Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS 1.0 in the news...

2006-07-08 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hi,

DRDOS has DPMI. I assume FD could if it doesn't.

What is the exact technical reason you can't start WfW 3.11 from
FreeDOS? Is it the DPMI thing or something else?

I haven't looked much into this topic, but it cannot be the DPMI, as
when you run WIN then Microsoft's nice extender WIN386.EXE or if you
prefer VMM32.VXD (I've always loved the Win95 beta name, DOS386.EXE)
starts.

I guess there's a good reason why MS-DOS responds to the DOS386.EXE
start broadcast (whereas FreeDOS doesn't).

For what this is worth, I am able to get FreeDOS with the Q stuff to run
on newer MBs - AMD 64 -that fail with DRDOS.

Yes, FreeDOS is great on modern hardware.

   They don't like EMM386; DR
  or FD.

Yes, I've posted at great length about this in the past. I use UMBPCI at
 the moment.

64 bit is a bit of a jump, but if you will settle for 32 bit - for now -
I think we did most of that, it's called OS/2,

Ah OK! Maybe it's time to look again at OS/2.

Well, OS/2 was promoted as better DOS than DOS, but I don't think
OS/2 is so well documented as to start Free-OS/2 (nice and interesting
attempt if you do :))

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS, Borland's current status and Borland's DOS software

2006-07-09 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hi Arkady,

TurboPascal is by far the most used Pascal dialect, even if not
standarized (and FreePascal followed the good work, much ahead of the
more standard GPC).
In fact, both FreePascal and Delphi has been ported to Linux (and
other platforms) so that you can create platform-independent apps (or
at least Borland say so, I have never tried that), so the language
itself is not that platform dependent (another story are the
libraries, but there's even a FreePascal's DOS unit in Linux).
Well, I don't expect an spectacular evolution in any 16-bit product
(except for FreeDOS), and we should be happy if OpenWatcom does not
give up the 16-bit line, but back to TP, one wouldn't be locked if you
come across one bug that affects you.

Issue is, that TP is a Pascal dialect, nobody (including standards)
compatible and nowhere standardized. This (missing standards and
compatibility with standards) is especially important, because TP is highly
tied to DOS (and slightly to 16-bit Windows) platform and, thus,
non-portable to newer platforms. I think, this very highly decreases
perspectives of TP (_if_ it will be released as free open-source) to evolve.
If you not expect evolving, then why you need sources?

2006-07-09 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hi Arkady,

Here I am sending to you the links to the binary utilities, (both exec
and source) with the latest versions. Both have accompaining
information files.

Some KEYB documentation may deem a bit incomplete, the ability for
hot switching layouts and/or codepages (for example in Russian to
skip from Latin to Cyrilic alphabets) (and also the support for
Japanese keyboards) made things a bit more complex, and I know that
the KEYB data files documentation is definitely to be improved.

For the data files (that is, codepage files for DISPLAY, layout files
for KEYB), I let this to Henrique, who knows better than me.

Finally, I simply warn that DISPLAY 0.13 (forthcomming soon) has a
hard source re-structure and some rewrite, so if you plan to read
sources, I'd recommend to wait.

2006/7/24, Jim Hall [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I've been doing a little tinkering with the web site design. By the
time we finally make our 1.0 release, I figured FreeDOS should have a
somewhat sharper-looking web page. Bob Stammers and I have been
discussing a new look off-list, and I think it's pretty much ready.

If you would like a peek at the new design, it's at:
 http://www.freedos.org/index2.php?css=http://hallx049.oit.umn.edu/temp/fd/005.css

It has a modern appearance: clean, simple. I hope it's not too boring.
I'm open to final tweaks before this new version goes live, later this week.

This is just the first in several goals. I also want to re-do the main
page to fix two other things:

 1. Clean up the linkList.

At first pass, I'll need to make my best effort to organize things as
best I can, and later we'll try to do a kind of card sort exercise if
I can gather enough volunteers. At the least, I want to have links
grouped for first-time / general users and for developers. How I order
the links, I haven't decided. But I may re-use links in both sections
... that might be okay if I keep the link names the same (otherwise, it
would get confusing.) I'll also rename some link text from what we have
now. At a top-level, the headers will probably be grouped into two
 sections:

 Using FreeDOS
link
link
link
 Developers
link
link
link

 2. Different content on the main page.

For as long as I can remember, the FreeDOS front page has contained a
list of news items. That was appropriate when we were a bunch of
developers, but it's not helpful to users who aren't familiar with DOS.
So I'll likely move the news items to a developers page, or
something. The front page will be filled with a few paragraphs lifted
from About, and a few paragraphs lifted from (perhaps) Download and
other parts of the site. Not sure how I'll re-write that content. But
the key is, everything a new user needs to know about FreeDOS should be
 located on the front page.

[Freedos-user] DISPLAY 0.13b (small patch) ready

2006-08-10 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hi all,

I thereby announce DISPLAY 0.13b, a small patch over DISPLAY 0.13. Changes:
- The DR-FONT bug notified by John Elliot
- There was a bug with the CGA specific code
- The double-SELECT bug found by John Elliot is fixed too (it was a
variable announcing to hold words were they were bytes, sorry for not
removing the comment!)
- Some code is simplified in the PREPARE routines
- The documentation for how to contribute code for other hardware is
updated too, according to the changes in DISPLAY 0.13

The last documentation refers to the fact that you can now write
hardware-specific codepage management routines easily. You basically
write how big you need your buffer, how to select a hardwired or a
software buffer, and how to read if your hardware comes in a strange
format in a CPI file. The rest (commandline, buffering, hot-codepage
swap, monitoring, multiplexer and [pseudo-]IOCTL,...) are generic.

A popular request by many people is to have a DISPLAY /? option, but I
am reluctant to do it, as there is very little more to DISPLAY.SYS,
where it does not make sense.

However, I maintain and document well the HELP file, so
FASTHELP DISPLAY should be your friend
(Oops! I should document HTML-Help too).

