Hi Alan, When that happens to me, I just save a copy on my computer, instead of viewing the document from the temp directory it's being held in. I believe this has to do with the Smart Screen feature, but don't quote me on that. In any case, if you do a "save as" from the file menu, then save it in your documents or downloads directory, it will negate the Smart Screen protection, and you should be able to read the document just fine. Re: [JAWS-Users] Addressing a few Messages in: leasing a router versus purchasing one
Hi Folks, I'm addressing a few messages here, as it would seem that some people don't know a few things about the provision of internet services through a provider. First and foremost, someone stated that they had countless trouble with the rented modem, and the company never came over to fix the problem since they were able to fix the issue over the phone from their offices. Most gateway problems, and we *are* talking about gateways here, not routers, can usually be fixed by unplugging the gateway from the power supply, in other words, unplugging the power cord, either from the electrical outlet, or the rear of the gateway, waiting for a count of twenty to thirty seconds, then plugging the gateway back into the power. This resets the gateway, and gives it the ability to pick up the IP address, and bada-bing, bada-boom, you're connected again. It's the same thing when you lose your wireless signal, you simply do the routine above, and voila, your wi-fi is back from limbo. This may be a problem with the gateway hardware, or it may be a setting within the gateway's firmware that needs tweaking. Since I am no mastermind with gateways or networks, I think it's a safer bet to just unplug the darn thing rather than sit there patiently looking for a setting that, at the end of the day, has a simple fix. Now, if it keeps happening several times a day, or even a week, then it would be time to reset it, in which case, just like extracting an unextractable CD/DVD from the CD/DVD drive with a paper clip, you can use that same paper clip to press the reset button on the gateway, thus resetting the gateway back to it's factory defaults. At that point, you'll have to configure it again, so if you weren't the person who first configured the gateway the first day it was installed in your home, or you don't feel comfortable messing with your gateway's settings, then you may want to call your ISP's tech support to get them to walk you through setting it up. This usually involves accessing the gateway through it's internet browser page with a username and password, if you can find the master username and password, you'll be surprised of some of the functions you can unlock that your ISP keeps from you. For example, In Canada, Rogers gateways have the standard customer usernames and passwords, and a master username and password that gives Rogers' tech staff unfettered access to your gateway, so even if you change the gateway access credentials, you're only changing an authorized user's credentials, and not the master credentials, and so they'll be able to, as I said at the beginning of the message, access your router to reset it, or reset the settings so that what ever problem you had with the gateway disappears. Now, please keep in mind that you are renting a gateway, not a router. That's not to say that the gateway does not perform the functions of a router, but for ease of explanation, I call them gateways. You can quickly tell the difference between the two because a gateway will have the main line, whether it be your telephone line, as is the case with A T & T, or cable Line, as is the case with Comcast, directly plugged into it. A router does not. It only has a connecting cable from your modem, which has the telephone or cable line directly plugged into it, plugged into the router. A gateway does the job of both the modem and the router, and must be registered with the Internet Service provider in order to access the internet on their network. This usually involves calling them with a serial number, or some other bunch of numbers on the back or bottom of the gateway, an them plugging the numbers into their system and registering your gateway's access. Typically, gateways go for $75 for a refurbished/clearance model, to $350, depending on the quality and features you desire of the unit. Now, if you don't have the money to afford these babies, then you have to go with the split option of purchasing a router, ranging in price from $25 to $99+, again, depending on the features the specific model has, and connecting it to your modem, which you will be renting from your service provider. Regardless of which method you use to access the internet, whether it's a gateway, or a router plugged into a modem, you'll have to decide which is best for you, and which option you can afford. the difference between purchasing a gateway and renting one is the warranty. In most cases, unless you purchase extended warranties with the unit, you'll get a one year manufacturer's warranty, as opposed to a lifetime warranty which you get when renting the gateway from your ISP. Again, this boils down to the type and price of the gateway you decide to purchase. Just like computers, gateways require maintenance, and/or break down. if you purchased the gateway outright and it's past it's warranty period, you're S.O.L. and you're going to have to shell out another wad of money for a new

Then, we decided to bundle our phone service with internet & TV. The cable company then installed their router and all things functioned through the router. At that time the router was simply part of the equipment and there was no additional cost for having it. Quite some time back, they started charging a monthly leasing fee. At first it was only $3. Over time it went to $5, then $8 and now it is going to $10 per month. My question is I know there are very good routers out there. What I'm interested in hearing from folks that own one is when you are having any type connectivity issues, does your cable provider simply blame your purchased router and state the problem is with that or do they actually come to the house and inspect the cables etc. Over the years I have had trouble with their router and the cable lines/connections. I know if one chooses to purchase their own router, the cable company will not touch it. So, what I'm fearful of is if I have trouble, they are automatically going to say it is the purchased router and there is nothing they can do to correct the issue. Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook Express, options, finding advanced page, removing message from server
Hi Neil, That's because you're looking in the application settings, and not the account settings. When you press alt+T for the tools menu, assuming you're using the original Outlook Express, press the letter A for accounts, and in the resulting dialog box, arrow up or down to the account she's trying to change the setting on. Once highlighted, press alt+P for the properties dialog box, then control+tab to go to the Advanced tab. One thing I would recommend is to leave the copy of messages on the server, but check the box after that that says, "Remove from server when deleted from the 'deleted items' folder", this will ensure that she's got a copy of the messages she wants to keep or archive, but deletes the messages she doesn't want to keep when she clears her deleted items folder. Just a thought, but feel free to act according to the person's needs. I was almost sure there was an advanced page to accomplish this task. No luck. So, without look express, how do you get to the location to manage things on the server? I think we tried all menus. Re: [JAWS-Users] Can i get step by step instructions for converting M4A to MP3 files?
