Re: [Bes-admins] Mobile Fusion

2012-04-03 Thread Jonathan Barker
Confusing? Try licensing any Microsoft product at an enterprise level!

In all seriousness, you're not being strong-armed into a Fusion CAL for
BlackBerry OS 10 devices as they will support ActiveSync out of the box much
like Playbook OS 2.0. Fusion will provide a better way of dealing with mobile
devices than unregulated ActiveSync connections.

OK, so:
BB10 = Fusion CAL
iPhone = Fusion CAL
Android = Fusion CAL
BB7 & below = BES CAL

Is that right? And if I have someone on a BB today using a BES CAL and they
move to an iPhone tomorrow, then I have to get a Fusion CAL, I can't 'transfer'
over the BES CAL?

Licensing is so confusing!

I went to one of their sales pitches about Fusion last month - Fusion server is
going to support BB10 phones, BES will not. So you need a CAL for Fusion for
BB10 phones, otherwise you need a CAL for the BES for older phones.

If I understood it correctly (and maybe I didn't, they weren't very clear)
Fusion is going to act as a central management point for various services:
Android, iOS, BB10, and BES (for older phones).

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express to v5.0.3. Upgrade your BlackBerry

So I already bought a BES CAL, if I want to use Mobile Fusion for the people
that want to stay on BB instead of migrating to iPhone or Android I have to buy
another CAL for Mobile Fusion?

I compared the pricing for SaaS based MDM and Fusion. It seems that a lot
depends on the number of users and how your BES support provider is charging
you. Fusion server is free and you pay for the CALs. However, you also pay
for a support contract from RIM or another provider. For the SaaS solution we
only pay a monthly, per-user fee. Support is included and the vendor owns and
maintains the server. If your support provider charges by the number of
users/devices, you have to compare that with what you are paying for SaaS MDM
in addition to the cost of the CALs.

User's Exchange mailbox server is in their local datacenter, but our only BES

BES and remote mailbox servers. And International activations can be finicky.

All offices use the same email domain, with MX records pointing to US Exchange

I had a TSupport call with RIM due to intermittent BES service that started on
Monday but appears to be cleared. TSupport confirmed that it was a RIM network
problem. I notified the outages distro list but it didn't go through.

Once the SRP address is updated is a restart of any service needed? Am i
correct to assume that the Blackberry router service would need a restart, then
watch the router log to confirm that there are no issues with connecting to the

I updated mine from srp.us.blackberry.net to us.srp.blackberry.com with no

to switch now instead of waiting until they changed and then end up trying to

Not sure what I've been doing wrong (even though I updated it immediately to

Now, I'm getting SNMP errors. My knowledge of SNMP is pretty limited, but the

Long story short: we bought a company who's running Groupwise with their BES.
We're moving them over to our Exchange server with our BES, but users are
losing their Groupwise Personal Address Books since we're having it wipe the
connection to the old BES before activating on ours. For users near our office,
we're manually backing up contacts, but for guys out in the field or on
jobsites, this is not an option. Them personally backing up via Desktop Manager
is also not an option because, for lack of better words, they don't like email
directions so we'd have to walk them through the BDM install as well as how to
backup only their address book. From what I understand of Groupwise (I'm not
fluent in it), a BB user can only sync to one Address Book at a time. Is there
any way around these users losing these contacts without utilizing Desktop
Manager?

What if you created a new temp HA BES 5 pair of VMs and migrated your users
like you mentioned to the vm pair and create a secondary HA BES pair with your
4.1 physicals with a different BES names as your new permanent pair and just do
the standard BES 5 moves between your primary vm BES to your physical BES. When
completed the BES to BES move, the VM pair it can be removed from BAS.
Crisscrossing active and passive vm to passive and active physicals seems a bit
more complex but then again I have not worked with vms in BES 5 to that level

Anyone see a problem with the below plan? The goal is to upgrade our BES 4. 1
system without compromising our existing passive BES4.1 failover server for any
length of time.

Set up two VM's for BES 5. One is the passive for high-availability.