The original location is at (or use a mirror):

Acknowledgements: MANY thanks to many people that helped out within
all the projects (Matthias Paul, Axel Frinke, Jim Hall (for FreeDOS),
Dietmar Höhmann, T. Kabe), and in this release, very special to Eric

As I wish to embrace other FreeDOS projects, there will be a small
evolution through small evolutives in the 2.X projects (leaving maybe
some for the 3.X series). I just mention some of the planned changes:
- A first new release with lots of many more documents
- Improvements in library file manipulation (UPX support to save space)
- dynamic translations (as opposed to nowadays static ones)
- supplementary loadable mappings (e.g. multimedia, apm, ...)
- multiple layouts in memory
- accessibility options
- optional ussage of XMS

may possibly have introduced new bugs, but it is for sure that KEYB
2.0 has a critical bug (for Strings) less than pre-4 had.
Anyway thanks for the report, I'll keep an eye on that too. Just for a
hint for current FreeCOM developers, KEYB loads layouts into an
internal heap of itself (for historical reasons it is again a bunch of
0's, but that does NOT make sense anymore since pre3, will change that
too), then once I know the size of the Layout I reserve a MCB into UMB
(change the MCB allocation policy, and then restore it), unless you
use /NOHI. I place the layout there (a KeybCB), and then I cut the
KEYB.EXE MCB to the minimum and Terminate and Stay Resident. That
memory is never written to for the moment, in fact the only writes to
memory in KEYB are very few variables (such as combi pending, or
perhaps the secondary buffer: all of them reside in KEYB's MCB during
the whole history of KEYB.

  - With/without EMM386

Doesn't work only if I LoadHigh from AUTOEXEC.BAT, it works if I load
it from command line or from a batch file high or not or from
AUTOEXEC.BAT if I don't try to load it into UMBs, of course if I don't
use EMM386 it works since there aren't UMBs to load it high. /B and
/NOHI options doesn't help at all.

The problem doesn't happen with FreeCOM 0.82pl3 [Dec 10 2003], so seems
to be probably a FreeCOM problem.

No - this is because bug in UPX stub, which doubles requested memory
size (for COM2EXE converted programs). Thus, 64k of requested memory for

And I don't hear that someone repost my analyze for UPX bug to UPX

Before I try buying another keyboard,... is this
possibly a configuration problem or a Freedos bug?

For example, eszet, capitals Ö Ä...

Upgrade from EMM386 to JEMM386 from www.japheth.de, but take
some time to read the docs and to manually tune your JEMM386
config sys line. It can happen easily that the default config
either does not give you much UMB (DOS=UMB / DOS=HIGH,UMB)

like your mainboard or network chipset, and make DOS unstable.

Eric, could you please extend on commandline incompatibilities?

Hello,

I think you've got enough answers, just one more to clarify things.

Windows98 as a pack will install MS-DOS 7.10, on top of which will
Windows 4.10 run.

If for the contrary your question is wether Windows 4.X will run on
top of FreeDOS, the answer is that I don't think so, or at least
you'll have problems when trying to run DOS applications and switch
tasks, because the DOS extender on which Windows 4.X is based
announces itself to start running, but FreeDOS does not react the same
way MS-DOS does, and does not prepare itself for such a multitasking
environment.

2007/5/30, Eric Auer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Hi!

Why isn't good documentation the norm? Programmers aren't
 rewarded for it.

I agree on the latter - I usually TAKE time to have reasonable
comments in my code because it is open source (so others can
reuse it or help improving it) or because I simply insist on
having maintainable code. It hardly ever happens that you GET
significant time on your schedule for maintainability or deep
maintenance work like audits. Customers only PAY for features
and few IT people think about the point that code does and
will change, so you better make it maintainable from the start.
Good luck with convincing your colleagues ;-).

I am afraid I disagree, Eric. We are just having badly or poorly
commented code BECAUSE we are creating Open Source. I believe it is
not as much the case for SMALL firms, but as for software written for
big firms, they usually not only count, but also force you to write
complete documentation (not only code comments), functional and
technical, some others also test cases, and many many manuals for it.
Some even pay for projects which are purely analytical/functional, and
that only produce documents, not code. And they are imposing money
pennalizations not only because of bugs, but also because of documents
not in time, etc.

For OpenSource there's no such pressure. As you are not paid, you
don't have to write documentation, so you just write features. Of
course, not only for the maintainability, but also to increase the
inter-cooperation, documentation is vital, but usually neglected.

Only big open source projects as Linux can expect to have some quality
documentation. As for FreeDOS, we have Pat Vilani's original book.
Unfortunately it has evolved quite a bit from there. Maybe one day we
get the critical mass as to afford more detailed documentation.

That would possibly be overdoing things again... I hope that my

reasonably well commented sources. On the other hand, I have

I don't quite agree, but anyway I don't care about the local
comments, but just some document explaining the basic architecture
of a piece of software (usually 1-2 lines saying where to start). I'm
not free of guilt, though. I just try to describe what I see in real
life.

seen the case that a meeting about coding style has been post-
poned (in a company) because people will not change anyway.
So far for companies giving the good example ;-).

Not serious ones. Strategic decission to change services provider can
come, and then what.

But of course it is always good to remember that we have to
remind ourselves to write good code in open source. Because
we are not paid for FreeDOS, there is no quality control
dept either. On the other hand, there could be one - working
with volunteers, just like our software devel dept :-).

That would be an idea, provided that there would be enough volunteers
to afford that.
Hopefully there's one for Linux kernel, e.g.

Re: [Freedos-user] Brief notes on using KEYB

2007-06-16 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello Grant,

You're right. At current stage, the modifier keys operate some extra
magic on BIOS variables, and there are YET no commands in KEYB to
perform those changes. There will be in the future, but not a near
future.

Aitor

2007/6/9, Grant Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
you won't find the KL files. You will find the KEY (i.e.
source) files instead, which can be modified (i.e. edited on
any ordinary TXT file editor) and compiled - that's when the
  KL files appear.

Yup, I finally figured that out (from reading the kc docs).
After trying for a couple hours, I also realized that keyb 2.0
can't do what I'm trying to do (I was able to map the caps lock
key to other characters, but you can't make a key function as a
modifier (shift/control/caps-lock) using keyb 2.0. It says so
plainly in the keyb docs, but I only noticed it the third time
I read the section on commands. :/

I did find a TSR that does pretty much what I want, so I'm all
 set to go.

Re: [Freedos-user] keyboard function and cursor key remapping problem

2007-06-16 Thread Aitor Santamaría
With KEYB you can actually do this, there's a basic behaviour which
lets you remap, for cerain scancode, the character it produces. You
can in addition remap the scancode, too (e.g. for german).
Then you have strings, which provide further flexibility.
Do let me/us (Henrique) know if you need some extra help.

Aitor

=== Excerpt of GR.KEY, to remap Y key to behave as regular Z:
[KEYS:kcommon]
...
 21CS 44/z44/Z44/#0 44/#0 44/#26 44/#0
...
===

C is to mean that CapsLock affects this key
S is to mean that scancode has to replace too (format Scancode/char
instead of simply char)

The columns that Henrique has defined in the file are
Normal, Shift, AltGr, Shift+AltGr, Control, Alt

2007/6/11, Eric Auer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Hi people,

 somebody asked me the following:

How can I remap function and cursor keys to those char codes:
  F1 to F6 to char codes 0xb1 to 0xb6
left right up down to char codes 8, 6, 0x0b, 5

I think both KEYB and NANSI could do that, but can anybody
explain which config files / strings have to be used for
that and how they are activated in KEYB or NANSI?

