Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS since version 7 doesn't read pages with frames
There must be something going on within that webpage other than frames to make it inaccessible. I have written WebPages that have had both standard and in line frames that are 100% accessible. Thos pages have worked on every version of JAWS I have had from 4.7 to 11. There are some experts that say using frames is a bad design choice. I agree that frames were and still are greatly abused, especially to steal content. Used sparingly and wisely, I see nothing inherently wrong with frames. According to JAWS11 which I'm using with Internet Explorer 8, there are two frames. It appears to read both of them, and the second frame appears to contain the links to content on the site; and the links to there seem to work also. (Many of the links have the same or similar names or labels. I don't know if this is an authorial matter.) There are 159 links, and they are all 'spoken'. I can't recall another particular multi-frame page at the moment; but can recall that JAWS11 (and 10, and versions prior, in my experience) do go on to speak other frames when they are encountered in a page. - Original Message - From: Sérgio Neves sergioneve...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, July 29, 2010 9:05 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS since version 7 doesn't read pages with frames Hi, JAWS for windows has problems reading pages with frames, since version 7 to at least version 10. When I attempt to access www.groups.yahoo.com using Firefox 3.6.8 with JAWS 9, Jaws announces the number of headings, links etc. as the page is loading, but once the page has completely loaded, all the objects on it seem to vanish and the only thing JAWS recognizes is the title; all the headings, links buttons and edit fields are gone. Then when I attempt to return to my Google home page, it, too, is devoid of any headings, links or edit fields. The only way to restore my home page to normal is to close Firefox and restart it. But when I try to access the Yahoo page again, the same thing happens: the page loads but all of its objects seem to disappear. I do not encounter this problem with IE 8, nor with any other web sites. This problem seems to be unique to Yahoo.com. Does anyone have a clue why this page won't load properly with Firefox? Re: [JAWS-Users] netflix online streaming accessibility and jfw?
I could not figure out a way to use any of the control buttons in Internet Explorer. This is because it uses Silverlight, which is not very accessible. I called Netflix a while back and they verified this and said they were working on this. They also said if you closed the browser to stop the movie before it was over, it would remember your place if you started it up again. For a blind person, the only way to get back to the beginning would be to continue to the end of the movie and start again! I have not tried this yetn but I recently heard that Netflix can now ve streamed to Media Center as well as Internet Explorer. Re: [JAWS-Users] Does anyone know of a shareware program to Backupaexternal drive?
I can vouch that Karen's Replicator works equally well in Vista and Windows 7. I have used it for years to make a copy of all my data folders to another computer in the house. When I was writing JAWS scripts, I would also make a copy of the JAWS user folder and place it in my Documents folder. That saved me several times. I also started using tags so it can automatically keep an archive of my Finance folder, so that I can go back to a particular month and year and get a copy of my files as they were on the end of that month. Additionally, my daughter used to use the Open Source gimp editor and a few times lost whole projects due to strange crashes. I set up Karen's Replicator to backup and archive her drawing folder so it would make a copy every 15 minutes and allow you to go back in the archives to a particular day and hour in the last month. Surprisingly, the software never crashed after that, preventing her from turning in her Art assignments! I guess I need to set up a similar backup for her on her new Mac Pro at College. It is a very easy, yet powerful tool that quietly works in the background and never impacts performance. If you are running XP or Vista, there should be a Internet Explorer 8 in the Add/Remove Control Panel in XP or the Program and Features Control Panel in Vista. Re: [JAWS-Users] Real Speak voices question
Moving to 64 bit does not necessarily increase the performance of the computer over 32 bit. Even on tasks where manipulating large chunks of data like video editing and transcoding will only be faster if the software is designed to take advantage of the 64 bit architecture and multiple cores / hyper threading. Frankly, multiple cores and hyper threading, which is used in the new I5 or I7 processors, currently provide a bigger performance boost. Keep in mind, that most applications and people work with characters, which do not require 64 bits of information. A 64 bit Operating System is absolutely necessary to use more than 4 GB of RAM memory. This is the prime reason to go to 64 bit Windows 7 right now. I am currently not using a 64 bit edition of Windows 7, so I can not yet speak from experience. Generally, you are right about being able to run most 32 bit applications on a 64 bit edition of Windows 7. I understand there are still some applications that have compatibility issues. Mostly these are older applications. I heard that for some bizarre reason, the Adobe Flash Player plug-inn for Internet Explorer is not available that runs in the 64 bit edition of Internet Explorer, so you must use the 32 bit edition of Internet Explorer to view pages with Flash! It seems that on a 64 bit edition of Windows 7, there are 2 different editions of Internet Explorer. I do not understand how the typical user is supposed to know which to use with which sites. Someone let me know if this is no longer the case. It would be shocking if Adobe could not deliver a 64 bit version ofFlash by now! One big exception to the highway analogy is any type of software or hardware drivers that are required to communicate with the hardware. Even though Microsoft and Intel heavily push for switching to 64 bit systems, not all hardware manufacturer's are as excited and have not provided the necessary drivers. I imagine the Real Speak voices or at least their interface to SAPI5 would need to have a 64 bit specific version. I guess looking back to the highway analogy it is more like driving an extra wide tractor trailer down a 4 lane busy road with commercial entrances to McDonalds... directly feeding onto the road. To get to higher speeds it would take major work and build service roads / ramps to bring it up to Interstate standards. Microsoft is attempting to improve their architecture, but without dropping support for legacy (older software), this is almost impossible. So my question is, when I ran the installer for the real speak voices, it said they'd not run on a 64 bit OS. So, having said that, this leads me to actually two questions. The first question which probably is the obvious is: is there a way to get around this, so that I can install the sapi version, and if not, can I get a 64 bit version from fs of the old sapi formatted installer. My second question is, maybe I'm completely all wet here, but I was under the impression that anything 32 bit architect would run on a 64 bit OS. Now, granted, I know for a fact! you can't run a 64 bit OS on a 32 bit only capable motherboard, nor, can you run x64 programs on a 32 bit OS. That's obvious. But I thought the annalogy worked like this: Say you have a 4 lane highway. OK, you may wind up only driving down 2! of those lanes, but, the point is, you can! do it. You're not taking over the whole highway, but, you're still able to drive down it. I hear 64 bit worked much the same way. You can! run 64 bit apps, or! 32 bit apps on 64 bit architect, but, on

