[MOSAIC] How to unsubscribe
Please do not send notes to the *entire* list of 3000 people when you want help with your membership. Over the past day or so we've generated over 10,000 messages with this type of request. Use Footer Link The link at the footer of each message DOES work. I just tested it. When you asked to removed it will sent you a message that REQUIRES a response from you to complete the change. If you don't reply, then you are not removed. Contact Keith km...@literacyworkshop.org As an alternative you can always send a message to me and I can easily remove you. I checked her Twitter feed and she has a link to her Facebook page with an update: https://www.facebook.com/KyleneBeers/posts/10203310508058157 Here's the first bit of her post from earlier today: Teachers: Bob Probst and I are moving into the homestretch of writing the companion book to Notice and Note, the one that will focus on the reading of nonfiction. We need some help from some creative teachers who would be willing to make the anchor charts for the signposts for nonfiction that we could show in the book, the way we showed anchor charts in NN. [MOSAIC] list reminders
It's good to see interest picking up on the Mosaic List. I'm seeing a lot of messages that are being rejected so here's some reminders. 1. Send only to mosaic@literacyworkshop.org Our list will only accept messages that are ONLY to the list. NOBODY else can be listed. If you include any other person or organization as a recipient (Cc or BCc), the message will be rejected. The reason for this is that spammers and hijackers almost always send messages to multiple people. I've already seen 8-10 messages rejected today for this reason. 2. Trim Your Messages We also reject messages that are too long. This is 99% due to a person not deleting quoted text from previous messages. Please trim quoted text before you send to list as it helps everyone. 3. Mosaic List is Public Anything posted on our list can be accessed by anyone. This includes people at your school as well as employers and prospective employers. We cannot delete anything after it is posted. 4. Attachments Not Allowed We do not allow attachments to be sent to this list. If you want to share a personal document that you created you can send to me (kmack@literacyworkshop) and I will post on the website. 5. Forced Moderation When a situation needs to be cooled off, the list will be put on forced moderation. That means that every message has to be approve by me. Frequently this happens when people start the me too requests. If you want a member to send you something, PLEASE contact the member not the 3,000+ members of the list that can't send you the resource. We also moderate the list when there are perceived personal attacks on a topic. This doesn't happen very often, but can come with strong beliefs and commitments to certain topics and practices. Posting to Mosaic is a privilege and not a right so please focus your posts on improving reading and literacy instruction. If you ever need help with anything on this list, please contact Keith Mack (km...@literacyworkshop.org). [MOSAIC] rejected messages
Just want to remind everyone that we only allow messages to be sent to this list and this list only. If there is any other email address, then the post will be rejected with a message to the sender to trim the recipient list. I see a lot of rejections with: To: mosaic@literacyworkshop.org Cc: mosaic@literacyworkshop.org I'm not sure why this happens. Most everyone would not send a message to a friend and then also Cc the same friend. Just please be careful when you are sending if you want message to get through. The *only* address can be the one to Mosaic. No others will be allowed. This policy is done to prevent the large number of spammers and email hijackers from posting to the list. These attackers frequently send messages to multiple people. Not allowing this practice keeps spam messages minimalized. I think Jennifer will be letting the list know of details about taking part in an online book study for Opening Minds. So be looking for this if you are interested. If you want to reply to her message you should reply to her directly at jennifer.pal...@hcps.org. Please contact me off list with any questions or problems with your membership. [MOSAIC] New Lesson Plan Common Core Grade 2
I've just posted a long lesson plan related to a children's book A Butterfly's Dream by Erin Fox on the Mosaic website. This lesson is shared to us by Donna Fox (proud aunt!) saying that, It is aligned to the new national common core standards, and of course I tried to stay true to the beliefs shared by those in the mosaic listserve. You can view the lesson on the Mosaic Tools page at the bottom of the lesson plan area. It is available in Word or PDF format. http://www.readinglady.com/mosaic/tools/tools.htm The book is listed a Barnes and Noble: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/a-butterflys-dream-erin-fox/1109574305 Thanks to Donna for her willingness to share this resource! [MOSAIC] problems with membership - opt out/in
Just wanted to let everyone know that I decided to put the list on emergency moderation due to a number of messages sent by members regarding opt in or opt out or other membership things. First, I'm not sure that this message was sent by our server as it doesn't look like anything I've seen. Secondly, when we send out messages about membership this comes from the owner and not the entire listserv. If there is a reason for a membership to be removed, out system sends out a number of warnings. These will come from mosaic owner and not mosaic@literacyworkshop.org. So please resist the urge to reply to these messages at this time. I regret that somehow we've been caught up in this spoof and that I had to take action. If you ever have a need to modify your membership, just contact me. This was true 5 years ago and is still true now. [MOSAIC] No other recipients allowed when sending to our list
Since we just received a couple messages from a hacked email account, I want to remind everyone about sending messages to our list. SEND *ONLY* TO MOSAIC Hackers will typically send a message to multiple people by either using Cc or Bcc (this includes putting yourself in this field). If you include another recipient when sending to our list, the message *will* be *denied*. I'm sorry this has to be enforced, but the only other option would be to moderate every message. Please send *only* to Mosaic when posting a message. When you see obvious spam as we did earlier, just delete the message and move on. There is no need to comment on it to the entire list. [MOSAIC] Explanation for delays in posting messages
Just to let everyone know that there is a 10,000 messages per hour throttle on the Mosaic list. Without this sort of limit, organizations and email providers can target our messages as spam. When list is very active it is common for messages to be help up for several hours. Please accept this delay as part of keeping a delicate balance so that our messages stay under the radar for spam detection. That said, everyone can help out by not re-posting a message if you don't see it right away. Members can also help by not posting thank-you's, I agree, or other terse messages that don't forward a conversation. [MOSAIC] Resources and asking for documents
