Adrien
CPU usage reported by top was around the 30%-40% mark with 16 players.
The celerons afaik are just P4's with small caches, so they should
perform the same in terms of CPU usage, it's just the fact that less
instructions can be put in the cache with a Celeron that makes them icky.
P4 and Xeon I've never compared as I don't own any Xeons, only P4's.
Xeon IMO is overkill for a gameserver though, I personally think it's
more economical to buy a heap of desktop grade machines because with the
way gameservers constantly need faster CPU's and more RAM, it's cheaper
just to replace the machines every year or so.
You should get about 2 maybe 3 12 player servers on a P4.

FYI http://www.theradianteye.com/p00pernickel_steamid.htm; is a bad

web properties.
However.
I will combine your 850 list and add the set of steamid's culled from
the log analysis that nabbed a bunch of myg0ts and other newly detected
cheaters and will update my list at
http://www.theradianteye.com/banned_user.txt (mirrored at
http://70.85.25.116/banned_user.txt) later today.
I will create a dedicated page for this showing the date/time of last
update.
In the near future I will host a web service for on-demand pulls and
subscriber notification services.
another project i am working on is a public near-real-time log parsing
web services that will accept logging from CSS servers and return
updated ban lists.
I have a ways to go on this one because the hueristics need time to
learn and lower the margin of error to a reasonable level .
Another component of this effort is a remote server admin system
deployed as web pages for both standard browsers and windows mobile
smart phone users.
(the smart phone thing will allow you to look busy in those snoozer
meetings while you admin your servers. a must have... lol...)
Mikee wrote:
Another update. I took the bans from this Steam Forums post
http://tinyurl.com/6f9er and also the bans I had at my three servers, in
addition to those that various players gave to me that I trust.
I then added those from several admins who have contacted me from this
HLDS
Server Email list, and from these two additional sites which I believe
are
also reliable:
http://www.theradianteye.com/p00pernickel_steamid.htm
http://tinyurl.com/3qoqo
I manually took out any duplicates, and updated my banned_users.cfg
file so
it now has 850 bans. This is being shared with as many server admins as
possible, and more are being added all the time. I started today with 350
bans.
Get the ban list of 850 Steam ID's here:
http://www.kain-9.com/server/banned_user.cfg and let me know if you
know of
more legitimate bans. This problem is still not fixed by Valve for HL2,
although there was a plugin that was independently developed which
seems to
have resolved my servers crashing so far. In any case, the more players
realize they will be permanently banned by a large network of server
admins,
the more effective we will be on our own.
This is probably the most intelligent use of this HLDS list that I can
think
of.

athlon64=modified opteron.

be a tad hotter than xeons, but hey, they do more work!
And if you go Dual Op..

Alexis is a bit on the upset side, naturally -- his company is in
serious trouble because of very obvious fraud, and waiting a few days
isn't really something he can afford to do. (If you look at the whois

of fraudulent activity. There is a pretty clear attempt there to
maximally obscure who has stolen the domain name -- this is clearly
not an innocent mistake.)

Yeah, but, home truths. There are registrars who will get out of bed at
night for a customer, and registrars who could give a shit if hell froze.
Just like ISPs and LEOs, neh?
Picking a registrar with a market share in the top 10 means that you get
1/share's worth of attention, which means 1/1488700 of Dotster's attention
(using 1/15 daily market share graph). Now, was that at the NetSol $35/yr
price point for customer care, or the GoDaddy $6.95/yr price point for
customer care.
I suppose everyone thinks that it (for some value of it) can't happen
to them, and that if it does, a wicked small amount of money will still
do more than the oil that lights the lamps at Hanukkah, because bad acts
are rare and all the dimes pile up into a shared fate insurance fund.
Well, now I'm really going to bed.

RTFM :). There you go: http://qoda.net/cssource/minimumadmin/doc/
Linux version is 1.0.0.20, beside of the newest win version which is
1.0.0.21.
And -another bad news- it's pretty buggy. But it won't kill the server
(after 1hr of testing) at last... and weapon restriction works fine
(even to
restrict map by map, not just in common, e.g. restrict awp only on
aztec...)

