Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...
well there are several phaser sounds the romulan and klingon torps sound just about the same my theory is that the origionall modder ran out of sfx. At 03:59 p.m. 12/06/2010, you wrote: Hi Shaun, Oh, that could be. Haven't watched DS9 in a while so I have forgotten what the claxon sounds like. Still I'm a bit surprised the red alert for the Sovereign-Class ships seen in Star Trek 8 was replaced by another claxon sound. To me that just sounds off. You know what I mean? However, some of the other sounds are pretty good. I like the fact someone mixed the weapons with the ship sounds. That made it more realistic in some cases. [Audyssey] Any Hints on Visual Studio with ASP1.net
Ok Hi. Lately, I have gotten the bug to finally Jaws script the Abandon ware Stock Car Racing game. After many years of scripting Strat sport games, I finally felt confident to attack this project. Although the Indy Auto Racing game is similar in design the on field track part of the game is different. So, in a way I am scripting 2 games at once. But, running into a run block with the Stock Car racing game. Whie the INdy car game the .exe files all work on Vista, the older Stock Car game has a file that uses a 16 bit system. It may work on XP, where I am able to get the window to come up with out the full screen error. Jaws is not able to see what is in this window. The program that is giving me fits is only a input form. This allows the gamer to input Driver's info like name car number number of starts, wins finishes and so on. The output is stored in a text file, a flat database. Now I have looked at disassembling and other things to void the most likely answer. Program it. AS I speak I am downing load VS 2008 with ASP.net and plan on getting the Jaws scripts for it. Also, picked some docs on how to and teaching docs about the subject. What I am looking for is some hint on starting and usng Visual Studio with Jaws to help me out. Being an old programmer like myself do need hints. So, any hint also on making a form to create a flat text file database would mean a lot to me and others for the 2 games. Re: [Audyssey] startrek games
Hi tom. I do take your point extremely. I must confess this is why i myself never have much interest in mods of superliam, pipe or similar because I'd rather play the game the way the developer intended. As a life long tolkeen fan (and a pretty major Dr. who fan as well), i also take your point about cannon (in fact some of the messings up of tolkeen I've seen recently in the indorcements of the peter Jaxon films, have really got on my whick). It strikes me however, that the cannon debate is something of a separate issue. Afterall, suppose you created your own scifi stratogy game, like galaxy ranger, then (as in lone wolf), the only existing cannon would be that you, as originator of the game create not a huge amount of extra information and resources as in startrek, dr. who, etc. In terms of game creation tools, it strikes me it depends entirely upon the game it's content, and the creator's choice. games that are heavily driven by plot, such as Mega man or even Sryth, are as based on the author's intentions as films or books. They have a distinct story (allbeit that that can change due to corperate pressure and other factors). For those games, mucking about with game content to the point where that story is removed seems as bad as someone I once knew who wrote a harry potter fanfic where draco Malfoy got together with hermione granger. when i asked how these two characters actually got together at all, and what had changed, she just replied well it's my fanfic so they just do which seemed intrinsically wrong to me. On the other hand, take psudocu. You have a game with no rules or logic outside it's own nature. For a developer of a sudocu game to claime that the sudocu puzles they'd personally set in the game were irrevocable and should not be changed would be distinctly unreasonable. Btw, this has actually happened with the boulderdash puzle's action games. Even though released with a level editer, and entirely based on puzles where you collect diamonds in a mine with litle or no plot, First star software did at one time claime that their levels were the only ones possible. thankfully now, after people have been creating bd levels for years, and even new bd games with extra elements such as emerald mine and supaplex that claime has been removed. It strikes me editable games are betwene these two extremes, absolute cannon works of art, and symple puzles, and the extent the developer decides to make them editable should vary accordingly. It is however true that editers and level creators can greatly expand a games' replayability and content, and give users distinctly fun things to do with a game, look at Jim's golf game as an example. Perhaps therefore we need a balance, where some elements of a game are editable and others aren't, just like in the rail racer track creator where you can create new tracks, but not new upgrades for your racer which give you uba speed or unabalance the game. Ah, i'm probably getting the ship names from final conflict and trek 2000 mixed up slightly there, but you do see my point. but hold on a minute, didn't gul ducat get what for anyway on bajor thanks to captain sisco? Or is stfc set earlier in time than that, though as the Klingons, romulans and! cardassians are all attacking at once, I'm actually not sure when it might be set, hmmm, maybe you could considder replacing the Klingons with the dominian to give the game a deffinate time in the dominian war. yes, copying backups takes a while. i currently have about 130 gb of stuff to backup each time onto my external drive which takes a good couple of hours. However, what I usually do is set it running while I'm doing something else like playing a game or watching a film, or else just leave my pc on over night while it goes on. pluss of course, you can set several folders going at once which speed things up. Generally though, having all my stuff safe is more than worth it, and as I said, it's not really to bad because I don't have to sit around and watch it backup. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] Final Conflict and Treck 2000
