From the load it sounds like you are busy with work on the dome home. How goes that one? Ready to call a Hawthorne-Q yet? That's how I know it probably needs a new pump. When I put weight on the back with the engine running the back doesn't come up. However if I drive down the road with the load, in a few blocks with the bumps and all the back end will come up from 15 at one mark on the bumper to 17 or within 2 of the normal ride height of 19 for that same point. I guess that's not too bad with about 650 lbs back of the wheels (5 bags of portland). It accelerates faster then the sedan I have does and starts better. The engine sounds real good but the transmission still occasionally slips on the 2-3 shift. I still think it has something to do with the valve body (sticking valve) but I'm not worried enough about it to go in after it. [MBZ] Blower motor on a 140
The blower motor on our 1997 LWB S320 suddenly stopped a few days ago. After all the codes were cleared and the fuse changed [it was bad] the blower still did not work and the 'check engine' light came back on [it had been on for awhile before this, and returned soon after being cleared]. I am given to understand that most often on the 140's it is the blower motor, though we have not gotten down to the motor itself as yet. My question is sort of in anticipation of that being the problem. I notice that I can get the OEM Behr motor from between $885 and somewhere in the $4-600 range, and the alternative Bosch blower is $135. There seem to be at least a few hundred reasons for the alternate blower; any reason to not use the Bosch? While I am out of lurking mode for a moment, my Indy recommended use of the disks that seem to stop so much brake dust from getting on the wheels, but also suggested that I ask the group about them. Anyone familiar? Brake dust is a continual problem on the otherwise nice wheels. Sort of like a pretty woman with spinach between her teeth. Don't we know it. We have that listed out in our costs/benefits. There is also a local power rebate of $800 for switching to solar hot water, and I think a state rebate, but I need to check on that. Re: [MBZ] biodegrading W124 wiring insulation
Max, if you are one of the thousands who are having and up close and personal relationship with the H1N1 virus, you are considered contagious for at least a day, and perhaps two days, after the fever goes away. You might want to check with the company about returning. My wife might have had it, and she went to work and had the manual tossed to her from ten feet away, and was sent back home. If it was the H1N1 it was quite mild with only a very low fever that only lasted a few hours. There are some advantages in not being young and healthy these days. BillR -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Max Dillon Sent: Thursday, October 29, 2009 1:41 PM To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] biodegrading W124 wiring insulation Well, home sick for the third day now, still feverish this a.m., entire household has been stricken, but I'm well enough so I plan to go to work tomorrow as long as the fever goes away today. Daughter was fever-free days ago, so today Mom took her to dance/play group, and I had a few hours to work on my 'new' '95 E300D. Decided to start taking off all the stuff above the injection pump, which the book says needs to be removed in order to replace the IP timer (which was chewed up by the failed vacuum pump). I found that the wires at the connectors for the controller for the intake butterfly-valves are devoid of insulation and clearly shorting out. The CarFax for this car had a repair entry indicating that the engine wiring harness had been replaced, so I was surprised to find this. Need to look at more sections of the wiring harness to see what's going on. This wiring problem would explain some of this car's lack of power. Also found two vacuum lines disconnected, one for the fuel shut-off and not sure what the other is for. Going surprisingly well so far, but I'll have to label/record all the vacuum and electrical connections for the injection pump. Removal of the intake manifold and cross-over pipe were pretty straight forward. I spent about 1.5 hours, taking my time. The dome provides an R value of somewhere around 34-38 depending on how it is calculated. That is over the entire surface. This works out pretty good as the whole thing at 2,500 sq ft will be cooled by a 2.5 ton geothermal unit which will also provide hot water during the cooling season for free. As far as passive cooling considerations, for the short span of time each year when it can be used, it has a cupola on the top, 5 sided with a 2'x8' window in each side. Since they are about 24' off the ground this provides a great place to let hot air out. However the main point in it's favor is the wind resistance. This is a lot lower than any other type of house from all sides with the possible exception of a totally earth covered construction (cave). Unfortunately since I live in Florida I didn't want to get into the possible problems with leaks by being below ground even though there are products that will probably do a lot better now then there were even 10 or so years ago. Then there is also the consideration that I wanted at least some kind of view and in flat land there is no substitute for height, so dome. Re: [MBZ] transmission options....