Migrate users from BES4.1 physical server to active BES5 VM.

Wipe the BES4.1 machine and install BES5 from scratch. Also wipe the other
BES4.1 physical failover server

Disjoin the passive BES5 VM from the active BES5 VM.

Attach the active BES5 VM to the newly installed physical BES5 server.

Manually fail the users over from the active BES5 VM to the passive BES5
physical server.

Disjoin the BES5 VM (now passive). Attach the Active BES5 physical server to
the newly installed BES5 physical passive server

dropped his BlackBerry and his provider, KPN Netherlands, gave him a new Bold

Anyhow, his OTA activations keep getting interrupted, so I had him wipe then
activate using a USB cable and Desktop Manager while connected to VPN.  That
seemingly works but he is unable to receive emails, just send them.  I've wiped
and tried a few additional times...

I ran the BES readiness check on RIM's site and it says his account is OK...

Any ideas?

2011-01-26 Thread Jonathan Barker
I switched from an 8900 to a 9780 and although it's different, I don't think
the home screen is a problem.

The trackpad default sensitivity is way too high, turning this down may help
inadvertent screen switching.

Does anyone use some sort of device tracking? We had a security issue last
week and now device tracking has come into the equation somehow. I'm looking
at a few, but the best one so far, TeleNav Track, is a carrier-based solution.
We'd want something that is independent of the carrier, and even better, would
work on different devices such as iPhone.

I'd love to see a product that reads the BES location info and puts it on a
google map or google earth map. Ideas?

This is the change I made BTW:

Configure the maximum number of times that the BlackBerry Browser accepts HTTP
redirections

HTTP redirection occurs when the BlackBerry® Browser requests a web page from a
web server and the web server redirects the request to a new web address for the
page. The default limit is 5 redirections.

1. In the BlackBerry Administration Service, on the Servers and
components
menu, expand BlackBerry Solution topology > BlackBerry Domain > Component view.

2. Click BlackBerry MDS Connection Service.
3. Click Edit component.
4. On the HTTP tab, in the Protocol service information section, in the
Maximum
redirect connections field, type a number.

5. Click Save all.

ago, and it happened after running mailbox repair utility on BES 4.1. I
suppose it was something that was queued and not delivered until the services
restarted on our BES.

Re: [Bes-admins] BESX Logs Filling Up Drive

2010-09-28 Thread Jonathan Barker
In BES 4.1 I turn compression on for the log folder. The logs are just .txt
files so they compress very well. Every few months I'll delete old logs and
run disk cleanup. Both could be scripted but I've never found it needed.

Our logs aren't that big, I think 200mb uncompressed for ~350 heavy e-mail
users.

[Bes-admins] experience with the Torch?

2010-09-17 Thread Jonathan Barker
Anyone have any problems with the Torch?

I've set up a few. Seems the only issue is the occasional hang...where it just
sits and doesn't do much for a few moments. Other than that I think it's a
solid product and have been recommending it to people when asked.

Yes. In a low-memory situation, the device will dump older calendar events. I
believe it will drop any event older than 30 days despite being set to keep
forever. I think with an activation it will only load 14 days worth of events.

In 4.1.x unknown app policy doesn't exist, but you simply define the first line

set each app you want in the software config to either optional or required and

Ah, ok, both. Well, once the device is bound to the BES it is "owned" by that
bes. New policies, new encryption keys, etc. Once the device hits the hosted
BES those devices will receive whatever is assigned from that BES, overwriting
yours. (It sounds like you will probably get a blank DEFAULT policy, but
that's just a guess.) You always push something for a policy, even if it is
only the Default.

Novell had a similar fall...once they were the best network OS out there.
Others came in with prettier interfaces that wow'd management and now many
network admins wouldn't know where to start in a Novell environment.

:(

The youtube clips of the BB OS 6 look good. Although at first I didn't think
it'd affect me much, but I'm guessing that we're going to see a lot more
internet bandwidth through our BES. I really do hope that RIM has a
competitive product on the horizon yet will be able to maintain their existing

This is the policy I would like to adopt. Unfortunately, the people
driving this decision are of sufficient management level that I will get
sucked into going beyond the written policy.

