No offense Dave, but it seems like this should be made available to all

Request for Enhancement (RFE) community discussion at BMC UserWorld - open invitation

2006-08-25 Thread Easter, David
Hello, ARSListers;

How would you like to have a greater influence on new features and
functionality in AR System and ITSM applications?

My name is David J. Easter and I'm a Product Manager with BMC Remedy.
I am hosting a Thursday lunch discussion at BMC UserWorld of the current
Request For Enhancement (RFE) process for BMC Remedy enhancement
requests. My goal for the meeting is to:

- Educate attendees on the current RFE process
  - This includes both how customers see the process and a glimpse into
the internal processing
- Give some tips when submitting an RFE that will increase the chances
of your enhancement being implemented
- Brainstorm ways the community could better define, prioritize and
manage the flow of RFEs into BMC Remedy

The meeting will be on Thursday, 8/31. It will be in the Sutter Room on
the 6th floor of the hotel and will begin at 12:00pm. Lunch will be
provided (sandwich buffet). The room will hold 30 people comfortably,
so come early if you want to ensure you get a seat. (Others will not be
turned away - but it may be Standing Room Only.)

This meeting is a "grass roots" effort by me to encourage more
participation of the community in the general RFE process. However,
solid suggestions that come out of this meeting will be folded into the
official process if appropriate.

Please come by if you have the time and desire. I look forward to
meeting you all!

Need help with `! Filter in Help Desk Out of the Box 6.0

2006-08-25 Thread Jase Brandon
**

Hello fellow
listers
Help Desk 6.0 Out of
the Box
Arserver
6.3

How can I overcome
th `! functionality of the out of the box SLA filters?

Desired result
is a column on the Requester Console that will be 'SLA_Due_Date', so that when
users log in to the requestor console they will see at a glance how much time
they have until their ticket passes SLA.

With that being
said,
I added a new date/time field on SHR:Consolidated List
called SLA_Date_Due so the filter would have a field to push the data
into.
I wrote a filter that executes on submit,
to do a push fields on SLA_Due_Date from SLA:Measurement to
SHR:ConsolidatedList.
This way the table
field on the requester console that uses SHR:Consolidated List would display the
SLA_Due_Date.

I  discovered
that the out of the box SLA filters use the `! functionality and I
can't get anything to work on submit, after
submit, etc.

I have also tried
adding a date/time field on SLA:Measurement and an active link with an execute
on "after submit", qualification if "Request ID != $NULL$, then it does a
set fields to my newly added date/time field. This link fails every time as if
no request id exists, but I go to the record and there it
is.

Then
next, if date/time field != NULL,  filter does a
push fields from SLA:Measurement to SHR:Consolidated.
This doesn't work
either because the first active link is failing.

I can't figure out
how to do a push fields from the SLA:Measurement Form up to the
SHR:ConsolidatedList form because I can't tell when the SLA:Measurement record
is being created, I do see that it's using the `! functionality. Tried removing
the `! from the name and that didn't affect anything either.

I can't get an
active link or filter to work on this form on a submit or an after submit, it's
like it doesn't do either one, but when I go to the form, there is the
record
.

Only when I manually
go in and touch the SLA:Measuement record and the object is set for
modify, it works perfectly, set fields, then push fields,
then
new field
pops up on the table field column everytime. Just as expected.

The bottom line,
(sorry it took so long),
I can't get an active link or filter to work on
this form on a submit or an after submit. It will work on a modify if
I dirty up the record.
It's like it doesn't do either one, but when I
go to the form, there is the record, so it had to be submitted at some point,
right?

Somebody please tell me
I am not crazy, I have spent the better part of two days banging my head on this
one.

Fred,
Everything matched what you said.  Just
for kicks, I deleted the association and recreated it.  Still get
the error.

Brian,
The Default Form View is blank, so I
don't think that's it.  Plus, this window pops up before the User
tool shows any evidence of having started (no login screen or anything).

And I was wrong on the text of the error
message.  It reads "Not a Valid File." (vs. "Invalid
File").  Not sure it matters, but just in case.  I've opened
the file up in Notepad, and there's no visibly odd characters in it.  Re-install
of the user tool doesn't help.

Thanks for the help.

but no such luck.  We have a few users (very few) that when they double
click on an ARTask file, get a window that just says "Invalid File".
It appears to be PC related, but I haven't a clue what to look for.
The exact same file works on different PC's (all Window's XP sp2).

Any idea what to look for?

There WAS a ARGetListEntry API call to the AR User Preferences form for
every user login that opens a display only form. So infact unknowingly
the Preferences Server eats licenses. Chomp, Chomp.

