I have successfully used a program called Total Recorder on my XP Vista PC's. I use the pro version almost daily to schedule the program to connect to a web site capture the stream at specific times. It natively captures recordings as WAV files but there are free encoders for it to create mp3's, for example, at various bit rates as well as options for ogg vorbis and other formats, if memory serves. It has an option to import from your computer, as you might do with any other cloud app, as an upload. You'll almost certain need to edit/format it once imported though. The fix would arrive early next week (maybe as soon as Monday) in the form of iOS 4.01, as was discussed in a now deleted thread on the Apple support forums. So how is this going to fix what appears to be a hardware issue? The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency calibration of the baseband. Readers who saw the original forum discussions say that the issue is believed to occur when switching frequencies; because the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in the device reporting “no service” rather than switching to the frequency with the best signal to noise ratio. Hopefully, it will also fix the poorly calibrated proximity sensor. PS - They are doing maintenance on the Forums at the moment. There are very strong hints that a new iPhone will be released before the end of the year that will be Verizon compatible. Some reports are saying this will be in addition to ATT as a provider veruss a replacement. The new iPhone would work on a type of wireless network called CDMA, these people said. CDMA is used by Verizon Wireless, ATT's main competitor, as well as Sprint Nextel Corp. and a handful of cellular operators in countries including South Korea and Japan. The vast majority of carriers world-wide, including ATT, use another technology called GSM. With Apple developing a phone with CDMA capability, its exclusive U.S. arrangement with ATT dating to 2007 appears set to end. Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, declined to comment. I guess I can't see the meaningfulness of this stat. I regularly use 3 computers; a OSX 10.6 MBP and 1 each XP Pro and Vista machine. I use my MBP mostly for web activities like reading and posting in forums as well as surfing while in the living room or on trips. The Windows boxes have 2 browsers and 3 browsers, respectively. I run 3 browsers on the MBP while I rarely use any browser on the XP box which is used for solely for catching podcasts and streamed shows. I have yet to find a site that won't load in Safari but I rarely use Safari on the MBP since navigating through 1,000 posts in forums is a pain when some threads are pages deep. Firebox has a simple icon for quickly navigating through 9 or 10 pages of history. In Safari, I need a mouse to access that page history selectively. So for me, how would their statistical technique say I am represented on the web? And, if one could categorize me, what difference does it make anyway? Comparisons are odious. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try. Do a Google search with the phrase stylus for iphone and you'll see the possibilities. There are gloves made with conductive finger tips for people like your parishioner. YMMV I find this all too impossible to follow. If I remember correctly a stylus is unusable on the ipad (if it has a touch screen like an Iphone) You must use finger contact. I have the Logitech Squeezebox Boom while a friend of mine has the Pandora Radio by Livio. These sets are quite appropriate for news and talk programs from the likes of NPR, PRI, and BBC. Their audio fidelity is quite acceptable for tabletop radio. Just about any broadcast radio station you'd fancy has an internet presence. I often listen to west coast NPR feeds, for example, since they don't delete as much (if you time it right) for local content/stories. My radio can access my Napster playlists as well as Pandora and Last.FM. My friend's radio is especially configured for the ease of use for the thumbs up and thumbs down for Pandora playlists. I can go to sleep just about any night of the week listening to Echoes, for example. I have an XM sub and there is supposedly a way to stream their content on the Squeezebox but I haven't played with it yet since I've only had the Box since Xmas. It looks like a regular tabletop radio, but plays anything that streams from the internet, about 17,000 stations worldwide. I read the forums at www.everythingicafe.com several times a day. I first heard of this default search engine thing regarding the deal that pushed Bing onto Verizon cellphones a short while ago. Folks expressed worry that this sort of change could be mandatory. It becomes most onerous when stuff breaks the functioning of the device the user has relied on. As long as the user