Hi Dark, Oh, as far as timeline goes it would definitely have to be set in time long before the final episode of DS9. After all during the last season the Defiant got destroyed by the Breen, Cardassia Prime was basicly leveled as a result of the war, the Founders returned to the Gamma Quadrant with Odo, Captain Sisko basicly ended up trapped with Dukat in the wormhole, and Kira was promoted to starbase commander in Sisko's place. They pretty much ended everything in the last few episodes of Deep Space 9 in a big way. However, when I wrote STFC there really wasn't a specific timeline involved. Actually, there really isn't a plot or story to it either. it was just basicly a shoot-m-up game with no real back story or cannon to it. Were I to write the game now I think I would redo that aspect of the game. For example, I could set it in the Dominion War. Instead of the enemies you have now you would be facing an allied force of Breen, Jemhadar, and Cardassian ships. In fact, at one point the game was exactly that way, but something changed my mind during development and I never changed it back to the Dominion War theme. On 6/12/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Ah, i'm probably getting the ship names from final conflict and trek 2000 mixed up slightly there, but you do see my point. but hold on a minute, didn't gul ducat get what for anyway on bajor thanks to captain sisco? Re: [Audyssey] Any Hints on Visual Studio with ASP1.net
Hi Gary, A few comments if I might. First, I don't know if you know this but Visual Studio 2008 is now out of date. Visual Studio 2010 Express was released not long ago and from what I can tell I'd recommend updating to it. I'm currently working on Window-Eyes set files for VS 2010, and i don't know what if any Jaws scripts exist for it. However, VS 2010 now supports .Net 4.0 as well as comes with a stripped down version of the Windows 7.1 Platform SDK which is necessary for up to date support for XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Second, as far as getting Visual Studio setup with Jaws or any other screen reader, for that matter, basicly just undock any windows you don't need. I also find disabling intellisense helps the screen readers from flipping out when it tries to autocomplete some code and you don't want it displaying x number of options etc. HTH On 6/12/10, Gary Whittington gary...@cableone.net wrote: Ok Hi. Re: [Audyssey] Has anyone actually managed to beat Q-9
Probably nothing important. As for your question though, you may well have to start over since you should save as many shields as possible for the death world, particularly levels two and three. My advice is don't hurry. Since monsters seem to be triggered at certain spots if you try to run you'll have more monsters after you than if you move more slowly. Re: [Audyssey] startrek games
Hi Dark, Yeah, that's essentially what I was getting at. I don't see a problem giving a customer level editors, track editors, whatever in a game where it isn't tightly based on a specific story line. Thus adding custom content doesn't greatly effect the game in a drastic way. For example, Jim Kitchen's Monopoly. I see the game more as a Monopoly Engine where you can add custom boards, tokens, and money to suit your interests. That's fine, because replacing the triditional Monopoly board with a Star Trek themed Monopoly board doesn't totally change the game. It just gives you a more customized game to play is all. As a developer I'm fine with that. However, if I gave my customers the ability to add new content to Mysteries of the Ancients that would be a different story. Since the game is a lot like Indiana Jones, Rogue Angel, and Tomb Raider there is a lot of history and mythology wrapped up in creating a game like that. As an avid fan of history and ancient mythology a game like that is the perfect medium for me to explore those interests in a playable format, and pass my interest on to others in the audio games community in the process. Nothing would turn me off more than someone to get their hands on a level editor and then add monsters and characters from say Harry Potter to the game. Such a modification wouldn't be appreciated by me at all as it would completely go against everything I spent time creating. Like you I've read my share of fan fiction. Some of it is very good, and some of it can't be called anything other than weird. The fan fiction story about Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger getting together is a sad case in point of how the author completely ignored cannon in favor of creating his/her own story out of it. On one level I understand that, but for fans like me changing a story that drasticly to suit someone's own personal interests is just distasteful. I remember this one time where I was browsing through some Tomb Raider fan fic, whichhappens to be one of my favorite vidio games of all time, and discovered a story that majorly turned me off. Now, I don't have anything against lezbians, someone