And we are still awaiting the Dome warming party. BillR -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of MG Sent: Friday, October 23, 2009 9:34 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] transmission options Larry, The way it was explained to me once was; The stall speed is the point at which the engine can't turn any faster when the accelerator is pushed all the way down while the car is standing still brakes on and the transmission is in drive. This is due to the sheer strength of the oil and the space between the fins and number of fins etc. in the fluid coupling which is what the torque converter is. The reason the engine can't turn any faster is because at any RPM there is only so much horse power and torque that that particular engine can produce. This goes up as the engine speed increases till it hits a plateau dependent on the cam, intake, fuel, valve size, compression and on and on. Lots of different variables there. Then usually it goes back down to some extent at a much higher RPM. When the produced power equals the amount of drag produced by the torque converter and what it is connected to obviously the engine won't turn any faster. In normal use of course the car starts moving usually before the stall speed is reached and as it moves the input into the transmission starts turning so the RPM of the engine can go up by the same amount. As the RPM of the engine goes up it is able to produce more power so the car accelerates faster and so on. So the reason for a higher stall speed is that in situations where you want to start accelerating faster or start a bigger load from a stop that requires putting more power to the wheels. Since the engine makes more power at a higher RPM you can either go to a lower gear ratio or allow the engine to get to a higher RPM where it will produce more power. This is the basis of the so called torque multiplying. Nothing is really multiplied it is just that the engine is allowed to produce more usable power at any road speed if called upon, compared to an engine that is directly coupled through a clutch. Bad part is that a higher stall speed is produced by reducing the fluid coupling of the torque converter. This causes more slip at a steady speed or actually at any power point. That in turn effects your fuel mileage unless there is a lockup clutch in the torque converter which gets applied usually in the highest gear to eliminate that slip and recover that loss of mileage. Anyway that's what I was told and I'm sticking to my story. I got to go out and do some work now or get killed. I think you might be on the right track about the dimmer, and I think several list members recommend just wiring around it as the dash lights are dim enough to not blind you. When I had some of the other issues you describe it turned out to be a good fuse [tested by multi-meter] whose contact with the fuse holder had mostly corroded over the years. It got a small amount of current through it, but not enough to do the job. A replacement fuse - and not the one I was expecting it to be - cured it. Now I have a driver side headlight that will not come on unless I first turn the fog lights on. I can then turn the fog lights off and the headlight will work as needed for the rest of the day. I had done it successfully when I finished the restoration on my Willys. So I did it on the 200D as well - it didn't go quite as smoothly as with the Willys and I was a little sceptical as to whether I had it back together properly. My apologies to the international folks getting this, but you might have similar situations where you are. While not quite that bad [and not dangerous], we bought a house that had been the model home for the neighborhood. They planned on bringing in power to the garage from the SE front, but the utilities would not run power when they needed it so they brought it in from the development behind us at the NE corner. We had a fuse box in our dining room. We also had a wall hanging just a bit larger than it was in our dining room. Yes, they do need new ways to make [steal] money, I guess. I use a credit union with no fees, but we only have a debit card. I've got a CC waiting with a hefty limit, but it is not activated [I've got a few months before they cancel it again for non-use]. https://www.experian.com/consumer/cac/InvalidateSession.do?code=SECURITYALER T should get you to the page, then you have to either use the automated system on the phone, or send something in writing, IIRC. Experian will contact TransUnion and whatever the other one is. The reason that helps is that it adds an extra level of proof if you apply for credit. You should be able to do that for yourself [prove you are you, except on a weekend, so don't try to buy anything on new credit when the reporting agencies are closed], but it should stop a fake application. Re: [MBZ] Fraudulent Credit Card
