You could always try using Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Though of course, if
you want to use it only for a game, it would be a shade expensive.

hmmm sounds interesting.
One thing I'd like was something that did not use the ms speech recognisers
as for what ever reason installing office which installs its own engine
seems to break the other one, uninstalling office will not fix this and I
have no idea what must be done to get the other one working, I cam manually
get it working for a run through but yeah if there was something that could
use something not tied with the ms rec engine then cool.

games.
but hears the interesting bit its not only designed for fsx, but it has
support for over 60 other games, including half life and world of warcraft

apparrantly the program gives you responses based on your commands.
so just wondering has anyone experimented with this addon? it looks
potentially quite interesting, though my guess is it probably wouldn't be

Hi Aaron,
Well, assuming I created a simple text interface, similar to the Infocom
games, there wouldn't be any software dependancies to speak of. However,
seeing as the Braille Plus is a type of note taker device any game
written for it would have to be pretty bare bones. I don't know at this
point exactly how bare bones I plan to get with this game. I might
decide to go to a more action based roll playing game since I am getting
a lot of requests for something more like an FPS rather than a game book
style game.

It uses hmm, I can't remember. A popular console screen reader for TUI

the same for words, 1 2 and 3 the same for characters.

From the browser point of view, it uses minny mo, which is supposed to be
baby firefox. It seems to work with dynamic content. I have never tried to
play srith on it. Maybe I should to see how it works. if you did develop a
browser based game I'm betting it would be a really simple browser page
setup that the browser in question could handle just fine.

I was under the impression that xml was more structured so you could query

Plus, how would you validate your text file? You could compare the xml with

Well, I really dont' see any advantage in using xml over text files for

Hi Thomas,
I hear you. However, my question relates to the stage where you are writing
the story for the game in a word processor. Or, do you start writing
directly in a database?

If you go to http\://www.ffproject.com or http://www.projectaon.org, you
will find a number of downloadable game books. They are word documents
consisting of numbered sections. You choose the relevant section based upon
dice roles etc. My question relates to writing those numbered sections. When
I am writing the game story before writing the code, how do I keep track of
the different paths the character could follow?

Hi Praniv,
That is basically why you would use a scripting language such as perl,
javascript, or php. The scripting language can help keep track of where
you've been, what adventures you have completed, and so on. You could
store that info in a database or parce it out to a text file for later use.

 Hi Michael,
To use the steering wheel, you just plug it in and go pretty much. You can

set your own keys to the buttons on the wheel, depending on how many your
wheel has.
I use the logiTech Momo wheel myself, which is pretty popular, and you can

assign all the important readout keys to the buttons on the wheel.
The game is $39.95 and the file size is around 30Mb.
You can download a demo and find out more about the game at
www.blindAdrenaline.com
Keep in mind the demo is fairly old and just gives you a taste of the
game, no online racing or the ability to really customize and all to your
rail racer as in the full version.
Also, this is a game that takes practice to get good at, but because of
that, you will be able to play it and get enjoyment out of it far longer
than most audio games, especially once you start creating your own tracks
and sharing them with friends, and playing in the online tournaments we
host.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for clarifying that. I appreciate all those statistics and yes we do
have far bigger challenges to overcome. However, perhaps what is needed is
greater awareness even in these organisations about accessible games. For
example, I have not seen any game developers host any stalls in any of the
blindness conventions or major blindness technology conferences. I suspect
this is because most developers are single man operations and do this in
their spare time. To counteract this, perhaps a bunch of enthusiastic users
could put up the money and host stalls at blindness technology shows.

Hi Branav!

I am anxious for the new version of Lone Wolf, also. I haven't talked
with David for a long time. But, the last time we talked he said he was
about one third of the way in its programming. It takes a great deal of his
time. He is programming from bottom up for he is not able to add all the
new features everybody wants with the old version. It just was not designed
for all these uptdates. But, knowing David it will be an excellent game when
it is done. I would like to rent his engine to design games.
The reason I said I may need classes to learn programming is I may need
to know more about the computer and my questions could be answered in a
class. Tom gave me a couple web sites to checkout for programming books that
I could download and study. I have heard that jaws can be a problem with
some of the programming languages. My vision is not as good as it was a
couple of years ago and I have to be more reliant on the jaws program than I
was before.

