RE: [vintagvw] Valve spring retainer keepers. gone missing?

2013-04-17 Thread bill may
Did or does the two keepers touch at both splits when keepers installed on
valve? If keepers touch at both sides then this can cause this. Sometimes is
good to remove a slight amount of metal to ensure it does not happen.
Looking at inside of keeper at grooves you can see sides of keeper going 90
degrees to ribs that fit in grooves at valve stem. Those sides must not
touch as it means keepers are loose on grooves of valve stem and not getting
full engagement. I don't know how to explain it any other way.

I took my head to a local VW guy (not a machinist), he checked out the head.
The valve guides are good and all the other valves are good too.

The bad valve was stripped of its grooves for some reason. I'm just going to
replace the one valve. While I hate to ask for advice and not take it, the
local guy feels confident this will work. He and the VW mechanic turned high
school science teacher have both had bad experiences with machine shops and
VW heads.

But wait! Does the valve need grinding, or at least lapping.

Now, I need to decide how far to go with this.

1. buy an intake valve and keepers and replace just the bad one.

2. Buy a set for all valves in both heads and rebuild them myself.

3. Send heads to a machine shop for rebuild.

4. buy one or two heads.

Do you have the adjusters going direct onto valve stem? Or are there caps

I have ball foot swivel adjuster and there doesn't appear to be any
difference from that valve to its neighbors. The contact area at the end of
the valve stem also appears undamaged. It looks like a ring of material is
missing from the end just shy of the end.
When I applied the compressed air to the cylinder and compressed the spring,
the keepers did not move from the retainer. I'm hoping when I take off the
head I can compress it enough to remove them.
I have the engine out now and will pull of the head when I get a chance. But
first its time to familiarize myself with the manual.

Dean
p.s. I honestly didn't know I had ball adjusters. I'm thinking its a good
thing I did, any further wear on the ends of that valve and the cylinder
would have eaten it for sure.

Subject: [vintagvw] 1600DP running issues

Hey guys,
I have a friend who a few months ago purchased a very clean 70,000 mile 73
super beetle from an original owner a few months ago. The car had just been
serviced bya local shop to pass our local emissions testing(Aircare or as I
like to call it airscare!).

Soon after she purchased it it started suffering some running issues.
It has a replacement Empi 34 pict 3 I believe and what appears to be a
009 Distributor(What I remember from my last 1600dp. Mind you I haven't
played with one since about 2006...)

Anyways the issues that were going on it was stalling when it was cold. It
would fire up fine and she would take off and as soon as she would return to
idle it would stall. Which sounds like a total carb icing issue. To address
that it got a new intake manifold and a new muffler. Which didn't fix it.
Also it started developing a backfire through the carb on shut down. And
hard to start when warm. also a intermittant misfire mid range in the
revs. The disty cap is nearly new. Rotor looks okay.. Certainly not new a
bit grungy but not totally burned ..

Its had plugs, wires etc. When I was looking at the aircare sheet . The
hydrocarbons were high, and I'm certain its running rich. My gut feeling on
this one is that the carb is way out of adjustment and that the timing is
way out to lunch. I checked it for exhaust leaks and none were apparent...
Any thoughts? Its been a long time since I played with this stuff And
well my next venture is with a stroker so thats bound to be entertaining..

Cheers,
Kirin

Hello,

I cannot imagine why any shipper would put the shift rod bushing on
the shaft (the 'hockey stick') coming out of the gearbox/transmission. That
rod is thinner too, so may not accept the bushing due to a loose sloppy fit.

The shift rod bushing would go on the long shift rod lever. I do not
think that this longish piece (approx 3 foot in length I believe??) would be
included with any rebuilt trans.

I guess the plastic part is for protection during shipping only. That
said, I think it prudent to post a snap for all to see before you go around
removing anything.

Best of luck,

 Hi, Dean,

Is it hard off-white nylon? With a round locking ring?

Can't tell for sure, but it sounds like your shift-rod bushing. It goes
 into the hole in the bulkhead just aft of the shifter; the ring locks it;
and it keeps the shift rod from rattling, scraping, binding, etc. A little
 universal grease won't hurt it.

Is this a shipping thing or should it stay on? I've never seen a clean

The lube of choice for speedo cables is actually molybdenum powder. But it's
hard to get it where it needs to go. At your local farm and home store or a
real hardware store, they should carry spray cans of something called 'chain
lube' or 'roller chain lube' in the lubricant section. This stuff is
molybdenum disulphide powder in a volatile carrier that lets it get into the
crevices or down the cable or into the speedo. It's messy, though, if you
splatter it all around- black and nasty looking.

 Volks,

As the temperature dropped, there arose a loud singing or rattly
whine from the speedometer in my '70 bug. Since getting access to the
speedometer's backside is a PITA in my car (lots of siren relays,
cables, flashers, etc., ahead of it) I'm trying to see what I'm in
for. The whine increases in frequency and loudness with increasing
speed, and drops to silent when I'm under, say, about 5 mph.

