Re: [MBZ] my first a/c RR
I don't know if the compressor took a dump or if the clutch went bad or what. I thought I needed to check the RPM sensor, and tried to pull it out and ruined it in the process. So I just ordered a rebuilt compressor from Rusty... Luther Peter Frederick wrote: If the old compressor died and left any crud in the system (looks like aluminum paint, usually) or gray residue, you need to install a filter in the suction line to the compressor, This will catch all the crud you don't get out (and there will be plenty in there no matter how much you flush, these are all parallel flow systems and you cannot positively flush either condenser or evaporator) and prevent instant damage to the new compressor. The other alternative, of course, is to replace all hoses, dryer, and both condenser and evaporator with new ones. Fat chance Peter On Aug 13, 2008, at 8:07 PM, Luther wrote: The compressor is from Rusty, complete with the RPM sensor and harness. Flushing is easy. Buy a flush kit which consists of a 1qt aluminum pressure canister, hose, and spray gun. Fill the canister with a/c flush solvent, hook up shop air to the canister, and spray the flush through the system. Then remove the canister and blow DRY shop air (nitrogen is preferred) through the system. Then Evac the system to 30hg for at least 1 hour. I did see some black and neon green (dye color) crap flowing from both my condenser and evaporator. Hopefully this will help the compressor last longer and run more efficiently. Luther Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: So did you buy a compressor off Rusty? How did you go about flushing? Luther wrote: Working on the SDL here... The compressor is out and the condenser evaporator are flushed. So I begin to put things back together and look for o-rings associated with the drier. None are found. Ugh, it's times like this that I dislike driving a German autowhen I have to wait a day or more because the local parts house does not stock this size of XX (insert favorite part here, o-ring for now). Grrr. Rusty, are the driers suppose to have new o-rings just like the compressors? Ummnh sorry, not funny. Guess it is so stupid, you can laugh at the stupidity of it but it is not funny in itself. Perhaps someone could point out what exactly is the funny part? Furthermore this has been around since forever in one shape or another and to simply change a few words does not make it funny? I think that's a suboptimal filter location. Putting the filter in the high pressure line allows any crap that's in the evaporator to go straight to the compressor. If the purpose is to protect the compressor, put the filter as close to the compressor inlet as possible. There are both kinds of filters. Consider the ubiquitous engine oil filter: the bulk of the filtration is on oil being dumped back into the pan! My understanding is that the circulating crap's only mildly abrasive, and so long as you pick it up 'soon' it's just fine to get it on the high side. One minor advantage of high-side pickup is that since the crap started with the compressor in the first place it tends to keep it out of the rest of the system, especially the expansion valve. I just didn't have much luck finding one that would fit into the 190D, so I didn't end up using one at all. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Autotrader (cox) has nothing to do with ebay, they are somewhat our competition. Read the writing on the wall. The CEO of eBay has made it clear he is moving away from the 'flea market' model that built the brand. He wants to push it upscale, into more of a storefront. One of my wife's colleagues was from Argentina or somewhere, when he and his family came to Houston the first month or so they made a weekend trip to South Fork, and was so excited to be able to do that. [MBZ] 560 SL battery drain
Yesterday I finally got a chance to tackle the battery discharge problem in Jill's 560 SL. I'd already convinced myself it wasn't an alternator charging prohblem. (I've been putting the car on charge most nights for months now.) I suspected one of the two alarms, or the stereo to be at fault. (Though it could be almost anything, including the clock, radio antenna, or dome light system.) I pulled apart the main power supply terminal under the hood and determined that there was no parasitic load except through the main feed wires to the fuse box. When I disconnected the keyless entry/alarm system and powered up the car it drew some 200 mA once things settled down. That's fairly hefty, over time. When I dug up the fob so I could reconnect the keyless entry/alarm and shut it up I found that it only seems to draw 10-20 mA itself: not so bad. Removing the faceplate of the stereo did nothing to change the draw. I removed the floor panel, but the factory alarm wasn't under there so I couldn't disconnect it. I mis-remembered, it's behind the glove box according to the ETM. (The lamp-out warning module is what's under the floor panel.) I ran out of time to continue chasing that morning, however. Jill also reports that the headlights spontaneously go out sometimes. That's not good, and it keeps her from