 Thanks :-)

 Eric

PS: The above keyboard remapping is for using a simple DOS
terminal software to control a Heesemann grinding machine.
A terminal which can map keycodes itself would also work, so
suggestions for suitable freeware terminals are welcome, too.

There IS NLSFUNC, but only for the UNSTABLE kernel, so I guess perhaps

I wonder what is the criterion by which something goes from unstable

for a long time already.

Re: [Freedos-user] COUNTRY.SYS settings

2007-06-27 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

Once with the unstable kernel, you should create a COUNTRY.SYS-style
file with the settings you want.

You can either load it at boot with COUNTRY= in CONFIG.SYS, or either
load it hot with NLSFUNC (in this case, create your file in a way
that the country code is the same as the country code in which your
system is booted).

Finally, make sure to choose the appropriate codepage (see Henrique's
mail). You can either do it at boot with COUNTRY= in CONFIG.SYS, or
either call nlsfunc hot, by means of the CHCP command.
Hope that helps...

Okay, I have installed the unstable kernel (which, by the way, isn't unstable
at all - at least for me). I have now the NLSFUNC command available, but how
can I change date format using that command? I studied the docs, and there
are very few possible parameters for NLSFUNC...

Re: [Freedos-user] COUNTRY.SYS settings

2007-06-27 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello Tom,

Actually they aren't.
The decimal separator is arguably ' (see below), but the thousand
separator is universally accepted (and known) as . in Spain (and NEVER
the ,).

As for the decimal separator, there's a typical controversy between
official and widespread. The official symbol is ' (as stated in
official national public agencies, I can't remember if the Spanish
language academy or by scientific (physics) academies).

However, few people actually uses it, or what's more, few people would
ever know (and what's worse accept it) as decimal separator. Although
I myself remember being taught to use ' in School, the common belief
between Spaniards is that the decimal separator is the , (and NEVER
the .). Even in Microsoft Windows and other programs (MS-Excel), they
have by default , (so perhaps a reason to change our COUNTRY setting,
although it was myself who suggested to use the official ' ).

Just for an extra bit, there's another similar discussion with the
capital vowels and diacritics. A very old rule stated that the capital
letters would NEVER accept a diacritic sign (thus, ÁÉÍÓÚÜ should NEVER
be used, you write AEIOUU as the capitals for áéíóúü). However, the
Spanish language academy changed their mind (I think about three
decades ago) as they judged that not using them may lead to ambiguous
or illegible words. However, not many people knows it, and there are
quite some that haven't bothered to check it and will swear that you
MUST never used ÁÉÍÓÚÜ.

   Date format: dd.mm.
   Time format: hh:mm
   Decimal separator: .
   Hundreds separator: '
Currency: € (I don't know if FreeDOS is storing the currency anywhere)

   enter into CONFIG.SYS:
   country=49 (german)

gets pretty close to what you want (even for the stable kernel),

see the other possibilities below, hard compiled into the kernel.

the currency is probably irrelevant, no program ever cared

Looks good! It's nice to see a 3D version of the logo.
Just one thing: I've seen the main logo in the site and noticed that

Could you please create another one over, say, white background, where
the black border can be easily differenciated?

 Hi Aitor!

It seems you're using some some oldish image-reader software...

In fact, the background is transparent, but your software (which can't support
PNG transparency) translates it into black.

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS Updater

2007-11-30 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

Congrats on the package system!! I think it is a great idea.

Just some comments:
(1) About the files to be put, I guess that the package system would
not, for the moment, try to download from a site outside ibiblio
itself, so the binary and source files could be simply unix links to
the actual files in the freedos repository (you can even create them
with an FTP client).

(2) I think there should be some way of categorising, or at least, the
user should be prompted. For if I have the mini distribution without
sources, I wouldn't want everything from the full distribution with
sources. Actually, is there any different behaviour with new files
than with updated files?

(3) I guess that the system does have some local DB to compare to
the remote DB and see what is to be downloaded. Is this local DB XML
or LSM?

Thanks again!

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS Updater

2007-12-02 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

I am going to give a bunch of ideas, I hope any of those is of some use.

2007/12/2, Jim Hall [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
One more thing: I think the pkgs and spkgs for the update server
should be assumed to be different than the zip files that we upload to
ibiblio. A pkg and spkg have a particular meaning; they contain a
   particular directory structure.

You are right, but it would be good if we could move towards a point
where all files have that directory structure. Otherwise, it will be
the exception, not the rule, that a downloaded zip file can be used
for updating. For all normal files, people now are forced to unzip
to a temp directory and spend time to sort the files to put them in
the right directories in their installed freedos.

It's not realistic to assume we will be able to have *every* zip file
on the ibiblio archive to use the FreeDOS pkg directory structure.
There are a few problems here:

 1. Not all developers care about FreeDOS pkg structure. And it would
be inappropriate of me to re-zip their release into a FreeDOS
pkg-compatible structure. (It would be ok to create a pkg to put on
the update server, but it is not ok to re-zip someone else's work
before putting it in the general archive.) Also note that sometimes we
put zip files on ibiblio that cannot be included on the FreeDOS
distribution because they are not free for all, but are useful for
some. The license for these non-free programs may prohibit
 repackaging.

As I see it, the fact that some DOS software is mirrored at ibiblio's
FreeDOS repository is a privilege, not a nice present.
Thus, it could be an idea that there is some kind of FreeDOS logotype
test (LOL ;-)) meaning that some programs have passed the minimum
requirements of:
- An LSM is submitted, so that the software is fully described
- It fully follows the pkg structure.

At certain time I even thought of a second approach to this problem: a
FreeDOS package to be a ZIP file with another extension (say FPF or
FreeDOS Package File) matching certain conditions, such as:
- it follows the pkg structure
- there exists the appinfo/XXX.LSM file
I thought of the second because the programmer could encode in that
LSM the condition to run certain Post-Install script, that would be
run after the package is installed. The extended LSM could host
other information, that we might not exploit at this moment, but maybe
in the future. Things like: dependencies, path to executable, path to
a HTML-Help file (for automatic Help update), etc.
Then there's the decission whether the FreeDOS package would be able
to deal with these special FPF files (and deal with the versioning
stuff, post-install script, maybe dependencies), and for standard ZIP
packages, well, just the basic (there exists XXX.ZIP with date YYY,
newer than current XXX.LSM, install?).

