I always thought that email messages went into that accounts Sent
folder and not the Local Folders > Sent folder.

The Sent folder in Local Folders is where newsgroup messages I send
get placed.

That's the way my SeaMonkey works anyway.

The Sent folder in Local Folders is a computer folder.

You need to configure the email accounts "Copies & Folders" settings
to "Automatically place a copy in: "Sent" Folder on: Local Folders.

I always place the copy in the accounts Sent folder. It is the
default location.

Thanks for your response to my message...very much appreciated.

I was up until after 1AM trying to track down the information you

located in my Profile.  Here is what it presently looks like:

I have not given up on making SeaMonkey move a copy of an outgoing
message to my Sent folder...and I might have found my answer to my
problem. I took a look at Local Folders to see what clues the Sent
file might reveal, and this is what I found:

Name    Date modified    Type    Size
Sent    6/4/2020 7:23    File    2,605,188 ...
Sent.mst    6/4/2020 7.23 MSF File    2 KB

I decided that the Sent folder was likely full, so I proceeded to
rename the two folders (OLD_Sent and OLD_Sent.msf).  I then visited
the the OLD Sent and OLD Sent.msf Properties in order to make a new
Sent and a new Sent.msf folders like the original folders. Next, I
created two new folders in Local Folders (Sent and Sent.mst).  Well,
all seemed to be going good at this point; so I sent a test message to
myself to see if a copy was placed in my sent file. I got the
following window when I attempted to send my test message:

Save Message
Your message was sent, but a copy was not placed in your sent folder
(Sent) due to network or file access errors.
You can retry or save the message locally to Local Folders/sent Local
Folders.

 Retry    Save    Don't Save

My thinking was, the system just needs to find the new Sent - Sent.msf
folders and all would be working normally...thus, I clicked Save in
the above window.  My next move was paying a visit to Local Files>Sent
to see my saved message...I could not find my message.

All of the above tells me that something has changed as a result of my
actions.  I did not receive any "Save Message" window previously, when
I sent a message.  I also learned that the Sent folder was stuffed
(likely to its limits) and could not hold another message.  I also am
not able to find a way of opening the stuffed Sent folder to remove
the overload that exists.

I did notice that the original folders simply identified the type of
file as Sent and Sent.msf and the new folder identify is "Sent folder"
and "Sent.msf folder".  I cannot figure out how to change the new
folders to look like the old original folders.

Well, there you you have a recap of my actions taken to activate
storage of my sent messages on my system.  I can delete the new Sent
and Sent.msf folders and rename the the OLD_Sent and OLD_Sent.msf
folders to Sent and Sent.msf.

Frog

P.S. I continue to think about the other suggestions made in this
thread.  Be assured that they are all very much appreciated at this
time of trying to make my computer work.

Maybe if you had done things the other way around, it would have worked.
Instead of renaming the Sent folder, create a new folder called
Sent-old and transfer the messages from Sent to that.  If you use the
File button, it is very easy to transfer messages from one folder to
another.

Thanks for your response.

I have deleted the new Sent and Sent.msg folders. I then renamed the
OLD_Sent folder to Sent and the OLD_Sent.msg folder to Sent.msg. I am
now back to where I was originally. I still cannot make outgoing
messages flow into the Sent folder.

I really am having great difficulty making SeaMonkey work on my
computer.  I am not able to open any messages on the m.general or the
news.mozilla.com news groups.  Also, my responses to Inbox messages
are not being stored in my Sent folder (I don't know if they are being
recorded anywhere on my computer--simply put, they are lost).  My
SeaMonkey folders are stored on my E drive:
(SeaM_AboutConfig...SeaMonkeyAddNk...SeaMonkeyProfile).
I am receiving daily messages on my computer to the effect that
SeaMonkey has crashed.  I have tried to chase down what might be
causing this endless string of problems without much success.  Let me
say, however, that I suspect that my problem is associated with moving
from a 32 bit software program to a 64 bit SeaMonkey program...this
thinking is based on the date that I changed from 32 to 64 bits
SeaMonkey software. Please note that I am currently writing this
message on Thunderbird and all is working properly with this
software.  Also, I am using Windows 10 for both SeaMonkey and
Firefox/Thunderbird. Also, I have used Webroot Secure Anywhere
software on everything on my computer without any problems being found.

With all of the above said, here is where I need your help.  I have in
my mind that I must remove/reinstall SeaMonkey on my computer.

I have copied the three folders listed above in this message to a
different location on my computer...hopefully I will be able to fix
any problems that occur as a result of redoing my SeaMonkey software.
Am I correct?

The drive that the backups are recorded in is on the same drive (E)
where they were originally recorded...in a folder named
Backup_Seamonkey.  This should keep this data secure...correct?

I'm not sure which SeaMonkey software should be reinstalled on my
computer-32 or 64 bit...it seems like it should be the 64 bit version.
Is this a good guess?

Would it be a better choice to give up on SeaMonkey and turn to
Firefox/Thunderbird for my internet work?  This action would also
involve training another person on how to use the new software.

What other problems should I consider before I goof up my computer and
not be able to communicate with anybody for help?

Frog

If you have Thunderbird working, you could use its settings as a
reference to work out what is wrong with the SeaMonkey settings.  They
both use the same settings for newsgroups and email.

I have checked the settings, one agenst the other, and the settings are
the same as far as I can see. I have made copies of both settings and
compared one against the other and that did not show any differences.

Thanks for you help.

Why are you opening new threads?

You asked me a question, and I will reply to that question. Yes, I have
sent several connected threads over the past several days-weeks. This
response is not to show disrespect for the help I have received from
this newsgroup in past years…it has truly been professional in all
respects; and I appreciate what individuals willingly give of their time
to assist me and others, when they don’t know the answer to a SeaMonkey
problem. I am in no way an expert at the technical aspects of a
computer…in fact, I recently replaced my old flip phone for a new
Jitterbug smart phone…and even that is currently a challenge for my
lacking technical skills. Well, back to “Why are you opening new
threads? My recent threads do deal with one software program…SeaMonkey.
I presently do not know, after my many recent threads, why…I can see
newsgroup subjects, but I cannot open them in SeaMonkey, and I do not
know why my non-newsgroup messages are not being recorded in my Sent
folder. I decided, since I have not gotten a solution for my problems,
I would start attempting to take them one at a time. Yes, I am not the
youngest person to need help (83); but I have no other place to turn for
help…particularly now that I have to watch myself during this virus
situation. I hope you understand my reasoning for the message in this
thread…I was looking for easy to follow instructions in order that I
would be able to return to a normal SeaMonkey.

I will now recap what I have done as a result of your message:

Make a complete Windows backup

I made the backup.

Deinstall Seamonkey x86
Deinstall Seamonkey x64
Deinstall Thunderbird.
I did deinstall both Seamonkey x86 and x64. I did not deinstall
Thunderbird…it is the only way I have of accessing the newsgroup.

Reboot

I rebooted my system after SeaMonkey was removed.

Make sure that nothing is left in

C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey
C:\Program Files (x86)\SeaMonkey

I did make this check, and no SeaMonkey was found in Program Files.

Install SeaMonkey 2.53.2 x64.

I reinstalled SeaMonkey 2.53.2 x64 as you suggested.

Make sure it is installed in C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey

That is where it is installed.

Make it the default for mail, browser and news protocols
I do not know how to make default for browser and news protocols. It is
identified as default for mail.