I don't keep a steady eye on Mosaic, but have seen the me too's pop up in the last few weeks. As always, I can put any documents that members are willing to share on the Mosaic Website. The problem is knee jerk reactions without a millisecond of thinking. This is easily solved when one or more of the following occurs: 1. The original post by person includes something like: please contact me at m...@email.com to request a copy. 2. The original post by person includes something like: I will send the document to Keith to put on the website. 3. Mosaic members reading the post search to find the person's email and send reply to the person and not the 3000+ members of the list. ***please notice I put responsibility *first* on people preemptively telling members how they will share the resource. All that said, I no longer put the list on moderation when this happens. I just don't have the time an energy to keep threads in line. Mosaic has its own isolated IP address. When we get the me toos ISP providers like Comcast and AOL perk up their ears when they see their servers flooded with email from Mosaic and shut it down because it shows spam-like behavior (we probably . So the careless me toos can cause members to have email from Mosaic blocked. I tend to look at it like the time I brought a tub of red licorice to a school field trip and the me too kids rushed to get a hand full and all licorice sadly went on the dirt. So all members please be careful and resist the knee jerk reaction to hit reply and send. Think for a second on what you're about to do. [MOSAIC] FW: care and advice for sending to list
I'd like to post a couple reminders as the list gears up for more action during the school year. ONLY SEND TO LIST Mosaic list will not accept messages that include any other recipients. This is done to avoid spurious messages from hacked email account. So do NOT send message that have additional people or groups in To or Cc fields. Messages with additional recipients are held by the server and will be rejected . Rejected messages will say something like: Please trim the recipient list... Please remember send list messages *only* to the Mosaic list. There cannot be another person included anywhere. DELAYS DUE TO THROTTLING In order to stay under the radar from ISP spam watchers, I have imposed a 10,000 messages per hour limit on this list (3-4 posts per hour). In really active times messages may take several hours to post. Please *do not ever resend messages* as this will only add to the wait time. USE PLAIN TEXT The list is set up to only allow plain text. Emails sent in HTML will be stripped of all formatting and posted as text only. Quite often member messages are rejected by our sever due to excessive HTML. If you want your voice to be heard use TEXT. Most email clients have a pull down menu that allows you to change between text and HTML format. TRIM MESSAGES A constant problem for our list is quoted material on messages. As a matter of professional courtesy, please trim your replies to include only essential information from previous posts. Usually this can be just a few words. This saves valuable server resources and also is of extreme help to our hundreds of member professionals getting the digest version. PROFESSIONAL ETIQUETTE FOR REPLYING TO LIST MESSAGES See: http://www.mail-archive.com/mosaic@literacyworkshop.org/msg01817.html LIST FOCUS The Mosaic List was founded with an emphasis on reading and literacy instruction (see: http://www.readinglady.com/mosaic). This is not something that we take lightly. From time to time you will see temporary bird walks into other educational areas. These are allowed as long as they are brief. Any time posts and threads delve into politics, religion, personal affronts, or other personal areas, they will be asked to cease or move to another forum. This list is *not* moderated unless there's a need. PRIVACY The Mosaic List archive is public. Things posted on the list can be accessed by the public including your school staff and your parents. So please keep this in mind. Once a message is posted it cannot be recalled. The Mosaic membership list is always confidential and is not shared to sold to anyone. [MOSAIC] Reminder on list focus and etiquitte
I've noticed that we have had a few threads that have strayed from the Focus Points that the Mosaic list was founded upon: * comprehension strategy instruction * questions about implementation * action research by teachers based on experiences in strategy teaching * reading workshop * authentic assessment * strategy instruction as it relates to high stakes testing * professional reading ideas that forward professional practice * lesson write ups/book suggestions (see: http://www.readinglady.com/mosaic/) While I don't think there's any great harm done, I'd like to gently suggest that members try to hold their posts to topics that are focused on literacy instruction. We've had the words political climate enter into recent subject lines and this is very shaky ground for most any list. Those of you that want to find birds of feather about off-focus topics such can form other lists or use social networks such as Twitter or Facebook to advance or promote these ideas. This group's focus is on literacy. Also, I want to remind everyone that Mosaic's archives are public and so once you post something, it cannot be removed. Additionally several members are holding individual conversations on this list. Please remember change your reply to the PERSON and not the entire list when appropriate. We are seeing a lot of thanks and me too, thinks that you'd send in a text message in a private conversation. This is putting a strain on our server that is entirely unnecessary. To review, I am asking that our members to: 1. Maintain our list focus on literacy and professional practice. 2. Move off-topic discussions to other lists or networks 3. Send individual replies to the ONE person and not the entire group of 3000+ members 4. Please, please, please *trim your replies*. We're getting a lot of messages with 3-4 new words and pages of repeated text. (this especially for those using phones, Blackberry, or handhelds to reply). Your help in maintaining the group focus as well as the professional approach and etiquette that has long characterized this list would be greatly appreciated. [MOSAIC] mosaic-bounces+... in header
All messages that members get from Mosaic have mosaic-bounces+etc... in the message header. The mosaic-bounces+etc... is little prefix that helps the server track messages and has nothing to do with any of your messages bouncing...unless a message *sent* to you gets bounced back to the Mosaic server. This is called variable envelope return path or VERP. If you want more info (geek speak) on why we use VERP please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_envelope_return_path. Just a reminder to everyone to *trim* message. We're experiencing a lot of messages that include way too much quoted text from previous posts. Re: [MOSAIC] Is there a problem - Spring Break Quiet Time
Lists frequently go through some quiet times. This is an especially busy time of year with last trimester/quarter, conferences, breaks, and state testing (not to mention taxes are due on Monday). Typically this is a quiet time on this list. One way to check messages is to go to our archives by clicking on the link at the end of this message (try it...it's down there). By looking at the archives you can see what has been posted (last message was about a week ago). If messages had been posted and you weren't getting them, contact me personally so I can help. If, as in this case, you see that nothing's been posted then relax and wait...people will post again. Thanks and to everyone - enjoy your break, errr...testing...errr...taxes?!?! Re: [MOSAIC] Important please!! - Obvious email Scams
We've seen this type of message before and will likely seem them again. This is from a hijacked email account. The attacker takes over the user account and then uses the account in hopes of getting at least one (ahem) concerned friend/family to reply and send money which sometimes gets into the sending of even more money. Please don't waste your time and other's time by replying to this sort of obvious hoax or by trying to get authorities involved. The account owner is likely locked out of the account either by the hacker or by their provider. As always, all email users should use high strength passwords on their accounts to combat this type of attack. I have instigated some filters to catch most of these spam/scam messages, but we'll undoubtedly see more from time to time in the future. Once again, do yourself and others on our list a favor by totally ignoring this type of message. Now, please excuse me...I just got a message about collecting my 4.7 Million Euro winnings from a French lottery. ;-) Bonjour, Keith Mack Web Administrator http://www.literacyworkshop.org -Original Message- Who can we report the SCAM to? - Original Message - obviously this is spam - Original Message - Hi, I hope you get this message in time Sorry I didn't inform you about my trip to Africa Nigeria for a program,It was an emergency,I am currently in Africa Nigeria, something awful has happened to me !!! [MOSAIC] The Pressures of Teaching - Free eBook download
