Re: [QUAD-L] BP

2016-10-15 Thread Quadius
I forgot to mention today was a terrible day. Suffered from a bout of A.D.
which had my BP at 172/99 only to see that dropped to 60/38 about an hour
later when I got up into the wheelchair. It did bounce back, only to drop
once again after I ate.

Suffering from A.D. and orthostatic hypotension is a monster. :-)

Re: [QUAD-L] BP

2016-10-15 Thread Quadius
Yes Bobbie I have been lower, but I take my blood pressure pretty regularly
and it gets quite often. I, however, take midodrine as well as drink
Mountain Dew in order to try to keep it from dipping too low anymore. I try
to keep mine at around 80/50 or above, but sometimes when I sit up after
eating or when I first get up, it will dip into the 50s over the 30s.

If you were that low and didn't feel the effects, that could mean that your
running pretty low most of the time.

I was admitted to the hospital a couple of different times and it wasn't
until I saw that I hadn't urinated more than 5 mL in four hours that I
realize how dangerous the low blood pressure can be. They explained to me
that your organs shut down when the blood pressure gets too low and it can
cause lasting effects if this happens too often or too much. I ended up
spending two weeks in the hospital a couple of years ago to see if they
could determine why my blood pressure fluctuates between extremely high and
exceedingly low. The specialist decided they would rather it be slightly
high than too low. Therefore I take quite a bit of midodrine often on.

Re: [QUAD-L] Blood pressure

2016-10-15 Thread Quadius
Greg,
There is no doubt in my mind that you have a similar problem. They tell me
it's orthostatic hypotension. It can come from eating as well as standing
or sitting up too quickly.

When they have trouble getting your blood pressure, try tilting back as far
as you can. I have to tilt back when I eat, because my blood pressure drops
too drastically. That is why I end up taking midodrine every time I eat
when I haven't consumed food in four or five hours.

I usually take my blood pressure just prior to eating in order to determine
whether one-half midodrine will do the trick.

Quadius
PS take this seriously. I was put in the hospital twice for low blood
pressure in the cardiologist and renal doctors were adamant that I needed
to keep my blood pressure higher than 80/50. Even if I went a little too by
for a while. They would prefer my blood pressure to be higher rather than
lower.
I have seen mine dipped down to the mid-50s over 30 something. That's not
healthy.

2016-10-14 Thread Quadius
I have problems with this occasionally, especially after I eat or first get
seated in the chair. It's definitely not good to have this low. It's hard
on your heart and your kidneys, not to mention all of the other internal
organs.

Just FYI, if you can't get a reading sitting up, try tilting back as far as
you can in the wheelchair or in bed and see if you get one. If it's low,
then you might need to talk to a physician about whether it's beneficial to
take medication to raise it. They have me taking medication part of the
day, but when I get into bed I have pain issues which elevates my blood
pressure. So it's a bit of a seesaw as well as a balancing act.

Re: [QUAD-L] Back on the list/ pills

2016-10-11 Thread Quadius
I don't want to jinx myself, but I guess I am luckier than most. I have
pain in my bladder and shoulder. The shoulder pain is a muscular pain
which can radiate into my neck. If it gets bad enough I have to take
Tylenol three, but I try not to. Knock on wood, I try to take as few of
these as possible. Usually below eight or nine or year.

There are times when I have to take something for the bladder pain, but
right now I don't have anything prescribed. You can buy it
over-the-counter, but I'm trying not to take too much of that because it
can be really hard on the liver. I usually only take medication for
bladder pain when it is elevated blood pressure.

Like everyone else I'm praying that you have a really good outcome and for
the best.
When you say you haven't ilio conduit, do you mean you have a stoma or is
yours go through your bellybutton?

I honestly just know enough to be dangerous :-)

I have what I referred to as a urostomy, but basically I have a stoma which
is attached to my bladder via 9 inches of intestines. While mine is still
working and is much better than it used to be, I still suffer quite a bit
of pain, but my bouts with A.D. have diminished significantly.

