Re: [Audyssey] Toc observation
Well, this isn't a genre I've seen much of to be honest, because most of my friends were and are rpg and action/adventure fans, and I've never been able to read all the necessary text to play such things myself even when I found the maps visible, so this is deffinately a new experience for me. I can certainly see how this system could progress into various games, everything from civilization to command and conquer or even themed stratogy games like dune 2. Breware the Grue! I too came from a mainstream sighted gaming background and that's why GMA Games impressed me right off. David has been at the forefront of accessible gaming technology creating the first first person shooter similar to Doom, and now Time of Conflict that is something on par with Civilization. Both types could have been improved some, but are monumental steps forward in what can be done using only audio and a speech interface. I have nothing but respect for David Greenwood's achievements so far as advancing audio games to new areas and styles that have never really been explored before in an audio only format. My hats off to David for giving us this excellent product. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. thats a point phill if both can be supported and then have it autoswitch or have an option in a menu to switch if the system finds both, in my system for example where I have all the libs for just about everything that needs to exist I'd like that. Re: [Audyssey] DirectSound or XAudio
hmmm well we already need dotnet for most things and directx is not to bad I upgrade every so often anyway. xna can be put into the installers its small as. I already run entombed. Ok so the down side? dotnet stuff in general and xna stuff takes some time to load although you have the advantage of incription on sounds entombed for example has their music in wma and their sounds in xsb and xnb sound banks which I can't open. on the other hand most don't have the hardware and so direct sound8 is ok though most will need dx9c anyway for games in general. I don't care any way. Even though I don't have it I'd prefur that you had the support in case I upgrade my hardware or just for room. I hate games where they will only run on sertain systems. Right now for example one friend has a load of old games that don't support hd video. they work but things stutter and systems reset and things go bonkas and so every few days a reformat is needed, because some games don't run with the hardware well. Even if you had a detection for that support in there maybe even an option to select the sound support. I have good headsets I wander if I could run full 3d like they do in shades of doom. in fact I may switch to that effect just to see. unfortunately my hd card realtech does not have the full mutherload of memmory the standard one has so i can't take advantage of its effects but I feel like a bit of dooming now you mention it. Re: [Audyssey] Major Problem!
Good grief sean! what is it with you and reformats? or do you just have a liking for death threats against computer ;D. Personally, I think I've only ever reformatted a machine once, and that only when it was being given to someone else to use. i've occasionally ran into user account shinanigans, but at most these just mean deleting one account and creating another, not reformatting at all. Generally i've found a good antivirus and occasional use of utilities like C cleaner have kept my machine running without a hitch, in fact mostly I've only ever changed machines when the hardware actually broke down, as happened with my old desktop in august of 2008, though it had been used pretty extensively every day for was 4 years, so I didn't mind too much (all my important stuff is backed up on an external harddrive anyway, --- -sinse if I lost my thesis I'd be in pretty serious trouble, not to mention having lots of games, books and music I want to keep as well). [Audyssey] sims was Toc observation
I must confess I've never really seen the point of such games myself, I can see the point in something strategical such as sim city, but things like the sims have always struck me as basically a glorified tamagochi. In terms of audio interface, well there are already textual versions of such things (check out the alter ego game at http://www.theblackforge.net/ for instance, and there are probably others).. I suppose something with audio events and acting could be created, though as I said I must admit I've not really ever seen the point in such things myself, I suppose though I've always been a bit more hard core in my gaming and wanted more exploration personally. Of course, this isn't to say it's a bad idea, just a concept i've never really found personally interesting, --- but that of course is just me. Beware the grue! I remember we bought a Game Cube version of the game for my mom a few years back. It was quite funny since if you didn't do things exactly right the character would get depressed and fall asleep at odd hours of the day and things like that. Re: [Audyssey] DirectSound or XAudio
Hi Thomas, My vote goes to DirectSound. All cons considered it is rock solid, and it's been tried and tested for 10 years. XAudio2 is the future, certainly, but not quite yet in my mind. Eventually I intend making Streemway support both DirectSound and XAudio2 and adjust itself depending on Windows version, and since Streemway has a wrapper API I don't need to modify my own games to integrate this; just Streemway itself. Kind regards, Philip Bennefall - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Monday, March 22, 2010 7:01 AM Subject: [Audyssey] DirectSound or XAudio Hi all, As most of you know I've spent the last three or four months converting my engine code from C# .NET to C++. At last after three/four months of hard work the engine is almost ready to begin using for building Mysteries of the Ancients beta 11. The one area of the engine I haven't quite completed though is the sound core. Initially I was using FMOD Ex 4.28, which is fine, but as you may know that requires a special license to use in