Ginger sent me information that Mosaic member Maureen Robins' book The Pressures of Teaching is available for a limited time at no charge. This eBook format is only for portable devices such as Kindle, iPhone/Pad, Sony eReader, and Nook. My understanding is that there is not a stand alone format for computers (i.e. PDF). At this time it seems that there are a number of free books available to people with newer eBook devices. This appears to be a limited time opportunity, but it may be that vendors rotate free books to generate interest in their particular format. My disclaimer is that I don't have a device and can't answer any device questions. But I'm' sure we have an expert or two in our midst that might be willing to answer questions that members might post on this thread. It appears to me that you would likely need to enter information at some point to get a free book. This can be a simple registration (like most already have at Amazon) or an entry into a contest, etc. For those of you with the new eBook devices, the whole thing might be seamless. So, here are some links (you may have to search Maureen Robbins or The Pressures of Teaching or any other key words for books you want): Kaplan (all formats): http://www.FreeKaplaneBooks.com Barnes Noble (Nook format): http://tinyurl.com/4skyqa7 Amazon (Kindle format) http://tinyurl.com/4nppkzd Thanks, Keith Mack Web Administrator http://www.literacyworkshop.org ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. [MOSAIC] Your help needed as Mosaic moves ahead
Mosaic will be off emergency moderation by end of day on Monday. That said, I have information that I would like ALL members to seriously consider. As you know we live an email world dominated by spam. The result is that many big providers like MSN, AOL, Comcast, etc. have email server software relentlessly looking 24/7 for spammers sending out lots of messages. The Mosaic group often falls into a suspicious sender category because: 1. Email providers' software sees a lot of messages from Mosaic. 2. Server software knows that Spammers send out lots of messages. 3. Therefore, Mosaic is sending spam and is blocked. It's simply a numbers game and it is brutally efficient. In the last week we've been blocked by Comcast, WaveCable, AOL, and Yahoo along with a whole bunch of K-12 and university servers. This was not caused by the actions of our list, but by other circumstances that rolled up on my server provider. I know we are an innocent victim but server software doesn't care. Basically, Mosaic lived on the same block as a spammer; therefore we were branded as spammers. Your help is really needed more than ever and here's what you can do... Please remember every Mosaic message or reply is sent out to about 3000 people. A 10 message day for Mosaic means that about 30,000 messages flow out to providers. This means that a busy day for us will mean over 50,000 messages sent out. Believe me, this gets noticed. Please try to ensure that messages your send to Mosaic advance conversations and provide all members with pertinent information and/or supporting explanations. In other words, we want our messages to count for sharing ideas, resources, and experiences. Please trim your replies to include only the briefest quote of a previous message. This means we want to see your 20 words with a few previous message words. We do NOT want to see your 20 words that include 12 pages of other's people words that have already been seen. Be green in your replies! Please...Contact ONE person when you want to ask ONE person a question. Contact ONE person when you want to ask ONE person for a resource. Contact ONE person when you want to tell ONE person that you agree with him/her. Please contact ME with any questions about your membership. If you want to make sure you get Mosaic emails, I'd like to point you to consider Gmail as we have yet to be blocked by this provider. As always, you can read and search posts to Mosaic by going to the archives at the link at the bottom of this message - no membership is required. I really appreciate your time and efforts to help Mosaic survive and thrive in the months and years ahead. There is great worth in this community's wisdom and sharing. [MOSAIC] List Etiquette regarding Phishing scams (again!)
This whole scam thing is getting tiresome but... We again have experienced a hijacked member account sending messages to our list. The only way to avoid these obvious phishing emails is to put the Mosaic list on Emergency Moderation. So we are on emergency moderation at this time. Again, this is NOT a situation that I want to enforce but it saves members from being feed additional messages from scammers and keeps members accounts being disabled due to software reports of sending large amounts of messages. This type of hijacked email is done through hacking a users' password - generally on a Yahoo, AOL, Gmail or other free email account. From my experience in educational technology, I can tell you that this is extremely easy to do. I have personally been able to guess a password in under 5 tries with most staff at my school. So hardened passwords will definitely make this type of scam more difficult. Those of your using any free email account should immediately change your password to protect your account...and please do not change your password to a pet, offspring, or any other easily guessed password. The typical hijacked user email account will send out a plea for help such as: I'm caught up in a real mess and i need your help. I'm sorry I didn't inform you about my, I had a trip to the London, United Kingdom... ...the key word on most of these is UK or England... Gosh, I hope you are informed enough NEVER, and I repeat NEVER, NEVER to reply to this sort of thing. The message is from a hijacked email account. Replying in any way just adds to the trouble... When you reply to the individual person in the message, it is forwarded to a scammer (err...criminal?!?) who will contact you to try to get funds from you. DO NOT EVER REPLY TO THIS TYPE OF MESSAGE! Replying to the message to our Mosaic list of 3000 members does not do any good as well. As reported above, do NOT every reply. DO NOT EVER REPLY, even if you personally know the sender. Please TRASH the message and move on with your life. Again, TRASH THE MESSAGE! Be aware that any time I see this type of phishing message to our list, that I put the list on emergency moderation. This is done to keep an additional 10-20 messages regarding the *obvious* scam to be perpetuated to our membership (deep sigh). Unfortunately it also requires my approval on legitimate list messages. So, please IGNORE any message from this list asking you to help a person. I'm an educator too, and really want to help everyone (it's in our nature!). BUT do not ever help anyone online without hours of investigation. IGNORE, IGNore, igNOre, and IGNORE this type of message. Replying in any way to the Mosaic membership of 3000+ causes additional waste of resources and in some obtuse way also perpetuates the scam. I've already rejected a half dozen message related the scam. Please don't take these types of rejection personally, but as good online stewards, we cannot post another 100,000+ messages on some scam Thanks, Keith Mack Web Administrator http://www.literacyworkshop.org ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. [MOSAIC] Growing Concern - please be dilligent in replies