.

Make sure that you profile data is found and accessible. If unsure
create a new profile and copy all the old data into it.

My profile was found without my involvement.

FRG

Here are the results---my problems in SeaMonkey have not changed.

When I click on a message to open it, I see one page flash by followed
by a second window…

Window #1 is titled “Re: Moderated posts on News.mozilla.org (technical)
– mozilla.general on news.mozilla.com – SeaMonkey”

Window #2 is titled “SeaMonkey”;and it is the one that comes up, when I
open my browser.

I can send a message from SeaMonkey…this message does not show up in my
Sent file.

Again, I do thank you for your help…and, hopefully, your continued help
in the future.

I never thought I would be responding to anything on this news

instantaneously with a small window informing me that the message was
undeliverable (for a reason that I can't remember). I, then, sent the
message again; and the same thing happened...over and over. I then made
a visit to this newsgroup and there were all of those messages that I
thought failed to send. In fact, you may have noticed, in the message I
sent to you in my recent thread had the same problem. After three

there was my problem. I changed the address to
mozilla.support.seamonkey and then the message sent as usual. In fact,
I had to change the to address in this message from Daniel
 to mozilla.support.seamonkey.

I hope this information will help in solving your problem.

P.S. As you know...my SeaMonkey Newsgroup access is on the fritz. Thus,
the problems I described above occurred while I was using Thunderbird.

I just made a visit to the Add/Remove Program list where I discovered
the following:

SeaMonkey 2.53.2 (x64 en-US)151 MB added 5/19/2020

SeaMonkey 2.53.2 (x86 en-US)134 MB Added 5/12/2020

Both entries are listed.

Back to your first question above--I did not make a back-up of my
profile before my action to over write an earlier version of SeaMonkey.
My big mistake...I lost all of my saved mail messages as a result of not
making a backup at that time.

I can't say, in response to question 2 above, why I didn't remove the
old version of SeaMonkey before attempting to overwrite the old with the
new version.

In response to question 3, it shows that I did install the x64 version
on 5/19/2020.

Now, knowing the mess that I have made, how do I get our of this dilemma
that I have made? Clearly I can see that I have two different entries
for SeaMonkey in the add/remove listing and that (I believe) is
responsible for my present difficulties. Now I want to get back to one
version of SeaMonkey without losing my addresses, browser page
listingss, etc..

I just hope I can follow the steps I must take to make SeaMonkey work.
I have been a user of this family of software from Netscape 2.X to the
present and I feel comfortable when using SeaMonkey.

Thanks for having patience with me and coming to my aid once again.

(SeaM_AboutConfig...SeaMonkeyAddNk...SeaMonkeyProfile).
I am receiving daily messages on my computer to the effect that
SeaMonkey has crashed. I have tried to chase down what might be causing
this endless string of problems without much success. Let me say,
however, that I suspect that my problem is associated with moving from a
32 bit software program to a 64 bit SeaMonkey program...this thinking is
based on the date that I changed from 32 to 64 bits SeaMonkey software.
Please note that I am currently writing this message on Thunderbird and
all is working properly with this software. Also, I am using Windows 10
for both SeaMonkey and Firefox/Thunderbird. Also, I have used Webroot
Secure Anywhere software on everything on my computer without any
problems being found.

With all of the above said, here is where I need your help. I have in
my mind that I must remove/reinstall SeaMonkey on my computer.

I have copied the three folders listed above in this message to a
different location on my computer...hopefully I will be able to fix any
problems that occur as a result of redoing my SeaMonkey software. Am I
correct?

You aren't getting asked when you log into a site for the first time?

I just logged into my mozillaZine account for the first time and was
asked if I wanted to save the username and password.

I should have told you where I was having my problem in my earlier
message.  The problem is...the first time I previously used a new
password on my system it would ask me if I wanted to save my password
(subsequently recorded in Password Manager if I click yes).  The
asking about saving new passwords no longer occurs. I'm trying to
understand why this is occurring and how to fix this problem.

FYI, Password Manager is a lifesaver to me when it comes my
forgetfulness of many things including passwords.

Saving passwords doesn't work for some websites, depending on how
they're coded.  Some web developers seem to consider that a feature and
deliberately do everything they can to stop password managers
recognising and filling in their password fields - it's almost like they
want you to reuse a short, easily remembered (and easily guessed)
password rather than one which is unique, complex and difficult to guess!

Thanks to all for your help. I believe I know one such web site that
does not want you to use a Password Manager for your
password...Facebook. I am ready to say Uncle on this one and put up
with what I have to do in order to use their software.

question I need your help/thoughts/recommendations on before
initiating this action.  (((Please remember that I am not very
computer technical smart and my questions will reflect my knowledge
level - my fear is possibly loosing everything on my computer.))) Here
are my questions:

---Will removing my current SeaMonkey software have any effect on my
Profile and/or my Accounts?

It shouldn't effect your Profile information, Frog but, just in
case, better safe than sorry ...

1.   Click 'Edit' the top left of your SeaMonkey Mail & Newsgroups screen
2.   Click 'Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings'. This should display
information about your Mail and News Accounts.
3.   Select 'Server Settings' on your e-mail account on the left of this
new screen.
4.   Write down the location mentioned in the 'Local directory:' line of
your e-mail account. This is where your e-mails (Inbox, Sent, etc.) are
stored.
5.   Do steps 3 and 4 for your "Local Folders" account and for each news
account you have set up. Also worth while writing down the newsrc file
location for each News account as well, if you wish.
6.   Completely close down SeaMonkey Browser, Mail & Newsgroup
Screen, EVERYTHING!!

7.   In your Windows 10, start up your Windows File Manager program
(Explorer, is it??) and navigate to the location you wrote down in Step
3 above.
8.   Copy that folder (and everything in it) to some other location as a
backup of your e-mail account.
9.   Do the same things (Step 7 and 8, above) for your "Local Folders"
account and for each on your News accounts.

So now that you have a basic back-up of your profile .

---Should I make a backup of my SeaMonkey folders (i.e. Address Book,
Inbox, etc.) before taking this action?

See above for most of this no copy of the addressbook made as yet!

10.  In your Windows File Manager program, do a search for 'Bookmarks'
(without the inverted commas) and look for a file called 'Bookmarks' (no
extension). Click on each one (newest one first, maybe) until you get a
screen that has similar web addresses as you would expect to find in
your SeaMonkey Browser screen.
11.  In your Windows Explorer, make a copy of your 'Bookmarks' file to a
similar location that you copied your Mail and News accounts.

---Will this action have any possible effect on my email messages
and/or user group messages?

Not normally, but if you make copies, as I directed above, all is
recoverable!

---Will this action possibly fix my problem of not being able to open
user group messages in SeaMonkey?

I don't know, Frog, I'm tending towards 'No', but, at the very least,
having copies of your e-mail and news accounts, and your Bookmarks can't
hurt, can it??

FYI, it has been a long time since my present software was installed
and there have been a number of updates since that time.  All updates
were allowed to write over my existing software...no start over new
has been involved for many years.

I welcome your advice on this subject.

Frog

See how you go, Frog, and report back!

