Hi Daniel & Kevin,

That's sounds the quickest & best way to go Kevin.
I've also got some 'stuff' for in a Box that might be useful for your charity
projects.
I'll bring the box up on my next trip to Nikki's place for you & you can then
arrange pickup from her. I'll need to give you her new address as they have
moved since the last time you picked up from her house ;-)

Re: Mavericks

2016-11-23 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Kevin

If helps, I’ve also got a direct installer that takes you straight to 10.9.5 in
one install. So you don’t need the update. It runs off a bootable thumb drive.
It will do the install in one go without then having to do the update, if that
makes things easier.

Can clone it to a thumb drive if you like. Just let me know.

Think I’ve also got some older iMac’s for you as well sitting aside. So welcome
to collect them and I can clone the thumb drive to your thumb drive if you like.
Just let me know. which ever is easier :)

Kind regards
Daniel

Normally third-party software/add-ons etc need to be updated or they can
 cause issues.

I would suggest you download install OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo)
 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1746
Do the normal preparation first: Repair Permissions - BackUp - Install the
Combo - Repair Permissions after installation completes.

You could also Go to System Preferences - Accessibility and for the mouse
options or Trackpad options and set scrolling with inertia.

Hi Bill,

Mavericks is up to version 10.9.3 now.
Have you checked that Logitech have updated drivers for Mavericks for your
model mouse?
Normally third-party software/add-ons etc need to be updated or they can cause
issues.

The bad news is that none of the software you use will work with Mavericks,
since they all require Rosetta to be active, which was discontinued by Apple in
Lion (Mac OS 10.7).

The good news is that there are excellent free or low-cost substitutes for all
of them. It’s difficult to comment fourth in details since I don’t know to what
extent you use products such as Office and Abobe’s Creative Suite, but I can
tell you from personal experience as someone who has recent versions of both
products running under Mavericks, that I rarely use either of them.

Pages, Numbers and Keynote can take care of most of your needs when it comes to
Office, and if not there is always Open Office or any of its variants such as
NeoOffice. Many of the basic photo manipulation tasks of Photoshop are easily
handled by iPhoto or even Preview. For anything more sophisticated there are
apps such as Pixelmator, Acorn and others which are faster and easier to use,
and use all of Apple’s modern technologies as well, unlike the Adobe products.
There are also good substitutes for Illustrator, and the Mavericks version of
Apple’s own Preview makes Acrobat Professional all but obsolete.

If you’re not happy to use Apple’s Mail, there’s always Thunderbird, which is
the basis for the current version of Eudora anyway.

Unfortunately, you’re not going to be able to escape this situation. You’ll
certainly be faced with it if you ever want to buy a new Apple computer.

Re: Mavericks is it worth upgrading?

2014-04-10 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Peter,

If your software won't run in Lion, the software won't run in Mavericks!

Starting with Lion, Apple removed Rosetta, the software that enabled older,
PowerPC applications to run on Intel-based Macs. As a result, upgrading to
Mavericks entails living without software that requires Rosetta.

To find out what PowerPC software is on your disk, follow these steps:

Use System Profiler to check all your Applications.

Go to “About This Mac” under the Apple Menu, and click the “More Info” button.
This will launch System Profiler.

Scroll down the list of contents at the left of the window until you get to the
“Software” section and click on “Applications”.

Give the list a few moments to populate, then look for your application in the
list.
Widen the window if necessary until you see the “Kind” column.
You can sort this column by clicking on the column header to make searching
easier.

Any items labelled “Classic” or “PowerPC” will not work in Lion.

ONLY Universal Intel will run in Lion OS X 10.7 or Mountain Lion OS X 10.8 or
Mavericks OS X 10.9

RoaringApps keeps maintains a wiki listing hundreds of Mac and iOS apps and
the current status of their compatibility with various operating system
versions, as reported by users.

Although this list is neither exhaustive nor definitive, it provides a quick
way to check on the applications most important to you.

(http://roaringapps.com/apps?index=ain case the inline link above doesn't
work for you.)