 3. We may (at some later date) choose to change the FreeDOS pkg
directory layout. As of today, no suggestions to do this have been
made, but a year from now it's possible that we may want to change it.
I don't want to re-zip everything on ibiblio to meet the new pkg
 standard.

Perhaps it is the moment to see if the pkg structure needs a review or
not. We could discuss about it, and settle certain FreeDOS directory
structure 1.0, so that programs are based on it.

A clever idea that Microsoft does (for example, to allow locale in
filenames, C:\Program Files is, in my system, C:\Archivos de
Programa\) IIRC is to use a kind of location variable, so that for
example, %10 would be Program Files, %11 would be Windows folder, etc.
It would be certainly quite a lot of more work, but it could be that
the ZIP (or FPF) does NOT have directories, but has instead a mapping
file:
\DISKCOPY.001 = %12\DISKCOPY.EXE
(and in turn, %12 could be standarised to C:\FREEDOS\BIN by the
packager program).

 4. Others who roll their own distro for themselves or for a distro
they make available to others may not want to use our pkg directory
layout, but instead go with something slightly different.

and don't they have their own package program too (as in Linux)?

But the FDUPDATE program will be downloading these files using
   wget to a DOS filesystem.

  Suggestion: wget -O choicex.zip http://foo/bar/choice-4.4-binary.zip

This also makes sure that you have a static name of the
downloaded file (does not contain a version number) and also
a readable name (does contain the full name choice) after
the download and a readable name including a readable version
  number on the server :-).

Remember that it is useful if people can find a package with
google. Bonnie probably has a lot of experience with this
when she tried to find new downloads of various packages...
She would not have found a dkcp0815.zip when looking for
  freedos diskcopy.

Your suggestion works well when the package title is 7 characters or
less. But you give an example of a package title that is 8 characters
 (DISKCOPY). Also DISKCOMP,

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS Updater

2007-12-02 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

2007/12/2, Eric Auer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
put zip files on ibiblio that cannot be included on the FreeDOS
distribution because they are not free for all...

You are right. The updater can make use of extra nonfree
repositories outside ibiblio, while our ISOs gotta be free.

Following the idea I exposed before, you could even have locally a
folder called:

C:\FREEDOS\3RDPARTY\...

where it would unpackage all that is not packaged on the new structure
(in the words before, being a ZIP and not a FPF).

I don't want to re-zip everything on ibiblio to meet the new pkg
  standard.

The standard is not new - I only suggest to re-zip everything
which will be part of FreeDOS 1.1, because there is not other
choice. You need zips in fdpkg format for every single package
which will be on the ISO, and we need helpers for that task.

I agree.

For the beta9 and 1.0 distros, Bernd and Blair had to do most
of this work themselves, and it is a lot of work because there
are many packages and because quite a few are not already in
fdpkg format when you download them from the developer's page.

True. And I even remember that if you made small mistakes about the
pkg structure, they would fix that.

2007-12-03 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

2007/12/3, Jim Hall [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
On 12/2/07, Aitor Santamaría [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
But programs that are in the distributions can be assumed to be
re-zipped pkgs, especially so if we choose to rename them with FDP or
 PKG.

That is good. Then you could go along with an standard. Perhaps
re-versioning the packing howto. Reviewing other things, as the must
of including the LSM file somewhere (as in the header), and the
possible extensions to the LSM (see below).

Interestingly, at one point on FDPM we had considered adding
dependencies and post-install tasks a-la the RPM spec (%dependencies%
and %pre% and %post% sections after the End in the LSM.) But we
never followed up on it while I worked on FDPM.

What I am then a bit lost is, what and where is the use of the XML
file that was mentioned in other parts of the conversation?

If we're open to discussing the pkg format, I'd like to suggest 3 things:

 1. adherence to the directory layout (already defined, but probably
 not well known)

 2. move the LSM file out of the zip file archive, and into the zip
file comment header. This makes it easier for programs built using zip
file tools to easily read the LSM header without having to unzip part
of the archive just to read a single APPINFO/__.LSM file.

 3. adherence to the LSM file format. We have a lot of LSMs out there
now that don't follow the LSM format very well. We should either move
back to what the LSM spec actually says, or agree that we're
abandoning it and choose some other file format for pkg info.

The (2) idea is great, specially if it can be extracted using a C API too!
As for the rest, I would simply re-version the how-to that talks about
packing (the contribution howto?).

I've started to capture the thread in a new changes to the software

possible. That document can be the start of a spec for (a) what the

Hope to have it done this afternoon if I can also work on it during

Hello,

This will also be useful for some related projects: Writing some

Is not that I prefer it, it's that it's precisely what PRINTER.SYS is

also code to load new fonts into a printer.

2008-06-24 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

I'll give you my opinion. Perhaps more than facing on features, I see
two foreseeable problems.

(1) If computers are ever to boot on a 64-bit world with EFI instead
of BIOS, I guess that there would be a kind of 16/32-bit API for
maping BIOS into EFI, otherwise that is key to FreeDOS (or I am
completely mislead).

(2) DOSers are probably likely to use EMM386, what about
interoperability or even some kind of emulation/mixture?

Probably thougher topics than it seems.

 HI there

Note: that fundamentally I am a harware guy so if this skew wiff in some way

This thing is going to have to be structured as follows:

 Memory spaces:

D Disk space - holds the (sparse?) virtual address space image on disk.

V Virtual space - holds the address space storage in core being
 manipulated on.

LLogical space - what the 64b cpu refers to.

PPhysical space - Actual ram installed.

I assume that address registers are either 48b or 64b long, data registers are
 8b,16b,32b,64b
and that there is probally a bit to control the size of extended registers
 like in in 386.

 Handling 64b data would be nice,but 64b address's?.

The 32b dos extender I wrote only supports L P spaces.

What real need is there for this?.

Have pentium 64b 586 2GB ram to develope software on.

Re: [Freedos-user] put drivers in XMS

2008-07-02 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

2008/6/3 Eric Auer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Hi Robert,

I remember some old driver in protected mode and cloaking
related stuff from the old days but only few drivers did
support it afair? So I would suggest that we just take our
new open source drivers and turn those which really need
a lot of RAM into JLM modules for JEMM386. The interface
is a bit like DLL and DPMI, you can for example hook any
DOS interrupt and let the handler reside outside the first
megabyte :-). Typical candidates would be DOSLFN, SHSUCDX,
SHARE, DISPLAY, but the latter is a bit tricky as it does
have to show the font data in DOS-accessible RAM sometimes.

