Hi,

this is my final message on this topic after this I think it should be
closed and we get back to talking about games and how to play them. the
only way to have such a society inwhich there is no need for money and
everything is shared would be to destroy our entire current economicsystem
and remake it from scratch built on the principals of the gpl. that will
never happen in the current society due to the current nature of humanity
itself. So I'll just accept how things are. perhaps to improve NVDA
college/university students would work on it as an assignment to
contribute code.

[Audyssey] brain teezer

2009-09-09 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Hello folks
Before we get down to the actual stuff, lets just give you all a little
disclaimer, shall we?
I strongly feel the following is on-topic for this list as I believe
strongly that riddles can also be classified as games and since this
list
discusses only accessible games to visually impaired, I feel that my
riddle
is indeed accessible to the vip, as you will use your screen reader to
read
my riddle and you will use your thinking abilities to try and decipher
the
riddle, so yes, this post is therefore considered by me as fully
ontopic.
all Right, now that the disclaimer is behind us, let this game begin!!
Put on your thinking caps, guys;
I'm only giving you one clue, and only just one clue.
THINK, LOGICALLY
I was not intending to shout, guys.
I just wanted to put the emphasis clearly.
Think, logically.
Ask yourself: just how logically can I think?
That's the only clue I'm giving you.
Ok, here is the riddle.
Who invented opticon?
Again guys, think logically.
I'm giving you all enough time to think about and post answers before I
give
the answer.
I will give the answer tomorrow afternoon 4:00 south African time.
But I will indeed proceed the answer with a spoiler space warning.
I just might be lenient enough to give you guys another clue during the
course of tomorrow if I see you struggle badly.
Oh no!
Do not tell me it will be another riddle to find out what time 4:00 p.m
south African time will be in your country!
Lol.
Anyway, that's it.

i understand what everyone has said on the list about video games. for me
to play games i will have to get an old video game system. from what i
have heard the super nintendo was the best when it came to audio in games
for example when you play mortal kombat you can tell when the person you
are fighting is moving and shooting off different kinds of things at you.
with these new games that is out right now and the ones coming out soon is
harder to play with no sight for example the new smackdown vs. raw when you
are in the story mode you have to read some of the stuff to know what is
going on. and since with the old games you don't really have to do that
much to get unlockable stuff. for example the new mk games you got to go
through the conquest mode to unlock stuff but in the older mk games you
just do button codes to unlock stuff.
i'm going to try these old games out the best kind of games for a blind
person to play is fighting games and some sports games

Put on your thinking caps, guys;

Subject: Free advanced Chess program for Windows - WinBoard 4.4 for JAWS

Hello Friends,

I'd like to introduce a free advanced Chess software program for Windows
for the totally blind and persons needing audio announcements and /or
full keyboard access.

It is called Winboard 4.4 for JAWS. It uses any Windows version of the
JAWS screen reader to announce the chess moves and other selected
content to the player. Winboard is used world wide and represent the
state of the art in free Chess software.

Winboard 4.4 for JAWS functions to play chess on the internet at ICS
servers (Internet Chess Servers), namely the Free Internet Chess
Server more commonly known as FICS, and also provides Chess position
analysis through adaptable, Grand Master strength, free and commercial
Chess Engine programs. In addition you can saves and review games in
the popular PGN format file.

Until now no advanced, ICS compatible Chess software was available to
the blind and sight impaired or handicapped in any form. This is solely
a volunteer, non-profit effort undertaken by myself and H.G. Muller, the
chief programmer.

A version of this program called Winboard for JAWS was released in 1999
at Freedom Scientific under the GNU Public License but functioned poorly
and could not connect to the ICS servers at all.

This repaired version is updated with the latest WinBoard code and is a
significant advancement over regular WinBoard with new functionality
added by the programmer H.G. Muller. I asked him to repair WinBoard for
JAWS after I had become friends with a blind player at FICS and saw his
Telnet access to the server was sub-optimal. Further he had no access to
Chess engine analysis. Please spread the word to the blind and
handicapped. This software is ad-ware and mal-ware free and absolutely
safe and non-invasive.