Sorry I really can't be a big help, but I do hope you get everything you

[QUAD-L] echo

2016-09-02 Thread Quadius
I made a discovery today. I decided to pair my iPad to my Amazon Echo and
it worked well. The interesting part was when I started playing a book from
my Talking Books app and simply asked Alexa to pause or stop, not only did
it pause in the room where I was at, but it stopped and started the app on
the iPad.

This a significant for me because it allows me to have a little bit of
control over the playback of the talking books. With the current digital
player I don't any control, but I so enjoy the ability to download books
directly from the Internet. It also has a really good rewind and fast
forward function. The iPad app doesn't have as good a navigational
function, but all in all I like it.

Just thought I would share.

[QUAD-L] echo

2016-08-21 Thread Quadius
I am presently using X 10 to operate lights and fans, but I would like to
switch to a newer system because X 10 is becoming more and more difficult
to acquire and it isn't that effective any longer.

I purchased an Amazon Echo, but I'd like to get a hub which can work with
different devices in order to open locks, operate door openers if possible,
turn on lights and fans. I would eventually like to switch over to
something I can operate with my cell phone, but right now my phone doesn't
work well with Google Now. So I am currently using Dragon Mobile Assistant
to make all of my phone calls and text messages, but this doesn't really
give me full access to my mobile phone.

I would generally just like some feedback on what's good, price effective
and actually works well. It would be a plus if it's not too difficult to
set up.

I'm thinking about purchasing the device which allows me to operate TV and
things like that with echo, but I'm wondering if you have to have one for
each area your operating. I also don't like the fact that you have to tell
echo to turn on something through whatever the name of the device is. I
presently just have to activate my ECU, then give the TV command and say
turn on and then I can do a multitude of things from there.

Hopefully this isn't too confusing.

So basically I just like to know what you're using with your echo and what
you recommend. I would really rather not reinvent the wheel, if you know
what I mean.

If I have an android on my chair and I currently use Dragon mobile I am
wondering if I could use this to interface with Echo and Blumoo.
Honestly it looks more efficient than the really expensive environmental
control unit the VA had the test for the last couple of years.

I'm still using an older ECU which I've had for 10 years. At least this
version of it and I still like it, but it uses X 10. I'm thinking about the
future and this looks like it could be an extremely viable option.

Thanks for the info.

Re: [QUAD-L] Blood Pressure up and down,

2016-06-06 Thread Quadius
try giving us an example of what kind of high is when you're in bed. Also
give us a example of what it's like in your chair. If you would like I can
go into great deal and to mine, because I probably take my blood pressure
anywhere from 5 to 10 times a day depending on how much trouble I'm having.
I do have high blood pressure in bed often, but a lot of times it's related
to bowels or bladder, but occasionally were not sure. I also have a kidney
stone which might be causing it to remain elevated when I am in bed.

My blood pressure drop significantly whenever I eat, especially when the
blood pressure is not too elevated. I'll give you examples, but let's wait
and see what blood pressure you're talking about first.

I was advised to have a current list of medications on my refrigerator and
have it labeled as such. My refrigerator is a bit chaotic, but everyone in

It's also a good idea to have a list near your bed.

Re: [QUAD-L] itching

2016-03-29 Thread Quadius
I have an interesting problem until recently. I had a tremendous amount of
itching and flaking problems for the better part of the first 18 1/2 years
I was injured. I, however, have pretty much resolved my dandruff and in
large part the itching problems I had.

I began working on this eager and a half ago. I worked with the product T
gel shampoo whenever the dandruff was really bad, but the key was to let
the product sit on your scalp for 5 to 7 minutes. I also had to wash my
hair at least every third day, preferably every other day because my hair
was so oily and looked disgusting.

Well I started to use hats in order to drive my chair with a Magictek. So
even though my hair got oily, I started watching it less and less and
noticed a significant improvement in the flaky scalp. After about eight
months of this I noticed that the oiliness had diminished to the point
where I didn't have to wash my hair but once a week. It still looks good
throughout the majority of the week.

My hairstylist said that when you wash it too much it encourages the hair
to produce too much oil. Anyway, I was able to gradually use generic forms
of head and shoulders in order to control the dandruff and right now (knock
on wood) I haven't had to use a dandruff controlling shampoo in more than a
year.

