I recently purchased a new Packard Bell PC IMED 2412 on the 7/2/08 and I have
downloaded the free open office from HTTP://download.openoffice.org/index.html,
however, there does not appear to be any trace of it on the desktop? I tried to

You don't have to replace anything. ODS files are spreadsheets in the
ISO Standard file

Assuming you're running Windows, double click on the file you downloaded
to start the installation. After that completes, you should see an
OpenOffice folder icons

created with Office 2007. That may be the problem. If the extension of your word

something like an asc11 filter asking what characters format and so