I have a meeting next Tuesday. I don't do Powerpoint, but I am putting
together a dog and pony show with regard to costs, reliability, remote
data transfer, etc. My hope is that once I am done, they will (1) be
embarrassed to spend the money, and (2) afraid that things that used to
be correctable OTA, while they were traveling, will be unavailable.

Re: [Bes-admins] Droid X

2010-07-21 Thread Jonathan Barker
We've chosen to support BlackBerry, BlackBerry devices and Exchange ActiveSync.

We don't support non-BlackBerry devices.

This means that if a user gets an EAS phone that doesn't fully support EAS and
our security policies, and it doesn't work, they are out of luck. Many Android
devices don't support EAS security policies correctly, and will not sync.
iPhones had this issue when they first came out too.

By supporting EAS, but not the phones, then IT won't spend more than a few
minutes assisting a user with initial setup.

Security issues obviously are not addressed, but top management made that
decision. We evaluated Good and found that it wasn't what we wanted.

I am starting to get pressure from some top level managers to support
these. Coincidentally, they were the same managers who 2 years ago
drove the decision to switch from Palm Treos to BB. Of course, when
they drove the BB decision, they had no idea about the task of deploying
BES, they just think a phone is a phone from an IT perspective. In the
two years since I have deployed BES and taught myself how to use it, I
think it is one of the best decisions they made for me. No more running
to desks to fix one phone at a time.

My personal phone is the HTC Evo. I love the phone. But I don't want
to support individual phones again. I just don't have the resources,
and don't want to take a step backwards in efficiency.

Whether you have faced the issue with iPhones or Android, I am looking
for suggestions on how you resisted management pressure to support these
non-enterprise phones.

Re: [Bes-admins] Question about providers

2010-07-13 Thread Jonathan Barker
It's not their fault. A few years ago T-mobile had something called a
Corporate account, and something called an Enterprise account. There wasn't an
indication as to what the difference between the two was, only that one cost
more than the other. Considering that each minute plan and service provision
is a different item to select from in one huge drop down list it's amazing that
i didn't have more problems. I talked to our corporate rep on how this was
causing serious confusion in their call centers, and to my surprise less than
two weeks later it was fixed. I assumed that T-moblie would send a memo to its
call center management telling them that it was a training issue but instead
they actually fixed the wordage in their CSR interface.

They still mess up roaming though. Even though when any CSR accesses our
corporate account they are greeted with a pop-up explaining how to add int'l
roaming to a voice-barred BlackBerry, they can't get it right. I've made it my
standard procedure to call t-mobile 2x and talk to separate people to make sure
the roaming features and provisioned correctly. Even then i still have
problems.

Considering none of those CSR's are making over $15/hr I don't get upset at
them too much.

Don't take this as a bash against T-mobile...I work with them the most. The
little i work with for Verizon and AT&T has been the same.

Random question, does anyone know why a provider will remove the BES data plan
and replace it with a BIS data plan? Seems to be happening pretty frequently
(I'd say once every 4-6 months) I'll have a user call in saying that they can
no longer receive email, sure enough ends up being the provider changed their

they have more users on BIS than on a BES data plan?

Just wondering if anyone has any insight.

True, on topic is good.

Our BES tends to be one of the most stable servers I support. I bounced ours
around 2 months ago, and that was only to patch it up. I think the uptime at
that point was a year? maybe. This is on BES4 - we're going to 5 soon and I
hope the stability continues.

Seriously folks ... let's get back on topic.

How often do you restart your BES? Only when patches are required or there is
some big error / problem. If you have planned
reboots of your BES because of problems start to drum up then you have a
systematic / architecture flaw that needs to be addressed.
BES isn't an application that needs reboots to "clear it up".

And to hopefully end the discussion on "how many users do you put on a BES on
ESX?" I've had 4000 users on a single BES.