Hi Ron, Here's a tutorial I wrote on how to use the batch converter, a feature that GoldWave has. This will allow you to do more than one file at a time, and you don't have to sit there and wait for the file to decompress in the main window. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. ***Begin Tutorial*** If you are in the Gold Wave main window, once it opens up, if you press the alt+F to get to the file menu, then press the letter B for batch conversions, it will open up another dialog box that you can do batch conversions with, or you can choose to do just one file, it's up to you. Once in that dialog box, tab to the button that says add, and press the space bar. Another dialog box will pop up, similar to the save as dialog box, so if you know exactly where the file is, go ahead and type it in. If you don't know the exact file location, just do a shift+tab to the window just above the one you're in, and backspace four or five times, or until your screen reader reads out my documents. Once it says that, just go ahead and find the folder where the files are that you want to convert. Once you find the files, go ahead and select them, either, contiguously, or non-contiguously, and tab to the open button and press the spacebar. Once you press the open button, you'll land back on the add button. If you have more files you want to convert, just press the add button and go through what I just outlined above. If you don't have anymore files to convert, you can tab to the check box that says, convert files to this format. Make sure this box is checked, so you can tell it what to convert the files to. Once you check that box, tab down to the combo box that asks you what file type to convert the files to. You must want to select the exact file type for all the files you want to convert. You can't do one file type for some of the files and another file type for another bunch of files you selected. That's why this function is called the batch conversion feature of Gold Wave. You can only convert the files to the same file type. Once you select the file format you want to convert the files to, tab down to the bitrate and frequency selection. I'm going to assume, for time's sake, that you already know all about bitrate and frequency rates, and just continue on from here to the next step. Once you set the bitrate and frequency rates, do a control+tab over to the file locations tab to set where you would like Gold Wave to save the converted files once their done. You have two choices here. You can either choose to save the converted files in their original folders, or save them in a different folder. This I leave up to you, and I can tell you that this tab is pretty much self-explanatory, so go ahead and make your settings as you see fit. Once you've made your selection, just tab over to the button that says begin, and press the spacebar. Once a dialog box pops up, with an ok button, you're files are done converting, and you can just press the ok button. You'll land back on the begin button, so just tab over to the cancel button, then you'll land on the Gold Wave main window. You can just alt+F4 out of that, and you can go delete the pre-converted files. Just make sure you clear your recycle bin, as those files will use up a lot of space on your computer. I would also recommend you check the files for length and bitrate choice, as you can always go back into your recycle bin and restore the files you deleted, so I suggest you check the files before you empty the recycle bin. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, and I'll endeavour to answer them as quickly as possible. Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW and balance of sound for headsets
There's also the option of getting your employer to purchase a single ear headset with an ear loop, instead of an actual headband, that way you can have Jaws flowing out of one ear, and the phone call from another ear, using a separate headset on each ear. These are available pretty much anywhere, Best Buy, Staples, Wal-Mart/Amazon, etc.. You can also employ a second sound card through which you can filter Jaws, while the phone call comes through the main sound card, that sort of thing. Unfortunately, there are so many options for doing this, but none that will allow you to use the same sound card, as that is undoable, unless you go into the volume mixer, and move each sound to the left and right ear. For example, opening the sound mixer will give you the ability to move Jaws sounds to the right ear, while allowing you to move the main sound, or what ever application you use for the phone calls to move to the opposite ear. Just thinking out loud here, but I think this would be the most effective and most inexpensive. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] beware-Microsoft-plans-to-push-windows-10-on-seven and eight users
I'm with Jim on this one. I have to acknowledge that Windows 10 has boosted the performance of my 7 year-old clunker quite nicely. That's not to say there aren't bugs with Jaws and Windows 10, but as with previous versions of Jaws and Windows, we have to simply make due with what we have, and find alternative ways of doing what we want until Freedom Scientific comes around with an update that fixes the problem. Having said that Gerald, where are you seeing all the complaints from current Jaws users grieving about upgrading to Windows 10. I've heard nothing but positive remarks about Windows 10, and though some of it's features are unwelcome, such as no say over what updates to install, or some other things I haven't quite gotten the hang of yet, I've seen all the positives Windows 10 has to offer. In Gerald's favour though, I have to admit the parallels to various high tech horror movies where computers all over the world are forced to install a certain operating system, only to have the operating system launch nuclear warheads, killing off half the population of the world, then using the video screens, enslaving the rest of the population to keep it's machines running, meanwhile, a small but dauntless band of computer users and hackers, mostly blind because they couldn't see the video screens, use Jaws to undermine the operating system and bringing it down. I mean, how many horror movies have we seen like this? LOL. Anyway, I don't think you have a right to complain about something, without having tried the something you're complaining about Gerald, otherwise you become one of those religious televangelists who condemn shows and movies without actually having watched the shows or movies they're condemning. Re: [JAWS-Users] AVG 2016 Versus Microsoft Essentials
I would also like to add that I've used MSE since it's release, and while it's initial release left much to be desired, Since Windows 7, it's been terrific. I have not been infected at all since it's installation, and if you're getting that many infections, then maybe it's time you reviewed your downloading habits, and your e-mail security settings. If you're careful about what you download, and don't just download indiscriminately, there's no reason why one would get a virus. Keep in mind that I am talking viruses and not spyware or malware, as those are more like tracking beacons and items that are used to track your usage on the Internet, and those can't be caught just using one program. In order to get complete results, one must use multiple malware and spyware detection utilities because, as you may or may not know, there is no central database of definitions in which to draw from, and so each company has their own list of definitions. Regardless of which, I don't think viruses are as rampant as these programs would like us to believe, and with a modicum of caution and a once a week scanning, one can avoid the hassles of viruses and their kin. Grins. Hope this helps. However, prior to Windows 10, Windows Defender was not secure enough to trust as your only antivirus program. In Windows 10 however, it has been upgraded, and is said to do a pretty good job. If you are lookking for a free solution, there are scarcely few options out there. I would recommend Vipre antivirus or Internet security, among the paid antivirus programs, it does seem to be the most accessable and reliable product out there. I believe that a 1 PC, 1 year license will run around $40, how ever, a lifetime subscr iption only cost about 2 years worth of subscr iptions. This can be used at no further cost for the life of your computer, and if you have more than one computer, they offer a 3 PC license and some larger ones. There is a tutorial on how to use McAfee with Jaws on the Windows 10 and Jaws mailing list web page, and it sounds as if it could also be very accessable, though I have no information of its cost. You would be welcome on that list if you would like to subscribe and download the tutorial. Good luck in your search. Re: [JAWS-Users] Gold Wave