choosing to be gay, but I don't appreciate someone completely rewriting the main character's sexual preferences just to suit their own sexual preferences. Which is exactly what happened in this particular story. Everything I've ever read about Lara Croft, official cannon that is, indicates she is straight. No indication she is into other women, or that she is AC-DC. So with that in mind I was not exactly pleased to discover in this particular story she had a girl friend, they were kissing in the story, were lovers, and it seams the entire adventure was simply there to glue this love story together about Lara and her female lover. To put it nicely it was completely distasteful in my personal opinion. I remember posting a comment about it asking why the author decided to change Lara's character so drasticly, converting her from straight to gay, and the author's reply was predictable enough. She heatedly responded that she is gay, she thinks Lara should be gay, and if I didn't like it I was being predigest and so on. That wasn't the case at all, of course, and I figured it wasn't worth arguing over. It simply was a case of me not really liking the way she represented Lara's character in the story that was so drasticly different from the cannon that I couldn't get into the story at all. I guess being straight myself it was sort of difficult excepting this new version of Lara having female romantic interests. Not at all how I ever imagined her that's for sure. I think when it comes down to it that is a major reason why copyright holders discurrage any kind of fan fiction. Part of it is that it infringes on their ability to create and market new content, and part of it is some fans just don't care about preserving the story or ideas in their original form. Some authors just don't appreciate their work being turned into something else other than the way they imagined it. As the author/creator it is easy to see it as your idea, your work, and certainly don't want people to change it for some reason. Re: [Audyssey] startrek games
If I were able to change your game into one that I like better, changing the characters, theme, music, and whatever else I liked better, and then someone got a copy of your modified game, thinking that it was your creation, they might not buy anything more from you because the did not like what you had produced. That would be totally bogus! A lot of gamers base future purchases on prior work, and this might hurt your business. Even if I put disclaimers with my modifications, they still might unfairly judge you on my modifying. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, June 12, 2010 4:54 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] startrek games Hi Dark, Yeah, that's essentially what I was getting at. Re: [Audyssey] Whip in MOTA
Hi Damien, The leather whip really isn't a strong weapon. It can take several lashes to take an enemy down. About the only advantage it has over using your bare fists is range. Like most leather bull whips it is close to 10 feet long or 3 meters if you use the metric system. Its most practical use is against enemy skeletons which are easy to knock apart with the whip. [Audyssey] Game Modding was StarTrek Games
Hi Charles, Yes, and there is another more serious issue here to consider. With copyrights involved some game mods might not be strictly legal since I figure the average gamer out there isn't too particular about what copyrights are attatched to sounds, music, and game characters, etc. They may accidently create a mod that would result in the creator of said game to get in trouble if not themselves as well for ripping the sounds and music in the first place. For instance it is a well known fact Mysteries of the Ancients was written in the style and spirit of Tomb Raider. No doubt about it. It could be easily modded with official Tomb Raider sounds and music essentially turning it into an unofficial accessible Tomb Raider game. I've actually done that myself. However, such a mod released to the public could result in fines being served up for copyright infringement. That's not exactly something anyone really wants here. On 6/12/10, Charles Rivard woofer...@sbcglobal.net wrote: If I were able to change your game into one that I like better, changing the characters, theme, music, and whatever else I liked better, and then someone got a copy of your modified game, thinking that it was your creation, they might not buy anything more from you because the did not like what you had produced. That would be totally bogus! A lot of gamers base future purchases on prior work, and this might hurt your business. Even if I put disclaimers with my modifications, they still might unfairly judge you on my modifying. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Has anyone actually managed to beat Q-9