Please see details and free download at the WinBoard Forum here:

2009-09-09 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Ok, lets shed some light on the matter.
The optacon, if I spell it right, is a device used in the old days to
read something.
I'm not sure what you can read with the optacon.
If I'm not mistaken, I think you can put a sighted document such as a
book into it and then it will write the letters on your hand palm so
you put your hand inside it then it will write the letters on your hand
palm .You will not have sighted writing on your hand, it just makes the
pattorns on your hand.
You need to know how each sighted letter looks like in order to use
this machine. I do not know if it is still used today.
I hope this is not as clear as mud?
lol

No, it is not used today. I saw it some 10 years ago when there were not
many scanners and computers around in my country, but at the time I saw it
it started to go out of use. Now it is very hard to find one even here in

Re: [Audyssey] modifying games

2009-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Agreed. One thing about freeware verses commercial is the commercial
developers have to make a more superior product than the freeware
products already on the market. This is good old competition and that
often is the driving force behind innovation and better products.
So using your baseball example it is true that Jim Kitchens baseball
game is a fun and a nice free game. However, a commercial developer
would have to make a better one to sell it. A developer might add a
full season mode, higher quality sound effects, more commercials,
perhaps a real commentator, etc. Then, by doing so he/she would have
made a superior product.

Johnny Tai wrote:
I too believe in paying for good games. Though I never made an audio
game my self, being a writer of novels and music, I sort of am in the
same boat- a clap on the shoulder and a 'good job' is just not enough
to keep my rent paid.
However, I think the reality is that if someone can come up with
something equal to, or even better than, what's selling, and is
willing to let it go for free... Well, who am I to say that is wrong?
All the more power to such a person, and in the long run, all that
means is that those who wish to sell their products would have to work
even harder to come up with something far better than the free stuffs.
For example, if someone wants to sell an audio game based on baseball,
it'd probably be a hard contest since Jim Kitchen's got a free one out
there that is already real nice. But we cannot degrade Jim for that.

No one ever kicked ass by saying I can't.

Re: [Audyssey] brain teezer

2009-09-09 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Nicol,
I once tried an Opticon maching at a friend's hous so I know a little about
it.

The company that made it stopped about ten years ago.
It had about a hundred bumps in a finger shaped curve that vibrated when
shown dark shapes.
Theis was connected to a camera thet sent the despaly the view of what it
was seeing.
You could read but very slow, one letter at a time and you had to recognize
the forms of the print letters.
It had the advantage of being able to display everything the camera looked
at, computer screens, money, labels of cans and even handwriting.

It was expensive I think about $4000 and was sold by Telesensory Systems.
Another company bought the rights to produce the device but they haven't
yet.

Wow phil, this is interesting history!
Well, I am not going to try and differ from you at all, but actually I have
a different answer to the riddle in mind.
Ok, so here is another clue.
This person, she is a female, did not really invent the opticon, as phil
just now indicated who the real inventor is.
But this woman can, however be called some kind of opticon inventor before
the real inventor really invented it.
So guys, keep those thinking caps on.
You are going to laugh loud when I give the answer to this riddle.
You are going to call me the most original person; the person with the most
original imagination.
Just wait until tomorrow afternoon.
Sheesh, I know its long until then but just wait.
Until then, try decipher the riddle.

[Audyssey] the Jehovah's witnesses viewpoint on gaming: 3 articles

2009-09-09 Thread Nicol
Hi all
My mom is still today a jehovah' witness.
I was reared as a Jehovah witness but I have finally quit them, deciding
that I do not find Jesus amongst them.
Anyway, my mom sent me 3 articles.
The articles comes from a software package called watchtower library
that baptized Jehovah witnesses gets for a small price.
So my mom pulled the articles from there.
2 of them, reflects the view of the Jehovah witnesses about pc and video
gaming.
Obviously, they are aming at the sighted gamer, but you might find
interesting what they had to say about computer and video gaming. There is
an article about video and computer games in general and then there is an
article on role playing games where they made a few negative comments.
I would very much like some of your's opinions on the first and/or second
articles.
The third article is about toys children made themselves in the ancient
days.
Please let me know what you think about these articles.
Me personally, I feel that the Jehovah witnesses is too strict but others
might differ from me.
I have put all 3 articles in one document.

Re: [Audyssey] the Jehovah's witnesses viewpoint on gaming:3 articles

2009-09-09 Thread Louise Keel

Hi everyone.

