You can upload directly into Google Docs from within the program. It has an
option to import from your computer, as you might do with any other cloud
app, as an upload. You'll almost certain need to edit/format it once
imported though. The fancier it is on your computer, the more might need to
edit it to make it again presentable.

Is An Antenna Fix Just Around The Corner With iOS 4.01?

by Tim Barribeau on June 26, 2010

AppleInsider is reporting a rumor that Apple is pushing through an iOS
update at full speed, which will hopefully fix the reception issue that
comes from holding the iPhone in the wrong way. The fix would arrive early
next week (maybe as soon as Monday) in the form of iOS 4.01, as was
discussed in a now deleted thread on the Apple support forums. So how is
this going to fix what appears to be a hardware issue?

The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency
calibration of the baseband. Readers who saw the original forum discussions
say that the issue is believed to occur when switching frequencies; because
the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in the device
reporting “no service” rather than switching to the frequency with the best
signal to noise ratio.

Hopefully, it will also fix the poorly calibrated proximity sensor.

PS - They are doing maintenance on the Forums at the moment. Later, I can
post a link to a thread with real world experiences with this. As a
left-handed user, I am concerned enough to stick with my GS on iOS 4 until
things shake out.

YMMV

[CGUYS] Cellphone choices [WAS It's an app world, and it could swallow all computing}

2010-04-01 Thread MrMike6by9
There are very strong hints that a new iPhone will be released before
the end of the year that will be Verizon compatible. Some reports are
saying this will be in addition to ATT as a provider veruss a
replacement. Some of this speculation comes from this WSJ article:

MARCH 30, 2010
New iPhone Could End ATT's U.S. Monopoly
By YUKARI IWATANI KANE, TING-I TSAI And NIRAJ SHETH

Apple Inc. plans to begin producing this year a new iPhone that could
allow U.S. phone carriers other than ATT Inc. to sell the iconic
gadget, said people briefed by the company.

The new iPhone would work on a type of wireless network called CDMA,
these people said. CDMA is used by Verizon Wireless, ATT's main
competitor, as well as Sprint Nextel Corp. and a handful of cellular
operators in countries including South Korea and Japan. The vast
majority of carriers world-wide, including ATT, use another
technology called GSM.

With Apple developing a phone with CDMA capability, its exclusive U.S.
arrangement with ATT dating to 2007 appears set to end.

Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone
Group PLC, declined to comment. An ATT spokesman said: There has
been lots of incorrect speculation on CDMA iPhones for a long time. We
haven't seen one yet and only Apple knows when that might occur.
Apple declined to comment.

Separately, Apple plans to release a new version of its current iPhone
this summer, continuing its practice of annual upgrades at about the
same time of year, said people briefed on the matter. The model is
likely to be thinner and have a faster processor, two people familiar
with the device said.

For ATT, the Apple relationship has been crucial, helping to make the
carrier the U.S. leader in lucrative smart-phone market share.
According to comScore Inc., ATT has over 43% of all U.S. smart-phone
customers, compared with 23% for Verizon. These customers are
especially attractive because they generally pay higher monthly rates
for data plans.

For several quarters, ATT's growth has come almost single-handedly
from the iPhone. In the fourth quarter of 2009, the carrier said it
activated 3.1 million new iPhones. In comparison, it counted only a
net total of 2.7 million new subscribers as some customers moved from
other phones to iPhones.

You're not going to lose the iPhone [exclusivity] and make up growth
somewhere else without bearing the cost, said Sanford C. Bernstein
Co. research analyst Craig Moffett.

The people briefed on the matter said the upgraded GSM iPhone is being
made by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry
Co., which produced Apple's previous iPhones. The CDMA iPhone model is
being made by Pegatron Technology Corp., the contract manufacturing
subsidiary of Taiwan's ASUSTeK Computer Inc., said these people.

One person familiar with the situation said Pegatron is scheduled to
start mass producing CDMA iPhones in September. Other people said,
however, that the schedule could change and the phone may not be
available to consumers immediately after production begins.

Representatives of Pegatron and Hon Hai declined to comment.

Verizon has publicly stated its interest in the iPhone, but people
familiar with the situation said Apple originally decided against
developing a phone for Verizon to keep its development process simple,
since the technologies are incompatible.

Verizon also is upgrading its network to a higher-speed technology, so
Apple has said it believed CDMA was a short-term technology. Apple
later changed its mind as it realized Verizon's upgrade would take
longer than expected, said people familiar with the situation.

Making the iPhone available through Verizon, which has over 91 million
customers, as well as potentially other CDMA carriers could open up a
significant new market. In 2009, iPhone sales globally rose 83% to
25.1 million, far outpacing the 20% to 25% growth in smart phones
sales overall, according to Bernstein. But since Apple already
dominates smart-phone sales through existing partners, sooner rather
than later, Apple is going to have to look to find incremental
distribution, said Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi. He estimates
Verizon could help Apple nearly double the number of iPhone users in
the U.S.

