One other thing I failed to mention is that I remember when I first signed

still boots up however the hard drive fails to be recognized. I know when
we converted to using the PC, the Amiga had emails on it from the PINE
I never knew you were from Australia! Or for that matter anyone on
this list.
Id be therowing up a new thread with a link to see the story of an
Aussie bug we rescued here in Karachi.
Stay tuned folks!
Please tell us more about this Karachi find!

Erin!
I stand corrected, you are not from aussie land, only you gal is.
Still Im sure folks would enjoy the Aussie bug rescue story.

Thanks for the kind words Asad. :) I saw many bay windows Kombis there (as
they call them) with roo bars on them. Probably more
I think Erin has a good point,
We all now take the www for granted now. Casually browsing thru we dont
remember days only a few years ago when VW knowledge could only be tapped from
book/mags or local eccentric old timers who talked only after a lot of

Erin,
I think I posted the link on this list. If not, my bad, I was supposed to.
Will try to keep updating this thread with pics and more info. Have to
downsize a few pics plus take some closeups of the rear view mirror with the
kangaroo VW logo. It is carefully stored in my bedroom
Excellent!
I was going to ask some things on the lines of this topic today.
Today I got two antennae. These are made in China and fit to the post 67
beetles on the cowl on the LHS. Got one for my daily driver 68 and the other to
keep as spare. These are cheap and the only non VW

Have a question about the tarboard firewall insulation. Im sure Bert
would be interested in this.
Many years ago my brother Suleman made a very lucky find by locating an
NOS firewall insulation tarboard. He purchased it and we put in on the 68 daily
driver. It was of
Asad,
More than likely the very cheapest version. I just did the replacement on
an original 3rd owner 67 yesterday and instead of buying the $80
resoration quality firewall from cip1, I bought the cheaper
stuffalmost paper thin, and they could just roll it up and put it in

Guys,
Is it possible to bolt on a complete late 60s engine and gearbox onto a
59 bug?? My bastardised-to-the-core 59 rag project came with such a package.
I remember people say that early engine BAYS were different. Now the 59s
engine bay has been cut in two areas almost in
Guys,
Want to share something! Its perhaps the most original 66 bug in
Pakistan. The kid got it as a present from his grandfather!!
The new owner was thinking of customising this rare gem but thankfully I
knocked some sense into him before it was too late.
Enjoy the pics at:
Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes I think you are right. So what I have is aftermarket and could not
be regarded as original. Seems like Id have to make do.
I think you are right about the thickness. I could measure the new

I made an interesting local discovery today.
The local VW spares shop coughed up some NOS towel rails!! There were only
some odd pieces, five rear towel rails and three over riders of the pre 67
type. Not in perfect shape but very very good.
I examined the towel rails but could not
Oki,
I found a chrome shift rod at the scrapyard. The scrapper had no idea what
VW it came off but we have stong suspicion over a type 3 Variant. I saw the
same shifter on thesamba a while back (missed the link) and it was also
advertised as coming from a doubtful source.
Its chromed and

You know Asad,
Ah so I do see you are a RHD country! Your English is really good too.
How'd you learn to type it so well?
I guess for anyone, it's what they are used to growing up with. I find that
since I'm a right handed person, that I can find the little notches for the
gear shift pattern easier.
be careful the thin non original stuff does not get sucked in wards and
block the fan opening.

Ah yes!
Thats something to look out for.
I will search for a better material and use this new firewall as a template to
cut out a set. Alternatively if I have to go with this cheap repro, I should
make sure that all those pointed strips on the firewall are holding down the
material well.
Marc,
Thanks for your valuable input on this.
I gather from a 'smaller engine compartment opening' the opening you see
in the horizontal plane if the engine is out of the car? Or is it the opening
in the vertical firewall plane?

Indeed its a gem.

Suleman is doing well,
He is still in California, driving Mercs instead of VDubs. Well at least
he has not gone off German metal. He is still a listee but nowadays just lurks
due to lack of time. Im hoping he'd read these posts and chip in.
Im glad that you saw the pictures and
In the process of changing over to 35PDSIT carbs on a 1600DP engine,
I could not get the idle even up to 850 rpm. No adjustment of the
two idle screws helped.
Then I measured the compression on the 3/4 side and found values like 75/75.
Long ago, I had purchased the gauge set to do a leak-down
Please calibrate your gauge. It sounds like the gauge is malfunctioning.
With 8.5 compression ratio, you should read 110-120 psig.

I did notice that 'indexing pin' on the pre 67 shifters.
I think that is what keeps them from rotating. The post 68 ones can be
rotated as you mentioned.
So for fitting the chromed example Id have to cut n file...now Id
put that on the back burner, unless I experiment

Asad,
With respect to the gauges, the range seems to be OK, but you did not mention
the sweep i.e. the arc the needle swings through. I try to find gauges with
270 degree sweep; this gives a more precise reading. Many of the cheaper gauges
have a sweep of only 30-45 degrees.

I'm having some problems with my stock fuel pump and
am considering yanking it for a Facet pump I have
laying around the shop. Last time I ran it was on a
pair of IDAs without a regulator. I'm pretty sure I
need to regulate the flow to the 30pict, just not sure
how much. 2lbs? 3lbs? Anyone?
Guys,
Today I spent some time roaming around the local spare parts market. I am
considering buying some aftermarket gauges to mount along with an tachometer I
got a while back and a type 3 VDO clock in a custom made console for the 68

Asad, your comment about wondering how he could shift with his right

I suspected the antennas were dealer installed, but was surprised at

That HAD to have been a snug fit, particularly with

fit without a little trimming of the rear engine tin.
Perhaps someone had already done this on your engine?