In most times: every time someone calls the video mode change function
at int 10h. You could actually hook the call, and before going into it
then: alloc somewhere 12Kb of memory (from DOS?), then use XMS
functions to recall data back, and finally do the usual DISPLAY
stuff... but looks like quite prone to failures to me.

 Hey!

I had some time ago a similar suggestion. Loading into EMS/XMS would be
a bad idea because more outdated applications use EMS/XMS.

Well, in fact it gave me idea that EMS could actually be suitable for
DISPLAY: you book a couple of contiguous pages, then upon call to
int10h select those pages as available.

Note (Eric) that these changes wouldn't change at all the DISPLAY
core, but the particular EGA/VGA driver.

Automatically not. You basically try out with different AUTOEXEC and

Re: [Freedos-user] Freedos 1.1 status

2008-09-02 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

2008/8/29, Travis Siegel [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Speaking of freedos 1.1.
I know freedos isn't intended to be dos *exactly* but it is intended
to be a free dos replacement.
This is fine for those using emulators under other operating systems,
and those who can see their screens.
However, I'm interested in using freedos as well, and not being able
to see, kind of puts a crimp in things.
Last time I tried running my screen reader on freedos (admittedly, it
was several years ago, and freedos wasn't anywhere near ver 1.0) it
 just plain didn't work.
However, since then, I know freedos has come a long way, and I have
decided to get involved (if possible) to help freedos work for
 visually impaired users as well.
There is a free w/source screen reader for dos called provox.
(can't remember where I found it, but can go look it up if needed)
I'm curious if I can get it to compile and operate properly under
freedos, is this something the freedos maintainers would be willing to
 include in the main distribution?

Most modern operating systems have some sort of screen reader built-in
(although some are *extremely* limited) such as narrator, but others
such as speakup and orca included with a lot of linux distros are very
functional, and of course, osx includes a full-blown screen reader
 called voiceover.
I didn't write provox, but I *think* I know the person who did, though
the source is gpl, and technically, we shouldn't have to ask his
 permission.
If this could be made to work, freedos could then be listed as blind-
friendly, and would likely win a few more supporters.

So, I guess what it boils down to is:
how does one go about including a product in the base distribution,
and is screen reader access something the freedos team would agree to
 include?
 Thanks for any information provided.

I guess in a CD there is enough room. The only need is that the basic
rules are observed: basically that the license must be GNU-GPL 2 or
weaker, and just to observe some basic rules about how the packing
should be.
Have a look at the several documentation how-tos at fd-doc to get an idea.
Also you should fill-in a LSM record for the program, so that it can be tracked.

FD-DOC: http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php
LSM: http://www.freedos.org/freedos/software/

Greetings and good luck!

[Freedos-user] ANNOUNCE: FreeDOS EDIT 0.9a (FD-Dflat+ based)

2008-09-06 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hi all,

I hereby announce FreeDOS EDIT 0.9a (the sucessor of EDIT 0.7d).

The big change about the 0.9 series is that it is now based on FreeDOS
DFlat+, which is a user interface development toolkit, that has
actually been excerpted (and continued) from EDIT. Thus, if you ever
happen to see another DFlat+ -based application, you should expect to
see a similar usability and look and feel.

THe list of changes is huge, although most are internal and do not
reflect in functionality. However, I may have introduced several new
bugs, so please, let me know if you find them. You can grab it here:

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/edit/edit09ax.zip

However, for EDIT 0.9a I have commited also some user-oriented
changes, specially in the way menus and submenus are handled. Here you
have a list of changes:

(*) SmoothMenus: in short, what changed in menus from Windows 3.1 to
Windows95 with respect to mouse behaviour. Also:
- adapted keyboard behaviour: Esc and left arrow do NOT close the
entire cascade, etc.
- submenus are no longer restricted to the application window area
- clicking outside a menu closes it
- when an option is disabled, it no longer beeps (only closes the pop-up)

(*) Changed: in the Search/Replace box, the case-check is off by default.

(*) Fix: yes/no boxes admit arrow keys

(*) Fix: Open/Save as boxes no longer admit Esc as a valid character

(*) Fix: when opening a file with tabs, the WatchIcon loked the mouse.
No longer happens.

Happy Edit'ing, and bug reporting!

Re: [Freedos-user] ANNOUNCE: FreeDOS EDIT 0.9a (FD-Dflat+ based)

2008-09-06 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello Michael,

More information about DFlat+ is at the freedos-devel list (not here),
I'll forward to you the mail privately.

I do not keep track of how it was prior to FreeDOS EDIT, but I am
afraid that the development and patching of D-FLAT inside EDIT turned
it too BorlandC dependent.

Current DFlat+ is compatible with both BorlandC (3.1) and OpenWatcom C
(1.6), but it took me a while to replace the BorlandC specific code in
order to make it OW compatible.

FD-EDIT 0.9a is compiled under BC3, just as its predecessors.

Cheers!

ie: if i try to use display con=(vga,850,1) the screen get a strange format

Geraldo, the parameter here is to describe how your *hardware* is,
which is most likely to be 437.
If you put a 850 there, you are saying that your hardware already has

could have introduced a new bug, could you please say if you happen to
find a pattern to make EDIT 0.9a crash, and wether the bug is
reproduced in EDIT 0.7d?

[Freedos-user] Fwd: invalid opcode when loading mode

2008-09-28 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

As usual, Eric ported the conversation to private (is it just me who
does NOT like it?), and after a long thread, for those interested, the
results are:

(1) Several programs ceased to work properly whenever LH without a XMS
driver NOT being present and you try to load high (using UNSTABLE
kernel? latest/unstable version of FreeCOM?).

could be accompained with
(2) a DISPLAY or MODE bug: in order to test it, is anyone using
FreeDOS WITHOUT XMS, and running both DISPLAY and MODE CON stuff?

437 at all, but 850 (unless in later operation he performs a codepage
select of 437, that would, with his configuration, fail otherwise).

I wouldn't use LH, because it is highly unlikely that you'll have an
UMB as big as for almost the 64KB that DISPLAY needs to run (because
it does not know beforehand how many buffers you'll need), even if
after running it just uses about 11Kb (9Kb of which are data).

 mode con codepage prepare=((850) a:\dos\ega.cpx)
 mode con codepage select=850

Try MKEYB instead, just in case.

???
Where do you see the hint that KEYB is behind this? He mentions that
it is after he loads FDAPM. Wouldn't it be more sensible to advice him
NOT TO USE an unstable kernel?
In NONE of the reports so far such crashes have ever been reported as
s bug of KEYB.
Sincerely, Eric, I think it does not good to the project that whenever
there's a problem you just suggest to use the programs that you prefer
just in case, first of all because there is no relation between the
bug reported and the programs you mention, and second, because you are
bringing suspicion to programs to which you do not have a solid
argument.