ATT's relationship with Apple, a lucrative deal arranged by Apple
Chief Executive Steve Jobs, shows how such a partnership with other
carriers could present challenges.

Analysts estimate ATT pays Apple more than $600 per phone, but sells
most of them for $199 or less. Heavy iPhone users have also put an
enormous load on ATT's wireless network, pushing the carrier to a
breaking point in some markets such as New York and San Francisco.

Qualcomm Inc., which holds patent rights to CDMA, is the dominant
designer of CDMA chips.

I read this at TUAW this morning:

Remote webcam activation now disabled in software that led to controversy at
Pennsylvania school
by Mel Martin (RSS feed) on Mar 8th, 2010

The suburban Philadelphia school being investigated for spying on students
using MacBook laptops will lose the ability to turn on the built-in cameras
remotely when they update their security software.

Absolute Software, new owners of the LANrev remote administration suite
(formerly owned and developed by Pole Position GmbH), say they are going to
remove the webcam remote activation feature from the software this week.

In a note to customers today, the company said:

We know that webcam pictures are an ineffective tool in tracking down the
location of a stolen computer. Taking pictures of lawful computer users
without their permission, and without law enforcement involvement, is
contrary to Absolute's policies and is inconsistent with our existing, more
effective product offering.

Based on recent events, we have received many inquiries about TheftTrack
from customers who are concerned and who want to ensure their organizations
are not involved in a similar incident.

As a result, the webcam feature is being removed in all updated versions of
the software as of tomorrow. Current customers still have the feature, but
they are being advised by the company to get the latest update.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that two I.T. employees of
the Lower Merion School District have been placed on leave while an
investigation continues.

The incident received national attention when the parents of a Harriton High
School sophomore filed a federal lawsuit on February 16, alleging that
school officials were activating the iSight cameras built into MacBook
computers while students were using the computers at home.

The school has said the cameras were only turned on to locate stolen
laptops, but several students said they saw the green camera light come on
several times on computers that had not been reported stolen.

Federal Agents are also investigating, and have asked the school for all
records relating to the incident.

The school says it has stopped using the software for accessing the webcams
remotely. Over the last two years, the district has provided MacBooks to all
2,300 high school students.

my MBP mostly for web activities like reading and posting in forums as
well as surfing while in the living room or on trips. The Windows
boxes have 2 browsers and 3 browsers, respectively. I run 3 browsers
on the MBP while I rarely use any browser on the XP box which is used
for solely for catching podcasts and streamed shows. I have yet to
find a site that won't load in Safari but I rarely use Safari on the
MBP since navigating through 1,000 posts in forums is a pain when some
threads are pages deep. Firebox has a simple icon for quickly
navigating through 9 or 10 pages of history. In Safari, I need a mouse
to access that page history selectively. So for me, how would their
statistical technique say I am represented on the web? And, if one
could categorize me, what difference does it make anyway? Comparisons
are odious.

Just a brief comment. If I switch to another app on the iPhone from a

Non-native apps start from the beginning. I can listen to a radio

 Hello.
I need your help. Yesterday my computer rebooted itself unexpectedly. And
when it was all ready to go again, there was no Outlook Express. Moreover,
I
couldn't find it in the Program Files or by going to add or remove
programs.
So I did a system restore to the previous day. There it was as expected.
Then last night it rebooted itself again, and same thing. I have now done
another system restore to the same restore point as before and again, all
is
 well.

What I want to do is find out where the OE.exe (or whatever it's called)
is
located so I can find it manually next time this happens. I've tried
adding
a new icon to the desktop but when I go to Outlook Express can't find
oe.exe -- the closest I've come is wab.exe. Will that do it?

Beyond that, what can be happening to OE during this mysterious reboot?

As always, thanks so much in advance for all your help!
 Gail Miller

If memory serves, OE is really a subset of Internet Explorer. That said, I'm
willing to guess you have a piece of mail that may have corrupt or malicious
html code in it. How is your IE working? I always hated html mail. Heck,
before I retired, the Office disabled all rich text html formatting at
the Exchange Server because of the potential for harm from malicious code
delivered via email.

TWO OUT OF TWO TOMS AGREE...
The comment is derived from a general consensus by analysts that
Microsoft's portable media player missed its mark, and doesn't look
to gain any ground in its battle against Apple's iPhone and iPod
 Touch anytime soon.

The market reception for Zune is so disappointing that many
retailers have even stopped selling it altogether, he said.

 http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Microsoft-Apple-Zune-HD-iPod,news-4344.html

Well, the jury is still out for a lot of folks regarding the usefulness of
this app since the iPhone only permits official Apple apps to run in
background. Otherwise, there is no multitasking on the iPhone. If you are
using the Tom Tom app, we don't know yet if you will be able to answer an
incoming call without having to restart the navigation app after call
completion. Many folks are taking a wait and see approach or just getting a
stand-alone GPS device that would have a larger, more legible screen anyway.