Kevin, That's what the list is here for. I am, by no means, an expert on GoldWave, just simply did a few tutorials on a few features. I actually think that David has a couple of them on his site, but I'm not sure, but if I can't answer your question, I'm sure someone else will know. For example, I am perplexed by a phenomenon wherein the scripts are not working for my desktop computer, but they're working fine on my laptop computer. Aside from the computer's size, the only other difference between the two computer is that I upgraded from a Windows 7 on my desktop, and from a Windows 8.1 on my laptop. Everything else, Operating system, Windows 10 Home Premium, screen reader, Jaws latest build, and GoldWave versions, 5.69 are the same, yet specific areas on the GoldWave screen and Jaws functions simply aren't being voiced, and the edit boxes seem to have disappeared, or, at least, the information in them. LOL. Either way, like I said, if I have the answer to your question, I'll be more than happy to answer it. Smiles. Simply open up the GoldWave application, then press alt+F to go to the file menu, then the letter B to open up the Batch Conversion utility. Once the dialog box opens up, add the files you wish to create the effect on and then control+tab to the Process tab. where you'll land on an empty field. Once there, tab to the add effect... button and press your spacebar. In the resulting dialog box, you'll land on a tree view with several branches you can open up. For example, mine currently contains a GoldWave branch, a Direct X option, A GW Amp Branch, and a GW VST option. The Direct X and GWVST options I have never played with, and so I don't know what to do with those, but the GoldWave branch has all the utilities you'll need, so simply right arrow to open up the branch, then arrow down the list to the option you wish to use. Once you get to the option you wish to use, you will either hear the name of the option, in which case, you tab to the add button and press the spacebar, or you'll hear the word "closed". If it says "closed", then simply press the right arrow to open up that branch, and select the desired pre-set. To use an example. If I wish to amplify the volume on several files at once, I would add the files, then use the above keystrokes to get to the effects list. Once there, I would down arrow to the Dynamics effect, and right arrow to open it up. Once opened, I would then arrow down to the Blare option, which amplifies the volume of each track quite dramatically. This is usually the option I use to increase the volume on my files and it works perfectly. Once I've arrowed down to the blare option, I then tab to the add button, , then to the close button, unless I wish to add more effects, in which case, I just shift+tab back to the list of effects and continue down the line, remembering to add each effect in turn until I'm done, Once I am done, I tab to the close button and press the spacebar. Once this is done, and assuming you're not converting the bitrate and frequency of the files, I control+tab over to the convert tab to ensure that the "Convert Files to This Format" option is unchecked, but if you are changing this option, you make sure that the box is checked, and select the proper frequency. Again, this is how I do it, you may elect to do something else, but suffice it to say, one instruction I gave a previous poster was to open up a single file, and try to amplify the volume on one file. Once you've got the idea of what you need to do to accomplish this task, you can then transfer it to the batch conversion utility, as everything you find in the effects and edit menus of the regular GoldWave window, will be listed in the batch conversion utility list. Once all of these items are selected, simply tab to the begin button, and press the spacebar to start the batch processing of the files. This is a rather basic set of instructions, so it's by no means comprehensive on the batch conversion utility, so if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Good luck. Re: [JAWS-Users] Very important, verifying your M S account in w-10
It would seem that the sign-in screen is not accessible either, as I just came from there, and couldn't read a thing with it. My OCR commands yielded nothing in terms of interactions, nor did the Jaws cursor. Having said that though, I did have sighted assistance in the form of my wife, and it would seem that even though Jaws wasn't reading anything on the page, the keyboard was still entering information on the page. The problem, of course, is that we don't know what field we're in and what information to place in those fields unless you have sighted assistance. One thing I did not have to do was Verify my account. It might be because I did not set up a Pin code, but either way, this was not a step I had to hurdle in order to get it to use my account. I was able to use the touch cursor successfully on my desktop, and had Microsoft send me a text code to my cell phone. Which I entered into my desktop correctly and verified my computer with my Microsoft account. However, we did not verify our laptop yet. So, this morning when it came on, my wife could not access her email. The reason why, was that Microsoft turned our anti-virus off, and under security, there was that same verify link. so, if you do not verify shortly after installing w-10, if you use a Microsoft account, this same thing will happen to you. I am not able to verify our laptop. After spending 1 and a half hours with Microsoft, they were not able to verify it either. So, waiting on a phone call, I did let them know that this verify screen is not accessible at all. So, why I am waiting, I am still trying to use the Jaws touch cursor to verify our laptop. Final thoughts, if you have sited help, use them to verify your Microsoft account, if not one of these days your anti-virus, will be turned off by Microsoft to remind you to verify your account. Jim, with all due respect, both my experience and Freedom Scientific state that a re-install of Jaws 16 is not necessary from Windows 8.1 to 10. I meant no offence by my statement, I was simply stating a facts as released by Freedom Scientific and my own experience installing Windows 10 on 46 computers to date, all of which were using Windows 8.1. This is not a spitting contest, just one person passing information on to another. I'm glad your experiences are vast, and you can offer as much experience as you can to the list, after all, that's what this list is here for, but I will not curtail my passing on of knowledge simply because you feel I am berating you for something I never berated you for. Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 security center
Hi Kevin, No, it did not work, though I could have sworn I posted that to the list, but thank you very much for your help. Not sure if you saw my detailed account of how I managed to Install Windows 10, but I basically had to shut down a number of background applications I had running in order to make sure that the download/installation could go through as it was supposed to. I also shut down my anti-virus/malware altogether, as opposed to simply shutting down the active monitoring. I also took the added precaution of disconnecting any peripherals I had connected to the computer, making sure that it wasn't a possible hardware conflict. Having said that, I did manage to figure out that the SoundBlaster sound card I had initially thought was the problem wa snot after all. I still managed to install the Windows 10 upgrade despite it still being installed on my system, so I've deduced it was a software issue all along. If you have any questions, or if you need me to re-post my message that detailed what I did, let me know, and I'll send it to you off list so as not to place a second copy on the Jaws-users server. Hi Dacia, No, you do not, because Freedom Scientific has stated that if you are upgrading from a Windows 8.1 computer to a Windows 10, as long as you have the latest version of Jaws 16, then you should be good to go, and don't need to re-install a thing. Now, if you wish to download the Windows 10 media creation kit, so you can get your copy of Windows faster, then that's your prerogative, but there are no utilities you'll have to download for Jaws. While there are still bugs with this newest version of Windows, especially for us Jaws users, such as the inability to access the Start Menu search results, or the inability to access individual updates in order to deselect them from installation, the overall speed of my decrepit desktop has improved quite noticeably. The lag is much less then it was on Windows 7, and no, I have no idea whether Windows 8, or 8.1 would have helped that or not, but I can happily say that Windows 10 is much faster on my desktop computer, then Windows 7 was. In terms of hardware issues, I did not have any problems, even though I was assured of this fact from the Windows 10 upgrade utility, so that wasn’t as much a concern for me, especially when I remembered that I had a really old sound card from Creative Labs installed on there that was giving my old Windows 7 system a problem, and I even thought that that same sound card might have been the culprit in my inability to install Windows 10. As it is, I need not have worried, as Windows 10 by-passed that issue with no qualms whatsoever. There are some tips I can offer that will help the installation, and if you’re experiencing the issue I was having, with the upgrade stalling and/or discontinuing in the middle, you may want to pay attention. First, disable any malware or anti-virus that has real-time protection on your computer, and by disable, I don’t mean turn it off temporarily, I mean disable it from start up in the MS Config utility. This can be accomplished by pressing the Windows key+R to bring up the run dialog box, then typing msconfig in the edit box, and pressing enter. In the resulting dialog box, control+tab to the services tab, and uncheck the boxes that apply to your anti-virus or malware blocker applications. Once done, control+tab over to the start-up tab, and again, uncheck any boxes having to do with those applications, then tab to the apply button, then shift+tab over to the ok button. You may be prompted to re-start your computer, and if you are, go ahead and do so, but if you’re not, simply re-start your computer. Secondly, you may want to disable anything having to do with online services, such as Dropbox, iCloud services, Send Space Wizard, and non-essential services, such as Printer monitoring services and One Drive. While I can’t guarantee that these applications will give you problems, and I don’t have any confirmation as to whether these were the causes of my predicament, during the Windows 10 installation, you won’t need these services anyway, so it doesn’t hurt to disable them. Now, you don’t have to disable them using the MS Config utility, simply doing so from the task manager with control+shift+escape, just before you begin the installation process is enough. Now, the reason I told you to disable the anti-virus and anti-Malware applications through the MS Config utility, and not the online services is because your computer, or, at least, the Windows 10 installation wizard claims