Well, Daniel, I have copied (on my E Drive) all of the files included in
your message (I hope). In fact, I have three files on my E Drive that
are normally found on most user C Drives. The three files are:

SeaM_About Config - Dated 2011

SeaMonkey AddBk - Dated 2011

SeaMonkey Profile - Dated 2020

I wonder if either of the first two (2011) folders are of any value
today. All three these files, however, have been copied into a new
folder my E Drive. I did make a search elsewhere for a later address
book file, bookmark file, and a config file with no success. Could it
be that a later version of these 2011 folders, and the files I can't
seem to locate, are all included in the Profile folder that I did copy?

Again, I really appreciate your help.

The same settings in Thunderbird should work in SeaMonkey.

I'm almost happy at the moment...I can receive my email messages on
SeaMonkey.  I still don't know what made this happen...unless it was a
mistake I made while looking at "Preferences" in SeaMonkey.  I found
under "Preferences" three squares...one with Mail, another with News,

in my mail arena is the fact that I still can't open my news group

see the message text.  Without seeing the message text I don't know
what the message is all about and I need the message to be open in

Needless to say I am a happy person right now, and I can send/receive

on SeaMonkey...and I can continue to visit web pages on SeaMonkey. All

Frog

Frog, I don't know if my contribution will fix your situation ... but
you never know

At one stage, SeaMonkey was set up so that, once you had set up an
e-mail account, SeaMonkey would reason that any other account you set up
would HAVE TO BE a News account, so removed the possibility of setting
up another e-mail account, hence your not being able to, i.e. E-mail
account being greyed out!! (I don't know why you saw 'Feed' greyed out!!)

What you just stated makes sense to me in light of what I have
encountered during this thread and what I have to look forward to in the
coming days. Recapping a little here, I have two accounts (one titled
username@verizon and another AOL Account). I believe the one titled
usern...@verizzon.net is the one I am actually using to access my AOL
mail on SeaMonkey. The second one I think is a dud and probably should
be deleted...now I have to make sure of which one I am actually using
before deleting anything.

I can now see the subject line and message text of my AOL email messages
on SeaMonkey. I can also access - see the subject lines of the messages
of this newsgroup on SeMonkey. I cannot, however, open or respond to a
newsgroup message on SeaMunkey. My attempts to open a message results
in me seeing this message:

This link needs to be opened with an application.

___Remember my choice for news links.

 CancelOpen link

I have never been able to identify an application that will open the
messages on this newsgroup using SeaMonkey. My work around for this lack
of access to newsgroup messages is to open Thunderbird and all of my
messages become readable.

To change this situation, i.e. to allow you to set up a new E-mail
account, you need to get into your set-up and make a change

Be aware, Frog, that if you delete both your accounts on SeaMonkey,
you will be deleting all the e-mails you have sent and received on
those two accounts!

Least that's what happened to me! ;-(

I haven't been following this thread closely, but at this point, a
couple of thoughts...

Something that Frog might want to do is consider doing some playing in a
different user profile, rather than his current profile.  That way,
there's more capacity to experiment, without risking damage to existing
setups or data.

One way to do that would be to create a new profile in Seamonkey, and
try setting up a new connection there. The idea is to figure out the
mechanics of what works or not, where you're not trying to work around
your existing data.  Once you get that working, you can replicate those
settings in your normal profile.

Going a step further, consider the possibility of a temporary install of
Thunderbird -- its account setup wizard works pretty well (more
extensive than Seamonkey), and I've found that for most providers, all
it takes to get a workable connection is specifying your email address,
password and whether you want POP or IMAP, and the wizard is pretty good
about figuring out the rest of the settings. There are exceptions,
especially if a provider requires a different password for external
clients, as a way of doing a form of multi-factor authentication, but
absent that, the setup wizard should be able to do most of the work in
figuring things out. As with the suggestion above, once you have a
working connection, you can tweak your configs in Seamonkey to match.

However, it is possible that Verizon/AOL is doing something like
alternate password, and if so, the only source of information of how to
do your configs will be information that you get directly from them.  My
own mail provider does this, and when I was setting up my phone to be
able to check my mail, I found that they required me to do a one-time
configuration of a separate password that's used in a mail client
(although somehow, they seem to have grandfathered my long-time
connection in Seamonkey, where I've never had to adjust that.)

Item of caution: if you're working with a POP connections on a test
setup, before you commit to downloading mail from a server, I do
encourage you to check the advanced settings, to adjust the mail
retention preferences.  In Seamonkey, the default setting is to delete
mail from the server after it's downloaded, and if you're using a test
configuration, it's a good idea to set it to not delete from the server,
so that the test connection isn't grabbing mail that you want to go into
your normal mail.

Another consideration: if you're changing server names, it's generally
better to create a new account anyway, and not try to tinker with the
name in an existing account.  I have done that in the past, even in
changing providers, but the result is that you get a lot of messiness at
folder and file level within your user profile, and it's worse when you
have multiple accounts.  Some of the naming includes server names when
created, and if you're digging at that level, it can be really confusing
to be seeing old names that don't correspond with current usage.  With
this in mind, having a new account in place is probably a good idea.

As for making sure that you don't lose any of your mail archives, I
recommend either (or both) of the following:

1) Before you do any additional tinkering, make sure you get a backup of
your existing profile.  In Windows, you want to get the entire contents
of %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Seamonkey .  The AppData folder is normally hidden,
where you can't find it in the Windows explorer, but if you put that
path (with the environment variable) in the Explorer's address bar, it's
no problem to find.  And depending on what backup tool you use, some
allow you to use that construct in what you're including in your
backups.  For me, if I'm doing a data backup, besides all the normal
libraries in Windows, I include that designation, so that I get all my
Seamonkey data, and I do the same with my data for Firefox and
Thunderbird (%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox and %APPDATA%\Thunderbird,
respectively -- Thunderbird's designation is slightly different, for
some reason).

Even if you don't do this for your regular backups, getting a copy of
your Seamonkey data *somewhere* is a really good idea, even if you
simply copy %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Seamonkey to your Documents library.

2) If you anticipate the possibility of deleting your existing POP
account, copy all you mail data into Local Folders, where it can stay,
even if the account gets deleted. There's

You have a usern...@aol.com email account or are trying to use your

I can agree that I have an email address at AOL and it is

I made the changes you recommended and I am not able to access my AOL
mail from SeaMonkey. I attempted to download my email messages from AOL
after the changes were made and this is the error message I received:

Error with account f...@verizon.net
Request failed Mailbox unavailable. Please verify that your email
address is correct in your account settings and try again.

I have two accounts in SeaMonkey...one account is for my newsgroups and
browsing the internet. The second (titled AOL) account is used for
downloading email messages from AOL to SeaMonkey. I believe a select
look at the two accounts tells me that something is wrong between the
two accounts. Thus, I am sending select account settings for both
accounts for your review.

You have a usern...@aol.com email account or are trying to use your
usern...@verizon.net email address with AOL mail?

I can agree that I have an email address at AOL and it is
usern...@verison.net.  I agreed/selected some two years ago to retain
my original Verizon email address over a new AOL email address.  I
made this selection because I thought it would save me a lot of time
informing people about a new email address.  Also, I was uneasy about
my technical skill that I thought would be needed to change "things"
in my computer to make a new address work.  I'm not sure, in light of
my situation today, that I made a wise choice to continue to use my
Verizon address.  Bottom line..I have never had a usern...@aol.com
email address.

That won't work.

I'm not sure I understand what won't work.  I continue to use my
original usern...@verizon.net address when I send/retrieve my email
from AOL...and it continues to work in the AOL's mail system.

