[RBW] Pasela options?
Anyone had an opportunity to compare the new hypertex casing that's being offered in Soma's version of the Pasela with the standard and tourguard Pasela, both for ride quality and actual width/size? (I'm thinking that, since the new 650b version is narrower with the hypetex, that the 700c version might be as well) I'm hoping it rides similarly to the standard Pasela with the flat protection of the tourguard and maybe offers a perfect size for my Rambouillet with fenders... B-) I'd just go with the 32 but if it's a couple of mm's narrower than marked, I might be able to squeeze the 35 in there. RE: [RBW] Re: Nitto Mark's Rack Hardware
This raises a question I've been ponderin' for a while. Does Nitto offer mini-rack style canti-mount struts for the Mark's rack? I've seen some made for the Campee rack but they're likely too short. RE: [RBW] Riding posture - advice appreciated
It runs counter to the typical Riv advice, but my back pain went away when I moved my saddle forward a bit. This was recommended during a pro fitting I had done in preparation for ordering a custom. The other trick I've tried with some success is more of an attitude/mental thing--what the club riders used to say was to keep your back flat/straight and your pelvis tilted, imagine you are trying to touch the top tube with your belly button... Steve -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners- bu...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Paul Yeoh Sent: Monday, December 20, 2010 9:41 AM To: RBW Owners Bunch Subject: [RBW] Riding posture - advice appreciated After looking at some photos taken by Early Grey of me riding his Sam with drop bars (example here:) http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/5260456237/ I noticed that I am particularly bent in the lower back. Well, no surprise really, I've noticed this elsewhere in my life but cycling on drop bars makes it really pronounced. What are the implications of this crooked posture? How would one go about straightening the spine during cycling or anything else? On today's ride on my bike (Sam w moustache bars set about level with saddle height) I made an effort to keep my back straight and tilt the pelvis more. Not easy, and I had a mild back ache 30 minutes into the ride. What does that mean? On another note, on my way back down the mountain I had an absolute blast on the Sam. Smooth, fast and winding road on Marathon Extremes and tektro cantilevers - wow. To me, the way the Sam feels on fast descents is the highlight of this all-round fantastic bike. (the way downhills can be a highlight of the overall cycling experience, unless you're riding rough pavement on a racing frame with 23 mm slicks at 100 psi) The extremes probably slowed down overall speed a little but still rode very smooth and comfortable. Not buzzy at all. Any advice / help with improving my posture much appreciated! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. When you put it back together, you put the Shimano washer into the lever the only way it can go, with that single tab lined up with the slot in the shift lever, and then lined up the square recess on the back side of the Shimano washer with the square shape on the plug that's in the bar. You are probably just off by 90 degrees. If you suspect I'm right, do the following: 1. Move the shifter all the way down 2. Remove the shifter and the Shimano washer 3. Move the derailer by hand into the middle of the cogset. Pedal so the chain actually goes to a middle cog. That will put some slack in the cable 4. Now put the lever and Shimano assembly back on, but rotated 90 degrees. You might be pulling against cable, so help yourself out by pushing the derailer a little more or have a helper do that part 5. These are the ideal shopping panniers: big, relatively inexpensive, boxy, stiffened so that you can drop a full paper grocery sack into each side, easily drape over rack, cut away on leading side for foot clearance. But the older ones, as mine, have fiddly straps under the linking nylon webbing to attach them to the rack, AND they sag (sometimes into the rear spokes) if you put 20 lb in one. I bought a 6' length of 1/2 metal strip, cut in half, bent each half to fit inside the interior of the panniers' mouth, and riveted the bracings in place. Then I constructed a riveted, on-its-side (or horizontal) capital I on the center handle (central stiffener attached at ends to perpendicular braces) so that I can just drape the pair over the rack and secure one of the braces to a rack cross strut with a toe strap. RE: [RBW] Re: SKS Secrets