As I said, I have no guarantee that these tips are absolutely necessary, as you’ve seen by other’s experiences, not everyone has suffered what I have suffered, and they’ve actually been successful in installing their Windows 7 to 10 upgrade. I am simply outlining what I did to ensure that my upgrade process when flawlessly and as smoothly as possible. Also, those of you using Jaws should know that I had sighted assistance, and so when the Windows log on and set up screen popped up, I was advised of this event. If you don’t have sighted assistance, then you will have to guess as to when this happens. I have no actual technical guidelines as to when this event takes place, but I can extrapolate that when you no longer hear any noises from your hard drive, assuming you aren’t running a solid state drive, this should be the ideal time to toggle Narrator on with a press of the Windows key+enter. You’ll enjoy the richer sounding voice that pops up. That keystroke is a toggle, so when you want to shut narrator down again, you simply have to press Windows key+enter again, or caps lock+escape to shut down Narrator. Again, some people may or may not have Jaws popping up when Windows logs on to the desktop, I can’t categorically state this will happen, but surprisingly, mine did, but I took the safe precaution, as Freedom Scientific suggested, of running the Windows 10 upgrade utility available on their website, then re-installing the latest build of Jaws 16. In my case, I uninstalled Jaws, while leaving shared component, and
Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade
I'm afraid that isn't the only way to fix the issue. You can always download the Windows 10 setup file, and do a clean install of the OS, which involves re-formatting your hard drive to that nothing is on the drive when you finally install Windows 10. I am also having this issue, so it may be that the tech guy you spoke to is trying to pawn Windows 8.1 off on you because he knows he can't make any money if you upgrade to Windows 10. If you have sighted help, then do it this way, which is what I'm gearing up to do, as I'm backing up all my files now. If you do not have sighted help, download the Windows unattended setup from somewhere, and use that. I'm sorry, I don't have a link for you since I do have sighted help to assist me in the install, but I'm sure you can Google Windows unattended Installation and you'll be good to go. What ever you do, don't give into your tech guy telling you have to upgrade to Windows 8.1, that's just ridiculous on it's face. Good luck. [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7
Hi Folks, Just changing the subject line to reflect the new route this thread has taken. I have just found out that one cannot simply do a re-format of the hard drive in order to install Windows 10, or to do a clean installation of Windows 10 and that Windows 10 must be installed as an upgrade. This is saddening, but alas, one can't really look a gift horse in the mouth. Some people have messaged me off-list and given me a few tips, such as uninstalling programs that I feel may interfere with the installation, and I'm still going to uninstall that really old sound card to see if that's the problem too, even though the Windows 10 upgrade assessment states that the sound card is not going to be a problem. In any case, if you want to read what I read about upgrading to Windows 10, please see the following link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-10/why-activate-windows-10 I'll let you all know what happens. Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade
HI Kevin, I'm afraid this method does not work as I attempted it, and the preparation stalled at around 11 and 18%. I even tried to run the set up directly from the MSI file instead of going through the download tool, and got the same result. I'm afraid that the only way to do this is to do it the way I spoke about in my last message. I'm not quite sure why this is the case. I'm thinking that maybe there may be a piece of hardware that is installed on my computer that is so old, that the Windows 10 set up utility can't figure it out. Not saying this is the case, I'm just thinking out loud, and this is actually a working theory I've come up with. I'm going to actually uninstall the actual piece of hardware I have on my computer that is so old, even Windows is afraid to touch it with a 10 foot installer, LOL, and see what happens when I try the installer again. Oh, and just for your information, the piece of hardware is an old SoundBlaster Sound card that's giving me the trouble, I believe, so watch for an update tomorrow at some point. Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade
Hi Fred, I think you should know that if your computer can run Windows 8.1, then it should have no problem running Windows 10, as it's the most slimmed down version of Windows I've ever seen thus far from them, especially when you take into account all the features it currently possesses. The computer I'm upgrading is a Windows 7, 32 bit computer, and it is about 7 years old, and I should know, since I built the monster myself. LOL. In any case, Windows 10 will give you less of a learning curve from 7 to 10, not to mention handling your resources much more effectively. What ever you decide to do, good luck. Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: desktop
HI Jim, I'm afraid this isn't correct. If you press alt+enter on the This PC icon, this will bring up the system properties, in which case, you have to tab to system tools, press enter, then tab to disk clean up, where you can choose which drive you wish to run the disk clean up wizard on. An easier way of accomplishing this task is to open up This PC, then arrow to the drive you wish to run a disk clean up on, and press alt+enter. This will bring up the drive's properties, then tabbing to the disk clean up button, you can press the spacebar, and the wizard will automatically scan your drive for unnecessary files to be deleted. I can't remember if it will delete cookies and the like, as I think you'll have to go into Internet Options for that, but at least you'll be able to delete temporary internet files and Windows temp files and such like. I should also point out that when you have the drive's properties opened, a press of control+tab will take you to the tools page of the drive where you can run a scan disk, a defrag and a back-up, depending on your preference. Good luck. Scorpio -Original Message- From: Jim Rawls Sent: Thursday, August 27, 2015 8:43 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: desktop Go to this PC. Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: desktop
Hi Kevin, This is indicative of a slow computer, but have no fear, all is well. If you have set Jaws to start at the log on screen, it will announce the log on screen, and eventually shut down to load Windows, at which point, the actual application starts up on the normal desktop. Having start Jaws at the log on screen is good because your computer will sometimes have to complete updating, and you won't know it unless Jaws is set to start at the log on screen, so better to leave it like this. Having said that, if this is a new computer, you may want to check out what you have starting up on boot up, as it sounds like you've got quite a bit, possibly software checking for updates and the like, DropBox folder sync-ing and stuff like that. In any case, yes, this is completely normal, as Jaws will start up twice, once at the log on screen, then upon Windows booting up to the desktop. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: desktop
Hi, You can press Windows key+R to get the run dialog box, then, in the run edit field, type in control userpasswords2, without the quotes, and press enter. In the resulting dialog box, uncheck the box that says, users must type a password to use this computer, and make sure it's unchecked. Tab to the ok button, and press enter or the spacebar. You'll receive a dialog box prompting you to select the default user and to enter the password associated with that user. Once you select and type in the default username and password, tab to the ok button, and press the spacebar. At this point, you can close the userpasswords2 dialog box, if it's still open, or unless you want to make more advanced modifications in one of the other tabs, and from that point onwards, it should boot directly into the desktop. Re: [JAWS-Users] need help!!! not able to get windows 10
I'm not quite understanding why you simply don't go to microsoft's website and get it yourself. You say you're willing to pay for it, I've given you the Microsoft price, as well as the price at Best Buy, and if you get to the Microsoft website within the next year, there's a good chance you won't have to pay the one hundred and nineteen dollars they would ask you to pay. Given that the icon is not showing up in your system tray, I think this would be the better bet, so go to the below link, and get Windows 10 directly from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com Good luck. Re: [JAWS-Users] need help!!! not able to get windows 10
Hi Petras, I think I saw that you live in California, and if that's the case, I believe you can get a full version of Windows 10 for $119 USD (United States Dollars), keep in mind that this price does not include taxes or shipping and delivery, if charged. In any case, this price is directly from Microsoft if you want to purchase it, and I believe Best Buy was selling it at more or less the same price, so, unless you're looking for Windows 10 Professional, you won't have to pay $199. Good luck. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] messed up a computer with malware