From his configuration, he is configuring a codepage. The difference
between FD-KEYB and MKEYB is precisely the support for the codepage
management (present in FD-KEYB) as opposed to the smallest size of
MKEYB.

Re: [Freedos-user] invalid opcode when loading mode

2008-10-05 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

2008/10/4 Eric Auer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
From his AUTOEXEC he does not seem to be using
codepage 437 at all, but 850

As far as I understood, the number mentioned when
you load DISPLAY is about the hardware codepage,
not about the codepage loaded by DISPLAY...?

Yes

I wouldn't use LH, because it is highly unlikely
that you'll have an UMB as big as for almost the
64KB that DISPLAY needs to run (because it does
not know beforehand how many buffers you'll need),
even if after running it just uses about 11Kb
 (9Kb of which are data).

I believe it always needs only 11 kB as long as it
has enough XMS to put those 64 kB? So and if you
do not have XMS, you also have no UMB... What I am
trying to suggest: If DISPLAY does not say to DOS
(via the DISPLAY exe header) that it needs 64 kB
then it will still work: Because either you have
UMB - then you probably also have XMS - or you do
not have UMB - then you load DISPLAY into low DOS
memory which is almost always 400 kB or more :-).

Sorry, no. I'm not writing software that works based on some probable
supositions, but based on what DOS tells me at runtime.
We have written millions of lines in private mails, and basically I am
tired of this topic.

The conclusion is: I am not going to make DISPLAY fail in certain
circumstances it shouldn't, even if they affect the least of the
users.
I don't want to continue on this topic. Please Eric, do not follow-up.

From his configuration, he is configuring a codepage. The difference
between FD-KEYB and MKEYB is precisely the support for the codepage
management (present in FD-KEYB) as opposed to the smallest size of
 MKEYB.

Hmmm okay. You mean when using CHCP? But if you do use CHCP

No. You can always use MODE CON CP SELECT.

For DISPLAY, you would expect XMS to be used, but for KEYB?

That is MCB allocate, function 48h.
Used to allocate data in an independent MCB block, so that KEYB is
made independent from the problem by which you load a second keyboard
layout which is bigger than the first one.

I see you're also using 2.0-pre4, somewhat old.
Anyway, I recommend forthcomming KEYB 2.01, which fixes several bugs
(just in case).

 Hi!

So why cant we just create a database/table - file that allows
lookup in a second area, either a file on
the hard drive or a separate partition. then based on the
file/directory ID and store that in the database table completely
separate from the FAT if we don't touch fat it should be fine. If we
are using a different method and system we are safe.

In reality, though, linux filesystem drivers have been using this
method of accessing/writing long filenames for years; if Microsoft
were to go after an operating system, it would be linux first.  And as
Eric pointed out to me, they seem to go more after embedded devices
that use long filenames on FAT filesystems.  So really, I don't think
 there's anything to worry about.

I think a descript.ion file based driver to support
long file names would be a fine idea indeed :-).
And it would avoid the ugly kludgy way in which MS
stores LFN spread over multiple directory entries.

Re: [Freedos-user] Installing programs on FreeDOS v1.1

2009-04-11 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

I think that it's a good idea overall that one can decide the folder
where one can install the big programs, as could be to have a
OpenWatcom or FreePascal distribution, whereas the single-binary ones
(or equally smaller) should be merged into the freedos\bin directory.

2009/4/6 Eric Auer e.a...@jpberlin.de:

devel - mostly compilers and libraries, several could go
into global lib/ and compile/ directories and a few big
ones would have their own directory, eg watcom

What would that global lib/ folder be about? If it is about storing
LIB files, I remind you that we (or more specifically, you) voted
against having FREEDOS\LIB for such thing long ago (whereas I lined
for and lost), with the argument that such stuff should go
preferably uncompiled, and in any case under SOURCE folder. ;)

In any case, I don't think it's a good idea for devel stuff: if it's a
small compiler, such as NASM, UPX, then it can fit in \freedos\bin. As
for the big ones (e.g. OpenWatcom), they need not be treated different
from any other big stuff (like Arachne).

Cheers,
Aitor

Re: [Freedos-user] What about changing our packaging style for v1.1?

2009-04-15 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

I strongly suggest to look for a way to exclude with unzip the
extracting of the sources on a binary-only install mode.

Just another small pro: we have one more letter in the file names (for
those of us who care about the 8.3 format in the package names).

And just another idea (maybe for the wiki too, if everyone likes it):
if such option exists in unzip, then I suggest for all programs using
cats/kitten to store their catalog in a per-language basis, so that
the installer can simply drop the directories of the unwanted
languages. E.g.:

NLS\EN
NLS\DE
NLS\ES
NLS\FR
...

for v1.1, and I have to tell that handling sources and binaries in
different ways is a big pain.
Besides that, the source package doesn't contain its own LSM file, which
makes its hard (or at least unreliable) to keep track of what source is
 installed in what version.

Therefore, I am proposing to drop the sources / binaries way of thinking,
and stay with one package per program. For example, a mem.zip package
would contain both sources and binaries. It would allow me to work much
faster on packaging, and hopefully could lead to a v1.1 sooner.

Some reasons to do that (quotes from Eric):
 - it is easy to delete /source/mem/* to keep only binaries,
 - it is not really allowed with GNU GPL License to publish binaries without
 sources anyway,
 - it can be hard for people to find exactly the right version of the
sources manually later, so it is best to include them,
 - it makes life easier for installing and you can always drop the sources
 after installing.

Please tell me what are your opinions in that matter.

 Jim Hall wrote:
These days, hard drives have lots of capacity. While including the

 GB.

Including the source and binaries together certainly provides that
every program in the FreeDOS 1.1 distro also includes the source
 code.

I am a big fan of this.

Thanks :-) I think it will make packaging easier... On the other
hand, I would suggest two things: A binary-only install mode in
FDPKG / FDUPDATE / installer which simply skips the source/NAME
dir while unzipping (or deletes it afterwards) and a binary-only
ISO for people with slow internet, as generated by dropping the
source directories inside the package zip files.  In short:  Let
us COLLECT all packages as FULL packages (binary AND source) for
most purposes and use AUTOMATED ways to shrink full into binary
for people with small disk or small internet :-).

Can you put this in the FreeDOS Wiki, so people don't have to revisit
this topic again in a year after we've forgotten? :-)

Sounds useful - if anybody needs a wiki login, let me know ;-)

Eric, what I meant is: see how many people writes to us telling that
the MS-DOS-style MENUing in CONFIG.SYS does not work in FreeDOS, so I
guess we would be flooded with messages like: I wrote with LFNs to a
disk, and Windows no longer recognises the filenames, and has the
FILE4~1.TXT form instead.

