The Escort was a great economy car, but if it ever overheated enough to pin the
gauge, you were
looking at a new engine. Aluminum cylinder block warped. The dealer advised me
it would be cheaper
to replace the engine than to try to repair it.

Plus that Escort had a plastic radiator that could "leak" bits into the new
engine to block coolant
flow, causing the new engine to fail as well.

YMMV, but that's how *my* Escort wagon died.

I've peeved in passing about my recent car problems. In particular, the mystery
water loss on my
Subaru. I finally gave up and ordered the $300 worth of parts to do the
headgasket replacement that
I tried to save money on when I put the motor in the car.

Monday night I had the heads off, found evidence of blowby into the cooling
jacket which explained
both the water loss and the lack of other typical blown headgasket symptoms. I
was all set to put
the new headgasket in yesterday morning when someone commented that I really
ought to take the heads
into the machine shop to be checked out.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157672026815098

Yesterday morning, I toss the heads in my van, fill the gas tank and the van
won't start.
Eventually I buy about $).25 worth of gas, pour a tiny bit down the throttle
body, the van starts
up, runs fine and I head into Santa Cruz. I get about another two miles further
on, and the van
breaks down for real.

This morning I realize that the registration and smog are due on the van. I
paid the registration
online to avoid late fees, kind of hard to smog a vehicle that won't start.

The problem with the van is probably the fuel pump. $200 for the part, in the
gas tank. The full 35
gallon fuel tank that has to be removed to get to the fuel pump. I could pay my
mechanic to do the
job, but that's another $200 that I don't have, particularly since I can't get
to work without a
running vehicle.

The heads are back on the Subie, though not torqued down. If nothing else goes
wrong, it should be
running tomorrow afternoon sometime. I won't bore you with the story of the
dumb ass mistake I made
yesterday that cost me something like four hours. On the bright side, I'm now
pretty damned good at
assembling Subaru cylinder heads.

I understand that things come up, and we each face a series of crisis in our
lives. I'd greatly
appreciate it, however, if the Universe let me finish with on crisis before it
throws the next one
at me.

In other news, it seems that Mom has flipped her shit and now thinks that
Debbi, the friend who is
taking care of her and pretty much giving her a place to live so she doesn't
have to be in a home,
is trying to kill her.

RE: PESO - Green and Gate

2018-07-16 Thread John Coyle
I love 'em too! Went to Farnborough and Biggin Hill a couple of times each
when I lived in the UK. Nothing like the sound of a Merlin engine at full
throttle in a WWII aircraft, or a Vulcan or Victor on full thrust on take-off.

Here in Queensland, there is a "Warbirds" museum with some well-restored
aircraft from many decades: when I visited, I was amazed to find one of their
Hawker Hunters was built when I was working at the Hawker factory in
Kingston-upon-Thames, so it is very possible I plated the cockpit release
catches! Glad to know it had no accidents as a result...

I love air shows!

I participated in a couple during my active duty days. One resulted in a few
moments of terror when one of our planes didn't make it for the fly-by, but was
involve in a mid-air that resulted in the loss of a radome and a navigation
ejecting (safely except for some broken toes) over the pine forests of NC. The
best one was wen my son was a teen-ager and we attended the one at Miramar, CA
back when it was the "Top Gun" Navy Base. (It is now the USMC's main airbase
on the West Coast). I had lots of high performance a/c, plus two Migs; first
ones I ever saw other than I on radar screen.

We have a nice annual airshow 2 hours west of here in Reading, PA, that
specializes in WW II aircraft. An organization to which I belong mans a table
there to promote our group and educate folks on aviation heroes.

I used to like to post myself at the end of runways and watch the planes
overhead heading for a touchdown. These days one can get arrested doing that. 

I have no idea why you have had problems with Outlook under W7 (and later

Can't speak for anyone else, but AFAIK Outlook is only available as part of
Micro$oft Office; the
latest version of which doesn't work with Windoze7.
Down-level versions that do work with Windoze7 are not available and are not
supported.

After the hell I went through with Windoze10, I'm not inclined to pay Micro$oft
for software that I
have to learn all over again, especially when experience tells me that even if
I could get it to
work, it won't let me do things the way I want to do them.

I've been using the mail client from Netscape and its descendants (aka
Thunderbird) since 1994. Thunderbird works just fine.

The problems are all with the email providers, not with the software I use to
send & receive email.