Hi Lenny, As the other person suggested, do a system restore to a time before you did the malware scan, but I would suggest you go through the services and start-up panels of the MS configuration file to see if anything unrecognizable is starting up. In other words, look for the malware manually before you actually do a malware scan, that way you have more control over what it finds and what it doesn't. After you've disabled that things that are causing her system to start up slowly, go into the installed programs, which, if using Windows Vista, 7 or 8, will be called Programs and Features, and uninstall all unrecognizable programs that have been installed that sound like viruses and/or iffy programs. You might also want to look at the add-ones currently installed in her browser, whether it be Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Chrome. Either way, this may very well be some really weird toolbars or other stuff that has gotten installed without her knowledge, or worse, with her knowledge, but still she chose to install them because she thought they wouldn't do any harm. I love it when girlfriends, wives and daughters install stuff they don't think will do any harm. It's what keeps me in business. LOL. Anyway, good luck with your project dujour. Smiles. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Google Search
A Google search functions just fine for me. I type in the search criteria after I've logged into my Google account, press enter, then press the letter H to go directly to the headings of the search results. Each hit is a heading, so you can simply press H all the way down the page, at which point, if one wants more information on a particular hit, one simply arrows down from that particular heading. Just so I don't lose my place in the hit list, I have my search results to display on a separate tab or page when I enter on one of the hits I want to view, that way, once I've seen if that hit yielded the desired results, I can either choose to save it for off-line viewing, add it to my favourites, or do what ever I need with it. I am assured however, that whether I have gleaned the information I needed from the viewed page, that I'll be returned to my place in the hit list to keep looking for results. This setting comes in handy as I have my results set to display 100 hit per page. Either way, I've never had any problems that I can think of when doing a Google search on the regular site of http://www.google.com/ I even have my homepage set to it, which is kind of redundant, I know, as my default search engine is set as Google, and I can actually search from the address bar, but old habits die hard. LOL. Either way, I am also using Windows 7 home edition, with Jaws 16, and Internet Explorer 11. Perhaps that could be your problem? Not updating to the newest version of Internet Explorer? Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows pop up warning message XP
Hi Ann, Are you plugging any sort of hardware into the computer that you haven't plugged in before. If yes, and you know the drivers are good, simply proceed with the driver installation. If you don't trust the device, then simply unplug the device or hardware, download the proper signed drivers from the manufacturer's website, and install them from that point forward. On the other hand, if you're not plugging anything new hardware into the computer, and you're still getting that message, try re-starting your computer, and see if that helps. Alternatively, you may have to get some sighted assistance to open up the device manager, and ask them to look for any devices which have an exclamation mark in front of them. This will be the device giving you the problem. Hope this helps. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] New Printer
I am currently using a Brother 685CW all in one inkjet printer. It's a great printer, with a very large display that can be tilted to accommodate the user, and with the large screen, it's great for persons with low vision. The one thing I like about this printer is that the software you install on your computer, has a remote setup on it, which, once a setting is adjusted, makes the process completely accessible, though it does need some work on the cartridge screen. In any case, this model comes with a digital voicemail feature, and speaker phone, a dial pad, and can function as a stand alone model, so you don't have to rely on the PC to do any faxing. It's also got three different methods of access. It will connect to your computer via USB cable, in which case, if you want to be able to print with your other devices or computers/laptops/tablets, you will have to share the printer, which also means that your computer will have to remain on when you print from the other devices, but the great thing about this printer is that it will also connect through RJ-45 LAN cable to your router, or Wi-Fi, meaning if you use these methods of connection, it now becomes a network printer, and you can print anytime you want over the wireless connection in your home. It's also got a USB, SD card and MMC card slot which allows you to edit pictures directly on the printer screen for printing, or for importing onto your computer. The other great thing about this multi-function printer is that it's got both a document feeder, and a flat bed scanner, so you're not relegated to just the one scanning type. Either way, Once you install the Brother Status Monitor and Control Center, and the application is launched and you're in the main window, use your Jaws cursor to left click on the configure button, which will bring up a menu. In that menu, you'll find a Settings sub-menu, press the enter key, or the right arrow key to expand the sub-menu, followed by a down arrow to Skin Select and press enter to activate. In the resulting dialog box, select the classic menu, and you'll have access to all the button and tabs on the application. If you don't know how to use the Jaws cursor, then you will need sighted assistance, as I'm not sure the tab and spacebar key will allow you to get to and activate, respectively, the configure button that activates the menu you need to access in order to change the skin, but one can always try. In any case, I'm not sure if they still sell this particular model or not, but if you're willing to pay a bit more, then you can get an Air Drop model that allows you to print from your iPhone using Brother's cell phone app. Oh, and this model also comes with a handset, so it functions as a stand alone telephone, and once you're in the remote setup for the machine, you can control the number of rings, whether you want the machine to functions solely as a fax machine, tax/telephone machine, or one or the other. You can also configure the telephone code to remotely start the fax so that if you're not near the machine, you can pickup any phone in your house, press a key combination, and the fax machine will start up. You can also configure whether the incoming fax gets printed, or gets imported into your computer, and into your favourite application for processing, such as Kurzweill, or Open Book. Anyway, hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] Is it my laptop keyboard or Jaws? (edited)
Hi Sherri, It's most likely the touch pad located just below your keyboard. You have to turn the touch pad sensitivity level down, so it's not picking up your palm movements and the like. Alternatively, you can turn the touch pad completely off, but if sighted users use the laptop also, this may present a problem for them when they go to use the computer, though some laptops have a hotkey to turn the touch pad on and off. Alternatively, you can tape a piece of paper over the touch pad, so that your hand isn't making contact with the pad itself. This is what a friend of mine did, it it turned out to be successful. If you need more information on how to perform the above tasks, send us your laptop manufacturer, model and if possible, your serial number, and someone, more than likely me, can send you the relevant text from your laptop's manual. Well, except for the taping part, that one you'll have to manage on your own. LOL. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] Skype
There's nothing remotely visual about this process. You have one of two options for doing this. The first option is, as David pointed out, going through the Skype interface, and unchecking the box which says to run Skype when Windows Starts. I believe there's one more box to uncheck, something about including Skype to call service with your internet browser, but don't quote me on that. The second method, is to run the MSCONFIG utility on your computer. Type in msconfig in the run dialog box and press enter. In the resulting dialog box, control+tab to the services tab, and arrow down the list and uncheck everything you see wit the word Skype in it. Once done, control+tab to the start-up tab, and again, arrow through the list of checkboxes, and uncheck all the items with the word Skype in it. Once done, tab to the apply button, and press the spacebar. Press shift+tab a few times until you get to the ok button, and press the spacebar again. At this point, you may or may not be prompted to re-start your computer. Feel free to accept or decline this offer. From this point on, when you turn on your computer, Skype with not start automatically, as soon as your computer boots up. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] turbotax and jaws
It is accessible for the most part. It often has focus issues, but none that can't be solved by an alt+tab, or a seek of the Jaws cursor, but the easy step interview function is a great time saver, and that part is very accessible. Intuit is touting it as very accessible, and though I have found their claims to be lack lustre in the past with their Canadian version of Turbo Tax called QuickTax, this new version seems to be much better than it's previous incarnation. In any case, I believe there's a web version that is supposed to be fully accessible. I would suggest you try that version out first, as it's html interface should be much more accessible with Jaws, as well, you can have access to their live support if you find it inaccessible. [JAWS-Users] Alternative way of booting into a computer's BIOS