I too was raised as a Jehovah's witness and my childhood was blighted by its
radicalism. I also quit as soon as I was able to, and it took some doing!
The point is, parents do have the right to decide what kind of computer and
video games they will allow their kids to play, because they are parents.
But in my view, once you become an adult, no one, no one has the right to
tell anyone else what they must or must not play for relaxation. This is up
to everyone's indevidual conscience. I spend a lot of time smashing up Old
Man Stanley's house. this does not mean I'm going to suddenly get it into my
head to go out and start wrecking homes here. it's. a. game!

And I may also add, in case I may be accused of predjudice, that Jehovah's
witnesses are far from the only Christian fundamentalists who try to tell
others what to play, watch, listen to, read, think. It's not on. That is, I
hasten to add, only my opinion.

Best

Lulu Keel.

Now faith, hope, love abide, these three. But the greatest of these is love.

To each his own, as long as nobody forces their religion or
religious organisations on me.
Just do not like radicals among those groups, who force
their beliefs on their kids or abandon them when they try
to get away from it. That is taking things to extremes.

It's kind of funny. Someone emailed me the other day asking me that if I
am a Christian, why did I make an adult-oriented game. And truth be
told, regardless of my beliefs, I look at music, games, and television
as simply that. Music, games, and television. I know that my game is not
real and that the people in it are not real. All which can be done is
hope that the person playing my game, or any game for that matter, know
that the games are not real. I have a wife and kids and I would not want
my kids playing my adult game, but if my kids were adults and wanted to
do so, more power to them.

Live and let live is what should be done.

[Audyssey] the size of messages

2009-09-09 Thread Nicol
HI all
I do not simply wanbt to give you a simple reminder to trim down messages as
I am not a moderator, but I wish to share a tip with you guys which helped
me trim down messages easily.
You can easily check the size of the message you are writing.
Once you have finished writing what you have said, press escape and choose
yes to have it saved in your drafts.
This is, of course, if you use Microsoft outlook.
I'm not sure about outlook express.
Now go into your drafts folder and the message you just saved will be at the
top.
Now press alt plus enter for the properties dialogue.
Route jaws to pc with num pad insert plus numpad dash.
Press page up and home.
Now you can review the screen from the top.
You will see various information, amongst other things, the size of the
message.
Even if jaws tells me the size of my post is 9 kb, I try to trim it as it
might not go through, because remember the limit is 8 kb.
So I find this properties dialogue very useful to check on the size of a
post I'm writing.
It also helps if you send your posts to lists in plain text format.
If you send it in html, the non text portions of the message causes it
easily to go over the size limit and I understand rich text willalso
increase the size quickly.
I hope everybody found these tips helpfull.

Re: [Audyssey] the Jehovah's witnesses viewpoint on gaming: 3 articles

2009-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Nicol,
I think the thing to keep in mind here is it it is all a matter of
perspective. As far as a Christian articles goes the articles you posted
were will written, fairly balanced, and does a fairly decent job of
explain the Christian point of view. They were fair in saying games such
as sports games like Basketball, Baseball, etc are perfectly ok to play
while condemning games like mortal Kombat for being too violent. This is
to be expected seeing as a game like Mortal Kombat would definitely not
per mote good Christian values. I think the over all thing too remember
here is not to become a religious extremist, and try and tell everybody
what they can read, play, watch, do, etc.
There are things I personally disagree with such as the fact the article
says that magic is evil, satanic, and an abomination to God. I know that
the bible does indeed say this, but some religious groups takes it to
extremes such as condemning all books, games, movies, etc that has the
slightest hint of magic. In the passed Christians use to burn people at
the stake or hang them for practicing witchcraft and magic regardless if
it was good or evil, white magic or black magic, harmless or harmful.
All are examples of how someone can take things to extremes. Weather
magic is evil or not is completely a matter of perspective.
Many Christians are raised to believe magic is evil, sinful, and are
encouraged to avoided. As a result they reject books, movies, games,
toys, and even groups that practices magic. Since the bible discourages
magic they think their opinion is right and justified.
However, someone born as a Wiccan would completely disagree. Wiccans
believe in practicing white magic for such uses as love, fertility,
healing, and other righteous purposes. A true Wiccan would never use
magic to harm or hurt another person. So obviously they would not
believe themselves or the practicing of white magic as evil.
never-the-less many Christians would insist that the Wiccans were evil
sinners. After all, it hasn't been that long ago when Christians were
burning witches at the stake for doing nothing more harmful than fixing
a healing potion made from natural herbs to cure someone's sickness.
Bottom line, I think we all need to use our personal judgment when
determining what is good or evil rather than take it from someone else.
I play various roll playing games like Sryth that are in my opinion
harmless, but a Christian would declare as evil because of the magic,
undead creatures, and other accult elements in the game. Rather than
base my opinion on some minister's point of view i look at the aim or
intent of the game, and compare it to my own personal values and
beliefs. I would never play anything that I personally disagreed with,
and certainly wouldn't tell others with different opinions not to play
game x. I believe that everyone has the freedom, the right, to make his
or her own decisions provided they don't harm others in the process.