I had forgotten about overseas use of American cards. They probably check more closely now [better electronic connections] , but when I was in Cuba the first time [yes, I was legal] I didn't take any credit cards because I didn't figure they would be good. I could have used them anywhere. The next trip [also legal] I left my cash at home and took the cards. What I didn't know is that in the intervening months our government had cut off payments on American credit cards used in Cuba. Let us just say that was a much more frugal trip [I was fully hosted, so not really a problem], not that there was much to spend it on anyhow. I didn't really need any more souvenirs anyway, but I did miss out a large book of old American stamps [all pre Castro] that I could have gotten at a flea market for $150 [a few months wages for most Cubans at that time]. One of my friends found one stamp in the very large album that was worth $300 by itself, with hundreds of others. Oh, well. I always use Delvac 1 and change it about 10,000, though my mechanic says 15,000 should be ok. I just don't like going that long. It is quite possible that the 'o' rings are old, though. Re: [MBZ] ticketable
Now, I always wear a seat belt anyway, and I think it's a good idea to do so, but I don't think the government has any business forcing me to do so, since my choice in this matter affects only me. I assume that if you are seriously injured you have adequate insurance with a multi-million dollar lifetime maximum? Alternately you could keep some sort of cyanide capsule in your mouth so you can kill yourself if you think you will be so injured. Otherwise you are planning on the rest of us paying for your lifetime care if you have a bad accident that costs more than you can supply through insurance or your family's net worth. The three young men I saw in an ICU some years ago all had broken necks [to quads and a para] 0hey were not planning on having, and if they are still alive they are but a drop in the bucket of what you have been helping to pay for all these years. Actually, the government does not force you to wear a seatbelt. I don't have one on now as I sit in my office [in a really twisty chair]. Were I to drive on a public road I would, though, and I am glad you do also. If you are actively seeking legislation to allow troopers to shoot on scene anyone badly injured who doesn't have health or accident insurance, maybe I could support your position. I have spent many hours in ER rooms as well with the families of such people. No, I do not agree that it affects only you. You should not be forced to wear a seatbelt, unless you drive on a public road. My opinion, anyway. Also you will see the aircraft flow of traffic leaving the North American continent and travelling at night to arrive in the UK in the morning. Then you will see the flow changing, leaving the UK in the morning and flying to the American continent in daylight. It is a 24 hour observation of all of the large aircraft flights in the world, condensed down to about 2 minutes. From space we look like a bee hive of activity. You could tell it was summer time in the north by the suns foot print over the planet. You could see that it didn't quite set in the extreme north and it didn't quite rise in the extreme south. I have never seen this before. We are taught about the earths tilt and how it causes summer and winter and have had to imagine just what is going on. Re: [MBZ] More Re; colleges
If we are suggesting good small colleges, I'd suggest checking out Lynchburg College in Lynchburg VA. Very good facilities, very good faculty [at least when I was there]. Because it is in the frozen Northland [which they would hotly dispute] they have indoor as well as outdoor sports facilities. The control panel for the first nuclear powered ship was designed on campus: good science school. My ex-roomie got good prep to become a veterinarian, and no complaints about my liberal arts education there either. I was about as ready for grad school as I could be. Re: [MBZ] Diesel Tika-Marsala coming soon... Tata
I got to tour the main Tata steel plant and truck factory back in the late 1980's. I was there more for observing their work with local villages [they had adopted 125 of them, teaching skills then buying products from them], so the factory tours were a bit cursory, but it was interesting to see some of the differences in regulations. The truck frames/drive trains were made in Jamshedpur, and the body and interior was attached in what was then Bombay. The driver would pull out of the factory, make a lap around the track, then take off for Bombay [hundreds of miles away - think @ 200 miles West of Calcutta to Mumbai] sitting on a wooden bench with no windshield. Jamshedpur was the ultimate company town, with the electric supply, schools, hospitals, streets and everything else being part of the company. Greater Jamshedpur was about 600,000 people, with a great many living outside the well maintained city proper in surrounding slums. Tata was a well run company, at least back then. Re: [MBZ] Oil change cost