ATT has their own paid nav system for WM phones but when I was using
my Q9h, I used Google Maps or Live Search since they both can use the
phone's GPS chip. The only thing missing was turn-by-turn that would
update automatically like the iPhone or a dedicated unit. I had to do
manual updates for my current location; 2 or 3 key presses each time.
One thing I miss on the iPhone is that it doesn't tell you how many
satellites it sees. Both my Garmins and the Q9h told you the number it
was using to fix my location. Even my car's factory unit doesn't do
that.

Can you use either app on your phone or the ones you are considering?
See if you can find some forums dedicated to those phones or the
carriers. I was using the one dedicated to the Moto Q9x but started
visiting iPhones in November. I got my 3GS in mid-July.

Re: [CGUYS] Batch downloading of bank check images

2009-07-16 Thread MrMike6by9
Some folks object to electronic payments systems because they believe the
merchants are passing on the fees the banks and credit card companies charge
in the form of higher prices. Maybe so, but the merchants who deal in cash
also have costs relating to the safeguarding, counting, and depositing. In
addition, there is the threat of robbery in conveying that cash to the bank.
Larger merchants might use a armored car service to handle that cash.

Do people really believe that the expense of handling cash isn't passed
along in some form to the customers anyway?

YMMV

It's true that the credit card companies and the banks provide
services to merchants and their customers, but for a price: interest
and other fees for the customers, and fees for the merchants.

But, in the form of higher prices [which merchants must charge to
cover the cost of credit card fees], you're paying the credit card
companies even if you NEVER use a credit card. [The merchants really
have no other alternative; the banks and credit card companies are
the only ones with any power in this situation.]

I guess I'm surprised that Libertarians and their friends don't
object to this; they're paying for something they're not getting, and
they have no choice in the matter.

2009-06-12 Thread MrMike6by9
It's always painful getting the first iteration only to see better
versions appearing in the following years. I type this on my MBP 1.1
that was 3 years old in March. Current models take more RAM and have
faster CPUs as well as larger drives. Similarly, I have a 17 month old
Motorola Q9h that I bought because I didn't want to get an iPhone v1;
already burned once. The Q9h is great in many ways but the yet-to-be
released WM 6.5 will not run on it or just about any other current WM
phone. Even though the iPhone is likely to change again and
dramatically in 2010, I'm thinking I'll be getting the 3GS in July and
hope that I will not be too envious next June. After all, now OS 3.0
gives the iPhone cut paste and voice dialing like nearly all other
phones. Whatever the cutting edge device/technology, it will always
get better in the future. One just has to be prepared to let go and
move on eventually no matter how good a thing was when you first got
it.

However a lot of the earlier subscribers are a little more than
pissed at how inexpensive the phone is getting especially after how
 much they spent.

One of the ways I have bought technology is never be the first

I got my last Smartphone (Motorola Q) with a deep discount for just
less than $100.00 because I waited.  (Boy does that hurt to wait)

My wife got her last Cell phone (An Env2) for next to nothing because

Not an easy thing to do at all.

Oh my Motorola even though it is not a touch phone does cut and paste.

audio/video being out of sync. One solution that seems to work is to ensure
that both the audio and video signals go through the AV receiver that then
feeds the TV rather than having the video directly connected to the TV and
audio fed to the AV receiver for only sound processing. Many of the better
receivers, it seems, include circuitry with which one can adjust the sync to
try to remedy out-of-sync audio and video. My source of information on these
matters comes from www.avsforum.com.

Subject: Audio/video sync problem with DTV broadcasts

I just cannot stand out-of-sync audio and video. It drives me nuts.
I have written, yet again, to the leader of the pack of out-of-sync
broadcasters in the Washington DC area, WETA television. I had asked
them about this problem nearly a year ago, and their answer to me was
basically a brush-off. While acknowledging the fact of the matter,
they essentially responded by saying it is no big deal. It was almost
as if they were telling me to just get used to it as a by-product of
the digital age, sort of like saying that although the MP3 format
sucks compared to the sonic quality of most other audio formats, it is
the one being widely used, so just quit complaining. I.e., it's just
the way it is, and they way it's going to be.

I'll let you all know what they say this time.