You can pretty much put any app on ESX ... the reason vendors don't want to
support applications on virtual servers is because
server admins / engineers / architects don't properly spec the resources
required for the application. Baselining and benchmarking
a server for 8 hours one day just doesn't cut it. Lucky for BES it isn't too
taxing on Disk I/O which is without a doubt the single

On pre-5.0, I think if you configure IT policy to enforce external file system
encryption, when you wipe the device the memory card will become unreadable
because the encryption key is lost. Testing would be needed to confirm.

Anyways, now I get to fill out an internal security form and noticed that we
don't have one created for BlackBerrys. So this brings up a couple questions
that I am hoping for some information on

1.Does the wipe reach out to the SD card (to delete photos etc.)?

2.Do you all have any specific information that you think should be in
a customized form? Other than the obvious Who | What | When | Where stuff.

Can you change the sync interval on the iPhone from "as mail arrives" to some
interval to see if that will solve the problem? This will at least tell you if
the issue is the realtime push.

We have the same exchange environment and our two iPhones do not experience
this problem. They are only 3G models.

The weird thing is--if I delete their account that connects to our Exchange

sync'ing with Exchange is causing them to heat up and drain the battery.

A user is having a problem with a personal mail account which concerns
me about out BES server. I know very little about Apple's Mobile Me.
He is getting a lot of spam in his sent mail folder which mobile me is
identifying as originating on his Blackberry.

Usually, in my experience, this kind of spam is either a forged from, or
a botted windows computer. The thing that concerns me is that Mobile Me
is identifying it as coming from the BlackBerry. A botted BlackBerry?
A threat to BES?

Re: [Bes-admins] Using a Proxy Server with BES

2010-05-25 Thread Jonathan Barker
I don’t know the details on it, but since all device traffic is going through
one IP address (your BES server), the ability to block is limited to either on
or off. Individual IP blocking that solutions like Websense provides will only
work at that level.

There may be 3rd-party solutions to this though.

I think it may be all or nothing. We use an auto-config file and figure that
the same conditions should apply to a user going through the proxy regardless
if they are coming from a PC or a BB. However, we do not prevent them from
switching to the internet browser so they could bypass the proxy.

WinMo works unless it’s an older phone that doesn’t use comodo certs.

Re: [Bes-admins] BB vs. iPhone/Android/WinMo7

2010-05-07 Thread Jonathan Barker
We almost canned everything but BlackBerry based on the fact that only
BlackBerry allows you to restrict application installs, including spying
software that can be installed within seconds if someone snatches your device
and hits a web page.

Unfortunately since it’s a lawfirm, and every partner is basically an owner,
and they all love Apple for some reason…we had to allow iPhones.

We demo’d Good technology and it was…decent… for WinMo, but horrendous for
iphone.

We finally settled on “Use At Your Own Risk” with all EAS devices, but forced
the EAS password requirement.

Yes, but we don’t guarantee anything beyond BlackBerry will work.

Android doesn’t work, it doesn’t support EAS security fully. We recommend the
software TouchDown.
iPhones work.
WinMo works unless it’s an older phone that doesn’t use comodo certs.

Re: [Bes-admins] Global Address List Sync to BlackBerry using BESX

2010-05-05 Thread Jonathan Barker
Lookup is not automatic. If the name is in your Contacts it will show up as an
available address to choose. If the name isn't there, press the BlackBerry
button and select Lookup. The BlackBerry searches the GAL for what was
entered, then gives you a list to select from if there's more than one. You
can also Add that person to your Contacts from here or from the
Contacts/Address Book icon.

I personally prefer the iPhone's auto-lookup feature. I hope that we'll see
auto-lookup in the future.

Sounds like I need to be educated here a bit. I thought that is what I needed
to do what to get the GAL on everyone's BlackBerry. But that isn't needed?

Let me see if I understand; the user types in a name, John Smith, that is in
the Global Address List, but not in his personal contacts, it performs an
immediate lookup on the GAL and resolve the address.