can still select a default, (search engine in this case) people don't seem as worried. The fear is that this move is further evidence that a permanent ban on Google products might be in the offing for users who don't feel comfortable about jailbreaking their iPhones. I, for one, wish to continue having the freedom to use Google products on my iPhone and on my MBP. What are they called? How does one determine if a particular camera is one of them. Spec sheets seem to be short on such information. That's the reason it's a good idea to browse sites like DPReview (www.dpreview.com) and Steve's Digicam (www.steves-digicams.com/camera-reviews). They do extensive testing of new models and often have old reviews of a model you currently own. You can easily get MEGO (My Eyes Glaze Over) but after reading a few reviews of units in the price range, configuration, size, et al. of your future camera, you can get a good feel for the pluses and minuses you are making in your buying choices. You might want to see if other bluetooth devices are in the immediate surroundings. A couple of years ago, I shared a hotel room with a friend whilst on vacation. I was trying to help him pair his new headset to his new phone. It didn't work at first but I soon realized that the headset had paired with my laptop across the room from us. Similarly, I've gone to my car to pre heat it to clean the windscreen, etc. I've seen it acknowledge the presence of my phone even though that phone was still in my house at the time. A friend of mine used Mint for a bit but grew to hate it. He had hoped to eliminate the need for posting receipts to Quicken (or a similar) application but complained that they often took days to post transactions or failed to include details like the vendor names for debit transactions. As a system to keep you out of trouble on a timely basis, it didn't pass his test. Me, I was turned off the moment I heard Intuit had acquired it. I believe many carriers allow a 30-day experience with a new subsidized device before you are fully committed to the 2-year contract. With ATT, I only needed to wait 18 months before going from a Q9h to my 3GS. It would have been 2 years if I had switched carriers. I've seen my 3GS perform noticeably faster than a friend's 3G. OS 4 is rumored to be soon and Apple seems to be on an annual summer cycle for new iPhone iterations. My first gen Touch has Gmail installed as an Exchange account. As such, my calendar and contacts are synced with the Google data over WiFi. So, yes, it can be done as you want. However, I do so enjoy the convenience of the data plan on my iPhone. It makes GSP/mapping, and simple internet info queries so much easier. This summer, navigating the NYC subway system was a breeze. Just a brief comment. If I switch to another app on the iPhone from a Apple native app such as Safari, Safari will bring up the last page viewed when I return to it. The iPod player works the same way. Non-native apps start from the beginning. I can listen to a radio station with Ootunes on the phone but I cannot read my email at the same time. When I return to Ootunes, it does resume that last station but it cannot play in the background while I'm viewing email. The Sirius app has the same limitation. Some of the Mac Books had USB ports that were more powered than others. I don't remember which ports but if you have trouble with one port try one on the other side. My first gen MBP has a free USB port on the right side and on the left. The port on the left is close to the mag safe power plug but only the port on the right can power my USB hard drive that I use for backups and my iTunes collection. I use the port on the left side to support my IPhone and my iTouch. ATT has their own paid nav system for WM phones but when I was using my Q9h, I used Google Maps or Live Search since they both can use the phone's GPS chip. The only thing missing was turn-by-turn that would update automatically like the iPhone or a dedicated unit. I had to do manual updates for my current location; 2 or 3 key presses each time. One thing I miss on the iPhone is that it doesn't tell you how many satellites it sees. Both my Garmins and the Q9h told you the number it was using to fix my location. Even my car's factory unit doesn't do that. Can you use either app on your phone or the ones you are considering? See if you can find some forums dedicated to those phones or the carriers. I was using the one dedicated to the Moto Q9x but started visiting iPhones in November. I got my 3GS in mid-July. If the reading drive only reads, such as a DVD-R drive versus a DVD-RW or DVD+RW, then the Samsung-created disc MUST be finalized. It's always painful getting the first iteration only to see better versions appearing in the following years. I type this on my MBP 1.1 that was 3 years old in