Is it probably a (a) cable problem, requiring replacement of the
cable, (b) cable housing problem (maybe a little lubricant squirted
down the cable jacket?), or (c) a problem inside the speedometer itself (a
 Euro km/h unit)?

Any advice before I begin digging?

Volks,

The European-delivered 1968-on 1300 and 1500 beetles came standard with
front disk brakes; the USA models didn’t get them until later. I’m
considering converting my 1970’s front stock drums to the closest
approximation of Euro stock disks that I can get. Several questions.

Mid-America offers a “Standard Beetle Conversion” kit (their No. 301-911)
for $369, including new rotors and calipers, reconditioned spindles, and new
wheel bearings, hardware and seals. They also have some other conversion
options, including some with drop spindles, etc. (that I don’t want).

I’d like to hear from anybody who’s tried this. (a) Would this be the best
counterfeit of factory-stock front disks? Are there better kits out there
for a “stock conversion”? (b) Is it an easy conversion, as the catalog
suggests? (Is it a “driveway job” would be my question.) (c) What effect
do they have on performance? (d) Does anybody have a better
recommendation? I’m open to ideas… .

Bert, I just picked up a complete beam off a 69 KG, then took off the spindles
and brake assemblies. They bolted right on to my 70 beetle with NO problems.
There was nothing to jury-rig or convert. Easiest changeover I ever did, and
all german standard VW stuff. Then I put bigger wheel cylinders on the back of
my bug for even more stopping power. Bill May told me to put front wheel
cylinders on the back as they are bigger, will provide better and more balanced
stopping with the new front disc brake system. I just put the ones off my bug I
had just removed, on the back. Excellent advice.

NQ's discussion topic on engine building brings up an old question that I'm
sure has been answered many times but now that I'm looking at an engine
build, I want to ask it again.

I remember quite a number of years ago when there were a number of recipes
for engines depending on the desired outcome, performance or longevity and
those that strike a good balance.

My daughter's 1974 standard with its original 1600 DP and ?? miles is in
need of a rebuild. It spent most of its life in the Texas/Oklahoma area so
the body is in excellent shape and I want to put a fresh rebuild in it that
strikes that performance/longevity balance. I'd like to keep the PICT-34
carb with SVDA and CompuFire but possibly add some pep.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

why not build a 2332 single port engine??? or even better for climbing

 engine 2 liter?

Okay now I'm intrigued Bill. How do you go about building a 2332 SP. Are
you serious or joking with me here? Do they make larger SP heads for such
an application?

My gripes with the DTM Type 4 engine is that I can't have a thermostat. I
think that is pretty serious stuff as far as engine longevity goes. Also, I
gotta have a choke. I see why high performance VWs are favoured in southern
California and the Southwest because you don't have to fight cold weather
starting. The other thing is to add a primer like an aircraft has and start
it off of that and hope you don't flood it out. If I can come up with a
higher performance engine that has some really great grunt to get going and
then can maintain 65 to 70 on the highway, I'll be set.

Please elaborate on your SP comment. If you're not joking, where do I get
SP heads and an intake that will flow to match the displacement?

Don't know much about supers but sounds like it could be a 73 model? That

Subject: [vintagvw] Weird Super Beetle

Hey gang. Been a long time since I've posted, but I had to share this
story.
My wife and I found a $200 5/73 Super Beetle. It looked pretty decent
except it was hit really hard in the side. It has just over 86,000 original
miles and was a running driver at the time it was hit. It was parked in a
shed and then a tornado came and lifted the house, machine shed, and trees
and threw them 2 miles away. The beetle just stayed behind as if nothing
had happened. There is typical Nebraska rust, but for $200, I figured the
engine (it's a runner) is worth at least that! :)

Now my wife suggested we flat tow it back home and I'm not a big advocate of
that, but you gotta do what you gotta do. We flat-towed a beetle from
Kansas City back home last October so I figured this 40+ mile run was
nothing compared to the 200 miler we did. We towed with a 1999 Ford Contour
with a 4 cylinder engine. As long as you turn the overdrive off, it goes
quite well. We drove to Hartington, NE to attend the Firehouse rock concert
yesterday and so today on the way back, in 100 degree heat, we drove to the
farm that held the beetle.
One tire was off the bead, but my wife helped me put a strap around the tire
after I removed it and we hit it with air from the air bubble and we beheld
a minor miracle as the tire took air with little effort! It took almost all
35 psi to get it to snap into place on the rim, but it held. We did have to
drive
10 miles one way to buy longer bolts so I could get the adapter plate bolted
up underneath to hook the towbar to, but hey - 90!
minutes later, we managed to get it 45 miles back home via gravel and
black-top road in the heat.