Blessings!

[Audyssey] Disabling the laptop display using the laptop battery saver from techno-vision

2009-09-25 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

One technique that I have not seen discussed in the turning the monitor
off thread is the use of the laptop battery saver from techno-vision
Systems. I use the product everyday and it disables the display as soon as
you get to the desktop. The battery saver is a small device shaped like the
jack of an older CRT monitor. It plugs into the video out port of your
laptop. It works by simulating a monitor so you route your laptop's display
output to the device such that the laptop screen is disabled. You use the
same technique when connecting to an lcd projector.

Note:
I am not getting a sales commission for the above but am just a satisfied
customer. You can see the product at:

Some questions for you in order to get you started playing again:

What screen reader do you use? If it is JAWS, I can send you a free chess
program that you can play against, as well as connect to the Internet to
play against others, although I have not tried this feature out as of yet.

Do you have an adapted chess set for blind people to use, rather than having

to use speech to explore a chess board during the game?

I can also help you, probably one on one, as to which pieces move where and
the basic rules of the game. Or, there is a totally free correspondence
course, either on audio cassettes or in braille, available from the Hadley
School for the Blind. All course materials are yours to keep after you
complete the course, including a very nice adapted chess set.

Hmmm, certainly intreaguing, though to be perfectly honest I wasn't even
thinking of something with that level of complexity, I was just thinking of
a substitute for what a sited person can naturally do with a pen and
paper, or a word file and good aski art skills for that matter.

The best substitute I've found thus far is table creating in word, though
that has a lot of drawbacks, not the least of which is that coordinates

wise, you don't know how large the map will be, so don't know how large to
make the table, pluss there are no functions such as mapping.

I'm also not sure if the map maker in the gma engine would be more complex
than necessary, ie, settings for how large or small rooms and corridors

are for example, but as I've had no experience at all working with the
engine (though certainly quite a bit playing it's games, lol!), I'm not sure

on this point.

 Hi Dark,
David could if he chose, separate the map making function from his GMA
game engine and allow anyone to make maps while playing other games.
For example if you have the map maker in one window and switch to a game
in a second window, you could walk along a path in the game, then switch
back to the map maker program and create the same path.
You could even add notes or numbers inserted in the path telling you
things such as went in this room, or this is the entrance to the kitchen.
or trapped a monster in this room.
As you are in the map maker there will be no monsters to attack you.
You could for example map the corridors of Shades of doom marking what is
behind each door and then when you play the game again, use the map
program to guide you as to what to do.
It would be like a physical walk through document but designed to match
 the game floor plan.
As I said David could do this but I don't see it as a commercial product,
so it would have to be a free program.

the ability to mark a location, read all used boxes in a current column or
row (handy for reviewing down tunnels, the ability to read out marked
locations etc.

With the amount of text adventures, gamebooks, and even audio games which
have complex maps, i think this would be something which could really helpp.

I've read the artical on using pins in a pizza box, but I must confess I've
never personally found that method too convenient to work in construction.

I actually got this idea from playing Eamon, which has that really useful

constructed to do it, - especially with adequate read keys.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

nice job done there, I'm glad to hear that cross-platform support is

 Hi all,
As most of you know I am currently updating MOTA 0.5 to use the new cross
platform Genesis engine that uses open source game development APIs such
as SDL rather than DirectX. However, I do need your input on something
since there obviously is going to be a rather big difference in the way
speech is handled with the new engine.
In the current 0.4 release of MOTA the game gets DirectX and Sapi 5
support from the Windows specific engine. Since there is no Sapi 5 on Mac
OS and Linux the newer Genesis engine uses wav files of pre-recorded
speech to announce status messages, menus, etc rather than any OS
 specific
TTS engine. There are several other game developers that do it this way
like Draconis, GMA, and BSC so this isn't something new for accessible
games. It is also just easier to do it this way when building a cross
platform engine rather than trying to support Gnome-Speech, Apple Voices,
and Sapi 5 with the same game engine. Which brings me to my question.
I was going to have someone do the voice overs for the menus, status
messages, for 0.5 but do to other commitments and scheduling our plans
fell through. For the time being i am going to have to record all the
messages using a TTS engine such as the ATT Voices, Scansoft Voices,
Cepstral Voices, etc. If you had a choice which of the following voices
 do
 you personally prefer?

