Oshawa Second Marsh/ Darlington Provincial Park area Dec 1
Well with the cold weather both the Oshawa Second Marsh and McLaughlin Bay have
frozen overnight. Lots of waterfowl foraging offshore on beaton's reef and lots
of finches in the park.

Highlights
1 Drake Eurasian Wigeon foraging north of the GM platform near the leaning
Osprey tower 6:30 - 7:20am The marsh is quite high and alot of waterfowl
were foraging in the flooded cattails at the north end of the marsh. The
bird was in the
Oshawa Second Marsh 7am to 9;30am
1 Little Gull and 9 Bonaparte's in the marsh.
Offshore in Lake Ontario there were another 4 Little Gulls and 85
Bonaparte's foraging on ghost midge hatch on Beaton's Reef.
Beaton's Reef is the remnants of Beaton's Point it is a shallow water reef
that runs
the Canadian Wildlife Service and Tyler Hoar will be there
to answer you questions about the Little Gull.

Farewell St. Colonel Sam Drive. Turn East onto Colonel Sam Drive and follow

1 Male Yellow-headed Blackbird. This bird is wary (at least when I am
around) and the 3 times I saw it, it was foraging on the ground in short
grass between the marsh and Colonel Sam Drive behind the GM platform. It

A large fallout of Passerines (2000+ white-throated sparrows, 16 Brown
Thrashers, 10 species of warblers, etc.) occurred Saturday morning. By
Monday morning the number of birds has gone down significantly, but the
species diversity continues to rise.

A movement of waterbirds on Lake Ontario (gulls, grebes, waterfowl, etc)
this morning from the SE.
There has been a significant drop in Thrashers, Towhees and White-throated
Sparrows overnight.
The Barrier Beach running along the south side of

On the central section of the beach there were the following

This morning I planned to walk around Oshawa Second Marsh and Darlington
Provincial Park to try and record a big species day. Shortly after arriving
at the Barrier beach along the south side McLaughlin Bay plans changed. I

Expecting a good flight of Whimbrels this morning I got down just before
sunrise and was joined over the morning by 11 visitors
However the Whimbrels were not cooperating. We had one flock of 6 birds at
8am.

There was a bad heat shimmer over the lake and I had several flocks of
possible Whimbrels (160+ birds). However due to the heat shimmer distorting

I took a lunch break stroll on the Darlington Provincial Park barrier beach
today at 1 pm. The shorebirds were scattered from the east end of the beach
to the pond in the middle of the beach.
Highlights:
1 Baird's Sandpiper. The second shorebird who lost its way this week. I
have not seen
Courtice area Sod farms at 4pm
There are two areas in NE Courtice with sod farms both only about 5-10
minutes north of the 401. From Highway 401 exit at Courtice Road (first
exit east of Oshawa). Take Courtice Road north to its end at Taunton Road.
Turn right(east) on Taunton road.

This afternoon there was an immature Parasitic Jaeger following gulls and
small flocks of Red breasted Mergansers that were moving around offshore of
Darlington Provincial Park's barrier beach. On the beach there was 10 Dunlin
and 12 Snow Buntings. On the north side of the barrier beach in
Northern Flicker and all 3
Scoter species
Coburg Harbour
1 Brant and at a nearby residence 1 Chipping Sparrow.
Directions
East Lake and West Lake both occur in sections of Sandbanks provincial park.

We Stopped in Whitney looking for fruiting shrubs and possibly Bohemian

Little Gulls returned to the marsh on the 10th. Their numbers have climbed
to 20 birds this morning. When I left at 9am there was still 17 Little Gulls
and 150+ Bonaparte' s Gull in the marsh.
Other species seen were Caspian Terns, American Bittern, Black-crowned Night

Little Gulls numbers have been fluctuating between 10-20 birds for most of
the week. This morning there were 32 birds present. Up to 23 birds could be
observed at one time performing courtship display flights over the marsh.
Bonaparte's Gull numbers have been fluctuating

There were 43 birds present between the marsh and adjacent Lake Ontario.
There is also 1600 Bonaparte's Gulls present this morning.
Almost all Little Gulls and Bonaparte's left for the marsh by 9:30am

While doing a circuit around the Oshawa Second Marsh I found 3 Nelson's
Sharp-tailed Sparrows. Two of the birds were along the western side of the
marsh. One bird was just north of the east platform (GM Office platform) at
the north end of Wilkinson's Pond.

at the Bonniebrae point parking lot.

This morning there were 26 Little Gulls present. The Bonaparte's Flock was
approx 800 birds and was just offshore of Darlington P.P. at 8:30am.

With the second day of 20 Celsius days the local avifaunal make up has
changed.

Hooded Warbler
I had a singing Hooded Warbler at the north edge of Cool Hollow this
morning. Cool Hollow is the small woods south of the GM platform and beside
the se corner of the Second Marsh.
Either this is a new drake or the Eurasian Wigeon that disappeared from the
marsh early last week has returned. It was foraging in front of the GM
platform at 5pm
No sign of the Garganey
Highlights:
15 species of waterfowl including American Wigeon-2, Ruddy Duck-3,
Bufflehead, and

This afternoon at 5pm I had a Willet on the beach at Darlington Provincial
Park. It was flushed at 5:40 by people on the beach and flew towards the
Second Marsh.

First off We did NOT look for the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. We did not see
it on the way to our study site but it could easily still be present.
Dave Andrew and myself were doing the CWS Great Egret roost survey tonight.

Today I did my 6th annual informal Greater Snow Goose Survey in eastern
Ontario. It encompasses Ontario between Ottawa and St Lawrence rivers running
east from Cornwall.
There very few geese (1000 Canada Geese) in traditonal areas north of Green
Valley.

there is a Parking lot on the south side. This is Bonniebrae point.

For information about
Currently looking at 2 Greater White-fronted Geese and the similar long
staying( multiyear) exotic Swan Goose. Birds on berm feeding on grass on the
east side of the marina with 200+ canada geese.
Directions:
Exit 401 at exit 440 and follow mill street south to lake.