Hi Nicol,
I once tried an Opticon maching at a friend's hous so I know a little

it.
The company that made it stopped about ten years ago.
It had about a hundred bumps in a finger shaped curve that vibrated when
shown dark shapes.
Theis was connected to a camera thet sent the despaly the view of what it
was seeing.
You could read but very slow, one letter at a time and you had to
recognize

the forms of the print letters.
It had the advantage of being able to display everything the camera looked
at, computer screens, money, labels of cans and even handwriting.
It was expensive I think about $4000 and was sold by Telesensory Systems.
Another company bought the rights to produce the device but they haven't
yet.

that baptized Jehovah witnesses gets for a small price.
So my mom pulled the articles from there.
2 of them, reflects the view of the Jehovah witnesses about pc and video
gaming.
Obviously, they are aming at the sighted gamer, but you might find
interesting what they had to say about computer and video gaming. There
is
an article about video and computer games in general and then there is
an

article on role playing games where they made a few negative comments.
I would very much like some of your's opinions on the first and/or second
articles.
The third article is about toys children made themselves in the ancient
days.
Please let me know what you think about these articles.
Me personally, I feel that the Jehovah witnesses is too strict but
others

might differ from me.
I have put all 3 articles in one document.

Re: [Audyssey] the Jehovah's witnesses viewpoint on gaming: 3articles

2009-09-09 Thread Allan Thompson
This is a pretty deep topic and I hope I can throw my two cents in without
stepping on too many toes, grin.
Games in and of themselves are something the human race has done since day
one, and it is an excellent tool that teaches, trains and challenges us in
many ways. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with gaming in my opinion.
Now christians and games is one of those topics that gets a lot of people
moved to explain themselves one way or another. Mostly, and I have run into
this a lot, is that the common misconception is that christians only reason
for living is to force everyone else to behave too soothe our own
sensebilities. Christians do not exist for that purpose. They were put on
earth to simply light a candle and show the way. It is then everyone elses
free will choice to take it or not, and then live with the results of that
choice whatever that may be.
Now does game content matter to a christian? I think it matters just as much
as it matters to everyone else christian or not. We play what we like, and
we ignore what we don't like. Yet can game content for christians be allowed
for them to play if it seems to contradict biblical views? I hope I can sum
it up a bit.
Magic in the bible is condemned because it was the practice of someone
taking someone or something else and treating those as GOD rather then the
LORD. Thus it is considered idolatry. An example to explain this thought
process better is this: You have a student who you are teaching braille.
Yet every time the student has an issue or problem with braille, they go
running to someone across the hall for answers, rather then to yourself.
They then come back and start doing things the wrong way, and you have to
correct and try to get them back on track again. Eventually, it gets so bad
you just tell that student to go learn braille from the other person, why
keep wasting your time.
This is just an example of the thought process behind the scripture so
please don't get upset at that.
The magic in video games is usually not like that at all. Instead it is more
tactical for strategic battles. You can easily replace a fireball for a
grenade, a magic missile for a bullet, a medikit in exchange for a heal
wounds spell. So I don't really see any issue with it, personally.
Now for the christian gamer, it isn't the action alone, but the desire as
lust or greed that is condemned as a sin. So when a christian plays a game
with controversial content, there comes along an internal check to see what
the game is getting into your heart and thought process. That means that
adult content can get into your head, just like excessive violence,
profanity, or similar type things. If a christian believes that they have no
issues with that kind of thing, that is between that person and GOD, but if
they get convicted, and they play it anyway, that leads to trouble. So
essentialy, there is no rule saying thou must play pac man but thou must
not play space invaders, grin. Perhaps the biggest problem christians might
have with games is for it to become an obsession, and not done in
moderation.