Re: [CGUYS] Verizon TV Box

2009-05-07 Thread MrMike6by9
Just because they use the word FiOS doesn't mean the company
policies/motives differ from those of the cablecos. The laws and regs (they
helped to deveop them through lobbying, etc.) only mandate that you can get
a signal that works with your equipment but it doesn't require those firms
to give that signal to you for free. Thus, it is rare, if not impossible,
for you to be able to purchase an interface device that the provider is
required to let you use for free access to the provider's content. They
are free to charge you for that interface device on a recurring basis (aka
monthly rental) and are not required to sell it to you or to authorize your
privately acquired device(s) on their system. The old, analog OTA, was
grandfathered in but that is going away with the digital transition. Comcast
is converting the analog tier to digital because of the capacity competition
from Verizon. Up to 6 digital channels fit in the space required for 1
analog channel. Think business model. It is not unlike the old days of the
Bell monopoly when you were required to rent their devices to use on their
systems to make/receive phone calls. Maybe something similar will happen
there ... we can only hope.

I just switched from Comcast (Baltimore County) to Verizon 2 days ago.
because of the rebate for my bundle and the fact that Comcast had already
begun to disable my ability to use my DVDR's Tivo's for
time-shifting/viewing WETA and the Cartoon Network. No jokes please, I
happen to like Adult Swim. I can eventually get cablecards for my Series 3
but, for now, I'm using the FiOS DVR's to see if I'd prefer use them
(rentals) vs. renting the cable cards needed for the Series 3 since cable
cards do not currently support OnDemand (which I occasionally use) and PPV
(never used).

In answer to the second question, you would get the same channel on all
outlets.

YMMV

Is it possible to buy the Verizon TV box rather than leasing them? I
would like to take advantage of the great deals Verizon is pushing

Are there aftermarket boxes which will work?

Can we use one box and distribute it around the house to the other TV's?

[CGUYS] Costco rebates [was: Buying tv from Circuit City?]

2009-01-28 Thread MrMike6by9
The standard Gold membership at Costco is only $50 per year which provides
2 cards per household. If you get an AMEX Costco card, you get rebates for
charged purchases at Costco including your gasoline. If you step up to the
$100 membership, each eligible purchase qualifies for a rebate of 1, 2, or 3
percent, as follows: 3% for purchases of automobile gasoline at Costco
gasoline and domestic stand-alone gas stations, excluding gas purchased at
warehouse clubs other than Costco, superstores or supermarkets; 3% at
restaurants; 2% for travel purchases from airline, lodging, car rental,
cruise line, travel agency and tour operators; or 1% on all other eligible
purchases posted to your account. I often buy gas there whenever convenient
because I usually save as much as $ 0.20 - $ 0.25 per gallon over any other
local outlet. I think Sam's and BJ's also sell gas at certain locations as
well but, I can't speak to any rebate policies.

Re: [CGUYS] ? about download speeds

2009-01-15 Thread MrMike6by9
Yes, 16Mb / 3Mb is fast service. If your speed was merely 3Mb down, you'd be
at the minimum of what is usually sold as basic cable internet service. I
always counsel people to remember that real-life speed is what we really
care about and that will always be a function of the load on and the
capacity of every intermediate point between your screen and the provider of
your download.

I don't really understand how to interpret the speed I get on the
speed test sites. This is what I got tonight on Speakeasy
Download Speed: 16523 kbps (2065.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3077 kbps (384.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'm on cable. Is this considered a fast download speed? I ask
because actual downloads I've been doing tonight are incredibly SLOW.

[CGUYS] ? about download speeds

2009-01-15 Thread MrMike6by9
Beg to differ. Bandwidth speed are usually expressed as bits per second
(bps). Thus, the old dial-up modems I used started as 300 baud and went to
1200 baud then to 56K baud. In common usage, the baud rate of a *modem* is
how many *bits* it can send or receive per second. Technically, baud is the
number of times per second that the carrier signal shifts value - for
example a 1200 bit-per-second modem actually runs at 300 baud, but it moves
4 bits per baud (4 x 300= 1200 bits per second). Thus, communications speeds
are conventionally expressed as Kilo or Mega bits per second not Bytes.
The OP said,
I don't really understand how to interpret the speed I get on the
speed test sites. This is what I got tonight on Speakeasy
Download Speed: 16523 kbps (2065.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3077 kbps (384.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
So, you are correct in saying that she has 2000KB service but, by
convention, it is usually stated that she has 16Mb (or 16000Kb) service.

YMMV

First let's be careful about b vs. B. Little b is bits and big B
is bytes. That is why the above b vs B rates differ by 8x. I don't
think all of the replies have used the same b or at least I was
confused about what was being stated. For broadband it is probably
simpler to state everything as KB.

So you have 2000 KB down and 384 KB up. Which for a single user is
probably okay, but not great. Adequacy depends on what you want to do
with your computer and how patient you are personally. If you are using
it for Netflix or BitTorrent you may want a faster connection.

Re: [CGUYS] No ID? No Internet for You!