My nephew is shop manager and part owner of a foreign car repair shop. He says his cost for a standard oil change is @$45.00. The $18 oil change special at the local quick lube shop sure isn't how they make their money. That transmission fluid is really dirty/burnt. See the color .. you really need to change the transmission fluid and give it a flush. I was on a multi-day trip and had one of those turkeys tell me that, and remind me that I have to do that every 18,000 miles. I asked him to look at the 8,000 miles on the odometer of my fairly new car. He just said Oh.. and backed away from the car. No more offers the one and only time I ever went there. I know this has happened to others, but what a pain. My dash gauges all went dead [oil, fuel, tach, speedo, odo, plus blinkers and brakes]. A block or so from the studio, we found a parking space parallel to the curb and the very first space in a LONG straight line for several blocks as far as we could see. It was about 3:30 PM, and in a effort to determine if we were safe parking there, we stood for several minutes at the curb beside the car trying to decipher all the 6 to 8 signs on a pole beside the car. Each time running through the signs denoting valid parking times and other rules, we thought we were starting with the top sign and going down all the possibilities on them. Each time, after reading through all of them, we asked each other aloud, So, is parking here now OK? Again, as far as we could see up the street in front of my black SDL cars were parked at the curb. Thanks Jim. It can get to the whiney point, then to the half blink point. I don't recall it being faster though, and worked fine while the blinker was on. Now everything [but the clock] that needs an electric feed is dead. I tried swapping around the relays that had the same number, but that made no difference. I'm thinking a bad ground that finally went from intermittent and partial to total. I'm well past my activity limit for today, even though it is relatively cool at only 87. I'll try some of it on Monday with a tester. IIRC, the flasher is left and up from the brake pedal, suspended right at the back of the knee panel. I found this out when I hooked up an auxiliary clacker relay in the SL, but did it 'wrong'. In normal operation it flashes when it sees a full load on it, and waits quietly until it does see such a load. Remember that it's calibrated to flash faster under a too-light load, as a lamp-out warning. Taken to extremes apparently it can get to the buzz/whine point. Pull the flasher and measure the resistance from the output socket pin to ground, there should be infinite resistance unless a turn signal or hazard switch is engaged. I'm guessing it's a leaky/dirty hazard switch that's letting some current, at a non-illuminating level, travel through it. Thank you Barry. I gave them a quick look earlier, but I will pay special attention to 12. If I show continuity from the top to the bottom of the fuse holder I would assume the fuse is good? Have you replaced that fuse? If that doesn't help remove the cluster and probe socket #7 of the round connector for 12V. The key needs to be in the run or start position for F12 to get power. The ground for the cluster is at G102 which is one of the many brown wires tied to the instrument panel(lower center of the cluster cutout) you see when you remove the cluster. You might test the cluster ground. For the portion of the cluster fed by F12 it should be at socket 3 of the same round connector. It should read very low ohms to the G102 or any good ground point. Not sure if someone has already suggested this as I have been behind the power curve for the last little while on my E-mails. If you get continuity it is a good sign and probably means it is ok but you can get continuity across a hair fine wire but it won't carry any current. If you must keep the fuse take it out and make sure the conductor isn't cracked and clean off some of the oxidation. The best test is to measure voltage at the connector. FWIW, on my '81 SL I did once have what another lister mentioned, that being a crack in the printed circuit board on the back of the cluster. It was very hard to see. You had to probe each circuit with an ohmmeter and look for the large ohmic reading. It was easily repaired by soldering a small length of wire across the crack to bridge it. Barry Thank you Barry. [MBZ] Dash console dead - 1981 300SD
I did it to myself, though I am not exactly sure of the part I screwed up. For the past three years I have had an intermittent buzz [like a single strand of a wire shorting out at times] on the blinker. It would be good while flashing, but hum/buzz at times, and it's extreme was to make a continuous partial blink on the left blinker. Replacing the flasher did nothing, and it did the same right after and the rest of the day, then it stopped it for about 6 weeks. Messing with any of the wiring did nothing immediate, though as with messing with the flasher, the next day it would stop for 6 - 8 weeks. My nephew noticed one of the modules in the fuse box showed a bit of black on the pins, so I cleaned all of them. Same result, only it stopped it immediately. When it came back I cleaned all of the module pins with electric contact cleaner and put a bit of electric contact paste on the pins [$.99 sample size by the register at local FLAPS]. This time the console when dead. I cleaned the stuff off and the console and blinker worked for a few moments, but now has not worked for a week. Any thoughts or suggestions? BTW - I thought it time to do a diesel purge, and was impressed at that engine. It did almost no smoke, though it did stop most all the shaking. I was breaking an air cleaner mount about ever two months before I did it. Thanks - BillR -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] Public Service Announcement - 126 seat switch needed