And it would avoid the ugly kludgy way in which MS
stores LFN spread over multiple directory entries.

Well actually that is what I meant - descript.ion is a classic
for some shells and file managers, but it is also a nice way to
store long file names in filesystem independent way and without
having to implement any kludgy patented VFAT style LFN storage.

With a driver showing the usual int 21 LFN interface to the apps
but using descript.ion instead of LFN fragment direntry chains
for the actual LFN storage, we can have more free, more open and
more portable long file names :-). On the down side, the driver
will not read or write VFAT LFNs for you, so if you want to let
Windows and DOS access the same drive, you would not share LFNs.

This includes USB drives and MP3 player devices and similar, but
not for example CD / DVD which use non-VFAT LFNs anyway for which
 DOS uses separate drivers anyway...

In short: If you want VFAT then the only way to get it is to use
VFAT, but that might have licensing issues if you use DOS in your
embedded device. If you only want LFN, you can get it even in a
way that makes LFN DOS apps happy without having to touch VFAT
data structures, using a descript.ion based LFN API driver :-).

Re: [Freedos-user] getting applications working

2009-06-30 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello,

2009/6/6 LM lme...@yahoo.com:
I had to run the install CD twice to get FreeDOS installed on the hard drive.
The first time, I tried to pick an image on bootup and the system locked up.
Second time, I left it as default.  I guess I'm not very familiar with the
programs that installed with FreeDOS (other than the basic DOS stuff),
because I got on and wasn't sure where to get started.  I have a large
cabinet full of legacy hardware and software, so I decided perhaps I should
go back to the programs on DOS I'm most familiar with just to get going.  My
experience was that about half of the ones i tried on FreeDOS worked.

to pick an image on bootup, what do you mean?

WordPerfect 6.0 appears to work fine.  Was very happy to see that.  My
 favorite DOS programming editor (ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/editor/edwin15c.zip)
fails and won't run.  Has anyone been able to get edwin working on FreeDOS?

A pitty that garbo seems to be unreachable from here right now, if
someone knows of an alternative download site...

Can you post any more information about those bugs?
If you refer to the cursor blinking bug that was supposed to appear
on 0.9a, so far I only know of a single PC of a single user where this
bug appears (apparently the user had some problem with his BIOS).
Frankly in my opinion the mouse pointer has always blinked too much

Any other bug reports are appreciated.

Re: [Freedos-user] De-Geekifying This List (Was: Some Simple List Rules)

2009-07-01 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hello Mike,

Thanks for writing and expressing your opinion.
In fact, I think you brought an interesting topic that is also of my
concern. When the freedos-user list was created, it was indeed created
as a list for those users that need not have knowledge about the
internals of FreeDOS itself in order to use it.
So far, the facts that I have experienced are:

(a) Much of the traffic has switched from freedos-devel to
freedos-user. In some cases it is a correct movement, as we could
seldomly see that inexperienced users asked simple FreeDOS ussage
question in a list that was supposed to be to discuss internalities of
FreeDOS development.

(b) At times, the replies are quite technical or advanced (or geek),
far more than the original question. At times I have tried in the past
to move those to the freedos-devel, but that proved to be helpless.

(c) In most times, a simple question produced a complex/geek answer,
but was appropriate to the geekness level that the person who asked
expected.

(d) At times, a simple question produced a complex/geek answer, that
the person who asked did not understand, but didn't dare/bother to ask
for more help.

In the understanding that there should be a chance for both types of
users, I propose the following two options: just let me know what you
think, and I'll run the administrative stuff:
(1) Create a new mailing list called freedos-advanced aimed to the
advanced users, and leave this one for the basic users.
(2) Create a new mailing list called freedos-basic aimed to the
basic users, and leave this one for the advanced users.

In both cases, I should advise that,
(a) in the basic users list, technicalities should be left appart as
much as possible, in the understanding that the user there must not
necessarily be an IT-PC-super-expert.
(b) if a user expects a more detailed answer on certain topic, (s)he
should turn to the advanced list and ask there.

The traffic should not change, as it's just more a question of knowing
the degree of detail that the user needs. And freedos-devel is not
changed/affected in any way.

Cheers,
Aitor

  1. Please remember that this is a users mailing list.
Many of these folks are non technical and may not under-
stand the ramifications of what they are asking for.

Pat, as a person who's been following this list for some time, I'm not
sure that the purpose you've mentioned is being adhered to all that
well. I have been a power user since the days when DOS was cool, and a
lot of the posts still go over my head like a roof. Discussions of
compiling,  listings of scripts (config.sys settings?) that are far
more complicated than I've ever used and many more things give me the
impression that this is much more of a Freedos-Geeks list than a
 Freedos-User list.

I just went to the Freedos site, the Wiki and the How-To pages and am
still about as baffled as to how to make Freedos work for me as I have
 been all along.

The impression I have (despite the statement that Freedos can pretty
much run any software designed for MS-DOS) is that the kind of system
I used as a 100% DOS user would not work, but requires a lot more
stuff in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. Let me give as an example a
 basic CONFIG/AUTOEXEC setup for MS-DOS (5.x and higher);

 CONFIG.SYS:
 device=HIMEM.SYS
 device=EMM386.EXE
 files=40
 buffers=40
 devicehigh=NANSI.SYS

 AUTOEXEC.BAT:
 @echo off
 cls
 prompt $p$g
 path=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\BAT;C:\UTIL
 lh SMARTDRV.EXE 2048
 cls
 c:
 cd \
 ver

(I've probably forgotten something; it's been quite awhile since I've
written these files from scratch; or tinkered with them at all, for
 that matter.)

I found nothing in the HOWTOs on the order of Freedos for Dummies or
Freedos for experienced MS-DOS Users. I honestly don't know what I
could reasonably expect to do in a Freedos environment, using this
configuration that would work just fine in an MS-DOS environment. If
there are samples of basic CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files lurking
around, I can't readily find them. And if I can't find them, people
with even less knowledge aren't going to, either.

I wish I could offer to pitch in on the kinds of things that I see are
needed, but it's beyond my reach at this time. Plus, considering all
the gobbledygook I read here, I'm not even sure where I'd begin.

All I can say is that for Freedos' sake, whatever effort some of y'all
can make to set out a welcome mat that explains the differences
between MS-DOS and FreeDOS, particularly as far as configuration goes
and how to resolve issues involving common programs that don't quite
run as-is under Freedos would be very much appreciated, I believe.

