Stus-List Dodger and Bimini New England

2020-08-16 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
Hi
Yea, yea, yea, I’m still here even though I’m no longer driving a C :).

Yea it’s a Catalina 36 MKII.

Anyway I just got a couple of local quotes to replace the Bimini, Dodger
and connecter on my non-C

Holy sticker shock Batman, two local shops quoted me $8K for just the
canvas, no metal work. What the $&@&:)(/!!

I’m
Looking for quality and I don’t mind paying but I don’t want to get porked
just because I try to shop local.

I’m thinking of using Island Canvas in NY to duplicate? Any thoughts or
other ideas?

I’d also consider a new main/stack pack and jib if I could get a reasonable
package deal.

Thanks!

Stus-List Refridgeration

2019-09-29 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
I have what appears to be an original circa 1999 Cold Machine. The
compressor runs and cycles off for very short periods. Sometimes the
temperature is perfect at 34-38 for days on end, then then other times it
will stay in the high 40's - low 50's. Shutting it off and letting it sit
for a few hours *seems to help *but this could be anecdotal.

Two questions before I call in a pro.

Has anyone have advice for self repair?
Is it worth calling in a pro with a unit this old, or should I just remove
and replace?

Thanks in advance,

Stus-List Re chart plotter night mode

2018-10-24 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
Most of you probably know this but for those who have not experienced night
mode, it can be confusing. The areas that are light/bright become dark and
vise versa. This could make navigation confusing if one is unaware of the
change or not accustomed to it.
In well marked channels one is looking for aids to navigation and “stayin
in the dotted lines“ (so to speak).
In areas of large shallows, with few or no no aids to nav, following lines
of demarcation with reversed colored/shaded areas could be dangerous until
one gets used to it.

...don’t ask how I know.

Stus-List ColRegs

2018-09-21 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
Both boats bear responsibility. My understanding of ColRegs and my
interpretation of the story leads me believe that the “racer” acted
irresponsibly by causing what appeared to be a possible collision. This
caused the “S” boat to change course to attempt to avoid colliding.
ColRegs clearly states that one must avoid collisions no matter who is
stand on...

Rule 2
(b) In construing and complying with these Rules due regard shall be had to
all dangers of navigation and collision and to any special circumstances,
including the limitations of the vessels involved, which may make a
departure from these Rules necessary to avoid immediate danger.

...and that is why insurance companies charge more if you admit to racing
when they ask you if you will. That type of behavior takes on a higher
risk for collision. And there is nothing wrong with that. However, those
who pretend that navigating like a racer among non-racing vessels is
acceptable are just asking for an accident.

Not true for the Yanmar filter on the engine. I always have to bleed at

sometime she won't start without a bleed, sometimes she starts and runs
fine and at times she runs rough but will smooth out after a few minutes.

Re: Stus-List Propeller

JMHO

The best all around prop for the 30MI with an A-4.

http://www.atomic4.com/propeller.html

If you are a hard core racer, this might not be the prop for you.
Otherwise, this will yield easier docking, more punch through a chop,
higher RPM (good for the engine in many ways), higher causing speed, all
while still providing reduced drag under sail.

Sorry if that sounds like a sales pitch but I was so impressed by that
little prop that I talk it up every chance I get.

Just be very careful about using it without a zinc. They tell you that if
you go zinc less there will be no barnacle growth on the prop. If you end
up in a 'hot' marina the prop will act as your zinc...they replaced my prop
but now they have more detailed warranty with regards to this.

Good Luck,

This boat is in my marina. I have not seen the interior, the hull and

of the showroom with upgraded non-skid.

I can't imagine it would cost any less than 15K to make any boat this age
look like this. The owner also happens to own a glass/Awlgrip shop.

Disclaimer: I have met the owner a few times very briefly as his shop is
in my area and I got an estimate from him a long time ago, I no nothing

Hi,

My previous C had spreader lights and I used them before the advent of
cheap, reliable, LED headlamps.

My current boat has a deck light under the steaming light and I don't use
it.

One nice feature of ether deck or spreader is that you can light up the
boat in an emergency.

If you do replace them, go LED.

May you can find some that will strobe for those nights when you need to
use the deck as a dance floor.