Right now, Yahoo is the least problematic email provider I can use with PDML. I
would use it
exclusively if I could figure how out to get it to echo my own submissions to
the list back to my
Yahoo inbox so messages would thread properly.

And *NOT* Gmail either.

Am I missing something? I can never understand the reluctance to use
Microsoft's mail systems: I've
been using Outlook for more years than I care to remember, and seldom have any
problems. When away,
I have used Live Mail, and while not as good as Outlook, it works!
On Outlook, I have set up rules to move emails from the PDML to their own
folder, and have other
rules for client emails - all of which have worked for years without issue.
My wife, however, uses an iPad, and the mail system on those is primitive by
comparison, and last
month reloaded emails from 3 years ago!

RE: D-FA HD 15-20mm f2.8

I borrowed Larry's 15-30 for a couple of shots while we were in California in
November 2016 - I
confirm Mark's comments on exposure between areas of different brightness and
boy, that barrel
distortion! That was on a K5ii, maybe not so bad on the K1. Interesting lens,
however, and very
sharp.

Of the music choices , John Coyle's does it for me.. I don't have to play the

- butit would have been a draw on the music if John Sessions had used the most
appropriate MOON
DANCE by Van Morrison for his Dancing moon  - I saw this post before I looked

I have the Super-Takumar 135/3.5 and do use it occasionally on digital. I

I had a K-mount 135/3.5 mf lens and it was quite good, but slower than I wanted
so I found a 135/2.5 which I don’t think was quite as nice, but does a lot
better in really low light.

RE: PDML Annual book - request for next year

2018-02-28 Thread John Coyle
There must be something I don't get: I started with DOS, worked with every
iteration of Windows
from 3.1 to 10 (except 8), and never had serious issues. I'm still running a
copy of Lotus 1-2-3
from 1995, and it's working just as it always did.
The upgrade from W7 to W10 took a little time but never faltered, and now it's
generally stable.
The only annoyance I have is, very occasionally, it will start an update while
I'm working, and in
doing so can stop some services, but it's easily overcome by a warm boot -
which doesn't seem to
cruel the update!

The advantage for me was Windows has always been mostly hardware agnostic. I
could buy parts, plug
'em together; boot up the install disk and get a working, usable system ... up
until Windoze 10.

When I wanted to actually do some work, the applications I needed to use would
function. Sometimes
it was aggravating. It took trial and error to get it going, but eventually it
*DID* get going.
Often it was FUGLY, but it worked.

That's why I'm so hostile towards Windoze 10. It didn't work. After all the
nagging and aggravation
they put me through, it wouldn't work.

For now I'm sticking with Windoze7, at least until Micro$oft murders it.

But, yes, most likely Ubuntu when my paranoia level at the lack of security
updates after Jan 2020.

I am pretty much removing ALL of the pre-installed "software" to make room for
the programs *I* use.
The trial versions of Word Perfect and Quatro Pro are going bye-bye; so is
"BullGuard".

Open Office, here I come.

Antivirus software? How does Windoze Defender compare to aftermarket products?

None of the reviews (PC Magazine, PC World, TopTen) even list it. But I'm not
sure how much faith I
can put in them, because some of them rate Norton highest (and the others
recommend it highly).

My previous experience with Norton is why I'm using AVG currently.
Recently AVG has begun exhibiting the same behavior that pissed me off against
Norton.

Definitely not going with Kaspersky. Maybe Bitdefender or Avast?

Or is Windoze Defender good enough?

On most on-line forms, under Windows 10, and prior to that under at least 7 if
not XP, previously
submitted information is available if you type the first letter of the

More than that, I notice that on at least one line banking system, when making

Perhaps that is an advantage of using Windows, despite the naysayers in this

Lunar eclipses happen a couple times a year, and are visible from about half
the planet. Are you

Mark, for you, with the sunrise at 6:59am, it was probably bad.
But in Detroit, which is considerably west from you, the sunrise was at 7:47am.
So, I'd say the partial eclipse (in "umbra") was probably still visible for
Ken. (Ken, how was it?)

In our neck of the woods, we had a very tight schedule:
   Moon's
 Azimuth Altitude
  h moo
Moon enters umbra 2018 Jan 31 05:48.1 279.5 17.5
Moon enters totality 2018 Jan 31 06:51.4 286.5 4.8
Moonset2018 Jan 31 07:19 289.8
Sunrise: 7:17am

The totality was starting when the moon was rather low, and would be
obscured by the houses nearby.
So, last night I thought of the observation point that is on the
"hill" (it is very flat here, so, it is hard to find a real hill),
and on the eastern side of the major highway (which doesn't go "high" in
this area).
So, there was a clear view to the moon as the totality was starting.