Just a few comments to consider. I used to tfavor AMD for a long time as well. They used to provide more bang for the buck! Unfortunately, they have fallen far behind Intel in processor development and currently are not even competitive in price or performance. It may eeven be hard to find an AMD sysyem right now. I hope they catch up soon and provide competition again. If you are looking for performance, stay away from NetBooks, which are attractively inexpensive, but have limited performance. I think most users would prefer Windows 7 Home Premium. Starter has arbitrary limitations to make it slightly cheaper and Professional and above editions would require a Pro version of JAWS. Unless you know that you need one of the few additional features of Professional or Ultimate, stick with Home Premium. If you are not planning on using more than 4 GB of RAM, there is no technical reason to get a 64 bit edition of Windows 7. All hardware available today, except NetBooks, will be 64 bit capable. Re: [JAWS-Users] Having real problems with jaws 11, latest update, and windows live mail. it won't read messages sometimes.
This usually does fix the problem for me. Yes, I do sometimes get this happening with JAWS 11. I try a few other things first. My first attempt is to press Control + Home to get to the top of the message, then Insert + Escape to refresh the page, Then once again Control + Home to make sure it is at the top of the message, finally Insert + DownArrow to perform a SayAll. This works about 80% of the time for me. If that fails, pressing Tab once will place the focus in one of the header fields. Then I keep pressing Tab until I get to the message body. Then I can again use the Insert + Escape, Control + Home, Insert + DownArrow to start reading again. Even more annoying and non-productive is that occasionally I get into a situation where when attempting to reply to a message, it acts like it is working correctly and entering the typed text into the message body. However, no characters are placed in the message body! I have no idea how to get around this! Even restarting JAWS does not fix this issue. I have had to reboot or use NVDA! All of these problems go away for me if I delete all of the scripts in my user directory! Even placing the deprecated AnyTime Deluxe scripts that used to be part of earlier versions of JAWS will make these majorly annoying issues happen for me. JAWS 10 works well for me and no longer shows any issues. Freedom Scientific thinks all of the issues are that my Windows user profile is corrupted, so I need to delete and recreate my account or reinstall Windows. I do not have the time or patience to attempt this at this time just to use JAWS 11. I recently installed Thunderbird and am currently getting adjusted to it. I have not yet figured out how to import all of my saved Windows Live Mail messages into Thunderbird. Re: [JAWS-Users] how to set jaws speed for various applications
Not that I know of. It is possible to set as many different Voice Profiles as you want and then switch between them on the fly. To change Voice Profiles just press the JAWS key (Insert on Desktop, CapsLock on laptop) + Alt + S, then select from the list. If you create a special profile for a certain website, you could manually switch after going to that site. Re: [JAWS-Users] Direct Tv website and selecting program on grid.
Are you sure that pressing Space or Enter on the Show title does nothing? In my experience with the site, I have found that the show details and the recording option appear after all of the shows displayed for that channel. I also find that when activating these 'links' that the ffocus will bounce around, usually slightly higher on the page. After reviewing the show details, there will be 'link' to record. Again activating will change focus. The recording options, DVR choice (if more than one), and priority will be below the details. I have avoided using the main DirecTV TV guide pages ever since they removed the capability to customize the channel line up. Browsing through thousands of channels that I am not interested in is not my idea of efficient! I prefer to use a separate on line TV Guide, TitanTV.com. It is very customizable! It uses a true HTML tavle for the grid and allows viewing 6 hours at a time. To schedule recordings, I use the DirecTV mobile website, m.directv.com. It is very simple and uncluttered. Even though it is designed for mobile phones, it works very well on a PC as well. I have two R22 DVRs in our house. I have written a Word document describing the remote and it's functions. I have also written JAWS scripts to aid in the viewing the TV Guide and the recording processes. Basically, they make moving around the grid easier and will launch the mobile DVR Scheduler website, log in, and search for the show you were looking at in the grid with a single key combination. For more information and to download the Word document or scripts, go to: http://mysite.verizon.net/marangs/DirecTV.html There are some scripts for the DirecTV2PC application also in this package. These are not very useful at this time. The DirecTV2PC application is still in beta, but does not work very well for blind users. The application runs on a PC in your home and allows you to view the list of recorded shows and watch on your PC. Unfortunately, the My Playlist is designed to look and feel just like the on screen version on your TV. It is just as inaccessible! The original beta software allowed watching the show/movie. Again, CyberLink, who wrote this software for DirecTV, dealt a blow to the blind and visually impaired community. Later versions of the software improved security from pirates stealing movies. Even if JAWS is installed on your computer, the software blocks you from watching. It thinks there are no reasons anybody would have a shadow display driver unless you are attempting to steal the movie! The DirecTV2PC software is slightly useful for me, since I still have some vision in my right eye. JAWS can not read the list of recorded shows, but magnification still can help and the resolution is much better than a SD TV. If I put my nose against my computer screen, I can barely make out the shows in the list. I then know how many times to press the down arrowon the remote, so I can open folders and start shows with the 'Select' button. I hope to someday improve the accessibility of this DVR even more! Re: [JAWS-Users] HTML and inserted information