Yes I agree Stephen. I have 4 MacBooks in the house with Mavericks and we've
had no issues.

One thing I would suggest to Ken, do a google search for use of Mavericks with
your brand and model of printer. See if there are people having issues with
that model. My Epson no problem.

You may have peculiar 3rd party software too which may or may not be
problematic, again just a quick google search will expose any gross issues.

My experience with mavericks has been positive. I hope it is for Ken if you
launch the updater!

Re: Mavericks 10.9.2 and Mail

2014-02-27 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Ronni

Thanks for response, and for improving my understanding of the black mysteries.

It has nothing to do with iCloud as Apple's Mail servers do not use a TLS
 Certificate for authentication.

Good to know that it is not associated with iCloud. I don’t understand iCloud
and I am hoping it will all go away.

[TLS Certificate] is actually a generic setting in Mail that can be applied
to any Mail server you have configured. It is used for client authentication
as an additional layer of security if your mail server happens to require it
(most do not -- it tends to be used only in corporate environments). Think
of it as an additional password, basically.

This seems logical (now).

You are seeing '“TLS Certificate = none”
Click the drop-down for TLS Certificate... and see if there is anything there
 to select.

I would not change anything if your Mail Accounts are behaving correctly!

Yes, each Mail account has a long Apple TLS Certificate number. I never had
problems with either gmail or iiNet mail associated with the upgrade to
Mavericks (luck perhaps). Gmail is IMAP and iiNet mail is POP. I won’t
change anything!I will read up on encryption at some later date.

A side comment: I can download all the POP mail to both iPad and iMac without
mutual interference (or loss of messages), and also keep the last 25 mail
messages on the iiNet website for convenient email reading when away from home.
This seems to be at odds with the recent advice on how POP works, and the call
to convert mail accounts from POP to IMAP!

Cheers
Alan

 Hi Alan,

My Mail Preferences have NOT changed since installing OS X 10.9.2 update.
Are you having any problems with one or both mail accounts since installing
 the update?

TLS Certificate - Transport Layer Security (TLS)

Use a TLS certificate for security. Some POP and IMAP mail servers require
computers that connect to them to provide a certificate proving their
 identity.

It has nothing to do with iCloud as Apple's Mail servers do not use a TLS

This setting has no bearing on whether your actual IMAP or SMTP sessions with
the server are encrypted or not; that is controlled by the Use SSL settings
found on the Advanced page (for IMAP connections) and on the individual
SMTP server configurations for outgoing Mail (you can access these by
clicking on the drop-down list of Outgoing Mail Servers and choosing Edit
 SMTP Server List.
As long as Use SSL is enabled, your IMAP and SMTP sessions are encrypted.

Note that the TLS Certificate option only appears if you have a valid
certificate in your OS X Keychain that could be used for this purpose; the
option is hidden otherwise which likely explains why it is not appearing on
my MacBook Pro OS X 10.9.2

So to answer your question Should the TLS certificate be selected/activated

 I don't know

Hi Alan,

My Mail Preferences have NOT changed since installing OS X 10.9.2 update.
Are you having any problems with one or both mail accounts since installing the
update?

TLS Certificate - Transport Layer Security (TLS)

Use a TLS certificate for security. Some POP and IMAP mail servers require
computers that connect to them to provide a certificate proving their identity.

It has nothing to do with iCloud as Apple's Mail servers do not use a TLS
Certificate for authentication.

This is actually a generic setting in Mail that can be applied to any Mail
server you have configured. It is used for client authentication as an
additional layer of security if your mail server happens to require it (most do
not -- it tends to be used only in corporate environments). Think of it as an
additional password, basically.

This setting has no bearing on whether your actual IMAP or SMTP sessions with
the server are encrypted or not; that is controlled by the Use SSL settings
found on the Advanced page (for IMAP connections) and on the individual SMTP
server configurations for outgoing Mail (you can access these by clicking on
the drop-down list of Outgoing Mail Servers and choosing Edit SMTP Server
List.
As long as Use SSL is enabled, your IMAP and SMTP sessions are encrypted.