The timing was perfect: we didn't have to wake up to early, just 10
minutes earlier than usually. We left from our house some 15 minutes prior
to the time we usually leave for the school bus. We saw the onset of the
totality, and then drove to the school.

It was a very good timing for us. The sky was a bit bright because of the
approaching sunrise, but overall, everything reasonably visible.
No need for early rising and no school classes missed.

Cheers,

Igor

RE: 4k tv, monitor, watching movies, displaying photos

2018-01-24 Thread John Coyle
Larry, Jan and I recently bought an LG 49-inch LCD (UHD) Smart TV, and it is
excellent for
displaying photos: I use an intermediate box which plays DVD's, reads memory
cards, and into which I
can plug my K5ii so that the images can be displayed direct to the TV.
If you get that brand in the USA, I can highly recommend it: cost was A$1195,
so about US$600. Of
course, taxes etc. may make it more or less expensive in your state.
And, yes, the oversaturated look is deliberate in so many areas these days,
including travel
advertising, but you can overcome it. My TV is set for a "Natural" saturation,
just like the K5ii.

Larry,

Just to address the oversaturated look at the stores:
It's a fad of the past NN years. So, I believe, the demo is designed to run in
the "high-saturation"
mode, whatever it might be called with the particular brand/model.
There are typical presets that are "sports, movies, entertainment, ..."
You might be able to use a remote and try to switch to a different mode that
would be more
realistic.

Tomshardware.com used to be a reasonable source for reviews on such devices.
I don't know how bad
they became in the recent past:
https://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-tvs,review-2224.html

I haven't been following the TV technology closely in the past few years,
although it is quite
possible that we might have to buy a new TV in the near future (as our 10-y.o.
TV might be dying).
So, please share back to the list if you find some other useful resources.

One thing I have in mind is that all the technologies-du-jour (Roku, Air-Play,
...) tend to be
becoming mostly obsolete quicker than the TV itself. So, it seems to me that it
might be a more
flexible solution to buy these "smart" technologies as a separate box, as
opposed to the one
built-in.

While I was watching the trends, Samsung was the best (LCD panels).
I wouldn't buy a plasma TV (if they still sell those).
I think OLED and QLED would be more expensive than LED, but they are also MUCH
more expensive.
So, LED or LCD would be the best bet on a budget.

Cheers,
Igor

buying a TV. I don't watch much TV and all of mine have been hand me
downs. I almost bought one about 15 years ago, but then my dad passed away
and I inherited his.

My ideal would be to get a 4K (UHD) in the 30-40 inch range that would
work well for displaying my photos when it's not being used for movies and
TV. Since I'm at least within radio hailing distance of the real world,
cost is a serious consideration. I've seen 4K TVs for around $300, but the
images on them at the store are always over saturated, and pretty bad
looking, but that might be due to source material that they try to make
"pop".

The other option would be to get something cheap until I could afford
something better a ways down the line. What sort of technology should I
look for and what would I need to pay to get it?

Subject: Multiple takes of group photos (thinking out loud)

Occasionally I am asked to take a group photo.
Every time I am choosing the best (or even usable) photo from the set, I am
struggling with finding
one. The reason is that at any given moment someone takes less then the best
pose, facial
expression, ...
So, you end up with one photo where it's better for one person, and another one
for another
person...

So, I've been thinking about some empirical formula for the number of photos I
need to take to
ensure I could choose one where everybody is OK.
When I have 1 person, the first photo will be bad, so, I need to take an extra
(or two). So, for 1
person: 1+1 (or 1+2) photos.
For 2 people I will have about two bad ones (one for each), so, 2+1 (or
2+2).
...

One might think that for N people, I'd need N+1 (or N+2)...
But that's wrong, because in addition to everybody having individual bad
moments, I will have a
combination of bad poses in more then one person, plus, people getting
distracted when the crowd
grows close to 10 and above.
The deduction and combinatorics does not seem to work well here, but I suspect
that statistically,
I'd need N^2+1 or even N!+1 (where
N!=1*2*3*...*N) to optimize the probability of finding one photo where
everybody looks fine.

Ghm...

Igor

noticed. All right,
Larry did.