Sorry for the misunderstanding. This sounds like a serious accessibility issue and I would notify the bank immediately. Just grabbing at straws or sugar cane here, have you attempted to perform a Find for the Payee with Control + F? Probably will not work, but it is worth a try. Another longshot thought. Could the bank have made the payees name a graphic? They might have done this as a security measure or simply to make it more snazy. If so, perhaps the graphic could be labeled with JAWS or Webvisum. Webvisum could also be helpful since you can send the graphic to their serber and have them perform OCR on it so it could be identified. If the payee names are graphics, the bank should definitely update their pages to label those graphics with Alt tags. Make sure that JAWS is set to announce all graphics so that you will know if something is there. First of all, if you press CTRL+9 you will move the focus directly to the web page. This will often work faster than using f6 or tabbing. You can set Internet Explorer to open in full screen mode. Choose full screen under the view menu and then close the browser. When you open the browser again, it will be running in full screen mode. However, I found that when using a blank starting page the focus still went to the address bar. When using a web page that isn't blank in full screen mode the focus went to the body of the page as you would expect. In full screen mode you can still access menus and use hotkeys. You can also use F11 to turn on full screen mode. You can run the browser in Kiosk mode. In Kiosk mode most hotkeys will work but you cannot access a menu bar. However, when a blank page is your starting page, it will load as expected and not go directly to the address bar. Use the run dialog box to use the Kiosk mode. Use Windows key+R to bring up the run dialog box. Type in IExplore -K without the quotes. If you press enter you will be taken to your start page. If the page is blank there will be nothing to access. Again, you can use hotkeys to open pages and perform other actions but you won't be able to use the menu bar. There is a context menu with limited choices on it when in Kiosk mode. In the run dialog box you can also follow the IExplore -K command with a space and a specific address to open. You might find that just pressing CTRL+f9 will work for what you are wanting to do. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] epson sx650 all in one printer with jaws 11
I have an Epson Artisan 810 All-In-One Wireless Network printerr. I absolutely love it. Typically software for HP printers is more accessible and they officially support Linux drivers. However, I got tired of HP printers getting chincy. A prime example is the last HP OfficeJet printer I owned had a paper feed so cheap, even my sighted wife was unable to fax a single page! The paper feed on my Artisan is robust and has not failed yet. The ADF works great for scanning and faxing. It also has a full flatbed scanner. The ink is really easy to change. Hardware wise, this printer can not be beat! The software is a mixed bag. I still have not figured out the Epson Scan software. The fax software is straight forward and accessible. I generally avoid their software beyond the basic drivers. Using this printer with Windows for those who are completely blind is probably not recommended. I have just enough vision to see the icon size soft buttons on the screen. The main screen has 6 buttons and I know that Scan is the bottom middle button. This scanner can scan to a memory card plugged into the scanner. I just scan to the memory card and all of the computers in our house can access the card over the network. I use my scanner frequently from Vinux. A separate division of Epson in Japan provide Linux drivers that work great. Ubuntu has a bunch of great free, utilities to work with scanned images, and there is more to come. Re: [JAWS-Users] File path, file info and Classic theme in windows7 with JAWS11
I will attempt to answer your questions in order. 1. Press F4 to take you to an address bar that is not in the Tab order. I am not sure it is even normally visible. This was also available in XP. I think the text is selected by default, so pressing Control + C as soon as you move to this field will copy the full folder address to the clipboard. If you want to copy the full pathname of a file, there is another method. Hold down the Shift key while pressing the Applications key. This brings up the right click context menu with a few additional items. One of those additional items will be Copy path. 2. Windows 7 and JAWS support a new way of looking at file information in Windows Explorer. If you have the Details view enabled (Alt + V, followed by D), the information is now displayed in a table. By arrowing left and right you can move to read the different columns. This has been previously available on the Mac and Linux. 3. I am not really too familiar with the Windows Clasic theme because I do not use it. The two differences I know of is that Classic does not use Aero and the Desktop is not in the Alt + Tab order. Aero is a new, fancy window special effects theme that makes Windows 7 look cool. JAWS will disable Aero anyway. In the Classic theme, the Desktop should not appear when pressing Alt + Tab through the open applications. How do I copy the full path in Windows7 explorer? those split buttons on top upon which successively hitting the right arrow shows u the path doesn't allow me to copy the full path at all I've set the folder view to details, and only have the navigation pane checked under the 'layout' option under the 'organize' split button inside windows explorer. 2. How do I easily see the file date and size with Jaws11 inside Windows7 explorer? Again in XP I would just revert to the JAWS cursor, move it over the file of interest and JAWS would read out this info. Not so in Windows7 explorer. Tabbing when resting upon a file name just seems to take me to the diff column headings (name, date etc.) and I believe it only allows u this way to sort the folder by name or date or so on. Also pl note I don't want to have to hit the applications key on the kBD then go to the general tab and find the info there. that seems too long compared to the above described quicker way that works in XP. so is there a quicker way in Windows7 explorer? 3. finally, someone earlier on this list recommended changing the windows7 theme to Windows classic which I have done. However I'm curious as to what should I now expect to find different as a JAWS user? I haven't really found any difference so far switching the theme to classic. thx much! Re: [JAWS-Users] Question About Losing Focus
I have been having a particular case of losing focus ever since the last JAWS 11 update. The odd thing is that it is happening in JAWS 10! I primarily still use JAWS 10 because there are somehow unrelated user scripts like the BX Toolbox that have strange side effects on JAWS 11 and Windows Live Mail. My new focus issue in JAWS 10 is sometimes when I launch a new browser window or if I use Tab browsing. It happens 100% of the time if I use Control + Enter on a link to open a new Tab in a background window. The focus gets lost. The arrow and navigation keys no longer work. Presumidelly, It is at the bottom of the page because pressing Tab takes me to the address bar! Pressing Shift + Tab takes me back to the link I was at before the incidentt. Kind of a Twighlight episode. Re: [JAWS-Users] what is the email address for reportingproblems/issues to Freedom Sciantific?