March. Current models take more RAM and have faster CPUs as well as larger drives. Similarly, I have a 17 month old Motorola Q9h that I bought because I didn't want to get an iPhone v1; already burned once. The Q9h is great in many ways but the yet-to-be released WM 6.5 will not run on it or just about any other current WM phone. Even though the iPhone is likely to change again and dramatically in 2010, I'm thinking I'll be getting the 3GS in July and hope that I will not be too envious next June. After all, now OS 3.0 gives the iPhone cut paste and voice dialing like nearly all other phones. Whatever the cutting edge device/technology, it will always get better in the future. The OP did not state whether the monitor was an LCD or a CRT. If a CRT, even if the power indicator light had failed, you might hear the power surge to start the tube. When I started with my first LCD TV a receiver, I read of complaints about audio/video being out of sync. One solution that seems to work is to ensure that both the audio and video signals go through the AV receiver that then feeds the TV rather than having the video directly connected to the TV and audio fed to the AV receiver for only sound processing. Many of the better receivers, it seems, include circuitry with which one can adjust the sync to try to remedy out-of-sync audio and video. Just because they use the word FiOS doesn't mean the company policies/motives differ from those of the cablecos. The laws and regs (they helped to deveop them through lobbying, etc.) only mandate that you can get a signal that works with your equipment but it doesn't require those firms to give that signal to you for free. Thus, it is rare, if not impossible, for you to be able to purchase an interface device that the provider is required to let you use for free access to the provider's content. They are free to charge you for that interface device on a recurring basis (aka monthly rental) and are not required to sell it to you or to authorize your privately acquired device(s) on their system. The old, analog OTA, was grandfathered in but that is going away with the digital transition. Comcast is converting the analog tier to digital because of the capacity competition from Verizon. Up to 6 digital channels fit in the space required for 1 analog channel. Think business model. It is not unlike the old days of the Bell monopoly when you were required to rent their devices to use on their systems to make/receive phone calls. Maybe something similar will happen there ... we can only hope. I just switched from Comcast (Baltimore County) to Verizon 2 days ago. because of the rebate for my bundle and the fact that Comcast had already begun to disable my ability to use my DVDR's Tivo's for time-shifting/viewing WETA and the Cartoon Network. No jokes please, I happen to like Adult Swim. I can eventually get cablecards for my Series 3 but, for now, I'm using the FiOS DVR's to see if I'd prefer use them (rentals) vs. renting the cable cards needed for the Series 3 since cable cards do not currently support OnDemand (which I occasionally use) and PPV (never used). I've had a D60 for about 10 months. It's a very nice camera even with my 61 YO eyes. I obviously must use the viewfinder in this DSLR but I Nikon has several high-end units using their live (pre)view technology (D3, D300, D700). The D90 now has live (pre)view as well. It can also record motion as well as still frames. Other makers with live preview include Canon Olympus with 8 or 9 units each. There are downsides to live preview. Yes, 16Mb / 3Mb is fast service. If your speed was merely 3Mb down, you'd be at the minimum of what is usually sold as basic cable internet service. I always counsel people to remember that real-life speed is what we really care about and that will always be a function of the load on and the capacity of every intermediate point between your screen and the provider of your download. Beg to differ. Bandwidth speed are usually expressed as bits per second (bps). Thus, the old dial-up modems I used started as 300 baud and went to 1200 baud then to 56K baud. In common usage, the baud rate of a *modem* is how many *bits* it can send or receive per second. Technically, baud is the number of times per second that the carrier signal shifts value - for example a 1200 bit-per-second modem actually runs at 300 baud, but it moves 4 bits per baud (4 x 300= 1200 bits per second). Adequacy depends on what you want to do with your computer and how patient you are personally. When I saw the previously posted search share results, I noticed that MS Search was paired with Live Search. On my WM cell, I started with Google search but found Live Search to be faster at getting a GPS lock and provided more info than did Google. With the move to WM 6.1, the GPS is fast for all apps that use location