Where I worked, before retirement, we were using a CAC to access our
workplace machines for over 6 years. A friend who works for a civilian
agency lives with a system that has each machine dedicated to a
specific user. If his machine goes down or he goes to another
office/location, he cannot log on to a computer. With the CAC, we were
theoretically able to log on to access any similarly protected,
networked computer. A new account automatically created for the new
user on that machine. This made the change-out of defective equipment
very easy which minimized downtime for the employee. Obviously, this
strategy works when all user data is available on networked shares or

I've owned or used 2 Garmin Nuvi models and currently have a factory

routing based on preferences such as no toll roads, shortest time, shortest
distance, easiest or most direct route. The Nuvi also supports pedestrian as
well as vehicular. The 750/760 series is advertised as allowing for 12
custom routes (iirc) with as many as 10 inserted waypoints each. It provides
turn-by-turn voice prompts for these as well.

I also have a Moto Q9h which uses free apps like Windows Live Search,

Re: [CGUYS] Comcast DVR

2008-10-01 Thread MrMike6by9
In my area, Comcast uses Motorola devices. In our case, you can determine
the specific model by looking on the underside of the DVR. The general rule
is that Hollywood doesn't want you to be able to make digital copies of
their content. So you can not copy files from the DVR but must play them
(in real time) to an external recorder. Further, you need to be certain that
you have compatible outputs from the DVR to the inputs of your recorder. In
some cases, the DVR will have a coax out but not always and Comcast might
disable some I/O ports in your local area to be Hollywood compliant. Your
best bet is to experiment.

In my case, I have a Moto 3412 which has a coax out that I run to a Pioneer
DVDR. The cableco box feeds the TV through component (HD) connectors. When
the d**n cableco box doesn't misbehave, I can make the scheduled recordings
to it and then play back to the DVDR so for archiving.

Note also that Comcast generally will NOT let you remove the cable
connection from the box and still have it work. For example, you cannot take
your cableco box to a vacation home to view stored content. Fun ain't it?

I think we covered this before, but about 1/3 of the CGUYS messages are
being marked with a Spam prefix in my Inbox. Why is this? tia.

That depends on what is being used for your spam filtering, but
something, text or something else, is triggering your filter. Is your
spam filter at the server or desktop? If the desktop, you'll either
need to tweak some settings or add the CGUYS to your whitelist. If on
a server, you would need to contact your sysadmin.

Spam filtering is more art than science. I've lost track of just how
many filters our product, Xwall, uses, but it's designed for a
multi-filter approach, as what one will miss, another will catch.
It's false positive rate is 1%, but it's a balancing act as to how
aggressive to be when filtering spam. Too aggressive and there are
too many false positives, not aggressive enough and too much spam
 slips through.

Comcast started using a filtering service that was terrible and
blocked about a 1/3 of CGUYS messages. There was no notice nor any
way to retrieve the blocked messages. That's a piss-poor and
amateurish way of filtering spam. I moved by CGUYS sub to Gmail and
the problem is solved. I give everyone my gmail address now. I don't
plan on using the Comcast address for anything important.

One of the ways the audio and the video can get out of sync is because the
video is fed directly to the screen while the audio is routed through a home
theater receiver (or the equivalent), for example. Better HTR's may have
audio delay circuitry the user can invoke to try re-sync the two. I have not
had personal experience with noticeable delays in my setup. Note also that

The latest version of Windows Update is incompatible with Zone Alarm,

causing the firewall to block access to the Internet via IE and/or

I've shutdown ZA and gone back to Windows firewall until they can get

problematic on various machines. Particularly in older installations or
older computers. It just loses functions. Often re installation doesn't
 help.

[CGUYS] Disc vs. Disk

2008-04-07 Thread MrMike6by9
Hm. According many references on line, most people use the words
interchangably but cite disc as the preferred British/European spelling
possibly due to its Latin root discus and going back to the time when
Phillips and Sony developed the compact disc. Apparently, Apple prefers to
use the spelling disc for optical storage media -
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302152. I tend to use disc
it whenever I refer to circular electronic data storage media.

YMMV

No, he means disc, as in CD or DVD. Talking about backing it up.

 I would never do that.

I back up to disk, not disc. The days of disc are nearly gone.

Re: [CGUYS] Do Not Call Lists

2008-02-20 Thread MrMike6by9
I meant to add. Many of those services that use these 800's numbers appear
to be using boiler rooms from which multiple numbers are dialed
simulatanously. You will often pick up and hear nothing since another line
answered first and that child of God spilled his/her spam on that
unfortunate person before he got your call. Call backs to these
numbers often go to a non-working number or to a line that says it cannot
accept incoming calls. How about that?

You can find out about a lot of this by reading the comments people post at
whocalled.us and at 800notes.com. A couple of weeks back, for example, I
got a call from 123-456-7890 according to the caller id. Sheesh!