As you might have noticed, we've been off emergency moderation for a day or so. I would like to again thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the last week or so while we dealt with spam issues and other circumstances on the Mosaic list. Please read the below and understand that I need a place to share my and (ahem) vent my frustrations. In the last 12 hours or so we've seen a lot of individual conversations on our list. These are messages asking ONE PERSON for something, asking ONE PERSON for help, or thanking ONE PERSON for a resource. If we had been on moderation, most of these messages would have been rejected because they should have been sent to ONE PERSON. As noted, we are not currently on moderation. The key word above is ONE PERSON. Most messages needed ONE PERSON to help and not 3000+ members to troubleshoot or think about an idea. When on moderation, I usually reject the ONE PERSON messages and direct the sender to contact the ONE PERSON. If you ask the entire membership to help and then 10 members might also reply to the entire list. If list traffic is unmoderated, we easily have a spike of 50,000 messages. This WILL BE NOTICED by server spam software and filters and providers WILL TAKE ACTION. I personally don't mind the large number of messages. Like many Mosaic members, I delete these quickly and move on with my life - no worries. BUT...other providers with their server software packages are watching and WILL NOTICED the spike in traffic. The problem we have with large numbers of posts in a short time period is that MSN, HotMail, AOL, and the other big boys *do* wake up and see that a large numbers of messages are being sent by our server. Their sever software quickly decides that they must stop our server as it can only be spam. In recent months these providers essentially shut down messages from our server due to *excessive abuse* (too many messages sent in a short amount of time to their clients). No messages from our server can get through to people on their server. Mosaic members using these servers are put on inactive status and then quickly deleted from our membership list because messages sent to them are bouncing. This means that impacted Mosaic members with email accounts provided by the hosts are severely impacted, but more importantly for me, business clients that I also host on my server cannot send messages to their contacts. It is all very arbitrary, unkind, and non-human. But software and no real people are making these decisions. This is a HUGE problem for everyone involved - especially me as I am forced to intervene by trying to find solutions with the big boys and for people paying me money to host their email accounts and businesses. This can take hours and hours and hours of my time to troubleshoot and I never get to talk or work with a real, understanding person. I really, *really*, REALLY don't want to get moderation started again (in fact I never want to invoke moderation!). I'm asking, nay...*pleading*, that you think twice before sending a message out to thousands of people (those of you with mobile devices PLEASE take notice). Mosaic has probably sent out in excess of 70,000 emails to the entire membership in the last 18 hours that might have been best served with less than 12 *individual* messages (not sent from our server). I have to admit that I might agree with the big boys that this is a form of abuse of resources. Gosh, please, PLEASE be careful when you send a message! Big Brother IS watching. The bottom line is that I'm expecting a big provider(s) to block our server at any time today unless members can show restraint. The other alternative is that we put Mosaic back on moderation. I'm begging (on virtual knees) that when you need ONE PERSON to provide a URL, or access to some resource, or want to be included in ONE PERSON's distribution, or want to thank ONE PERSON, or want to agree with ONE PERSON's idea, please do it INDIVIDUALLY and not to the entire list. As many of you know, I'm a former literacy teacher and really want support the Mosaic group. This is a powerful community of professions and we all want it to continue to grow and help teaching and learning. Please know that I do not benefit financially from the Mosaic list - the work that Ginger, Jennifer, Laura and I do for this list is entirely voluntary. There are no corporate offices and no underpaid staff members and interns involved in providing support for this group. Everyone's help in this matter would be *deeply* appreciated. Re: [MOSAIC] teaching the book vs. teaching the reader
I can tell that there are multiple, strong opinions on a variety issues regarding instruction and practice and this is a good thing. I just want to make sure that our members keep posts focused on methods and not personal affronts. I think that this conversation is valuable so please keep your opinions professional and respectful. I don't think any of us can assume to know the one best way to teach and reach the broad group of students in any give classroom. As an 8th grade LA/Reading teacher I found that certain kids benefited more from certain teaching styles and environments. A student that struggled with my (ahem) expert teaching went on to flourish when we switched the student to another teacher's classroom. I didn't take this as a rejection of my teaching, but on better meeting the needs of a particular student. When we are on emergency moderation, I only see the first sentence or two of a post. This is helpful to me time-wise as I can quickly determine if a post is legitimate and not spam or something that should be sent to a person and not the entire membership. So please, post and *support* your opinions on professional practice and not a person. There is great value in respectful discussion. I have just rejected a couple messages that seemed a bit inflammatory and personal. I don't claim to catch every inappropriate message. Be kind, respectful and thoughtful and please let me put away my moderation Nazi hat. I am going to lean towards extreme caution while this thread is active. [MOSAIC] Sending terse messages about resources
First of all, I want everyone to know that we are again on emergency moderation due to a spam message that was posted yesterday. This means that I must approve all messages before they are sent out to the list. Resending the same message several times doesn't help me approve it any sooner. My second item is my concern that members have recently been sending exceptionally terse replies to recent threads that have requesting ideas or resources. I am rejecting a large percentage of responses on this thread (66%?). These are responses where people just send a person's name, a URL, or some other book/resource name. Typically these messages are less than 5 words and sent from mobile devices. When you are recommending a resource to the professional educators on Mosaic, please include more than just a name, URL, or title. Your personal opinion on the applicable strategies/ideas is vitally important. You should include your views on the benefits/concerns that students and/or teachers have experienced. If possible, please provide other information on where to view or get the resource. Providing a precise link to the *specific* page within a website is much preferable to just giving us the site's homepage. I don't enjoy being the moderating Nazi for this list, but when I put on my moderating hat, I certainly want to uphold a certain standard. You wouldn't likely allow your students to give a book talk and just mention the book name. You would prod them to include the author, add their opinions, give an example, and then let people know where to get the book. When moderating I will hold you to this same standard. I'm not asking for 5 paragraphs, but I think that adding some personal experiences and opinions is a MUST when recommending resources. A few complete sentences would be great! I think that this is a list that values ideas along with resources so I want to advance ideas and not the shout outs of names and acronyms. Re: [MOSAIC] How to create a database or spreadsheet of books?