but I still use Live Search for the amount and usefulness of the info provided. YMMV 1. Yahoo's share is 148% of MS's share So why are so many people still using MS Search and who are these people? I have never seen anyone using MS Search. Where I worked, before retirement, we were using a CAC to access our workplace machines for over 6 years. A friend who works for a civilian agency lives with a system that has each machine dedicated to a specific user. If his machine goes down or he goes to another office/location, he cannot log on to a computer. With the CAC, we were theoretically able to log on to access any similarly protected, networked computer. A new account automatically created for the new user on that machine. This made the change-out of defective equipment very easy which minimized downtime for the employee. Obviously, this strategy works when all user data is available on networked shares or in the cloud. I've owned or used 2 Garmin Nuvi models and currently have a factory installed car system. In each case, you can instruct the unit to bias the routing based on preferences such as no toll roads, shortest time, shortest distance, easiest or most direct route. The Nuvi also supports pedestrian as well as vehicular. The 750/760 series is advertised as allowing for 12 custom routes (iirc) with as many as 10 inserted waypoints each. It provides turn-by-turn voice prompts for these as well. I also have a Moto Q9h which uses free apps like Windows Live Search, mYahoo, and Google maps in conjunction with the internal GPS chip. I can search for a restaurant, for example, pull up a phone number and get turn-by-turn directions. Sadly, the phone does not automatically update my location/directions as the trip progresses. In my area, Comcast uses Motorola devices. In our case, you can determine the specific model by looking on the underside of the DVR. The general rule is that Hollywood doesn't want you to be able to make digital copies of their content. So you can not copy files from the DVR but must play them (in real time) to an external recorder. Further, you need to be certain that you have compatible outputs from the DVR to the inputs of your recorder. In some cases, the DVR will have a coax out but not always and Comcast might disable some I/O ports in your local area to be Hollywood compliant. Your best bet is to experiment. In my case, I have a Moto 3412 which has a coax out that I run to a Pioneer DVDR. The cableco box feeds the TV through component (HD) connectors. When the d**n cableco box doesn't misbehave, I can make the scheduled recordings to it and then play back to the DVDR so for archiving. Note also that Comcast generally will NOT let you remove the cable connection from the box and still have it work. For example, you cannot take your cableco box to a vacation home to view stored content. Fun ain't it? If the desktop, you'll either need to tweak some settings or add the CGUYS to your whitelist. If on a server, you would need to contact your sysadmin. Spam filtering is more art than science. I've lost track of just how many filters our product, Xwall, uses, but it's designed for a multi-filter approach, as what one will miss, another will catch. It's false positive rate is 1%, but it's a balancing act as to how aggressive to be when filtering spam. Too aggressive and there are too many false positives, not aggressive enough and too much spam slips through. Comcast started using a filtering service that was terrible and blocked about a 1/3 of CGUYS messages. There was no notice nor any way to retrieve the blocked messages. That's a piss-poor and amateurish way of filtering spam. I moved by CGUYS sub to Gmail and the problem is solved. I give everyone my gmail address now. One of the ways the audio and the video can get out of sync is because the video is fed directly to the screen while the audio is routed through a home theater receiver (or the equivalent), for example. Better HTR's may have audio delay circuitry the user can invoke to try re-sync the two. I have not had personal experience with noticeable delays in my setup. Note also that the d**n cable boxes and the cablecos themselves are not immune from blame on these matters either. I didn't know about the issue but first suspected the MS security patch as the culprit since the MBP in the living room was still on line through same wireless router connection to Comcast after the XP box had been updated and restarted. I chose to roll back the patch and wait for a fix as I'm also doing for SP3. I'm running FF 2.0.0.14 on an XP desktop laptop and latest FF 2.x on a MBP. I've noticed issues with the gmail inbox the past week or 2. Instead of loading, it will churn for a few seconds until I close FF. I can load same pages in IE or Opera (or Safari on MBP) without incident. I recently helped