But it's up for your enjoyment/edification/horror now. Some good stuff, as
always, from the usual
ne'er-do-wells - as well as some interesting variations. My favorites came
courtesy of Jack Davis'
email client, which inserted random line breaks throughout many of his posts.
Or possibly not
random: Many of them created such wonderful free-verse poetry I suspect machine
intelligence may be
at work and expressing itself artistically through the medium of Jack Davis
email missives. I was
tempted to fill this year's Quotations List with dozens of them. But I held off
because I want to
compile them all...
and submit them to a publisher under my own name. (I have to get some benefit
from this project
eventually, don't I?)

Anyway, here it is: http://www.robertstech.com/quote.htm

RE: More thoughts on slide scanning: Hamrick VueScan

2017-10-25 Thread John Coyle
I've had Vuescan since 1996, and gave up using it when the interface became
less intuitive to use,
and my old film scanner was no longer supported (SCSI connection, which it
seems no-one uses
nowadays and there are no PCI cards available for Windows 7+). The Epson
software I found
reasonable to use, but if the Vuescan interface is now better I'll go back to
it!

Subject: More thoughts on slide scanning: Hamrick VueScan

So... I've been scanning in some old slides lately. My current 35mm film
scanner is an old Minolta
Scan Dual IV. Which unfortunately isn't supported by Konica/Minolta on any
modern operating system.

The traditional solution to this is to use Hamrick's "VueScan"
software, because it has built-in support for most scanners: No need for a
driver from the
manufacturer. I tried VueScan years ago but struggled with the interface and
gave up on it. So I'm
pleased to report that the latest version has a vastly improved UI from what I
remember. Image
quality is excellent: The multi scan capability is easy to use and really lets
you get the best dMax
from a scanner. I'm very impressed.

Now here's something interesting: VueScan comes in two versions, Basic and Pro.
"Basic" supports
only flatbed scanners, not film scanners, and has some other limitations but
it's only $39.00. The
"Pro" version costs $99.00 but supports film scanners. Unfortunately, I
accidentally purchased the
Basic version - though strangely they only charged me
$29.00 rather than $39.00 listed on the web site. I was still annoyed with
myself... until I noticed
that one can upgrade for just $50.00.
So that's what I did, just moments later. I ended up getting the full pro
version, legally, for
$79.99 instead of $99.00! Seems like an odd loophole but I'm not complaining!

And another bonus: Way back in the jusk closet in my office I had an old
Visioneer flatbed scanner
which I abandoned when the manufacturer decided not to update their drivers to
support Windows 7. (
I think I tried to give away this scanner on the PDML and had no takers.) So I
bought an Epson
flatbed and forgot about it. But guess what? VueScan supports it. So I took it
in to school and now
I have my own flatbed scanner there.

So basically, I also got a free scanner out of the deal.

RE: An new variation on the "silicon film" idea

2017-10-18 Thread John Coyle
Larry's suggestion is what I do already, to a large extent. On my digital
bodies, until I bought
two lenses designed for digital, I used film era lenses with no problem - even
screw-mount examples!
Now, I regularly use a film era 28-105 on digital - it makes a good walkabout
lens when I don't need
a wide angle, but do want moderate telephoto.

That's a clever idea, but there are two problems, first it's not very clever,
and second, as I often
either point out or demonstrate, there can be a huge disparity between clever
ideas and good ideas.

IMNSHO there are really two appropriate solutions to the problem. Either shoot
film while you can
still get it processed, and then if you want get it scanned, or buy a digital
body that lets you use
your legacy glass. The options for this seem to be (as appropriate to your
gear):
High end Nikon that will meter off AIS, Pentax, Leica, or some EVIL body that
allows you to get an
adapter to use the lenses you want to play with.

We were able to visit Portsmouth on our UK trip. Without trying to bore anyone,
here are some shots.
HMS Warrior is an Ironclad warship of the 19th century with supplementary steam
power. She never
fired a shot in anger but, such was her power, she was the perfect deterrent
for over 30 years. You
all know HMS Victory which remains the Flagship of the Royal Navy with Captain
& Crew. The
restoration of her rigging will only be completed in 2025. Note that Nelson's
bunk is between two
cannons. In fact the whole crew lived among the cannons. Warrior & Victory both
had over 100 guns on
several levels & could deliver devastating broadsides. The Mary Rose
exhibition, only recently
opened, is quite amazing. HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy's latest Aircraft
Carrier, was in
dock. The Emirates Spinnaker Tower is impressive but we didn't get a chance to
go up there, nor
visit the Submarine base on the other side of the harbour. If you contemplate a
visit, you will need
a couple of days to do it justice.