Another site for classroom libraries is referenced in this nice Creating a Classroom article on Reading Rockets: http://www.readingrockets.org/article/29298 The article references the online service at: http://www.librarything.com/ I have not used this resource, but recalled some conversations with people that did and really like it. My caution to educators is to make sure you test any of these referenced sites and also let your administrator(s) and tech people know what you want to achieve by using these services. One more idea that I thought of is to use a classroom blog. I won't go into links or providers. You could create a blog with you (teacher) as owner and then create a secondary user (contributor). Students would use the secondary user/contributor to create book info. Teacher/owner would have to approve all the entries. In blog I would see a teacher setting up various categories for books. In a blog like this, you could also allow for comments which would include your students or other that want to add their voice to the book into. Of course, the teacher/owner can set comments so that they must have approval before being posted on the site. The key idea would be that the teachers must approve anything before it is posted on the blog. We run Word Press MU (multiple user) for blogs at the http://www.literacyworkshop.org website . This is free software that could easily be integrated by schools. If you have questions or want help on this you can email me off-list. [MOSAIC] List Update and start of school
This is the last week or so of summer vacation and then the startup of fall classes. Some of you have already started school. Typically this is represented by fewer messages and threads to the list. If you wonder whether the list is working, please do *not* send a test message to the list. Just go to the archive at http://snipurl.com/MosaicArchive where you can check on the recent posts to the list. As always, if you have questions about membership, if the list is broken, or things related to the list, please contact me personally - km...@literacyworkshop.org. Another reminder is that you PLEASE trim your replies. We have a large number of replies that include entire quotes and quotes and pages and pages of previous messages. This is a problem for many members (esp. digest) and can also cause problems with email providers. Providers' servers often think we are sending out spam due to excessive links to our website and archives. These links come from members that are not trimming their replies. I am going to remove the emergency moderation that has been used in the last few weeks. As I do this, I want to remind everyone to think before they hit the send button (and take a deep breath and think again?). The thanks, requests for materials, me too, etc. messages are sent to thousands of people. Please send these types of messages to the individual and *not* the entire list. [MOSAIC] Return to Emergency Moderation
I regret to inform everyone that we have returned to emergency moderation. This is due to the large volume of email being sent in regards to conversations/threads on the Book Whisperer chat. In the last week we've seen a huge increase in list traffic which has caused the big providers like Yahoo, AOL, and HotMail/MSN to take notice. HotMail and MSN have decided to block all of our list messages. This is because to their computers/filters we look like we are sending spam. We've had about 150 HotMail/MSN members disabled due to this problem in the last 36 hours. Unfortunately they won't get any messages from our server about this problem. Emergency Moderation will allow me to release messages more gradually and also reject messages that might be best sent to a person and not 3000 members. I would ask everyone to make sure that messages that you send to the list are advancing the conversation. Terse comments such as Yes, I agree, or what do you teach?, etc. will be rejected by me. If you send to the list you will see a returned message that your post is awaiting moderation approval. Please do NOT resend the message. The server got your message and needs me to click on the approve box first. Resending the message might make me cranky; however the server will just put it in the queue along with the same message you sent earlier. I have to approve EVERY post and it might be 12+ hours before you see your message posted. If I reject your message you will also see this returned to you with a short reason why it was rejected. I want to also remind you that Mosaic and The Literacy Workshop are not huge corporations. It's basically me and a few other educators that are volunteering our time to make this list work. Most of us have at least one other full time job. There are no corporate offices, sales teams, business and marketing professionals, administrative assistants, and IP staff. So things are likely to slow up on the list due to the issue above. We will get to things as soon as we can so please be patient. Once we end the book chat we hope to turn off moderation. In the future we will host book chats on separate lists so that we can minimize arousing suspicions of the big providers and their computers (this has been done in the past). We considered this option for The Book Whisperer conversation, but decided against this because in the past our members have indicated a preference for keeping book chats on the main list. As you can see, this has created a short term problem. Should you need help for any problem or question, please contact me off-list. [MOSAIC] hacked email accounts - emergency moderation
Our list is once again on emergency moderation due to a member hacked email account sending out spam (I intercepted before it was posted). When I see this it usually is followed by an increase in this sort of detestable activity. I just want to caution people about hacked email accounts. This has been seen with messages sent to our list primarily from AOL accounts, but others are not safe. It has been an ongoing problem over the last month or so. A couple things to help everyone: 1. NEVER click on a URL from our list unless you have total confidence on where that click will take you. So if you see a URL from a member that looks strange or out of character, please (double please!) RESIST the urge to click. If a message contains ONLY a URL, the NEVER click on it. 2. Keep your computer updated with some sort of virus protection. A good free PC vendor is Panda Cloud (Google this). Now, this is not saying that a Mac person using AOL is totally safe - everyone please use diligence. 3. If you suspect problems, look at your Sent Mail. Should you see a bunch of messages that you don't remember sending, then contact your provider and/or immediately suspend the account (just like you'd do with a compromised bank card/identity). 4. As mentioned before, I put myself on moderation due to a glut of spoofed emails that have been sent to the list. So, please don't think that you are beyond the reach of nefarious ne'er-do-wells and their lackeys. I regret having to return to emergency moderation as it does impede the progress of dialogue in the community. As I moderate, I will often reject the terse I agree or Thanks for the help or myriad of other five word messages sent to the thousands of members that would be better sent to the individual. Please remember to thanks and send compliments to the *individual* and NOT, repeat *NOT*, to the entire list. Hopefully we'll be back to normal in a few days (ahem - I used to tell my students normal is a cycle on a washing machine anyone know the book this quote is from? - contact me off list to compare notes). ;-) Again, thanks for your caution and understanding on this matter. [MOSAIC] spam injection into legitimate list messages