Hi Lori, Yup, beaten it a few times on easy, only ever managed once on a higher difficulty than that though. Best advice I can give you is: Pay attention to the speed each creature moves at and how many hits you'll need to take them out. The idea being that over time you'll develop the ability to judge distances to accurately attack and retreat, making sure that you can take out each creature in the least time possible and without taking any damage. Try to never ever miss a falling bonus item, but save up the ones that you can choose to trigger such as shields for when you really, really need them. The enemies are spectacularly daft in this game, so there's a lot to be said for luring them into situations. Two good examples would be to proceed through a force field thingy, reap what is hopefully a reward, go on a while to find something to chase you, and lure a few nasties back through it to try and observe a pattern of when it'd be a safe time to go back through it again. This way, you can end up with some pretty spectacular health levels that will last you a long time, assuming you don't fall into a pit of course. When you're good at judging enemy movement, you can also use the same luring technique to make the most of the times to use shields and pick off nasties left and right because their own attacks rebound upon them when the shield is active, dancing with a couple of bears is always fun with shields up. Lastly, be aware that as far as I know it's physically not possible for Q9 to take out a bear close up without getting clobbered at least once, so save up your rocks and pick them off from a distance wherever possible, it'll make a big difference to your health. Re: [Audyssey] Any Hints on Visual Studio with ASP1.net
Yeah,Ok, first Shawn, the games have a ASCII back ground to fill in the screen. This is a lot of characters symbols. I have gotten around them. And this was a lot of work to have Jaws not to say them and to just say the menu items. So, hang in there, I am realy close. I have finished the external scripting of the menus and other dialog boxes to work nickly with Jaws. But if racing is your bag and that being Stock Car, I will have news on a web site that uses Strategy and managing a race car and team. But first I want to check out the web site for blind friendlyness. To Tom, thanks I'll keep your email and add it to my folder where I unpacked the software. I am hoping only to is create a simple input form and an older version is OK with me. And while surfing I did not see any Jaws scripts for VS 2010. If I had yes, I would gone that way. So I'll update when there is some And I am not sure if my Vista computer will run it besides. This system has trouble installing the new Instant Messagerand Jaws 11. Smiles, but, yet this may end up fixing things. Your second item, sounds like to I need to turn of screen echo and just use the mouse to see whats happen. Thanks. I think what I need will be in the noice documentations where how to build a simple form. This will be worked on when I have spare time. But for now I am now looking to move to the next phase, being scripting the On Track enviroment. I have even learned some new trick in Jaws Scripting during the first phase. Well, not tricks, but finding what I can do and what I can not do with the scripting language. It's been fun and frustrating at the same time and that spells programming. But if some one who wants to join in the fun of this project and what to help in creating this input form for the Stock Car Racing Game, you can email me off list and I'll give you the specs that is needed. The input form is not big item in the game. It's used to create new Historical NASCAR seasons in side the Abandedware for the game to use on their own. That's why its not my next step and if I have to learn VS and # or whatever then so be it. But once I get the game scripted I have the game and the Jaws scripts on my web site with the Strat Sports games. Re: [Audyssey] Final conflict
Hi Lori, If I understand you right you are confused by the bearing system. That is in plotting a course at say 90 degrees? In that case this isn't specific to Star Trek, but is common for any kind of ship or aircraft for that matter. Instead of triditional North, South, East, and West directions you are familiar with they use the bearing system which ranges from 0 degrees to 359 degrees. I believe I discussed this at length in the manual, but if you haven't seen it here is a quick overview. Imagine your starship is in the center of a large circle. Using the absolute bearing system do north would be 0 degrees. If you turn to right you would be turning towards the East side of the map. which would be do East, therefore, would be 90 degrees. Once you turned around, do South, you would be facing 180 degrees. If you kept turning West eventually you would be facing West which is 270 degrees. Does that make sense? Now, to complicate matters for you there is absolute and relative bearing systems here. What I discussed above is the absolute bearing system used for navigation and plotting courses. There is another type of bearing system, relative bearing system, used for combat situations. Using the relative bearing system 0 degrees is dead ahead, the bow, and 180 degrees is behind or the stern of the ship. If something is 90 degrees to port that is directly to your left, and if it is 90 degrees to starboard it is directly to your right. So if an enemy starship was attacking 45 degrees to port that would mean it is 45 degrees left of the bow. Does that make sense? Hi Lori, In that case might I offer up a suggestion. in STFC 1.0 and 1.2 there is a way to use the autopilot system to get to known sectors of space. So if you set all of your ships to autopilot to the Klingon Empire, for example, all of them would head to that region of space where you would certainly encounter the Klingons in ship-to-ship combat. Well it's possible, but tough, especially with those demons (actually having first finished the game before they were added, I do sometimes wonder if they were a bit much). that being said, there are some techniques which are useful. I for instance always jump to multiplae hit a targit with my club, sinse it seems to give you faster hits. also, the slingshot is your friend for for bears. using a shiled and legging it is also if your stuck in a swarm of aliens. just persist, and you'll hopefully get there. btw, imho level 2 of the death world is harder than level 3 for some reason. Re: [Audyssey] startrek games