In my experience, the SKS P-50 is a better match for 650b tires. I've use them with everything from Col de la Vie's to Hetres and Fatty Rumkins and they've worked fine... Steve -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com]on Behalf Of kevin lindsey Sent: Monday, October 18, 2010 11:49 AM To: RBW Owners Bunch Subject: [RBW] Re: SKS Secrets Thanks for the thorough reply. Pending further input, I'm leaning towards the conclusion that P45s simply don't work very well with 41mm tires. However, I'll make a call up to RBW later this morning for their input. The warp was noticeable right out of the box, with a 15-20 degree twist. Even with the greatest clearance I obtained on my front fenders, the warp still rubbed my tire. Kevin On Oct 18, 8:41 am, Jeremy Till jeremy.t...@gmail.com wrote: I've installed SKS's a few times (i have a couple of pairs which i put on seasonally here in norcal); it's definitely a trick the first time but gets easier each time you do it. In terms of clearances, the fender clearance is determined by two things: the width of the fender and the positioning of the frame bridges/fork crown. The rule for adequate clearance with fender size is usually tire width+ ~10mm; so if you're using 41mm tires you should be shooting for about a 50mm wide fender. If your SKS's are the P50 model then you should be all right, if they're something smaller like the P45 that might be causing some of your clearance issues. Other bleriot owners will have to chime in to tell you whether or not the frame can take that combination, I don't have experience with them myself. My usual order of operations is to secure the fork crown mount and bridge mounts in the rear, focusing on having a good fender line between the bridges, and then sliding the rear of each fender in on the stays (leaving all 4 nuts loose) until the fender line matches, at which point i secure the bolts. I will say that I'm probably way less picky about fender line than most on here. Since fenders are kind of a functional, seasonal thing for me I don't really care about getting them just so. In terms of the front of the fender being warped, do you only notice it on the bike or or when it's off? If it's only on the bike, it may be that your brakes (i assume you're using the silver sidepulls) are deflecting it a little, that happens with the shimano sidepulls on one of my bikes. Again, it's only a few mm so I don't really care about it, YMMV. On Oct 18, 7:49 am, kevin lindsey lindsey.ke...@gmail.com wrote: I'm in the process of building my Bleriot and thought a pair of SKS fenders would be practical and look great, too. However, I was naively unprepared for the amount of tweaking, cutting, fitting, and cursing required to install these things on my bike, a circumstance made worse by the almost-nonexistent instructions included with the fenders. Suffice it to say that I botched the job and have had to order a new set of stays for my second installation attempt. Couple of questions: a) I have a set of 41mm 650bs and am a little concerned about whether there is enough room for tires this big and a set of fenders on the Bleriot. I got the rear fender installed more or less OK, but the clearance between it and the tire was really tight. Am I pushing things to far to expect 41s to fit with fenders? b) Are there any secrets I'm overlooking when installing SKSs? c) The front of my front fender came warped. Is there a way of unwarping it, or will I have to cut it off? Thanks in advance for any help. This is our quiet little corner of the web where we get to make the occasional snide comment about carbon fiber bikes. Whoa, what's up with the carbon bashing. Have you ever consider that most carbon bikes don't have room for fenders and that is probably the reason your friends don't ride in the rain! I have a carbon Calfee and love it. For any ride over 40 miles, that is my go to bike to ride. Comfort, light, smooth and quiet. The only down side is there isn't any room for fender, especially under the carbon fork. Note, I've been caught out in the rain on my Calfee and since it doesn't have fenders, you get pretty wet :) So, I ended up getting a steel cross bike and putting fenders on it for commuting and riding in the rain. But when a friend was shopping around for a bicycle recently, they came across an interesting find: Lyon's custom $3,000 Rivendell bicycle. The bicycle had been on sale on the website Craigslist. It's pretty amazing when you think about it, Lyon said. The person that saw it knew right away it was mine. Lyon rides her bike from her Boxford home to Salem Hospital, where she has worked for 23 years. She makes the 30-mile round trip each day, except for the colder months. Two years ago, a thief broke the lock and stole her bike. After the theft, she searched a number of websites and local bike shops, but nothing turned up — until Tuesday. Lyon eventually bought a new bike after putting in a claim with her homeowner's insurance. Salem Detective Sgt. James Page said they don't know who stole the bicycle but were able to recover it yesterday from a Somerville man who paid $200 for it on Tuesday. The Somerville man bought the bike from a Marblehead man who didn't know it had been stolen. Police were able to match the serial number on the bike turned in with Lyon's bike. It goes to show you, Melinda and her friend never gave up on it, Page said. We're happy she's happy. Detectives Tom Brennan and Jack Doyle handled the investigation, according to Page. Page said Lyon plans to pick up her bicycle today. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. And the high handlebars and comfy handling of the bike combined to make riding seriously fun. The only thing less than ideal was the weather, which was slightly on the hot and humid side. Although not as bad as feared. At least until Tuesday. A short jaunt on the trails that morning had me perspiring quite freely. Didn't see any fish mistaking the air for the water, but it was close. May be adding a few photos to this set in the near future. Had to get a roll of film developed. And, well, we'll see what develops. Otherwise, the set is here - http://tinyurl.com/2bdcrct BTW, finally have over 1,000 miles on the Hillborne. For some reason, it was the last of the three main bikes to do that this year. Will need to make up for that. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. RE: [RBW] Re: 60cm Maxway Hillborne Photos