Good luck on getting rid of the itching.

Quadius
PS in an effort to disclose everything, I do have problems with itching on
my face and hair whenever my blood pressure goes up or I have minor A.D. I
don't consider this part of the itching scalp problem because this is
purely neurological.

PSS sorry if I made too many mistakes, I was in a hurry and didn't really
go through my correspondence to carefully.

I had a supra pubic for about 17 years. I had to have my bladder diverted
into a urostomy due to bladder atrophy, pain from the catheter rubbing
against the bladder and terrible bladder spasms. I was having three or four
battles with A.D. every week.

Unfortunately the urostomy hasn't been the fix everyone thought it would be
for me. I still have significant trouble with pain, but it is much better
than the last couple of years with the SP.

Like Bob said, a suprapubic is easily reversed. You can simply let the hole
close and go back to a normal catheter if necessary.

Re: [QUAD-L] Manicure/pedicure?

2016-03-03 Thread Quadius
Which nails are thick? Toenails or fingernails?

I go to a professional in order to get my nails done. They do use a file
for some of it, but they tend to use a very soft one which doesn't bother
me at all. If the file is to rough it can cause bad sensation.

As for bleeding under the nails, I might suggest that you soak his fingers
in a basin for about 10 to 15 minutes. It would also be a good idea to try
to exfoliate all of dead skin off of the hands. There is some really good
tools which have a rubber end on them (most manicurist have them available
in my give one to you if you explain what you need it for) so you can clean
under the nails in order to get all the debris out without causing bleeding.

I have problems with bleeding also, but I tend to use lotion under the
nails in order to keep the fingertips from being too dry.

If you can find a really good manicurist, they can really help with the
nails and get them whether not so crusty. Lately I've had to have a
pedicure done because I was having some difficulty with fungus. It has
helped considerably, but you need to find a manicurist who understands
English and is willing not to be too aggressive on the feet.

Also I might recommend soaking the fingers before you cut the nails and
then using the smallest clippers you can get. There also baby nail clippers
which might help you out. Sometimes I have to close my eyes and try not to
think about the nails when they are cleaning out the bottom of them because
I am sensitive to that also. It drives me up a wall, but I would rather
have my nails clean and fungus free, so I put up with the discomfort for a
little while.

Good luck. And the suggestion about a podiatrist is a good one especially
when it comes to toenails. From my experience are pretty aggressive
though.

Re: [QUAD-L] Shoulders

2016-02-14 Thread Quadius
Where does it hurt on the shoulder blade. Is it where the shoulder blade
and the neck attached? That's where I get my pain. Some of mine is caused
because I don't have any support for the back of your arms when I lean back.
I have some suggestions if it's back there, but don't really know much
about shoulder joint pain. My pain is always starts on the upper left-hand
portion of the shoulder blade and then radiates up into the neck and the
head.

Re: [QUAD-L] Could use some help: Debris in the suprapubic catheter tube

2016-02-01 Thread Quadius
I would recommend talking to your urologists and possibly looking at the
likelihood you might have developed stones. In the past the increased
sediment for my SP was almost always due to bladder stones. However, it
also might be what you're drinking. If for instance you are drinking things
that have a high acidity, it might be causing your urine to become more
deluded. For instance I have had this problem with lemonade in the past.

Re: [QUAD-L] colostomys

2015-12-05 Thread Quadius
I have the surgery performed in late May. The recovery was next to nothing.
I didn't have any problems with pain or anything like that.

I had difficulty with my bowels transitioning to the colostomy. My body
kept wanting to put out a large amount every 48 hours because I had been
doing that for 20 years. We ended up going to bowel irrigation (similar to
an enema through the colostomy stoma). We do this every two days and it
really helps with my bowels. Don't have too many problems with stoll coming
out at odd times.
Wish I had done it earlier.

Dave,
I use a mouse stick and Dragon, not to mention my trackball. I have been
using the same trackball for a good eight years now. I simply got one from
logic Tech and it had no problem with it whatsoever. In fact I don't really
like the newer models, so I've stuck with the old one. Even though it is
wired.

The really not that expensive and they are much better than a mouse, in my
opinion.