I still encounter that exact problem with Windows Live Mail and JAWS 11. The latest JAWS 11 update fixed a lot of other odd issues with this app. I also wish that when reading messages in a separate window, that pressing the Delete key would delete the message and start reading the next message. This works in JAWS 10, but does not work for me with JAWS 11. I can delete these messages by pressing Control + D. If I wipe out my personal settings and all user scripts, I think it works a little better. I have notified Freedom Scientific. They recognize the Windows Live Mail scripts need more work, mostly due to Microsoft developing code that does not properly use their own MSSA standard. They always promise they will be better in JAWS 12. Because of these issues, I am still mostly using JAWS 10. I have more productive things to do with my time than track down which scripts are screwing up unrelated scripts and why. Re: [JAWS-Users] Kill JAWS
There has been a JAWS hotkey to unload JAWS when things go wrong since version 8. It is JAWSKey (Insert for desktop keyboard layouts, CapsLock for laptop) + Windows + F4. There will be no confirmation dialog. Sometimes it produces a system beep on my computer. This also dumps the memory to a file that FS support may ask you to email to them. From the JAWS 8 What's New: If a total loss of speech occurs, it is difficult to recover JAWS without rebooting the computer. However, a reboot provides no diagnostic information to assist Freedom Scientific in researching the underlying problem. INSERT+WINDOWS Key+F4 is a new JAWS keystroke for emergency recovery. The new keystroke closes JAWS, terminates all related processes, and creates a memory dump file. The diagnostic information can be used to assist Technical Support. (Note: The keystroke will not work at the Windows Log In screen.) After issuing this command, you can restart JAWS to regain speech. The memory dump file is saved to the Settings folder. To locate the file, do the following: Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu. Choose Programs. Choose JAWS 8.0, Explore JAWS, and then Explore My Settings. This opens the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\8.0\Settings\ENU. Press the BACKSPACE key to navigate to the Settings folder. Select the JAWSMemDmp folder and press ENTER. The files in this folder are identified by the JAWS version and build number. The normal command, i. e. INSERT-F4 does not work in this situation. Now, Window Eyes has a Kill script that allows you to use a hotkey that will unload Window Eyes from memory, and then you can use your normal hotkey, usually CONTROL-ALT-W, to start WE again. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Flash player
Currently, most buttons within a Flash Player can only be labeled by the Developer! YouTube, just after the announcement of Adobe's CS4 last year, which included more accessibility features in Flash Professional, added labels for standard buttons like play, pause and full screen. Sometime over the last year this seemed to go away. Probably a developer's oversight. JAWS can not label anything within the Flash movie object. As far as I have been able to determine, JAWS Scripts can not help label these buttons either. Adobe has just released, or about to release CS5, which now enhances the accessibility features and more importantly, make accessibility the default! This means that any developer creating a Flash Player object with the Adobe Flash Professional in Creative Suite 5 (CS5), will automatically have the standard 'widgets', recognized as buttons by JAWS will be labeled. Additional developer customized 'widgets' must have additional accessibility info filled out in the accessibility panel. Hopefully, this evolutionary enhancements will get implemented by web developers. The website developers must add this information or at least upgrade to the latest tools to improve the accessibility of their site. Send emails to the webmaster / developer of these sites to encourage them to update to the latest tools and to use the accessibility features of these tools to improve their site. HTML does show promise since it has accessibility designed into the standard. There are still many details up in the air, such as which video codec to implement. These issues are around copyright and patents. The favorite is H264, which works great and implemented many places like YouTube, is currently only free for non commercial use and this free trial will end around 2014. Some organizations, like Mozilla will not implement H264 for this reason in Firefox. They are pushing an little known open source video codec. Microsoft supports HTML5 using H264. They are implementing these standards into Internet Explorer 9. There are some very early betas of IE9 available, but I doubt they would work well with any screen readers. Apple, of course, has started a war with Adobe over Flash. Steve has personally bashed Flash and swears never to allow it on iPhones, iPods or iPads! He is pushing HTML5, even though it is not ready yet. That will certainly speed up implementation. Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Access Web Site Log In Page
One additional note. The first My Account mouse over link did not bring up the login edit fields for me. I found a second My Account link just before the Flash Movie object. Hitting Enter on this link enables the login edit fields required to login. If you do not find the second link just before the Flash object, it may need you to hit Enter on the first My Account link to show the second link. If you get to the login edit boxes, I would set a Favorite with Control + D, to avoid this every time. Another possible option is AudioBookCutter. I have downloaded it but have not tried it yet. Mo. Darrin Porter wrote: Mo, This could easily and quickly be done with GoldWave. Goldwave will either automatically split the file into segments whose lengths you specify (regardless of what's happening at the split point) or you can manually go in and drop que points where you want the file split. This is pretty quick and easy since you can jump to any part of the file quickly. For example, if you wanted the file split up into roughly thirty minute segments, you could simply jumt to, say, 29 minutes and thirty seconds and start listening, dropping your que point during a pause or quiet part of the file. Then repeate at 59:30, 1:29:30, etc. I did this for a two and a half hour lecture series I recorded and managed to get the entire lecture split into approximately 5 minute segments in somewhat less than an hour. Another nice feature of GoldWave is that you can name your que points and tell the program to split the file at the que points and use the que point names as the split file names. Re: [JAWS-Users] QUICK KEYS