It's useful for my particular setup to have the bottle mounts a bit lower. I ride a 54cm frame and use Polar water bottles which are a bit taller than standard, and I have a frame pump mounted under my top tube. If the bottle mounts are too high, the top of my bottle hits the frame pump...so maybe the lower mounts should be a size specific feature? I suppose you could use spacers to hop over the derailleur clamp. It'll be tough to reach down that far to grab the bottle while riding. Why not have it higher? Something I'm missing? RE: [RBW] Re: Riv encounter, Frankfort Michigan
Sure, should've flagged me down. I recall getting a bit nervous when a Riv fan in a car pulled up next to me shouting and gesturing at my Rambouillet until I figured out he was hollering nice bike, cool Riv! not Die, evil bike riding scum! Getting flagged by another rider is pleasant in comparison. B-) I've done some of that route on DALMAC--nice roads indeed... ...I'll be up that way again sometime not too far in the future, maybe not this year but soon--I really enjoyed my visit last month. I just started riding last year, didn't know what I know now, but, have learned what I should have gotten in the first place and have ordered an A. Homer Hilsen. Although I live a bit away from the Wheelway, I am in Petoskey a few times a week and ride the Wheelway often. I remember seeing your handlebar bags off in the distance and was on the look out to see if it was a Rivendell. Of course, it was your Saluki, which was my first Rivendell sighting. I remember being in a hurry and giving you my normal head nod that I give everyone. In hindsight, I should have stopped anyway. By the way, if you're in the area again and want a great ride, my favourite in the area is starting at East Park, just West of Petoskey on the the Wheelway, through Harbor Springs, then, riding by way of M-119, Lower Lake Drive, back on M-119 up to Good Hart and on to Cross Village. It's a little over 100 km round trip and takes you through the Tunnel of Trees with great views of Lake Michigan. There are many parking areas along the way if you want a shorter trip, and you could continue another 40 km to Mackinaw City. All in all a great day ride. I've been know to have brain farts (and grain farts), but I'm thinking what lugs are those? They aren't ours. We did use Henry James crowns for about 20 frames for a while there, till we got our own. The dropouts are raised in back but not in front, and that wasn't a WF style back then. The fork rake looks a bit better than the early WF-builts (nowhere close to post-'97). The seller may not know how to measure a chainstay, so I can't go by the 42cm listing (I think the shortest ever was 42.5). But mainly, the lugs. It seems odd to me. too, that JB would paint one that-a-way. Once somebody owns it, it's their deal, and we don't hold JB to any style (he knows what I like, but a guy's got a right to make a living). I called him now, line's busy, I'll try again. The serial number would tell the story. The seller de-listed it, I think. If it's a Riv underneath that pump instead of seat tube paint job, then fine etc., but at this point I'm still guessing it's not. Also, after the first paintjob, Grant/Riv no longer controls the paint job style choices so if it's a second paintjob, that would also explain the difference. I am a little confused by the poster not knowing the model, though. It would seem that any Riv owner would know that. Well, that follows--Grant's stated that in support of the wheelsize he'll carry every 650b tire he can (that will fit Riv products presumably, since he does not carry the really fat knobbies). I have nearly 200 miles on a set of the PariMotos on my Saluki and they're pretty nice. Fast and supple, and so far no punctures (knock wood) They ride smoother at similar pressure than CLDV's but a tick less so than Trimlines. I've been abusing them as a test prior to commiting them to a multiday tour on mixed dirt and pavement of varying quality. I've ridden them on a lot of pavement, and quite a bit of dirt. Even (accidently) rode through a glitter of broken glass without trouble aside from the enamal I ground off my teeth waiting for the tire to hiss. Posted a few shots of them in action to my Flick'r--they work pretty well on singletrack! Fast and decent grip (for what they are) on hardpack, a bit slithery in sand. Note that going through a thin layer of sand over hardpack they make a sound very much like a tire hissing flat which was alarming! http://www.flickr.com/photos/40738...@n08/4653762582/ Steve -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com]on Behalf Of J L Sent: Monday, May 31, 2010 3:31 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] New tires at RBW When I was over at RBW headquarters this weekend I noticed a pair of Pacenti Pari-Moto 650b tires on a smaller sized Hilbourne. RE: [RBW] Bleriot vs. Quickbeam efficiency
