Have any of you done this? Is it practical?

Assuming you mean the barlines are the same in all parts, then yes, I've
done it frequently. My piece "Under the Aurora" for clarinet and string
quartet uses places of simultaneous 7/8, 6/8, 5/8 and 4/4, and "Air" for
harp and percussion has areas of 12/8, 13/8, 15/8 and 17/8.

The only caveat for me is that (at least as of Finale 25), hairpins do
not always behave correctly (jump around horizontally).

Thank you, Jan.

I had an old backup of my various fonts and dragged them into the fonts
folder. They are present again, but some of the font files are 20 years old.
Since dragging them back from my archive, the fonts now work (including
character 142).

Meanwhile, I followed the instructions you provided (the fonts were already in
the MacSymbolFonts.txt, including special versions of fonts that I developed).
After doing all this, the Windows font installers (either MMFonts.msi and
MMFont_Win.exe) still fail ('ended prematurely' and 'might not have installed
correctly', respectively).

I also ran, as I had said, the Finale installer itself -- both the complete
program and with only the font package boxes checked. If I remove the old
fonts to be sure the package installs the new ones, it does not install any
the Finale fonts. I have to drag them back.

Which puts me back at: where do I get the fonts without the installer to be
sure I have the latest, correct versions?

Thanks,
Dennis

[Finale] Font mess

2019-04-14 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

I had a problem accessing some characters in Finale 25/Windows 10, and decided
to reinstall the Finale fonts in case one of the characters was damaged
(specifically 142, the "r", which wasn't showing up in Finale or other apps).

I followed the instructions on the Finale site, just to be sure, and deleted
all Finale fonts from the font folder as instructed, rebooted, and ran their
font installer. The installer fails.

So I reinstalled the full Finale package -- same issue. None of the fonts
appear.

Is there a font package that I can download and install by hand? I'm not
finding anything but the msi installer on the Finale site.

Deadlines, of course. :(

[Finale] Disappearing parts

2019-04-01 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

I have an issue that's a little tricky to explain.

This weekend I had to go back to a flute/piano score and make a fix where
Finale had twice placed incorrect block rests in the flute part: there were
two block rests (17+2) ignoring 11 measures of notes at the start of the first
movement and two block rests (26+8) ignoring 24 measures of notes at the start
of the third movement.

The score was done in Finale 25.4.1.152 (Windows 10) on 10/31/17.

I opened the file in Finale 25.5.0.290 to find there was no flute part present
at all in the parts menu, nor were any parts present in the "manage parts"
dialog. The only thing in the "manage parts" dialog was the title of the
piece.

However, my properly formatted flute and piano parts *could* be accessed using
[ctl+alt+.]

The program had kept the parts but erased their usual access modes. Since I
didn't trust the program to save things properly, I created new parts (which
destroyed the layout, the separator pages between the movements, and the title
page). Now re-opening the file properly shows all the parts.

I'm wondering what might have caused the assignment of a block rests in place
of notes, and if it might be related to losing the presence of parts.

I keep numbered backups. #308 was where the parts were first created, and #321
was the last. 308-321 were done on the same day without closing the program,
so if it was some sort of bug, it carried through to when I re-opened and
saved the file as #322 this weekend.

Has anyone come across something like this?

Thanks,
Dennis

It's always bothered me. I don't think this has ever been changed (since I
started with 2.1 for Windows in 1993). I think the frame has always been a
fixed size.

Sometimes I have high and low notes to enter, and the staves go out of the
frame.

Also, when dragging rests between staves, the grid disappears so placement
sometimes requires several tries.

Finally -- and this has persisted through a dozen different video systems, so
I doubt it's video-driver related -- when entering or adjusting notes that
have many ledger lines, the ledger lines go increasingly out of sync with the
cursor.

Speedy is my default entry method, and I've learned to live with this, albeit
unhappily.

[Finale] Standalone Aria Player FYI

2019-03-04 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

I posted this on Facebook, but for others of my friends who sometimes use the
standalone Aria Player outside Finale (Windows version): If it won't launch,
check the logs. I spent hours today trying to find the problem and sent a help
request to MakeMusic (no response yet).