RE: PESO x 2: RAF (WWII) Wings?

2017-10-11 Thread John Coyle
I think they were actually from a De Havilland Venom - the wing profile is
slightly different on the
two aircraft, with the Vampire having a less 'swept back' look than the Venom.
Both aircraft were
in use by the Fleet Air Arm when I was a boy, and often seen on the south coast
of England, where I
then lived. The venom was a development of the Vampire, and shared many common
parts.

Very nice gallery! You have well captured the feeling of SF and the area, and
seem to have included
every major sight (except Coit and Transamerica towers, which are quit overdone
elsewhere).

I have been there 9 or 10 times, and don't have as many evocative images of the
city as you do.

I'm semi-de lurking for the latest news for those of you who care :-) a couple
of weeks ago the
plumbing in my bathroom died to the extent that the bathtub would not drain...
this took a couple of
days of being invaded by the buildings plumbers and it finally got fixed .
Happily, I wsa able to
bathe at a neighbor's but it was quite an adventure.
Then I thought I had more money than I do -- discovering I had made a
$100 mistake in my checking account
after having, in a way, spent some of it...
Next I took a tumble on the subway stairs (fortunately, the second step from
the bottom inside the
station) and while I didn't break anything and there was a plethoria of
millenials surrounding me to
help, (new entry for Exaultaion of larks?) I got bruised and hurt my leg to the
extent that I'm
using a cane and an ace bandage today ... nothing broke.
This was all after I took Ashley to the vet - and the good news there is she is
in fine shape for an
12 year old but it was costly to find that out.

Then then ... well, read below - I posted this to Facebook but most of you
are not there .

"Still in shock from learning yesterday that cafe press (which has about
twenty of my wall calendars for sale) is removing wall calendars from
the list of products they offer. bad enough they have taken "wall
calendar" off the list of products designers for them can select to work
on, but they are gradually removing the CURRENT wall calendars from our
shops and the market place. Adding insult to injury, there was no
warning of this in the form of an alert or announcement - I stumbled on
it when I was going to tweak the wording on the landing page of my shop
https://www.cafepress.com/annsanstuff

The nice thing about having my calendars on cafepress for the past ten
years is that the template is renewed for each new year so someone who
might want to buy an older calendar can do it. The calendar grid is well
designed, straightforward and very user friendly for those who really do
use them (as I do) for keeping track of to do's and did do's in a medium
which is permanent and not subject to viruses, crashes, accidental
deletions. Anyone I told about this so far has simply gasped and in
audio caps said "WHY" . So, for one thing, if anyone want's to grab
any of these before they are dead it would be appreciated, but it might
be even more helpful, in terms of getting them to drop this bad idea, if
you simply bitched to them about it, or tried to order one of the wall
calendars that have already been suddenly made unavailable.

If you clicked on the /Twelve National Parks, Bouquet or New York
Details/, those are already gone as wall calendars. If any of you (I
know some of you are on cafe press too) have wall calendars up do give
them your input. Please share with anyone you know who has any calendars
by anyone that were produced by cafe press , or would want wall
calendars in the future from anyone and might help to encourage them to
reinstate the wall calendar format . Thanks guys, for reading, this
really shook me up. "

bay photo makes calendars but they cost too much, Lulu is reasonable but
they are not for
people who actually write on them - as you know if you got the PDML
calendars that look pretty
but have no real boxes for each day... anyone got any ideas? My self
production was a disaster,
too much work, printer problems, virtually little profit.

sigh,

RE: GESO - Coyles in the USA - Heading West

2017-08-06 Thread John Coyle
Thanks Rick and Ann.
I might get around to working out the approximate locations, if only for my own
benefit!
Larry's idea is the way I would go, but bear in mind I may have left the camera
on Australian time -
can't remember right now, but I will check. So the only reliable method is
pinpointing a known
time, such as the stop at Raton, and work backwards and forwards from there.
We were pretty much on
schedule the whole time, I think.

You could look at the times, interpolate between the stops and get a rough idea
as to location. If
it's 200 miles between stops, four hours on the schedule, and the photo was
taken about an hour
after leaving the station, then the photo was likely taken about 50 miles along
the path.