What won't work is trying to use the Verizon address with an
imap.aol.com or pop.aol.com server name in your configuration.

It should be.

Server Name: pop.verizon.net.
Port: 995
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication Method: Normal password

The outgoing SMTP server settings are:
Server Name: smtp.verizon.net
Port:465
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication Method: Normal password

That's what my settings are.

You probably have to resolve that Known Issue before you can create an
email account.

WOW!!! I entered the settings as you suggested and I can again
access this help page on SeaMonkey. I, however, cannot see the text of
the messages...all I see is the following when attempting to open a message:

Launch ApplicationX
This link needs to be opened with an application.
Send to:
Pick an app
Choose other ApplicationChoose...

___Remember my choice for news links.

Cancel Open link

Thus, I had to return to Thunderbird to make this message available for
reading the text of your message and being able to respond to your
message. When I click "Choose" on this small window I am taken to
another window titled "Another Application." When I click "Open link",
it takes me to a blank page with the same message documented above.

What is causing my messages open normally in SeaMonkey?

Thanks again for getting me this far in solving my SeaMonkey problems.

Have you read the SeaMonkey Known Issues and attmpted this fix.

After creating a news account through clicking a news URL, the MailNews
account wizard may be broken (the account type will always be News). To
work around the problem, set the mail.server.serverX.valid pref (where X
is the internal number of the corresponding news account) to true in
about:config, or delete the invalid news account (bug 521861).

No, I have not read the SeaMonkey Known Issues and attempted a fix. I
will do a search for SeaMonkey bug fixes and see if I can locate bug fix
521861. Hopefully I will find this item and that it communicates a fix I
can understand. As i stated in my response to Paul in Houston...I am
and user of a computer and have very limited technical computer skills.

Why can't you use SeaMonkey for newsgroups?

Simply put, I have attempted to access this mailgroup repeatedly and all
I get is a long period of a blank screen followed by a timed out
message. I can't download newsgroup messages, respond or create
messages when using SeaMonkey...it's as if it is dead.

I finally gave up on trying to find a fix for my problems and then set
up Thunderbird in an attempt to find guidance on how to make every thing
work once more.

I appreciate your help and I do apologize to you and all of the other
responders for my lack of responsiveness during my earlier cry for help
on this newsgroup. I was lost as to how to make my newsgroups work on
SeaMonkey...thus, I was fighting to keep my head above water at that
time. I am not much better of now than I was at that time...but I am
now able to access this newsgroup via Thunderbird.

Lets fix the NG access first because its easiest to fix.
You last accessed this NG with SM on Apr 17.
What have you changed since then to not able to access this group?

Paul, thanks for your response to my message.

The problem started when suddenly I decided to visit this support group.
I attempted to open this group and repeatedly received a small message
to the effect that my request had timed out. Then, I noticed that I
would receive this message without my checking my mail...it would pop up
on the screen without any action being taken. I assumed that it was
making normal checks for support group messages. Long story short, I
found that my actions taken to move from Verizon to AOL must have not
been correct...thus, I downloaded Thunderbird and Firefox and started
using it for accessing this support group. I personally believe that
Verizon suddenly did something that caused me to lose access to
everything except visiting web pages. This caused me to start using AOL
software (which I did install some two years ago when Verizon bought
AOL). I did not like the AOL mail system as much as I liked having my
mail on SeaMonkey (which continued to work until (I believe) Verizon
suddenly cut my access to everything except visiting web pages. That
forced me to use AOL for my mail.

That (I believe) was the cause of my many problems with SeaMonkey. I
had earlier tried to establish an AOL account on SeaMonkey. I got on
the internet looking for help...port numbers, server name, POP or IMAP,
and on to many other things I needed to know in order to make an attempt
to have an AOL account on SeaMonkey. I then decided to make an AOL
account on SeaMonkey. Well, another long story, I made several attempts
to make a workable account on SeaMonkey and was unsuccessful in all of
my efforts.

I thought one of my major problems with the new account was my email
address...I made a decision, when AOL came about, to continue to use my
original Verizon email address in AOL. This fact caused me many periods
of thought as to what should be in the account in order to make it
work...and nothing I did was a success.

I noted during this problem that my old Verizon account was my Default
account on SeaMonkey. I then decided to make AOL the default SeaMonkey
account. This act resulted in my losing all of my saved Verizon emails.
This action also had an effect on my AOL account...I lost all of my
AOL saved messages and was no longer able to access my AOL mail. At
this point, I once again reverted back to having my old Verizon account
as my Default account...with the result of being able to access my AOL
mail normally. I had a thought that my phone line is Verizon and
somehow that was a part of my problem...but later I decided that a phone
line is a phone line, and that wasn't a part of my problem.

I have read and printed items found on the internet that I thought would
make my efforts a success. I was at this point that I realized that
this old man (83) needed help with this problem. As noted in my
messages to the support group, I am looking for simple-to-follow
instructions as to how to achieve my goal.

At the moment, I have SeaMonkey on my system and it is only able to
perform as a browser of web pages. I have Firefox and Thunderbird on my
system that allows me to send this message and it performs as a browser.
I have AOL on my system and it allows me to access my mail (and likely
a number of other things that I haven't had time to explore). I have
used SeaMonkey for years and Netscape before that (back to 95). I feel
like I am at home when using SeaMonkey and that is why I wanted to use
it for all of my internet activities...user group, mail, and browser.

Bottom line, I continue to receive time-out messages on SeaMonkey while
attempting to visit this support group and when attempting take an
action involving my normal mail...visiting web pages is the only
SeaMonkey action that I can take without being confronted with the
time-out message,.

I now I want to continue using SeaMonkey in the same manner as I did
 while connected to Verizon.

All it is is a matter of adding an additional account to your current
configs.  Seamonkey has no difficulties with connecting with multiple
accounts and multiple providers.

All that's necessary is File -> New -> Account, and then follow the
prompts of the account setup wizard, and put in the necessary settings
for AOL.  Don't touch your Verizon account at all.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like you're a POP user. It's now
pretty common that providers presume IMAP, to allow for access from
multiple devices (and I think there may be a few providers that don't
even offer POP), but if you're using a single computer, there's no
reason that you can't continue to use POP, if you prefer it.

I'm not aware of any trickiness with AOL's setups. I do know that with
Gmail, there's their oAUTH system for authentication, and where you have
to configure Gmail for "less secure", because Seamonkey doesn't do
oAUTH.  In a similar way there's a growing number of providers that are
doing some form of multi-factor authentication. I know that my own
provider requires a setup of a separate password to use in an external
mail client -- it's not the same password used for login at their web
site. I'm guessing that AOL doesn't do that, but I could be wrong.

I know that I must take steps to configure things so that I continue
to have access to old Verizon messages, while adding new AOL messages
to this system (if that is possible).

Once you have the AOL connection working, all your Verizon messages are
still there, assuming that you're using POP. At that point, you can
drag-and-drop all the messages, either into your AOL account, or into
Local Folders. If your Verizon account is IMAP, then you should
drag-and-drop all your messages.  If the AOL account is IMAP, then
dragging into AOL will cause all your messages to be uploaded to AOL's
server.  If you move everything to Local Folders, then all the content
will be stored only on your local hard drive.

If your Verizon connection is POP, all your messages are there, and you
simply leave the Verizon account there (although you will want to adjust
the server settings for that account, so that Seamonkey isn't
automatically checking for new messages).