By reading the logs, I found that the standalone Aria Player doesn't play well
with the Elgato USB video capture hardware that I'm using. It would place an
error in the logs ("failed PaWasapi_Initialize error [-9986|Internal PortAudio
error]"), and then proceed to enumerate audio devices repeatedly until it
consumed all available computer memory. Once the Elgato unit was unplugged, it
launched. Since no other programs were affected by the presence of the Elgato
(including Aria Player running within Finale itself), it appears to be a bug
in the standalone version.

So if you have a standalone Aria Player that won't launch, check the logs for
a failed device initialization.

I thoroughly agree. I've used probably a dozen PDF drivers by now, and this
has been rock solid and makes perfect (and 'tidy') documents from Finale.

If you have a serious local print shop, they'll likely have a professional
paper cutter that can trim 500-1000 sheets at a time to your 9x12 size from
larger paper that you like to work with.

Make sure you're not saving Midi volume data with your controller.

Try this:

Go into the Midi tool (not the Midi/Audio menu).
Dismiss the human playback message that comes up.
>From the Midi Tool menu, select "Edit Key Velocities".
Select the entire document (CTL-A on Windows).
>From the Midi Tool menu, choose "Clear".

Now try playback.

If it works, you may have old Midi data in there, or you may have recorded the
velocities from your Midi keyboard.

Thanks, David.

Just to update: When I ran Finale a fourth time (immediately after your post),
I did not get the error message. I checked a file, then closed and re-opened
Finale, and the message came up again. This time I disabled WASAPI and
restarted. All is well since.

However, other things are odd in opening a Finale 2014.5 file: timpani rolls
no longer worked until I went into human playback, changed the timpani info,
and then reset it to the original state; not all expressions are respected
(like arco) unless I move them a beat earlier in the score; the fermata is no
longer played at all; and I still can't save an audio file (it gets stuck at
00:00) with 100% of one CPU being used (I have to save the score in two parts
and re-assemble them in Audition).

However, a previous problem that no one had an answer to here (why a cluster
of strings would drop out) has gone away.

I need to create a reliable version of this orchestral piece because it's
being used for a ballet (since no orchestra is actually going to play it
unless I win the lottery), and the unpredictable nature of playback/export is
crazy.

Okay. I will try this. I just didn't want it disabling a core component for
other software.

So does this mean that Finale's crash is only related to its own (non-)use of
WASAPI? I ran another dozen pieces of audio software, and none are using
WASAPI. In fact, only one (Audacity) even has it as an option.

Odd situation, it seems, since this is the latest Microsoft protocol and has

[Finale] Glissando issues

2017-06-27 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

Finale 2014.5 Windows, but this problem has occurred in earlier versions.
Using Garritan via Aria player (to get convolution plugin and other controls).

Slow glissandi sometimes work, sometimes don't (the first note isn't played,
and so neither is the second note). Subsequent notes on that instrument may or
may not work at all (gliss or not). Sometimes notes many measures later (after
rests) in the same instrument simply won't play if a glissando has preceded
it. Sometimes tied notes later on (after rests) will "untie" and no notes will
play. This all depends on where I start playing. If I start at a measure after
the glissandi, all the notes play correctly. If I start before them, various
notes fail.

It's hard to give a better description of this. Anybody have an idea about
this failure and how to make glissandi work every time?

This does NOT work for these files. The system32 directory seems to be
unusually privileged so that Finale files (and perhaps other user data files)
cannot be seen there inside the usual explorer window. The first time I
encountered it, I opened explorer (which is set to show everything) and the
files were absent from system32.

These files DO appear in the open dialog, however, where drag-and-drop is
normal. They also DO appear in the command window.

I've yet to figure out this behavior, which in my experience has only happened
with Finale's recent versions.

Windows?

Occasionally when I'm using Finale 2014.5, it quietly switches the file saving
to the /windows/system32 folder, where Finale can open them but they can't
otherwise be seen. (None of my default folders are set to this, so I'm not
sure why it happens.)

I've found the only way to fix this (aside from being careful that Finale
doesn't do this to you in the first place) is to, during the open dialog, drag
the files elsewhere.

[Finale] "back-curve" slur thickness (repost)

2017-04-28 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Reposting this as I saw no responses and wondered if it was missed, or there

Hi all,

Finale 2014.5 Windows.