Hi Folks, I just got a new laptop, and in my haste to attain the fastest laptop known to man, I installed a solid state drive in place of the 5400 rpm drive that was originally installed. So, with that in mind, I did manage to attain the speeds I was looking for, but at a cost, for you see, like most laptops today, the manufacturer has switched the function key settings to their alternate functions, which wouldn’t normally be a problem, as I could simply go into the BIOS settings and change the settings around, however, the boot up time with a solid state drive is practically non-existent. In fact, if I didn’t know better, I’d swear the computer simply went to sleep instead of shutting all the way down. It literally takes about two or three seconds for the boot up process to finish, and so I don’t have enough time to boot into the BIOS setup screen to make the change. My question then, is if there’s a way to boot into the BIOS instead of having to press the setup keystroke. For those who don’t know what the heck I’m talking about... When you turn on a computer, any computer, pressing a keystroke before Windows loads will get you into the motherboard settings which will control your computer from under the hood, so to speak. Well, with the speed of the boot up, I don’t have time to go into the settings using the traditional methods, and so I need an alternative way to do this. I’m using Jaws 15, latest build, Windows 8.1 and an HP Envy laptop. Any suggestions would be welcome. Re: [JAWS-Users] changes to the server
David, You may not want to do that since there's been a release of a hack that allows XP to receive updates until 2019. While Microsoft is not denouncing this hack as being against their terms of conditions of license, they are saying that people should use the hack at their own risk since it's mainly for server stations, and professionals. Re: [JAWS-Users] external portable harddrive
Hi Kevin, Depending on whether the drive is self powered, or USB powered, it could be an issue of the drive not getting enough power to run. Make sure that the drive is powered on properly, meaning all electrical connections are made and any power buttons are switched to the on position. Also, make sure that the drive is plugged into a USB 2.0 port, and nothing less. This actually helps you with my next point, which is that if the drive is not self powered, meaning there are no electrical cords to plug into an electrical socket, then you can only use a USB 2.0 port, or else, get a USB cord with two USB male connections on one side so you can plug it into two USB 1.0, or 1.1 ports, as that's the only way you'll get the drive to have enough power to run. Hi Gerald, I'm confused, when you go to your system tray with the Jaws Key+F11, then go to the PC Potentially Unprotected, then left double click on the item, you should be able to use your Jaws cursor to see why your PC is potentially unprotected. Re: [JAWS-Users] is it normal for a lab tops battery to go after one year
Sorry if this has been covered already, but it *is* very much possible to run the battery down after one year, especially if you've been using your laptop with the battery left on and the AC plug constantly plugged into the electricity and the laptop, in other words, in a perpetual state of re-charging. While laptop manufacturers claim this isn't supposed to shorten the life of the laptop's battery, it does. If you feel your laptop is going to be plugged in for a while, take out the battery and just run it off of the AC adapter. The only issue you should have with this is that should you lose power in the house, your battery won't have your back, but then you should be saving your work in any case every so often. Having said that, one of the first steps in getting a new laptop is to power it up and cycle it completely down, that is, run it off the battery until you get the Windows message that only 2% of battery is remaining on the charge, then charge it back up, then cycle it down again. Do this for the first five or ten charges, and this will, in brief, teach the battery how to charge, for lack of a better term. Just like a guidedog, laptop batteries have their own training, and it must be adhered to, lest your battery go to the battery heaven in the sky. Smiles. Again, I apologize if this has been covered. My computer was down with hard drive problems, and I've just recently gotten my computer back up and running. I haven't really done in-depth experimentation on just how high the dpi has to be before it reverts back to the new Yahoo mail, but, like I said, bringing the screen resolution to 800 by 600 should to the trick for sure. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and ZoomText?
ZoomText must start before Jaws, so enable ZoomText to start automatically, and Jaws to not to start automatically at boot up. Unfortunately, Jaws' video intercept interferes when ZoomText tries to read something, so having it start after ZoomText allows ZoomText to use the MSAA function built into Windows, and Jaws to load it's video intercept on top of what ever ZoomText places in place to be able to magnify the screen. You should also disable any speech component of ZoomText so you don't get double talk without actually wanting it. LOL. Re: [JAWS-Users] winamp and playing more then one song
Hi Rick, I should have been more clear. When I say residual ghost images of files played in the last instance, I meant within the playlist editor, not specifically on your computer as an M3U file. If you play a track and close Winamp, then simply open up an instance of Winamp without entering on a particular track on your hard drive, in other words, by entering on the Winamp icon on your desktop or start menu, if you press the spacebar, you'll find that it will start playing the same track you played the last time you used Winamp to play a file. I just checked, and while they've fixed this particular bug and the track does not start playing if you press the spacebar, the track list still appears in the playlist editor, so, as long as you haven't moved that file from it's original location when you first played it within Winamp, entering on that track from within the playlist editor will start playing that song. That also means that if you add any tracks to Winamp, they will be added below that first title, and, if you're listing to a particular raunchy audio book just prior to creating a kids party playlist, there's going to be a bit of embarrassment when you first turn on the playlist. LOL. Suffice it to say, I didn't mean that it would actually save a file on your hard drive, though, I guess, in order for Winamp to do what I mentioned above, I guess it would have to store a file on your hard drive, though I've never actually investigated whether Winamp does this within the temporary memory, or permanently on your hard drive, but as I've found this to be the case, even after re-booting my computer, I would say that it's a good guess that the file gets saved on your hard drive. As for the control+S keystroke, it's been in effect since version 4.5 and onwards, though I can't say for sure that it's been around longer than that. I have listed below the compendium of Winamp keystrokes for Jaws just in case there are any discrepancies, with the below keystrokes being taken directly from the Jaws application help file. Unfortunately, Jaws help does not offer keystrokes for the Winamp Library or the Winamp Video windows, but if and when I find such beasts, I'll be sure to update and post the new information. Re: [JAWS-Users] winamp and playing more then one song
Hi Brad, Here is a tutorial I wrote some time ago on how to create, manage and play Winamp playlists. This should answer most of your questions, however, this is quite an old tutorial, and some keystrokes have been discovered that make creating playlists much easier than the methods outlined in the below tutorial. For example, if you would like to play all the files within a specific folder, simply highlight the folder, then press your applications key, or shift+F10 if you are without such a key, and press P for play in Winamp. Depending on what else you have that starts with the letter P within that context menu, you'll either have to press enter on that option, or the command will activate right away. You'll have to decide which is the case for your particular situation or computer configuration. Also, you can do the same with specific songs within the same folder by going into a particular folder, pressing the end key to go to the bottom of the file list, and pressing control+up arrow selecting the tracks you wish to include in the playlist with control+spacebar. Once you've selected all the tracks you wish to play, press the applications menu or shift+F10 and press P for play in Winamp and the songs will automatically be placed in a Winamp playlist which you can then save for later access. Also, should you wish to add more songs to the above playlist, go into the second folder, or third or fourth, depending on how many times you wish to go into and out of folders, follow the same steps as above for selecting tracks to include, then once all the songs are selected, press the applications menu or shift+F10 and arrow down to add to Winamp, and the tracks you selected will be placed at the bottom of the playlist you created from the previous folder. You can do this for as many songs or tracks you'd like in however many folders you wish to include. Once you've added all the songs, just save the playlist like the instructions below. There are other shortcut steps I've discovered, but those will come at a later time when I've updated the tutorial. In the meantime, hope the below tutorial helps in some way. ***Begin Tutorial*** Believe it or not, it's