Now here is the weird thing about the beetle. I was underneath the front,
mounting the adapter plate, and I thought - gee this is 71/72 Super Beetle
suspension under here. I know because it's a solid cast lower arm and not
the little double I-beam of stamped metal like my 74 has. The bumpers have
the solid brackets like the 71 and 72 Super Beetles have (not the
energy-absorbing ones). What makes this weird though is that even though
everything underneath is 71/72 Super Beetle, it has the curved windshield
and larger dash. Now that is weird for sure. Since the date code on the
door jamb is 5/73, that would mean they put a new body on an old pan. The
only thing I didn't check is if someone took a later model super and mounted
it on an earlier pan. The car has been repainted orange, but it was orange
over orange but the story goes that it was a 1-owner car before the kid had
it for 2 weeks and got t-boned. Anyway, I believe the seats are 71/72 style
as well. So it's m!
y guess, that maybe the factory ran out of 71/72 bodies, but still had
existing rolling pans to use up before the changeover so they just bolted it
on and kept rolling them. Technically, this would have a been a 1972 Model
year beetle, but with the curved windshield, it really is a bastard Super
Beetle.

Has anyone ever run across anything like this before?

this distributor has wrong vacuum signal for any vw carb smaller than
34pict-3 on a dual port. if you don't specify dual port when saying this is
best distributor then single port guys will remove their 30pict-1,or -2
carbs and have only mechanical as vacuum will not function.

What kind of distributor does it have on it? Does it have a vacuum chamber
or not? If it doesn't, those need to be set so they are 28 to 32 degrees
BTDC at 3000 to 3500 rpm. The BEST dizzy I've found is the SVDA which you
set much like a centrifugal distributor (that has no vacuum chamber) with
the vacuum line plugged and once you set the timing, you plug in the vacuum
chamber. It pulls the best of any distributor I've ever found.. The key
with a VW isn't setting the timing at idle. It's setting it for the maximum

amount of advance possible at RPM (when the advance curve peaks out and
there is no more advance left) so that way you don't accidentally overheat
the engine.

M-6 bolts are smaller than original fender bolts, which are M8-1.25.

5/16-18 is the U.S. close match for size.

If it's like the machine I had years ago, you will need an adapter to
center the wheel. It's just a metal plate maybe 3/8 thick with a
suitable center hole and at least three threaded bolt holes.

Hi, Tim,

I'll bet he has a Stewart-Warner SouthWind heater, the USA response to the
fabled Eberspächer stationary heater.  My first thought is that there are
three areas he'll need to adapt:  (1) the blower motors (either by
replacement or using a voltage-reducer), (2) the ignition system (this might
be tougher), and (3) the fusing (using 12v halves the amperage draw, but I'd
still play it safe).  I sent somebody on this list a set of SouthWind
instructions a couple of years ago -- who was it? -- that are probably
reproducible.  I'll look around for my original copy of the old
instructions, but I think I lost it in last year's Nashville Flood.

It will be a fairly extensive restoration, but (IMHO well worth the effort.
The SouthWind was a very good unit, as combustion heaters go).

FWIW:  The German Webasto used a similar concept and they're occasionally
still available on ebay.de if you can read German.  The company still
exists, producing heaters for streetcars, cross-country trucks, RVs, etc.
Don't know about Stewart-Warner.

Subject: [vintagvw] Tune up now won't start

Morning Volks,
Over the course of two months, I have completed a major tune up:  new plugs,
points, wires, condenser, carb rebuild of a 34 PICT, new fuel pump and push
rod, fuel filter and fuel hoses, changed the oil.
Now it won't start,  I get no gas to the carb or filter, it appears the pump
is not pumping gas. I replaced a NAPA generic fuel pump with one from
MidAmerica and a new fuel push rod. The new push rod is 110mm and the old
one is 90mm. I did not replace the push rod guide as I broke it off half way
in the case and cannot remove it.
I posted the results of the broken guide effort back in April if anyone
remembers.
I am going to adjust the valves and timing once I get it running, but now my
concern is the pump is not getting fuel to the filter or carb.  I did pour
gas in the carb and it backfired twice. I checked the wires and they are
going to the correct plugs, but I will recheck by moving the engine by hand
and checking the marks on the dizzy.  I also plan to remove the new fuel
pump and again turning the engine by hand will see if the push rod is moving
up and down.
I will also remove the fuel line from the pump to the carb and enlist my
wife to turn the ignition while I see if the pump is pumping gas.
Any other suggestions?
I will also have to teach my wife check the timing.  I began this tune up
effort in April and getting up from changing the oil  I felt a little dizzy.
I attributed it to fuel smell and getting up fast.  Well my heart had
different ideas: two heart stoppages, one ambulance ride to the ER and then
a helicopter ride to a trauma hospital and finally a pace maker and I'm
good, except the doctors won't let me near a running engine. :(
The poor bug as been sitting for two months with parts all over the
workbench and very sad looking..

