  Not arguing... asking

How do you handle the customers that just mash buttons?

I just walked to take trash out of the office and the phone rings "Tech
Support", I answer it and it's someone wanting to get service. I have
no idea why he chose Support. Maybe he just thought he could get some
technical questions answered there better, maybe no one picked up the
  sales line.

These are the issues (amongst a few others) that keep me from ever
  outsourcing.

I don't want a customer to have to be transferred to be helped, and I
don't want to pay the per call fee to someone like SP or GTC for a
  billing or sales call.

They sometimes have questions unrelated to my service. No way I’m paying a call

That was one of my biggest issues with out sourcing.

However, for example, we had a guy call the customer service line last night at
8:30. Didn’t leave a message. Called right back and chose support. I didn’t
answer it. Left a message saying he was moving and wanted to schedule the move.

Customer service closed at 6. Support is open until 9.

The button mashers will drive you broke.

And if the customer had a question unrelated to my service I definitely don’t
want to pay someone to take the call.

If the issue is a major down - we know about it from alarming 24x7.

Our voicemail includes instructions on how to power cycle.

Anything else - customer is paying for residential services. They can leave a
message. Some don’t. That shows the issue wasn’t even really important to them.
And they never call back either. They either figured it out, or it became
irrelevant.

I’ve thought (though won’t) about routing all support calls to voicemail to
weed out the non important calls.

And as I’ve talked about in other threads - I used the several hundred I would
have paid outsourced and hired an employee.

Now during the day I have my own level1 support person who also doubles as
billing, sales, office staff, Tower hand, and part time installer.

[AFMUG] POE FUSE issues

2018-04-27 Thread chuck
There is a problem for some customers using our POE-FUSE-APC product. I am
getting some product sent back to me for analysis. Right now my best guess is
we may have loaded the wrong value if fuse in out pick n place machine and they
are blowing as soon as a real load gets attached. Will know more in a few
days.

I would avoid buying or using this product until I know what I did wrong.

Re: [AFMUG] After Hours Tech Support

2018-04-27 Thread Darin Steffl
Matt,

Every time you send an email on this, I wonder if your customers are
actually as bad as you say because our customers simply aren't this bad. We
have two options, press 1 for tech support, press 2 for sales, billing, or
any other questions.

During business hours, both options ring in house and go to voicemail if we
don't answer. Only after our office is closed do we send tech support calls
to serverplus. Our option 2 which is everything besides tech support
continues to voicemail after hours.

This system seems to work really well for us and we almost never (once a
month tops) get a sales call that goes to serverplus because they selected
the wrong option.

Politely, please make up your mind or stop asking the same question every
couple weeks. Serverplus is fine. Either train your customers to be better
at selecting options, change your IVR to something easier like two options
that we use, or leave the ISP business if it bothers you this much.

Sorry to be harsh but you need to make up your mind.

Here's another $7 that would have gone down the drain... just got this call:

"Is my Internet on? I can't make phone calls with my phone and it
wasn't working on the WiFi at work today".

Um, that has absolutely nothing to do with your Internet through us,
you'll need to contact StraightTalk. Your modem and router are up and
on-line.

Re: [AFMUG] After Hours Tech Support

2018-04-27 Thread Leroy Koglin
Our call menu separates the departments out so only tech support is
automatically directed to SP if we have no agents logged in. Sure, if a
caller does go through the tech support options and SP takes the call
there is a call charge. It has not been a problem at call. What happens
is all dependent on your decision tree you build with them. SP can take
the call info, payment info, etc and do whatever you want them to do. I
have no knowledge of GTC or others, but I'm sure they can do the same.
At this point, we have SP escalate any that they cannot close as resolved.

Hello.

We have a timer for DC power in our vans that we run the inverters off. The
time can only be programmed for on/off times.

I'm looking for something more like a 1 or 2 hours duration timer where you
hit a button or turn a knob and it will only stay on for that duration,
then turn off. Like a bathroom fan/light thing for for 12v DC

Any recommendations?

The link we have up and running is on 4.1.0-beta1 (which is what it's been
on for months).

I don't remember exactly what short cp is supposed to do, but I have it off
on ours. I think it's supposed to be able to get slightly better capacity
in some cases, or something like that, but our link seemed to work better
with it off.

In all fairness, they were no different than any other 11GHz radios
we've dealt with once we figured out to turn off all the "auto" stuff.

It sounds like you may have a hardware problem with one of them. That
would make alignment an impossible task.