I think your best bet will be to check the admin mod website for more
info
on specifics.
Just to let you know the admin mod I use has a default.cfg file and
within
that the cvar is Autobuying 0
I doubt that would be any use to you as i'm using source but i'm sure
there
is the info available on the mod site.
never used it.. but i know amxmodx will work... im not sure if there
has been any updates to adminmod since autobuys were added, so you
might just be out of luck...

It may be because you allow auto buy which will bypass the
restriction.

I have the awp restricted from use by both sides. I know on maps
where the awp is lying on the ground it is usable. I have users
however using autobuys that can buy the weapon on maps like
de_747. How are they able to get by the weapon restriction?

[hlds_linux] Weird behavior from hlds 1.6

2005-01-08 Thread William Warren
This is a machine running fedora core 2 with all updates. Athlon
xp 3000+ and i gig of ram here is what goes on:
For some reason running screen makes the system startup one
instance..then after a minute or two a shadow instance shows up.
This makes the memory usage grow out of control and makes the
clients get that flood of UNPARSEABLE FIELD TYPE 0 entries in
their consoles. I have tried screen in every way i know how and
the servers continue to ghost. I have seen this with cs main and
private. What is stupid is this is not occurring on my RHEL clone.
Any ideas on why this ghosting is occurring?

That is the minimum time before the map changes. If the server is empty
it waits 2 minutes. Same thing if nobody does anything after the map
ends. I'm not sure what clients need to do, but hitting the +attack
button seems to work at least. I think only one player has to do this,
but it might wait for more, this is probably in the SDK code, if anyone

Just a bit of anecdotal deduction, here, but it sounds like mp_chattime
functionally sets the minimum time for people to chat, not the maximum
amount of time before it starts loading the next map. So if you set
mp_chattime to 5, it doesn't mean the map will necessarily start
changing 5 seconds after the last round's end, but rather that it will
allow players a minimum of 5 seconds to chat about the round before it
will allow player input to trigger the changing of maps. It seems like
it really does take an active input from a player (i.e. +attack) to
trigger the map change to take place, at least until it hits the
built-in 2 minutes limit.

Hello dear readers of the hlds_linux mailing list, dear VALVe Employees,
I just wanted to ask if anybody out there knows any anti-cheat tool
for Counter-Strike 1.6 which is usefully working at the moment.
As we all know, VAC is outdated since several months and CD has been
hacked lately. At the moment, there is no way of realizing a fair
competition regarding CS games. Both mainstream anti-cheat tools, VAC and
CD are not worth a penny right now.
Some days ago, when things regarding this CD - Crack went public we
(the ESL, the biggest european online gaming league) decided to stop
all our Counter-Strike Ladders. And this is not something we like to
do very often. Read more here if interested:

Please dont get me wrong, i am not trying to sound important here. But
i have to reach as many people as i can to try to find some
information about other possible, not much-known alternatives to
prevent cheating. The situation regarding cheats today is even worse
than it was some months ago. And it wont get any better. If you know
any tool which might be useful at the moment, please report it to me.
You may even contact me directly if you can help in any way. We are
definately interested in any way of cooperation for anything that you
might provide that can help us all.
Please dont let cheating prevail.

4 gig drive will be slow due to age, also memory speed is a concern.
Sounds like its a hardware problem that you wont get around. Might be
able to tune your hdd in linux to run faster or upgrade to a better spec

[hlds_linux] randomly crashing server

2004-12-27 Thread William Warren
I noted in an earlier thread i am having a randomly crashing hlds
cs 1.6 server. The thing is..there is not common map..i have
over 250 megs free with everything running. I have 800 megs free
hdd space for logs from the server(of which i had used maybe 20
of). Does hlds maybe not like the permission level 755? It has
to be endemic to hlds as the teamspeak server and the rest of the
system are rock solid. I am going to reformat it one more time
with a newly downloaded centos iso JIC but i do not think that
will fix it. I am leaning towards hlds needing permission 777?
any ideas would be highly appreciated

Re: [hlds_linux] Minimum server requirements for a Counter-Strike server

2004-12-13 Thread William Warren
I hosted a ten slot CS 1.6 server, a 20 slot TEamspeak server on
a p-2 350 w/256 megs of ram running CentOS 3.3 without too much
trouble. The larger maps would occasionally lag p the cs server.
I would say 500 is a realistic mimimum. Those machines as
dedicated servers will easily handle a 10-10 person Cs
server(depending on optional add-ons run).