commercial products. When incorperated into a game engine the license costs a lot more. I really don't have the money right now to pay for the license so I've been thinking about using DirectSound 8 or XAudio2.What I'm looking for is some educated advice which I should use for my engine. On one hand I know DirectSound 8 is old, is now technically moved to the legacy branch of DirectX, but it also is quite stable and very backwards compatible with older Windows releases. Plus Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 all come with it installed so no need to upgrade DirectX to use it. Thus if I go with DirectSound 8 I don't have to install anything extra, or ask anyone to upgrade DirectX. All of these things are compelling reasons for choosing DirectSound 8. On the other hand XAudio2 looks very promising. For one thing it is a lot newer, is designed for Windows releases beyond Windows 7, and is currently being supported by Microsoft. This means going with it now will save me some trouble upgrading my games when the time comes that DirectSound is officially removed from DirectX altogether, but nobody knows when that will be.Too many games and other multimedia products depend on DirectSound to just up and drop it as Microsoft well knows. They probably won't drop it completely until XAudio2 has fully replaced DirectSound for newer games and other multimedia products. So the fact that XAudio2 is current doesn't necessarily mean DirectSound is a bad option. It just means my games will be more up to date so to speak. However, as i said before there are some features that make it promising. For one thing I see according to the docs you can play and stream some compressed file types like wma and xwma. This is obviously a great feature as some music and ambience tracks can be quite big. Having support for some compressed file types makes it a good choice in that regard. Besides that XAudio2 has some improvements in DSP support and can be used to mix sounds for 5.1 and 7.1 sound cards which is very good since the fact we depend on an entire audio environment to begin with. The more realistic sounding the mixer is the more realistic the game's audio environment will be. However, even though a game may support such a high tech sound environment most of my customers are likely to be stuck with some budget sound card like a Soundmax AC-97 that shipped with their computer. So I'm not really certain that putting extra work into specifically supporting 5.1 or 7.1 mixing will do them a whole heck of a lot of good without the higher end hardware. If this is the case then Xaudio2 3d mixing won't be much better than DirectSound's 3d mixing if they don't have the equipment to take advantage of the better 3d mixing. Any thoughts here? Has anyone actually sat down and compared these two APIs and have a better list of pros and cons? More to the point which do you think I should pick? Re: [Audyssey] Toc observation
Hi Dark, Oh, I agree with this completely. Re: [Audyssey] Toc observation
hmmm well its good we are getting close to the sighted game in this way. ofcause if we get close enough if we put graphics in the game but used the same system then that would be good. we would have to have a way of turning speech off though. on that note if david or anyone wants me to do full voice overs for things then it probably could be done some what. Ofcause any city names that were not standard things would have to be done by sapi but the rest looks semi fixed. aah. I always like to stay up to date. I have a realtech hd card but am not impressed with the stripped down card on my laptop. sure it is sounding real good for what it is but in games like sod I have to set everything off the card because it doesn't run everything well. In one part of teraformas sounds don't work well at all. I suspect that my card has reduced internal memmory. I have been brought up on yamaha, sb16 and other such cards. A basic card for me that looks good could be the soundmax, no fx but a built in eq makes up for that the realtech hd and the realtech ac97 are ok cards. I've heard about m audio, but hmmm. Its not like I can go fully pro though I am happy with the lack of buzz and hiss on my end. Still like the analog cards as they seem to run smoother. but enough of this I think. Re: [Audyssey] Toc observation
It'd be interesting to see if a game like The Sims could be created, where rather than building a city you create an individual character and try to build a life for that character with house, job and things like that. I remember we bought a Game Cube version of the game for my mom a few years back. It was quite funny since if you didn't do things exactly right the character would get depressed and fall asleep at odd hours of the day and things like that. I always try to reserve the slingshot for bears but it always seemed like other enemies kept getting in the way. And of course it didn't help that I blew a major opportunity when I happened to get really lucky with a FOrtune Field early on and got up to almost 500 strength. But instead of leaving well enough alone I had to keep trying. Let's just say Q9 became extremely suicidal LOL. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? They now can be set to moving randomly or roaming. These modes allow them to fuel automatically and continue their flight with no intervention or chance of running out of fuel. They are very important against enemy ships, especially subs and battleships. Try the battle of Britain map and I am sure you will change your mind. I admit that they are only marginally useful in land-only battles, but if you want to quickly focus defense or offense on distant locations, fighters are the only way to fly. Also, by setting flight paths from city to city or carrier, you don't need to baby sit them at all. In your current mission with 25 fighters, the next time you land a major attack against an enemy stronghold, bring in all of your fighters. You will have probably cleaned out the enemy's defenses with that kind of power. Come to think of it, I have more fun with fighters than any other unit. Re: [Audyssey] time of conflict thoughts and questions