a friend move his library from an old laptop to a new one without much drama. According many references on line, most people use the words interchangably but cite disc as the preferred British/European spelling possibly due to its Latin root discus and going back to the time when Phillips and Sony developed the compact disc. I have a Logitech bluetooth mouse for my MBP that uses rechargable AAA batteries. It comes with a USB cable to tether the mouse to the laptop for recharging when batteries get low. I meant to add. Many of those services that use these 800's numbers appear to be using boiler rooms from which multiple numbers are dialed simulatanously. You will often pick up and hear nothing since another line answered first and that child of God spilled his/her spam on that unfortunate person before he got your call. Call backs to these numbers often go to a non-working number or to a line that says it cannot accept incoming calls. How about that? You can find out about a lot of this by reading the comments people post at whocalled.us and at 800notes.com. A couple of weeks back, for example, I got a call from 123-456-7890 according to the caller id. Sheesh! Some thoughts. I found that one of the best solutions for dealing with unsolicited phone traffic is an answering machine with caller-id or a speaker. They rarely bother if the machine picks up first. If I hear a familiar voice say my name, I can pick-up or return the call. My caller-id shows that there are a LOT of 800 numbers calling during the day. You can often check them out with 800notes.com and with whocalled.us. I'm sure there are others. The doing business bit with the do not call registry is within the last 6 months, IIRC. You usually have to UNcheck the box that permits third party businesses from contacting you, phone or email. I now have Comcast digital voice and can block 12 numbers at a time. I keep an Excel sheet of numbers and dates they call. If one shows more than once or twice, it gets blocked. Groceries rotate their stock, I rotate 800 numbers on my blocked callers list. We have been using CAC's (Common Access Cards) for years. They work as a photo ID as well as for network authentication. Ours contain a mag a strip as well as a smart chip. BTW, we still have a regular password that changes every 120 (?) days for the website through which all our CAC's and the associated accounts are maintained. We sign onto the LAN using a PIN. I like when people assume that the only reason you have old tech in the office is just because you're too lazy to buy the latest and the greatest. Sometimes it's just because the best you can hope for is to replace 1/3 of your computers each year and maybe get one or 2 new printers or fax machines as they die off. Opera, the browser, has a built in tool for real time monitoring of your speeds. I have enjoyed success with an app called NetPerSec that gives real time up/down speeds. I especially like the free app NetStat Live from Analogx.com (same guy who created DSLReports.com aka Broadbandreports.com and Internettrafficreport.com). It includes many configuration options and gives traceroute and ping times for a designated website. It can provide data in bits or bytes and totals since last boot, for the current and past month and has a CPU utilization monitor. I prefer computer-based monitors over speedtest web sites since the results from the sites are only as good as the internet traffic at that instant. I am still on 10.4.10 and use Firefox almost exclusively after I found that Safari would not work the current Yahoo. YMMV Maybe I missed it, but I don't know why it's so important to get the new Safari (when you don't have Leopard). Is it really that much more desirable than Firefox (or iCab, or Camino)? I'm still using some nice antique browsers I downloaded from a site in New Zealand (or elsewhere in the antipodes--I forget exactly where), when I'm on a computer with Os 9. The author of the piece said it right for me as well. My computing days go back to CP/M and UNIX BSD via a dumb terminal. I resisted buying a Mac for the same basic reason cited, the machine users tended to be the sort I didn't want to associate with. Constantly denigrating the choices of others with terms like PeeCee Weenie and more. I did eventually buy a MBP about 18 months ago and use it daily but I don't worship any computer or OS. On another topic. Not buying an iPod is NOT sad. My 4G is 2 years old next month. It has been treated very well, never dropped, etc. However, it has started playing 10 seconds of sounds and skipping to the next track or freezing tighter than a drum. I've read postings in several forums from users of the non-iPhone units are seeing similar weirdness. My 2 year old iRiver unit gets much more use and still runs like a champ. The more sophisticated units often have