We deleted the AR User Preferences form and then the same login attempt
as before opening a display-only form gives the expected Floating(Read)

I totally understand the desire for Remedy to create products that encourage us
to buy more licenses.

Yes, This is what I've always thought. I would expect a floating read first.
But that did not happen.

In answer to other questions. The dialog has no active links, no menus, we open
the display-only form in Submit mode. We even tried submitter mode locked and
there was no difference.

Here's the actual user.log

  /* Fri Aug 25 2006 10:25:20.9211 */  FLOAT  GRANT WRITETest   (1

  /* Fri Aug 25 2006 10:25:51.5725 */  FLOAT  GRANT WRITETest2   (3

  /* Fri Aug 25 2006 10:26:08.0219 */  FLOAT  GRANT WRITETest3   (4

  /* Fri Aug 25 2006 10:26:20.0821 */  FLOAT  GRANT WRITETest4   (5

  /* Fri Aug 25 2006 10:26:31.8456 */  FLOAT  NO WRITE FREE  Test5

I'm checking into whether the Preference server is affecting it.

You are partially correct. They are given a floating READ license at
login, but take a floating WRITE license when they do ANY OTHER ACTION.

The way it was explained to me is: the server pulls the write token when
the screen is opened (instead of when a modify is initiated) so that it
is ready to use if needed. Personally, I don't believe that

Personally, I think it's done that way to encourage users to buy more

Riddle me this Batman or Wonder Woman,

Why does the Remedy Server issue a floating write license when a user
logs into the server and opens a dialog form.

My understanding is that user would be issued a floating read license at
the time of login and then would be issued a floating license until they
modify a form entry.

We have tested this via the User Tool and via the Mid-Tier and we have
similar results.

Does the DO form have any tables fields, menus, active links that do set
fields/push fields operations, etc. that would do things classified as a
'query'? Or is the license simply allocated when the form is opened
(where no work flow is present)?

I would do an export of the server metadata (forms, workflow, applications, menus, etc.) and do a search for the current server's name on it.  That way you will be ahead when you get to the new server and know what you have to change over.  I would NOT do this after the import as you would have to go back and change information already on the new server.

Having done an emergency move of data taught me that lesson at 2 am.

One more thing - menus.  Even if you migrate or export as server independent, the server name may still be embedded.  Easiest way to find the problem children is to do a full export of the new server AFTER all of your imports are done, then do a search for the old server name in the file.  There might be some table fields affected, too, and macros.

I agree with James, but in addition, if you're using
Centralized preferences, I think you could plug a server alias name in the
client settings that pointed to only the new server.  Regardless, you'll
also have to clear out the Recently accessed forms, etc that reference the old
server name, unless you want to field 100 calls from users who don't know why
they can't access the application.  If you're not using CP, you will
probably have to clear out some local ar.ini file settings that point to forms
on the old server.   RickOn 8/25/06, McKenzie, James J C-E

You may want to look at internal server references and have them point to the new server rather than te old.  At some point you are going to have to drop the old server's Name reference in DNS.

Other than those raised by Rick, no.  However, be prepared for a bunch of phone calls when you decide to do this and you might want to tell how to clear out the ARHome directory to the IT staff so they do not remove required files (arcmds is one directory you do not want to delete, but rather clear out.)

The user base is consolidated as well. There will only be a single prod server up and running when complete. The users will authenticate against it twice because there will be two DNS entries pointing to the same server specified in the user tool.

I tested using the server's IP and DNS as two separate entries in the accounts menu and only consumed a single floating license. This was my biggest concern as well.

any other potential issues?

Chinese Characters on a US database

2006-08-25 Thread VanAartsen, Christopher
I have an issue when adding Chinese characters in our US based system. I
can type the Chinese characters in word (well, I can't, but my computer
can), see them in any other application, but when they are copied/pasted or
typed into Remedy, it changes the characters into question marks. I'm just
attempting to localize the simple requester form, which worked fine for
English and Portuguese. I've opened a ticket with support, but I'm not
getting too far. They want me to run a user tool log that I just can't seem
to get to pull the correct errors.

Environment: ARS 6.3, patch 14 (tried on patch 17 too), running on Windows
2003. Database is SQL 2000 advanced, and is setup UNICODE.

Anyone have any ideas? Anyone willing to go to
http://babelfish.altavista.com , translate
from English to Chinese and see if they can reproduce this error?
补救规则 (aka, remedy rules) If you can't read this and you are using
windows os you probably don't have the east Asian language files installed.
There is a KM article that explains the exact problem I am having, but the
example is for Oracle&HP/UX, I'm trying to find out what to look for, for
SQL.