A client wants the 'backwards curve' of a slur also to increase in thickness,
as if it were continuing forward. Finale shrinks the thickness of the slur as
it moves backwards.

There doesn't seem to be a way to change this in the dialog.

Also, the number of control points has remained the same, and this client
would like flat slurs. Has Finale 25 improved this?

I have *never* cracked this. The old maps worked as long as you didn't need
anything outside General MIDI percussion, but they worked out of the box.

But I gave up when VSTs were provided. The default audio output was either
silent or unrelated to what was listed. Transposition is disabled (I often
want to move one instrument into another position). Converting old scores was
even worse, with notes splattered everywhere with endless ledger lines.

I simply couldn't figure it out. There was somebody's external tutorial that
made it worse. I've never gotten Finale to output the sounds I ask for -- and
seriously, I've worked with MIDI since the hardware days of the early 1980s.
I've developed sets of SoundFonts, have extensive audio sample libraries, etc.

But with Finale, the lightbulb has never come on for assigning the sound I
want to output. Finale is the only sequencer that makes no sense to me.

It would be really great if Finale shipped with default percussion output that
automatically matched the VSTs provided, or, even better, if they would switch
to the system other programs use: drag this sound from this library and drop
it on this line or space. Done.

I also tried using tracking, with the rest and the staff in the expression

but then I have to use baseline shift to place the rest correctly.
Unfortunately, baseline shift seems to wipe out any effect of the tracking

A very serious error in observation on my part. I usually quote a large job by
looking at the score, and only by hour on short(ish) pieces that require a new
setup, etc. This is the third score I've done for this composer -- and it has
been a disaster. The working score was a photocopy of a photocopy of a pencil
manuscript (the original was lost in a fire). That was hard enough, but I
didn't realize that the composer was going to insist on every non-standard and
difficult action that have no purpose other than that tiring 1970s-style
cleverness (like those notes that cross staves, a behavior which occupies
about 90% of the score).

My income has been less than minimum wage on this, and it's still not done. :(
Fortunately, I have given up client engraving, and this is my last leftover
score.

Re: [Finale] Break stem

2017-02-19 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
I figured out a visual way to break the stem at the rest.

Above rest: add a note and change the notehead to a blank. Remove the
remaining notes that extend below the rest. The stem remains.
Below rest: remove the notes and add the notes in a different layer as a
quarter note. Move the quarter note below the rest and change its stem length.

Still cleanup to do in this measure, and seven more measures of it to go with
even more rests:

Awful solution. Anybody have a better way?

[Finale] Break stem

Hi all,

Finale 2014.5, Windows 10

Any idea how to break a stem?

Client wants a stem to pass through a rest (8th, 16th, 32nd), visually
breaking the stem as it does so.

I've tried creating a rest character with an opaque background, but it also
obscures the staff lines.

Thanks,
Dennis

PS: If any masochist wants to take this project over from me, please email.
It's 4 pianos, 90 pages, 11x17 landscape, with tons of little adjustments and
changes because the composer's notation is idiosyncratic and often wrong, and
he refuses to change it. There's some money left on the composer's tab.

Got it. All the copying of layers has to be done *before* converting the

In 24 years I have never used the mirror tool. Thanks for the introduction!
But...

...though it does copy and convert correctly, it only does it in Layer 1. If I
switch to layer 2 and choose 'show active layer only' (in order to copy to the
next layer for the piano reduction), it won't drag and mirror. Nothing happens
at all. Even if I turn off 'show active layer only', nothing happens. If I
drag to another staff it's fine, but I'm still seem stuck with the problem of
creating a piano reduction of these overfilled measures.

Anything else possible?

[Finale] Copying overfilled measures

2017-02-02 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

There was a solution to this, I think, but I can't remember it.

I have a score with a number of 'overfilled' measures (invisible barlines,
notes that rhythmically overlap -- for example, a whole note on the last
quarter note, and the next bar with three hidden quarter-note rests). These
overfilled measures are different from part to part.

What I'm doing is creating a piano reduction, and to do that I need to copy
the measures exactly to staves below. (I'll later use layer visibility to
merge two sets of notes onto one staff -- but I haven't gotten that far yet!)