wanting to drive the car. Combination switch? I've seen that before, though usually only when applying a turn signal. Today I proved it's not the stereo (removed), or the antenna (unplugged). But it's on Fuse 12. If the schematic can be believed that indicates the antenna, trunk light, alarm system, warning module, courtesy lamps, diagnostic socket, hazard signals, or clock. I disconnected the alarm, that's not it. I pulled the dome light timer relay, that's not it either. I checked the visor lights, it doesn't seem to be them. (Current draw when either was opened was the same, 950 mA, and together it was about 1600 mA. That indicates that neither switch was leaking.) I pulled the door switches, no change. It's not the warning module. (Getting to that was fun.) It's not the hazard switch. All that's left is the clock, which is difficult to get to. So I pulled the airbag, steering wheel, and instrument cluster. It's not the clock! WTF? Supposedly I've gone through everything on Fuse 12, yet I've found no culprits. The car still draws 200-350 mA through the fuse. Damn, either somebody added something (cell phone?) or the schematic's wrong, or there's a pinched wire. The next step is to pull the fuse box itself and check the individual wires feeding off of it. That's a drag. So I pulled the fuse block. There are two ring terminals screwed to #12: one a clump of small reds with a red/yellow in it, and another clump of small reds with a red/white in it. The culprit is in the red/white clump, though I ran out of time to chase it further than that. The red/white wire itself goes to the diagnostic socket, and nothing's plugged into it. The car looks a right mess.

Hi, All. My Puzzle for today is:- What in the front suspension is mainly responsible for ride height? My money is on the springs. That said, I seem to remember Herr Doktor Proffessor Booth saying that MBZ springs don't sag. Ride height as measured from wheel center vertically to wheel arch. All of the rubber bits seem to be equally OK except for the strut mounts which are showing some cracks (both cars) Front sway bar mounts are the same on both. I still think that the springs are tired. Another question. In Rusty's (All Hail Rusty!) list of parts for front springs, there is a caveat that some scoreor other must be observed. Huh? It's when you shoot the messenger instead of the message, literally to the man. You will notice a lot of this in political discourse when someone on one side (the hearer) disagrees with something one on another side said (the sayer), and starts trashing the sayer as a person, rather than presenting any sort of logical or rational argument against what was said. This usually happens when either 1) what was said was correct and disagreed with strongly-held views and opinions of the hearer, or 2) the hearer is stupid and can't argue rationally or logically, or 3) all of the above. I won't go into my opinions and anecdotal observations on who is more ad hominem in their responses to things said. --R [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ...Moronic, stupid, unfunny, ad hominen attack The only other person I've ever seen use the term ad hominem is VanCleef. Ok, here we go. JR started out with a 116 450SEL. Then he got a 126, it was sometimes seen as a 380SEL, 500SEL, I have even seen 300SD, all the same color. I believe it was the 126 that got wrecked, but in the wreck scene, it was clearly a 116 that was wrecked. He did get rid of the 126 and got an Alante. In the movies later, I know he had a 140. Sue Ellen started out with the Ford station wagon, then she got the 123 TD for a season I think. Then, the SEC. Bobby, started off with a 450SL, then a 380SL, and a 560SL. Think he got a porshe or something like that later on. One of Sue Ellens boy friends had a black 560SL, which was later in the series. A large classifieds mob http://www.tradingpost.com.au/Home is talking about getting into the online auction business over here. Have to see how that pans out. However ebays attempt to force people to only use paypal and COD has failed over here. Guess the consumer watchdog gave them a stern talking to. Anyway perhaps there are ways of getting around their squeeze on prices, perhaps listing a car as being parts, along the lines of selling a whole car as parts. I could understand if they have a listing fee and then take a percentage of the final sale price, which would be fairer than a set price. Yes but if they keep alienating their customers, particularly their core customers, then you breed discontent and people will make the effort to switch. Sort of like MS, I put up with their stuff for years and one day had enough and put a penguin in the box. Or MB and their quality issues, which they are trying to address. As a side note the TV ad for the new C class goes on about how much time and effort they put into testing the 203 and at the end they ask the question why did we put so much effort into the new C class? and the answer they gave was because we are Mercedes-Benz and this is the C class. When I saw it I had to have a bit of a chuckle to myself and thought to myself that that was the wrong answer.