Note that the TLS Certificate option only appears if you have a valid
certificate in your OS X Keychain that could be used for this purpose; the
option is hidden otherwise which likely explains why it is not appearing on my
MacBook Pro OS X 10.9.2

So to answer your question Should the TLS certificate be selected/activated
for each mail account?
I don't know
You are seeing '“TLS Certificate = none”
Click the drop-down for TLS Certificate... and see if there is anything there
to select.

I would not change anything if your Mail Accounts are behaving correctly!

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Gary

Yes, sometimes pays to read the forums for those sort of things before doing
it,..as that gives you an idea of the damages it can cause.

That MacPro will take Lion (10.7.5) OK, which would then give you iCloud
syncing and a few other features as well, so that can be an option.
Otherwise to get syncing with 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) you can do it in a round
about way to get it working

Re: mavericks on unsupported mac pro

2014-02-21 Thread Dark1
Hi Gary.

I agree with what Daniel and Ronni have already said about being very cautious
when it comes to these things but personally, if it were me, I’d be happy to
try it out on the strict provisor that I had the time to commit to making it
work and I would definitely do it on a completely separate HDD in addition to
having bootable backups.

I haven’t spent a great deal of time looking into this specific kind of hack
but I do have a reasonable understanding about the hackintosh world (booting
Mac OS on windows hardware). From what gather this hack is based around using
a custom boot loader (which resides on a hidden partition of your HDD that your
install is contained on) because you need to have a 64bit one for mavericks and
the native one is only 32 bit. The other part of it probably involves changing
some info so that the computer thinks it’s a MacPro 2.1 and therefore supported
by mavericks.

I wouldn’t expect there to be any potential for cross over trouble if you kept
everything isolated on separate drives and had an extensive backup system but I
would definitely want to fully research what I was doing before doing it.
Daniel has already suggested that you might be able to get the features you
want from ML which would be supported on your machine natively and, as Ronni
advised, you should really consider if it’s going to be worth all the effort
and the potential risk (even if very small) if you are using this machine for
work.

Hope this helps
Ruben

Sorry I forgot to add one more thing that you might consider to be important.

I’m not sure whether doing something like this would be against Apple’s EULA.
I know that running a hackintosh certainly is against their EULA and that this
specific hack has similarities to running a hackintosh so if this was important
to you I guess you’d have to read the EULA which would probably take a very
long time.

When you do the preparation work and correctly install and then do the 'Post

Re: Mavericks Update

2014-02-02 Thread Chris Burton
Hi Ronni

Thanks very much for your great summary of what to do for the update to
Mavericks, as I too have been thinking about this for the last few weeks!

However Im not sure I can as my MBPro is running 10.6.8 and I have another
older machine which Cath uses, running even earlier OSX!

Is this the case Ronni? Would I have to first update to Lion? Is it worth doing
this or should I persist until I upgrade my machines?

Many thanks and best regards

on how many files you have and the speed of your CPU and disk.

During this time, you’ll notice a lot of disk activity (along with, perhaps,
somewhat sluggish overall performance), and you’ll see a pulsing dot in the

Re: Mavericks Update

2014-02-02 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Chris,

In the link I sent in my previous email:
 First thing to do is:
Get your Mac ready for Mavericks OS X 10.9

Gives list of compatible models that can install Mavericks
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid-2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro 15-inch (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Pro 17-inch (Late 2007 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
(Note that while all of the above computers can install Mavericks, some
features, such as Power Nap, AirPlay mirroring and extended desktop, and
AirDrop, have stricter requirements.)

Also if you are going from OS X 10.6.8 you need to check you don't have any
Applications that are labelled Classic or PowerPC as they will NOT work in
Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
ONLY Universal Intel will run in Mountain Lion Mavericks

You also require a lot of Free Space on your Hard Drive to run Mavericks well.
If your Mac meets the requirements for Mavericks your Applications are
compatible you can upgrade from Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 to Mavericks.