Hi david. I must admit working out solutions of how to show certain information in audio has been rather a pet project of mine even though I'm not a programmer, but t a map with hundreds of pieces has always thrown me as well, hence why I'm so impressed with the solution used in Toc, and how workable it is. As to units, I know you can leave armour to bombard things in a city as defense, but I wasn't certain how helpful it would be to leave units such as infantry within cities in general. The principle reason I was thinking of more units, is that currently, if you and the enemy are on the same land mass, I've generally found the ships much less helpful, and found it better to produce armour fighters and infantry instead. while battleships are useful, they take so much time to produce, you can't really create them in time unless you have a city a long way away from the enemy which you can guarantee won't be attacked, ie, one on a separate island. Thus, apart from an actual sea battle where you and the enemy always have completely separate islands, giving you time to develope a battleship, I've found the marine units only really useful in a sea battle map, hence my desire for more land units to play with, glad to here some are in the works though. I also admit I find the lack of offensive aircraft slightly confusing in the game, sinse from the second world war onwards, as well as fighter planes, aircraft have been used to strafe enemy positions and disrupt enemy offense, and a basic set of enemy troops without anti aircraft artiliary couldn't really do much about them. While I can understand that having the fighter be able to attack enemy cities and have a huge advantage over enemy infantry would make the game unbalanced, it does seem odd this aspect of airial warfare isn't represented, hence why I'd rather like to see a short range, but high offense bomber in the game, which would also make aircraft carriers more useful and important as bases for offensives, sinse currently I've not really found them useful sinse mainly I've found fighters more useful as scouts than as offense, and the ability to disgrup enemy offensive with aircraft more successfully would be nice. Beware the grue! Dark. - Original Message - From: "David Greenwood" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, March 21, 2010 10:54 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] time of conflict thoughts and questions Hello Dark, The beta team came up with two more land-based units: artillery and armoured personnel transport. Due to the recommendations coming late in the testing, it was decided to wait until the multi-player version was released to include these. Instead we gave armour most of the benefits that artillery would have such as the ability to bombard cities and sea-based units. You can currently fortify your cities by either maintaining several infantry or armoured units within a city, or keeping a battleship their as protection. Personally, I don't think of battles being either land or sea-based, since to win anything other than a complete land battle, both types of units are required to work together. Armour can bombard passing ships, battleships can bombard land-based units, troop transports carry land-based units from land to land, armour and infantry can be drowned at sea, ships are built on land, and fighter aircraft can travel over either land or sea. I am happy to see you understood that you do not need any great spacial or map reading abilities. The problem for some people new to TOC is that they feel they need to understand everything about the lay of the land, and for the most part, you really don't need to. A few weeks ago I was playing a game and near the end I realized that for the entire game I had a completely wrong view of the map in my mind, but since you command units by distance and access, it didn't really matter--I won anyway. Many years ago, someone challenged me with a game idea. That is to produce a game for the blind where you need to control hundreds of pieces over a huge map. At the time, I thought it was nearly impossible, but the idea sat there waiting for a solution. Over a year ago it came to me how this could be done, and that is when TOC was conceived. You use the plus or minus keys, in other words Shift+Dash and Dash. I don't know if the Plus and Minus keys ont he mumber pad would work (I have a laptop), but it's possible. The plus key will add one skill point to the highlighted skill and the Minus key will subtract it, provided of course that you don't hit Confirm Skill Point changes. Once you hit Confirm the change is permanent. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? Vender: No pizza. Hi Shaun, I'm not really sure what sound cards are currently on top. Despite what I've said about Creative going down hill I know the Creative Labs Audigy 4 Pro is a pretty good sound card for games and music, and does have a lot of good reviews. In terms of other brands I've heard Asus has some good high-def sound cards, but have not any experience with them. Re: [Audyssey] time of conflict thoughts and questions
Hello Johnny, Have you looked at fighters recently? They take awhile to build, take more managing than the rest, and they don't really do much cept for getting shot down all the time lol. Granted they're nice to scout with, but even then, if you don't keep them near your cities, they go bye-bye either by out of fuel or by enemy hands. The game does have a learning curve, though imho this wasn't a bad thing (indeed quite the opposite), but I've now been able to defeat the computer on the 2nd skillevel on a battle sized map, -- which is actually an improvement from my slaughterings yesterday! I must say, I'm deeply impressed with the game, particularly with the interface and flexibility of overview and controls. As I've said before, my spacial perception is pretty pathetic, I'm distinctly not the best person at overviewing and managing many objects positions in a large area from audio information alone. i even find sudoku and solitare difficult to