Oh wait... you're using TreeDraw correct? So you must be using the Long

Re: [LegacyUG] icons

2006-08-29 Thread Susie Zada

Hi Nancy,

As others have said - this is NOT an icon for the individual but an icon for
their spouse(s) and as the majority of couples are male and female there is
a male icon spouse for the female individual and a female icon spouse for
the male individual - absolutely 100% correct.

I don't believe anything has changed from previous versions it's just
someone actually looked at it in detail for the first time after downloading
the latest version and didn't realise it was the SPOUSE icon and NOT the
individual's icon.

As I said in another email, I have yet to find

optional add-ons or plug-ins.

I doubt that I or indeed the majority of users

I will never need the American counties

I probably will never use the Research

I also doubt that I will ever want to produce a

Re: [LegacyUG] free edition of Passenger Express

2006-08-29 Thread Lloyd A. Horrocks

Hi Cathy and others,

If you want to keep everything in your transfer to a new Legacy file, use
the direct transfer. Do not go through the gedcom and import, just export
to a new Legacy file, then delete the Private material. I just did that
with a descendant narrative report for the upcoming family reunion.
Alternative, export the tagged persons to a new Legacy file directly.

Hi Jane,

You can also include your Family File.

However you need to be aware that it includes the whole file. I mean the
whole file - not just the people tagged. I mean the Whole File - there is
no way of removing Private information or Research Notes, Living Details
etc. It simply copies the File as is.

Some people will find this a useful feature provided they make a new
Family File with only the elements they are happy to share. You need to
use Gedcom export to do this and then import into a new Legacy File.

Be careful

Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Relationships Calculator

2006-08-29 Thread Jack Earnshaw

works perfectly fine with me on .108 and
.110, using either method i.e above the person's name and if I change the
display as you said.

As others have suggested, go to your
"starting person" and set the relationships again (you could maybe try Clear
relationships first). Else it might be one of those pesky ".usr" files that is
corrupt.

I just went back and read the thread on the issue of 1/2 relationships
not showing up since the last build.(I have build 6.0.0.110)Well I
have everyone's relationship coded in my database so I know all the 1/2
relationships that should be showing up. And every single 1/2
relationship is now not being calculated. All other relationships are
  showing but not the 1/2's.

I'm not sure of the setting but I'mNOT talking about showing 1/2
children in the family view. I have the relationship showing above each
parents name in the family view. Can't figure out what setting that is.
But I can change the setting in Customize Display to Relationship right on the
left side of say the father by right clicking so it goes born, chr, died,
buried, relshp. Now that relationship calculator isn't identifying 1/2
either. So there is something wrong with the whole relationship
  calculator since this last build.

Please fix this issue ASAP. I really rely on the relationship
calculator its part of my whole coding system.

Hi Angela,

In this Print dialogue, you can choose to save as a .csv file.

This can be opened in Excel or in Word. If you use Word, you then
need to convert text to table.

Then Sort on the Relationships column.
Gets close to what you want.

Cheers,

What I would like to do is have this report sort on the relationship

I.E. great-grandparent, 2nd great grandparent (or the other way 10th

Is this possible to do in Legacy?

DNA research: was Re: [LegacyUG] The Americanisation of Legacy?

2006-08-29 Thread steven perkins

Dave:

I run 10 DNA studies with over 250 participants. We need the DNA
part. If you are not going to use it, don't, but I certainly will.
Nearly 70,000 people have been tested by one commercial company.
Sorenson Molecular Genetics Foundation is testing another 100,000
people and the National Geographic Society is working on a similar
project. England has just announced the goal of testing one
half-million people for medical purposes. I believe you will find DNA
testing for genealogy will grow to be important in your future
genealogy research.

I am very interested in your and others comments on the perception of
DNA as intrusive. I can only see that if you are following a policy
of never acknowledging adoptions within your family. Even without DNA
testing, we are always faced with a question of discretion in the
handling of non-parental events. What makes DNA so much more
intrusive than our other genealogical research that you would not
consider using it?

Thanks for reading.

Mary,

Legacy will show you all photos in a SINGLE folder once one photo has been
found in that folder. This is one reason I keep my sub folders to a
minimum. I have about 12 folders at most.

One other thing I do: I have pointers identical to the ones to E:\... to
F:\... G:\... since I don't know what drive letter my drive will be
assigned on other computers.

Look at View/Master Lists/Location
select any location and click EDIT
you will see a Location field and underneath it is a Short Location
field.
The Short Location is identical to the Location unless YOU change it. On
screens and reports you can choose to use the Short Location. You may want
to do this since it is easier to read.

Example:
Mount Pleasant, Cabarrus County, North Carolina, USA
vs
Mt Pleasant, NC

RE: DNA research: was Re: [LegacyUG] The Americanisation of Legacy?

2006-08-29 Thread Eric W. Galloway
I think almost all genealogical information could be construed to be
intrusive.

Birthdates, why is that any of your business?
Marriage date and place, very personal for some and what if we did not
actually choose to get married? I would prefer not to tell you if I was
married before and to whom.
Half-sisters/brothers, we prefer to let them all think the father/mother
who raised them is their birth parent.
My genealogy is chocked full of too-intrusive and too-personal data. If
it should not be known or cannot be known, you leave it out that fact or
don't share it. Its just the nature of the whole pastime, I think...

