It seems the option The oldest message begins a thread by
Subject/From/To does not work. At least I can see no difference
between en- and disabling it, using it on View Threads by Subject
(Alt +2).
It seems to work on View Threads by From.

- the folder tree doesn't readjust to fill the space provided
- the scroll-bar disappears. I have to use the mouse or arrow keys to
scroll the upper folders back into view.