play. However, as with audio 3D I find the interface in Toc gives so many ways of finding information, it's entirely playable and perceiveable, I particularly love the context sensative lists! it doesn't matter if I forget where my infantry are, or have them roaming around somewhere, sinse I can just go to where I want them, hit alt I, and get a menue listing distance. Thus far, naval warfare is great, but the land and air opperations imho could bennifit from a few more strategical units to play with. As to what, --- well I was wondering about perhaps defensive artiliary (say alt u), which could move at only one square per turn, would need to be set down for a turn before attacking, but could bombard things most successfully (especially enemy fighters and ships), and bombers (alt V), heavier and slower planes which could bombard the enemy, but had a very limited movement capacity, perhaps only able to move 3 spaces a turn, and have a fuel capacity of 12 or even 10, thus making it necessary to have an air craft carrier as base. Other units such as transport planes heavy armour or light infantry, orr maybe the ability to fortify cities could be added as well, really it just depends upon what would balance best, but I really would like to see land battles made as interesting and complex as sea ones are currently, pluss of course fortifications and other defensive measures could be interesting as

Re: [Audyssey] time of conflict thoughts and questions
The only part of the game I find really annoying thus far is the fighter unit. They take awhile to build, take more managing than the rest, and they don't really do much cept for getting shot down all the time lol. Granted they're nice to scout with, but even then, if you don't keep them near your cities, they go bye-bye either by out of fuel or by enemy hands. My current game got like 20 fighters on my side, and most I do with them is to keep them out of the ways of others. "No one ever kicked ass by saying I can't." Other units such as transport planes heavy armour or light infantry, orr maybe the ability to fortify cities could be added as well, really it just depends upon what would balance best, but I really would like to see land battles made as interesting and complex as sea ones are currently, pluss of course fortifications and other defensive measures could be interesting as well. Whether other units get added or not, I'm certainly deeply impressed with the game thus far, both for it's complexity, and especially for it's great overview system, and i'll very likely be buying it when it's out. Re: [Audyssey] time of conflict thoughts and questions
Hello Dark, The beta team came up with two more land-based units: artillery and armoured personnel transport. And seeing as how this wasn't even Thomas' project to begin with and the amount of trouble it's brought down on him in the four years he's been working on it it's definitely understandable why he just wants to get it out the door. But now that I think of it I don't think Thomas ever intended to use real human speech beyond what was necessary for Angela herself. I tend to agree that real human speech is more pleasing to hear, but I can't honestly say that I'll be able to do that when I start working on games. Sometimes it's not even a matter of being willing or unwilling but what you can and can't actually afford. Like I said, professional voice talent is hardly inexpensive so sometimes some people literally can't afford the extra money, even if they would prefer to use human speech. I feel, however, that the chances of a purchase increase with every little detail of quality featured in the game - especially that of the main output voice, as that is what the user will hear possibly for hours on end. My filosophy is this, rather spend a little extra and get everything as good as it can possibly be as you then stand out above the rest, and are thus likely to get more sales in the end. The lady who does the actual Angela sound clips charged a considerable amount just for doing those clips. It would cost even more for actual speech of the sort you're thinking of. I agree it would sound more esthetically pleasing but it may not be financially feasible unless it could be absolutely guaranteed that Thomas would get his money's worth. And in our market that's not a guarantee. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? Vender: No pizza. I appreciate the convenience of using synthetic speech while the game is in intensive development (e.g. when you have a million things changing from day to day), but in my mind you make a much more professional impression on your end users if you use an actual voice talent in the final product. Since you are using concatenated audio files anyway, this would not be a difficult thing to do as it would just be a matter of replacing the tts version of each file with the real woman's voice. To me, this gives the game a much nicer atmosphere and an over-all nicer feel, as I personally tend to get rather irritated with the little glitches that are inevitably going to be present in every concatenated tts voice. When I say concatenated in this case I do not mean your game sound files but rather the way that the actual voice is constructed, there are hundreds of little chunks that they try to fit together to form the particular phrase in question and these engines are far from perfect. A real lady would be able to emphasise her words so that you really feel for what she is saying and can put it in teh context of the game so to speak, rather than the dry and unemotional tts voice equivalent. I guess what I'm trying to say is, in a game where the text is so dynamic so that a real human voice would be impossible such as Entombed I can put up with tts, but in a game like Mota I think it would be highly benefitial for the end product to use an actual voiceover artist. Again, you would only do these recordings when you feel that it's not very likely that the general set of words and phrases will change much. As an example, imagine Q9 with NeoSpeech Paul? Re: [Audyssey] question about Ken's Dreamtech site?