1960 Cadillac Coupe DeVille would be my guess.

They changed the parking lights mounted in the bumper to a single unit each
side in 1961 and made
some changes to the grill.

The tail-fins aren't big & flashy enough to be a 59.

Living Large

2017-07-30 Thread John Coyle
Seems a long time since I posted a PESO, so here goes:

http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~jcoyle/PESO16.html

Comments welcome (I know, there is a little motion blur as the car was pulling
away as I took the
shot)

Can anyone identify the car? Could not see if there was a name on the trunk as
the traffic blocked
my view.
This is just one of a number of big American cars in OZ - at one time they were
very popular for the
long distances involved travelling in some parts.
"Living Large" is what I interpret the number plate to stand for.

My CVT will give adequate engine braking to hold it on the limit at speeds

While I did drive a few newer CVT equipped vehicles I didn't drive them

engine compression braking with them going downhill.

My 1.4 litre Honda City can accelerate to 60kmh in a couple of seconds, and
drives smoothly to 100 (our normal highway limit) without hesitation, so
while I was not convinced about CVT's at first, I'm happy enough with it.
The one thing I don't much like is the noise it makes - very much as if the
engine is over-revving on acceleration!
Ideally, I'd like more control over gear changes/holding, but then I'd have
to go manual, which I don't want to do, given nearly all my driving is
city-based.

What's nice is that once it starts accelerating it doesn't stop. Just smooth
acceleration until you take your foot off the pedal.

lens that I am tempted to replace is the FA 20-35 f4, but I can't get a good

dud. It's clearly better (marginally) on film than on the K1 in terms of
edge and corner sharpness. It also seems to be better at the long end than
at 20mm. I recently fine-tuned the AF - and it needed about 5 steps of
correction IIRC - so I'm hoping that helps. But I seldom shoot wider than
28mm so I don't feel too motivated to upgrade to the DFA 15-30.

oh what fun - glad I jumped on this evening.. wasn't planning to until
Monday... small world time -
This post is mainly for Rick and Dan...

RIck - nice little set... Papermoon selfie studio is somewhat Barf
producing (not the image, jsut the concept) You got the character of the
place neatly in just 4 shots..

I first was there in 1971( OR 72?) on a geology field trip from
Hunter... just had time for a couple of grabs back then - the town was a rest
stop between geologic
sites we were exploring. We detoured to PA from the Catskills because of
snow... it was a trip over
easter vacation...

In 2007 an acquaintance of mine from the Scrabble club , Ed Moran, hired me to
photograph a showing
of a film on the poet Hyam Plutzik - Ed had done the interviews of more famous
poets than Plutzik
was for the film. He had a house in Jim Thorpe .. living there was artist
Shozo Nagano and part of
the house was a studio... Ed lives in the city and only went to Jim Thorpe
occasionally..

The event was at the Anita Shapolsky gallery - which is a converted church... I
expect the gallery
is still there and thriving.. it is beautiful - I spent the weekend there - the
showing was on
Saturday afternoon, so I had Saturday morning and Sunday morning and part of
Saturday late
afternoon to wander and shoot.

This is my stuff from that lovely and (somewhat profitable) weekend that I got
when I wasn't doing
the showing.
This is all OT cause I shot everything with the darkside camera I had then.

and if you are a glutton for punishment or just curious - this was the
assignment

https://annsan.smugmug.com/Assignments/At-the-showing-of-the-Hyam/

The film was interesting, and the interview with Stanly Kunitz was , according
to Ed, likely the
last one he gave as he died not long after.

I went back to this one in view of the concerns some have mentioned, and I must
say the truck
doesn't bother me: in fact, I think it adds to the composition. My eye went

truck, before going
to the sky. My only quibble would be I would have gone as close to the fence

The barn placement troubles me.
It must be the strong color and near
center location.
The insignificant wire fence has no role and the far elements fail to supply
the necessary weight to
count them as points of interest.

Dear Dan, Pentax lenses have always been technically very advanced - at least
my first SLR bought pre owned in 1975 - a Spotmatic with a Takumar proved to be.

The reason I latched on to Pentax were the grand Lenses - after owning a
Pentacon, Nikon, Kiev-19, Leica, Ricoh SLRs.

I was amazed at the 35 - 135 F3.5 "A" zoom lens. Sharp all the way through -
remember that this is not a computer designed lens. And I picked one up in Mint
condition from a Pop & Mom Store in the San Francisco Bay Area for $65 + Tax.