easier to create a playlist with Winamp, than it sounds. First, go to your desktop, or where ever you keep the Winamp shortcut, and enter on it. Once the Winamp window opens, control+tab twice to get to the playlist editor. If you find that you've used the control+tab keystroke twice, and Jaws didn't say playlist editor, then that means you have the playlist editor closed. You can open it in one of two ways. You can press the keystroke of alt+E, or you can press alt+F, then arrow down to playlist editor and enter on it. I think you'll find the alt+E keystroke is easier. Smile. In any case, once Jaws reports that the playlist editor is opened, control+tab up to the playlist editor. Now, this is going to sound weird, but go with me on this. Once you land in the playlist editor, press control+A to highlight everything, then press delete. Don't worry if Jaws doesn't say anything, what you've essentially done is delete any tracks that were in there from the last time you used Winamp to listen to something. Unfortunately, Winamp likes to leave residual ghost images of files it's played in the last instance, and so, in order to create a clean playlist, you have to delete what was previously there. So, now that you've done that, press the letter L for lists, and this will open up an open dialog box. Those of you familiar with downloading from send space, or saving as and the like, will be familiar with this dialog box. When this dialog box opens, you'll land on the filename edit box. Do a shift+tab to go to the file list window just above the filename edit box. Now, depending on where you last took Winamp, you won't know where you'll be in the file list, so a good rule of thumb is to press the backspace key seven or eight times until Jaws stops talking. When he does, do a say line command with insert+up arrow, and Jaws should read out, Not Selected My Documents. This means you're on your desktop, and you can now go to the folder where the files are that you want to play. So, if the files are in a folder three levels deep into your my documents folder, let's call it Thea's audio files, you would press the spacebar to select My Documents, press the enter key to go into that folder, then arrow or find the folder titled Thea's Personal Files, highlight it, then press enter. Once in that folder, find the next folder, called Thea in Hawaii, enter on it, and finally go to Thea's audio files, and press enter. Be careful here, you don't want to make a common mistake that everyone makes, even me before I realized it, smile, do not touch any of the arrow keys, or the spacebar key, or anything on your keyboard until you've done a select all with control+A, and I'll explain later. Once you've done the control+A, tab to the open button in the
Re: [JAWS-Users] Shrink document to one page in Word 2010
HI Brian and Dean, This is great advice, and therefore confirms that the features still does exist in Office 2010. Does anyone know where on the ribbons this feature would be? Not trying to be difficult, and, in fact, I'll be taking both gentlemen's advice and adding the appropriate buttons and keyboard shortcuts to my repertoire, but it would be nice to be able to tell a friend or just someone asking me for my help where they can go to find this feature from within the ribbons. Thanks again for the great advice. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] Shrink document to one page in Word 2010
Hi Folks, I can't remember if I've asked this before, but thought I would bring it up again in case someone has come along and knows how to do it. Back in Word 2003, within the Print Preview window, there used to be a toolbar button that would take various elements of a document like font, line spacing, margin width and length and various other properties, and alter them, upon command, of course, to bring everything to one page. So, for example, if I had a document, let's say for argument's sake, this is a formal letter to someone that is about so many words in length, and the letter would take up only one page, if not for the signature line at the bottom which seems to be showing up on the second page, which is not professional in the least. So, one would go into the file menu, enter on print preview, and, in the resulting window, one would press the alt key to activate the menu bar, then control+tab to get to the toolbar whereby you could move to the right and enter on the button which had an image of multiple pages with an curved arrow pointing to one page on the right side of the button. I found this button to be a Godsend, especially where I was writing quick format letters that would invariably creep onto the second page with my name at the bottom. Does anyone know if this feature has been moved over into Word 2010 and if so, how does one go about getting to it? I thought it was called fit to page, but that particular features seems to do something completely different from what I need. If anyone has any advice on what I have to do to get this feature back I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks all. [JAWS-Users] App Mode in Internet Explorer
Hi Folks, I'm not sure if this is affecting everyone, but Yahoo Mail, in particular, Rogers Yahoo has begun using app mode on their website so that you must negotiate various app modules on the webpage rather than HTML. Does anyone know of any tricks to using this sort of configuration, or even how to navigate through it in a quick manner? One of the reasons I check my webmail is because I have to check my spam folder every now and again, and I would hate to shut that feature off with the sheer number of e-mails I get per day. In any case, the links aren't anywhere near what a person is used to entering on. Where the spam and trash folders used to have separate links to empty all the messages from the respective folders, now they seem to be merged onto one link so that you don't know what you're entering on. I have to deal with this on two machines, a Windows XP and Windows 7 machine using Jaws 12, latest build on both, and Internet Explorer 8, again, the latest build. Any tips on this phenomenon would be greatly appreciated. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] Win amp.
Hi Mandy, When you get to the folder containing all of the files, instead of pressing enter on it to go into it, press your applications key, or shift+F10, if you don't have an applications key, then the letter P for Play with Winamp. The letter P may activate the menu item, or it may take you directly there. If it does nothing except take you directly there, press enter to activate the menu item. At this point, or very near this point, possibly a few seconds, depending on whether your computer happens to be doing something else at the time, the files will start playing. I've pasted below a tutorial I did not too long ago on how to create, manage and play playlists with Winamp. While you can use the method above to actually get the files to Winamp in lieu of the method below, you can still use the method below if you wish to add more tracks to the playlist. You can also do the above process, but instead of pressing the P key to get to Play in Winamp, you can press the letter E for the option to include in Winamp. At this point, the folder or files you've selected will be appended to the end of your playlist while the tracks are playing, or you've paused it. While I wrote the below for an earlier version of Winamp, the keystrokes and all that other stuff are the same. Once you've done the control+A, tab to the open button in the dialog box, and press the spacebar to allow Winamp to place all the files you just selected into the playlist. Now, the reason I said not to touch anything once you land in the folder is because Winamp, and, indeed, Windows, in it's infinite wisdom, has a little bug. In most cases, when you're selecting a bunch of files to transfer over to another drive or whatever, say you want all the files except for the first one, a person using common sense would arrow down to the second file, then press control+shift+end to highlight all the files from that point downward. Once they're selected, the person would copy or cut the files, go to the destination where they want the file placed, then paste them in there. Only one problem, you suddenly notice that the last file that was at the bottom of the list,

[JAWS-Users] Accessing the Windows Language Bar
Hi All, I'd like to know if it's possible to access the language bar that comes pre-installed with Windows, either XP, or Windows 7, and if so, is anyone using it successfully with Jaws? Re: [JAWS-Users] winamp with jaws 13
Hello Ming, Please make sure that you are in the right Winamp pane when you're adjusting the volume. The volume up and down keys only work in the Winamp main window. Try control+tab to go around the Winamp panes until you get to the Winamp main window. The easiest way to figure out which is the Winamp main window if Jaws isn't telling you is to try to turn up the volume or turn it down after each press of control+tab. Once you hear that the volume has changed, you know you're in the Winamp main window. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW 13 OCR
While very long PDF documents are better left to Open Book, or Kurzweill, the OCR function in Jaws 13 could come in handy for checking out fax pages received by e-mail, and if the fax contains multiple pages, one can OCR the first page, then press control+page down to go to the next page, and use the OCR tool to read that second page, and so on down the number of pages in the fax. This will definitely come in very handy for me in my business. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] GoldWave File Length and Splitting Issue