Hi, Sounds great. I'm looking forward to those. Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Ken Sent: Sunday, March 21, 2010 1:17 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] question about Ken's Dreamtech site? Hey all, it's nice to see some love for my games yet. I am working to get a web host, but with two kids and not working it's a bit tough. My Pac Mate source code, scripts, graphics files and stuff are on Braillesoft, but I don't have a place to put the other games. I don't even have the source code to World of Darkness or Wrecking ball anymore, let alone the Little Lost Puppy, and that is a real bummer, cuz I wanted to port Wrecking ball to the Pac mate. Anyway, as well as the Quake mod I'm working on, I'm in the middle of making three games: Phrase Madness: Match the beginnings of phrases with their endings. It has a TV game show feel to it, with me playing the part of a sometimes rude but mostly funny host. With over 200 phrases, there are literally thousands of possible combinations, and if you make a funny, the host will comment. For example, "blind as a" from the beginning. You know the end is bat, but say you end up selecting the ending of "apple of my eye." You get "Blind as a eye," and the host laughing, saying he likes the concept but it's poor grammar. Some very adult combinations have come up, but instead of commenting I'll leave those to your imagination. Space Attack is a Space Invaders clone. It is unlike any other game of its kind for the blind, because all 72 ships come at you--all at once, which means you get to choose which to shoot and when. Three shields protect you from enemy fire, but their guns weaken the shield, meaning that you can't habitually use the same one over and over--or the shield blows up and you're toast. At the store, you can buy upgrades to the shields, which give them more strength. You can upgrade your gun as well, either by making it shoot faster, making it able to shoot more than the original number of rounds before the battery has to recharge, or by making your gun bigger and able to target multiple columns. You can shoot UFO's for more points, and, if you have enough points and feel risky, gamble with them to try earning more. The more points you score, the more you can buy or gamble. A driving song makes it complete--the perfect game to play on your PC or your Pac Mate or other PDA. I'm also working on a new bubble breaking game with more features than any other of its kind. It's called grynns, and You'll even be able to play sighted friends when it's done. It has the traditional modes, like in Jawbreaker--normal, shifter, mega shift. It also has other, new modes you won't find anywhere else. When you select a color, the smiling face painted on it turns to an open mouth, and it sings the color in a specified pitch. Once you learn the pitches, you can hear what colors are added by the pitches of dinging chimes, which are panned appropriately to give an idea where the new face appears. Each of these games will sell for $10 per game--that is , $10 for the PC version or $10 for the PDA version. If you want both, they will be purchaseable for $15. If you want a pack with all the games, it can be had for $35. These games are still in development, but each is over halfway done. Do you live near Sandusky Ohio, or are you planning a trip to Cedar Point? Receive a massage at very competitive rates--$40 per hour for a revitalizing therapeutic massage, $65 per house call--any time, anywhere (within reason.) Call 419-577-7973 I'll ease your pain and discomfort, loosen and mobilize your stiff joints, relax your achy muscles, and help you let go of stress, depression, and nervous anxiety... [Audyssey] world of darkness registering?
First I'd like to thank shaun for this upload. Second. Well, I tried world of darkness and I thought it'd be registered but I got to the point where I found it wasn't. I know the game has been released as freeware, and there probably is a way to register it. So, my question is how would I go about registering? or did shaun upload the demo installer without some internal modifications that were required? - Peter Mahach piterm...@gmail.com msn: pitermac...@hotmail.com skype (not very often): pitermach twitter: http://www.twitter.com/pitermach webpage: http://pmsworld.tmantv.net __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4961 (20100320) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