It is entirely possible that something has fallen into the flywheel gear
teeth and wedged itself between the teeth and the bell-housing.

I would just pull the engine and while it's out, fix that starter bushing in

the transmission.

Then to remedy your hard start issues with the increased resistance in the
wiring causing the solenoid to not want to activate, go here and read up on
this rather cheap fix:

Nope, not it. That 885-585V56 67 RP part is the rubber loop strap that held
the rear seatback upright in earlier beetles and Ghias. The system was
later replaced with metal latches.

The strap I need is like a 1 webbing belt, about 18 or so long, with an
adjusting buckle, that holds the seatback down flat when it's folded over

Thanks, but I'm still looking.

Larry - thanks for the nice write up. I can't get over how dead the
listserv is these days. I just still love the expediency of the list as
opposed to web forums. I find them slow and tedious to navigate and really
enjoy just getting emails. It's like reading a good book. I miss the glory

days where the list was flying with so many posts, people unsubbed because
they couldn't handle the volume. BTW: Who runs the list these days? I
can't believe it's still up and running after all these years.

I've forgotten the names of many of the old crowd on here but a few come to
mind. Gilbert Sy Chan, Mr. VW (Jeremy Vreenman), Rob Kuhn, Scott Yuppa
(killed in a plane crash), Bill May, and even Larry and Henry. I've been No

Quarter or NQ for years and some of my old tech posts can still be found
online. I managed to save a few of them and have some emailed back to me.
FWIW: I've been driving Li'l Red again. I don't drive him much...wanting
to save his tired old sheet metal body for as long as I can. I've been
driving a dreaded Ford Contour I got from an impound yard but nothing
carries the same internal sense of joy as cruising around in an old VW.
Looking back on things, internet was a way to connect and get information
that wasn't readily found up until it became available. I think the
excitement of finding others who shared the same passion was what made the
list very popular. Unfortunately, I think things have become ho-hum in many

areas because we kind of all take it for granted. I still love my good old
email and the simpler and faster way to use the net. I'm really an
old-fashioned kind of guy and doing things the older and simpler way suits
my style. Heck, I even have an old Motorola V60 digital phone which I've
rebuilt 3 times an replaced the antenna on about 6 times. Verizon only lets

me have it as I'm grandfathered in and they just can't figure out why my
little old phone won't die. I have a stash of about 5 of them that I pull
parts off as needed. :)

Our annual VW Bus event is the end of the month. It's www.bustoberfest.com
and if anyone would like to come in whatever they have, they are more than
welcome to.

Thanks again for taking the time to post your story and photos Larry. That
was really great of you to take the time.

Hi Bert,
I had the same thing happen on my 66. An occasional grinding/squeaking sound
that had the speedo needle bouncing in rhythm. I would wiggle the speedo
cable, loosen then tighten the barrel connector at the speedo thinking it
was the cable. Then one day while watching the needle bounce the sound
stopped and the needle dropped to zero. Changed the cable and still nothing.
Took the old cable, hooked it up to a drill and watched it spin on the other
end ok. Hooked it up to the speedo and nothing. So I've deduced my speedo
broke. Now I just need to find a good used 66 t1speedometer.

Volks,

My '70 has developed a noise in the speedometer. It's intermittent, of
course, and can't always perform on cue, but when it occurs, it issues a
chud chud chudchudchudchud noise that keeps time with the wheel revs. It
might stop for a few minutes, then mysteriously resume for no apparent
reason.

The speedometer needle is generally pretty stable, but occasionally it goes
into wild gyrations, then settles down again. It seems to show a pretty
accurate speed (just gauging by the feel -- it reads in km/h), or at least
to average a fairly accurate reading if it's doing its dance. I replaced
the buffer resistor, but there was no effect. (Full disclosure: The
replacement was also very old.)

I dread tearing stuff out to gain access to the back of my speedo again, but
when I do, I'd like to know whether I'm going to encounter something minor
(a tube of cable lubricant) or major (a removal/rebuild of the unit). The
cable and speedometer are both 40 years old.

Does anybody recognize the symptoms I've described? What might I be in for?

My understanding is that the chief of VW went to the chief of Porsche asking
once again to be able to use the Porsche boxer motor (and yes, it's
air-cooled). VW had tried previously to get the engine but Porsche denied
the request. Now, things in the automotive business world have changed and
apparently Porsche has relented, allowing VW to use it's (Porsche's) famed
air-cooled boxer engine. I think VW recognized the resurgence of the classic
Beetle and decided they needed to widen it's appeal from cute secretary
sled/chick-mobile to something with a little testosterone ...

Does anybody have any recent experience with them? I'm now leery.