At this point many of you have received and read a message from a member about some medical problems in the UK. This is BOGUS SPAM - ignore it. This is an example of vicious spam that was propagated through our list by a totally unsuspecting member. I would hope that most of you realized that this message was NOT legitimate and then deleted it right away. I also understand that some of your spam software may have rejected the message outright so you never saw it. Unfortunately, the message was posted to the list without the knowledge of the poster. I'm mostly disappointed with myself as I had turned off moderation about 6 hours prior to the release of this message. I've just returned the list to emergency moderation to protect everyone from turn around on the spam on the UK medical message. Some of you may have already seen that a reply message from you was rejected from our server. That said (whew), YOU MUST ALWAYS BE VIGILANT in screening messages. If a message seems out of character and asking for your help, then delete it. I'm seeing more and more of these sort of (ahem) innocent postings. I don't like the option of moderating the list, but it will keep this sort of SPAM from being forwarded to our valuable members. If you think your email has sent spam, just check your sent messages to see what has recently been sent from your account. LIST PROTECTION As you may know, our list does NOT allow attachments and also does NOT allow HTML email. This means that the email sent to you from the list cannot infect your computer. HOWEVER, if you click on a link or reply to someone, we cannot be responsible for results from these sorts of actions. BE VIGILANT Do not be afraid to delete any message...you haven't won the lottery in some foreign country, your monetary donation will not save a person or the entire world, and you don't need to click a URL to see a web page with fantastic discounts on prescription drugs. A general tip-off to spam is bad grammar/spelling and sentence structure - something I hope that our list would notice in a second. MODERATION WILL CONTINUE I will likely keep moderation on for a while due to problems that I'm seeing with spam issues. I know that this delays messages and interaction with our community. You may not know, but I had to put myself on permanent moderation in the last year as someone has spoofed my email and was sending spam to the list posing as me. What that means is that when I send a message, I must also approve my own messages (welcome to my world of spam?!?!). So always, be careful and delete anything suspicious even if it is from a trusted source. If you ever need questions answered or just need advice, please do not hesitate to email me off-list. Re: [MOSAIC] Professional Book Discussions
Could we *please* not have people indicate interest to the entire list. Each I'm interested message goes out to about 3000 people. So the last few messages represent about a 10,000 email hit on the server. Imagine what might happen if you sent 10,000 emails from your personal email account. I'm putting the list on emergency moderation to prevent more drain on sever resources. Please try to answer to the *person* and *not* the entire list on this type of posting (mentioned dozens of times previous to this). Could the person that started or wants to lead this book study contact me so we can discuss how to move ahead. I don't want to kill discussion, but I do want to mitigate the limited server resources. [MOSAIC] Emergency Moderation (due to potential threat)
There have been a couple of suspicious emails sent to our list with on a strange URL. The messages do not have a subject. Do NOT click the link in the message. Just move any message without a subject to the trash. I've just put Mosaic into emergency moderation mode. What this means is that ALL messages will be moderated for the next few days. This will cause delays in delivery of posts, but is necessary while this threat is present. The messages so far have been from AOL'ers witch also leads me to suspect that the link targets some security issue with this email provider. The URL in suspect messages seems to be harmless. It will be something like a name and then a four digit number and then the extension co.cc (ex. kmack 5544 co.cc). Our list will NEVER deliver a virus to you, but we cannot prevent links being embedded in messages and then members carelessly clicking on a link. We do not allow attachments being sent to members. To review: 1. NEVER on URL's in email unless you are positive of where the link will go. 2. Be suspicious of any unsolicited message sent to you with just a URL. 3. Emails don't deliver viruses, but clicking on attachments and URL's can be dangerous. Be safe my friends. We'll probably be in emergency moderation mode for the next few days. [MOSAIC] Online Poetry Slam Project
We are in the process of finalizing the details for our annual Online Poetry Slam project. The Online Poetry Slam is sponsored by The Literacy Workshop and is a fantastic opportunity for students to post poetry online in a classroom blog and then get feedback from students in remote classrooms. Classroom teachers will control all aspects of their poetry blog and must approve all posts to the blog as well as all comments made to poems. This project is a wonderful way to get introduced to blogs and will provide you with an outlet for publishing student poetry that generates authentic peer feedback. The Online Poetry Slam will run from April through June and is flexible so that classrooms with various spring breaks and testing schedules can participate. In past projects we have seen over 1000 student poems with over 3500 comments from participating classrooms. The registration process for the online Poetry Slam is now open through April 1. The project has an emphasis on middle level classrooms, but we've had participating classrooms from grades 5-10. You can view more details on the project and take a look at past projects by visiting http://www.literacyworkshop.org/poetryslam/poetryslam.htm. [MOSAIC] Reminder on Replies (PLEASE consider others)
We seem to have hit a bit of a hot spot on messages. Right now we have over 12,000 messages waiting to be sent. While this is a good thing in one way, it creates a serious issue in other ways. Firstly, many of you are just replying blindly. This means you hit reply, type your one sentence/paragraph and then hit send. What happens is our server gets your one sentence message and then has to spend resources posting the additional 5-10 paragraphs of quoted material. This is a huge burden as a 10k message can easily become a 30k message. Additionally we are seeing 2+ digests being sent each day. If there are 50 pages in the digest, then maybe there are 2-3 pages of new content. The rest is quotes from previous messages. PLEASE, Please, please...trim your messages. If all you have to add is an Amen or I agree, then resist the urge to send this to the ENTIRE list. Send the I agree message to the individual and *not* to the 2500 members of this list. Re: [MOSAIC] not receiving any posts (Reminder NOT to post this)
I thought we might be starting up a new round of not receiving messages threads. As mentioned earlier, we are in a month or two when list traffic is diminished. This list is working just fine. Once again, please send your questions about emails or membership to me, *not* to the entire list. I generally think this drought is due to teacher preoccupation with assessments, grading, evaluations, holidays, conferences, open houses, fall fundraisers, etc. We are into a really busy time of the year for schools in general. Also, you can check the archives to see if you are not getting messages (look at the bottom of this message for the link). In the archives you would see that the last message delivered was on Oct. 15. So if you had gotten the message on Oct. 15 and none since then, it is because no messages were sent to the list. [MOSAIC] Please, More Care with Your Subjects
I noticed we had a few messages with a SPAM header yesterday: ***SPAM*** Re: K-12 reading assessment program. This has also happened in the past. Please REMOVE any spam header (***SPAM***) when replying to tagged subject. I promise it'll take less than 10 seconds and it will ensure that your message is delivered to everyone. Some members will have messages deleted by their server if ***SPAM*** is in the subject. Other people will have messages with a spam header put directly into their Trash or Spam folders and never read them. The ***SPAM*** header is something that someone's email server is adding to the subject based on a somewhat complicated scoring system. As well, we've gotten a few messages in recent weeks with no subject at all. If you are replying to a no subject message, please take the extra 10 seconds to add an appropriate subject. I know everyone will appreciate the extra seconds that you take to ensure that your subject accurately reflects your message. Re: [MOSAIC] URL Problems
In looking at the URL that I sent I'm seeing that for some reason the link may include the period as part of the URL. A period at the end of a URL that becomes part of the URL will cause it to fail. I'm not sure what causes this as I see three places where the link works fine, but then just one instance where it includes the period at the end of the link. The original link was very long and divided up into 2-3 lines. Only the first line showed the link. This required people to copy and paste the link and then copy and paste additional lines. ### http://www.reading.org/Publish.aspx?page=/publications/journals/rrq/v44/i3/ abstracts/rrq-44-3-mc keown.htmlmode=redirect ### (above is ONE URL divided up into 3 lines - it will likely fail for everyone) The lesson for all of us it to be careful when posting longs URL's. Also try not to put a period at the end of a URL as this can cause problems for people. http://sn.im/rethinkingcomp (no period - should work fine for all) http://sn.im/rethinkingcomp. (period after URL - will not work for some members) Also if a link doesn't work for you, try taking a quick look at the email and look for additional URL tidbits on additional lines. Also see if a bad URL has a period at the end of the URL. [MOSAIC] PLEASE - your help needed