Sorry, I asked as part of a troubleshooting process of the problem, not as a solution. You need to find the root of the issue, such as the JAWS Navigation keys not working or a hardware or software problem with your keyboard. Trying a USB keyboard if available, might help isolate the problem. Again, this is a troubleshooting step, not a solution. By the way, in Word, the D and N keys should move you through footnotes and comments in your document. Re: [JAWS-Users] Updates, Bios
Unless there is a problem with the current BIOS or there is a new feature you strongly want., there is no need to update. If you do hold off updating right now, familiarize yourself with what the update provides in case you encounter problems in the future. It may be an issue with external hardware which you currently do not own. Updating the BIOS or any firmware is very similar from the user's viewpoint from a standard install and usually just as easy. However, BIOS and firmware updates are always more risky. There is a chance the computer or device can become a paperweight if it fails or the power goes out at the wrong time! It is normally safe. Do not update while doing something else at the same time, close all other windows, and not during a thunderstorm. Yes, you diagnosed that right. If you must use JAWS within the VM, deleting the JAWS mirror display driver will allow JAWS to run without crashing. Good point. Perhaps the term 'resources' was premature. I have not even looked at the memory being used by Security Essentials. I was thinking mostly about CPU usage and responsiveness. Re: [JAWS-Users] avast accessibility
If you want to stick to a free, no hassle antivirus/antimalware solution, I would recommend Microsoft's Security Essentials. It is completely accessible, uses little resources, and stays out of the way. The definition updates are handled by Windows Update for reliability and convenience. Since your habits and quickly performing Operating System and Browser security updates through Windows Update is actually more important than the antivirus scanner to reduce risk of infection, tieing definitions to Windows Update makes sense. There are a few solutions that possibly catch more nasties, but if your habits are risky and / or this keeps you up at night, you would probably be better off with a paid product. My guess is that the parrent document being announced is part of the technical information available in Developer Mode, which is now part of Internet Explorer 8. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws speaking: Heading Level 1 question
Try the following to turn off heading announcements. I realize your Word document is not an HTML webpage, but I believe JAWS treats headings and such the same, whether on a webpage, PDF document, or Word document. 1. Press Insert (CapsLock if using the laptop keyboard layout) + F2, then arrow down to Configuration Manager, and hit Enter. 2. Press Control + Shift + D, to open the Default file, so the change applies to all applications. 3. Press Alt + S, followed by H, to open the HTML Options dialog. 4. Press Control + Tab until you hear the Headings and Frames Tab. 5. You should be placed on the Heading Verbosity radio buttons. Arrow down to No headings and press Enter. 6. Press Control + S to save your settings and then Alt + F4 to close Configuration Manager. If you want to handle heading announcements in unique ways or to handle level 1 headings different from level 4 headings, check out the Sounds and Speech Manager within the Configuration Manager. I have a scheme that reads level 2 headings (RSS feed headlines) and Quotes in the Daniel voice, Karen for norermal text and Speak capitals and All Caps. I do not use this scheme all of the time, but I like the effect. Just upgraded to Jaws 11 today, and in every WORD file I open, every line (be it the first line in a paragraph or continuing text from a previous line) Jaws reads out: Heading Level 1. Needless to say, since I write screenplays, this is a problem. According to my wife, everything is still the same as it was pre-upgrade. Style in WORD is normal, and it's all plain text. And, it applies the Heading Level 1 to every line, be it the title, a single sentence, a copyright date, etc. If somebody can tell me how to stop this or what setting I need to change, basically anything before I blow my brains out (I'm on deadline, no less), much appreciated. I updated last night and have not seen any improvement! I am very disappointed! Especially since Freedom Scientific has been telling me for months that it will be fixed in the next update, without even taking down the specifics of my issues! Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel problems with Jaws
Perhaps the font size on the screen is too small for JAWS to read correctly. I would check the zoom level by pressing F6 until you get to the status bar. Then Tab until you get to the zoom button and press Enter. I would think a good mix of the actual font size and magnification level would allow JAWS to read the cells. Press Insert + F, to determine the font size used in a pparticular cell. Either f5 or control-g gives you the go to dialog box. Then enter what you want to select. For example if you want to select rows 1 through ten, you would type f5, then 1:10. You can select contiguous cells, joining them with colon as above, or non-contiguous cells, joining them with comma. I would have thought that unloading and reloading JAWS would straighten things out when you're trying to read, though. Excel is hard for JAWS, being so densely formatted, but usually unload/reload unscrambles it. Good luck! The key combination, Insert + Control + NumPad Enter, should activate whatever JavaScript code is attached to that element. Re: [JAWS-Users] Links with mouse over
I do not think JAWS attempts to understand what the mouse over JavaScript will do, or analyze the new additions to the page to determine what has been added. As previously stated, JAWS reports the line where the new content has been placed. The new content could be anything, like explanatory text, similar to a ToolTip. It could be an entire new submenu or. However, I can not imagine a case where that would not be a bad design. Yeah, I just looked that up in the JAWS help, which stated, Jump to a specific line with J, And return to the starting point before the jump with Shift+J. At least this helps you move to the new content and easily get back, if needed. Re: [JAWS-Users] DVD issue!