Here at work they are migrating the old servers to new ones, and so it

They are all located in our colocation suite behind 100 Mbit bandwidth.
My boss gave me the green light to host gameservers on them, cause he's a

But I was wondering if the machines are strong enough to run
Counter-Strike on it, so I hope anyone can tell me more about the specs a

Thanks in advance,

ps. I was planning on running 1 CS server on each machine.

CentOS 3.3 is a rebuild from source rpm of RHEL 3 AS. This makes
it a 2.4.x kernel. RHEL 4 based on fedora 3 is in public beta.
Mike wrote:
I just installed CentOS 3.3 on a box. It appears to be a good operating

as the 2.6 kernel seems far superior (at least for gaming. And yes, I'm
talking even when both are set to hz 1000). Is this true, that the 2.6
kernel is unsupported?
I'm going to test it with the 2.4 kernel regardless, and compare it to a
fedora core 3 server. Ahh such fun :)
But as for my opinion in operating systems... my favorite is FreeBSD. By
far, whether it be 4.10 or 5.3. Although... I'm beginning to see much
difference resource statistics on 5.3 than I did in 5.2.1. (About 10-40%
higher cpu usage, much lower load, better fps - beats me).

If you do have 14000 machines why don't you buy Finjan's

It will filter all malicious I.E exploits for all its

Or just use SUS(system update server (microsoft)) just like
any other administrator... to install sp2 or to just replace
the c:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll with the patched one or

[hlds_linux] Hlds reinstall issue

2004-11-05 Thread William Warren
I had to reinstall my hlds recently due to changing linux
versions. What is did was simply copy the entire /usr/steam
directory and all sub directories to another partition. I then
changed from mandrake 9.2 to centos(RHEL 3 clone).
When the server starts up i get a username not setup or
previously set error. The server fails to update but then runs
without incident. How can i reestablish the account i had
already created?

Re: [Full-Disclosure] avoid jpeg overflow problems using on the fly conversion?

2004-09-17 Thread William Warren
The only problem is this..there is no reason to sanitize jpeg's
as this is not a jpeg issue but a Microsoft problem when dealing
with jpeg's. Things that do not depend on the dll are not
affected(mozilla/firefox and opera if i remember correctly). If
this was a jpeg issue then everything would be affected..also of
note is that win2k users are not affected(with the exception of
ie6).

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
while discussing the jpeg overflow problem and remembering the similar bmp
issue, one of my co-workers (thanks lars) brought up the idea of
sanitizing jpgs on the gateway level. google found me no hints for
existing stuff except a modified micro_proxy for converting png 2 jpg from
2001, when png support wasn't widely available. The project is at
http://freshmeat.net/projects/png2jpgproxy/ and is derived from
micro_proxy at http://www.acme.com/software/micro_proxy/
looking at the code - i admit not being a programmer - i found it quite
simple to modify the program to use it for the exact opposite. 3 lines of
code need to be changed:
from (strstr(line,image/png)))  png_translate=1;
to   (strstr(line,image/jpeg)))  png_translate=1;
---
from printf(Content-Type: %s\r\n,image/jpeg);
to   printf(Content-Type: %s\r\n,image/png);
---
from conv_stream=popen(/usr/X11R6/bin/convert png:- jpg:-,w);
to   conv_stream=popen(/usr/X11R6/bin/convert jpg:- png:-,w);
---
i'm not able to deliver a decent patch-file, but you'll get the idea. It
seems to work fine, no change in html-code just a new mime-type and the
gfx-format changes of course.
imho on the fly converting jpg to png should mitigate the risk of getting
malicious jpeg's. while blocking jpeg for external mail might have a low
impact, doing the same for http is not really an option. Installing
MS04-028 in a larger environment might not be that easy either. Of course
micro_proxy/png2jpg runs via (x)inetd and might not be performant enough
to handle huge loads.
I don't know of any content screening product which sanitizes graphics,
their good at removing active script, exes, plugins etc. Converting
graphics might not be the most elegant way, but using this method in a
flexible way should help to react fast on similar security issues. One
could convert gif, bmp, you name it depending on new security issues
arising. Of course ImageMagick (convert) had it's issues in the past, but
i rather deal with issues on the proxy than with the ones on the
client/IE.
The conversion approach might be suitable for sanitizing other file types
like ms office (doc, xls) etc.
just an idea...