@Dave, yea almost, but not so much. I'd consider one if it came up in my

@Mike, I saw that Merlin on Yacht World. There is also a nice 34+ in
upstate NY.

My issue is that shipping and all that goes with it will probably add 10%
to the purchase price. I have to wait for something I can sail home :)

My Budget should be 50K but of course I can go a bit higher. If I have to
add more to that in trucking, loading, stepping, etc it's just too much.

I have considered the long motor down the Hudson but that would take up
some serious time and expense as well.

I think I'm gonna have to wait for something to come up between Virginia
and Maine. And also maybe get lucky and find someone before they get
involved with a broker and the price goes up another 10%.

One thing that strikes me is that you mentioned it's only one of batteries.
This leads me to believe that one of your batteries is either weaker than
the other or there is another issue that is only happening on one of your
banks wiring.

Are your battery terminals clean and snug?

I have owned two sailboats and had to replace the battery selector switch
on both. I believe both were original and gave up the ghost around the
quarter century mark.

The second one left me stranded and in need of a quick fix so I had to hire
a mechanic. My starter fried itself and the mechanic said it may have been
partially due to the low voltage coming from the faulty selector switch.

I had 30MKI hull no. 45

If your boom has not been raised, there may a pretty steep angle for a boom
vang. The previous owner of my boat raced it extensively and did well
without one.

I never seemed to need one but I did have the traveller moved to just aft
of the companionway and would sometimes rig a preventer to the toe rail on
a run and that would bring the boom down.

Re: Stus-List mast collar tangs C& C 33-2

2016-06-01 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
I'm no engineer. Just a guess.

The older models were not designed with vertical running rigging loads at
the center of the cabin roof. There were horizontal loads leading from
inside the mast to winches at the base of the mast

Later models had halyard, reefing, etc blocks attached to the cabin
top that lead aft to the cockpit. These loads are vertical.

In my untrained brain I always assumed that was the reason for the tangs on
my 30 MKII and the lack of tangs on my 30 MKI

But again, I'm no engineer

Stus-List Annapolis yard recommendations?

2016-05-11 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
I was hauled at Port Annapolis when I bought my boat.

I cannot comment on their workmanship as I did everything myself but launch
the boat. The staff was pleasant and the yard seemed busy and
professional. Lots of cruising boats on the hard with home ports from all
over.

They do have a decent chandlery and there are several other marine related
shops and craftsmen nearby, including a Yanmar dealer and a West Marine
just down the street.

The Yanmar shop was pretty big

Prices seemed a bit high, but I was used to a bare bones yard in CT, a far
cry from Annapolis.

Re: Stus-List Bottom paint help needed

2016-01-11 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
I used 1.5 - 2 gallons on my 30MKI
Depending on the year and how much of the old stuff I took off.

Two good coats and a third on the waterline and leading edges of the
keel/hull/ruddder would still be less than two gallons on Ultra.

That paint worked out great for me. I switched to petit because of a big,
deep discount and it works almost as good but I think the hull came out
just a tad cleaner with the ultra.

Dave,

It's calcium. At your age you need all the calcium you can get.

OK... mild acid, maybe even vinegar, should reduce the little discs to
goop. I would start with a $3 gallon of vinigar mixed with dish soap so it
sticks a bit, then go from there.

Then you can blend with ice, ensure, geritol and rum. Like a calcium
colada.

Sorry. I just can't help myself.

Stus-List Re; Boat names

2015-09-22 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
My first boat, C 30MKI was named Trysail. The previous owner sold Flying
Scotts (I think) at one time so it was a play on words. She still carries
that name.

My new boat, C 30 MKII, was named Lagniappe when I purchased her. Talk
about a mouth full and a triple repeat on the spelling when calling a
bridge, marina, or vessel. After the delivery trip North from Annapolis to
Mystic I changed the name. I got tired of repeating myself. Didn't like
the name myself, but anyone from New Orleans seemed to love it, reminded
them of home.

So I renamed my current boat HANUMAN. Seems simple enough and I'm still
amused that most folks can't pronounce it, nor spell it. HA NEW MAN.

Hanuman is a very prevalent character in the Ramayana and his picture is
probably hanging on the wall in every Indian restaurant in the world.
Millions of kids watch him in cartoons. He's carved into every early
Buddhist/Hindu temple across Asia. I just happen to be on the wrong side
of the world now and I guess I spent to much time in Asia.