For years, the VW factory offered its European customers optional foglights
on the beetles. They came with a custom VW bracket manufactured for VWAG by
Hella and bearing the VW logo. My usual European sources are clueless where
a pair for 68-72 beetles might still be found. Does anybody have any ideas?
I could even do with Hella. (I have some Hella NOS foglight brackets for
earlier bumpers through '67 -- be willing to swap.)

 Volks,

To those who celebrate Christmas I wish y'all a very Merry
 Christmas -- and
to all, as the Germans say, a good slide into the New Year.

Santa Claus brought me an extension of my subscription to the German
car-restorer hobbyist's magazine, Oldtimer Praxis. Lots of
 how-to
articles, and the classified ads are a great route to sources
 for obscure
parts and replacements. Their companion magazine is called
 Oldtimer-Markt
and it covers lots of European car restorations, but with fewer
 how-to
articles. You can Google them out for subscription information.
 The
problem is that you kind of have to read German pretty well, and
that'sbecoming a lost art. 8^) Sort of like working on AC

Nick,
Before you rip apart the engine you might want to do a few
diagnostics, oil pressure, compression. Sounds like the rings are
worn though.

I think the general opinion regarding align-bore is that it is not
worth it because no one does it correctly on a type 1 case. If you
have low oil pressure and you can source a new case that is the way I
would go. If the pistons and cylinders are original you might want to
have the cylinders honed and install new rings. For heads there are a
few good places that restore them to better then new condition. A.J.
Sims (lowbudget), or Len Hoffman (HAM).

Dan

Also, if one uses a 31 PICT on a 1600SP, will the 31 PICT need to be

Can the main jet be drilled out to make it work? If so, what size do you
need to drill the hole to?

I'm a bit confused as to what displacement the 31 pict was originally used

included seat rails. They seem to be very firmly welded onto the pan. I'm
guessing the pans are Brazilian, but there's no evidence.

But the seats just barely fit -- they'll go on maybe four to five inches or
so, then they bind up. And I can't find where they're binding -- no scraped
paint, visible gouging, etc., even where I've used a rubber mallet to
persuade them farther into the rails. (That's only gained me a couple of
inches -- barely enough to get mny knees under the steering wheel).

The seats are rebuilt and seemingly in great condition. The rails are
nicely lubricated. Their rail grippers are straight and smooth, and the
seats worked well on their previous floor (they're both German original). I
don't want to start relieving my seats with a Dremel grinder or hacksaw
except as a last resort.

The inner flanges of the floor rails are 15.25 (387 mm) apart at the front
and 15.375 (390.5 mm) apart at the rear. The seats look as if they should
fit throughout that range -- but they don't. I suspect I'll need my trusty
sledge hammer, but I don't want to just begin whacking until something bends
-- or breaks. I need a target measurement.

QUESTIONS: Who knows the correct factory measurement for the distance
between the inner lips of the floor flanges on a 1970 Type 1? Or the outer
dimension, for that matter? Who has some experience to share before I start
any violence? Is there any usual problem that aftermarket floor seat
rails seem to present, or is it just random poor quality in Brazil? I don't
have a welding rig and would prefer to avoid that route if possible. But
even then, I would need the correct dimensions to shoot for.

I hate when this happens.

Thanks,

Bert Knupp in Music City USA

Dear Group:

My original single-system brake main cylinder on my '59 has failed in the
past, causing all four brakes to fail simultaneously.

I was wondering if a later-style dual-system brake main cylinder that
separates the brakes into separate front and rear brake systems, along with
separate reservoirs, could be simply bolted into my '59 (and my '63) without
any significant changes (i.e., welding, changing mounting hole/nut pattern,
etc).

I like the idea of only one of the brake systems failing, as opposed to all
brakes.

Thanks,

Ever since I got into the VW world back in 1993, my grandfather had been
instrumental in helping me work on them and helping me solve various
problems such as stuck drums, breaking loose rusted fasteners, and even
minor things such as how to grease wheel bearings. He was very old-school
in his repairs but that comes from his father who ran a repair shop in
Lewiston, NE repairing model T Fords years ago
http://www.casde.unl.edu/history/counties/pawnee/lewiston/ (top picture on

I had the wonderful privilege of being the oldest grandson and being taught
so many things from this wonderful man. There was much more left which I
never got to learn once his health wouldn't let him do much
more than walk from the house to the car. His shop still sits there with
his lifetime of tools ready to be graced with the master's hands and it's so
hard to see.

I just wanted to pay tribute to my grandfather 'Papa' and I'm so glad I got
to see him the day before he died and visit with him for an hour - thanking
him for all that he taught me. I also was with him a little over 2 hours
before he passed away - results from stage 4 cancer and a massive stroke.

Thanks for letting me post this. He's the reason I wear bib overalls and do
repairs the way I do - a hand-me-down from generations ago.

 Hello Greg,

Depending how long you have had this problem the carb is probably the last
thing causing it and the last to attack.

Most problems with engines are electrical in nature.