It comes down to whether they are 'waiting to be engaged', or 'engaged to
be waiting'. From my studies of FLSA and speaking with attorneys, so long
as you have a signed contract in place that provides them some sort of
compensation that they agreed on, then it is legal. For example, my
previous employer had us sign a paper that we agreed to the on-call policy,
and that policy would give us $75 for being on call during our week to be
on call. We still log time while working on actual issues, and are still
paid time-and-a-half for any overtime worked. The compensation was just
for the time that we are 'waiting to be engaged'. Since there may be
restrictions on your own personal time during the hours that you are on
call, (ie. not drinking alcohol or staying within a certain geographical
area), then the time may not actually be considered to be your 'own time',
and some sort of previously agreed upon compensation should be given. Put
this on paper.

Definitely link them on the bench first. We did not have any issues

[AFMUG] Fiber repair budget

2018-04-27 Thread Adam Moffett
Does anybody have any rules of thumb they go by for budgeting for
repairs of aerial fiber?
I'm sure eventually a tree will fall on a line or a truck will take out
a pole. Just trying to do my Boy Scout duty and be prepared. Any
insight from people who've been there would be helpful.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: [AFMUG] After Hours Tech Support

2018-04-27 Thread Adam Moffett
You can rely on an outside call center to take payments and do the basic
tier 1 troubleshooting. They'll have to escalate a "real" problem
because you'll know things about your network that they won't know. Go
in with that expectation and you'll come out happy.

Some labor laws are federal and some are state. So your state laws will
be a factor in how to handle an employee doing off hours stuff. It
might be dangerous to go by what this bunch of randos on the Internet
are doing.

In NY I'm aware of two methods that apparently are ok. Some people get
paid an "on call rate" which is different from their normal rate, and
they switch to normal rate when they start working. I'm aware of other
companies who pay for 4 hours if the person does any work at all, and
then pay for a full day if the person exceeds 4 hours and 1 minute.
Both of those methods apparently are ok --major companies in this area
use both of these methods. My understanding is that if we place an
expectation on the employee that they should be available to handle a
call then that interferes with their own use of their own time and they
have to be somehow be compensated for that. Since you're in another
state, it might be different. I'm not a lawyer, and I'm completely
unqualified to talk about any of this, and I'm barely qualified to talk
about anything at all.

We don't.

We pay serverplus $250 per month minimum for "X" amount of calls for
24/7 tech support when our office is closed. It works fine most of the
time and the customer gets to talk to someone. We don't return calls
until normal business hours again. Sometimes I'll text someone if I
think it'll be a quick fix. Otherwise, they're told to expect a
callback on the next business day.

[AFMUG] Provider billing

2018-04-27 Thread Travis Johnson

Hi,

I just received a new billing statement from my ISP, and I was shocked.
Attached is the actual bill, but here are a few facts:

(1) They "automatically" added their "PC Care Support" service.
(2) They are charging a "Carrier Recovery Fee", which is just profit.
(3) Their pricing is crazy... $89.95/month for up to 20Mbps (and
$69.96/month for up to 10Mbps).

(4) Static IP address is $20/month.

It's really too bad these guys have become just as bad as every other
telco in the country... people use them because they don't have any
other choice, not because they want to.

Nothing at all on the other side, or just weak? If it's not showing anything at
all, it must not actually be linking, in which case it could be something

Hey guys just wanted to share a fun project I finished up yesterday. I
volunteer with ARES RACES in my county here in AZ. Fire season is here and we
are already under a burn ban. My last build was a bit bulky so I wanted to trim
down the size a bit. The main purpose of the build is a crossband repeater.

Thanks for the idea. Just have to figure out which connectors to use for the DC

They make some nice screw terminals that solder into slots into the PCB.

There has been some significant improvement since the 500 and 600.
I like the extra power on the 5.1 band and the 45Mhz wide channel
selection down to 5Mhz
DSO and other smart RF tech has made this my goto for interlinks and a
reliable dedicated ptp for an end user.

Re: [AFMUG] After Hours Tech Support

2018-04-27 Thread Matt Hoppes
They sometimes have questions unrelated to my service. No way I’m paying a call
center somewhere for that.

Double checked configuration, double checked duplexorsgoing make sure
all antennas are level and plumb myself but don't know what else to try.
Might change master slave settings since only master transmits and try to
realign again this morning. I am frustrated because it was easier to align
a 23 mile link than these. Using 10mhz channels to align...maybe should
use the FCC assigned ones and see what happens frustrated in Artesia...

If all the config matches, the first thing I'd check would be the

If you answer calls and return voicemails after hours you set expectation that
you always will … so if those calls are important enough (and only you would

sticking to published business hours and/or adjusting them to meet your