Oddly enough, Hanuman is also the namesake of one of the J Class yachts.
The owner has spinnaker graphics similar to the tattoo on my leg. :)
Fortunately, I had the tattoo longer so I can say he stole my idea..lol
It's the Khmer version of Hanuman carved into the the temples of Cambodia,
Laos, Thailand and Burma/Myanmar.

Anyway, the Ramayana is one of those books everyone should read, or at
least try to, once in their life.

I hope I didn't put anyone to sleep with this tale

Whiskey tasting.

Ice delivered to my boat by the great staff at Cedar Island Marina.

Waking with a headache and ashtray mouth.

Meeting up with new friends and old. Notably the Friday night get together

Stus-List 88 CC 30 MKII Stiff

remove the through bolts from the plate that holds the cap to the rudder
post/emergency tiller point.

Remove the plastic bearing and lubricate.

Replace the bearing ant test for stiffness in the steering. If it's still
stif you may need to lightly sand the inside of the bearing, as I did, and
retest until you are happy with the results.

It's only a couple of hours work. You will need sealant for the cap and
through bolts.

But first you will need to trap a spider monkey and train him or her to
hold a wrench on those through bolts. I actually bribed a friend who is
small and flexible. After that miserable job he's no long we my friend.
Maybe I'd still have the monkey?

Re: Stus-List Emergency Tiller Bracket Squeaking

2015-06-16 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
I have an 88 30MKII

Long story short... I survey two 30MKII during my trek to find my boat.

The first had a very stiff steering issue, the brokers yard fixed it before
I had it surveyed. The would not tell me what was wrong or what they did
to fix it. In the end, the boat surveyed poorly and the owner would not
negotiate.

The second boat had the same issue, but the price was right and the boat
surveyed well. I purchased the boat and addressed the stiff steering issue
myself.

AFTER disassembling most of the steering and pedestal bits and lubricating
the heck out of the lower bearing all to no avail...

I removed the through bolts that hold the collar on emergency steering
thingamabob. This got me to the white plasiticish bearing doohicky.

I slid the bearing off, sanded it with fine emery cloth, gave it a bath in
lots of white synthetic grease safe for plastic bits and put it all back
together. Three seasons later both the steering and myself are still
smooth as silk.

 Hi all,

I would prefer a forum. That being said, for the amount of original

 we get now is repetitive.

Sailnet has a CC section. Sailboatowners.com used to have a CC
sight/section. I'm pretty sure Stew had a forum on the Photoalbum.com

I wonder if someone like Sailnet (or some other commercial site) would
give us a password protected area to post our own questions. It would
still drive us to their site and might not cost anything.

Then again, attaching a forum to the photoalbum would drive more traffic
 there.

We don't really need much. Often forums get diluted with multiple
sections that may not get posts for weeks. Also, there is the inevitable
politics and religion that we seem to be free of in our email community.

Stus-List Fuel tank access port

2015-01-23 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
Hello All,

I have an '89 30 MKII. It has what I believe to be the original fuel tank.
The tank has two access ports. They look like they may have been added, but
could be original, not sure.

Both ports are held closed with machine screws. The aft port does not leak
and I have yet to remove it.

The forward access port weeps fuel. I removed the cover and found that it
appears to have been sealed with a black substance I'm guessing is permatex.

I'm going to empty the tank and try to clean it without opening the aft
port (as it does not leak).

The fuel looks OK and I don't see anything real nasty but there is some
black gunk at the bottom. So I'm gonna change it all and clean the tank by
hand.

Question is: how and what should I use to re-seal the access port?

Any hints would be greatly appreciated

Re: Stus-List The stern squats at high speed

2015-01-14 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this...

The stern of a displacement hull vessel will begin to submerge as you
approach hull speed. It's settling into the trough of its own wake(s).

Even kayaks do it.

Someone told me a long time ago that a displacement vessel could
theoretically sink itself if it had enough power.

YMMV

All,

Does anyone have any pictures from Newport, (or of the trip to/from) they
would like to contribute? Anything would be greatly appreciated. They will
be forwarded to Good Old Boat, Windcheck, Mohegans Sun, etc. in hopes that
we get more stuff and exposure for next year.

Also, I will be putting together an online photo album so we have them all
in the same place.