When these measures are copied (either dragged or CTL-C/CTL-V), they shift the
entire score to the right by the amount of the overfilled measures.

I've tried using the Edit Filter with all bar features turned off. The
Patterson mass-copy plugin doesn't copy the notes.

How do I keep Finale from rebarring these copied sections?

Thanks,
Dennis

[Finale] Audio stutter plus Re: Stopped saving audio

Thanks for the confirmation of the issue. I now have a composing version of
the current part of the piece and a full version (where I paste into place
each new portion).

To create playback versions, I split in half the full version after edits are
made, and save the audio.

Now one MORE question on audio. Is this a known issue? In places with long
tuplet notes (such as 2 whole in a bar of 9/4), the long notes begin to
stutter and disappear, coming back only with a new phrase after a rest. The
upper parts sometimes overlap the (invisible) barlines, and also have many
tuplets and removed stems to create a melisma. This is in playback and saved
audio.

Heading off for a long teaching day, so will check back tonight if anyone has
advice.

Re: [Finale] Stopped saving audio

2017-01-22 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Thanks, Christopher. I checked the old Finale forums, and found only mention
of it (right up until the end of the forums) but no solutions.

It's the first time I remember encountering it myself (which means little,
since I'm old enough to forget most things), but long pieces have previously
exported just fine -- a massive 40-minute orchestral piece with simultaneous
time sigs, etc., for example, didn't fight back.

This score was fine up to measure #627. Export broke when I added new music
(and measure stacks) up to #660.

73% is as far as it reports during playback, too, but that works fine.

I changed nothing -- I only added to the score. If I make a separate copy and
delete the first half of the piece, it saves the second half fine.

[Finale] Stopped saving audio

2017-01-21 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

Win10 Pro 64-bit, Finale 2014.5.

I've been working on a piece, and suddenly Finale is unable to export audio.
The piece is 46 minutes, and up until about 45 minutes previous files exported
fine. It will play back to the end, but not export.

When I export audio, the box comes up indicating 'processing'. It gets to 73%
(hairpins) and the box closes. One of the CPUs is at nearly 100%, the same it
presents when playing the file. The internal playback process is stuck
somewhere because I've left it for an hour just to see, and it acts as if it's
in playback mode (stop button active). A file is created with an empty RIFF
wave (RIFF$ WAVEfmt D¬ ± data).

Yes, I've restarted Finale, rebooted the computer, and gone back to previous
files that do save.

Any idea how to get audio export back? Is there an upper limit (maybe 45
minutes)?

Thanks,
Dennis

Thanks to you and Christopher. I don't know why they appeared suddenly. I only
use playback for proofing, and didn't commit the playback to the file.

Next time it happens I'll check to see if I invoked anything that made them

[Finale] Grey rectangles appear

2017-01-17 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

I'm working on a score, and suddenly all places (and only places) with
tremolo/roll articulations had fuzzy grey rectangles superimposed on the
measures.

Data check didn't fix them, nor removing and replacing the tremolo symbol.

When I viewed the area at 800%, I found that Finale had created a mass of
hidden 128th notes in any measure with a tremolo/roll.

Fortunately I save my work under a new name every few minutes, so I only had
to rebuild a few measures.

Any ideas what this is -- and if it appears again, how to get rid of it
without going to older backups?

Thanks,
Dennis

Where are you seeing this? I have smart shape options for 8 and 15
(where I got rid of the va and vb), but it has no continuation options. And
8 and 15 aren't in the custom line dialogs. (Finale 2014.5)

Chuck,

His are just "8-" and "15-" (above or below). The font is
Revere (my revised version for Finale).

I thought of a custom shape, but it still means replacing them all. Guess I'm
gonna have to do that anyway.

Convincing him he's wrong? Oh, man, I have SO many places in this score where
I wish I could do that... he wants "wraparound" slurs, too, with flat tops
(from bass clef, wrapping up around treble clef, and back to bass clef --
kinda looking like a chef's toque). That's so far totally out of the question
-- too few nodes on Finale slurs. And huge columns of stems that go from 15vb
to 15ma. And completely phrased-based note values -- parens are beams:
q••,e•,e•,e•,(16•,16•),(16,16+16•,16),16•,(16•+16),(16,16•,16•) against
q,(e•,16),(e,e),(16,e,16),(16,32,16,32),(32,32,e,32,32),(32,16•),(16,32,32),(32,32,16),(32,32,16).
And, and, and... MY LAST CLIENT.