For what it's worth, in my own setups, I have content in my Local
Folders dating back close to 25 years, on accounts that were discarded
long ago, including on proprietary systems, where I was able to import
messages into Seamonkey.

For sure, I don't want to lose anything I previously saved on my
computer that originated via the Verizon days.

Just to be on the safe side, it is worth getting a backup of all your
data, but that's something that you should be doing as a part of your
routine backups.  In Windows, Seamonkey's data is in
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Seamonkey .  On my own system, I make sure that folder
is included in my daily backups, but before I'm doing something with
configurations (especially if I'm working at file/folder level), I make
sure I copy all that data to somewhere else on the computer.

I believe there will be a need to reconfigure MailWasher to work with
AOL.  This MailWasher software permits me to weed out unwanted
messages prior to downloading messages to my computer...I have found
this software helps to keep from introducing virus and malware
software on my computer.

There might be a tweak in your settings for MailWasher, where you need
to tell it about AOL's server.

However, I'm not convinced that you need MailWasher, and for more than
one reason.  The primary thing is that if you're moving to a new mail
address, spammers mostly won't know about the new address, and if you're
careful about not broadcasting your address to where the spammers can
pick it up, you may not see a lot of spam for MailWasher to handle.
Additionally, Seamonkey has native spam-handling capacity, in the same
way that Thunderbird does.

The Mozilla spam-handling tools may not be as robust as I would like but
they do work.  That won't prevent download, but a message recognized as
spam will be shunted to the Junk folder, where it can be easily
discarded, in the same way that you empty trash. However, any
user-trained filter needs a measure of training, and you have to watch
for both false positives and false negatives, and make corrections.
There's several ways to do that, but one way is right-clicking on a
message in a folder, and selecting Mark -> either "As Junk" or "As Not
Junk", and subsequent messages that are similar will be treated the same
way.

Seeing Messages Texts on the Screen

2020-04-16 Thread Frog
I am unable to see the text or messages on the newsgroup. I can see the
titles of messages and when I click on a message, I see this message:

___Remember my choice for news liks.
Cancel Open link

Why is this suddenly showing up on my screen? I have always simply
clicked on the subject line of a message and it automatically opened in
a new window. Isn't opening mail in SeaMonkey a programmed part of the
mail system?

I don't know whether I will be able to open your response ... I hope so
as I am having some problems with my computer. Once I cure this
problem, I will be seeking help with my other problem(s).

Setting up my computer with a new ISP...while not loosing data on my system setup.

2020-04-11 Thread Frog
Some you have given me much help with an earlier thread relating to
this the subject of this message...Subject: Not able to send messages.

Here is a list of things I must learn about to make the change from
Verizon to AOL> ISP.

I now I want to continue using SeaMonkey in the same manner as I did
while connected to Verizon.

I know that I must take steps to configure things so that I continue to
have access to old Verizon messages, while adding new AOL messages to
this system (if that is possible).

For sure, I don't want to lose anything I previously saved on my
computer that originated via the Verizon days.

I believe there will be a need to reconfigure MailWasher to work with
AOL. This MailWasher software permits me to weed out unwanted messages
prior to downloading messages to my computer...I have found this
software helps to keep from introducing virus and malware software on my
computer.

Have I forgotten anything?

I will continue using the same Verizon email address on the AOL system.

I would welcome any help or guidance with the above that comes my way.

Some time ago I was required to move my server support to AOL from

and then I was told that I had a general help desk and that I needed to
talk to a technician,  This person then proceeded to tell me that I
could not speak to a technician until I purchased a technical support

the only way to get technical help...he then offered my the first 30

the technical support plan before the end of the 30 day period. Well I
wsthen on hold for another 3 hours when I finally got to speak to a
technician.  He said that he was going to have to delete all messages in
my Inbox, Drafts, and Trash before he could work on the problem. He
wanted to know whether I had a data backup plan...and I said no.  the
then said that I needed to backup these files before he did any work on

on the phone yesterday evening waiting for 3 hours for somebody to help
me...I was then cot off and got a recorded message that the office was
closed for the day and that I could get help from the AOL help pages,)

A long story for no help.

I can receive downloads on my computer without any problem.  I can click
on web addresses and they work.  Another action that did occur during my
talk with the AOL technician was one of his showing me that a message
could be sent through AOL and that it would work..and it did.  Thus, the
only thing not working on my computer is sending email messages via
SeaMonkey or Mozilla.

I would appreciate any help you send my way on this subject.

Well, I now have the answer to all of the items covered in this thread
and now must start on a new thread. I am going to bore you for a moment
in order to help someone else who might be going through the problems I
have been facing. So here goes the end of this thread:

Part 1: I really thought that I was dealing with a virus or malware on
my computer; but I didn't want accept this thought, since I have had my
present virus scan software (WebRoot) on my system for years; and it has
never let me down. As I stated in one of my messages, I did want to
weed a virus or malware possibility out of the picture...thus, I did a
complete scan of my entire system (6.5 hours of scanning); and no bad
things were found on my system. I then sent a message to the WebRoot
people, and they had me forward the results of my scan to them for
analysis. They informed me, after their scan was completed, that my
system did not have a virus or malware problem...it was completely
clean. They suggested that I contact Verizon (which remains a part of
my email address) for help. I thought about it and decided that a
conversation with Verizon might take less that a few minutes; however,
the wait to talk to somebody might take hours of waiting. I then turned
to the internet for help.

Part 2: The second part pertains to what I found on the internet. Here
is that information:

Verizon Email Retirement
"Verizon has retired our (their) email service. We have completed our
notifications regarding this change; and customers no longer have the
option to keep their Verizon.net email address or extract and move their
data to another service provider.(((I don't recall ever receiving a
notification as stated above.)))
Here is the web address where you might want to read more about this

Thanks for helping this 83 yr old beginner level technician solve a
problem with his out-going mail situation. Here is what my Mail &
Newsgroup Account Settings > Server Settings are:

Verizon
Server type - POP Mail Server
Server Name: smpt.verizon.net Port:995 Default:995
User Name: My complete email address is listed here.
Security Settings
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method Normal password

AOL
Server type - POP Mail Server
Server Name: mail.aol.com Port:995 Default:995
User Name: My complete email address is listed here.
Security Settings
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method Password transmitted insecurely

Please Note: Both settings have worked for a year, and the Verizon setup
suddenly stopped working.

-

The following (to the best of my ability to explain) is the answer to
"We don't know what Frog is trying to do." Simply put, I am trying to
recover my ability to send messages by-way-of Verizon. Here is a little
more information on that subject.

I have two methods for my mail...Verizon and AOL The AOL setup on my
computer occurred when AOL was purchased by Verizon...I was a long time
Verizon customer when this event occurred. I continued to use my old
Verizon set-up for 99% of my activity on the internet...AOL is used only
when Verizon is not working properly---like now. I an not able to send
my personal messages thru the Verizon system for unknown reasons...that
is what I'm trying to solve at this time. All other Verizon functions
have not been affected by this outgoing mail situation until yesterday
evening. We are now getting the "timed out message when we attempt to
download our regular mail. In fact, this message will pass thru the
Verizon mail setup. Until yesterday evening, I received all of my
incoming mail via Verizon as I have always done in the past. This
sudden loss of capability was not as a result of any changes I made to
my system.