On a slightly different point, what you mention about the staffer giving his viewpoint priority points to the major problem with term limits. The elected positions of congress are pretty much overwhelming in terms of needing to know everything about everything coming before the legislature, so they have to rely on staffers until they are well versed in a given subject. The longer a person stays, in theory they will actually get to know an increasing number of areas reasonably well. A mandatory turnover of elected officials elevates the non-elected staff to being the only ones who are the experts on nearly every issue, so they end up being responsible for even more legislation than they are responsible for now [don't they write just about all of it?], and with fewer checks to their power. I don't think term limits are a bad idea, even with that. I also think most professors need to spend at least one of every five years in the real world doing the thing they teach. I have many such fantasies. Another fantasy [?] is that someone out there has a replacement passenger seat control switch to replace the one I destroyed a couple of weeks ago. The dual position switch with headrest adjustment was the one we had so my son wired it in to control the non-memory seat on my '81 300SD. With that much custom wiring having been done I think it would be best to replace it with the same one we rigged to work before. Kaleb? Anybody? I have a baggie full of small springs and pivots and such - all I could find of the exploding switch I had in there. I'll second the feeling about the 140's road worthiness. We just took our 1997 S320 to Atlanta and back - probably 1,000 total for the week. This one you look forward to driving. The Parktronic is helpful for getting it where you want it [my darling wife likes to back into spaces], the moisture sensing wipers work great, etc. We love that car, though I suspect it is a bit underpowered with that 6 were we to do any mountain driving. Now I have my fingers crossed that the extra $ we paid because it was sold and serviced at the dealer we bought it from will pay off. I know I don't want to do any serious repairs on that one. Re: [MBZ] S320 LWB - ?? for Kaleb
I have no idea, but the guy at the dealership said that hydraulic pump for that door was bad, and repairs were @ $1,500, if it was a simple repair. We knew that one didn't work when we bought the car, but even though the doors are heavy, they close easily and FL is pretty flat. The other closers seldom get a chance to activate as a pretty gentle push will close them pretty well. My 92 YO 105# MiL has tried a few times to get the closer to activate on her side and always closes the door fully herself. I am the one who doesn't quite close the driver's door. I suppose I'd just like the car to have everything work, and it is annoying that it doesn't, even though my darling wife doesn't seem to care. Guess I need to do some additional checking on that item. If it is just an actuator it wouldn't be much of a problem. Re: [MBZ] S320 LWB - ?? for Kaleb
No, we didn't pay $17k for it, and we knew the door closer didn't work on that door when we bought it. It does have perfect paint and interior, everything but that automatic closer works, and we have dealer service records from when it was purchased at the dealer. I did find that car for a lot less than we paid, but not looking or driving like this one does. I know that we might discover it was a mistake [an occasional nightmare, even], but I've got more invested in a 'cheap' 300SD that we have had to fix lots of stuff on than this very nice one. I'm taking the gamble that a properly cared for vehicle like this will hold up well. If the actuators are the same on front and rear, have you got a good used one from a LR door? Re: [MBZ] S320 LWB - ?? for Kaleb