Re: [CGUYS] Do Not Call Lists

2008-02-19 Thread MrMike6by9
Some thoughts. I found that one of the best solutions for dealing with
unsolicited phone traffic is an answering machine with caller-id or a
speaker. They rarely bother if the machine picks up first. If I hear a
familiar voice say my name, I can pick-up or return the call. My caller-id
shows that there are a LOT of 800 numbers calling during the day. You can
often check them out with 800notes.com and with whocalled.us. I'm sure
there are others. The doing business bit with the do not call registry is
within the last 6 months, IIRC. You usually have to UNcheck the box that
permits third party businesses from contacting you, phone or email. I now
have Comcast digital voice and can block 12 numbers at a time. I keep an
Excel sheet of numbers and dates they call. If one shows more than once or
twice, it gets blocked. Groceries rotate their stock, I rotate 800 numbers
on my blocked callers list.

that changes every 120 (?) days for the website through which all our
CAC's and the associated accounts are maintained. We sign onto the LAN

 Subject: Re: Are Passwords Obsolete?

A CAC card (Computer Authorization Card???) is a ROM that plugs into a USB
port and is the authentication for Windows/system logon, and everything else.
It's been used for a few years now on military networks. No reason it
couldn't be extended to civilian uses. CAC may not be entirely correct,
but I believe it is. I don't have one. The user carries it around on his

Opera, the browser, has a built in tool for real time monitoring of
your speeds.

I have enjoyed success with an app called NetPerSec that gives real
time up/down speeds. I especially like the free app NetStat Live from
Analogx.com (same guy who created DSLReports.com aka
Broadbandreports.com and Internettrafficreport.com). It includes many
configuration options and gives traceroute and ping times for a
designated website. It can provide data in bits or bytes and totals
since last boot, for the current and past month and has a CPU
utilization monitor.

I prefer computer-based monitors over speedtest web sites since the
results from the sites are only as good as the internet traffic at
that instant. The computer based monitors give you average performance
over time.

YMMV

So 2 questions, really - a) any good, reliable, hopefully free, sites =

 b) any thoughts as to why loading might be getting significantly =
slower, even if I close other applications?

Re: [CGUYS] The Worst Thing about Macs

2007-10-21 Thread MrMike6by9
The author of the piece said it right for me as well. My computing
days go back to CP/M and UNIX BSD via a dumb terminal. I resisted
buying a Mac for the same basic reason cited, the machine users tended
to be the sort I didn't want to associate with. Constantly denigrating
the choices of others with terms like PeeCee Weenie and more. I did
eventually buy a MBP about 18 months ago and use it daily but I don't
worship any computer or OS.

On another topic. Not buying an iPod is NOT sad. My 4G is 2 years old
next month. It has been treated very well, never dropped, etc.
However, it has started playing 10 seconds of sounds and skipping to
the next track or freezing tighter than a drum. I've read postings in
several forums from users of the non-iPhone units are seeing similar
weirdness. My 2 year old iRiver unit gets much more use and still runs
like a champ. I'm not looking forward to spending $300 every 2 years
just because it is made by Apple.

Re: [CGUYS] UPS Question

2007-10-15 Thread MrMike6by9
The more sophisticated units often have self-test circuitry even if
the unit is setup to be monitored by a connected computer; this may
relate to the 2-4 AM thing. The other issue might be a failing
battery. They do wear out. I have 2 TrippLite 1000VA units that have a
real time read-out for the line voltage. They were about $100 the last
time I saw one at Costco.

YMMV

I know UPS issues have been covered in the past. As many of you may know, I'm
an advocate of using them. Recently (within the past 2 weeks!) we have begun
 having UPS issues:

To wit: Sometimes, in the middle of the night (2 am - 4 am), two of our UPS's
begin to click / beep. Not sound an alarm, mind you, just to click / beep
quietly in a rhythmic pattern. I cannot find reference to what this might
 mean,
though I think it means that the circuit being used is browning out power
 and
the UPS is making up the missing power.

Last night this happened at about 11 pm!!!

Eventually, the UPS's (we have many, but only two are involved in this
situation) begin to blare. Then everything shuts down and they continue to
 blare
 until reset and recharged.

This is a very frustrating situation as it only affects two of our 4 UPS
units (all in the same room, but possibly on separate circuits). It is also
happening to a neighbor! Same scenario. Only our UPS's are far enough
 away that
they don't wake us. Hers, sadly, wakes her when it begins to scream. (Please
don't ask about the 2 am - 4 am thing. I sometimes work late into the
 night/morning.)

We can tell when this scenario has occurred because a telephone answering
machine ceases to work, and because my iMac is turned off. There are two UPS
units involved. One has only the telephone answering machine plugged into its
battery back-up sockets, and the other has only my iMac connected to its
 battery
back-up sockets. Dedicated UPS's if you will. It is unclear if these are on
 the
same circuit breaker or not. It's also weird that sometimes one of the UPS's
is affected, and sometimes both of them are affected at the same time.

I have searched for references to sounds made by APC UPS units without
success. These units are all relatively new (a higher capacity one was
 purchased
last week for my computer in the hope that would help resolve the problem
 with my
computer shutting down, but to no avail), and their batteries should be in
 good condition.

