We don't charge anything to fix problems with the radio, router or

I never used to charge for a lot of that stuff but then one day I said screw
it. $75 for a service call. I had some complaints, started lowering the price
for 5 minute repairs and decided on another change. I now do $50 service
calls. I decided instead of getting complaints about $75 or lowering the price
all the time because it's a quick fix that I'd be better off and have an easier
time charging $50 all the time than $75 half the time. It has worked out
nicely. No complaints and I don't feel like I'm screwing people (like $75 for
a 5 minute job). Couple things to remember is my coverage area is pretty
small. My office is in the middle so the drive time to any edge is not much
more than 15 minutes. We're also mostly residental, so we don't need instant
response. I can schedule a couple things in one area to make it efficient.

I think sometimes the provider shoots themselves in the foot, because they
don't charge, when a customer would be perfectly willing to pay.
For example, The second time a dogs eats a wire, as Kurt explained, I don't
think most home owners would mind paying.
In most cases we do repair/maintenance at NO Charge, for things that are our

responsibilty, that we warrant to cover.
And we'll give customers a break now and then, if they are an easy or long
term customer of ours.
But there is nothing wrong with charging, when its appropriate. Nothing less

than $90, our 1 hour min..

I use these: http://www.arrisistore.com/product.php?pid=710865 I buy
them from Graybar in boxes of 100.

I figure this: my average run is around 30-150 feet.

Ethernet is good for 300+/- feet @ 100/1000bt . I figure that if I mess
up the twisted pair just a little bit in that 100 foot long cable I
won't see a huge impact in my 4mb-10mb service and if I do, then I bet
wrong and I am out time and some minor materials.

All of the cable I pull is outdoor gel filled cable so everything is
pretty aqua-phobic once I put electrical tape over the splice. I also
offer the home owner the opportunity to put the cable behind a 2x4
screwed to the wall over the cable or to put it through some conduit to
keep the dog off the cable.

Re: [WISPA] How much to charge for a truck roll

2009-04-19 Thread Brian Rohrbacher

I never used to charge for a lot of that stuff but then one day I said
screw it. $75 for a service call. I had some complaints, started
lowering the price for 5 minute repairs and decided on another change.
I now do $50 service calls. I decided instead of getting complaints
about $75 or lowering the price all the time because it's a quick fix
that I'd be better off and have an easier time charging $50 all the
time than $75 half the time. It has worked out nicely. No complaints
and I don't feel like I'm screwing people (like $75 for a 5 minute
job). Couple things to remember is my coverage area is pretty small.
My office is in the middle so the drive time to any edge is not much
more than 15 minutes. We're also mostly residental, so we don't need
instant response. I can schedule a couple things in one area to make
it efficient.

Same with pretty much everyone else we don't charge if it a problem with
our gearhowever, if its a damaged cable, roofer damage, PC configuration,
router configuration etc.
We run a truck for 35.00 base fee and 65 per hour after the first half hour.

On customers that require a move, i.e new house or need to move the gear its
100.00 minimum.

Re: [WISPA] How much to charge for a truck roll

2009-04-18 Thread Tom DeReggi
I think sometimes the provider shoots themselves in the foot, because they
don't charge, when a customer would be perfectly willing to pay.
For example, The second time a dogs eats a wire, as Kurt explained, I don't
think most home owners would mind paying.
In most cases we do repair/maintenance at NO Charge, for things that are our
responsibilty, that we warrant to cover.
And we'll give customers a break now and then, if they are an easy or long
term customer of ours.
But there is nothing wrong with charging, when its appropriate. Nothing less
than $90, our 1 hour min..

If it's our gear, there is no charge - it's supplied as part of the
service.

If it's their gear, we charge 99.00 for the first hour. It's rare we
can't resolve the problem in an hour.

If it's one of our business customers, we usually waive the first hour
and just take care of them.

Re: [WISPA] How much to charge for a truck roll

2009-04-16 Thread Jerry Richardson
We saw a high failure rate on Breezecom power supplies as well. Didn't
seem to matter if they were on a UPS or not. I think they just overheat
and bake themselves.

Thanks for the info guys.

We have a lot of cases where the power supply goes bad. Is that
classified as being caused by the customer? Out where are, the power
fluctuates a lot. We encourage people to get a UPS, but not all do.

I'm just curious what everybody is charging their residential and
business customers for a truck roll to fix problems with the wisp
 subscriber equipment.

We've always tried to get the customer to pay something, especially
when
we have to replace equipment that goes bad. It's often turns into a
whole ordeal where the customer gets mad, threaten to switch
services,
etc. We mainly use Alvarion equipment which is pretty reliable, but
when
they go bad, they're expensive to replace.

Like to hear how others are doing it.

 Thanks,

The power supply is going to be a really big argument, I think.

Personally, we take care of that cost (as it is in essence part of the
 SU/SM/CPE).

Also, a lot of it depends on your competition. If you have no one to
compete against, you can really stick it to the customer, charge for
everything. If there are other wisps, cable, dsl, you might have to
take more of a hit not to lose your subscriber.