self-test circuitry even if the unit is setup to be monitored by a connected computer; this may relate to the 2-4 AM thing. The other issue might be a failing battery. They do wear out. I have 2 TrippLite 1000VA units that have a real time read-out for the line voltage. They were about $100 the last time I saw one at Costco. YMMV I know UPS issues have been covered in the past. As many of you may know, I'm an advocate of using them. Recently (within the past 2 weeks!) we have begun having UPS issues: To wit: Sometimes, in the middle of the night (2 am - 4 am), two of our UPS's begin to click / beep. Not sound an alarm, mind you, just to click / beep quietly in a rhythmic pattern. I cannot find reference to what this might mean, though I think it means that the circuit being used is browning out power and the UPS is making up the missing power. Last night this happened at about 11 pm!!! Eventually, the UPS's (we have many, but only two are involved in this situation) begin to blare. Then everything shuts down and they continue to blare until reset and recharged. This is a very frustrating situation as it only affects two of our 4 UPS units (all in the same room, but possibly on separate circuits). It is also happening to a neighbor! Same scenario. Only our UPS's are far enough away that they don't wake us. Hers, sadly, wakes her when it begins to scream. (Please don't ask about the 2 am - 4 am thing. I sometimes work late into the night/morning.) We can tell when this scenario has occurred because a telephone answering machine ceases to work, and because my iMac is turned off. There are two UPS units involved. One has only the telephone answering machine plugged into its battery back-up sockets, and the other has only my iMac connected to its battery back-up sockets. Dedicated UPS's if you will. It is unclear if these are on the same circuit breaker or not. It's also weird that sometimes one of the UPS's is affected, and sometimes both of them are affected at the same time. I have searched for references to sounds made by APC UPS units without success. These units are all relatively new (a higher capacity one was purchased last week for my computer in the hope that would help resolve the problem with my computer shutting down, but to no avail), and their batteries should be in good condition. I followed the cell phone/spam disucssions with interest since about 3 years ago, I began receiving spam call/robot calls from the public school system telling me that my child could not attend without the propoer vacinations 3 problems: I have no school age children, I don't live in that district, and the message provded no contact information to tell them to stop. For a time, the calls were weekly or even daily. I searched for phone numbers for the school district but could never find the correct office. Eventually, last Spring, I was given a number to call. I could only leave a voice message and never got a call back but these robot calls appear to have stopped ... wait, I'd better check my phone good, no missed calls ... so far ... I like NOD32 on my current desktop. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130906-c,securitysoftware/article.html It has a small footprint, works right out of box, it costs about $30 annually, you get new def files several times a day. I use AVG Free on my Dell laptop and my PII-800 machine. My MBP doesn't have an AV program. YMMV A coworker of mine just bought a new Dell computer (with Vista) and her free Norton Anti-Virus (spyware blocker etc) has expired. She turned to me to ask me if she should renew it or get something else and if so what. I told her I couldn't answer it because as she knows I'm a Mac man and that would be a different answer. I however told her that I would check with the list. What do you recommend? It is a family computer. They are a family of 3. Their son is about 12. My 60GB 4G iPod has been exhibiting increasingly strange behavior. I had thought the nearly 2 yo device was failing but, after viewing pages on iLounge and on the Apple forums, I am beginning to suspect that recent iTunes updates may be breaking the older units ... or maybe it's just a coincidence h? YMMV The iPhone, iPod Touch and other new iPods are driving these updates. To update the software for any of these requires new iTunes software. One update, e.g., included ringtones for the iPhone and there's another one coming this month that will allow the iPhone to access the iTunes store wirelessly (as the iPod Touch does now). nearly 2 years when I got my 4G iPod, I picked a $10/$20 mini-digital camera case (at Best Buy, IIRC) with velcro closure and a velcro belt loop. It also has a small pouch on on front under main flap where I keep my ear buds. It has padding so the little sucker has been safe so far. My experience comes from getting