And don't forget to send out those thank you! emails.

Stus-List CC 37/40 + Pricing

2014-09-27 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
For the mast to be removed, the boat went into the water. That seems like
an expensive proposition for a boat that size.

I'm going to guess that the boat was recently launched and the rig taken
down for a survey under a purchase agreement. If the deal fell through the
broker/owner would not bother spending the money to step the mast and rig
the boat.

If I'm correct, you might find out who owns that survey and purchase it
before going any further.

There is also the possibility that the survey was halted (some surveyors
will let you pay X amount and just pack it in if there are major defects
found early in the process) and no formal survey written. If so, you might
be able to buy that information from the surveyor himself.

Anyway, if it were me and I was local, I would start sniffing around and
find out why a boat that big was suddenly launched, de-rigged, and then
hauled again.

Good luck,

Stus-List 2014 Northeast Rendezvous

2014-09-23 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
Fellow CC'ers.

Amazing, we pulled off three in a row! Mystic, Block Island, Newport, all
fantastic locations and next year we head west into central Long Island
Sound.

For those of you New Englanders who didn't make it, I encourage you to get
there next year. Bring your boat, it's worth the trip. I think for all of
us who sail in, it is becoming one of the high lights of the season and a
final cruise as we wind down into fall sailing.

Charley, you did a great job keeping us fed and watered, although most
never did touch the bottled water. We had more than enough grub and grog
to keep everyone happy for two evenings! For the weekend of Sept. 19,
you were the hardest working man in show biz.

Andrew, sorry we missed you and thanks for all your hard work getting the
ball rolling.

Dave, got things organized on the dock, handled the behind the scenes
aggravation and proved. yet again, to be an excellent dancer (this time we
have us on video and you probably don't even remember).

CC Yachts/US Watercraft really came through for us, I mean what could be
better than getting two brand new CC Yachts, a fascinating guest speaker,
and picking up our tab for the dockside food and drink? I'm so impressed
I'm almost starting to like the new logo!

Special thanks to the CC Crew that brought the boats over and took people
out sailing.

Mohegan Sun, thanks for the tchotchkes.

Good Old Boat Magazine, thanks for the latest issues.

Sailing Magazine, thanks for stopping by, we look forward to the photos.

Thanks to Stu for keeping up the website and email list.

For everyone who made it by land or sea, without YOU there would be no

Stus-List CC Rendezvous 2015

I think it's great we are already looking to 2015!

I've been in and out of Milford many times and don't recall anything close
to 5 ft in the channel. I only draw 5 so I'm not bothered unless it goes
below 7.

Active captain review says 8 ft at low tide on Milford Landing approach,
some slips are 5 ft and to check with management.

If Clinton or Milford don't work I would also suggest Greenport NY -
Mitchell Park Marina - Great spot with loads of bars, restaurants,
shopping, etc. Cheap slips off season (floating, concrete, inside a
breakwater)!

Re: Stus-List follow-up on outboards

2014-08-05 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
Here is my two cents.

Engine issues will not simply go away by purchasing an outboard. Outboards
break down, it's a fact of life.

On of the reasons I justified selling my 30MMKI with an A-4 was that the
engine was the original, 1972, raw water cooled, soon to die, at the end of
the line, it must be, it's old, it's only a matter of time Well, I
made fast friends with the new owner, they kept the boat in the same yard
and that engine is still running strong.

Buying a fancy shmancy boat with a Yanmar (and a monthly payment to the
bank) simply gave me more things to learn about. Yes, the Yanmar is
reliable. Yes the Yanmar has needed some repairs and maintenance.

Burt Stratton has given you some great advice. Most of the things he has
mentioned can be done with basic tools and a bit of hand-eye coordination.

The coil problem you mentioned leads me to ask one question; Did you buy
the coil Moyer recommends? I had coil problems. First I bought a cheap
coil from NAPA, then i bought a better coil from NAPA. I eventually
purchased the exact coil from Moyer and that was the final coil I purchased.

If you are keeping the boat and the engine does not have good compression
or you have other reason to believe it's DOA, then, my advice is to
seriously consider the Moyer Option.

Read the Moyer forums and learn as much about the engine as you can so you
can service it yourself and learn to fix it yourself in a pinch.