I noted as I attempted to send a message via Verizon that it suddenly
asked me for my password...when I typed that into the appropriate blank,
it would immediately give me a second message that "Connection to server
smpt.verizon.net timed out". Later on, this same message suddenly
appeared when I was not involved in sending a message. At this point, I
decided to do a complete virus scan of my computer (6.5 hours) and the
scan found no problems. Well, I am now back to looking at my account
setup. I have many questions as to whether establishing a new account
will cause me to lose all of my Inbox/Saved messages etc. Should I put
them in a safe place before taking such an action? I'm also in the
process of researching exactly what steps must be taken to make this a
successful action.. Also, I'm not sure if my making a new setup using
the same information presently used would change anything. I am very
uneasy to take any first step to solve this problem when the outcome
could introduce more problems.

Well, I believe that covers what my problem is and what my goal is...I
want to be able to send and receive messages via my Verizon account.
Let me know if you would like more details/information.

Frog

P.S. I have noticed the time out message showing up in more and
different places.

I now am receiving a constant stream of messages that reads as follows:

SMTP server timed out

I started to searching for an answer for why this message continued to
show up. I found one message that lead me to believe that some type of
bug was resident on my computer. I then decided to use my virus scan
(Webroot Secure Anywhere) to find the problem. I started the complete
computer scan and some six and a half hours later it informed me that no
problems were found. Thus, back to looking for another possible answer
for my sick computer. I did not find anything having to do with
SeaMonkey, but I did find an item that seemed somewhat similar to the
problem I am having (but involving Thunderbird) That article is "Can't
Send Email: "SMTP Server Timed Out in Thunderbird" Error":

My going to my Verizon mail system seems to activate this problem.

See if you can logon to AOL web mail with it.  If not, follow their

I have come to a conclusion...I believe Verizon has lost my password.  I
am noticing that I am constantly being asked for my password when
sending a message via verizon.net.  Even when I give them my password,
the message fails to send.  Now I've got a new challenge...how do I get
Verizon on board with my password.  Any help would be appreciated.
Frog

Lost? Your email account might have been hacked like mine was a month ago.

See if you can logon to AOL web mail with it. If not, follow their
guidelines for a lost or stolen password to reclaim your account.

Dave

My AOL account and my Verizon account have have always had two different
passwords. My Verizon mail is the one I can't access to send a message.
The AOL account will now let me send email messages.

Looks good to me. It is what works in my Thunderbird's.

Did you get a password prompt, entered the password and still
can't send an email?

Yes, I did get the password prompt request and I did enter my
password---same results.

Try port 587 which is STARTTLS, I saw that in a site telling people
how to use Thunderbird with AOL.  If that does not work then you
fall back to 465 = SSL/TLS, which is what the other similar sites
were suggesting.
I have several accounts and the split is 50% : 50% between the two
variations.

I changed the port number to 587 as you suggested...the default
remained 465.  I attempted so send myself a message with the same
results.  I then (leaving the change in place) decided to change the
Server Name from smpt.verizon.net to smpt.aol.com.  I tried to send
an email test message to myself.  It appeared that the message was
sent...the message never showed up in my inbox.  I decided at this
point to restore things back to the original setting pending
conformation of my actions.

It looks like I got things backward, if you set "Connection security"
to STARTTLS then the Port gets set to 587 automatically.  Setting it
back to SSL/TLS reverts to 465.  That may be irrelevant if you managed
to send a message successfully, do you have another victim you could
send a message to and then ask if they got it?
Assuming you have managed to work out if you can send messages or not,
you can start looking at the input side of things.  I sent you a long
response to your mozilla.general post a day or so, if you can't
retrieve messages you could have a look at that.
I have several email addresses so it is a lot easier to check what is
not working.

I made the change you suggested (i.e. Changing the "Connection security"

Not able to send messages.

2020-04-07 Thread Frog

As you probably noticed in one of my earlier messages, I sent a Test
message to see if I was able to send a help message to this group. That
message seemed to make it to this address. Thus I am now going to state
my problem and hope somebody comes to my rescue.

Some time ago I was required to move my server support to AOL from
Verizon. I made all of the changes at that time and all has bee working
without a problem until now...I presently cannot send a normal email
message from my computer via SeaMonkey (mainly) or from Mozilla, All
such attempts ends with a message as follows:

Outgoing server (SMTP) Server Password Required

box - Use Password Manager to remember the password.
OK _ Cancel_

I Have not made any changes to any settings in either SeaMonkey or
Mozilla since they originally set a long while ago. I then typed in my
password and this is the next message that appeared.

Login to account failed
Login to server smtp.verizon.net with username .failed.

I then clicked cancel and got this message.

SeaMonkey Message - Test
Status: Connected to smtp.verizon.net
Progress
Cancel

The green bar after Progress never closes, so I clicked Cancel.

I called AOL today and (after waiting for over 2 hours on the phone
waiting for a human to pick up the phone, and another almost 3 hours
today before someone picked up the phone. I told them about my problem
and then I was told that I had a general help desk and that I needed to
talk to a technician, This person then proceeded to tell me that I
could not speak to a technician until I purchased a technical support
plan ($14.99). After some wrangling, He said that having this plan was
the only way to get technical help...he then offered my the first 30
days free. I gave in knowing that I needed help and that I could cancel
the technical support plan before the end of the 30 day period. Well I
wsthen on hold for another 3 hours when I finally got to speak to a
technician. He said that he was going to have to delete all messages in
my Inbox, Drafts, and Trash before he could work on the problem. He
wanted to know whether I had a data backup plan...and I said no. the
then said that I needed to backup these files before he did any work on
my system. That is where he stopped helping me. (((Please note, I was
on the phone yesterday evening waiting for 3 hours for somebody to help
me...I was then cot off and got a recorded message that the office was
closed for the day and that I could get help from the AOL help pages,)

A long story for no help.

I can receive downloads on my computer without any problem. I can click
on web addresses and they work. Another action that did occur during my
talk with the AOL technician was one of his showing me that a message
could be sent through AOL and that it would work..and it did. Thus, the
only thing not working on my computer is sending email messages via
SeaMonkey or Mozilla.

I would appreciate any help you send my way on this subject.

Windows 10 - SeaMonkey 2.531

I'm receiving the above message when trying on sea monkey to access fox

Try HTTPS instead of HTTP.

If you click the link, it does show HTTPS.

The address in my address book has https, and that is the way it was
entered. The access denied message came back showing http...thus, I
tried entering it manually with the s added and the result was another
access denied message as http. It seemed very strange to me that only
the foxnews web page was the only web page that was giving me this
message. I then used my WEBOOT software against the whole system and no
problems were identified. Once I allowed CC Cleaner to remove the
cookies and Internet Cache from my systen I entered the foxnews address
as I do normally and everything worked as usual. I do not know why
firefox/foxnews was not affected by anything from the start and only
seamonkey was affected (the same computer/operating system was used
throughout this access denied situation). Presently, both firefox and
seamonkey are working normally, and that makes me very happy.

I hope this information is helpful to those who responded to my help
needed message.

Is this happening with e-mails you send via a Verizon SMTP server? If
so, here's what I wrote about it a couple months ago[1]:

If this is what I think it is, it should only happen when you use

Try setting (for example, in about:config) the mail.strictly_mime

I think I know the answer to my question before I ask it; but here goes

time.  At times my mail will show up in the window designated "AOL -

SeaMonkey".  I desire to have all of my mail show up in the "Inbox -
Local Folder - SeaMonkey" window.

