. If I had extracted the .APK before performing a factory reset, I wouldn't have had the problem. It's ok though; I typically don't follow college football much. I can, if I so choose, get college football broadcasts on ESPN stations in my clan! RE: nfl game pass
Kevin, you do have a point! The trouble with Tv football commentary is that the folks describing the game typically keep engaging sometimes in irrelevant chatter and barely keep pace with the game. Around my friends, I would listen to football on the radio using a headset with built-in AM/FM radio; when I yell out "TOUCH DOWN," they get mad at me. Why? It hadn't been shown on Tv yet. It takes them about another 20 seconds or so to see it. My friends don't want me getting too excited at yelling out "touch down" when my team gets one. They rely on Tv, radio conveys the info much faster and they don't understand why that is. I too find listening to the games on Tv extremely boring with very little information about the game being passed to me in a way that makes real sense. Unless I can sit in the broadcast booth, I won't plan on going to the Broncos stadium anymore! I can't follow the game, the colleagues I am with are busy watching it, and they won't describe any aspect of it to me. I like going to the soccer stadium because there's an announcer who does describe the goings-on on the field in some shape or form, though never as good as what will be done on radio. But oh well, what do I know? Just an insignificant specie playing tag along in all the wrong places,
RE: nfl game pass
Sometime back, on my Shiny Android toy, I purchased an app aptly named Football Radio. With this app, I can pretty much listen to any game in any market provided there's no lock out! Though I am in Bronco Land, I do enjoy following Seattle, Phoenix, Giants and Panthers now and then. For Broncos, I listen on my regular radio unless I am out of base. I'm not sure I can get PRESEASON games on this app, but I will try tonight. The app is not bad really, but it can use some work on it to make it even better. It had a college component; however, when I did a Factory Reset on my phone, I lost it and the developer won't process me a refund. My foggy head and brain both failed themselves; they should have extracted the .APK of the app for keeps before performing a factory reset! Oh well, it was only 99 cents at the time I made the purchases. So, I'll sulk, soak and suck this one in and hope that the app won't disappoint me in a few weeks. I've not succeeded in conquering baseball; I don't want to pay the monthly subscription for MLB.com At Bat! See, how selfish I am? Anyway, I just need it for when I am away from base; I try to stay away from going too far into the boondoggles when the seasons for the games are on; but, alas, I do find myself falling flat on my eyebrows. It's what I get for being such a simpleton! Guess I'll learn in the next life if I choose to be part of it. I sure hope I made you laugh a weebit; if not, I'll try again next time out! Loy, try Insert-Dash on the numpad row of keys. That's the same key used for the Window-Eyes Mouse Pointer. Then you move with Insert-4 and 6 back and forward. Sometimes it's not consistent;when that occurs, trying routing PC to Jaws, insert-Enter. You do this with the NumLock off of course. When you press Insert-Dash with the NumLock off, it reads: Route Jaws to PC. Ok, if I'm wrong, I'll let others straighten me out so I can learn what I may have missed. RE: updated all of my 35 apps
Tom, as a nonconformist, Window-Eyes was everything to me! Now that it's gone, I am hastily learning to use an Android tablet. Why? Because I want to ditch Windows and its associated screen readers; I will have two devices: An Android phone for everyday talk to the world, and Android tablets for business use. I will not pay a blue cent to have scripts rewritten for Jaws in order to be able to use apps that work almost literally out of the box using Window-Eyes. I'm not taking the Jaws transfer offer, and I'm never upgrading to Windows10 or any of its cousins! I'll keep running both Windows XP Pro and the Windows7 Pro computers that I have and just let them die naturally so that I can commit their souls to Purgatory. In the long run anyway, Android will be the cheapest alternative for me. And I won't miss Windows when I kick it out, but I do certainly miss so many folks from GW Micro, and I'd have long-lasting memories of Window-eyes! RE: accessible web hosting services
Darrell, this might depend largely on what you are trying to accomplish with web hosting. That aside, I recommend you take a hard look at: www.hostgator.com www.ixwebhosting.com is yet another web hosting platform you can give a try. Some domain registrars do offer web hosting, you may also want to check those out. There's also www.softkin.com/ The price is reasonably right on this one in that you pay a fixed price once and get it for life if memory serves; however, depending on what you are trying to accomplish, it may or may not be a good buy for you. RE: Behind in times.
David, I'll be the police watching if you dare throw out your computer, ; you know, I may just issue you a ticket with no court date. Just pay me and we'll both be good. Anyway, brother, nothing to worry about. Go ahead, download Jaws! When it comes to installation, you will need to turn Window-Eyes off until the installation is complete. You will most certainly need to do this in the Start-Up menu for Window-Eyes just to be sure it is NOT launching itself when a reboot occurs during the course of Jaws installation. As for which one to download? Oh brother! Go for the one with Tandem. This will enable you to connect to my computer in the event that I may need some help from you. Sorry, I always use my own computer as examples, but actually it could be anyone else's computer if such a one is also running Jaws with the Tandem add-on. It is used purely for REMOTE ACCESS! I thought the one with Tandem incorporated would be a good choice because the Window-Eyes you currently have does support remote access, so apples to apples, oranges to oranges ... You get my drift! And, V F O Group should give you an authorization code or scheme that will fully authorize Jaws with Tandem. Now I don't know if Tandem is available for a 32Bit OS, but it is certainly available for the 64Bit OS! Now that you have Jaws in the palm of your hands, it's time to knock off that terrifying scare, shall we? We'll begin by bringing out that charcoal grill and laying some meat on it! Just the sweet smell coming from the grill should send those fears fleeing towards the exit gate. I'll go load the truck and bring in the fine goodies and trimmings we need to make the time pass by without us checking our watches constantly. Butch, you didn't break any confidence when you discussed the death of Window-Eyes long before the fan base saw the handwriting on the wall! You know what it is with the blind: Denial! It's a good pain killer pill and only the brave refuse to take it. Even when Sis Reeva posted Tweeter notes that finally announced Window-Eyes's obituary, she was hounded and, if she had been Jesus, she shall have been crucified on the cross of false pretense even when the proof of the eating was already in the pudding! Sadly, the truth hardly ever make blind folks free; rather, it keeps most of us in solitary confinements! It was easy to know that Window-Eyes was comatose and dying! The disappearances of those who were regular helpers on the list was a good telltale sign that something was terribly wrong upstairs in GW Micro land! When the merger with AI Squared was announced, I was miffed beyond proportions. I knew that the lightning had stricken and the wildfire season for Window-Eyes was real. Anyway, you and I and many others who saw the London bridge falling down can find solace in the truth we stood for long before the world knew it. Ok, back to my regularly scheduled program which is learning to use an Android tablet. It has been a slow process for me, but I'll get it! With Window-Eyes dead, anything Windows is DEAD for me as well. I'll keep my Windows machines until the hard drives DIE NATURALLY, and Window-Eyes will keep NURSING THEM to health until they both retire and find the Recycle Bin!