I have attached my first attempt at Water Drop Photography using this lens
which also has Macro - see attached link.

Does anyone have any experience shooting in long narrow rooms?

I've been doing some work on my car trailer to get it prepped for an event in a
couple of weeks, and
realized that it is basically an empty room that might have some potential for
portraiture. It's
basically 20'
long, a little over 7' wide and about 7' high.

On one hand, it's way too tight for using studio strobes. I might be able to
get away with
speedlights. I also might be able to use LED bulbs in clamplights as hot
lights. I might also be
able to bounce light off of one wall for rembrandt lighting.

I'll almost certainly be experimenting with it in the near future, but I figure
it's worth a chance
learning from other people's mistakes.

2017-05-28 Thread John Coyle
Brian, I was in the same situation up till a couple of months ago: then I had
an SSD with W10 put
into my Toshiba laptop, and the techie transferred all my installs at the same
time - did a
brilliant job. Now the thing is incredibly fast, even though it is now 8 years
old!

I'd try that rather than using the old HDD, which could be close to failing
anyway.

I might have to try that.

My old Vista laptop hasn't been updated for about a year because the Update

Hey Chris - Were you ever at the Kingston plant? I was an engineering

Very good Dan - and through a canopy too?

They used to make canopies for Hawker Hunters, Harriers and Hawks in the

did my apprenticeship. Very specialised and I remember seeing a bloody great
sheet of hot Perspex
being draped over a greasy wooden mould. It was then subject to a lot of
polishing to make it
optically perfect and to remove any distortion - after all, the pilot ideally
would want to see the

Well, after letting my photography domain lapse I went back to get it back.

And what do I find? Someone took it.

So I reregistered it as an org rather than a com. Otherwise same name.

I also reregistered my other main site (re games) as a .com rather than an
.org. Otherwise same
name.

So some one goes around grabbing up old domain names, buys them, and then tries
to resell them to
the original owners.

Which means I would have to pay a fee on top of a fee. No Way Jose.

Did you guys know this? I am probably slow on the uptake and you all knew this
already.

These things are quite straightforward really. The simple rule is, however it's
spelt, that's not how you say it. If you say it the way it's spelt everyone
will know you're a tourist, and charge you £300 for an ice-cream.

Cirencester= Siren sessta
Gloucester = Glossta
Bicester = Bissta

Leominster = Lemsta
Southwark = Suthuk

Greenwich = Grinnidge

The only exception to the rule, and only in the context of this one place, is
Leicester Square, which is invariably pronounced Lie Sessta Squaw, with the
emphasis on Sessta. Nobody can really explain this, but it may be that on this
one occasion the locals just gave up trying to teach the correct pronunciation
to foreigners, and instead put ice-cream prices up to £350, plus 10% if want a
flake and crushed nuts.

It's coming along. I noticed late last year that I wasn't seeing things at
distance as well as i was used to, and wrote it off as needing a new
prescription. Then I was thirsty all the time, and over the course of a couple
of weeks my vision went bad enough that something 5 feet away was a blur and
looking at a computer screen was excruciatingly painful.
And it dawned on me that I was probably diabetic, which was the case.
I've been medicating for about a month, and my eyesight is passable, but my
blood sugar is controlled at about 16mg/l, about double what it should be.
I have another blood test on Monday, another doctors visit on Friday, and will
probably have my medication increased.
Something I learned was that the high blood pressure med I was on interfered
with metformine. We got that fixed a week ago, and this week I feel a lot
better than the warm turd I've felt like since the end of January.

thanks

bill

RE: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh

I've owned Pentax cameras (with one exception) since 1968, and have never had
cause to complain.
Like all mechanical or electronic items, they can break and need repairs, but
I've only once had to
send a Pentax camera in for repair!  I expect to be using my current crop
(MZ-S, *ist-d, K5ii-s, SV
and a couple of other older models) until hell freezes over.  I'll be sorry if
Ricoh do drop out,
they've done some good stuff in the last few years - BUT, they do need to
market!

The fact is at my age my Pentax kit will probably outlast me, so I'm good to go!

I doubt if it will affect me much, if at all.

I anticipate buying at most one more traditional DSLR - I don't feel tempted by
the K1, but might be
interested if there was a follow-up APS-C model with most of the improvements
from the K1 (and, no
doubt, a few more as well).

If that doesn't materialise I'll probably either stick with what I have today
or switch over to
Olympus; the EPL1 has served me well over the years, but is several generations
behind in sensor
technology (though still good enough for casual everyday use ).