 ATT Crystal
 ATT Mike
 Scansoft Daniel
 Scansoft Emily

Well, I have to admit the intellisense under VS 2008 isn't very screen

No more intellisense no more problem as far as I am concerned. It is not a

 Hi,
I'd just like to add to this that the entire Visual Studio 2008 sweit
of IDEs are fairly screen reader friendly out of the box. Yeah, you
need to sit down and figure out how to use them, and hiding a few
child windows certainly helps, but I successfully use Visual C++,
Visual C#, and Visual Basic 2008 on a daily basis without too many
screen reader hangups. So right there are three programming languages
I listed with three accessible IDEs and compilers.

Hi Ron,

The websites I mentioned are running their own gaming engines. They have
converted sets of game books into HTML format and are then running them
through their engines. Out of the two of them, www.ffproject.com has the
more advanced engine. It does automatic dice roles, score tracking on its
own. All you need to do to play the game is to click on links in a browser.

There are however some points in the game books is specially on
www.projectaon.org that could be made more accessible. For example, I
distinctly remember a graphical puzzle that had to be solved before one
could take one's ship in a given direction. Other than that, these games are
extremely accessible.

I'm sure these game books would have been mentioned on this list before.

 Hi. Tom.

Intreaguing indeed. I certainly take the point about adding captioning for

sounds in games being comparatively symple, but I believe the problem here

is that this isn't often done, and as games get more inclined to use full
animated cutscenes or spoken dialogue people with hereing imparements are
 having more problems.

Perception of disability and what harm it precisely does is actually part
of my phd thesis, sinse i'm attempting to formulate a new deffinition and

 certain problems.

One odd thing though, is that blindness is rarely referenced in the
academic literature on disability itself. There's a lot said about
deafness, and quite a bit about paraplegia, but comparatively litle on
blindness, and I do admit this contributes to my belief about game access
issues for those disabilities being more obviously addressed by devs.

Also, there is the question of what games are looked at. I'd guess
interactive fiction games for example would be near impossible for someone

who couldn't quickly use the keyboard, and while they could play many
online games, and indeed some like the flash ones which are not Vi
accessible, they'd have issues every time they were required to fill in a
 text field.

while I know there are solutions to this sort of problem, how efficient
they might be, and how much effort they take to work could be another
 matter.

 Beware the Grue!

 Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 2 Released!

2009-03-09 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Thomas,

I finally had the chance to play a little with beta 2. I have not read all
my messages yet so I hope beta 3 is not out.

1. There are points in the game where the view command fails. That is, let
us say that I'm moving from side to side. Once I pick up a few objects or
fight with a few hostiles, I find that hitting the v key does not do
anything. I need to take a few steps to the right and a few steps to the
left and then perhaps the command will start working.

2. I am no longer being thrown out of the game temporarily as I was in beta
1.

3. I have played the game running exclusively as a limited user in windows
XP professional. I have not had any problems that I could relate to running
as a limited user. At least, nothing showed up in the Windows event logs.

4. I have tried to save the game using the function keys. However, nothing
has happened when I have pressed these keys. Have you been able to implement
this feature?
Other notes:
I now managed to get a little further in the game. I was able to get on to
the ledge, crossed the statue, kill a few more hostiles, swim across the
water, take whatever I could on the other side and then swim back.

Well I finally completed missions 1 and 2 this morning. That aircraft
carrier had been frustrating the living bejesus out of me but I finally
managed to get a targetting solution and unloaded all four torpedos into it.
Turned out I only needed two or three but I wasn't about to take any chances
on it getting away from me again. So Mission 1 was a breeze. Mission 2 was a
lot more tense what with the mine fields but I managed not to collide with
any of them. I took out the first oil platform with my deck gun but that
took too long and so I took out the others with torpedos. May have been
unnecessary but ah well. Now all I gotta do is wait for David to send me my
unlock code and I can start playing the later missions and maybe creating
some of my own as well.