Is there some way to temporarily remove default from the "AOL -
SeaMonkey" mail program?  I would like to take this step prior to
removing the AOL - SeaMonkey from my system...thus letting me have some
assurance that all of my mail is ending up in the "Inbox - Local Folder
- SeaMonkey" folder.

My operating system is Windows 10 with the latest version of SeaMonkey.

Frog

I think you really have only one E-mail application but with more than
one account.  What you need to do is create a filter that moves incoming
AOL account messages to the Inbox of your Local Folder.

If E-mail messages continue to be addressed to you at AOL, you do not
want to remove the AOL account.  Wait at least until you have an account
at another E-mail host and have notified all your correspondents of your
new E-mail address.

Actually, I strongly recommend that you purchase a personalized domain
and use that for your E-mail.  Personalized domains do not cost much;
mine costs less than $10 per year.  After notifying all your
correspondents of your your new E-mail address with that domain, you
will never have to do that again if you ever again change your E-mail
host.  Just be careful (1) to renew your domain before it expires and
(2) only use E-mail hosts that do not allow you to use your own domain
(there are a few).

Thanks for your help David...it has been a while since you came to my aid.

I think I need to do some clarification of my situation with my email
setup.  This may get a bit long, but I don't know how else to give you a
picture of my problem and what I am trying to solve...so here goes-

Verizon was my long-time ISP.  A while back, I was notified that my
account was being handed over to AOL.

I only have one account and all of my Verizon mail previously ended up
in my single SeaMonkey Inbox folder.

Then along came AOL to foul up my happy home.  I created a new AOL
method for accessing my mail.  I can't remember how I set this access
up, but it does not (as far as I can see) appear in the Add/Remove
Programs listing...just as an ICON on my Desktop.

I have two entries under This PC as follows
This PC > W7_64BIT (C) > Program Files > SeaMonkey > jsloader (((jsloder
is an empty folder))), and a second entry as follows
This PC > W7_64BIT (C) >Program Files (x86) > SeaMonkey (folder with a
number of sub folders and files attached).

I have used another program (MailWasher Pro) for years that permits me
to review my mail in my ISP account before downloading wanted mail to my
INBOX...unwanted mail is deleted before my mail is forwarded to my INBOX).

It seems like everything was working just fine when I was connected to
Verizon.  The addition of the AOL SeaMonkey connection has some of my
mail showing up in my old SeaMonkey setup and some in my new AOL
setup...not the way I want it (I want everything in my one and only
original SeaMonkey INBOX).

I noticed today that both my old Verizon setup and the new AOL setup
employs SeaMonkey as my access to my mail...and both are designated as
default.

Now what I am inclined to do is as follows:

Remove this entry from the Program Files listing:
This PC > W7_64BIT (C) > Program Files > SeaMonkey > jsloader (((Jsloder
is an empty folder)))

Amend the desktop entry as follows:

Change the Identification for the desktop ICON from AOL (7) to AOL Mail

Change (under the properties for this ICON) the URL from
https://mail.aol.com.webmail-std/en-os/suite
to
https://xyzmail.aol.com.webmail-std/en-os/suite

I am contemplating consideration of the above changes as a way of
overcoming two separate SeaMonkey programs, both operating as default,
as a way to see if all of my mail once again shows up in my original
SeaMonkey INBOX.  If it works, I will then delete the AOL Mail ICON from
the desktop.

I told you that it was going to get a little long, but I tried to
communicate my situation the best I know how.

I look forward to your response when you have time.

Thanks again for your help.

Frog

P.S. I just thought of another possibility for solving my problem...and
that is, make sure that I am not signed in to my AOL account when
downloading mail.

Actually, I strongly recommend that you purchase a personalized domain
and use that for your E-mail.  Personalized domains do not cost much;
mine costs less than $10 per year.

Oopsie.. the reviewer left off the bit about how the 'German institute

You left off the part that the Webroot Secure Anywhere Security doesn't

Tanks to all (WaltS4, Paul in Houston, TX, and Lee) for your words of

I thought it was a bad thing to have two virus scan applications active

You may try uninstalling MailWasher ...

I think...I hope the solution to my problem has been found. I contacted
AOL about my situation...mainly I asked if a filter was placed on my
mail. Here is what they said...

Please note that these situations often occur when an email filter is
preventing all incoming emails from reaching the Inbox folder. These
filters are usually changed when an AOL account was hacked or compromised.

To resolve this, we have reset the server settings associated to your
account that may have been changed if your account was compromised and
you should be receiving emails normally from now on. Please sign out and
back in for the changes to take full effect.

So far, with fingers crossed, I am once again receiving incoming
messages with attachments in my inbox. I know of no hacking or
compromise of my account...or that any filter was ever placed on my account.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Okay more confused by that. How can your "Inbox located at my CPA"? Do
you mean another email account, IMAP, physically somehow, ...?

I received an email message from my CPA that had two attachments. I got

Next, after not knowing the password for my Inbox, I got in touch with

Create a new folder, name it something like 'Inbox, needs attention' --

Frog, is it possible that you recently moved your e-mail account data
from one computer to another using CD's?? If so, this usually results in
the files being marked as "Read Only" so SM, logically, is unable to
write to those files.

Yes, my inbox files have been routinely moved from my older computers to
newer ones...starting from the old Netscape days to today. This is what
caused me to think it was a good time to do a royal house cleaning of my
Inbox...a very time consuming process to say the least. I still believe
it should be possible to re-designate my present Inbox message folder to
"Old" and open a new folder. Is it possible to take this type of action
and how do I do this? I think the process I am following now will be
complete some time around my 100th birthday.

In Windows Explorer, locate your e-mail account and right click on one
of the files/folders and check its Properties is not set to "Read Only".

I was moved from Windows 7 to Windows 10 some months ago...I now
understand that Windows Explorer in now File Explorer. If so, I am not
sure how to get to get to my e-mail account to click on one of the
files/folders. I can go to File Explorer and can find Inbox listed
there...but I can't figure out how to enter the Inbox to see
incoming/outgoing etc. under this heading like I once could under
Windows Explorer. I think that the messages are not Read Only, however,
as they appear as a mixture of Read and Not Read in SeaMonkey when I am
in am using the Inbox. In any event, I was unable to follow the Windows
Explorer path you suggested.

I don't think so, unless disk space is exhausted where inbox lives.

Everything was working just fine until I was recently moved from Verizon

I have to think it could well be related. Many individual spams are getting
awfully big. AOL's inbox space might not be big enough to hold messages for the
specified length of time. If she's leaving messages on server for 30 days, try
cutting back to 10 or 14. Check with AOL if inbox size can be increased.

If none are being left on server yet AOL inbox is full, something must be wrong
either with SM or AOL.

I have two POP mail accounts, one set to leave on server 11 days, the other 25.
The one set to 11 is using about 25MB. The one set to 25 is only using about
5MB, but I just reduced it from around 37MB by deleting all emails 3 digits
large, which were running e.g. 159, 164, 241 & 316 KB.

How often does she compact folders? I do it daily. If she never does, maybe
doing it is overdue, especially if triple digit spams have been routinely
reaching it.