RE: [LegacyUG] Long names short names

2006-08-29 Thread Robert Carneal
Sure. An example of a long name might be
Harkness Crossroads, Blount County, Alabama, USA

However that is too long for some screen display. So, there is a short form
of that which could be:
Harkness Crossroads, Blount, Ala.

The short form will fit more screens in Legacy. You have to turn on Use
short form however. To do that, go to:
Options View tab and check Short Location Names on Screens which is
on the left side.

RE: DNA research: was Re: [LegacyUG] The Americanisation of Legacy?

2006-08-29 Thread ronald ferguson
Firstly, Dave, there is no suggestion that it should not be available, only
that it need not be in the basic download but issued as a plug-in or
similar.

Adopted members of my family are, as somebody else said, treated as full
family members. I do, however, record them but do not generally publish the
information.

DNAs can be intrusive in that, what if they show that a relation was born
the wrong side of the blanket without the husband knowing. If there were
only two children which is the husband's child and how do you know which if
he is deceased and has no living relatives and what if an estate was
involved? We already have court cases over here regarding titles and whether
or not a child is the ligimate heir.

I can see the time coming that with widespread DNA testing every immigration
authority, police, banks, government and uncle Tom Cobbley an' all will want
DNA proof before allowing one to breath. No thank you.

Everyone is, of course, free to follow their interest in whatever way they
wish and no-one is proposing to stop that but why should the rest of us be
inflicted with memory using programs when there may be another way of
keeping everybody happy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem Searching IGI

2006-08-29 Thread ronald ferguson
Jerry, You do not say how you tried to access the IGI site so I have tried
various ways. In Legcay I set my default browser to Netscape 7.2 and did a
search using SearchSearch IGI and then viewed the image. No problems. I
also went to Family Search (English) and then their IGI page again no
problems. This does not mean that there is not an error for other countries
though.

With Netscape the show/hide script errors for web sites is, I believe, set
to hide by default and I have not found a way to change this...

So in a nutshell I cannot see how you are getting this message. If I have
not covered the way you are getting to the site please let me know (with the
URLs please) and I will try again to reproduce your effect.

While searching for an answer I did happen to notice that Netscape now have
an 8.1 version and I will be downloading this shortly - maybe it will
provide an answer to your problem as well.

Steve,

Looking back through messages I have sent on this subject, I at no time have
I said that DNA testing is intrusive.
I believe that it is probably an important tool in genealogy but I would
like the choice of whether the program I am using needs to have it included.
If and when I decide to go down the DNA path it would be appealing to be
able to go to the Legacy site and d/l a plug-in to enhance the program.

Add-ons or Plug-ins are the way to go with this type of feature.
These little used features hog resources.

Steve,

Looking back through messages I have sent on this subject, I at no time
have I said that DNA testing is intrusive.
I believe that it is probably an important tool in genealogy but I would
like the choice of whether the program I am using needs to have it
included.
If and when I decide to go down the DNA path it would be appealing to be
able to go to the Legacy site and d/l a plug-in to enhance the program.

Add-ons or Plug-ins are the way to go with this type of feature.
These little used features hog resources.

Re: [LegacyUG] free edition of Passenger Express

Hi Lloyd,

I said go via Gedcom as with direct Legacy transfer you can only
remove Private material.

You can't remove Research Notes, To Dos, only include Sources marked
for printing, suppress details for living people etc without going
the Gedcom route.

It would be great if we could have more options with a direct Legacy
transfer but currently we haven't that option.

Hope that clarifies

Some people will find this a useful feature provided they make a

need to use Gedcom export to do this and then import into a new Legacy File.

Re: [LegacyUG] free edition of Passenger Express

2006-08-29 Thread Mark Woodward

Geoff,

There is something else that needs to be implemented. That is to give
the user the option of where to install PE. I tried it out yesterday
and it installed automatically on my C drive, which is too small (I
have added another much larger drive on which I load programs and keep
data). So today I tried to run another program and found I had
problems because my C drive was almost out of space. Consequently I
have uninstalled it. This is a shame because it seems to be an
interesting program. Then, to make matters worse I found that the
uninstall left behind a huge amount of data (I had made the mistake of
reading my entire Legacy file into PE). Fortunately I know enough to
delete it myself. But my conclusion is that this is shoddy
programming - I can't tell it where to install and it doesn't
uninstall cleanly. If these get fixed (and you implement the ability
to specify what to load - I found it loaded all my scanned documents
when I only wanted pictures of people and gravestones), then I'll try
again. Meanwhile I'm staying clear of this. Sorry to complain but
perhaps this will contribute to a better job the next time around.
Cheers,

Mark

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem Searching IGI

Ron,
I did the search the same as you - SearchSearch IGI website - and that
pesky box pops up every time. I'm in the US. I have not loaded the Geo
Database into Legacy, but the pop-up for that indicates that the search
can take place without it.

Thanks

Jerry, You do not say how you tried to access the IGI site so I have
tried various ways. In Legcay I set my default browser to Netscape 7.2
and did a search using SearchSearch IGI and then viewed the image. No
problems. I also went to Family Search (English) and then their IGI page
again no problems. This does not mean that there is not an error for
other countries though.

With Netscape the show/hide script errors for web sites is, I believe,
set to hide by default and I have not found a way to change this...

So in a nutshell I cannot see how you are getting this message. If I
have not covered the way you are getting to the site please let me know
(with the URLs please) and I will try again to reproduce your effect.

While searching for an answer I did happen to notice that Netscape now
have an 8.1 version and I will be downloading this shortly - maybe it
will provide an answer to your problem as well.