Sascha

Re: [Full-Disclosure] MyDoom-M evades attachment filters

2004-07-28 Thread William Warren
what are you using for attachment filters? my astaro attachment
filter is killing mydoom without one getting through.

lsi wrote:
Since the first MyDoom (which appeared almost six months ago, to the
day) I have been nice and snug behind my executable attachment
filter. And my zipfile attachment filter. But then MyDoom-M slips
past

The reason is because it puts spaces or newlines into its MIME. Very
smart. Apparently the MIME decodes OK (spaces and newlines are
ignored by the MIME parser) but it sure makes it look different to my
filters.

I post this message so that folks can get working on regexp rules
that take spaces and newlines into account.

This MIME filter worked on almost all zipfiles until now:
UEsDBAoAA*
MyDoom-M however sends itself like this (two examples only):
U EsDBAoAA [rest of MIME here]
or
UEs
DBAo
AA [rest of MIME here]

Not one shy of a challenge, I'll admit this beat my filter. And I'll
also speculate that this will not pose a long-term problem. If
you're a regexp w1zard, feel free to share how you'd approach this!

My current thoughts are something like this:
U*E*s*D*B*A*o*A*A*
Still got newline prob though.

Are you certain this is a vuln in Firefox?
On W2K SP4 fully patched: I can verify that opening that page in

However, I get almost identical results opening the same page in IE

well known security researcher/expert not too long ago in the past

have you got any code or anything to substantiate this? Your site is
unreachable

Billy B. Bilano wrote:
Salutations, amigos!
Bill Bilano here, reporting in from the front-lines! I've got some
disturbing news that I've got to get some answers about while I share. I
think we're about to come under full hacker attack at any second! And to
those people that said us folks talking about crypto viruses were being
chicken littles... let me tell you, the sky just fell! And it is HEAVY!
I was sitting at my desk doing more research on the OPENBSD virus I
discovered last week. I was watching ethereal and monitoring the traffic
coming in and out of the facility and I saw a ton of traffic coming straight
for our web servers! The routers, firewalls, and intrusion detraction
systems were not sounding the red alarms like they should have been (we'll
get to THAT one later).
There appears to be a new virus in town and it's affecting Windows and UNIX
web servers! I have not identified a pattern of infection yet but the virus
is clearly advancing but it only affects web servers!
The virus works on port 443. It seems to accept inbound connections on that
port as well and, presumably, awaits for commands from some series of
servers elsewhere. Perhaps taking orders? I also captured some of the
traffic and attempted to analyze it up but it looks like -- you heard it
here first, folks -- the payload is encrypted! Is this the first of a coming
storm of crypto viruses we've all been eagerly fearing? (I have already sent
a copy of the payload to the distributed.net people so they can try to use
some of those wasting cycles to decipher it like they did the last one!)
I have taken the liberty of naming the virus already. I looked in
etc/services and saw that this port is for and it is something called ssl
so I am calling it w32.ssl.b (b for bilano, since I discovered this wretched
thing!)
I called in our webmaster and showed him the data. He is either too stupid
to know what's going on or he takes me for a fool. I got him in the
conference room and showed him the print outs. He tried to convince me it
was not a virus and just normal web traffic but web traffic is on port 80!
No fooling old Bill! LOL! So I told him to gather his stuff up and gave him
his marching orders. I have no time for this kind of bull, what with the
OPENBSD virus last week (still picking up the pieces there). He must have
known I was on to him because he was just laughing on his way out the front