First thing to check is your compression on each cylinder with engine cold
and after squirting oil down the spark plug hole. Then do the same with
 engine warm.
You might not have valve or piston ring problems but this will eliminate
the possibility and provide a base measurement for a later date.

Check carb to manifold bolts and the intake manifold bolts. An air leak
can cause problems so make sure tight and that gasket is good with no
leakes. If in doubt, replace gasket(s) but don't touch carb for now.

Check vaccume line between carb and distributor. This is cheap stuff so I
always replace if in doubt. If you have a vaccume gauge use that to check
engine vac as you accelerate. This is a wierd science so depends on only
if you have a friend who knows how to read and interpret the gauge
 readings.

Next, check your points...make sure they are at the proper gap and are
super clean. A couple of quick rasp with a flat jewlers file and clean up
with alcohol usually does fine. If badly pitted, replace with new and save
 the old as a spare.

The only good way to check your condensor is to swap/replace with a known
good one. Worth a try and if nothing changes be sure to swap back to the
 old old.

Check spark plug gap and clean.

Make sure fuel filter is not clogged.

I've had a intermittently bad coil cause the same problem...swap out a
different known good coil to eliminate that.

A similar problem was caused once by a clogged fuel line which was
starving the carb. Sometimes a blast with compressed air will fix that
 like it did for me.

Another time it was the fuel tank full of some waste crud from the various
cheap gas stations I was using and the ethonol mixes just coming on line
at the time. If this is the case it might be best if the local bug shop or
radiator removes, cleans and recoats it for you. If really
 rusty...replace.

Sometimes it is actually the fuel pump and the best check is done with a
fuel pump pressure tester. Otherwise, swap out and see what happens.
Always use good new proper fitting fuel lines with all the proper clamps
 and fittings!

Spark plug wires make a differenceput in a new set if they are over 3
or 4 years old and/or look beat up. I use ACCEL brand with the static
suppression core with the stranded copper core type are excellent also
(but sound bad on the radio). I think age is the main factor here.

Distributor cap is notorious for causing problems...clean inside and out
with mineral spirits then alcohol. Again, swapping out with a know good
spare is a good way to eliminate problems. I used to do this as a radar
technician in the Navy but would always save my known good spares for
 later trouble shooting.

If you do all of the above and you still have problems it may be the carb
but don't touch it untill you've eliminated everything thing else. If it
is the carb a rebuild kit usually takes care of any problems related to
age and bad fuel. In this case the accelerator pump portion is suspect to
me but rebuild the entire carb while you have it apart. Be sure to use a
see thru fuel filter if you don't have one. I like to be able to see the
 gas getting into the carb.

Hope this is start and hope it helps.

 Bob

 Subject: [vintagvw] Tunnel Mystery

 Hi All,

A friend came by today with a 69 Autostick Bug.? I was under the car
looking into where he was loosing heated air, when I noticed the area
around the rear most drain hole in the bottom of the tunnel looked
oily/wet.? I was concerned it might be a fuel leak, but it did not smell
at all of gas.? It did seem ,whatever it was, to be dissolving the
undercoating around the hole though, so I think it could be fuel.? Any
thoughts on what anyone here thinks might be coming out there?? Brake
fluid was low, but that would be on the floorpans, not inside the tunnel,
correct? Brakes are firm as well.

 Thanks

 Ray

 hey gang,
I finally got around to pulling the leaky axletube retainer plates off of
the '68 swingaxle type 1 trans installed in my 67 bus. When I first pulled
them off there was alot of form-a-gasket on both sides of the paper
gasket(s) that were in there. I didn't think to count how many paper
gaskets were in there before I started scraping everything away. So now
that I have it cleaned up, the parts store gave me 8-2 hole paper gaskets
to put back. He said I might not need them all. So how many do I need?
 Thanks for any help.

Re: [vintagvw] Late IRS Transmission Swap Into 69

2008-09-06 Thread Bill May
if the 74 trans is single side cover with AT stamped on pad on
passenger side it is 3.88-1 ring and pinion with .93 4th gear. you can use
the 69 nose cone on it to install. your 69 trans would be 4.12-1 with .89
4th gear. sounds like a good swap to me.

 Hi All,

 I want to use a trans from a 74 in a 69 Bug because it is literally a 0
mile unit that was only used up till now in a VW training center many
years ago.? Looking for suggestions?? Should I:

 1. Swap nose cone from 69 trans onto 74 trans and use 69 mounts?? Seem to
 recall later mounts were stronger?
 2. Remove 69 front mount with studs pointing towards the back that is
currently welded to the 69 pan, and weld the piece with the studs pointing
down that is used to mount the 74 front mount?? Is that piece sold
 anywhere?
 3. Rebuild a 74 pan(have one) and put the 69 down on that?

 Thanks!!

That's supposed to be a steel line, with compression fittings. If it's
copper, you are in danger of developing a crack in the pipe - copper is
not good where there's vibration, it work hardens and cracks.