If you go to my website and download my Tutorial Prepare for Installation of
Mountain Lion OS X 10.8 you will find all the details.
It is the same as 'Prepare for Installation' details as required for
Mavericks.

http://ronnibrown.net/tutorials/prepare-for-mountain-lion/index.html
If you do download the tutorial I would appreciate a donation. Details are on
my website.

Is this the case Ronni? Would I have to first update to Lion? Is it worth
doing this or should I persist until I upgrade my machines?

Re: Mavericks

Hi Walter,

The 'Pie Chart' is no longer an option, especially since Mavericks has new
memory management routines (ie, memory compression) that make the charting of
memory usage less straightforward.
Apple has switched to a new Memory Pressure approach to viewing memory usage,
which is available in the Memory section of Activity Monitor, but so far has
not been added as a Dock icon option.

Re: Mavericks

2013-12-10 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Walter,

A Document I would recommend you download and read is the October 2013 - OS X
Mavericks Core Technologies Overview PDF
Go to this Link
http://images.apple.com/media/us/osx/2013/docs/OSX_Mavericks_Core_Technology_Overview.pdf

On Page 7: - especially read the sections explaining: Compressed Memory Power
Efficiency

OS X Mavericks virtual memory compression is a big win for anyone on the
margins of not quite enough memory.
Virtual memory compression means that real work gets done faster by idling CPU
cores less often and for a shorter duration, often coming entirely for “free”
by using CPU cores that are otherwise idle anyway.

With virtual memory compression, there is no disk activity and the memory
compression itself is extremely fast. Hence compressed virtual memory is a
massive net win: while there is some CPU utilization for the compression but
real work on all CPU cores gets back “on task” in far less time, rather than
idling the CPU cores waiting for disk I/O to complete.

Activity Monitor (in my opinion) is possibly the most improved utility in
Mavericks.
Activity Monitor now allows you to check energy usage through a dedicated tab.
You can also get a glimpse by clicking the battery in your menubar. On top of
that, you can visit the View menu to change Activity Monitor’s icon to CPU
usage (and other) meters and run System Diagnostics.

View system memory usage

Click Memory to see the following:

Physical Memory: The amount of RAM installed.
Memory Used: The amount of RAM being used and not immediately available.
Virtual Memory: The amount of disk or flash drive space being used as virtual
memory.
Swap Used: The space on your drive being used to swap unused files to and from
RAM.
App Memory: The amount of space being used by apps.
Wired Memory: Memory that can’t be cached to disk, so it must stay in RAM. This
memory can’t be borrowed by other apps.
Compressed: The amount of memory in RAM that is compressed.
File Cache: The space being used to temporarily store files that are not
currently being used.

 Hi Walter,

The 'Pie Chart' is no longer an option, especially since Mavericks has new
memory management routines (ie, memory compression) that make the charting
 of memory usage less straightforward.
Apple has switched to a new Memory Pressure approach to viewing memory
usage, which is available in the Memory section of Activity Monitor, but so
far has not been added as a Dock icon option.

Hi Guys

I have just updated my newish mini with Mavericks and started wondering about
my MacBook Pro which is currently running 10.6.8.

MacBook Pro 3,1
Processor 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Mavericks says MacBook Pro (mid-/late 2007 or newer) which the 3,1 is.

Would those in the know advise updating system or leaving well alone?

Thanks

Since there is no apparent technical reason not to upgrade, you have to rule
out any personal reasons, eg, are you dependent upon any legacy software on
your Macbook Pro such as AppleWorks or anything else which is not compatible
with Mavericks? You'll have to do a little research in this area if you haven't
done so already.

Assuming that you're comfortable that your working environment won't be
compromised by compatibility issues, you have appropriate backups, and your
Macbook Pro has enough space on the hard drive, I can't see any reason not to
proceed. With the significant differences in the feature list between Mavericks
and 10.6.8, you'll eventually find that working in two increasingly different
OSes will become frustrating.

Having said all that, proceed at your own risk... :-)

Re: Mavericks-Time Capsule TM drives don't appear on the desktop anymore when a backup is in progress

2013-10-29 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Brian,

My Time Machine backups have always been working perfectly in Mavericks, that
has never been a problem.
My post was about the Time Capsule / Time Machine backup not showing on the
Desktop when Time Machine is backing up.