Is that right?

Thanks!

We use Desktop Manager and use the 'Device Switch Wizard', then we go to
'Backup and Restore', select Advance and delete from the new device all the
contacts, calender and task, then do a BES reactivation.

Then wipe the old device and give it out to another user.

The execs are getting the newer BOLD devices and turning theirs in so another
staff person can get the older device.
I would like to be able to hand the VP a new BOLD with some of their old setup
intact – like having their password carry over and any BIS setup carryover to
the new BOLD from old 8800. Is it possible?
I think I’d have to use the first option I stated below for this to happen for
the BOLD.
For the 8800, a new user would be activated. So, I get the fact I wouldn’t have
to wipe it – an activation would take care of it.

I think there are 2 ways to do it:

1) Wipe old HH device but leave BES user setup & activate new device

2) Delete user from BES and re-create user & activate new device

Which way is considered Best Practice?

AT&T hasn't certified a 5.0 OS for their bold.

You can install another carrier's 5.0 OS, here's a good place to get details on
doing that:

looked back.

shoes. We have a client with the JVM Error 102. I'm in the BES software
with the device connected. I have the proper OS installed on my
workstation. I'm in the proper groups/policies to be able to do this.
When I right click and tell it to load it says...

Device load initiated.
Device load completed.
A fatal error has occurred while updating your device's software. Please
try again.
No valid configuration found for connected device type.

This isn't super urgent because I've given the client a replacement but
I was hoping I could get this finished before she comes back Monday. Any
suggestions? It's a 8830 (Verizon) blackberry.

Re: [Bes-admins] Filters on non-BES accounts

2010-03-15 Thread Jonathan Barker
It took me a while, but what's missing is a BES icon. This appears to be fixed
in BB OS 5, and I believe it's a setting in BES to set up a separate icon.

In our environment we've had a ton of issues with Exchange ActiveSync phones.
Android doesn't support the two basic security functions correctly (passcode
required, 1-hour timer before locking phone) and ends up not working. This was
a problem with iPone until they updated to support EAS better after a year.

After working with EAS, BES, and even a GoodLink server, I'm a firm believer
that BlackBerry is the lesser of the evils...at least in a corporate
environment.

Yeah. I tried this before and didn't like it. I think this is the
third try in hopes that it improved. I don't like the gmail app much
better, though, at least it doesn't interfere with my BES mail.

Does anyone, besides me, think it is odd that BIS mail creates an icon
to filter for that account only, but BES mail stays in the unified
message app only?

I wish this was better.  I'm thinking Droid for my next personal phone;

Personal issue. Are filters for BIS mail broken or incompatible with
otherwise BES attached phones?

I added a couple of personal accounts, and none of the filters seem to
work. Filters always worked well with my BES account. Tried setting on
either the phone or the web. Neither worked.

Also, I tried using the gmail plugin from RIM on these accounts and
didn't see the threading that was promised. When I first set up the
accounts, I got an email from BIS that it had recognized them as gmail
accounts.

Last, I can't get into the folders (labels), like I can with the BES
hosted exchange account. Is BIS accessing the gmail accounts as POP
accounts instead of IMAP? If so, how is it retrieving stuff that skips
the INBOX?

Hi all,

If I delete and recreate the Blackberry Monitoring Database, will we end up
losing any statistics that have been gathered? I'm unsure whether message stats
(total sent/received etc) are stored in the configuration or monitoring
database.

Note that I'm asking this because I am unable to log in to BMS and think that
recreating it will allow me to start from scratch as it were.

Re: [Bes-admins] Changing Device Passwords

2010-03-09 Thread Jonathan Barker
It's the OS level that matters, not the device. I believe OS 4.5 and lower has
the password in the Security sub menu, where the OS 4.6 and higher has it's own
submenu.

FYI when you apply the IT policy and push it down, the users will be prompted
to enter and confirm a New Password. I'd suggest that you let them know this
ahead of time and just push out the policy. This will prevent the calls from
going to the helpdesk. I'd also advise them that if they go through the 10
attempts that the device will wipe, and that if they need their password reset
to contact the helpdesk/BES Admin.