About a year ago I tried to find tires for my daughter's '74 standard

manufacturers no longer make the size to fit our air-cooled Bugs. A
recommendation from the list for 165/80-R15s took me to TireRack
 where
I ordered a set by Kumho to be dropped-shipped to the local dealer.
These tires seem to work just fine.

Last week she had a flat, causing the tire to be ruined. Not only
 was
the tire not available locally, all the major net companies listed
 the
Kumho as back-ordered. While searching I was directed to an eBay
advertisement for those tires. This ad from Buy Wheels Today of
Cincinnati, OH showed about 30 available. Knowing I needed a set for
the other Bug in the garage as well as the replacement, I ordered
 five.

Where are other folks buying their tires these days?

I used the last of my Bosch W8AC(7502) on a bug last weekend and stopped

was, so I gave them the 7502 number.

Same deal...don't have any 7502's and can't get any...
So, I had them look up by application...67 bug ...plenty of Champion and
other to fit it ,b ut *no* Bosch!

Called another parts store this morning and got the same answer.
I see a bunch of places on line that seem to have them, but not the
two major parts stores I usually deal with(at least here in the south).

Anyone else having that problem? Got a cross reference and it shows an
NGK plug I can use, but what the hell's up with Bosch

Maybe asking Cip a question would help? Im guessing this kind of lock
used the same rubber gasket as the regular bracket but its just a guess. And
then maybe it has a hole for the lock itself to pass thru.

I guess we can get a diagram somewhere as to how this locked worked, as

  Asad,

Unless they're '67-only rear overriders, I believe that they are
 interchangeable side for side.
The '67's have a downward/ inward sloping, asymmetrical shape to make
 some
extra room for the squared-off bottom of that one-year-only decklid.
The up-to-'67 ones are symmetrical, and therefore could be mounted on
 either L or R side.

did you set fuel pump pushrod length per the bentley? you may need to add

Failing a specific answer, you could always install an adjustable
regulator and pressure gauge and start with 2.5 PSI and fiddle with it
from there. If it floods, drop the pressure; if it starves on a good high
speed freeway run, raise it up. I had to do this with the Webers on my
sand rail even though I knew the optimal pressure, I think it was flooding
a bit so I dialed it down a scosh and all was well. That, and new needles
 and seats :)

So THAT's why I've always had trouble getting a newer motor into an old
car. I just figured I needed to juggle the motor a bit more until the
heater boxes went past the firewall - and it always worked for me. A
 struggle, but doable.

The actual opening in the engine bay front to back is the same size, or
 nothing would work.

 Volks!

Have a question about the tarboard firewall insulation. Im sure Bert
 would be interested in this.

Many years ago my brother Suleman made a very lucky find by locating
an NOS firewall insulation tarboard. He purchased it and we put in on the
68 daily driver. It was of pretty much the same material as originally on
 the carwell the remains.

Last week I bought a set for my 59 rag project. Now this is of an
entirely different material. Its thinner, more flexible and has a more
textured finish. I doubt it is original.

I got it from a person who used to restore VWs for a living till some
years ago. He claimed it was the original thing. I pointed out that the
other was of a different material but he insisted that there were two or
more types available. This new one has a good finish and does have cutouts
for the cables to pass thru and all. But maybe it was manufactired locally
 here.

Can anyone throw some light here? Is this guy telling the truth?? I
really dont have any choice here and would happily keep my current
purchase even if I know Ive been had!

 Asad.

I did notice that 'indexing pin' on the pre 67 shifters.

I think that is what keeps them from rotating. The post 68 ones can
be rotated as you mentioned.

So for fitting the chromed example Id have to cut n file...now Id
put that on the back burner, unless I experiment with a spare tunnel rod.

This also means Id have to go the same route to fit the pre 67 shift
lever onto the rag. Or maybe go on treasure hunt and change the tunnel rod
to an earlier item. If Im really lucky Id find the pre 67 bus nosecone too.
I think thats a better option.

I have a slightly-bent chromed shift lever in my `69, IIRC it did come
from a pre`68 Type III. `68-up shiftrods do not have the slot in the
front of the ball-socket for the indexing pin that sticks out of the
front of the early bent levers (the exception being `68 AutoStick). The
straight shift levers used on `68-up cars can spin 'round and 'round. If
you removed the index pin from a bent shifter to allow it to be
installed into the late shiftrod it would swing about crazily when you
tried to shift. I used a cut-off wheel and some small files to create
the slot in my shiftrod, and it works great. I'd recommend removing the
shiftrod from the pan to do this, it's difficult to do in-place without
scarring up the top of the tunnel. --- asad ishaque

I'm in the middle of replacing the pan under my '70 Bug because of
extensive rust in the frame head.