This is rather extreme but for some reason my news aggregator app thought t was
worth it...

The endgame for cameras is having no camera at all:
http://news360.com/article/398182387

Seems eerily rrelated to most recent news about Ricoh.

You know, in my opinion, what really is killing the cameras is not a small
camera inside the cell
phone, but in fact the cell phone screen.

Most of the ways for which regular camera is optimised are obsolete. People
look at the photos on
their cell phone screen and there cell phone cameras rein supreme...

Just my pixels.

RE: OT: Digital Slide scanners

I still have a ScanWit 720 scanner, but have been unable to find SCSI/USB
linking cables for it, and
the original SCSI PCI card software will not install in later PC's. It's now

OTOH, the Epson V500 does the same job really well, with either the Epson

Subject: Re: OT: Digital Slide scanners

A long time ago, it seems, I bought an ACER ScanWit 2720s. It's a SCSI
interface device, and while
it's supplied software is hopelessly dated, there is third party software,
(ViewScan), that will
actually give better scans, taking full advantage of the hardware, which the
original software never
did. It got very good reviews for it's output, and specifications equaled or
bettered much more
expensive units, (when I bought it they were available new for approximately
$300). It produced a
9mp scans which I saved as TIFF files and corrected in Photoshop.

There are four notable drawbacks to it.

It's limited to 35mm filmstrips or slides of 24x36mm mounted in standard
mounts, you can scan
smaller but not larger so superslides are out thought I think 126 slides will
work though the
software didn't support it, (110 format slides scanned well, but at a greatly
reduced resolution of
course, I wish I had a few samples but all those scans disappeared in a hard
drive crash).

The slide and film carriers are made entirely out of plastic, and since
the original
manufacturer sold out to BANQ the scanner, and it's bigger brother, 2047s which
included digital
ICE, are long discontinued so parts including new carriers are made of
unobtainable.

Scanning speeds are oow, so bulk scanning is problematic,
though how much of
that was due to the limitations of PC hardware at the time is a question, (I
doubt that the scanner
has a particularly large or even any actual buffer built in.

Finally reading the specifications, I'm not at all sure that it would
actually outperform a
current Epson Perfection V550 or V600 which
will scan up to 6x9cm slides and negatives. So the effort to getting
either ScanWit up and running on modern hardware on a modern OS may not be
worth the effort,
especially as you'd actually have to find one, but if you're interested Amazon
has on in their
warehouse used for only $127.00

RE: Anyone in Paris?

2017-03-31 Thread John Coyle
Hi Daniel - try the Parc Monceau, entering from the gates opposite the Rue de
Prony along Boulevard
de Courcelles. It's very pretty, and a more up-market part of Paris: my wife
and I explored it
together for the first time for both of us in 1995.
I always avoided the Bois de Boulogne, too big and some dodgy goings-on
happening there!
An interesting walk is from the Pigalle metro station, up along Rue Houdon,
left into Rue des
Abbesses, which becomes Rue Lepic and takes you eventually close to the Place
du Tertre. Not too
far, quite a lot of uphill, but I always found it colourful and some really good
bistros/restaurants, populated by the locals, which is always a good sign!

I don't think I've ever seen an M series 55mm - and only rarely the SuperTak
55/1.8.

RE: GESO - Coyles in New Orleans

2017-02-16 Thread John Coyle
Hi Ken - thanks: we didn't try beignets at Café du Monde, but we did have
coffee at their Riverwalk
outlet - didn't know about their French Market shop at the time! However,
beignets at a little
place in the Garden District (the hidden secret place) were absolutely
delicious!
New Orleans is definitely a place on our "we'd like to go there again" list.

RE: GESO - Coyles in New Orleans

2017-02-13 Thread John Coyle
Thanks Ann - actually didn't take any shots of food! I must say we had both
good and bad, but my
po'boy and jambalaya (different meals, of course!) were both excellent.
For great vegetarian, can recommend "1000 Figs" on Ponce de Leon St., near the
junction with
Esplanade Ave - best beetroot salad I've ever tasted.

Hi Cotty - I used jAlbum to produce the interface, which is designed to use

also work on non-Java systems but maybe this is why you had a clunky experience?

Thanks for posting, enjoyed looking. The interface is really clunky on my
system and seems to take
ages to load and progress through, meant I gave up about halfway. Nice of what
I did see though :-)