I am getting ready to deploy an IT security policy requiring users to set a
password on their devices. I am preparing a document to instruct our helpdesk
on how to instruct users to change their password. I personally have both a
Bold 9000 and World Edition. I noticed the option to change the password is in
a slightly different place on these 2 models.

Options, Security Options, Password, and select "Change Password". (Blackberry
Bold 9000)

OR

Options, Security, General Settings, Press Menu button, and select "Change
Password". (Blackberry World Edition)

Can someone tell me if this is the only two variations or if there are many
others depending on the models. We have tons of models and want to make sure
the helpdesk is equipped to quickly help the user without looking it up each
time. Short of proving a link to the user manual for each device, I wasn't sure
of a clever way to handle this.

Re: [Bes-admins] BES Express - two servers on one mailbox

Let's say you could in fact get it working...

The way BES operates, it put's a load on your E-mail server that is equivalent
to 3 additional users. By setting up a 2nd BES to hit the same mailboxes, you
now have 6 users just from BES plus the one real user.

Can your E-mail environment handle that?

My gut feeling is no, but can you have two Blackberrys - one on BES and the

I know you can't have one Blackberry and two mailboxes, but with the new

Would you be able to give me a good rule of thumb to follow on this? I am
running my BES in an Exchange 2003 environment, and the BES is running on
VMware with a remote SQL database. Right now we only have 2GB RAM and a single
Xeon 3.4GHZ processor allocated. I did see the CPU spiking at 100% quite a bit
last week and it is using a 1.8GB page file. Attached is a screenshot of the

Subject: [Bes-admins] anyone else seeing delays?

A lot of my users are getting delays for no reason. Last Contact time is over
15 minutes on a decent number of people, which is unusual for my environment.
I'm checking with our Exchange admins now but just curious if anyone else is
seeing this. I'm in Los Angeles area.

Re: [Bes-admins] Fresh install BES v5.0.1

2010-02-04 Thread Jonathan Barker
I think named pipes needs to be enabled for local access, TCP/IP for remote.
Someone else will need to confirm, it's been a long time since my last SQL
install and I'm not a SQL admin by any definition of the term.

Correct about blocking out local machine name on previous screenshot.

And it looks like named pipes & tcp/ip are both disabled. Enable both?

Launch SQL Server Configuration Manager instead of the Management Studio app
(in all programs, sql server..)

Then select SQL Server network config on the left, then protocols, they will
appear on the right.

There's also something called named pipes and tcp/ip to allow access to the SQL
db. Maybe this needs to be enabled?

Questions asked:
Are you installing this as a local admin on that machine? using the BESADMIN
account?
Are you logged in with a local Admin account? SQL Services Running? If you
install the SQL Management Console, Can you connect to the SQL server using it?

Have you configured SQL security?

Answers:
I am logged in to the server using the BESAdmin user

SQL is running, I can connect to the SQL server using the SQL Management Studio
using both Windows Authentication (BESAdmin user) as well as SQL authentication
(sa user) <-- I assume this means that SQL security is working, but I also know
what happens when you assume.

Here's my troubleshooting steps for activation problems:

1st thing I do is assign a static agent to the BES user account. This seems to
speed up the activation process. YMMV.

Using the Enterprise Activation Readiness tool, confirm that the device is
correctly provisioned by the carrier. This tool is available to TSupport
subscribers.

Login to the user's mailbox (not in cached mode) and then proceed with
activation. I make sure that the RIM NOC email is sent and removed from the
user's mailbox.

Most of the time any problems are discovered in this process and include wrong
carrier provisioning, spam filter issues, or multiple RIM NOC emails in the
user's mailbox.

The last troubleshooting steps I take are performing a Reload on the BES user
account, deleting, waiting 5 minutes, then recreating the BES user account,
Performing a Register Now from the device Host Routing Table and finally wiping
the device.

My understanding is that PINs don't go through BES.