BTW, if anyone occasionally has normal fields that won't resize right - the

Hi,

Last night I spent a significant amount of time reading archived messages
on this subject, the ARS guide, etc and my workflow is still not
working.

We have several users with inconsistent formats - bsmith, TJackson, rVince,
and our requirement is for a consistent lower case format.

I created a filter which called the function LOWER ($Login Name$) passing
the value LOWER($Login Name$) into the field $Login Name$.  Not
working.  A thread had mentioned a direct SQL statement, which I did not
have the syntax for.  Also there was mention of _javascript_ thru
midtier.  I am trying to get this to work on the client via the user
tool.

Is there a way to modify previous user login ids to lower
case.

I know I can set a pattern of $LOWER$ on the field for future created login
ids.

Is there a way so that when searching on fields, the case does not
matter?  I think someone said "no, and live with it."  Just need to
confirm.

I believe it has to do with the fact that when I manually create a people
record, I have to select a site from the drop-down menu and that then fills
in a bunch (most invisble) fields with data (city, country, street, etc.)

How can I make this work ?

Has anyone done a Remedy 7 implementation that brings in people from LDAP ?

Rgds,

Chris

Another wild probabilty to get it corrected.
Wanna confirm with Remedy before running it?

I agree with James, but in addition, if you're using Centralized preferences, I think you could plug a server alias name in the client settings that pointed to only the new server.  Regardless, you'll also have to clear out the Recently accessed forms, etc that reference the old server name, unless you want to field 100 calls from users who don't know why they can't access the application.  If you're not using CP, you will probably have to clear out some local
ar.ini file settings that point to forms on the old server.

Thanks James -

The user base is consolidated as well.
There will only be a single prod server up and running when complete. The
users will authenticate against it twice because there will be two DNS
entries pointing to the same server specified in the user tool.

I tested using the server's IP and DNS
as two separate entries in the accounts menu and only consumed a single
floating license. This was my biggest concern as well.

any other potential issues?

Sorry, man - all I can say is that I have seen it happen, too, and my workaround was the same as yours.

BTW, if anyone occasionally has normal fields that won't resize right - the workaround for it is the same it's been since v4 - change the label orientation from Left to Top and then back.  I have seen it happen once or twice in v7, too, so it's a good one for the toolbox.

Brian,

One more idea...

v7 stopped supporting a few authentication things...

Verify that the 'Login Name' values are unique in the User form.
Verify that you only have one from that could be used as a User form.
(There is a set of field ID's that are needed... 101,102,103... i think...)

Maybe this is a "less documented feature"?

Darren,

Sounds like you could use a file watcher
utility.  Do a Google search on "file watcher" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22file+watcher%22).

There are also .Net programs available
(ie. http://www.csharphelp.com/archives2/archive377.html)
that you can modify so that you receive an email as soon as the file is
changed.  This may help you track down the cause.

Subject: Mid-Tier
Config.properties file getting erased?

**

Listers,

Have a very strange problem.  We are running mid-tier
7.0 against our 5.1.2 server.  This setup has been working no problems now
for the first two months.  Then as of about a week ago we start seeing
problems where mid-tier would go down.  With Remedy’s help, we
pinpointed that our problem was due to the config.properties file in our
C:\Program Files\AR System\Mid-Tier 7.0\WEB-INF\classes directory somehow
getting blanked out to 0 kb.  Tried searching here, google, and
Remedy’s knowledge base to no avail.  Has anyone ever seen this
problem?  This is just bizarre.  If anyone could help that would much
appreciated.

The changes we know of to the webserver recently has been
SSL certificates.  Not sure if that would play a part.

Darren,

Sounds like you could use a file watcher utility.
Do a Google search on "file watcher" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22file+watcher%22).

There are also .Net programs available (ie. http://www.csharphelp.com/archives2/archive377.html)
that you can modify so that you receive an email as soon as the file is
changed.  This may help you track down the cause.

I did, but since a company paid me to build it, and I know its still in use,
I can't really pass it on. You might find a similar response from most
people. Beyond that, you are likely to find people to help you with small
apps to perform system tasks in this forum, but I doubt too many people are
just going to give you I full product for something that specific.

Software Architect Position in SanFran with Remedy Skills (full relo paid)

2006-08-25 Thread Bill Hoffman
Hi All,

Very tough position to fill. See need below. If you know someone, we will
(with great joy) pay a fat referral fee.