Awesome! When I first tried the game, I didn't think I would get into it.
It just didn't click with me. But, when I played mission 2 and found that I

would be attacked by the destroyer if I wasn't careful, and that I had to
dive for safety, then go and get that darned ship, yeah! I was beginning to

really like it. There was more to the game than just shooting at passing
ships from a stationary point. Once I bought the game, those other 15
missions gave it more replay value, and then I started on those user created

missions! I'm still hooked on that game. Happy subbing!

At Thomas' suggestion I downloaded the demo yesterday, or rather
redownloaded it and spent quite a lot of time on it. Guess it pays to pay
attention to mission briefings! I didn't realize that in Mission 1 you
don't necessarily have to move from your current location to target the
ships. So this morning I was playing it again and, while I managed to take

out a few ships I accidentally collided with a sinking cargo ship. Y'know,

submarines don't like that much LOL. But I decided I liked the game enough

to place an order, so with luck I ought to be receiving my key soon. All I

can say is I'm wondering now why the game never really caught my attention

before. It's proving to be a lot of fun.

Hi,
True, but then I'd have to modify the games to work on mobile phones,
get a compiler for a mobile phone, and should probably have a mobile
phone to test them. At this point I really wasn't thinking of putting a
lot of work into them. Although, I certainly do like the idea of
updating them, make sure the C++ code meets current standards, recompile

 by Phil Vlasak.
 Beware the Grue!
Hearing about this group for years, its existence finally peeked its nose
from beneath the rock where it was biding its time to strike.
The GREW, or Game Researchers of Unrelenting Excellence, was formed to do
away with and discourage those not worthy to play games.
Their Chairman of the Bored, code name Dark, led his minions to
unrelenting messing up the heads of fledgling game enthusiasts.
From suggesting dial up users to download games so large they would tie
their computers up for days, to sending neophyte game players on wild
goose chases after non-existing game sites, the GRUE kept up an
unrelenting pressure to make game play fit only for those worthy to leap
 over their obstacles.
Their time to strike came when Dark released a Beware the Grue! game.
It was truly a game to Beware, as the download was one gigabyte, it had
500 different creatures attacking you, and all you had to defend yourself
with, was a rusty pen knife and a beer can opener.

And to discourage all but the most faithful of game players, the game was
 voiced entirely by Microsoft Sam.

Hi all,

I would prefer using standard mode. When I die, I may want to come back,

Standard all the way for me. It's too much of a bother to start from
the beginning of a level in arcade after losing a life - I'd rather
just die for good. I think lives are oudated anyway.

On 5/1/09, Jeremy Hartley jeremyhart...@comcast.net wrote:
I mainly use arcade mode when I am trying to figure out how to play Mota.
But recently, I have just been playing first person mode, now that I have
a
better handle on how the game is layed out.

For me, having arcade mode is not a must, but I will admit it helps when
trying to figure out a game since you don't have to restart from the main
menu everytime you die. But really, it isn't a big deal.

 Subject: [Audyssey] MOTA Arcade Mode

 Hello Listers,
I have a real quick question for some of you Mysteries of the Ancients
fans. Over the passed few days/weeks I have been involved in performing a
major upgrade of Mysteries of the Ancients. As the work I am doing is
largely experimental I don't want to say too much about the work as yet.
Although, I think if it pans out it will be a big step forward with the
game, and possably will resolve several issues with the game.
That said, here is the deal. I've been porting MOTA over to a newer
version of the Genesis Engine, and so far so good. Thing is since Genesis
is primarily for First Person style games I never put an arcade mode in
the main Genesis Engine. It was strictly an addition to the modified
engine for Mysteries of the Ancients. Obviously I can add an arcade mode
to the Genesis Engine, make it a standard feature, but I'm not sure if
that is necessary. So I am going to ask this question. When playing
Mysteries of the Ancients do you prefer arcade mode or standard mode when
 playing?
 Thanks.