 Thanks for listening.

My newest project is Lindin, the LINux Dos INstaller (typical

zenity, a GUI equivalent of dialog) to install FreeDOS 1.0 + FDUPDATE
updates onto a FAT partition. The site is at
http://lindin.tuxfamily.org/. I released version 1.0 last week, but
haven't gotten around to sending an announcement to this list until
 now.

There are .deb packages, .rpm packages, and a .lzm module available.
If you are using .deb or .rpm, grab lindin, freedos-base, and
freedos-updates. Lindin can work without freedos-base and download the
packages instead, but without freedos-updates, they'll be the old
packages from 2006. The .lzm module is designed for Slax, and can
really come in handy if you have a Slax CD and need to install FreeDOS
 for some reason.

If you have Linux, try it out (in a VM, probably) and tell me what you
think. It's still a work in progress.

 Good day to you.

My name is Bret Johnson, and I write DOS TSR programs.  I am sending this
e-mail to you because you have contacted me in the past regarding at least
one of my DOS programs, and I thought you might be interested in knowing
that I have just released some DOS USB drivers for testing.  These drivers
are completely different (and hopefully better) than any other DOS USB
drivers that are currently available.  There are drivers for USB
keyboards, mice, joysticks, printers, and disk drives.

Unfortunately, the the drivers have some limitations, and may not work
with your current hardware.  They host drivers will currently only work
with USB host controllers that use the UHCI protocol, which are made by
Intel and Via Technologies.  Support for other host controller
manufacturers will be added in the future.

If you're interested, please go to my web site (http://bretjohnson.us),
download the files, and let me know what you think.  If you're not
interested, I apologize for the inconvenience.  Please let me know if you
want me to remove you from my contact list regarding DOS programs.

Re: [Freedos-user] Two non-bug reports.

2009-07-05 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Hi,

2009/7/4 Christian Masloch c...@bttr-software.de:
First non-bug:  LFN-EN utilities don't work with my FAT32 partition
 under FreeDOS.

After examining the source code, it turns out that the logic was coded
 in 1999 when
the only DOS that could handle FAT32 was MS-DOS.  When run under
 FreeDOS, the utilities
assume no FAT32 support, so they misidentify the partition as FAT12.

For test purposes, I made a version that accepted the vendor byte FD
 (FreeDOS) instead of
FF (MS-DOS) and it worked, but anything used in production would have to
 use a different
method to determine whether FAT32 is supported (FreeDOS comes both ways,
and there are several DOSses today that support FAT32.)

There is similar logic that determines which versions of DOS require
 volume locking
 (MS-DOS 7 or later.)

Fortunately the LFN-EN utilities are open source, so someone could fix
 this.

A reliable FAT32 test method is to check whether a common subfunction of
Interrupt 21h, Function 73h (FAT32 extensions) is supported. I disregard
any method that works per DOS version. Users apparently don't want
technical details on the Freedos-user list however.

I don't think so: some want, some do not. The question is that
currently there's no way to know about it. So I am almost decided to
create that freedos-basic list, so that technical details can run here
as usual.

Cheers,
Aitor

The solution is much easier - discuss technical details on
freedos-devel and basic things on freedos-user as usual.

Maybe recently more people discussed technical details on
freedos-user because there is more activity there than on
freedos-devel? Of course this should not be a reason to
migrate threads or even start yet another list... ;-).

Often threads started normal on Freedos-user but the discussion got
technical later on. I don't want to be accused of geekifying anyone's

developers for fixing the problem. Good that I'll never have to provide a

Hi,

Well, at least while those fancy 64-bit processors start at 16-bit,
and have a 32-bit mode that can run tasks in the V86 mode, we are
safe.
I wonder, however, what will happen once Microsoft start releasing

As far as I can tell, the last commit in the SVN for the project was in
2007, so it's either abandoned, in hiatus, or going so slowly that no
commits have been pushed through in the last two years.
Remaking the FreeDOS kernel to be 32-bit might be rather significant, or
even to 64-bit, since we are starting to see quite a few 64-bit processors.
The only problem with a 64-bit FreeDOS kernel is figuring out how to deal
with 16-bit applications. I'd say the best option would be to add a
driver/module that would do the exact same thing as user-mode QEMU on Linux:
emulate a processor and load it in a hybrid environment.

 Eric

Since XST is compiled with DJGPP, it's hardware requirements are almost
 the same of FreeBasic

FreeBasic (FB) and XST Basic are different products, with different targets.

FB is a true compiler; XST is an interpreter + a C emitter (it cannot
directly compile, but can convert the source into a C code that can be
 compiled)

FB has a QB compatible mode; XST is more based on AMOS and STOS Basic
 (for Amiga and Atari ST)

FB is a generic, all-purposes language; XST is focused on multimedia and
game development (even a very good Doom clone is available in demos)

FB can be extended with external libraries; XST already has graphic,
 sprites, 3D and sound support.

 FB can only compile, you have to use an external editor (i.e. RHIDE);
XST has its own IDE, where you can write and instantly run your program.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

The XST Basic, written by Rodney Mc Connell, is now open source.

About the screen problem:
I don't know that model, but in earlier laptops, text mode wouldn't

Under Linux, many text modes are actually graphic modes

First, there is no sound, which I've heard is common. According to the Dell

the type Sound Blaster Emulation. Yet the sound doesn't work. I don't know

 do I get sound working?
Second, but not as important, is that the video does not fill up the whole

 It is a NeoMagic 2200.
Lastly, I'd like to be able to use my USB drive with FreeDOS. I installed

Re: [Freedos-user] keyb and freedos

2009-09-11 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Roberto, I gor your mail but am quite busy this week.
The person that may easily help would be Henrique Peron (for knowledge).

Regards,
Aitor

 Hi Roberto,

I am no expert for KEYB,  but even if Aitor is too busy to
answer, I am sure somebody on freedos-user can help you :-)

Re: [Freedos-user] Malware5.

Kurt, I usually send such zip files renamed to .aaa and bypasses that
annoyance. Just make sure to tell the picker to do the rename Back ;)

I just tried sending two versions to Pat, one the suspect tarball, the other
an 'rar' type file; the gmail accepted the rar but rejected the tarball,
 saying;
this file contains an executable and is not allowed; both the rar and the
tarball contain executables? they both have them encapsulated in compression
 files,
yet the gmail balks at one and not the other? --kurtwb2...@gmail.com.

Ok, just a suggestion, as apparently
works for me as .aaa, or at least did the last time I tried :)

 Aitor,
thanks, but I already tried that with Pat; the gmail catches it even with
 the rename!. kurtwb2...@gmail.com.