Hi Thomas, Harry Potter in the tomb? Now that would be interesting. Added a wand that allows you to cast spells. The boss in Level 1 has been replaced with a dementor, and you must find the instructions for the patronus charm before defeating it. Grin Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Saturday, June 12, 2010 4:54 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] startrek games Hi Dark, Yeah, that's essentially what I was getting at. Hi Brian, I feel that I cansafely say that as a person who has yet to beat the game 5 times running isn't too bad. What I usually do is start swinging my club before I hear the animals/demons coning, and if possible, I jump backwards in the death world. As for your question though, you may well have to start over since you should save as many shields as possible for the death world, particularly levels two and three. My advice is don't hurry. Since monsters seem to be triggered at certain spots if you try to run you'll have more monsters after you than if you move more slowly. Hi, Really? You destroyed a Borg Cube in a single turn? I don't remember being able to do that. At least not on the higher difficulty levels. Although, I do remember quite a lot of complaining back when STFC was in beta testing that the Borg were too hard to beat so I changed their stats. Apparently I made them two low now. Anyway, as for your view of creating a turn-based game with limits per turn that does make some sense. The Sovereign-Class ships can only fire 30 torpedoes at a time which constitutes a full spread. If I made the game more to Star Trek technical specs that should be all they can fire per turn which would make the game more drawn out, and you would have multiple turns to carry out a battle rather than whiping out one or more enemy ships in a single move. That would both be more difficult and realistic as far as a turn-based game goes. On 6/11/10, Dakotah Rickard dakotah.rick...@gmail.com wrote: Particularly, I would rather see a turn based game that limits what you can do per turn. You sort of set that up, limiting the number of phaser and torpedo shots per turn, but the limits were, likely, still too large. Especially if a borg cube can be destroyed in one go. I love realtime stuff, but if I had an honest preference, it'd be a turn based game that had some limits per turn. I'd also like to see more features that make use of impulse. The option is available in navigation, but it doesn't seem to have any real value. Hello, Also, learn the timing for the club. I find that if I use my thumb on the spacebar rather than my finger, I can swing the club at its fastest speed. I take out most enemies with the club. I agree about moving very slowly. I stop and wait whenever I hear something coming from the right. This way, I do not need to deal with more than four to six at a time. well I always like ingame mods. you need to buy the origional game before you can mod it. and you can only play the mods within the game you need to run them from a menu like in audioquake you can play the origional levels or the modded game. Some authors just don't

Re: [Audyssey] Sunday's Out of Sight events
charles why do you post these on here. I am not sure about the topic for this or not but I sertainly don't want these as I have no interest. I don't even know what all this is. It is loads of fun and will only take about an hour to play. Word Burst 9:00 PM eastern Hosted by Kathy Mertz Location: Games Anyone Do you love to play Outburst? Do you love words? Let's put the two together and play Word Burst! Word Burst is the same as Outburst, except that you don't call out items in categories, such as Elvis hits or makes of cars. Instead, the members of each team call out anagrams of the word I will give you. So come in and find the words within a word. Hope to see you there. Re: [Audyssey] Has anyone actually managed to beat Q-9
Oh it's relatively safe to run through the Jungle and Cave worlds but I'd take it slower during the mountain world and definitely the death world since those are when they really start to come after you. And of course the death world pulls out all the stops completely. About all you don't find there are gorillas. I wander if this was my origional issue. I never thought to not run during the game in any level. Therefore I wander the reason I am losing all the time is because I run. if this is so then I won't run at all and just see if I can do those levels. At 09:08 a.m. 13/06/2010, you wrote: Probably nothing important. As for your question though, you may well have to start over since you should save as many shields as possible for the death world, particularly levels two and three. My advice is don't hurry. Since monsters seem to be triggered at certain spots if you try to run you'll have more monsters after you than if you move more slowly. I've tried and tried but just can't seem to do it! I had 16 lives and am down to 12, even so I'm wondering if I should keep going or not, because A I want to win, and B I don't want to start over again until I've beaten the game at least once. I'm playing in easy mode, so I'd like to see insane. Smile While I love the game, sounds and music and first class voice acting I just want to win Any tips on getting through Death World? I've got a couple shields, and keep using them, but don't think i have enough to see me through the game. I'm only on level1 of Death world it's the fartherest I've gotten. Hope someone can give me a hand in the right direction. Thanks from Lori. I'm off to kick some demon!