[Audyssey] Recording game demos

2009-05-21 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

How do people record game demos? I have a creative sound card and would like

I am told that I need a sound mixer. Is this correct? I did try playing with
the play-back microphone and the what you hear control in the recording
controls but did not have much success. I was trying to broadcast the sounds
over skype but that did not work as in the person at the other end could not

Subject: [Audyssey] Exciting MOTA News

Hello gamers,
Earlier this morning when I released the USA Games News I made mention
of a major bug in the cross platform Genesis Engine. Basically, that the
engine was hogging too much processor power and ram than it should.
Well, it so happens after several hours of looking over the code line by
line, inch by inch, etc I have found the source of the problem. It
happens to be a very massive, extremely huge, like totally unbelievable
memory leek of godlike proportions.Actually, forget leek and call it
more like a full blown
flood of memory loss.
In short, the basic problem was this. The soundClose function in my
Audio3D class failed to close sounds when it was called upon to do so.
So if i closed a gun sound to load a new one in its place, had the game
speak a message and dispose of it, the game just kept adding a new one
on the system heap without ever actually removing the old sounds and
speech messages from memory. Obviously, the end result of this was
a massive heap overflow. The engine kept piling sound files, speech
messages, etc onto the heap and of course sooner or later the game would
run out of available memory and die. After fixing said bug the game runs
fast, light, and smooth so far. Oh, and i put the high quality 44100 KHZ
sounds back in the game and no serious memory issues. It uses more
memory of course, but it isn't going to crash the game on a fairly
decent computer now. Just thought you might like to know about this
exciting news flash.
Smile.

Hi,

This is how I do it on this hp.

I'm asuming you've already went into properties by hitting alt p, went into
playback and made sure microphone was available and stario mix (or in your
case what you hear) is also available.
1. Open sounds and audio devices in the control pannel.
2. COntrol tab twice to the audio tab.
3. Tab once to playback volume, hit space.
4. Shift tab until you hear microphone volume, crank it up to 100, this is
how people are going to hear you while you demmo said game.
5. Tab, there should be a mute checkbox. Hit space on it to uncheck it.
6. You should hear yourself talking into the microphone if this is
successful.
7. Tab to the ok button and hit enter.
8. Tab to the recording volume button and hit space bar.
9. You'll see microphone volume, then a select checkbox which will be
checked.
10. Tab to the what you hear (or in some cases stario mix, wave out, etc)
and crank volume up to 100. Tab to the select checkbox, hit space on this.
Tab to the ok button and hit enter.
11. Your ready to rock. Test this out in sound recorder by going to
accessories, then entertainment. Once in the program, hit control r to
record, do some stuff, talk a bit, then go back and hit control s, then
control p to play it back.
12. That's it, hopefully it works. If not, contact my privately, I'll do my
best to help.

Subject: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

Hi everyone,
Over the last few months I have really been getting into interactive
fiction games, and really enjoy the old text adventures. As a result
that has me thinking of some possible game projects after Mysteries of
the Ancients and Raceway are released.
One idea I have been thinking of is producing a handful of USA Games
text adventures for Mac, Windows, and Linux that is similar to classic
if titles. With web based games like Sryth around I have discovered the
classic DND text adventure style game still can be quite addictive given
enough adventures and puzzles in it. What do you all think of this idea?
Cheers!

Check out the demo of TDV which is short for Three D Velocity. It is a cross

Hi,
I know there has been some fairly extensive discussion on the topic of
access to Microsoft's Flight Simulator 2002. That has a lot of detail--more

than you probably want. It is not combat-oriented, nor is it perfectly
accessible. Nevertheless I've played it off and on and I'm sure some folks

Hope this helps,

Hi,
Unfortunately at the moment no. We are having a lot of troubles
getting our web site back up and running. I'll spare you the technical
details, but we have not yet been able to figure out exactly why my
domain registrar can't find the new web server.
However, if you would like I can upload the set up file on a file
sharing web site like send space, but you will not be able to get the
necessary Windows updates to run it until my web site is back up.
Smile.

Hi,
Well, with my games you need to try to have an up to date copy of the
Microsoft .NET Framework and a fairly new copy of Managed DirectX. In
STFC's case you need .NET Framework 3.0 or better and Managed DirectX
August 2007 or later. I know for certain Managed DirectX doesn't come
with Windows Update, at not the latest versions, and so even though it
might say you are up to date sometimes it is wrong.