I am responsible for security in a small business' network (50-or-so
machines, most of them running MS OSs). I have been aware of MSS bulletins
as soon as they where out, and made sure to apply patches as specified.
Sasser did nothing to my offices' network. But, on the other hand, I have
a
single PC at home, one I don't use very much, and I often forget to deal
with security patches on that machine. Well - would you bet? - I got a
Sasser infection at home, which caused me the discomfort of a late-night
session of cleaning, disinfeting, patching and do on. I put the blame on
me,
of course. But sure I could have spent that night doing something better,
chat-cheating the wife, reading a book, going to the movies and so on. So
my
question is: what wrong did al this do to The Microsoft BEAST? It only did
some wrong to me and my personal life. I could have avoided that, but
can't
I feel safe at home? Should I be satisfied at thinking that this guy is a
social naive whith no conscience of the consequences of his acts? Isn't
this what the law is meant for, to protect citizens and business from the
consequences of other people's acts?
Just another 0.02 worth comment in this thread, that is going stale IMO...

Re: [newbie] Gateway BURN IN HELL!! RANT Kind of long

2004-03-23 Thread William Warren
just from this post..it works with windows and not with Linux..Bioses
can be tied to windows and as part of the MS OEM license that is what
most large computer vendors do to get the rock bottom pricing on
windows. Gateway only supports windows and they do not and will not
support Linux on that machine. The warranty states no third party
software or hardware is not supported and will not be supported by
gateway. Dell and most other vendors have similar clauses in their
warranty agreements...they will not and do not have to replace anything
if it will run under windows. the court case will go nowhere if the
case is based on the machines inability to run Linux.

Marc wrote:
I had the same problem with a friend of mine who wanted to try Linux. I
also had a spare harddrive that had linux already on it. We took his

Couldn't get into the BIOS at all. We put his old disk in and it was
recongized just fine but had to reinstall windows. This is a 3 year old
gateway. He tried to install linux on the original harddrive and all
went well until reboot. Again we couldn't get into the bios. Now that
I know what the problem is I can reformat his drive with partition majic
and he can use the restore disk. Although it doesn't surprise me in the
least, gateway and gates, both suck.

Moureen I seem to be getting close to the bottom of this. From what I have
found it is NOT a problem with linux. I have spent a lot more time
troubleshooting than I really should have. If I was to put any reasonable
value on my time I could have purchased a couple of new motherboards by now.
I guess I just don't like to be beaten by a POS hardware problem or a low
life company that sells junk like this.
This is what I have found so far. I installed a old Seagate 8 geg HDD model
ST38410A in the Gateway, ML 10.0 installed , rebooted and ran just fine. I
then downloaded Powermax from Maxtor and did a low level format on the Maxtor
HDD from Gateway to insure that any and all hidden partitions and all data
that Gateway had on it was 100% removed. I then tried it again and got the
same old result. After installing ML the BIOS could no longer see the HDD.
I did another low level format and again installed the drive in the gateway
the BIOS could again detect the drive but this time I ran the diagnostic
utility on the powermax disk and got the result of a ERROR BIOS Extension
support failed.

After this I have to conclude that Gates way is selling some models of
computers where the BIOS on the MOBO does not fully or correctly support the
hard drives supplied with the computers.

At this moment the owner of the gateway machine is on the phone with gateway
demanding a replacement MOBO or a replacement drive of the same size that is
100% supported by his MOBO or a full refund. If he meets to much resistance
from gate way he is going to inform them that this matter will be taken to
small claims court and that the papers will be filed in Mountain Home
Arkansas the town that we live near. After doing some research into Arkansas
law if we understand it correctly a representative from gateway will have to
appear in court in Mountain Home AR or a automatic judgment will be made
against Gateway. The closest Gateway office is in Little Rock, over a 100
mile drive so someone from gateway will have to spend at least a full day at
this or they will have to hire a local lawyer. Yeah this guy is a bit Pod but
he has been hung up on by Gateway tech support no less than 3 times in the
last few days.

I by no means claim to understand the law but in my mind their is a valid
legal point here. Gateway is selling systems built with hardware that is NOT
supposed to be installed together.
This would be like Ford selling a car with rims that were 15 X 8 and
putting on tires that were recommended by the manufacturer to go on a rim no
smaller than 15 X 10 , I would assume that when the tires failed to
preform correctly ford would be forced to rectify the parts mismatch.

Also if the system that you are talking about Moureen is about 3 years old
Gateway could have a BIG problem here, possibly a class action law suit.
If they want to sell third rate hardware to customers that do not know any
better they deserve it.