I just want everyone to know that it's great to see a spark in the list traffic. We want to encourage thoughtful use of this list to improve reading and education in general. In the last couple days we are sending out well over 100,000 messages per day. With the increase in list posting we also have a few problems that I want to all members to be aware of. 1. PERSONAL RESPONSES Please do NOT post personal responses to the list. These are things like I agree, Great Idea, or any number of short, terse messages that really do not advance any conversation. If you feel a need to post this type of response, please send it to the INDIVIDUAL and not to the 2500+ members of the list. 2. TRIM REPLY Many recent posts are including the ENTIRE thread in the reply. This is unnecessary and places an additional burden on our server. Please TRIM the quoted previous material to include just the necessary information. This is just a courtesy to everyone. I've noticed this can be a problem for people using Blackberry or other handheld devices to reply. By not trimming replies you are forcing the server to do extra work and also bothering people on digest as they may receive more than one digest per day. 3. DIGEST REPLY If you receive the digest PLEASE make sure that your subject line is changed to match the content. It doesn't help our members to see a subject like Mosaic Digest, Vol 35, Issue 27. Members PLEASE help us by deleting any subject with digest such as Mosaic Digest, Vol 35, Issue 27. When you reply to a bad subject with a digest tag, PLEASE change the subject to be appropriate to content. EFFECT ON MEMBERS USING FREE EMAIL ACCOUNTS (Yahoo, etc) The increase in list traffic also has an affect on members using free emails accounts - specifically Yahoo. When traffic increases, free email providers decide that we are sending out SPAM and then block our messages. This morning 50+ Yahoo members were tagged for bounces (meaning messages were not being delivered to them). This is NOT our problem, but an issue with free email providers and how they do business. Just be aware that when you send a Great Idea reply this also can create issues for other members. So please help Mosaic by using the list to advance the conversation by not posting terse personal replies. I'm just asking everyone to use some additional care on replying and creating messages. It's great to see the exchange of ideas, but PLEASE try to ensure that you are ADVANCING the conversation. If you have a personal message PLEASE send the message to the individual and not to the entire list. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciate by all. [MOSAIC] Please stop me too on Weekly Study thread
Please, please do not send any more me too, or include me messages on the weekly study idea. My guess is that we've sent out over 40,000 individual messages with this in the body. This puts a tremendous burden on the server and really doesn't really help us to organize much. If the me-to's continue we'll need to moderate the list until this dies down. So please, always remember to be careful to think a bit before replying with just a few words. I'm not sure if anyone has volunteered time to help organize and then moderate this group. If there is a person or two interested, please contact me (km...@literacyworkshop.org) or Jennifer (cnjpal...@aol.com). Jennifer and I have already exchanged some ideas on this and are willing to work with a leadership team to get this organized. Once done we can share details with Mosaic and how to get involved. [MOSAIC] List Etiquette
I'd like to take a moment and remind everyone that Mosaic is a very large list - over 2000 people. We've had a number of things happen recently so I thought it a good time to review some basic list etiquette. 1. CONTACT THE PERSON NOT THE ENTIRE LIST When having a side conversation or request for materials don't send out a message to over 2000 people. Contact the INDIVIDUAL. This also applies to thank-you's, me too, I agree, and other personal questions/requests. The individual's email address is in the email header - contact the individual off-list. ***If you have material to share and would like to have it posted on the Mosaic website, please contact me off-list and I will work with you to post the resources on the website. 2. DELETE OR EDIT PREVIOUS CONTENT Think Green with your words! When replying, please DELETE all of previous post OR EDIT previous post to a bare minimum of words that relate to your reply. We also have messages rejected by the server because they are so long. Mostly this is a problem for people who read the digest. They have to scroll through pages and pages of quoted material. 3. No Subject or Mosaic Digest Subject We've all send messages without subjects. If you are replying to a no subject or generic digest subject, please change the subject to fit the content of the message. The same is true when a thread changes from one topic to another topic. Please make sure the subject relates to the content. Thanks to everyone for continued cooperation in list etiquette. [MOSAIC] Last Call to Join the Poetry Slam Project
http://www.literacyworkshop.org/poetryslam/poetryjoin.htm This is a final shout out to anyone interested in joining this year's Online Poetry Slam. The URL above will take you to the registration page. The Poetry Slam is focused on middle grade classrooms and will take place throughout April and May. Each participating classroom will have a teacher-moderated blog where students will post and comment on student poetry. Registration will close at end of the day on Monday, March 16. [MOSAIC] Poety Slam Online Project Opportunity
The Online Poetry Slam will run from March through June and is flexible so that classrooms with various spring breaks and testing schedules can participate. In past projects we averaged about 500 student poems with over 2400 comments from participating classrooms. The registration process for the online Poetry Slam will begin on March 1. The project has an emphasis on middle level classrooms, but we've had participating classrooms from grades 5-10. You can view more details on the project by visiting http://www.literacyworkshop.org/poetryslam. Please contact me if you require additional information. Re: [MOSAIC] a new day (please drop this thread)
I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone on the list that it is not appropriate to post political pleas or messages on this list. These types of messages are not in keeping with the purpose of this list and can take us into highly charged waters. While the intent of the message seemed innocent enough, what's to stop another member from posting a plea to get signatures on another cabinet position or asking members to support or contribute to someone's campaign? Please let this thread drop now. If you have a question about the issue contact Bev off-list or take 30 seconds to Google the person's name and the word petition and you'll get the link. We just want everyone to know that the Mosaic List is NOT going to be changing format and delivery options any time soon. Our goal is to continue to offer our members a way to connect and share ideas about literature in a list format. This thread was initially a member's invitation to explore Web 2.0 possibilities and offer people on this list a chance to connect online to share and explore new tools including things like blogs and social networking. We encourage those of you interested in Web 2.0 to continue to share ideas on how you use this to support literacy and learning in your classroom. Re: [MOSAIC] Keith, I'm not getting all messages
There may be a number of people on Mosaic that have trouble receiving all the messages. The reason is often due to the fact that we have to send out emails in batches. I'd compare this to getting kids home from school. If every kid at a very large school had to be in a separate car, the traffic system would be snared in gridlock. However, if you batch the kids into busses depending on their destination, you save resources and traffic moves. Think of our Mosaic members as the students and the busses being batches of messages to a group of our members. What typically causes problems is that some batches are held up. This is generally due to Yahoo (95%) or school servers (4.5%) with issues. If your message happens to be in a batch that has a problem then the whole batch isn't delivered. This is like a bus system that has to wait until the first passenger is unloaded before it can move onto the next passenger's location. These undelivered batches get put into the mail queue and the system tries to deliver them every hour or two. That being the case, you can sometimes see a message from a later batch that is delivered while an earlier batch sits in the mail queue. There are dozens of other variables that impact service that I won't go into at this time. Mostly our problems are with Yahoo and there are probably several hundred people using Yahoo email. So, a considerable portion of Mosaic members that are in Yahoo batches are impacted. Sometimes I'll see a batch go through to Yahoo and then the next time that same batch get refused due to user complaints. Today, we have three school servers that are refusing our messages or not responding. Usually I ignore these for a day thinking that they'll get the problem worked out. After 48 hours (or on weekends) I'll typically disable anyone from that school so later batches can move through the system. It's an imperfect system trying to balance system resources with demand (and there is a lot of need from Mosaic - 1700+ members). I've tried going with smaller batches, but this has had a severe impact on system resources. Re: [MOSAIC] (Mosaic) Book review