Any help / advice / would be appreciated.

Re: [CGUYS] OT:Cell phone do not call

2007-10-03 Thread MrMike6by9
I followed the cell phone/spam disucssions with interest since about 3
years ago, I began receiving spam call/robot calls from the public
school system telling me that my child could not attend without the
propoer vacinations 3 problems: I have no school age children, I
don't live in that district, and the message provded no contact
information to tell them to stop. For a time, the calls were weekly or
even daily. I searched for phone numbers for the school district but
could never find the correct office. Eventually, last Spring, I was
given a number to call. I could only leave a voice message and never
got a call back but these robot calls appear to have stopped ... wait,
I'd better check my phone good, no missed calls ... so far ...

Subject: OT:Cell phone do not call

After I got a new cell phone number recently I began receiving many spam SMS
messages. I listed my cell number with the Do Not Call registry and the
 messages soon stopped.

I like NOD32 on my current desktop.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130906-c,securitysoftware/article.html

It has a small footprint, works right out of box, it costs about $30
annually, you get new def files several times a day.

I use AVG Free on my Dell laptop and my PII-800 machine. My MBP
doesn't have an AV program.

YMMV

A coworker of mine just bought a new Dell computer (with Vista) and her
free Norton Anti-Virus (spyware blocker etc) has expired. She turned to
me to ask me if she should renew it or get something else and if so
what. I told her I couldn't answer it because as she knows I'm a Mac
man and that would be a different answer. I however told her that I
would check with the list. What do you recommend? It is a family
computer. They are a family of 3. Their son is about 12.
 Thanks

Re: [CGUYS] iTunes updates

2007-09-21 Thread MrMike6by9
My 60GB 4G iPod has been exhibiting increasingly strange behavior. I
had thought the nearly 2 yo device was failing but, after viewing
pages on iLounge and on the Apple forums, I am beginning to suspect
that recent iTunes updates may be breaking the older units ... or
maybe it's just a coincidence h?

YMMV

The iPhone, iPod Touch and other new iPods are driving these updates. To
update the software for any of these requires new iTunes software. One
update, e.g., included ringtones for the iPhone and there's another one
coming this month that will allow the iPhone to access the iTunes store
wirelessly (as the iPod Touch does now). There have also been reports of
minor bugs in the software for other iPods that these software releases
  rectify.

Re: [CGUYS] Comcast Triple Play

2007-09-11 Thread MrMike6by9
My experience comes from getting tired of Verizon. I used my cell for
any toll calls and had a very limited service for 20-30 local calls a
month (for my Tivo). They kept trying to nickle and dime me with $2-3
increases with no added benefit to me. I switched to triple play;
already having had HSI and DTV. Now I have full featured, unlimited
phone service too. My total bill (for 2 years at least) is less than
what I had been paying for HSI DTV alone (by about $5) and I no
longer pay the extra $20+ a month to Verizon. From what I found on the
pricing, the phone service should go from $33/month to about $40 at
the end of the promotion (taxes and fees extra).

Now, if they could only give me a reliable DVR

 Subject: Compaq, Vista doesn't connect

My husband picked up a 'hot' deal on a new Compaq notebook [almost
free], for basic web surfing and word processing. It connects to the
Internet OK via ethernet, but the WiFi has problems. It 'sees' the
network, but doesn't connect. Reception is poor, even when sitting next
to the switch. Reception isn't good with his Dell, either, but the iBook
 connection has been good.

Message he gets is that network is insecure, even though there's a
firewall. What can he do to connect? I taped a bent coathanger to the
back of the Dell display and reception is much better, but Compaq won't
connect no matter how strong the signal. Is it security settings?

It may be a cheap and/or bad wireless card in the lappie.

He also has a stack of new commercial antivirus/protection/antispam
software. Are any of the McAfee, CA, or Symantec/Norton products any
good, or should he get something else and sell those on eBay?

I use AVG Free on my Dell laptop and older desktop. My current, main
PC has NOD32 which updates several times a day, has a small processor
footprint, and only costs around $25 for the subscription.

David Pogue -

[quote]
It's called T-Mobile HotSpot @Home, and it's absolutely ingenious. It
could save you hundreds or thousands of dollars a year, and yet enrich
T-Mobile at the same time. In the cellphone world, win-win plays like
that are extremely rare.

Here's the basic idea. If you're willing to pay $10 a month on top of
a regular T-Mobile voice plan, you get a special cellphone. When
you're out and about, it works like any other phone; calls eat up your
monthly minutes as usual.

But when it's in a Wi-Fi wireless Internet hot spot, this phone offers
a huge bargain: all your calls are free. You use it and dial it the
same as always — you still get call hold, caller ID, three-way calling
and all the other features — but now your voice is carried by the
Internet rather than the cellular airwaves.