$120k - $140k
+ 10% bonus and excellent benefits

Our Fortune 500 client designs, deploys and administers enterprise-level,
redundant, high-volume, e-commerce application infrastructures for some of
America's best known, largest retailers, airlines and financial service
firms. With an outstanding reputation among its clients, this division is
growing rapidly and offers an exceptional environment of teamwork,
competence, high morale and career trajectory for the right candidate.

The position that we're searching for is central to the success of our
client's highly advanced, customized, web enabled management portal. This
portal provides critical, real-time performance data to end-using
companies to allow them to monitor and analyze their systems and
applications.

In the context of enterprise level integration experience, the eCommerce
Portal and Monitoring Architect will have demonstrable expertise
architecting AND developing across three separate areas noted below. (A
high level understanding of enterprise integration is essential, but
strong hands-on experience is equally important):

* Oracle (Oracle Architecture + SQL Design and Optimization and PL/SQL)
* Remedy (ARS Experience 5.x - 7.x, Perl API, lower layer Remedy expertise)
* Java (Strong Java programming background)

>From a Unix perspective, the right candidate will have solid, hands-on
experience with System Calls, C-Programming and Shell Programming. Perl
programming is also a huge plus. In the software design space,
demonstrated experience with data modeling (logical/physical), Object
Modeling (UML notation) and Design Patterns is necessary.

>From a teamwork and management perspective, the candidate will be
supervising the architecture and development of new features and
functionality to be offered to end-user clients, or the improvement of
existing capabilities, or even resolution of problems. In this role,
depending on a project's requirements, the ability to manage and coach
different development teams to achieve a specific and successful software
integration outcome is a key skill needed. (Frequently, the candidate will
be called on to resolve an actual development detail and/or educate team
members - thus the hands-on experience requirement). Strong interpersonal
skills and a leadership background are important to the success of the
candidate.

Here is something to get you started.

This app stops and restarts the Remedy Email Engine from a BlackBerry.
After you get this working on your computer you will likely want to
modify and enhance it to better suit your needs. This is only a scaled
down version.

Environment:
Windows XP Pro
IIS 5.1 (comes with Windows XP Pro)
Visual Studio 2003

1. Start Visual Studio.
2. Create a new ASP.Net web application.
3. Add a reference to the latest ARS .Net API (BMC.ARSystem.dll).
4. Add two buttons to the form, one named btnStopEmailEngine and the
other named btnRestartEmailEngine.
5. Add one label to the form named lblStatus.
6. Paste in the text from the attached file (below the Web Form Designer
Generated Code section).
7. Set the constants at the top of the code to your server, user name,
password and authentication.
8. Optional: In IIS, add the name of your web page to the default
documents list (so you won't have to enter it on the BlackBerry).
9. Run it from within Visual Studio to test.

Once it works as expected in Visual Studio run it from your BlackBerry
using the BlackBerry Browser

In the CreateActivityLoggingRecord function I am simply creating a new
record in a logging/command form to trigger a filter. You will need to
change the form name and field Ids to match your form. One filter is
used to stop the email engine, and another to restart the email engine.

In the filter to stop the email engine run this command:
NET STOP "Remedy Email Engine"

In the filter to restart the email engine run these two commands:
NET STOP "Remedy Email Engine"
NET START "Remedy Email Engine"

Steven:

Thank you for the update.  I think that I installed the Administrative Client.

I would like to correct a statement that I made on this list.  The 64bit Client for Sparc Solaris does not have the 32bit libraries. You have to install more of a client then this.  I went back to the messag and yes, the Instant Client does have the 32 bit libraries and can be used to install both the 32 and 64 bit libraries.  However, you can install the Admin Client instead.

Also, the 10g Client will work with Oracle 9i database for ARS 7.0.  I have not installed ITSM 7.0 so I cannot state if this will work.  However, there is another team working on this and I will have an update in the next two weeks.

Subject: Installing ARS 7 on SPARC Solaris - Issue and resolution

All,
I thought I'd share my recent experiences installing ARS 7 on SPARC Solaris.  ARS 7 was built on the Oracle 10g 32-bit libraries.

Unfortunately Oracle does not have a 32-bit 10g client for SPARC Solaris.
They do have one for x86 Solaris, but it will not work.  (Which leaves me to wonder how they certified this on this platform to start with).