Any legal prows out there with any opinions?

Marc

My views are based on the fact that the Maxtor diagnostic software says
that the hard drive suppled by Gateway is not properly supported by the BIOS
on the mother board suppled BY gateway. Upgrading a operating system is a
routine thing that most computer owners due themselves or hire a tech to due
at one time or another. After all we all know plenty of people who have
upgraded from win 95 to 98 or from win 98 to ME or XP. Upgrading is a
routine thing that almost everyone expects to be able to due when purchasing
a PC.
Once again using the auto analogy parallel parking is something that most
people would assume that any car they purchased would be able to due weather
or not the manufacturer stated in their warranty that the car was capable of
parallel parking or not. One would assume the manufacturer would be held
responsible if a car was unable to to due such a routine function even with a
skilled driver. One would also assume that if the problem with the car being
impossible to parallel park was caused by a mismatch of the tires and rims
that was not recommended by the maker of the tires. Would the auto maker not
be responsible for using components that were designed to work together to
preform basic routine functions? The BIOS in the gateway computer does NOT
properly support the hard drive that Gateway installed with it. The software
supplied by the maker of the HDD says so in so many words. Because of this
parts mismatch the computer is unable to preform a basic routine function, a
upgrade. If the HDD was able to preform as the manufacturer intended it to a
simple routine upgrade would not be a issue but this machine was supplied
with BIOS that is NOT able to control the hard drive properly so a routine
function like a upgrade may be impossible even to the next OS that windoze
comes out with. If this was a matter of the MOBO having a chipset that was
not supported by linux that would be one thing but this is much more basic.
One piece of gateway hardware doe's not properly support another piece of
Gateway hardware supplied in the same system by Gateway.

Furthermore win or loose the guy that owns the GW is retired and has
nothing better to do with his spare time. He feels that it is not to much to
ask gateway to supply BIOS that will work properly with the hard drive that
they supplied. If they would rather waste a amount of time and effort that
far exceeds the value of the computer and perhaps suffer from similar
customer dissatisfaction and PR in the future he feels that would be all
right also. The folks at gateway have already spent at least 4 hours of tech
support time debating this issue. That had to cost a few bucks. If they want
to continue to supply mismatched hardware let them also put up with the
consequences that go with it. For that matter let them at least hire tech
support people that the average English speaking public can understand. 2 of
their tech support people had such bad English you would need a translator to
understand more than half of what they said!!! I have doubts if they could
understand all of what we told them.

The whole situation with gateway failing to admit that they could have a
hardware mismatch is nothing short of ridiculous

   .

know about it or have analyzed it before? It is definitely NOT a text document. I
opened it up with WinHex and see the file yfivyjmg.exe in there towards the
beginning.
Looks to be a packed exe within, and first few bytes are:

I am reluctant to open the zip right now, as I fear it may be exploiting an overflow to
run the EXE file within. I may try to open it on a virtual machine later, but if you
guys do know anything about this one please let me know. It's nice and small too (12
KB)! Wonder if the guy wrote it himself. Of course, the IP address is spoofed to a
University of Chicago machine. Is it even possible to trace back? I still have the
full headers, but they looked nicely stripped to the gills. I have been receiving
elevated attacks via email over the last few days, so maybe it is some guy on this list
trying to get me ;-) One previous email stated that it was the FBI and to call a
number
listed in the email. This was most likely an attempt to get the number I was calling

opened it up with WinHex and see the file yfivyjmg.exe in there towards the

This was most likely an attempt to get the number I was calling
from. This guy thinks he's smooth...

Re: Warning - new trend of attempts to infect ISP users (possibly virus)

2004-03-03 Thread William Warren
it has gotten to the point for me that i am looking for a whitelisting
option on my firewall/a-v gateway instead of a blacklisting one for
attachments.

Erm is it me or are the writers of Bagle and Netsky determined to keep morphing

new trend in that it started only a decade ago?