The Bleriot has slightly slacker angles than the QB--can you compare your saddle setback? It's amazing what a difference in perceived effort a cm or so of saddle setback can make...check it by dropping a plumb bob (I use a washer on a piece of cotton string) from the nose of your saddle past the bottom bracket and measuring from the string to the center of your crankarm bolt. Steve -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com]on Behalf Of Tyler Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2010 6:13 PM To: RBW Owners Bunch Subject: [RBW] Bleriot vs. Quickbeam efficiency I've had my bleriot for 2 years and my quickbeam for 1 year. I bought the quickbeam to essentially be a simpler, single-speed version of my bleriot. Since then the quickbeam has become my preferred bike. I find that I'm (empirically) more efficient on my quickbeam and don't tire as easily. After a 50 mile ride on the bleriot I feel tired; after the same ride on the quickbeam I feel fine. I don't ride with a computer on either of my bikes, the only constant being my cycling partner. I find when I'm on my bleriot that I'm regularly slower than her but when I'm on my quickbeam I'm regularly faster. I'm at the point where I only ride the bleriot if there are going to be hills that I can't tackle on my quickbeam. Being slow doesn't bother me as much as the perceived difference in efficiency. The bleriot feels like it's dragging some extra weight regardless of the gear that I'm in while the quickbeam feels like it wants to keep rolling. If the bleriot felt similarly effortless I wouldn't be bothered if it was actually slower than the quickbeam. I wish that I had a way to definitively gauge this dragging feeling. The bikes are setup very similarly: Quickbeam: 60cm frame, 700 x 32 paselas, 32h stock wheels, sugino crank with 40/32 x 16/19 gearing, noodle bars, brooks saddle, MKS touring pedals without clips/straps Bleriot: 61cm frame, 650b x 42 grand bois hetres, 36h lesnik-built wheels, sugino crank with 48/38/26 x 11-30 gearing, noodle bars, brooks saddle, MKS grip king pedals Sometimes I wonder if the hetres are just slow but that seems to go counter to the ride reports of dozens of people who ride with hetres and claim they're quite fast. I thought about swapping to cypres tires (650b x 31) but that's a $120 investment I'm not ready to drop.. especially given that I've read you won't tell much of a difference between hetres and cypres on paved roads. The quickbeam is the first single speed bike that I've owned. Is it common to find that a single speed bike is noticeably more efficient for its 1 gear relative to a multi-speed bicycle in a gear of the same gain ratio ? Can any other quickbeam owners tell me about the perceived efficiency difference between their quickbeam and their geared road bike(s)? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. RE: [RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?
Hi y'all--Kirk sent an update about the PariMoto to the 650b list last week and I asked him about how he envisioned this tire being used. Based on his response, I'm more excited than ever about these tires! Well, here's my question and his answer: I asked: There's some discussion/speculation about the intent of this tire on the RBW googlelist. Can you weigh in briefly on the appropriateness of this new tire for, say mixed surface riding, multiday supported or unsupported touring and so on? I personally am planning to do some touring (supported or credit card) on my Saluki in a few weeks and I'd be interested in whether your new tire would be a good choice for a ride that will include packed dirt railtrails and pavement of various quality, or if I should stick with the Trimlines for the time being. If you wish to offer some thought in the thread on that list but don't care to subscribe, post a response here and I'd be happy to summarize there if you like. Kirk replied: The tire will be appropriate for all the riding you have described. The tires were intended to strike the balance between a Trimline and a race tire. It's not going to have the same puncture resistance as a heavier tire, but should not be an issue for your needs. I see now that the word event is causing some confusion. The tire is going to be a great all-rounder and will not be useful just on sunny days or competition. I did a bit of googling and came across a thread on the Serotta list that might offer some insight on the PariMoto. Excerpt: ...the Pair-Motto will have a nice file tread, will be lighter than the Col DO or Orson, but should be just as durable as a similar treaded 700c version which millions of people ride everyday and think nothing of it... The Pair-Motto would make a much better event tire than the Col DO or Orson, but it was intended to be used as a great all around road tire. Link: http://forums.serotta.com/showthread.php?t=62641 It sounds like a tire I would use on dirt roads/railtrails and pavement of variable quality. RE: [RBW] 650B Quickbeam? (was: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?)
