A further piece of information on this. If i right mouse on either the iPhoto or Photos libraries and select Open Package Contents I can see the contents and the Masters folder which shows the Year/Month/Date hierarchy and in turn the JPG files within the bottom level folder, so they are there!

Thanks Tony, I'm pleased everything is resolved. I forgot to mention 'Check the Trash' in iPhoto. It's amazing how many people forget to 'Empty' the iPhoto Trash - and when I mention it, they check and empty it - and get back GBs of space that those hundreds of photos were taking up ;-)