Perhaps I'm only following this as its affecting us more, but I dont recall a
time previously when I've had so many viruses hitting us and getting thro our
scanners with nothing we can do about it. I dont recall seeing viruses with
variants as high as 'j' before, especially in the relatively short time since
the previous variants were out

Seriously, drop some references if I'm off-track.. its just my perception and

[newbie] webdav on mandrake 9.2

2004-02-29 Thread William Warren
I am trying to get webdav working on mandrake 9.2 I have mod dav
installed and the dav fs installed..apache is installed and running. I
have been trying for the past couple of months to get this working and
it is beyond me..:) the directory i want to share is
/files/server/calendar i am not worried about outside access as this is
internal to my lan and i have astaro security linux specifically set to
not allow this server on the net. This server also runs samba and
shares out an 80 gig drive(the one the calendar will be on)...how do i
get webdav working? the clients will be mozilla 1.x with the calendar
module add-on installed..:)

Re: [Full-Disclosure] Knocking Microsoft

2004-02-27 Thread William Warren

James P. Saveker wrote:

Some personal thoughts,

Yes indeed it's no secret that Microsoft valued functionality over security
for many years. I think that's how they are a market leader today. This
model could not be sustained however, as with the advent of exponential
internet growth security has undoubtedly become a major concern.
Microsoft has in there defence started the trustworthy computing scheme,
which many would not hesitate to laugh at. However windows server 2003 does
not by default load unnecessary services. Microsoft has developed bits
client to downloaded patches requiring minimal user interaction depending on
the configuration. In the enterprise they have improved SMS server to
deploy patches across bits. For smaller business they offer SUS for FREE.
The code they produce is far more stringently tested in regard to security
than perhaps it was before.
really? then are some ofhte flaws in win nt4 able to be exploit in 2k3?
NOt a very good code review in my eyes.
The key to increasing the windows security model is not just one thing,
however with the advent of granular code patches will be smaller and cheaper
to deploy requiring much less bandwidth than today. Longhorn will be a big
jump for Microsoft and a major test of the trustworthy computing yada yada.
I do not understand why people knock Microsoft so much in regard to security
today.
because it has been up to htis point marketing combined with FUD..which
unfortunatly many buy into.
I regularly hear people talking about how many vulnerability's
Microsoft has and how poor this is. As everybody subscribing to this list
and similar zone-h, bugtraq etc will know Linux has many warnings posted
also.
here we go..apples to oranges..you have to take thelinux kernel AND all
the 3rd party packages and combine them to approach MS's vulnerablility
numbers..nice try..:)
Yet I rarely hear people talking about that and indeed how it is far
more difficult to keep linux distro's up to date. Windows has a far greater
end user base than any other operating system. It would be a fair
assumption to then say that perhaps virus writers and hackers are going to
look for ways to exploit windows far more than other end user system in
order to gain greater penetration. That is not to say that people do not
look for sploits in web application servers running nix and other such
systems in respect to the amount of nix servers on the net.
considering that linux is the #1 webserver paltform..hackers nail it all
the time..though most tiems they are able to deface or own due to admin
misconfiguring rather than code that is filled with bugs and holes.
I don't mean to open an open sauce debate but merely say my bit and see
others peoples views on the topic.

Chips to ease Microsoft's big security nightmare
10:00 22 February 04

Chip makers are planning a new generation of microprocessors that should
plug the gaps that led Microsoft to issue a critical security alert last
week.

The alert was sparked by the discovery that a raft of Microsoft programs
were vulnerable to a problem called buffer overflow, which hackers can
exploit to extract private information from a PC. And the risk of such
attacks only worsened when, two days after the alert was issued, critical
Windows source code was leaked on to the internet letting hackers see how
it works.
A buffer is a section of computer memory that can store a set amount of
data. Sometimes, usually because of a software bug, the processor sends more
data to the buffer than it can hold, causing it to overflow into the next
chunk of buffer memory. This makes computers vulnerable to hackers, because
by deliberately making a buffer overflow they can force the computer to
execute their malicious code.
The problem is hard to detect, as popular programming languages, like C and
C++ do not make it easy to track when programs are vulnerable to overflow.
But now chip makers Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel are developing
processor chips that will deal with the problem.
AMD's Athlon-64 (for PCs) and Opteron (for servers) will protect against
buffer overflows when used with a new version of Windows XP. Intel plans
similar features on next generation Pentium chips.