I almost missed it myself! The last (silver) run of QB's had two smaller sizes than previous runs, a 50cm and 52cm. They featured 650b wheels and Silver sidepulls rather than 700c and cantis. I posted to the 650b list that I wanted suggestions for a 650b fixed gear like a Quickbeam, and a helpful fellow (Ron Lau, I think) gently pointed out that there was just such a thing--a 650b Quickbeam. I ordered the very last 52cm they had the next day! I usually ride a 54cm but it was easy to adopt a 52cm QB to fit me--didn't even need full quill extension of a Tech. Deluxe stem...I can't even use Tech Deluxes on some of my 54cm Rivs--can't get the bars low enough with them! As far as I can tell/recall, the geometry is the same as other QB's-just scaled down a bit for the two smaller sizes and smaller wheels. I've shared them before but here's some pics of it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/40738...@n08/4317180490/in/set-72157623307633298/ Steve -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com on behalf of Philip Williamson Sent: Thu 5/13/2010 2:16 PM To: RBW Owners Bunch Subject: [RBW] 650B Quickbeam? RE: [RBW] Riv frames work great with drop bars
Hi Grant--thanks for jumping in. I can confirm your statements--I have three Rivs, a Heron road, a Rambouillet and a Saluki and the seat tube angles and top tube lengths vary but they all fit the same (very well) with drops. Same bars (Noodles) and the stem extensions are within a cm of each other... Steve -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com]on Behalf Of Grant Petersen Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 2010 5:54 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] Riv frames work great with drop bars It seems to me that because of the long top tubes most of Rivendells frames are not designed for drop bars. With the long top tubes you need bars that come back towards you to provide a comfortable reach. UnSo! Terribly, terrifically unso. The Top Tube Ruse in RR--40/ 41? talked all about that, but I realize people come and go and land late and may skip over or miss, but basically, it's like this. Forgive lack of detail in these explanations: Shallow seat tubes neutralize long top tubes. We have shallow seat tubes. Higher bars super-'eutralize long top tubes. We're the Cosmos champs in that cat. As bars get higher, your arms become more horizontal, and that makes them longer (effectively, not literally). Tall quill stems always help, but with our bikes--as much as I likem we gottem, they're less necessary than they are with a '73 Colnago, or '84 Centurion Ironman, etc. I cannot image more drop-bar friendly bikes than ours. I wouldn't design a bike that wouldn't work fine with a drop. With appropriate-sized stems for the size. Granted, my personal Sam is a 60 with a 7stem, and that's borderline funky, but that's on a 62.5 top tube, and I'm a mere 5-9.9. RE: [RBW] Saluki History + Provenance
The Saluki was introduced in late 2003 or early 2004. They were produced by Toyo in Japan, same as the Rambouillet, and the first batch was offered in either green or silver. Custom paint options were offered through a painter local to Rivendell for an upcharge, which accounts for most of the other colors you see. the Caramel was a custom color I asked for and Grant created for my Saluki from the first batch, and which he liked well enough to make it the stock option for future frame runs. (I asked for a Harvest Gold, like some Riv customs but a richer tone with more brown) As far as I know, the Saluki was the first production 650b-wheeled frame offered in the U.S. since a few mountain bikes from Raleigh and Schwinn in the 80's. They were initially offered with either NOS (reintroduced?) DiaCompe centerpull brakes or cantis, and when the Tektro super-long reach sidepulls were introduced, Grant designed a frame to go with them and fitted the smaller frames with 650b, the larger with 700c. We've been good customers to JB over the years and ask his understanding this one rare time, and your's, too. RE: [RBW] STI 10 speed with 24-34 as low
Nice bike! I ran that rust tape on my same color Heron for a while--it's a good look. Running tan now to match the Banana bag... Steve -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com]on Behalf Of James Warren Sent: Sunday, April 25, 2010 1:51 PM To: RBW list Subject: [RBW] STI 10 speed with 24-34 as low http://www.flickr.com/photos/46035...@n07/4551628878/in/set-72157623929181002/ Hard to set up, especially since I used the Mavic crank, but it almost gets every gear I want. Anyway, I'm happy to add this Heron road photo, since we don't see enough of that model. I want to thank Todd Kuzma for being really helpful to me when he sold the frame to me in late 2007. I've been using the bike in various shifting modes (road thumbies for example) for a about a year and a half, and in mid-09, Nashbar was closing out their Ultegra 10 speed triple brifters for $140, so I couldn't resist. To get an extreme gear on the low end and not rub the chain on the high end, I sometimes have to turn the downtube barrel adjuster while riding. It actually kind of addresses the problem. It's like having some trim on your trim-lacking Shimano front brifters. -Jim W. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I'm not certain about the silver ones. When I had to fix a flat on my orange Quickbeam, I noticed it had a Panasonic rim strip, a Panasonic tube, and of course a Panaracer tire. It's a bit tricky to explain rather than show, but you can often notice as your shoulders move up towards your ears. Yeah, I call this turtling, when your shoulders hunch up around your ears and your neck disappears down into your chest, sometimes with your head hanging, too. Like a turtle pulling back into his shell. I try to avoid doing this by focussing on keeping my back straight(ish) and my head up...the old try to touch the top tube with your belly button, exercise works for me. Most of my lower back problems were solved by moving my saddle a bit forward and my bars down a little, FWIW.