Hi all,

A client has decided he wants all the parentheses removed from 8va and 8vb

don't seem to find either a smart shape option or other native way or plugin
to do this without re-entering each 8va and 8vb separately on each page.

Anybody?

I wonder how applicable this pulse division is today? If bar demarcations are
moving regularly among 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, etc., then the expectation of 6/4 as
2/q• or 6/8 as 2/e• vanishes, doesn't it?

If the score is a little more old school and only using /4 divisions, then
maybe the confusion is present, and the q=q note is worth noting.

Though I've seen it done, alternating notations of 4/4 and 3/2 while keeping
the quarter-note pulse the same never made sense to me. I would be expecting
the conductor to switch to /2 pulses.

I think the /8 triple divisions (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15) have always been a
special case.

I just tried this. Maybe you did this already. Finale 2014.5, Windows.

I double-clicked in scroll view to add a new staff AT THE BOTTOM. I switched
to page view (where I have no auto-updating of anything) and the news staff
was off the page as expected.

I selected that staff by clicking to the left of it, then 'hide'. All of the
new staff occurrences disappeared.

Next I switched to the selection tool, and selected all the measure stacks on
one page by double-clicking the first measure and shift-clicking the last
measure. Then I switched to the staff tool and 'unhide'.

The new staff reappeared on just that page, at the bottom.

Then I chose 'reorder staves' and moved it up.

The rest of the score remained unaffected.

Does that do what you want?

That only changes the rubber bands. I mean the *shape* won't hold its position
or refuses to move as requested. It prefers to go to a beat position. This
only happens in unusual time signatures or independent time signatures. But
it's a real bear because there are times when the hairpin simply can't be
positioned *at all* on a given staff -- it's always overruled.

This is buggy in anything but standard time signatures. I've had to attach
hairpins to different lines so they wouldn't re-attach themselves to a beat
that I don't want. Same goes for text expressions. I love the 'rubber band'
attachment, but I wish that, once overruled by hand-adjustment, it would no

Unless I'm missing something, I have never had luck with these. I have tried
creating stretchable shapes as well as using standard hairpins and placing the
circle. The stretchable ones don't stay attached to the circle. And the
standard ones all have to be tweaked in page view in huge magnification --
otherwise they don't end up with the circle in the right place in the final
PDFs.

Any more automated solution is welcome here, too!

You didn't mention the Score Manager. I set all my volumes and pans there, and
that seems to work -- things like alto flute seem loud, but regular flute
doesn't. The initial samples definitely seem to be at unrealistic volumes, but
adjusting those in Score Manager appears to tame them for me. And, of course,
using the pan controls is really important to make some sense of the
soundstage you're making. I never use any of the other views, and balances are
not bad. I suppose it depends on how much accurate detail you want in your

Hi all,

Regarding this image:

The feathered beam leaves stems behind when the last note is in the upper clef.

I've tried what I can think of, including the beam stem adjustment tool (which
moves the stems away from the bottom beam, but leaves those upper stem bits
sitting there).

Is there some way of getting rid of those stems? Other than an opaque shape?

Re: [Finale] Dorico?

2016-10-25 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
David,

Thanks for the info -- though as you might expect, I don't find this
comforting. I have Finale's dual-install option (one desktop, one laptop) not
only for emergencies, but also when I'm on the road, including teaching.
That's where the Steinberg tether collapses for me. No way I'm carrying around
a precious dongle, which is required to make Dorico portable. These things
disappear in seconds in a school situation, "just because". I've even had my
flexible rollup keyboard stolen -- from my shared office.

So two installs are pretty much essential. I can accept activation (though I
prefer to know that there's an escrowed key system outside a manufacturer's
control), but never Steinberg's level of tether. No product can be *that*
good.

Finale it is for now!

2016-10-22 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Just a warning that Dorico uses Steinberg's awful protection system: either a
hardware dongle or a dongle-free download option that allows only one install.