Thanks for the info Tom. I've been tied up with my writing project and am a few hundred emails behind once more. I'm figuring out a few things on the S320, though I don't get a lot of opportunity to drive it. I'm just glad my lead footed darling wife doesn't do distance driving anymore [she covered Gainesville to Naples some years ago when she was doing medical case management]. She has already commented that it seems to hit 80 with no encouragement, and when she starts wondering why everyone else on the road is going so slowly she has learned to check the speedometer. I'm sure 140 would be next if she were on the freeway. The activated carbon filter seems to be working ok as I only caught a sniff of smoke once, and I doubt she has stopped just to honor the car. It is a great ride though, and the first car that I would rather drive than my '81 300SD. Each time it has been in for some issue the dealer has filled the tank, also. WE have yet to put any fuel in it, and I suspect they fill it up in hopes that we will not be near them when we first have to do so. We might come back and pound on one of them. I'm not looking for this to save any fuel costs over her I30. That one was bad enough at near 20 MPG, and used regular. I had them check on the hydraulic pump on the driver's door, and that one seems to be dead. I wonder if the pump is the same for all four doors as a replacement might be available from a donor car somewhere. The other three and the trunk all work fine. She says she has noticed that people seem to give her a bit of space when she approaches intersections in this one vs. the I30. KALEB - do you have a good hydraulic pump from a rear door that will fit this thing? At the moment my darling wife is out giving the charcoal filter a test run. Though I have never seen her smoke, she has done so since she was a kid. The air filter is automatic in case of too much CO or some other toxin is present, though for her it will be to help with second hand smoke. Personally I wonder how effective it might be with self generated toxic air. We are taking it to Atlanta next month and often stop at a BBQ on the way, so I might find out. There are three cabin filters on a W140. The recirc filter is in the passenger footwell; the main filter is under the hood on top of the blower motor; and the pollen filter behind the evaporator, which is a huge PIA, costs $400, and is probably original and doesn't really work like it is supposed to at this point. None of them are automatic, you have to push a button to turn on the super filter. You should check and replace the two normal filters; dealer service is code for we pretend these don't exist. I did notice one of the hydraulic door closers was not working all the time [drivers door], but that is not something I think of as a necessity. Easiest fix in the world, as John said. You'll miss it when you have to slam those heavy doors closed all the time. The 'clean hand' extending trunk closer handle is also a new one on me. Seems they have come up with a few tricks since my 1981 was built. My favorite of the new tricks (other than the multilink rear suspension and some semblance of rust protection) is the climate control diagnostics. Start it up and hold the rest button for five or so seconds, and cycle through the options with the auto buttons. You'll figure a few of them out, but I can dig up the whole list if you like. Re: [MBZ] one reason it's bad to have a girl - good books on math
There are a couple of books out for young teen girls to jump start math. Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math. I don't' recall the author at this point and I'm too lazy to walk across the house to look, but the title should find them for you. The author had much of them published in Teen magazine. My wife says they are great, and 10 year old granddaughter seem to like them. Lots of 'silly' quizzes and 'practical' applications that appeal to young teens. Worth a look. You might have heard the interview on NPR a week or so ago. Her current project is a similar book on Algebra. Despite being #2 in her HS class, and got an A in honors math, she, to this day (she's 32), believes that she's bad at math, and shy's away from it. Her sister, who was never told that crap, was about the same in school, but does believe that she can do math, and she can. You are right, the math is the minor part of that problem - it's more logic. On Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 10:57 PM, Gary Hurst jabbahur...@gmail.com wrote: My kid comes to me with the following problem and says she doesn't know how to do that math. ten years ago A was three times as old as C this year A is 50 years older than C. how old is A i go to explain to her that this isn't as much a math mystery as it is a problem of defining terms and applying logic. The problem asks us to solve for: the current age of A there are two statements, the subject of which are: 1. the ages of A and C ten years ago 2. the ages of A and C today the problem with solving this question is that people who look at it as a math problem might only see two variables, A and C. there are, however, 4 variables: A(age 10 years ago) or Asub10 C (age 10 years ago) or Csub10 A(age today) or let's just call this A C (age today) or let's just call this C The two statements are saying the following: Asub10=3*Csub10 A-50=C however, as we know by definition the relationship between these variables and can therefore reduce them to two. A-10=Asub10 C-10=Csub10 so the first statement can be expressed A-10=3(C-10) therefore: A-10=3C-30 therefore: A=3C-20 and We also know that: A-50=C therefore: A=C+50 Now we have defined A in terms of two statement about C, that A is both: C+50 and 3C-20 since both of those are the same as A and A is the same as A it follows that C+50=3C-20 therefore 50=2C-20 therefore 2C=70 So we know that C is 35 based the statement A-50=C then A-50=35 which means A=85 if we plug it into our other statement, we can check that A=85 if and only if C=35, so we can be confident that A=85 My kid looks at me like I'm mad and says ok, so you are sure that A is 85 years old, right. i explain that it seems to be a logical certainty and she should see that from the demonstration. to which she replies well, ok, if you are sure, then i'll use that I somehow think a boy might have done better with this -- OK Don Pair of W124 300D 2.5 Turbos -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] S320 LWB