These phones hand off your calls from Wi-Fi network to cell network
seamlessly and automatically, without a single crackle or pop to
punctuate the switch. As you walk out of a hot spot, fewer and fewer
Wi-Fi signal bars appear on the screen, until — blink! — the T-Mobile
network bars replace them. (The handoff as you move in the opposite
direction, from the cell network into a hot spot, is also seamless,
but takes slightly longer, about a minute.)

Re: [CGUYS] On Line TV Listings [WAS: the Myth of TiVo [was Re: DVD-RW]]

2007-05-24 Thread MrMike6by9

For those who might like to use an online resource for listings, I
recommend www.titantv.com and www.zap2it.com. They each are
customizable for your local carrier and give you about 7 days of
programming. If you have multiple outlets, TitanTV is better since you
can setup a tab/page for each such as 1 for digital cable, 1 for
directv, and 1 for OTA/analog. Titan can also be customized to default
to a time of day. Mine is set for prime time, 7PM - 11PM. Both
services provide synopses of shows, cast lists, whether first run or
repeat, and future air dates as well as info like whether it is HD or
in DTD/DD 5.1. BTW, the Tivo listings give about 14 days of
programming information and thinking of it as a substitute VCR is
liking thinking broadband is the same as dial up.

used regularly, clogged heads, etc. I do much of my B/W printing at
work ... doesn't everyone? I was really torn since only the Epsons (at
the time) had several units that could print on a CD/DVD. I hand label
my discs anyway so it hasn't been a problem G.I vote for the Canons.

Re: [CGUYS] three-finger command et al.

2007-05-09 Thread MrMike6by9

What three-finger command are you talking about? My XP Pro desktop at
home is locked but running 24/7. I merely click on my USERID icon
and enter the password. My work machine uses a CAC. Once again no
three-finger command. To power up any of these machines, including my
MBP, I depress the power button and enter my credentials at the login
screens.

I installed a WD 500 GB drive (My Book Premium @ $230 MSRP) that came
with an automated backup program. I designate which folders and times
and it performs incremental or full backups. No sweat.
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=224

Our work machines are configured to store all our docs on a U:Drive
which is all well and good as well as the network traffic isn't heavy
and the LAN hasn't died then you are SOL. I've seen the difference in
load and save times with LAN storage, I prefer local storage with
regular backups to the LAN.

YMMV

OS X is not, I think to blame for an ill-placed power button. My G5's
power button is on the front of the desktop chassis. My G4 Powerbook's
power button is to the right of the keyboard. The eMac, a reduced cost
iMac, is out of production. I have not visited Apple recently - are the
power buttons hard to find on the current models?

Personally, I despise the three-finger command required to start up (or
wake up) Windows computers. Ugh.

[CGUYS] Dump WEP go to WPA or WPA2 if possible

2007-05-09 Thread MrMike6by9

I was at a geek gathering this weekend. One fellow told us of a poor
soul who only used WEP to secure his wireless network and someone
cracked it and used his connection to download child porn. The upshot
was that the owner of network was sentenced to 5 years per image. The
object lesson is that WEP can be cracked with relative ease these days
by monitoring packet traffic.

[quote]
Your home or office WiFi network may be even less secure than you
think. Researchers have now shown that they can break 104-bit WEP, a
common 802.11b/g/n security mechanism, in as little as one or two
minutes. A team at the Technische Universität Darmstadt said that they
can grab the key with a 95 percent probability of success in as little
as two minutes using a 1.7GHz Pentium-M machine to do the
calculations.

Re: [CGUYS] LCD TV's and how to feed them

2007-05-08 Thread MrMike6by9

Tivo and other DVRs get their scheduling information from services
like Tribune. If the programmer doesn't give them updating
information, then these services will not have it either. I like to
check sites like Titantv and Zap2it for my regular tv guide info. My
Tivo makes daily calls for scheduling data but ... see above.

YMMV

I have TIVO and like it immensely. But it does have one glitch I
found out this weekend. If an event is cancelled and rescheduled it
does not pick it up on Season Pass.

Re: [CGUYS] Cleaning the Dust out of a PC

2007-05-02 Thread MrMike6by9

OK, I've been reading this thread with amusement and decided to add my
$0.01 from experience. I have a can of compressed air and decided to
dust my machine a while back. I was very careful to use short bursts
of air to avoid condensation. I finished by using a ever so slightly
moist rag to wipe some surfaces inside and out and carefully closed
the case and went back to work. A few days later, I needed to burn a
disc but my drive wouldn't recognize the blank so I opened the case to
try to see what might be loose, etc. Seeing nothing, it finally hit me
what probably happened. I pulled out a CD drive cleaning disc and ran
it on my burner. Sure enough, some of that chased dust had managed to
work its way inside to coat the lens on the burner. Caveat!

YMMV

But if both the vacuum cleaner and the computer are grounded I expect
that static discharge will not happen.