OR, buy an outboard and join some outboard forums so you can service and
fix that outboard yourself while stranded out at sea with no wind.

You have options;
1. Hang off the stern cursing with bleeding knuckles while dropping tools
into the water.
2. Curse with bleeding knuckles down below in the shade practicing to be a
carnival contortionist.

Re: Stus-List dual ownership?

2014-07-14 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
On the subject of partnerships; Does anyone have any experience with some
sort of limited partnership.

Here is my situation:
30 MKII, in very nice but not perfect shape.
Well equipped for weekends and short cruises. Basic electronics and older
sails.
I don't race, the sails are decent but to race competitively would require
$eriou$ upgrades.
I work almost every weekend and holiday.
I'm limited in my summer vacation time.
I have my own mooring so I simply pay for dinghy storage/access at a marina
in the summer.
Winter haul out/storage is very reasonable and I do ALL my own maintanence
and repairs.
The boat is financed/insured.

I'm on my boat every tues/wed/thurs and end up using it about three or four
weekends a year. One for my spring cruise and one for my fall cruise.

I have often considered a partner or putting the boat out for charter to
help cover costs as I'm never on it during the weekend.

As the boat is financed, it would seem wise to keep it in my name and find
someone who would contribute marina fees and use the boat darn near any
weekend they choose. Maybe just keep it on a year to year basis, sort of
like a lease?

$2K per year would most of the marina/storage fees and I don't plan on any
major upgrades.

Or would that create more problems than it would solve?

You bring up an excellent point about CO detectors. (not CO2). Any fired
device (stove, engine, generator, etc.) is capable of quickly generating
dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in a confined space such as the cabin

am not aware of any code requirements but there are battery operated
combination photo-electric / CO detectors on the market at very reasonable
cost. I highly recommend them. I had two in my 1954 38 foot wheeler. We ran
the generator frequently for long periods of time while on board.

2014-07-09 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
OK, while we are on the subject of silly things. The Previous owner of my
boat had a fire extinguisher located in the propane locker.

I thought it was kinda silly at first, I mean, who's gonna wanna reach in
there if somethings ablaze?

Then I thought about it some more and I figured if it got hot enough the
pressure relief valve would just cause it to discharge all by itself, maybe
aiding fire suppression any thoughts?

For the record, I have more than enough fire extinguishers located all over
the boat. I believe in having at least one in each cabin/room of the boat *in
addition* to the bare minimum that the CG requires.

Stus-List CC 30 mk1 rudder design

2014-06-13 Thread Robert Gallagher via CnC-List
I owned hull #44 for 12 years and sailed it extensively, never raced. I
now own a 30 MKII

I sailed in Fisher's Island Sound/LIS/BIS. Wind can be blowing stink on
one end of Fisher's and becalmed on the other. Some call LIS The Dead
Sea in August but it can be rocking at the mouths of the rivers or out at
the race. Dead air at noon, windy by 3PM, dying again by 5PM, glass at
sunset. By the time you reef or put up a bigger head sail it's time to do
the opposite. It can take longer to rig the spinnaker than you will get to
fly it.

Here is my take on the 30 MKI. It's a bear, seems to love plowing through
the water with the rail buried deep. It points very high, sails fast and
easy for its vintage. It's such a fun boat to sail.

There is a lot of weather helm if you have too much sail up. The problem
is, it's so stiff and will continue to plow through the water near hull
spead that it's easier to fight the helm than reef, especially short handed
or cruising.

In 12 years I reefed my main once, just for practice. Never bothered
again, reefed the 135% on the furler or sailed on the jib alone.

If the rudder stalls or the boat rounds up you have way, WAY too much sail
up and it's probably blowing 35.

My 30MKII will misbehave so much earlier, I reef regularly and fly a
smaller headsail. However, the boat moves along nicely in light air
whereas the 30MKI is not so much of a light air boat without a huge
headsail...like 175%, then it moves right along.

Most of these boats came set up for racing with lots of winches and cleats.

The 30MKI with single or double line reefing, all lines led aft, a clean
foredeck, self tailing winches, stack pack, and a redesigned cabin could be
the ultimate daysailer/overnighter. If I hit the powerball, that is what
would be sitting at my dock waiting for me to go out for the
afternoon...one of these days I'll buy a ticket.