My mailbox is filled with people asking how to be involved. We will post a link to the application form next week (mentioned twice in my earlier post). The purpose of sending out the notice was for interested people to check out the available books ahead of time. I also wanted to alert everyone that I would send out the URL for the application form later next week. The application page (available later next week) will also include notice of a selection process. We have about 60 people apply last time, but could only select a total of 8 reviewers. So look for the URL for applying next week. We'll keep the application page open for about a week and also remind the group before we close the form. Thanks, Keith Mack Web Administrator for Mosaic List ***I will send out a link to the application page next week...I promise. ;-) ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Re: [MOSAIC] confusion
There are several reasons emails don't post, but the most common is that messages are too big. More on this on the archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/mosaic@literacyworkshop.org/msg03691.html. Just a reminder that should send your individual questions about not getting or seeing emails to me. I'm in the process of moving and so only checking things about once a day so if you see a message held if might be a day before I can get to it. As for why you are seeing only some messages, I can only guess that this is likely a local problem. We don't have an excessive number of posts in queue. Thanks, Keith Mack [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.literacyworkshop.org -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Linda Crumrine Sent: Wednesday, May 21, 2008 4:21 AM To: Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org Subject: [MOSAIC] confusion Hi, I am confused and am unsure what I am doing incorrectly. Re: [MOSAIC] digest burden
Most people on digest are getting Plain Text which is often cumbersome for a variety of reasons. There are two additional possibilities: MIME and RSS FEED. PLAIN TEXT (one text message with all posts contained) When you sign up for digest you are put on PLAIN TEXT because it is the most compatible format. This bundles all the day's messages into one text message. No HTML formatting so the only links will be URL's. MIME (sends messages as attachments) This still comes as a single daily message, but instead of have each posting listed sequentially in a single, long message, an index message comes, listing each of the daily postings, and each posting comes as an attachment. The MIME form of the digest can be easier to read but requires the reader to open individual attachments (this can be confusing). You can try the MIME version by changing your settings at http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/listinfo/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. RSS FEED (another form of subscription) http://www.mail-archive.com/mosaic@literacyworkshop.org/maillist.xml The link above will take you to the RSS feed for this list. It's basically just a list of recent messages. Think of it like a newspaper where everyday you get the articles from the list. If you click on the Subscribe link, it will put a bookmark in your browser so you can easily return to the site. Some people use an RSS service to list all of their subscriptions because it offers a lot of options (these are usually free). I use http://www.newsgator.com. ARCHIVES http://snipurl.com/MosaicArchive A link to the archives is at the end of every message. Of all the choices this might be the cleanest way to view the list traffic. You can search the list and also sort by date or by thread. If you haven't every visited the archives, I encourage you to take a look at it as an alternative wading through a long digest. Keith Mack Web Administrator for Mosaic List -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of PJK Sent: Sunday, May 04, 2008 8:07 PM My suggested solution, if possible - can the topic lists at the beginning include a link that brings you right to that message and then a back to top button? ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. [MOSAIC] Yahoo email problems
This message is to those of you using Yahoo email addresses (should you ever get this message). Please be advised that we are experiencing a major problem with Yahoo servers over the last few weeks. I have spent hours and hours trying to work with their customer service, but have exhausted all options. In the last few weeks we have been getting consistent errors due to user complaints: SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection: Messages temporarily deferred due to user complaints In my recent experience the word temporarily means permanently. I've had to delete dozens of Mosaic messages hung up in queue for over 48 hours. At this point I have decided to end efforts to try to resolve the conflict. If you are a list member using Yahoo, please consider using another free service (such as GMail) that is not banning messages from our server. Re: [MOSAIC] Listserv - Digest
The software that we use for the list is called MailMan. It is one of the standards for lists as it is installed on a high percentage of servers and is open source (free). Unfortunately it is not customizable on my end without a lot of code hacking. I know that there are limitations with both the digest options we can offer, but there's nothing that I can do to improve that. As mentioned earlier today, those of you experiencing pain and suffering with the Plain Text Digest should try out the Mime Digest to see if it is a better fit for your needs. To make this change go to: http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/listinfo/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Thanks, Keith Mack Web Administrator for Mosaic List -Original Message- Sent: Monday, May 05, 2008 5:19 PM Although the list of topics at the head of the digest is numbered, the posts themselves are not. Is it possible to match the numbers to the messages? Thanks, again. Re: [MOSAIC] Off Topic Math discussion - Closing
I was working today and just returned to my home office. I was blown away by all the interest in the Math thread - over 20 posts in ~12 hours. I was doubly glad to see Jennifer chime in (as she should have) about staying true to the list mission. I know that there were great info and ideas on the math topic, but my experience is that we have to be really careful when going on bird walks. A short one is no big deal, but any that generate huge interest could snowball into a permanent math niche. Then if we allow Math, what's to stop science, music, art, politics (gasp!), etc.? The off topic posts become a HUGE BURDEN to our members on digest as they have to wade through the messages one at a time with no sorting ability. Obviously you can tell I'm with Jennifer and Ginger with the idea that this list stay true to its mission. You can read more about the group mission at: http://readinglady.com/mosaic/. If there's interest, I can certainly create a separate list for those of you wanting to form a Math Group or a book talk (as mentioned), or even a General Elementary or Self Contained that is open to all topics. Please contact me off list if you want to set something like this up. So I urge you to please let the Math topic die away. I'm sure we'll see a bunch more posts as people come back to check email Sunday or Monday. [MOSAIC] MP3 books/lit free
http://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/ The Lit2Go site is developed by a Florida educational consortium and has a growing collection of free MP3 audio recordings of books from classics for nursery rhymes. Books are linked to standards and some also come with activities. Lit2Go is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. You can: *Download the files to your Mp3 player and listen on the go, *Listen to the Mp3 files on your computer, *View the text on a webpage and read along as you listen, *Print out the stories and poems to make your own book. Wow - you can even search the database of files by reading level. Most of the selections are obviously in the public domain, but they promise to be continually adding to the collection.