Do you use Time Machine to backup to a Time Capsule Data Disk... Or do you use
Time Machine to backup to an external drive attached to your MBP?

Cheers,

 Hi Severin,

Stop looking, you won't find it!
The 50 limit option to limit the number of emails displayed in the mail app
was removed in iOS7 and you can not change back to iOS6.
Apple need to hear from you if you want to see a change:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/ lodge a complaint under iPhone or iPad and
request this feature to be returned.
There are a lot of people who want it changed back to what it was in iOS6.

Re: Mavericks-Time Capsule TM drives backups - retitled for accuracy

2013-10-29 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi Ronni

I back up to a 2TB Time Capsule in extension(?) mode, my household wireless
network includes an Airport Express as the main access to the modem, Airport
Extreme - in 'extension mode' - for other external HD storage - movies/tv, and
MacMini for the TV.

After updating to Mavericks TimeMachine wouldn't backup, it acknowledged the
data disk but timed out when backing up.

Apple Support Community had this listed as an issue, so I thought I would
mention it incase other members had this backup issue.

After turning the entire network off it self sorted, found the data disk and of
it went merrily backing up, with the oldest back acknowledge as 22 Dec 2012 -
so all is good.

One improvement I have noticed in Mavericks is when my MBP wakes after opening
lid or button tap the password accepts the first character instead of
highlighting it blue and erasing it as the second character is entered! so, no
double entering in the first character very time.

That is a real help, Ronni. Terminal is interminable for non-regular Terminal
users! But why hide the Library in the first place? No one in their right
mind is going to seriously monkey with it and I am sure it will require at
least an administrator password like the Applications folder to pull anything
out of it.
Maybe I am living in an older world dream but I find all this security stuff a
real pain - like the rigmarole to make the IOS7.0.3 update tick after
installing it earlier today.
What has happened to the limit on mail retained in IOS7 Mail? Used to be 50
but I currently have 318 showing for two users and counting! Can not find
where to change it.
Enjoy this glorious, sunny, late spring day everyone, soon out tongues will be
hanging out when summer finally bites.

Re: Mavericks - Mail in Mavericks Changes the Gmail Equation

2013-10-24 Thread Paul Willemse
Hi Ronni,

Do you now if these problems apply to Gmail POP accounts as well? I had some
problems a long time ago with Gmail IMAP access and reverting to POP access
cured it so I never bothered with IMAP again.

BTW, I have not yet updated to Mavericks.

Regards,

Paul

Re: Mavericks - Mail in Mavericks Changes the Gmail Equation

2013-10-24 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Paul,

First: If you have to rely on Gmail, my suggestion is don't upgrade to
Mavericks just yet... wait until OS X 10.9.1 which should be available in the
next few weeks... And hopefully Apple will fix these issues.

I take it you have read the TidBITS article I linked to in my first email.

This extract below is taken from Macworld, I don't have the link handy sorry
but a google search will find it and more about the Gmail issues.

Gmail issues
Not all of the changes to Mail in Mavericks are entirely positive, particularly
if one or more of your email accounts is a Gmail account. Mail and Gmail have
never played particularly well together, in large part because Mail treats
Gmail as an IMAP account, and the way Gmail implements IMAP is pretty poor. But
in Mavericks, the situation is quite a bit worse.

The gist of the situation is that because of changes in how Mail handles Gmail
accounts, you may find that the first time you launch Mail under Mavericks,
Mail re-downloads all your Gmail messages, which could take a very, very long
time if you have a lot of archived email. In addition, sometimes Mail simply
doesn’t show messages that the Gmail website and other email apps (such as Mail
on your iOS device) do show. And if you use AppleScripts to process email
messages in Mail, there’s a good chance those scripts won’t work on your Gmail
accounts in Mavericks.

Joe in the TidBITS article explains a number of other issues relating to Mail’s
Gmail changes, and provides some suggestions for dealing with Gmail accounts.

There is conversations going on here:
