Friday May 22 brought 8 Common Grackles 2 on the caged Sunflower feeder
one on each side stretching their necks to reach the lower openings and with
luck a seed with their beaks, the other 6 in the backyard grass

birds to my annual list . House Wren, Lincoln Sparrow, Virginia Warbler.
Brown-headed Cowbird ( male and female). Lazuli Bunting.
Was good to get out and see a few of the migrating species.

Hi Cobirders, A large group of Tuesday birders found a lot of birds on a nice
day around Walden ponds. I stayed with my rolator around Cottonwood Marsh
which had a great assortment of birds. I saw 18 species including White
Pelicans 17, Spotted Sandpiper 1, Killdeer 3, White-faced Ibis,

the lake and east side viewing area. The island was very active with over 20
Double-crested Cormorants most on nests in the big tree. Altogether I saw 16
species. New for me for the year were 5 Great Blue Herons,

Hi Cobirders, My son Bob took me up to Boulder Walden Ponds-Cottonwood Marsh
had a lot of waterfowl including Ring-necked Ducks, Widgeon ,
Redhead, Green-winged Teal,Mallard, Gadwall and two Northern Pintail. Best of
all a Cinnamon Teal (fos). Several groups of Canada Geese and

Hi On Sunday afternoon my son Bob took me to see it. It was still there! I
watched it for over half hour and shared my telescope with the several there
who were careful to not disturb it. I watched move a short distance with my
binoculars also. Finally I am able to add to my list of

feeeder in the Olive tree. There were two American Goldfinches and a
new bird. About same size. It had round dark gray on top of its head , a
mostly yellow stubby bill, no black under the bill. The back was pretty

birds were coming to my feeders Christmas morning so off and on I
checked for 3 hours between 7:30 and 10:30 AM . At least 11 species were seen.

especially during the cold spell. Not doing the large cable drum feeder yet.
Most every day: 7:30 to 6:30AM Bushtits come small flocks before regulars show

Hi cobirders. Bluejays and Scrub Jaya have been coming for weeks. One day 5
Bluejays came for peanuts. 2 adults and 3 young ones now full grown with
bright plumage.
On another day 2 Scrub Jays came. First time I saw 2 at same time. They put
put on quite show for peanuts.

Hi all. I put out some peanuts yesterday and the Scrub Jay came and got one.
I think this is the same one that has been coming for 2 years now. I think it
hangs out with Blue Jays.
It is not as bright as most Scrub Jays and may be a female.

Hi Cobirders. Last Friday while putting out seed for the birds a large Crow
came with squalls on the top of the utility pole. So what was different.
It had a large white patch on its wing. The new edition of Sibley's large
Guide came Sunday as a birthday present so checked Crows and sure

This morning about 7AM before sunrise there were a dozen Bushtits in the
Chokecherry and 2 of them in the Sunflower feeder round cage.
They were all fluffed up in the 18 o f cold with tiny beaks and long narrow
tails twittering. Plumage details not showing mostly back lighted.
Last week
Hi cobirders, The immature Palm Warbler made an appearance in the Chokecherry
tree and briefly into the millet seed feeder by the
window. It now had some dull streaking over the pale yellow on the breast.
When it left the feeder it stayed in the chokecherry and moved
its tail up and down a

son Bob heard a Great Horned Owl as we came into the
driveway. When I got out of the car I also heard it give a hoot
then another both soft and at the back of the lot to the south. What is

National Park Friday. We arrive there 11 AM. Went to the west end
picnic area west of the huge rock fall
of the Lawn Lake flood. This area had several sapsuckers of both
species flying around. They found a nest hole in an

Sandwich Tern found at 10:45AM in middle of Lake on stubby tree

Last Saturday my son Bob took my car and me from 10AM to 2:30PM
here, Great for handicapped birders . The Wildlife Drive Auto Tour
is especially good for
viewing birds. There is a wide shoulder (dirt) to pull off on to
view birds from the car . Most of the road is tree lined too.

Hi Cobirders. About 4PM Tuesday a Western Scrub Jay and a male
Brewers Blackbird flew in together to the Chokecherry tree by the
kitchen window.
The Scrub Jay found something to eat on the Chokecherry while the
Brewers Blackbird went to check the seeds at the drum feeder.

Hi Cobirders, My helper Tina and I went to Tabor Lake about 4PM
Monday and the Common Loon was still there. First for the year for me
and a Life bird for Tina.
I think it may stay after todays storm.

into the front yard and then up into the young Locust tree in front
of the window. What is that?
It was about 6 Pale colored . with gray face and gray about the
head. Top of head was much darker. Bill was gray also. The

Loon from the old Heron overlook in the west part of Chatfield
reservoir .
Then from the east section of the Marina I saw the Pacific Loon. A

The Red-throated Loon has been reported down at Pueblo but we did

Olive now mostly leafless. It sat there for a while no birds near it
but quite a few ignoring it
further away. Soon it gave up and flew to the next yard south.

Redpolls on the nature trail west of the foot bridge from 11AM to
2PM. Prospect Pond had very few
waterbirds.. I saw a Belted Kingfisher, Blue Jay. 2 White-breasted
Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker and a Black-billed Magpie near Bass
Hi cobirders. This morning the female Ruby-crowned Kinglet
checked out the Chokecherry tree at my kitchen window for a short
time. It came before
about a week ago.
I have a small Dark-eyed Junco coming regularly near here too.

A birder /driver and I in my car a Suberu Forester plan to go

of over 50 Brewer's Blackbirds (all males) flew low over the house and

Lesser Goldfinches hogging the feeder which was only half full. When
a Pine
Warbler tried to get into it from the top and flitted around trying

across the back of my 100 ft lot. Stretched between two utility

a towhee between the picnic table and the Chokecherry . As it moved

around back was on a high ledge. An adult Red-tailed Hawk flew about

67o, wind steady from the west 10 to 15MPH . No land birds
seen, all hiding too late , too warm, too windy. I did see the the
male Mandarin Duck up on shore with other waterfowl resting out of
the wind. It woke up and

of the zoo. The Long-tailed Duck was long gone.
I counted 64 Double-crested Cormorants most of them in nests in
pairs. They have been back at least a week. A few were
on the log in the pond and flying around. There were
Hi cobirders. Seems if a bird comes to my yard for 10 minutes I
should be able to Id. it. But I couldn't so hope it comes again.
It was down in the Chokecherry by the kitchen. It was all fluffed
up and larger than the small birds. It took two bites of snow
and moved up in better light.

thought of first because I got 1 or 2 several times since
Oct. 30 and last seen on Dec. 22. These were the first here in over

emphasize that many birders that get out often and
go to several places will see some uncommon birds. I try to get out
as often as my handicaps allow now. Out of nearly 200

came about 11:30AM to take me birding which they
also have come to enjoy. Since the Snowy Owl not found earlier in
Aurora I decide we go to Chatfield to look for the two
Brant Geese . Not many land birds about but a lot of
Hi cobirders. The Coopers Hawk I reported a few days ago had
several white spots on its back and was smaller than it
looked at close range and its tip of the tail only had a small amount
of white.
At 9AM a Coopers hawk did come and swooped around the house sparrow
bushes and and stayed

seed feeder yesterday and today. it stays on it for a while
and looks real healthy.
This morning from the kitchen window I looked down on the ground
under the Chokecherry tree . There was a Coopers Hawk

Warbler showed up at the Thistle feeder. It fed for
about 5 minutes before flying away. It was a first year male . I
found my copy of Warblers book by Jon Dunn . Jon described
the autumn male and notes it wanders west.

Checked old Heron observation lot no cars then.
Went to Model air plane field. One birder was parked there observing
2 male winter Lapland Longspurs on ground at the dumpster.

Day after the October 26 snow. I got the first ever Pinyon Jays (2)
seen here in over 50 years. They stopped in the chokecherry
by the kitchen window and flew to the Russian Olive and gone.
On October 30 the first Western Scrub Jay in many years and it has
returned many days

goes by handicapped fishing place north of the
south Marina. Here were many birders I had not seen for quite a
while. Guess the first winter Pomarine Jaeger
brought many to see a rare bird. It had moved across to near the

Also there appeared a House Finch with white on top of head and more

corrected I went by Mt. Olivet Cemetery . The long
narrow pond has a steep bank to the right and it was solid with
Cackling Geese and east of the big pond were two
big plots with many more Cackling Gees feeding.. When I came

time these two years all year. Over summer there
was a steady bunch of Lesser Goldfinches some Black-backed and some
Green-backed male L. Goldfinches.

Hi Cobirders. I started using my bird feeders Sun.
Monday October 24th Merlin stopped in the Chokecherry tree briefly
no birds so it flew to the Russian Olive
and I lost it. Probably
same one that I saw a week earlier flying into my subdivision.
Hi cobirders. Monday at 6PM a flock of 30 or 40 Common Grackles came
in from the north and landed in the
front yard some in the small tree and most on the lawns. Calm
scattered white clouds. In another 5 minutes they
were gone south. Migration is happening.