I will never put my work into the hands of this kind of system. I've watched
others with dongles see deadlines pass waiting for a replacement for a failed
dongle. And even the dongle-free system, without a second install, means any
failure that requires using a backup computer is impossible.

I know some people have accepted this kind of corporate control of their work,
but I'm not one of them. I've campaigned against this nonsense for years. I'm
sorry Dorico is infected with it, because it appears that otherwise I'd try
using it.

I'll stay with Finale's dongle-free, two-computer authorization.

I didn't see any other responses. You're on Finale 2008. Finale would really
choke if you had lots of fonts installed. That's still the case (I'm on
2014.5), and almost as bad (hard to tell as I have a faster computer). It's
like Finale goes through the whole font list every time you type a letter.

For me, Finale playback goes silent every time I export audio (and the
exported audio is fine), requiring a Finale restart. It might go back to a
problem someone else was having -- that Finale's playback engine defaults to a
specific setting different from my system default. Since other audio programs
work fine while Finale is running, it seems to point to Finale as the culprit.

Not an answer for you, but there's something up with playback in this version.
I'm having a playback problem on 2014.5 Windows, too. It works fine until I
export an audio file. Then, to get sound again, I have to restart Finale.

I haven't seen your problem, but I have a different (new) problem with the
audio (F2014.5/Win10). After exporting an audio file, Finale will no longer
play audio (no audio on Speedy entry and no playback, including no cursor
movement). Resetting the Midi driver has no effect. I have to restart the
program to restore audio. Since I'm doing dozens of very short demo bits in a
row (enter, print, export audio), this is pretty annoying.

Yes, the bass flute works (no double barlines here, though; probably in the
preferences somewhere), but the contrabass flute apparently doesn't exist
except as a name in the list.

Don't know where this list is. Is this the SQLite database file that jef

It used to be an extensive XML file. I edited it to add an alto flute back
when there wasn't one available. It required creating a custom soundfont (sfz)
file for the instrument (I have an soundfont editor, and based it on a
standard flute).

Now it's GIFFinstruments.txt (user settings) combined with Instruments for
Finale.bank.xml (in the Garritan program entry) and probably other things.
Since every Finale version recreates this file, it's a pain to find and edit
these by hand.

Unpleasant, but it displays correctly. The playback problem remains, though,
especially with instrument changes (studio view volume has no effect, either).

Also, there's no E-flat flute in the instrument list, which I just discovered
when trying to switch to it. I don't see an instrument definition list where I
can add this.

Somehow I never found value in the Score Manager. :(

[Finale] Contrabass flute, instrument levels.

2016-09-03 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

Doing a score with required demo.

1.
What am I missing in trying to create a treble-clef-reading contrabass flute
that plays back?

When I choose "contrabass flute" in a mid-score instrument change, it renders
it in bass clef. Contrabass flute reads treble clef.

It also won't play in any clef (there's no Garritan contrabass flute). I can
substitute contrabassoon, but that only helps playback, not display. I've
tried a 2-octave transposition staff style using the SoftSynth, but that's
silent and doesn't change the clef as requested (transposition, set to clef).
Mid-score instrument change overrides staff style?

2.
Volume levels of instrument changes don't seem to respect dynamic marking
during mid-score instrument changes.

Thanks much. That's it. Not exactly as convenient as the reverse ('create

Remember ETF files? They were in ASCII and you could actually hunt down the
errors and fix them. Or sometimes just a save to ETF followed by open from ETF
fixed the errors. I had a huge file (some 1,100 measures) back in the 1990s
that suddenly was eating itself. I saved it as ETF, and reloading it fixed it.
I'm not sure XML is quite as reliable as ETF was in terms of saving exactly
what Finale has created.

[Finale] Stray things on PDF that I can't find

2016-02-12 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

Here's an image comparing export-to-PDF vs. print-to-PDF.

The export has those stray "3" characters at the bottom of page 2. I can't
locate them in the Finale file. They appear to be slightly larger versions of
the "3" that I use for tuplets.

I've zoomed out in both page and scroll view to see if they were scattered
somewhere way out of view. No luck.

Any clues on how to find them? And why they might only appear in a Finale
export-to-PDF and not the print-to-PDF? They don't appear on other files that
use the same template.