The problem you are faceing is the DRM copy protection. Microsoft has been over zealous in enforcing this DVD! They require that no other video drivers are installed on your computer that might be attempting to copy the video. Unforrtunately, they do not distinguish between these pirate programs and the Freedom Scientific Video Mirror driver. In effect, they are accusing all JAWS users of being pirates! This could get serious if the International treaty to prevent counterfeiting gets enacted. The current leaked proposal states that if anybody is reported to be performing acts of piracy 3 times, like illegal downloads, will be banned from the Internet for life! This is not a conviction from a court, just a letter from your ISP, or other accusation could be enough. Try using another media player, such as VLC Media Player or WinAmp. They should play the DVD just fine. I like VLC because it is easy to move directly to the main title, the movie, from the menus. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor
The JAWS cursor moves around the mouse pointer. You said that you already know that the NumPad - (minus) key puts you in JAWS cursor mode Insert + NumPad - (minus) moves the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor where the focus is currently placed, and NumPad + (plus) will return you to the normal PC cursor mode. Yes, the Insert + R keystroke sets the JAWS cursor restriction. In JAWS 10 these options are; Application (default), real, current, focus, frame, and unrestricted. These restrictions will not let the mouse leave the specified container, normally staying within the application's window. This prevents hearing unrelated information, like Desktop Icons, from being spoken while poking around. Unrestricted mode lets you move the mouse anywhere on the screen. There are many ways to move the mouse around at this point and have JAWS announce what is underneath. The PageUp key will move to the top of the window, the PageDown key to the bottom of the window, the Home key will move to the left side of the window, and the End key will move to the far right side of the window or container. You can simply use the arrow keys. Pressing Control with either the Left or Right Arrow keys will move to the next item in the container, such as the next piece of text or graphic. There are other combinations, such as holding down the Alt key while using the Arrow keys that moves the mouse in different increments. Someone else might want to specify further. I don't really use these keys. Typically, you will want to click on an item with the NumPad / (divide) key or right click using the NumPad * (multiply) key on the object under the mouse cursor. Another useful key is Alt + Delete, which announces cursor information. It will say the cursor mode which is active, the absolute X, Y position in pixels, the current restriction if not using the PC cursor, and many times the percentage of the way down in a scrolling window. The percentage is handy in browser windows as well. The best way to understand the PC cursor mode is to play around and explore. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 11 and windows seven
JAWS 11 does not work well for me either! I am using Windows Live Mail on Windows 7. To read and compose mail, I switch from JAWS 11 to JAWS 10. JAWS 10 has a few quirks with Windows Live Mail, but is useable. Freedom Scientific promised me about a month ago that a new update of JAWS 11 should fix all of these issues. I have not seen any updates yet. If this sounds too frustrating for you, you might want to consider using Thunderbird. Users have developed scripts to make it accessible. Re: [JAWS-Users] question on pre-loaded back up/syncsoftwareon Seagate FreeAgent Go 1 TB USB 2.0 PortableExternalHard Drive and jaws
Back to the original question, I tend to keep automatic backups simple. I use Karen's Replicator found on the jaws-users program page. It is completely accessible, efficient, and does not take up resources. The only way I can tell if it is currently copying files is to check the System Tray. It never slows down my computer. I backup all my data to another computer in my house every day. I also perform archives that keep separate copies of vital data, such as my Financial and Medical folders. Using tags as subfolder names for month and year, it keeps an archive copy every month. I also installed it on my daughter's computer not only to backup her data, but to make a local copy of her drawing folder where she works on her art projects. After she had a major breakdown the night before a major project was due because gimp destroyed her drawing! So now I made it automatic that a copy of that folder is made every 15 minutes using the hour as a tag for the subfolder. Now every drawing she works on has 24 copies and if she has a catastrophe, she can go back in time 24 hours to a time where her drawing was in tact. That's even better than the Omega 13! Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft office 2010 and jaws
I tried the Office 2010 Home and Small Business Click to run edition. I wanted to try Excel and Word. The Click to run edition is a Microsoft experiment in rolling out a virtualized version of Office. It does not get installed in the typical way! When you click on the icon, instead of installing, it downloads and runs the application quickly and continues to download the application while it is being used. With the exception of Outlook, it will not interfere with other versions of Office installed on the computer. I m intrigued by the technology, but was not impressed by it's operation! I prefer to have these types of applications permanently installed locally for performance reasons. I could understand this technology for large corporation deployment over local networks, which is where I think it was derived. For some reason, Microsoft feels like it needs to respond to working in the cloud like Google Apps. In addition to severe stability problems with the Click to run virtualization, I found accessibility issues as well! Excel was completely inaccessible with JAWS 11! JAWS could not even move through the grid or respond when editing a cell! It could not read any of the data. Perhaps Microsoft made major changes to the screen layout? In the case of Excel, waiting for JAWS 12 is absolutely necessary. I did not have the same issues with Word, but could rarely open a document without a fatal error because of the virtualization. Therefore, I did not have a chance to use it very much. Re: [JAWS-Users] Tax software