If you attempt to install with the standard 64-bit 10g client, you'll get error messages similar to the following:
'ld.so.1: arserverd:
fatal: /usr/local/oracle/product/10.2.0/lib/libnnz10.so: wrong ELF class:
ELFCLASS64'

In order to have the installation complete, I downloaded the Oracle Instantclient from Oracle.com, along with all the add-ons.  I extracted the instant client at the same level as the Oracle 10g client:

/usr/local/oracle/product/10.2.0
/usr/local/oracle/product/instantclient

I then copied all the 'lib*' files from the instantclient directory to the /usr/local/oracle/product/10.2.0/lib directory, and re-ran the install.  The installation completed without errors.

It may be possible to just use the 'Instantclient' instead of the full- blown 10g client.  I haven't tested yet, but theoreticaly, it should work.

Hope this helps someone save some time and effort.

Re: Installing ARS 7 on SPARC Solaris - Issue and resolution

2006-08-25 Thread Axton

Yes, this should work. Remedy links to the oci libs, which are in the
instant client. There should be an optional check box for the 10g
32-bit libraries during the 10g client installation that must be
manually checked. Haven't done this first hand on a sparc platform
server though.

They do have one for x86 Solaris, but it will not work. (Which leaves me
to wonder how they certified this on this platform to start with).

If you attempt to install with the standard 64-bit 10g client, you'll get
error messages similar to the following:
'ld.so.1: arserverd:
fatal: /usr/local/oracle/product/10.2.0/lib/libnnz10.so: wrong ELF class:
ELFCLASS64'

In order to have the installation complete, I downloaded the Oracle
Instantclient from Oracle.com, along with all the add-ons. I extracted the
instant client at the same level as the Oracle 10g client:
/usr/local/oracle/product/10.2.0
/usr/local/oracle/product/instantclient

I then copied all the 'lib*' files from the instantclient directory to
the /usr/local/oracle/product/10.2.0/lib directory, and re-ran the
install. The installation completed without errors.

It may be possible to just use the 'Instantclient' instead of the full-
blown 10g client. I haven't tested yet, but theoreticaly, it should work.

Hope this helps someone save some time and effort.

Since most IBM PC type systems do not have a serial number that BMC can read, it is tied to the MAC address on the first NIC on the system.  This can lead to very interesting results if there are two or more NICs in the system.

Installing ARS 7 on SPARC Solaris - Issue and resolution

2006-08-25 Thread Steven Casey
All,
I thought I'd share my recent experiences installing ARS 7 on SPARC
Solaris. ARS 7 was built on the Oracle 10g 32-bit libraries.
Unfortunately Oracle does not have a 32-bit 10g client for SPARC Solaris.
They do have one for x86 Solaris, but it will not work.

Don,

Good to hear from you.

We recently developed a survey process here at Tyco Electronics.  The process uses a Display Only form with Guest Login to on Mid-Tier.  The link to the survey sets a hidden field that links the questions to the survey type.  An active link fires on display that retrieves the questions associated with that survey type.  The questions are entered into fields that are set as display as text so that they look like normal questions instead of text in a field.  The customer answers the response portion of the survey and then presses a submit button that pushes the questions and responses to a results form.

The method can be easily adapted to surveys for Help Desk response, hardware issues, etc by creating associating questions to the survey type.

I look forward to discuss your processes at the next WARUG meeting.

I would also be interested in using my Blackberry to access Remedy this way.

** There was a post on the list "AR System Email Templates Update Question"
that you replied to and you wrote:

"I wrote a couple ASP.Net apps that are designed to run on the BlackBerry and
interact with Remedy (ie. create/update tickets). I plan to write another app
that performs Administrator functions such as restarting services, directly
from my BlackBerry. Basically, from anywhere in the country I will be able to
administer the Remedy system without a computer."

Would you mind sharing those apps with me - I am very interested in ASP.Net
code that interacts with Remedy and I would also like to have a way to re-start
the services on my server remotely. You may reply to me personally if you wish.
Thanks,

Re: ARSLIST as RSS-Feed

2006-08-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Technically possible in addition to the current system,
but perhaps a vote for having it in say, a Remedy system
would be more to the point for our group?

Please do not swamp me/the list with technical discussions about RSS versus
Remedy
I have had enough of those off line

Any plans that I have include keeping the existing email feed in addition to
other access,
and allows submissions only the current way to the list by identified
people,
or authenticated external submission.

Please remember as you don't write any of the above mentioned stuff,
the ARSlist's record of being [external] spam free.

There are things in the works, but since we all have day jobs,
it takes time. Time is money. Time is a limited resource.

It's Friday before BUW, hope to see many of you there.

Hi Daniel,
Do we have the chance to get the list as a RSS-Feed in the next future?

Would anybody prefer this as well?

Thanks
Torsten