Thanks Wilton, Dave and Ed. Let's just say we own much of it. Decided to finance part of it rather than strip down savings that much. BillR -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of E M Sent: Saturday, June 13, 2009 8:07 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] S320 LWB Congrats on the new car, I'm sure if will serve you and your wife well for years to come. They are really great cars, and I'm sure you're both proud, as you should be, to own it. Happy motoring!! Ed 300E 2009/6/13 Bill R billr32...@comcast.net I'm still in a state of shock that we paid so much for a 1997, but it is one Sue fell in love with at first sight and drive. The variable quick response steering was a surprise, and the tight turning radius. It is safe, and something she can be proud of driving. Her Infinity was showing it's age. It is the S320, and has the LWB option. Lots of room in that back seat. It was not the one with the 20 rims, that one was older with lower mileage and a LOT cheaper. It also had a lot of things starting to go funky on it which suggested to me that it had not been cared for all of its life as this one has. This was dealer maintained all the way, and has factory everything. I have not completely figured out what everything is as yet, but the Parktronic is interesting. The only bad thing about it in my opinion is that it is black with dark leather interior. Fortunately she has a parking garage at work so it won't be in the sun all day. I'm still loving my 1981 300SD, but I sure would prefer her radio with CD changer and cassette, and even a weather band button. I did notice one of the hydraulic door closers was not working all the time [drivers door], but that is not something I think of as a necessity. The 'clean hand' extending trunk closer handle is also a new one on me. Seems they have come up with a few tricks since my 1981 was built. [MBZ] S320, part two
First, apologies to any who responded and I didn't see it. I had cataract surgery on my other eye on Wed, and have not been able to read computer screens since, at least not normal size ones. I can copy and paste and enlarge, if I could tell it was something I needed to do that with, out of the couple of hundred I get a day. I looked at the 1994 S320 today. 140k miles and really in pretty good shape inside and out - except for the rather gaudy new 20 rims and tires. A few somewhat minor [could I do the repairs] items. Nice dash and wood [for the most part]. He is asking $5,500 with a rebuilt transmission. Runs well. For a few hundred bucks it would be a pretty nice car. It is a gamble I am not sure I want to take. The dealer has a 1997 S320 with 152K miles. They have it on the used car showroom floor. It would take a mechanic to tell it from a new car in most respects. The only way I could was a few dings on the edge of the driver's door. They sold and serviced it, but also want $17k for theirs. We don't want to spend that much $. We are going to look at a Compass this weekend, and we will go back together to look at the S320. If my darling wife likes it that might be what we get. It will have to pass a professional inspection first, though.. Eyes are much better today now that the physician induced paralysis is gone, but not good yet. [MBZ] 1994 S320
After the Compass / CVR / Rav4 /Subaru looking one of the folks my wife works with just listed a 1994 S320 for $5,500, but 'will make me a good deal on it'. It is a third car and is not being driven. From the total mileage it has been driven less than 10k per year over its life. He had the transmission redone last year - and [unfortunately] put on new 20 tires and custom rims. He says the paint and interior are perfect and everything works. He also claims to be able to get as high as 28 MPG highway with an easy foot on the pedal, but does say when you put your foot in it, it does not get good mileage. I suspect the rims will probably turn us off, but if the rest of the car is not too scary we might pay to have an evaluation done. I can't recall if this is one of the ones with wiring harness problems, and I know that this model has a history of evaporator problems and I think oil leaks from the head. What other thoughts about the good and bad do you have about this car? Thanks - BillR -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