Re: [Audyssey] the Jehovah's witnesses viewpoint on gaming:3 articles

2009-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Well, from a strictly Christian point of view your heart and mind are
suppose to belong to God. Therefore not only are your actions suppose to
be pure but your thoughts should be as well. Many Christians believe
that by watching certain movies, playing certain video games, reading
certain books, your thoughts will be filled with sin, worldliness, and
take your mind off of God. You'll be distracted by things like extreme
violence, sex, and alternative values rather than being pure in mind as
well as deed.
Personally I don't feel by playing a violent fighting game or playing an
adult interactive fiction game that makes me a bad person. However, like
you I wouldn't necessarily let my five year old son play them. Some of
the games I've played are over the top when it comes to blood, guts, and
gore. While that might be suitable content for an adult watching a guys
brains get blown out of the back of his head is certainly not childhood
content. It is far too graphic and is overkill when it comes to the
blood, guts, and gore factor in my opinion. In that sense I agree with
the article Nicol posted. Some of the games are too violent, and could
tame down some of the blood, guts, and gore factor.
When it comes to the adult interactive fiction games like yours I see it
in the same light as pornography. I don't have a problem with
pornography as long as it is between two consenting adults, and it
doesn't get too carried away. A Christian may disagree with me on
religious grounds, but I'm of an age to decide weather I can or can not
purchase material like that or not. In the end it is a matter of choice
here.

Raul A. Gallegos wrote:
It's kind of funny. Someone emailed me the other day asking me that if
I am a Christian, why did I make an adult-oriented game. And truth be
told, regardless of my beliefs, I look at music, games, and television
as simply that. Music, games, and television. I know that my game is
not real and that the people in it are not real. All which can be done
is hope that the person playing my game, or any game for that matter,
know that the games are not real. I have a wife and kids and I would
not want my kids playing my adult game, but if my kids were adults and
wanted to do so, more power to them.

Live and let live is what should be done.

Re: [Audyssey] a question for you mainstream guys out there and those who played the old nintendo games before losing sight

2009-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Nicol,
Actually, Packman was originally released in 1982 for the Atari 2600
console. It did not have a dot detector, because it wasn't needed. A
sighted person could see the entire maze on screen and could see where
all of the dots were. All a person had to do is move his little Packman
character--a yello ball with eyes--to the dot in question and eat it.

Nicol wrote:

Did the original pack man game also had a dot detector like phil's pack man
game which you can turn on and off?

try pressing ctrl+f2 repeatedly until you get Default speech output is now sent

file.
Yeah, after having checked it is, but I messed up. it says f2, not ctrl+f2. So

Re: [Audyssey] a question for you mainstream guys out there and thosewho played the old nintendo games before losing sight

2009-09-09 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Nicol,
I used to play Pacman when I was sighted.
There was no dot detector as it was not necessary.
The player had a birds eye view of the maze.
So the player could see where they were, and where all the dots were, and
where the ghosts were at any second.
Draconis created this type of map for Dynoman to show you all the things in
each maze represented by a sound and I borrowed that concept for the Sarah
game. I think not too many people use the map feature as it is a difficult
concept.

So this made the real pacman easier to play.
One other difference, the original Pacman moved much faster than my version,
but so did the four ghosts.

Phil

[Audyssey] Simutronics Gemstone IV with ZMud, has anyone played this mud?

2009-09-09 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hello folks,

I stumbled on the Simutronics muds, and decided to check out the Gemstone IV
mud. From what I have been able to gather, the front end clients they offer
such as wizard and stormfront are not the most speech friendly programs out
there. grin

I did find out that zmud has support for these games. I am currently using
jaws 10 with zmud 7.21, and I must say that when using jaws with screen echo
set to all, I find that zmud does a really good job at rebuffering the
screen. Jaws doesn't seem to repeat lines, and it does appear to read all
the new information that comes in. Of course, you have to use the jaws
cursor to review the screen, and when a new line of text comes in the screen
will scroll, making it sometimes dificult to keep on the same line. All
that said, I am managing quite nicely with the beginning quests.

I was just wondering if any folks on this list have played the Simutronics
games with zmud, specifically Gemstone IV, and may have some more tips they
could share?

Before anyone asks, due to the nature of the login and authentication of
simutronics games, you can't use other clients such as VIP Mud or Mushclient
to play. At least this is my understanding.

Jeremy