Re: [QUAD-L] Gallbladder problems?

2015-11-09 Thread Quadius
I had a colostomy surgery performed in late May, but I had some
difficulties with too much still coming out every other day and blowing the
waffer. I was at wits and when I contacted the store when yours from the
colostomy supply company as well as my own stoma nurse. They both suggested
bowel irrigation. Since my body have been used to doing the bowel regimen
every other day for 20 years, we switch to irrigating my bowels every other
day and have had tremendous success with that. It's not for everybody, but
it has made my somewhat irritable bowel problem much easier to control.
That way if I get diarrhea I am able to put on an irrigation sleeve and
repeat my bowel regimen.

[QUAD-L] work from home

2015-10-22 Thread Quadius
Hello everyone,
I haven't written in a while to write a question. I do remember someone
mentioning a while ago about ways to work at home. Well, my brother has
recently reinjured his back and is unable to go back to work right now.
Does anyone have any ideas on work from home.

He is really struggling financially. He's eliminated landline, cable, and a
multitude of other things. I remember someone mentioning you can earn some
money by doing surveys.

I really do appreciate your feedback. The way I look at it this information
can help many of us on here.

It's better to just get the calcium in a multivitamin and take it in

Re: [QUAD-L] outdoor ramp in snow

2015-09-25 Thread Quadius
I have an additional problem because I am tall and have to tilt back in
order to get into my van. You would think this would make it easier to get
traction on the back wheels, but it doesn't. Worst part is that because I'm
tilted back it won't let me go up the ramp at full speed. Therefore I don't
get a lot of power.

I can wear button-down shirts and other things, but I have to wear my strap
across my body. It goes from my left shoulder down to my right hip. Just
like a seatbelt.

I have a friend that did the same thing Joan did and it worked out fine for
him.
I I have found that pants aren't as difficult as you might think to wear.
I basically wear boxer briefs below my pants to protect my skin and because
my urine bag comes off the side of my right leg I have had someone cut
Velcro into the side so I can put the bag through there.

I know one company that does it for veterans, but I'm not sure if there are
any other companies out there to do is type of service for reduced rates.

Re: [QUAD-L] Belly binder

2015-07-14 Thread Quadius
I've been using abdominal binders for 20 years now. They aren't that
difficult to put on it you know how to do it or have the help. Because if
you're doing it by yourself it is difficult.

As for me, it keeps my posture straight which helps me prevent the shoulder
injuries whenever I'm not in proper position. It also aids in my breathing,
blood pressure, and appearance. I don't use it for the bowels anymore. I
got more out of abdominal massage therapy when I was doing my bowel
regimen. Now I have a colostomy, so that doesn't apply.

I used an abdominal binder with a suprapubic for about 17 years and had no
difficulty with it whatsoever. I have boys worn my abdominal binder about
an inch or two above where the suprapubic goes in. I did have problems with
my suprapubic, but that was because of bladder atrophy.

My abdominal binder woes are pretty complicated now. I have an urostomy and
a colostomy, which requires a special type of abdominal binder. Whenever I
wear the top binder without the lower one to support my belly protrudes a
little too much down there and causes difficulty with the way first.

I have ordered a new abdominal binder, but right now I'm using one which
was designed for a urostomy and I cut a hole in the other side. It works,
but it's not the greatest.

I do have a slight quad gut, but if I take the abdominal binders off it's
much more pronounced in my spine curves a lot more. That's why it's
important to where the abdominal binders for many people. You can
definitely tell the difference between someone who wears them all the time
and people who do not. At least that's my opinion. I'm sure there are some
people who are able to maintain posture without abdominal binders.

Hopefully that helps a little.

receive support. The one thing that all super quads have is
support...they have much family, friends, checkbook, donations,
caregivers. The average quad just doesn't have all that behind them and

[QUAD-L] more colostomy issues

2015-06-19 Thread Quadius
I apologize in advance for the graphic nature of the email. So, if you are
squeamish or don't really care to read about colostomy difficulties please
disregard.

I am writing on this website because I have the unique problem of being a
quad with a colostomy and unable to use my hands to do a lot of the
maintenance issues which able-bodied people are able to win may have
colostomy's.