tired of Verizon. I used my cell for any toll calls and had a very limited service for 20-30 local calls a month (for my Tivo). They kept trying to nickle and dime me with $2-3 increases with no added benefit to me. I switched to triple play; already having had HSI and DTV. Now I have full featured, unlimited phone service too. My total bill (for 2 years at least) is less than what I had been paying for HSI DTV alone (by about $5) and I no longer pay the extra $20+ a month to Verizon. From what I found on the pricing, the phone service should go from $33/month to about $40 at the end of the promotion (taxes and fees extra). For those who might like to use an online resource for listings, I recommend www.titantv.com and www.zap2it.com. They each are customizable for your local carrier and give you about 7 days of programming. If you have multiple outlets, TitanTV is better since you can setup a tab/page for each such as 1 for digital cable, 1 for directv, and 1 for OTA/analog. Titan can also be customized to default to a time of day. Mine is set for prime time, 7PM - 11PM. Both services provide synopses of shows, cast lists, whether first run or repeat, and future air dates as well as info like whether it is HD or in DTD/DD 5.1. BTW, the Tivo listings give about 14 days of programming information and thinking of it as a substitute VCR is liking thinking broadband is the same as dial up. I had a cheap laser printer at home but decided to get a color ink jet after getting a digital camera. I've had very good luck luck with a Canon Proxima (the (IP5000) since I had been concerned about the Epsons; viewed as good/great at the beginning but problematic if not used regularly, clogged heads, etc. I do much of my B/W printing at work ... doesn't everyone? I was really torn since only the Epsons (at the time) had several units that could print on a CD/DVD. I hand label my discs anyway so it hasn't been a problem G.I vote for the Canons. What three-finger command are you talking about? My XP Pro desktop at home is locked but running 24/7. I merely click on my USERID icon and enter the password. My work machine uses a CAC. Once again no three-finger command. To power up any of these machines, including my MBP, I depress the power button and enter my credentials at the login screens. I installed a WD 500 GB drive (My Book Premium @ $230 MSRP) that came with an automated backup program. I designate which folders and times and it performs incremental or full backups. No sweat. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=224 Our work machines are configured to store all our docs on a U:Drive which is all well and good as well as the network traffic isn't heavy and the LAN hasn't died then you are SOL. I've seen the difference in load and save times with LAN storage, I prefer local storage with regular backups to the LAN. YMMV OS X is not, I think to blame for an ill-placed power button. My G5's power button is on the front of the desktop chassis. My G4 Powerbook's power button is to the right of the keyboard. The eMac, a reduced cost iMac, is out of production. I have not visited Apple recently - are the power buttons hard to find on the current models? Personally, I despise the three-finger command required to start up (or wake up) Windows computers. I was at a geek gathering this weekend. One fellow told us of a poor soul who only used WEP to secure his wireless network and someone cracked it and used his connection to download child porn. The upshot was that the owner of network was sentenced to 5 years per image. The object lesson is that WEP can be cracked with relative ease these days by monitoring packet traffic. Tivo and other DVRs get their scheduling information from services like Tribune. If the programmer doesn't give them updating information, then these services will not have it either. I like to check sites like Titantv and Zap2it for my regular tv guide info. My Tivo makes daily calls for scheduling data but ... see above. YMMV I have TIVO and like it immensely. But it does have one glitch I found out this weekend. OK, I've been reading this thread with amusement and decided to add my $0.01 from experience. I have a can of compressed air and decided to dust my machine a while back. I was very careful to use short bursts of air to avoid condensation. I finished by using a ever so slightly moist rag to wipe some surfaces inside and out and carefully closed the case and went back to work. A few days later, I needed to burn a disc but my drive wouldn't recognize the blank so I opened the case to try to see what might be loose, etc. Seeing nothing, it finally hit me what probably happened. I pulled out a CD drive cleaning disc and ran it on my burner. Sure enough, some of that chased dust had managed to work its way inside to coat the lens on the burner. Caveat!