I got a very good deal on a '69 rolling pan with the front beam and
transaxle with only some metal replacement required in the battery
tray area. The beam has no rust on the bottom of the shock towers
and appears in good shape so I'm going to use it for now. The ball
joint boots were split and cracked but the joints appeared to be in
 good shape.

Looking through the CP1 catalog I found a ball joint boot replacement
kit and decided to try this route. Replacement of the ball joints on
my last beam ended with me buying a new disc brake beam because of
the high price to have the new ball joints pressed in; nearly $70 per
joint if I supplied the joint and removed the arm from the car.

The installation was pretty straight forward using a pickle fork to
remove the joint from the steering knuckle, removing remnants of old
boot, flushing old grease and any contaminants with new grease,
installing the new boot and reassembly.

 Anyone else done this?

 Just a temporary fix?

 Cheers,

 Nick

 Hi All,

I have several questions, a couple that may only be answerable by Bill or
Marc.? I need to buy a pair of heater channels for my 69 Bug convertible.?
Seems to be a lot of conjecture on correct heater channels.? I have seen 2
ads on the Samba for heater channels that seem to be counter to what I
thought was true.? For 68 and newer Std Bugs, I always thought the heater
channels were the ones that are full length in the front where the top and
bottom plate are the same length such that they extend under the front
frame support to the front of the car.? The ones for Super Beetle I always
believed were the ones where the bottom plate was full length, but the top
half only extended to the inside of the front frame support- the bottom
plate had 2 holes where the bolts should go through to nuts in the frame
support instead of the heater channels themselves?? Today I met up with
someone who had a gray colored full length channel (measured it) but said
he had used the other side on a S!
uper Beetle, and in fact it had writing on it saying it was for 71-79
Super Beetle.? Also saw another ad that seems to indicate the full length
were for Super Beetle and vice versa.?? On top of that my brother has 2
channels with the extended lower plate that he said he purchased for his
69 convertible.? Many online ads have the same picture for both channels
though the numbers are different.? So my questions:

 1. Were there certain years where Super and Std heater channels were the
 same?
 2. Any way to tell country they are made in?
 3. The one I saw today had the front portion of the channel made with 2
pieces overlapped and tack welded both top and bottom right at the bend
rather than one stamped out piece.? Was this an older way that they were
manufactured?? Would this be as strong as top/bottom stamped out as one
 piece each and tacked together?
 4. I want good heavy channels- saw German ones on OEVeeDub and heavy
ones from Aircooled.net, both are the same price.? Any experiences with
 either of these?
 5. Am I correct on which ones are for which Bug?

I actually welded a heater channel into my 72 Std some years ago and now
am not certain anymore which one I used

 Thanks !!!

 Ray

years had the harness run along the floor on the LHS.

By any chance was this the factory location or the person who worked on
this car earlier had just fancied routing it through the roof?? Would be a
headache to pull out of that tight location I suppose.

 Sammy!

Well said about tools! Theres a bad trend locally of not using
specialist tools. Torque wrenches are unheard of. Hammering used instead
 of
pullers, damaging pulleys, bearings and what not. Not having the right
 tools
for a job is false economy. You end up damaging parts more than the tools
 worth.

Bought a number of wrenches and allen keys to work on the dubs. Makes
tightening /loosening the rear axle nut and flywheel nut so mush more
civilised. Chisel and hammer weilding freaks are kept away from my beloved
 wagens!

While on this, I wanted to fabricate an escutcheon removing tool.
 Would
prevent scratching the dashboard paint and make it easier to
 tighten/loosen
 those original swicthes in place.

I reckon the toughest job on my '56 resto (so far) has been pulling
a new harness through the blasted roof channel. It is indeed a PITA.
I should remind myself of that anytime I come upon subsequent challenges.

-Sammy

P.S. Having the right tool also helps. I finally got off the rear axle
bearing cover I mentioned a while back. A $5 gear puller from the store
did the trick. What are we without our tools?

Re: [vintagvw] 1959 doors and handles

2007-08-08 Thread Bill May
no-if they were 63 -58 yes. they changed the locking mechanism in 64 model
year to 64-66 style. they will bolt on but will work with 59 door if use 59
mechanism in the door and weld the small hole for non ice pick handle.. so
answer is yes if put 59 mechanism in door and take out 64 mechanism. vent
windows and etc are the same.

This one is especially for Bill,

I remember you had told me earlier that doors between 1960 and 1964
would be good for my 59 bug except for the outer door handle being
pushbutton style as against the correct ice pick ones.

I might get hold of a good pair of 64 style doors and have already a
 set
of NOS ice picks. Would it be possible to use the ice pics on these doors
 with the existing lock mechanisms??

 Hi there Bill,

This is Asad, Sulemans brother. I think you assumed it was Suleman
 from
the surname!! Anyway I hope he can also manage to send some posts here.

Have a lot of questions and being a 60 ragtop owner youd be one of the
most helpful people for me here!