I am having difficulty with pancaking. For those of you, like me up until
at least a few minutes ago, who had no idea what this is, it is when the
stool collects at the stoma and doesn't push down into the bag.

Do any quadriplegics have that problem with their colostomy and if so what
do you do to alleviate the problem? I am presently using a deodorizer which
has some lubricant in it in addition to a cleanser which also is supposed
to facilitate the movement of the stool. Neither is working effectively.

The stool is soft, but it's not diarrhea type.

Thanks,
Quadius
PS we were doing pretty well with the colostomy wafer. Basically I'm using
the same technique I use for my urostomy, just adding a little bit of stoma
paste.
However, pancaking does create a problem even for a well sealed colostomy
wafer.

[QUAD-L] magic bullets

effective as the brand-new ones.

Sometimes I don't get the magic bullets until they only have one month left
on the expiration date. That's the problem with getting them from the VA,
but I don't want to waste them and throw them out.

If you would like some of them, please contact me privately and I will see
what I can work out with you. Don't worry, I'm not looking to make money at
all. Just email me and we can chat about it.

True, Like Dianna and others said, It depends on whom you hire and what
they are willing to do as a live in caregiver. In my area sleeping rooms
alone go for an average of $100-$150 each week, So you figure that person
can save at least $600 per month on rent, Plus they will not need to pay
utility bills if you do, so they save that way also,After figuring that
stuff in, then you need to write a list of all you want done and see how
much cash they want on top of the free live in home, Like Dianna said if
they just want pay under the table, they usually take a bit less, but you
need to work out a monthly pay for them that you can both be happy with.
Good luck, let us know how it works out when you get it all set up down the

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I also
have a urostomy and am perplexed as to why I'm having difficulties right
now. We did try using just a little stone and paste and we also decided to
use the same method we use for the urostomy. So far it seems to be working
considerably better than it was the way they showed us.

Unfortunately my nurse friend from down the road is on vacation. She's the

I used to wear them religiously, but then I had a little difficulty with

I wear something akin to the new Sketcher's (spelling) steel toe work

Robitussin is good, but you could also take Mucinex which of the same thing
but in pill form. Make sure you drink a lot of fluids in order to get the
secretions out as quickly as you can.

It's best to get into a Trendelenburg position and hang in there position
for quite a while. Using the quad cough is essential once the secretions
have moved to the upper part of the lung. I often use a large vibrator on
my side as I lie in the Trendelenburg position. This facilitates the
secretions coming up and if I am not able to get it out by myself then I
have someone help me with Quad coughing. Make sure you get the secretions
out or you could develop pneumonia. Sitting up is essential once you're
free of secretions. Getting up in your chair as much as possible is also
important.
I have a lot of experience with this.

2015-04-10 Thread Quadius
Does the individual who has a tremendous amount of bladder pain from a
suprapubic still contribute to the list? I was thinking about this problem
the other day and I might have a possible reason this might be occurring.

I discovered that I have a strange allergy or intolerance to silicone
materials being placed my body. This was first discovered when they changed
me from a plastic tracheotomy device to a silicone one. My skin grow around
the device and it had to be yanked out of my neck. Yes it hurt like hell
and caused a mammoth scar which I had to have corrected later on.

After about four years my supplies of catheters were changed from latex to
silicone. I started having massive bladder spasms and terrible UTIs. I
discovered this was the problem when I changed my catheter and put in a
latex catheter which I forgot I had. The spasms and pain stopped within
five minutes. Anytime I have something which is pure silicone in my body
for any length of time I developed problems.

I just found a binder/belt that has a ring built into it that bag snaps

I think a binder with a pouch bubble over the stoma area would be good
idea. You just need a binder that does not over lap itself. Or you would
have to line up 2 pouches on the binder. The binder I use now over laps
itself, so I had to cut 2 holes in the binder in that spot.

Re: [QUAD-L] Binder and Colotomy

The one that I'm using is only 9 inches tall also. Because I have a long
torso I use a 10 inch regular binder above the binder that I use for my
lower abdominal region.
You need to adhere the colostomy/urostomy to the skin and then the binder
will help prevent any problems. If you get the right size it should move it
all and it is pretty easy to put on.