Hi Folks, I am attempting to split a large file into smaller chunks and I'm having trouble with it for the first time ever. First, the relevant facts... I'm currently using the latest build of GoldWave and Jaws 12, and the latest GoldWave scripts from the Jaws-Users scripts page. I'm also using Windows XP home edition on a Toshiba laptop. Now the particulars of the case. The file I'm trying to split is just under 6 and a half hours long, this according to Winamp, my BookSense XT and the status line under Windows Explorer. Once loaded into GoldWave, however, GoldWave reports that the file is only 23 minutes and 17 seconds long after doing a control+A to highlight the entire file. I've even attempted to move, both the start and end markers to the end of the file, and playing on from there, but no go. I can't for the life of me understand why I can't get past the 23 minutes and 17 second mark. A few possibly irrelevant facts are that this is an Audible converted file, and though GoldWave states that there's only 23 minutes in the file, when I play the file on my BookSense XT, or in Winamp, the entire file is there at just under six hours and a half. Another possibly irrelevant fact is that when reading the status bar in Windows Explorer, the status line is reading the entire file is there at the 6 and a half hours, but it's stating that it's a quicktime format file, even though the extension is MP3. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening, I would appreciate your input. Thanks. Scorpio For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] Looking For Any Tutorials on How to Record a Tutorial
Hi Folks, I have tried to look at various locations, but have not been able to find a tutorial, written or in audio, on how to record a tutorial using my computer. I have heard the type of tutorial I would like to record, that being one with Jaws and my voice being recorded at the same time, but I haven't seen any out there that teach one what settings/programs to use, or what sort of set-up I would need in order to accomplish this sort of thing. I do have a headset/microphone combo and GoldWave, latest build at my disposal, so it's not like Im lacking, so it's just a matter of letting me know how I can make it so Jaws comes through the recording as part of the recording, and not something that just happens to be caught by my microphone in the background, if that makes any sense. [JAWS-Users] Telephone Numbers Not Displaying on Webpages
Hi Folks, Is anyone having a problem while using Jaws 12, latest build, Windows XP, and Internet Explorer 8, that when ever you go to a website looking for a telephone number on their contact us page, the phone number is plastered all over the page, however, not the entire phone number is displayed, only the first few numbers, followed by several dots. For example, I just went to the Do Not Call Registry looking for the telephone registration number, and I got a 1-800- Is this a Jaws issue, an Internet Explorer issue, or are WebPages specifically trying to keep us from telephone them? I have also been having trouble with this same issue. Using Jaws 12, and Windows XP, but using Internet explorer 8, and Outlook Express 6. I encounter this issue, mainly on WebPages though, and not necessarily in the file explorers. I also seem to have trouble with Outlook Express, again, with the same focus issues, and reading the message directly after the message I just landed on, after deleting the message I was just reading in the preview pane. There's also a setting you can set in the Google search preferences at the top of the tabbing order somewhere, that will allow you to filter out x-rated hits and so on and so forth, and you can set it to exclude those kinds of results. [JAWS-Users] Cursor Jumping Around With Jaws 12
Hi Folks, Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this for themselves? When I'm on a webpage, the focus seems to jump from one place to another, and links aren't activating when entering on them in several cases. The same is happening with Outlook Express, where the message will read the one before it, or, it'll say not selected on the message after the one I'm actually sitting on, and so I have to wait until Jaws reads the headers of the next message before I can read the headers of the current message I'm sitting on. Websites are the worst though. I'll be on one part of the page, and suddenly the focus will jump to another area of the page, or, Jaws will be sluggish and slow to respond to my keystrokes on a webpage. Another example I can posit is on the Yahoo Webmail site, when I'm sitting on a message, and I'm in the first heading of the page, where the subject line is, I'll try to tab to the add to address book link, and it jumps to the end of the message, several links down, and so have to shift+tab up to the link I wanted in the first place. Again, I'm using the latest build of Jaws 12, Windows XP, Internet Explorer 8, and Outlook Express 6. Aside from the Yahoo mail site, located at: http://mail.yahoo.com I can give the following website as an example where the focus and cursor jump around drastically, and Jaws is slow to respond: http://www.futureshop.ca I hope people can, either, corroborate my experiences, or have a solution that will help me solve the issues. [JAWS-Users] Going Back to Internet Explorer 7 from Internet Explorer 8
In response to the person having a dilemma using Internet explorer 8 with her earlier version of Jaws, here is something I wrote up for someone else, and thought it could be used in this instance. *Please read the below document in it's entirety before performing any part of this tutorial. This is done to help you know what will be happening with your computer during the processes detailed below. Once you have completed the steps, Windows Internet Explorer 8 will have been uninstalled, and your computer will re-install Internet Explorer 7 by default and on it's own, which worked much better with earlier versions of Jaws, prior to version 10. Make sure to follow these steps to the letter, and keep referring back to this document when needed. Do the following to uninstall Internet Explorer 8. 1. activate the start menu with the start menu key to the right of the control key on the left hand side of the keyboard , or press the keystroke of control+escape. 2. press the letter S until you get to settings and press enter to activate the sub-menu. If you do not hear settings, and hear control panel instead, then just press the enter key to go into the control panel. The first thing you should hear Jaws say is Accessibility Options:. If you do not hear this, then press the enter key until you do. If you do hear Jaws say this, then continue to the next step. 3. press the letter A until you hear Jaws say Add or Remove Programs and press enter. Once you press enter, a dialog box will pop up, and Jaws will focus on the Change and Remove Programs button. At this point, you should wait for the program list to load, which could take a few minutes depending on your computer. 4. I believe that earlier versions of Jaws, from 9 and down, still read the program list as not selected, and if that's the case, disregard the not selected part, and arrow down the list to Windows Internet Explorer 8. 5. tab until you hear Jaws say, Windows Internet Explorer 8 Remove Button and press enter to start the uninstallation process. 6. Once you press enter, a dialog box will pop up. Just follow the instructions to remove Internet Explorer 8. I do believe that all this will involve is pressing the spacebar on a number of next buttons until the removal process is finished. When it is done, it may ask you to re-start your computer, if it does, follow the instructions for re-starting your computer and skip to step 8. 7. After the uninstallation of Internet Explorer 8 is finished, and the program has not asked you to re-start your computer, re--start your computer the conventional way by going to the start menu, arrowing up to the shut down option, and pressing enter. In the resulting dialog box, arrow to the re-start option, and press enter. 8. Once your computer re-starts, you will have to be vigilant with your updates from now on. The next time you go to perform a Windows or Microsoft Update, you will find that one of the updates is Windows Internet Explorer 8. This update should be disabled, and hidden away so that it never shows up until you upgrade your version of Jaws, or you want it to, which ever comes first. If you are doing this from, either the Windows Update website, or the Microsoft Update website, proceed with the following steps. 9. Go back into your start menu, and press the down arrow until you hear Microsoft Update, or Windows Update, and press enter. An Internet explorer window will open up, and you'll be taken to the Microsoft update or Windows Update website, depending on which you pressed enter on above. Wait until the page loads, you may hear a number of clicks in the meantime, which are the various components and active X components initializing, and find the custom button and press the spacebar or enter. 10. Wait until the site finishes it's search for the updates your computer requires, at which point, you should see one update available, now whether this update will be found in the high-priority updates, or the software optional updates I do not know, but where ever it is press enter on that link, at which point, the main section of the page will change. Press insert+escape to refresh the Page buffer so that Jaws sees the new information on the page. This last keystroke is not generally required, but I feel it is better to be safe than sorry later on. 11. Arrow down to the main section of the page, or simply press the letter F to get to the first forms element the page, which should be a checkbox. If that box is checked, press the spacebar to uncheck it, if it is not checked, just do nothing and proceed to the next step. 12. arrow past the title and description, if applicable, of the update, and look for the checkbox just after it. Make sure that checkbox is checked. Jaws may read what that checkbox is for, but if it doesn't, that checkbox is to hide the update and to never show it to you again. If you do not see this