About three years ago we came close! That was why I stopped trying to make TaxAct work each year using old scripts. The program changes every year, but FS has never updated their original scripts. My wife hates computers and has no patience! Now we go to H R Block and the frustration is gone! I just have to forfeit a little of the refund! At least the household is peaceful! I ended up scanning in all of the documents this year anyway. I wonder if I could manage to get all of the needed data off the W2s to directly fill out the forms on the IRS site. The nice part about H R Block is they also fill out the PA state and local taxes. There is no way otherwise to fill out the local taxes electronically. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws not saying unread
Do the following steps to label the unread and attachment graphics in the message list, so they will be announced. The most annoying flaw in JAWS 10 for me was that the graphics for unread and attachment status were not defined in a JAWS .JGF file! I ended up labeling these graphics myself and it now works fine. 1. First make sure that within the Windows Live Mail application that it is configured to read labeled graphics. Without Configuration Manager set this way, the message status will never get read. You indicate this setting is already set to labeled. 2. Temporarily set the verbosity to read all graphics by pressing Insert + V, then press G until you hear Graphics. Press Space until it announces all, then hit Enter. . 3. Move to an unread message, then route the JAWS Cursor to the PC Cursor and switch to the JAWS Cursor by pressing Insert + NumPad minus (-) followed by the NumPad minus (-). 4. Move on top of the unnamed graphic to the left of the message by pressing Control + Left arrow. 5. Press Insert + G to label the graphic. Type in unread without the quotes, and hit Enter. 6. Press the NumPad plus (+) to make certain that the PC Cursor is enabled. 7. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws does not says unread message
You did not say which version of JAWS you were using. My guess is that you are using version 10 based on this problem. Freedom Scientific has done a miserable job of supporting any Windows 7 mail cclient other than Outlook! Considering that they have supported Outlook Express and Windows Mail in the past, it is unbelievable that they have little interest in supporting Microsoft's successor, Windows Live Mail. I have been told that another JAWS upddate will be coming out soon that improves the useability of Windows Live Mail. I hope they get it right this time! Many Windows 7 users have switched to Thunderbird 3 and wrote their own scripts in the community since Freedom Scientific refuses to listen to the needs of their users. To get to your problem. I had found that JAWS 11 will announce unread and attachment status in Windows Live Mail. However, it currently is very problematic to read or compose mail using JAWS 11. I have found that Windows Live Mail works reasonably well with JAWS 10! I know this makes no sense, but ask Freedom Scientific how that could happen. The most annoying flaw in JAWS 10 for me was that the graphics for unread and attachment status were not defined in a JAWS .JGF file! I ended up labeling these graphics myself and it now works fine.Try thee following steps to see if this helps. If Freedom Scientific does notget it right with the next upgrade, perhaps a migration to Thunderbird is in order. 1. First make sure that within the Windows Live Mail application that it is configured to read labeled graphics. Without Configuration Manager set this way, the message status will never get read. 2. Re: [JAWS-Users] Move to folder option seems too have disappeared.
The key combination I previously mentioned, should be done twice quickly to make the change permanent. If you do the Tether the JAWS Cursor to the PC Cursor key combination, Control + Insert + NumPad minus (-) only once, it will toggle the setting but will revert back to the saved setting again the next time JAWS is started. Re: [JAWS-Users] Viewing a web cam from an internet site
The video and sound work fine on my computer, but first someone needs to press the play button! I had my son activate the video since I could not find any indication of any such control on the whole page. Since you can play the video in Facebook, which probably uses Adobe's Flash, perhaps this page also uses Flash but the player embedded into the page was built in a way to make the control invisible. Another possibility is that this page uses Microsoft's Silverlight technology to display the video. I have not seen any Silverlight pages that have accessible controls. I do not think Microsoft has made it possible to make Silverlight accessible at this point. You might want to send a message to the site's webmaster to inform them that the site and webcam are not accessible. Meantime, if the video and sound work within Facebook, use that portal for now. Re: [JAWS-Users] Viewing a web cam from an internet site
There is Flash on this page. However, I am not quite sure if the streaming video from the webcam is delivered using Flash. I normally do not turn off Flash unless it causes a problem, like on paying bills on my bank's site. I then bring up the personaalized verbosity settings with Shift+Insert+V, to turn off Flash for that site only. So even with Flash turned on, JAWS does not recognize any controls on this page. Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 Save As Dialog not Reporting Folder
A typical example is downloading MP3 files from the Internet or from RSS feeds in IE 8. I have a Podcast folder in my Download folder where I want to place this file. When I proceed to save the file, commonly by RouteingJAWSToPC, simulating a RightMouse click, and selecting Save Target as At this point, I normally press Shift + Tab twice to get to the folder view where it should show a list of folders and files of the same type within the currently selected folder. Of course, the selected folder should be the folder saved to the last time a file was downloaded. JAWS will currently not announce anything in that control. If mmy last selected folder was the Download folder, it should announce Audible, which is currently the first folder in my Download folder. If my last selected folder was the Podcast folder, it should announce the first file, if there are any files. Like I said previously, pressing Shift + Tab a third time to the tree view, provides no help since JAWS only announces the hard drive name and not the currently selected folder. I have been using the tree anyway to navigate to the desired foldder even though it was probably already selected! I wanted to see if anyone else had these problems. I installed some software that screwed up some Windows Explorer settings that JAWS did not like. I reset all views and am attempting to restore them to my preferences. I have also had problems in Windows Explorer when entering an empty folder. JAWS does not announce 0 files (something to that effect) and seems to get lost! Re: [JAWS-Users] netflix