My problem is going to be that I I am considering getting a colostomy along
with the urostomy I already have. Then getting a binder that I can wear
with both of them will be a little more tricky.

with it. It takes me 28 seconds to go from the lowest position to the for
this position back.

Would love to hear what your experiences are.

[QUAD-L] Bliister

2015-03-08 Thread Quadius
woke up this morning and discovered that I have a blister on my rear end.
It's in a bad place. It appears to be about 0.5 cm x 0.25 cm. Does anyone
have any idea how I can heal this without breaking the blister open?
I have bagbalm I'm available as well as the healing honey. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. I don't want to have to go to the wound doctor,
because this right now is very small and I'm afraid it will get worse if I
get in the chair. Quadius

Re: [QUAD-L] Bliister

2015-03-08 Thread Quadius
Well, bad news is the blister busted.

I have no idea how it happened. I normally have pristine skin, but a small
blister on the rear end today. Was lying in bed yesterday on my alternating
pressure overlay. The only thing I can think of is that maybe there was
something under me when I was in my chair the day before.

Anyway, we change the mattress out to my low air loss mattress. That's why
I keep it as a backup just in case I have a small irritation. Right now I
decided to put bag balm on the blister/slightly opened area.

Thanks for the advice. If it gets worse I will definitely look at the
bandages.

I have found that calmoseptine works really well. You can get it at a drug
store or order it from Medical Express Supply. I keep it on hand use it

Re: [QUAD-L] pain in neck pillow

2015-03-04 Thread Quadius
I have been using what I think is a buckwheat horseshoe pillow to allow my
neck and shoulder to heal.
I have used a water pillow, but I didn't find it to be too affected for me.

 Derrick,

Has anyone tried or use a pillow with water in it?
I am worried about it being heavy and sliding down my back when sitting up
 in bed?

I have tried a dozen pillows and none helped with my neck pain.
I usually end up sleeping with no pillow.

 Thanks,

Wondering if anybody has found a way to operate devices that are using the
new Bluetooth technology as a remote. I can capture most infrared signals
and operate them through environmental control unit, but the Bluetooth
technology is another beast.

Do you have an ipad or iphone? you can control it with one or two
switches. You need one of these

next to control ir devices you need this

if you ever get a hole in the mattress, which I did, it can be easily
patched with the patch kit that comes from Roho.

this is what I'm presently using, but I am firm believer that low air loss
mattresses that alternate are the best to use for open wounds. Just use a
simple sheet over the mattress and something so that your wound gets the
 maximum amount of air.

Re: [QUAD-L] air mattress

2015-02-09 Thread Quadius
if your mattress alternates or varies between pressure, you really don't
need to be turned. I use a really inexpensive system, also by Drive, which
is just a simple overlay. I had to go to the system because the low air
loss I was using wouldn't harden enough to do my bowel regimen.

It cost me around $55. I started using the system in March and had to
replace the control box, but that particular mattress was about seven years
old, even though it hadn't been used that often. I'm hoping this one last
at least a year or more. The mattress itself has worked wonderful, because
I took the cover off my low air loss and put it over the overlay and
mattress. It protects the mattress.

But, I found one that really felt great and seems to do the job well. It's
by Drive, it has 8 inch purple tubes. I don't know the difference, but one
is listed at about $330 and another at $5000. Looks like same photo. I
bought the one that was about $330. If you get a flat, you can buy extra
tubes and change them. Half the tubes inflate while the other half
deflates. The hospital says you should still get turned every 2 hours, but
I go all night without getting turned. Anyway, The one I got looks just
 like this one.

Has anyone got a new low pressure air mattress?
The bed and mattress that I got in 1998 is on last leg. I had a
Sunerise Medical pump that is no longer around and the mattress
will not hold air at my feet.
Medi-i-dont-care will not buy me any new mattress. I did get new
bed frame. There is so many different manufactures and various
kinds and prices and of course you can not ship it back after
using/trying it out. If anyone has any suggestions of what mattress
and pump worked best and where did you purchase it. If you could,
provide the model number. Thanks in advance,