Thanks Felix for your reply. I do check my mail several times a day so
I don't think the build-up is located at AOL. As I stated earlier, my
preferences are set to remove my messages from my ISP when they are
downloaded to my computer. I have resolved that my problem must have to
do with the volume of messages stored in my Inbox...thus, I am now in
the throws of doing a thorough house cleaning of my Inbox. I hope this
going to solve my problem.

Well, I kept trying (using an older version of Internet Explorer) until

In the past, AOL required that users install AOL's own E-mail
application because AOL's servers did not comply with either IMAP or
POP3/SMTP. This might no longer be the case. I am not familiar with
IMAP setups. If you are attempting to use POP3/SMTP, however, you might
try the following:

1. Open the Account Settings window. On the Thunderbird menu bar, that
is [Tools > Account Settings]. On the SeaMonkey menu bar, that is
[Window > Mail & Newsgroups] and then [Edit > Mail & Newsgroups Account
Settings].

2. On the left side of the Account Settings window, select the mail
account in question. If the account is collapsed, expand it. (In
Thunderbird, that involves selecting the > to make it a v.)

3. Select Server Settings.

4. On the Server Settings pane, for "Connection security" (under
Security Settings), select SSL/TLS from the selection list.

5. Go to the bottom of the left side of the Account Settings window.
(This might require scrolling down.) Select Outgoing Server (SMTP).

6. In the window that lists your E-mail accounts, select the mail
account in question and then select the Edit button.

7. In the SMTP Server window, for "Connection security" (under Security
and Authentication), select SSL/TLS from the selection list.

8. Select the OK buttons to close all the setup windows.

If you still have a problem receiving (steps 2-4) or sending (steps 5-7)
E-mail, try STARTTLS in place of SSL/TLS. I have one E-mail account
where sending is STARTTLS but receiving is SSL/TLS. Thus, you should
change only the setting for the one direction that remains a problem.

Tanks David for coming to my rescue. I checked all of the settings
included in your message and I am not able to send a test message to

without the cable being connected to the computer and the router. I

Here is what happens when I click send and wait some number of seconds
for the message go to my ISP.

New is displayed as follows:
Login Failed
? Login to server smtp.version.net failed.
Retry_ Enter new Password_ Cancel_

Retry ends with some additional seconds passing and the same message as
above reappearing.

Entering my password starts the send process over ending with the Login
Failed window reappearing.

In that case, you have an authentication failure -- the password you're
sending is not exactly the password the server wants to see.
Double-check every character, and remember that it's case sensitive --
"Password" is different from "password" is different from "PaSsWoRd."
And punctuation must also match exactly. Computers are stupid -- they
only see what you did type, not what you meant to type.

If SeaMonkey is remembering the password for you, you can see it here:

Click the button "Show Passwords" at the lower right and tell SM yes,
you really do want to show them (it'll go back to hiding them as soon as
you close the window). Then enter "verizon" in the search window at
upper left and you should see several entries, one of them like this:

smtp://smtp.verizon.net (smtp://smtp.verizon.net) yourusername
yourpassword ...

You may find it convenient to type out the password in Notepad so you
can see it and double-check it; then copy/paste it when SM prompts you
during the sending process.

If this doesn't work, double-check with your ISP what password their
SMTP server wants to see. It might not be what you think it is.

Good News...I can now send messages again. I decided to return to
Verizon for another settings verification. Another check of my system
(by the Verizon tech) found nothing wrong with my settings. The tech
told me up front that she had little knowledge or experience with
SeaMonkey or Thunderbird. After a number of small Account Setting
changes in the Thunderbird Account Settings...followed each time by a
failed attempt to send a message, she decided to change the the User
Name from my e-mail address (f...@verizon.net (not my real e-mail
address) to just frog (deleting @verizon.net). Another test message was
sent and it worked. She then made the same change to my SeaMonkey
Account Settings and it now works.

I'm not sure what made this change necessary on three separate computers
(not networked) at the same time. I believe something was changed at
Verizon that caused this problem from the start.

Thanks to all for your help and guidance. You pointed me in the right
direction to solve my problem.

My amateur fix-it skills tells me that my problem may be located at my
ISP. What should or can I do to fix this send message problem?

If different computers and different programs are affected, it's
probably not the computers or their settings -- unless they both
installed the same update.

It's most likely some change to your ISP's SMTP configuration or
settings. For example, they may suddenly require a different form of
security or authentication than they did before. Ask the tech to specify
all the settings they currently require for OUTgoing mail (SMTP):

• Server name (make sure spelling and punctuation are exactly correct)
• Port (three-digit number such as 465)
• Connection security (None, STARTTLS, SSL/TLS)
• Authentication method (None, normal password, encrypted password,
Kerberos/GSSAPI, NTLM, Oauth2)
• Username (usually your full email address, but some ISPs prefer just
the prefix)

I again got in contact with my ISP as you suggested. The technician did
several things during this call as follows:

-He took control of my computer while I watched what he was doing.
-He then checked all of my setting for SeaMonkey and Thunderbird. All
of these settings were found to be the right settings.
-He then added a new browser to my system (the same one that was added
during my earlier visit with my ISP). It again worked without any problems.
-He then attempted to send a test message via SeaMonkey and then
Thunderbird. Neither of these attempts worked.
-He then added Windows Live Mail to my system. This browser worked
subsequent to installing the appropriate settings.
-He rechecked all of my SeaMonkey and Timberline settings and assured me
that they were all correct.
-He then told me that there was nothing more he could do to help me with
my problem. It was his opinion that my problems are being caused by the
SeaMonkey and Timberline software.

These settings can be found at Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
| Outgoing Server (SMTP), at the very bottom of the list of accounts.
Choose your SMTP server and click "Edit." Click "OK" when done to save
the new settings, or "Cancel" to discard them.

If they offer a choice between tighter and looser security, ask for the
settings for tighter security; it's better for your privacy.

If you use two or more SMTP servers, make sure each of your mail
accounts points to the correct one (some ISPs accept mail only from
their own subscribers).

I only use one SMTP server.

Under Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings

| , select the Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the
dialog. As a test, you might also try switching to a different SMTP
server to see if you can send mail through that one.

A temporary browser sending messages by webmail isn't a solution, it's a
workaround. It doesn't use SMTP.

Now I am stuck with SeaMonkey and Timberline not working. I have two
thoughts as what actions to take next. The actions are:
-Remove/re-install SeaMonkey and/or Thunderbird software from my system
(VIA the Add/Remove process). Of course I would allow the remove process
to leave files when asked.
-Check to see if an update was made to my WebRoot software that might
have caused this problem.

I'm lost after these actions. Any help/suggestions?

Thanks again for all of your help over the years.

for the message go to my ISP.

New is displayed as follows:
Login Failed
? Login to server smtp.version.net failed.
Retry_ Enter new Password_ Cancel_

Retry ends with some additional seconds passing and the same message as
above reappearing.

Entering my password starts the send process over ending with the Login
Failed window reappearing.

Cancel leads to the following message:
Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP)
smtp.verizon.net for an unknown reason. Please verify that your
Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again. OK_

I am then left with my unsent message staring at me.

P.S. What's this program "Timberline" you keep mentioning? Sounds like a
ski resort... ;-)

OOPS(with a red face)my bad memory is showing again. Age will do that
you know. Timberline should be Thunderbird.

I did try another attempt to send my message and it also failed. I
turned off my virus scan software (Webroot) before sending the message
and got the same results as before.