I might have overstated the streaming number. I noticed that Netflix does not seem to publisize these numbers. The most accurate, up to date number I could find was the November 2009 Press Release for streaming to the PS3, where they simply state thousands of titles. Not very precise. I was basing my comment on a tech podcast recently, where Leo LaPorte and Paul Thurrott were discussing Netflix. As I remember the conversation, the DVD titles are over 100,000 and the streaming titles are close to 18,000. I have no idea where these numbers come from since Netflix seems to avoid numbers. I signed up for it last night and love it very much. So much better than blockbuster online. I was wondering if anyone could answer this question. If I were to watch a television series online, how would I get to each episode. I know that it just starts playing from the beginning, but is there any way to stop where you left off? - Original Message - From: Kliph phantom3...@yahoo.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, December 28, 2009 1:44 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Netflix Depends on what you want. I pay 15 bucks a month, but I get unlimited online playing of movies, unlimited streams to my blu-ray player or xbox360, and unlimited movies mailed to me 2 at a time. There are plans as low as 5 dollars a month, but I think you only get 1 movie at a time, and there is no online or streaming with that one. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Kimsan Song Sent: Monday, December 28, 2009 1:28 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Netflix How much is it to do this netflicks thing? Although watching movies directly to my blu-ray player isn't blind friendly, watching them online is. All you do is click play and it starts right up for you. And yes, they add more TV and movies each week. And if you search for something, if it's not streamable, or playable online, it will give you a date when it will be. Re: [JAWS-Users] netflix
I just got a Netflix account for my family for Christmas. I also bought my oldest daughter a Roku box to stream Netflix movies directly to her TV. The Netflix site seems fairly easy to navigate, find and play movies on your PC. Silverlight seems very stable and I have never noticed any hesitation or buffering stalls yet. I have no idea if there is any way to control the movie, such as pause, rewind or fast forward. There are no controls visible to JAWS. Perhaps there are hotkeys available. I also wish there were hotkeys to adjust the volume of the movie. Re: [JAWS-Users] receits
The delivery receipt sends you a message when the message enters their Inbox, the read receipt sends you a message when the message is opened and read. I find the read receipt more useful. Re: [JAWS-Users] Gold Wave Scripts
There is a known problem installing scripts on a 64 bit system from a self installing JAWS Script Exchange (JSX) package. Until a compatible version of JSX is available and the packages are rebuilt, this will not work. In the mean time, I think the only work-around is to install the scripts on your 64 bit system manually! I tried two other self extracting things that would not extract to the right places, either. Also I paid for my Goldwave key over a year ago. Is it supposed to work for newer versions of Goldwave or just the one that was current at the time? Which version works best with Jaws 11? The reason I ask is listening to some of Rick Harmon's Gold Wave POD casts I hear some information I do not hear when I use Gold Wave. I also don't seem to have some of the shortcut keys he describes. Is it possible the scripts need to be re compiled? If so, I need a refresher on how to do that. I also noticed in my Jaws settings folder there are Gold Wave 4 script files as well. I am using the latest version of Gold Wave. Do these need to be kept? thanks Al For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] Tv guide freeware
I use the TitanTV.com website. It works very well with JAWS! It can display a 6 hour grid of your favorite channels in a true HTML table. This makes it very easy to move through the channels and to the next or previous show. Additionally, the channel name or time is announced as you move through the grid. Just hold down the Alt + Control as you arrow around in the table. You will need / want to create a free account so that you can set your provider, preferences and favorite channels in one or more channel lineups. There are many preferences to adjust display and text sizes if you have any vision. I have a DirecTV R22 DVR, which can be programmed to record shows or download Video On Demand shows from their website. I prefer the TitanTV.com TV listings. I have written JAWS scripts to make moving around in the grid even easier. I get to the grid by pressing T, to move to the table. I then press Control + Shift + T, to enable my Table Navigation Mode, which holds down the Alt and Control keys while you are in a table. Press the combination again to exit this mode. The scripts also perform a lookup of a show that you want to record on the DirecTV DVR Scheduler mobile website if you press Control + Shift + R on that show in the grid. Of course, this only works if you have a DirecTV DVR. There are also handy hotkeys to open the current page in Firefox (Control + Shift + F), which is useful if you encounter a CAPTCHA that you want to solve with Webvisum, and a hotkey to open the current page in Internet Explorer (Control + Shift + E). The scripts work for Internet Explorer and Firefox. They are available at: http://mysite.verizon.net/marangs/DirecTV.html Note that this package also has scripts for the DIRECTV2PC application and a set of scripts to adjust the application's volume. The volume scripts currently only adjust the JAWS voice volume due to a technical roadblock. If you install these scripts, you may want to respond No, when asked if you want to merge AppVolumeDefault scripts with default scripts.
